Re a debate: From Asbury Pulp ASBURY PARK, NJ – APTV, officially known as the Asbury Park Cable Advisory Committee, announced today that they will be producing a forum for the Asbury Park City Council candidates on Tuesday, April 30th. This event will be hosted by VFW Post 1333 at 701 Lake Ave in Asbury Park, and moderated by the League of Women Voters, Ocean Township section. The forum will begin at 7:00 p.m.. APTV will videotape the debate to be viewed and/or streamed on the committee’s website, AsburyParkTV.org. (Editor’s note: The website launches next week.) The race for council in this year’s Asbury Park municipal election is already proving itself to be a spirited contest. All five seats are in play and four slates of candidates are running together as tickets. In all, 23 candidates filed to run, though not all candidates have been certified by the City Clerk. APTV is a newly appointed committee in Asbury Park that is in the process of establishing its cable position on Cablevision and Verizon Fios. John Kaplow, Chairman of APTV has stated, “At the very heart of what APTV stands for, and intends to accomplish in the future, is facilitating the communication flow between citizens, elected officials, and stakeholders of our City.” This debate is the perfect introduction to APTV and just one type of programming this committee will start bringing to the city of Asbury Park. More details to follow… - ABOUT APTV: The Mission of the Asbury Park Cable Advisory Committee is to provide an outlet for Asbury Park’s Public, Government, Civic, Educational and Non-profit organizations to create and present programs that will be broadcast on the Public Access channels provided by each of the city’s Cable TV providers. http://asburypulp.com/2013/03/asbury-council-race-great-debate-is-on/ In a message dated 4/3/2013 9:56:41 A.M. Jack's and Oak's comments have been most reasonable. The guv who has made a name for himself by scapegoating government employees is at Disney World. The lieutenant governor who is supposed to be in charge when he is absent is in Mexico. If you aren't happy, run for city office and try and make a difference. I think about it all the time. Maybe it's an eye opening experience about the reality of our city. Maybe not. But honestly, the amount of bitching about this snowstorm is ridiculous. It will be past history in a few days. Not life changing for a vast majority of us. If anything, it should be life changing in the way that it should teach each and every one of us to be prepared. If you have plenty of food and water, then unless it's life or death you should stay home, not drive, and let the streets be cleaned ASAP. But no, people don't prepare, they try and drive, get stuck, and block progress. Right now, there's a taxi stuck on Main St. in AP, right in the middle of the street, for at least the past 12 hours. Who's fault is that? Sometimes, people just need to be patient and stay home. Yes, your job might not be happy with that, but realistically speaking, what's more important, your job, your safety, or being part of a bigger picture where people think about we instead of me? I speak from experience in a district which for decades has been rated among the top in the county based on standardized test scores. The district has high rates of college admissions, low absenteeism, lots of involvement by parents who respect education, and close supervision of teachers by their supervisors. And in that almost ideal environment, scores of novice teachers couldn't measure up to the tasks in their job descriptions. Fortunately for the students, the district was able to dismiss them after reasonable interventions didn't work. A competitive salary scale always guaranteed an ample pool of applicants, highly qualified on paper, from which to choose replacements. Among those who couldn't cut it were many coming from the private sector via various well-meaning fast-track credentialing programs. I don't know the answer for troubled school systems. I followed Michelle Rhee closely as she tried to reform the D.C. system. She recently resigned, apparently because her job security was threatened after the mayoral election there. PBS's NewsHour devoted considerable coverage to both Rhee and to those who tried to rebuild and reform New Orleans' system after Katrina. Three of those NewsHour reports can be found under External Links at the Wiki entry for Rhee: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Rhee . The titles for the reports prior to her resignation are revealing: Part 1: D.C. Schools Chief Rhee Faces High Expectations for System Reform; Part 2: In Battle to Revamp D.C. Schools, Education Leader Faces Resistance; Part 3: In Washington, D.C., Schools Chief Faces Tough Choices. Very complex issues. And it doesn't help to have a governor in NJ whose only tactics seem to involve scapegoating teachers and unions. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Baronet's Gone! Let's look forward.
The Baronet is gone, gone, gone. Gone with the wind like the Mayfair, St James, and the Savoy. Why not summon all the anger and frustration into big time energy into joining ReVision as a member monthly Donating at their web site - big time support with the goal of helping them find a permanent home -- performance space/theater in Asbury Park? Either a new structure or something beautifully refurbished (not some old piece of crap no one else wants). Must be some professional grant writers out these who know how to start that ball rolling. Arts funding, stimulus monies? Anybody in city with that kind of know how? AP has come so far now that it is on the radar screen nationwide from what I can tell via various web and PR alerts. Must be some benefactors out there who are tuned in to the positive things that have been happening -- but also clever enough to detect the potential for what's still missing. [AsburyPark] Fwd: Re Madison Marquette's iPhone app for Asbury Park
Still, some retail property owners feel that mobile apps are worth the investment and have pursued their development. Just before Memorial Day weekend, Madison Marquette, a Washington, D.C.-based firm with a 10.5-million-square-foot portfolio, rolled out an _iPhone app_ (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/asbury-park/id373462780?mt=8) for Asbury Park, its 400,000-square-foot lifestyle center in Asbury Park, N.J. The app gives shoppers updates on cultural events happening at the property in addition to informing them of retail sales and providing links to Asbury Park’s _Facebook_ (http://www.facebook.com/TheAsburyParkBoardwalk) and _Twitter_ (http://twitter.com/apboardwalk) pages. Madison Marquette chose Asbury Park for the roll-out because it has a large entertainment component and customers benefit from getting event updates for the center, in addition to using the app to scan for retail discounts. _http://bit.ly/bBAOOA_ (http://bit.ly/bBAOOA) _Mall Owners Work Hard To Keep Pace With Latest Marketing Techniques_ (http://retailtrafficmag.com/management/marketing/owners_keep_pace_marketing_0907 2010/) _http://retailtrafficmag.com/management/marketing/owners_keep_pace_marketing _09072010/_ (http://retailtrafficmag.com/management/marketing/owners_keep_pace_marketing_09072010/) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [AsburyPark] AP Power Plant as Site for Contemp Art? Is Gary Mottola Always this Difficult?
I missed this from Aug 17. Maybe others had too. Hoping Gary Mottola is not always as difficult and as quick to take umbrage as he appears in this write up: Robin Parness Lipson Works for New Jersey Art Museum - NYTimes.com http://nyti.ms/9xrqRL http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/18/arts/design/18dream.html?_r=1 Excerpts: August 17, 2010 A Dream of a Contemporary Art Museum on the Jersey Shore ASBURY PARK, N.J. …. What she sees are the bustling new restaurants and gift shops and the energy of a bright future being shaped. And as part of that future, she sees her baby, her dream, the New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art: a glittering monument to the idea that New Jersey is not just the home of Snooki and the Situation, or feuding housewives, or the Bada Bing Club, but a place where cultured, philanthropic people can build something that makes a difference. Ms. Lipson has not yet raised any of the $5 million it is projected that she will need to open the museum, nor does she have a lock on the boardwalk real estate she covets, or a team of slick consultants armed with surveys and statistics. But she is a bona fide expert at using charm, guileless candor, boundless energy and terms of endearment to bring home what she wants: a new museum on the Jersey Shore devoted to emerging artists. … … But she does have the support of wealthy friends with a major art collection: Michael and Susan Hort. The Horts, who appear annually on ARTnews’s list of the world’s 200 top collectors, host a popular art party, a brunch at their TriBeCa loft, during the annual Armory Show. Ms. Lipson also has a dozen young artists, curators, event planners and others who are part of her dream. These volunteers have done everything from build a Web site, njmoca.org, to plan an inaugural exhibition and gala on Oct. 23. … The building of her dreams is a 1920s power plant, designed by Warren Wetmore, whose work includes Grand Central Terminal. Abandoned for 30 years, the plant is owned by the development company Madison Marquette, which owns much of the property on the boardwalk here. Ms. Lipson tried to get a meeting with Madison Marquette’s president, Gary Mottola, for weeks to make her pitch. She finally got it on a recent morning in a sunbaked conference room. Ms. Lipson was in a black skirt and sleeveless top and big sunglasses, Mr. Mottola in a Stone PonyT-shirt; a reporter attended. Ms. Lipson noted that while New Jersey had many regional museums, it had nothing that drew international tourism. “Except Madam Marie,” Mr. Mottola interjected, referring to the stand of a former boardwalk fortuneteller made famous by Bruce Springsteen in his “ 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy).” Ms. Lipson said the museum would be an economic catalyst in the way that Mass MoCA, a contemporary art museum that opened in 1999, has been in North Adams, Mass. “It was blighted; there was a high crime rate,” she said. Mr. Mottola appeared to take umbrage. Asbury Park, he said, was “the biggest music destination in the world.” The D.J. Tiësto had recently played at the Convention Center. And celebrity glamour? What about the New Jersey Hall of Fame, which has Jack Nicholson’s second-grade report card and Susan Sarandon’s cheerleading jacket in its temporary space on the boardwalk? He might be interested in having an art museum, he said, but “not in the context of ‘We’re blighted, this is going to make us unblighted,’ ” he said. “We’re already way past that.” Reflecting later, Ms. Lipson said it had been a learning experience. “I didn’t mean to denigrate what he’s done with the music; that was my mistake,” she said. But she didn’t feel defeated. She was able to interest Mr. Mottola in hosting the inaugural gala in another one of the company’s buildings, the Paramount Theater, and she saw that as progress. … See also the web site, njmoca.org for the proposed NJ MUseum of Contemporary Art. [AsburyPark] Scorsese's Boardwalk Empire
Our first stop was Atlantic City, which makes sense, but, realistically, there were maybe five or six camera angles that would work for the 1920s, says Winter. Anywhere you turn now, there are dozens of things -- casinos, hotels, etc. -- that can't be there. BK 'EMPIRE': Scorsese's HBO series was filmed in Greenpoint instead of Atlantic City because of modern buildup. Steve Buscemi stars. Then we looked in Asbury Park, which has a great defunct boardwalk, and the city [of Asbury Park] was interested in having us there, but New Jersey doesn't really offer a tax credit and . . . it just became more convenient and feasible to build a boardwalk set on the water in Greenpoint. And Brooklyn offers all the 'period' neighborhoods= Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/tv/empire_state_ssHsHdQ9Y48XTKYYrdS0vL#ixzz0wmgeceSV In new Martin Scorsese show 'Boardwalk Empire,' Brooklyn plays part of Atlantic City - NYPOST.comhttp://bit.ly/bcig5v http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/tv/empire_state_ssHsHdQ9Y48XTKYYrdS0vL [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [AsburyPark] A City That Knows Long Odds
Quick glance, I saw a beach, a boardwalk, and the words A City That Knows Long Odds, and I thought Asbury Park featured again. Turns out its Atlantic City with a picture with the surprising caption: TOUGH TIMES In Atlantic City the Boardwalk is far from jammed these days. About 12,000 casino workers have lost their jobs in recent years. So I'm happy to concur with Asbury Couple's remarks below: For Atlantic City, the Odds Have Been Long for Decades - NYTimes.com http://nyti.ms/dBSaar http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/15/nyregion/15atlantic.html?scp=1sq=atlantic %20cityst=cse In a message dated 8/15/2010 12:45:41 P.M. Is it perfect - no, but it never will be. It never will be anywhere... And while it's always important to point on when things could be better, let's have some realism. In the worst economy in a generation things here continue to move forward - albeit at a little slower pace. So complain about parking - things can and should get better. But how about a bit of perspective. At least the city's making revenue (like every other shore town) for parking as they should. Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Observations this weekend...- Road Trip BS
A good discussion and I agree lots of valid points -- still not sure where I come down on this -- need some time to get over the joy of seeing people -- lots of people here. Looking for possible parallels: I used to enjoy taking a day off to attend the lighting of the xmas tree at Rockefeller Center -- back when it was broadcast locally at 4 PM. Easy to get there, park, and get up front viewing. Then it went Mad Men Mega-event, national TV, and almost impossible to access without three days planning and/or costly tickets for upfront viewing. Impossible to get to any retailers or restaurants in the area for hours, can't cross streets, herded like cattle by police -- use subway entrances exits simply to cross the streets. No longer enjoyable for me -- but I am assuming a big hit $$$ wise for the city and merchants, and media focus on NYC musbe great PR. Same with the inconveniences that became overwhelming for the Village Halloween Parade -- The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade normal access to public spaces not so normal during those events for people who don't want to watch a parade. Street food fairs and Street book fairs Street flea markets, block parties Maybe fortunate unfortunate access ? In a message dated 7/20/2010 2:05:05 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, mark07...@yahoo.com writes: All valid points about CH, but we can't stop there. I guess someone needs to bring this all up at the next city council meeting. I guess when we can kiss the Asbury Film Festival event at CH goodbye as well since it's closed off for their welcoming event. Let's kick out revision theatre from the carousel building as well. They have the nerve to charge for tickets to see Tommy in a public space! Since we can't please all, I think they should just ban all events on public space in Asbury starting with Roadtrip. The organizers should move it to Belmar or long branch. Who needs 1,000s of people spending money in town and taking up valuable beach space, hotel rooms and filling up restaurants? Let some other towns share the wealth. Asbury doesn't need it and I'm sure places like Long Branch would welcome all the revenue. I'm sure the people going to Biggies Clam shack will more than make up for all the hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue from the weekend. I almost forgot to mention ending gay pride in asbury park. They charged for that too and closed public streets for a parade. Bye Bye Pride. Since we can't pick and choose, we must end all events on public space. No more BBQ festival in the park either. Get rid of the flea markets at sunset park as well. Bye Bye farmers market. I should be able to play kickball in that space at that exact time since my taxe s go to mowing that lawn. Bye bye Oysterfest, it was fun while it lasted. No more Jazz festival either. Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Reality vs Rose Colored Glasses
I thought it was odd of me to somehow agree with all of you (non-anonymous) contributors to this thread. All different points of view, but living here and with a passion for Asbury Park. But then got another promo email for Nicle Atkins' CD, Neptune City. And it reminded me of all you've been saying: The shores of New Jersey are littered with small towns whose better days are far in the past. They’re towns that have been written about, and sung over; towns that have been mythologized and idealized; and they are the towns that 28-year-old musician Nicole Atkins–a native of Neptune City, located a stones throw from fabled Asbury Park was born and raised. They can be places steeped in their own history, buried under the sense of their own pasts. Places of hey-days and what-once-was. [N.B.especially]And it’s that sense of something lost and of what perhaps should have been, and what might be, that permeates Atkins’s debut, Neptune City. The characters in her tunes seem to live in an idealized past. “This record is the history of my town; it’s the history of my family and friend in this town,” she explains. “From the time I was a kid I started collecting these sad little tragically beautiful personal stories from the people in my life, and my own as well. That sense of history really appeals to me as an artist.” Even the track titles resonate: The Way it is, War Torn, Cool Enough, Love Surreal; except for the last one, Party's Over. And from Customer reviews at Amazon: Maybe Tonight encapsulates the restless hope that permeates the entire record. By the time the chorus hits, you are forced into the corner that demands you be either crushed by the broken promises or lifted up despite them. And: And sure enough, after trying on other cities and countries for size, she's ended up right back in Asbury Park, just next door to the place which, as she said in Neptune City, she wasn't sure if she could go home to again. === Criticism coming from a tough love for Asbury Park is good. And so is an insistence to Celebrate Asbury Park now and the various passions of those who live here. For the next few days I'll be distracted celebrating the Inauguration. [AsburyPark] Asbury Park looks to have its own new hit with Exit 102
Filming for the final full version will take place this spring in the Asbury Park Area. Excerpted from _http://tinyurl.com/794zoa_ (http://tinyurl.com/794zoa) Exit 102 is a gritty gem of a film that takes the viewer back to the golden years when loyalty and honor was the code and meant way more than carrying a glock and wearing your baggy pants down off your ass. It showcases a better time for many and is centered on the vibe of a close knit community on the brink of life changing turmoil. The premiere took place in November at the Paramount Theater and was an outstanding success. Peter and Ran told the packed house that they had received full funding (14 million dollars) and are ready to go full bore. Madison Marquette’s Meagan Olivera told me that attendance numbers were around 1,000. It was great to see that the whole town turned out to support and cheer so wildly as the screen lit up. To me it represented a triumphant sounding for a town that’s weathered everything and survived. I’d like to think of the representation of the film as Leonardo made its mark with Clerks, and now Asbury Park looks to have its own new hit with Exit 102. Re: [AsburyPark] New Year's Resolutions
I don't agree with the suggestion that participating in a community-oriented message board and performing good works are mutually exclusive activities. I do agree with Glenn's suggestion that posting a list of all of the children's interests here would be a good idea. I do know that specific requests for help posted to these boards generally get a good response. And, to cop a phrase from post # 44070, you could have simply posted a request for volunteers without taking a stab at those who post more frequently here, without being judgmental about how they spend their time, and without making assumptions about what they do or don't do during their spare time. In a message dated 1/11/2009 5:06:14 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, martin_ke...@yahoo.com writes: Did you resolve to spend less time on this message board this year? Here are some examples I have one little girl that would learn how to play the keyboard. Any musicians out there that could spare some time? She received a small keyboard for her birthday. A 7th grade boy I know would really like to attend the Marine Science Academy in Sandy Hook when he enters high school. I am looking for someone who could just tutor him in general now and/or maybe help prepare him for the entrance exam next year. There are, of course, many other cases. I know volunteering can sometimes be an intimidating commitment to get involved with. These kids already attend Holy Spirit's after-school program so the venue is there and we can work out a schedule that completely suits you. Hope to hear from some of you. [AsburyPark] Brookdale and BRAC
Colleges' Role in Military's Restructuring, January 2009 from The Chronicle of Higher Education: Money and Management: http://tinyurl.com/7kess7 Brookdale Community College, in New Jersey, is advising local businesses that will be hurt by the impending closure of Fort Monmouth. The college is devising short-term training programs to help former military employees make the transition into other professions, including computer networking, project management, and teaching, says Linda Milstein, vice president for outreach, business, and community development. The majority of the base's 5,500 workers are civilians, and many are expected to stay behind. Colleges Play Crucial Role in Military's Restructuring - Chronicle.com Those familiar with the base-realignment process, which is commonly known as BRAC, say colleges--in particular community colleges, with their experience in work-force education and their ability to build up programs quickly — will play a vital role. Across the country, colleges like Anne Arundel are devising strategies and designing curricula to meet the demands created by the substantial troop shifts. They are adding degree and certificate programs and refashioning or expanding others, in areas as diverse as network security, procurement and contracting, and nursing. The colleges are attempting to anticipate the midcareer training needs of military personnel and government contractors who are moving. They are trying to prepare local residents, like Ms. Sanborn, to fill positions vacated by defense workers who opt not to make the move. And in places where the armed forces are scaling down or pulling out completely, they are stepping in to teach workers new skills and counsel small businesses that have relied on a military clientele. **A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Re: [AsburyPark] Homelessness and Homosexuality
In a message dated 1/9/2009 3:00:50 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, j...@educatingforjustice.org writes: I think that people in the gay community in Asbury Park will find this story particularly interesting-note the stat on the percentage of homeless teens that are gay. The one young man who is featured in the video seems a far cry from how some in Asbury Park have characterized the homeless in the past (ex-cons, pedophiles, rapists, murderers, and people with a history of violence who are unwanted individuals). == Jim, I joined SUFA not because I believed any of the characterizations you mention above, but because of MSM's policies regarding any gay homeless men who might seek shelter from them or at the proposed JSRM. JSRM claimed it would offer services to any homeless, but there were special prerequisites for gays to reject their orientation and get special counseling for their addiction. The research I did at that time indicated that Asbury Park, more than our neighboring towns, was likely to attract homeless gay teenagers seeking food and shelter, and I campaigned strongly against the mission because of its insensitivity to the issues documented here http://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/pdf/national/20070307Seattle_Study_LGBT_ youth.pdf, here http://tinyurl.com/84byuq , and here http://tinyurl.com/88yny7 . (E.g.: Three former 'ex-gay' leaders were scheduled to make public apologies Wednesday in Los Angeles for the harm their ministries caused gays and lesbians, and will call for those still involved in ex-gay therapy to acknowledge their part. Those ministries now avoid the term ex-gay. They prefer to say they are ministering to people struggling with same-sex attraction. ) Such uncredentialed ministries don't alleviate suicides; they aggravate them, especially among teenagers. Back in early 2007, the following letter to you (not written by me) was made public as the letter writer noted. As far as I know, you did not respond to this letter, and JSRM's supporters never concretely refuted David's Scott's position on the matter. And so I intensified my efforts to support SUFA with research and money. === Excerpts from that letter: Mr. Keady- Before answering my questions know that this letter has gone to you and the Asbury Park GLH website.I just want to be fair. I have read your email on the Asbury Park GLH site. I want to know why you do, in fact, support a mission that stands for treating Homosexuality as a disease and yet will discriminate against those very people they feel are diseased? Why you also feel it is propper for the mission to be located so close to schools?...And last but not least how you support a business that will council addiction when they don't have a license to do so.? [AsburyPark] Find a New Business Plan before You Vanish
An overview of the newspaper vs. the web issue recently discussed here from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School for Business. Specifies the problem(s) and offers possible models for the future. Worth a full read for those of you in the business of publishing, for those of us consuming information, and for those of us willing to pay for professional journalism. Athttp://tinyurl.com/9bl6fz Oversimplified excerpts below: == January 7, 2009: Urgent Deadline for Newspapers: Find a New Business Plan before You Vanish The problem, from a business point of view, is that few of today's eager, fickle readers are willing to pay for their online news So how can a professional, reliable news product turn a profit for its investors? Wharton's media-watchers offer a few ideas: * The Philanthropic Route:...Re fears that a decline in serious reporting about public affairs will harm our democracy * * The Niche Route: Forget Capitol Hill. Forget the State House. Maybe even forget City HallOne key to success is to provide news and information for the most local of levels. I'm talking block-to-block, citing localized web presences that have proved successful in Europe and Latin America * * The Pay Route: Subscriber strategies aren't always doomed. Companies from Dow Jones, which publishes the Wall Street Journal, to any number of small trade magazines that offer highly specialized information to affluent subscribers manage to keep content behind a for-pay firewall...defying the conventional wisdomThe key is a degree of specialization, whether by locality orrelease partial information or certain stories...as a way to get traction and then drive people towards the web site, which could be a pay model. It's a classic, we're going to give some stuff away for free model. Pay satellite radio has flourished despite the availability of free AM and FM radio and the ubiquity of iPods. * * The Participation Route: One way the Internet differs most dramatically from print is readers' expectations of being able to interact with one anotherBut this contrasts with the traditional newspaper idea that content, even content that is labeled opinion, is produced by professionals with specific training and standardsnews companies are going to have to...transition to an online existenceWhatever gives him or her a chance to say something, to have an opinion, even if 90% of it is self-serving, it works. * * The Commercial Route:...Survival online will require rethinking basic values about things like bias, opinion and, especially, advertising The harshest critics of newspaper firms have compared them to the railroads of a half-century ago--unable to cater to customer desires, even as technological change threatened to wipe them out. A more charitable comparison might be to the music business, which saw its profits dissolve in the face of free downloading Of course, there's another parallel: The music business, criticized for bland, generic acts, was flawed in ways that left customers broadly unsympathetic to its plight, just as daily broadsheets, after two decades of cuts and Britney Spears coverage, have lost much of their claim to nobility. The question is whether there's a model that can revive the good pieces--the investment in people who consider it a professional duty to spread the word about everything from local traffic disruptions to national political chicanery--while giving customers the whole world of options they now expect. Either way...some newspapers will remain--as boutique products for a niche market willing to pay a premium for the charmingly old-fashioned idea of a hand-delivered piece of paper printed with news stories. == [TRT's and the Coaster's sites seem to be a hybrid, nudging visitors to buy or subscribe to the print editions.] _Urgent Deadline for Newspapers: Find a New Business Plan before You Vanish - Knowledge @ Wharton_ (http://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article.cfm?articleid=2130#) _http://tinyurl.com/9bl6fz_ (http://tinyurl.com/9bl6fz) **New year...new news. Never bought into it myself, and it looks like Howard Stern may be sorry he made the switch._http://tinyurl.com/a457d9_ (http://tinyurl.com/a457d9) But in the same article is this: Even though Sirius XM is one of the very few media companies whose revenue and number of subscribers are growing these days, a dime and a nickel will get you a share of the company's stock (with some change left over). [52 week change = minus 95 %] I guess Wharton is referring to the public's continuing appetite for pay services, not whether an individual company has made wise decisions. I always opted for at least one premium TV and one On Demand package; then added NetFlix early on, 3 at a time for approx $18/month. Then, oddly, was able to get unlimited On Demand from Netflix by adding the Roku gizmo for less money, $9/month (less than the price of admission at most theaters). Now Roku offers Amazon's OD with more companies to follow So some media companies with smartz have been able to thrive in a fast changing technology environment. As a media consumer, I knew Netflix would thrive when I saw the 60 minutes segment in 2006. _http://tinyurl.com/2ch4ve_ (http://tinyurl.com/2ch4ve) Back then he was already gearing up for streaming directly to TV, not PCs. But what impressed me most was his understanding that customer service was paramount. NetFlix stopped hiding their contact numbers and went to 24/7/365 live phone reps. Amazon has a similar system with almost immediate call backs when you submit your phone number online. **New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines. Your link to The Kicker, a blogger, at Columbia Journalism Review is fine. She simply repeats the NYT story about DJ's email to Carr. Congrats to TCN and DJ for the publicity. BTW: the UPDATE and hyperlink to Mark Potts which are now part of her blog argue forcefully against the idea of print media shunning the web. But that debate is also of no concern to me. Let the marketplace decide. Here, in full deja vu, is what your link brings up: The Kicker — December 22, 2008 09:18 AM NJ “Plog” “Shuns Web, And Thrives” By Liz Cox Barrett The TriCityNews, an Asbury Park, NJ alt weekly with a print run of 10,000, “ is prospering precisely because it ignores the Web,” reports David Carr in today’s New York Times. “Why would I put anything on the Web?” asked Dan Jacobson, the publisher and owners of the newspaper. “I don’t understand how putting content on the Web would do anything but help destroy our paper. Why should we give our readers any incentive whatsoever to not look at our content along with our advertisements, a large number of which are beautiful and cheap full-page ads?” A “‘plog’, a blog on paper” is how Jacobson describes his paper, which employs three full-time staffers and a part-timer . “A little ray of light” in the media beat is how Carr describes the story of the TriStateNews, which is “ double-digit profitable, and has been growing at a clip of about 10 percent a year since it was founded in 1999.” A real made-for-David-Carr’s-column story (which didn’t escape the publisher, who emailed the TriCityNews’s good news to Carr). UPDATE: Carr’s headline should be the much less striking: “Local Newspaper Shuns Non-Local Information And Thrives,” argues (more or less) Recovering Journalist Mark Potts. “Contrary to what Carr and Jacobson believe, the secret to the TriCityNews’ success probably isn’t that it fiercely eschews the Web. It’s that it’s fiercely local.” Way to dim Carr’s little “ray of light.” _http://www.cjr.org/the_kicker/nj_plog_shuns_web_and_thrives.php_ (http://www.cjr.org/the_kicker/nj_plog_shuns_web_and_thrives.php) === (http://tinyurl.com/7akd7n) **New year...new news. I too like DJ and wish him success. Consider my comments as gentle noodging. My take on the financial pressure being felt by print media is that those readers who used to buy a paper for want-ads, classifieds, tv schedules, lottery numbers, sports scores, et al. have gone to more immediate sources or lists like Craig's which are free. I'm guessing that a huge chunk of that readership weren't really print news consumers. I'm also guessing that there is a narrower audience out there which is still interested in news and analysis by professional journalists both in print and online. I'm willing to pay for both. Try not to interpret any one post or subject thread as someone's overall world-view. It is a human tendency to comment more often when Man bites dog instead of Dog bites man, but I do take heart that, in the long run, our checks and balances do work, especially when the Fourth Estate is thrown in the mix. [AsburyPark] Irony Boosterism: triCityNews IS on the Web
Situational irony... Jan. 1 issue of triCityNews is mainly all about the WEB coverage of the NYT print and WEB article Newspaper Shuns Web: Half the cover page; every word of the publisher's message, p. 6 and spilling over to cover every inch of space on pp. 46--47, including mail, and trailing off finally on page 56. Hyper-Boosterish, to modify Carr's word. More coverage than any other issue in the paper, including the upcoming city council elections. The irony? This Fifteen Minutes of 'Dew' Fame could not have been possible without DJ's WEB email to c...@nytimes.com, the NYT's presence on the WEB and other news outlets and the media bloggers who picked up the story from...the WEB. So sorry to notice how few of the advertisers are by Asbury Park retailers. Happy to see, buried way deep on page 22, TCN's suggestion that Amy Quinn apply for the empty slot on the city council. **New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines. Thanks Jennifer. In a message dated 12/29/2008 12:04:58 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, jennifern...@yahoo.com writes: Mario, The article is interesting and could be valid except we are missing a very necessary component unless the childless households are also retired. We do not have enough local industry in Asbury Park to support all of its residents. There are very few large scale walk-to jobs. Back in the day, Asbury Park had the phone company and the gas company. We do not have those types of jobs anymore. I would love to live and work in the same city. I would love to stop driving except when absolutely necessary. In order to create that type of city, we need to lure larger employers here. We have the buildings. We have the trains and we could have better buses or an in-city transit system. For a city to be healthy, it needs to have a balance of incomes. There needs to be affordable housing and reliable affordable transportation for the lower income workers. It really does need a good school system for the middle and lower income workers because otherwise it won't have balance in the distribution of the population. AP has a lot going for it especially location and the small town disguised as a city aspect. It is on a major transit route. It has one industry in tourism and entertainment. I also has small businesses and local professionals like Realtors, lawyers, doctors, etc. It does have the state office building too. That is definitely a half-full glass. If we want to fill the glass to the top then we need to attract larger businesses. That isn't impossible. There are great tax benefits for a business to open AP facilities. I looked into doing that when I was at Bank of NY. We were going to relocate our Manasquan operations office and our Bradley Beach branch to Grand Ave. We did that in Newburgh, NY and it made sense to do the same here. I don't know too much about schools so I'll leave that up to those who do. I do know communities. They work best when there is a mix. That is especially true for smaller cities. I think the glass could fill up. Jennifer Yahoo! Groups Links **One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail. Try it now. Intended to complement some recent discussions here about the uses of light in Asbury Park. “Full Constant Light,” (NYT Art, 12/26/08) Excerpts from _http://tinyurl.com/9vxaht_ (http://tinyurl.com/9vxaht) At this dark time of the year, we like light. So we have festivals of light: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve too…. To a large degree cities are constructed of light enclosed and released… .Same city, different impressions of light. But this is true in any neighborhood, anywhere, just as it is true of images of light in art spread across the city. And the way light looks depends a lot on who’s looking…. Time passed. Culture changed. And light, ever volatile, has taken on many other roles in art. Sometimes it is used to obscure rather than clarify meaning. Sometimes it serves as a warning rather than a warming agent…. = (http://tinyurl.com/9vxaht) Preserving the Starry Night in the Glare of Light Pollution December 26, 2008, By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Excerpt from _http://tinyurl.com/8yegpx_ (http://tinyurl.com/8yegpx) [A] team of night owls whose job is to gaze at the sky and monitor light pollution in parks….The International Dark-Sky Association, an Arizona-based nonprofit whose slogan is “Carpe Noctem,” has noticed an increased awareness of light pollution, but acknowledged limits. = Carpe Noctern: Love it! [AsburyPark] Asbury Park's Grand Arcade for Bouncing Souls: A Happy Promo
From the fun guys at Red Bank oRBit, (always a fun read): Excerpts from http://tinyurl.com/7fl669 A BOUNCING BACK, A HAPPY LANDING The major event heretofore known as :Home for the Holidays has been rechristened Homeless for the Holidays-- a reference to its forced exodus from the Stone Pony, where emergency roof repairs (the architectural equivalent of nervous exhaustion) have extended to a point in which many of the scheduled shows have had to be hastily relocated. While most of those bookings have found safe harbor at the nearby Wonder Bar..., the three-night stand by the Souls..., needed a bit more space for the loyal BS fanbase The Homeless homestand has been reassigned from the low-ceilinged environs of the Pony, to the wide open spaces of the Grand Arcade--that soaring and reverb-drenched lobby/atrium between the Boardwalk's Convention Hall and Paramount Theatre. With its spanking-new collection of bars and fast-food eateries (plus the official Boardwalk Christmas tree), it's an intriguing choice of venue...; one that promises to offer much more in the way of bouncing room. For a band that's been identified as a New Brunswick phenomenon for much of their long history, the Bouncing Souls certainly adopted the salty old precincts of Asbury Park as a sister city of sorts. Manager Kate Hiltz lives there Even though the road has taken them to some far-flung corners..., there was really never any doubt as to where to hold this special slate of anniversary shows...a pretty impressive treat in store this weekend Chalk it up as another coup for a group of guys who have rather nimbly navigated the shifting ice floes of the music industry meltdown. A group that’s long outpaced countless contemporaries, various venues..., and continues to entice new generations of converts into its fold. What’s not to love? FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26: The Bouncing Souls with The Casualties, L.E.S. Stitches, Static Radio NJ; SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27: The Bouncing Souls with Token Entry, Vision, Higher Giant atThe Grand Arcade. [AsburyPark] Another POV: TCN - All Paper, No News
All Paper, No News 23 Dec 2008 From http://tinyurl.com/7b6rol People who are into journalism and newspapers and the web and the death of print have been all a-twitter over the NY Times story today about the triCityNews, a little alt-weekly in Monmouth County, New Jersey. I spent a good bit of time in Monmouth County years ago, when I was a consultant and had a client there, but unfortunately my tenure in the area predates the triCityNews' era of journalistic service to the community. So I was interested to see what was so notable about this little paper. The Times bemusedly profiles the little alt because, it claims, the triCity shuns the web. They quote Dan Jacobson, owner and publisher of the paper, at some length in the piece. I've concatenated all of Jacobson's quotes in the article together here. [...] In all of his quotes about the web and his business model and other newspapers and his big, beautiful full-page ads, Dan Jacobson never once mentions serving his community, researching a story, publishing information of any utility or value to his audience, or actually committing any act of journalism. That's not to say Jacobson doesn't value journalism. It's just that it's absolutely clear that his priority is his advertisers. Thus, I submit that the triCityNews, while certainly a paper, is likely not a newspaper. I would ask for clarification or rebuttal, or seek evidence to dispute this conclusion by looking in the paper itself, but that's not possible for those of us not physically located in its distribution area. I would invite Mr. Jacobson to respond in person here to this assertion, but I don't want him to compromise his apparent belief that the audience he serves doesn't not seek clarification of information through the web. I do, however, invite David Carr to explain his belief that this constitutes a ray of light in [his] e-mail [sic] inbox. I won't hold him accountable for the headline on the story; we all know to blame the editors for that. But even a lighthearted story should have at least its fundamental assertions somewhat resemble the truth. And, as a minor side note to Mr. Jacobson, whom I suspect may read the response on the web despite his contempt for our medium: The word plog is currently the subject of a trademark application by Amazon.com. They are an online concern that has apparently found a way to make money merchandising products online, even when they aren't making use of big, beautiful full-page ads. Just as someone will succeed in doing in Asbury Park, someday soon. **One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail. Try it now. [AsburyPark] Another POV: TCN Coverage Like the Dew
From Recovering Journalist: Jumping to the Wrong Conclusion (a professional POV) a Comment following it (Somewhat testy - lol): http://tinyurl.com/77zc3h New York Times media columnist David Carr, who is staking out a position as a staunch defender of the primacy of the traditional newspaper, has come up with a doozy: a small weekly community newspaper in New Jersey that claims to be thriving. In fact, Carr says, The TriCityNews of Monmouth County is prospering precisely because it aggressively ignores the Web. Well, not precisely. In fact, probably not much at all. The TriCityNews' owner and publisher, Dan Jacobson, is proud of his print-only stance, Carr reports. Why would I put anything on the Web? Carr quotes Jacobson as saying. I don't understand how putting content on the Web would do anything but help destroy our paper. Carr and Jacobson have jumped to the wrong conclusion about what makes the TriCityNews a success. Indeed, many small community papers, with and without Web sites, are doing just fine, and will continue to do so even as larger newspapers founder. That has nothing to do with print, or the Web. It has everything to do with the fact that these little papers cover their communities closely–and have little or no competition in doing so. Web or not, their readers have almost no place else to go. The well-publicized storm that's roiling the newspaper business isn't really affecting many of these smaller players. When we talk about newspapers in trouble these days, we're primarily talking about metro dailies, which are being pummeled on all sides by competition from national news sites, bloggers, craigslist, hyperlocal sites, Yelp, and others. There are generally myriad other ways to get most of what's in most dailies. Want international news? It's everywhere. National news? Ditto. Sports? Ditto, plus ESPN. Entertainment news? Same thing. The one franchise the big metros can still defend, usually, is local news– and even there, they're probably spread too thin. In fact, they're spread so thin that they're often undercut by small community papers like ... the TriCityNews, which covers news and arts in the area around Asbury Park like the dew, as the saying used to go. In fact, the TriCityNews has staked out an even narrower niche, as an alternative community weekly with an edge. (Its almost non-existent Web site shows a copy of the paper sitting atop a toilet.) So it's a little offbeat, and doubtless a nice alternative to Gannett's Asbury Park Press, its nearest daily competitor. And the Asbury Park Press is no slouch at local coverage itself. That unique local angle is what makes the TriCityNews a success, whether or not it has a Web site. (Ironically, because its alternative audience probably skews young, it may actually be limiting itself by not reaching that audience online.) Indeed, it's tiny (10,000 circulation), keeps its editorial costs low, offers affordable advertising and has annual revenue that's probably a rounding error for a paper like the Asbury Park Press. Comparing its situation to the problems of big dailies is really apples and oranges. Long after metro dailies wither away, small community and alternative papers like the TriCityNews are likely to continue in print (and on the Web), because they're providing unique, focused content to their narrowly defined audiences (and advertisers). If there was a way to get the same stuff from an online (or print) competitor, these papers would face a lot of the same structural pressures as their larger cousins. And they're still feeling the same pinch from a lousy advertising economy, nonetheless. But their success really doesn't have anything to do with whether they're distributed in pixels or dead trees. It's the nature of their content that makes the difference. So contrary to what Carr and Jacobson believe, the secret to the TriCityNews' success probably isn't that it fiercely eschews the Web. It's that it's fiercely local. Comments: Not so fast, gentleman. To call Tri-City a community paper is an error and doesn't do justice to community papers like the 2 River Times and The Hub which truly cover the community. Mr. Jacobsons version of community coverage is to borrow stories from these papers, slam the local daily paper and other weeklies, and launch personal attacks on it s reviewer when there is a negative article about one of his advertisers. He doesn't cover meetings, thereby relying on second hand accounts of what went on in the tri-city towns and tends to beat the same old dead horse topics which are the only ones that he is familiar with. He's never met an advertiser or developer he didn't want to shill for. Tri-City wishes it was the NY Press or Village Voice, in reality it is a freebee, that one finds stacked on top of the trash can in the local pizzeria (how fitting). It

[AsburyPark] Ocean Twnshp's Bipartisan Zarro - New NJ Job Czar relentlesly positive
Any input here about how effective this guy might be? An optimist is going to bat for future of Jersey - Breaking News From New Jersey - NJ.com http://tinyurl.com/87azg5 After a successful career as an attorney and real estate developer, [Ocean Township resident] Zaro has joined the less-lucrative public sector and accepted the following assignment: Create jobs in New Jersey, a state in which they were disappearing even before the national economy tanked Zaro, 57, understands he's running against the tide. He is pitching the governor's agenda even though he is a longtime friend of Corzine's potential re-election campaign foe, Chris Christie. In a blur of meetings with business leaders, legislators and lobbyists, he is relentlessly positive amid all the economic angst. The way Zaro tells it, New Jersey's business climate -- along with its tax structure -- is flawed, but it's not the wasteland some describe. He says the state's assets, from airports and highways to beaches and an educated work force, more than make up the difference. Businesspeople here are doing a disservice by repeating this 'New Jersey's bad for business,' Zaro said in a recent interview. It's become like a Big Lie, and repeated often enough, people hear it and start to believe what they're saying. And it's self-defeating, because it's those same businesspeople who are damaging their markets. Democrat and prolific fundraiser, Zaro says he's proud of his bipartisan alliances -- the most conspicuous being his friendship with Christie, the former U.S. attorney whom many Republicans are hoping will challenge Corzine in 2009. Zaro says he swore 100 percent loyalty to Corzine upon taking the job, while also assuring Christie I certainly could not say anything bad about him in the course of an election campaign. Years ago, Zaro said, he and Christie bonded over Bruce Springsteen. He introduced Christie to drummer Max Weinberg of the E Street Band, which often accompanies Springsteen, and last December, the two saw the Boss perform in Paris. His record speaks for itself as U.S. attorney, but we all have failings, and his 120-some Springsteen shows probably falls into that category, joked Zaro, who admits going to 30 or 40 shows, a normal number. _An optimist is going to bat for future of Jersey - Breaking News From New Jersey - NJ.com_ (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2008/12/an_optimist_is_going_to_bat_fo.html) Happy Hanukkah, and Merry Yuletide. **One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail.
