Although I wouldn't quite classify it as audiophile caliber, it's certainly not among the worst sounding albums I've got. Brothers In Arms was originally released in 1985, making it an early rock album that was "a full digital recording". Perhaps they had several different masterings. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85882 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I don't mind 'bad' music since this is subjective - hey, I even tolerated William Shatner's recent 2 CD talk-a-thon :-). It's the *incompetence* that I get angry at where decent music gets willingly destroyed as suggested by many posts above. My list of disappointments: - Metallica - Death Magnetic (2008)- at least there was the Guitar Hero version - Depeche Mode - Playing The Angel (2005) - one of my favorite bands, what are you guys thinking!? The SACD release is significantly better - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (1999) - at least there's the "unmastered version" floating around - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium (2006) - at least there's Steve Hoffman's vinyl mastering - Red Hot Chili Peppers - I'm With You (2011) You know, the 2011 Chili Peppers album is particularly disturbing given all the frustration around Californication & Stadium Arcadium. Imagine, it measures as DR4 (foobar Dynamic Range plugin: dynamicrange.de/en/tt-dynamic-range-meter-plugin-all-platforms-available). They're even marketing this as "mastered for iTunes" as if it's some badge of honour! http://productionadvice.co.uk/mastered-for-itunes/ I really hope there's a "Lifetime Shame Award" for the likes of Vlado Meller ("mastering engineer") to celebrate his deafness and ineptitude. Great thread. Can't agree with The Ghost Of Tom Joad and Liege & Lief. I love both these recordings - perhaps I think they just suit the music well. There's lots of stuff recorded very basically that I think shines because of it. Some of it ancient, some newer. LoveTd Hawkin's "Venice Beach Tapes" and a lot of SE Rogie's stuff. Most of it seemingly recorded by holding a microphone up whilst they did their stuff. My vote is for most of Prince's early albums. Great, great music and excitingly performed, but who at Warners decided to let him produce it all? Awful. Chances of a remastering? I'm waiting for him to pop his clogs before it happens... Fairport Convention: Liege and Leaf. The vinyl sound is awful (a set of jigs and reels, for instance, sounds as though played in Das Boot (or should that be im Boot?), possibly behind some blankets, and recorded somewhere slightly outside it); the CD is at best no better; the digital downloads are about the same. Still a great album, though. It all adds to the nostalgic charm, as it did when it was brand new. The first great digital recording I ever owned was Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms. I was still in college and had a low/moderate Pioneer rack stereo system. I could not stop playing that CD mostly because of the talent but partly because of the quality of the recording. When I upgraded to the current system the recording and music has stood the test of time. To me, it's just simply a great performance and recording. The next recording/performance that many years later had a similar effect is Eric Clapton Unplugged. I still have company request that I play the CD or at least a track or two. -- artintampa artintampa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=49578 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85882 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I can understand the desire to listen to a good performance but if the recording is not palatable I would never play it often. I will always appreciate the effort and talent of the artist but inevitably I will start getting distracted by the poor recording. When I upgraded my stereo it became a much more revealing system. Many of the recordings I previouisly appreciated rapidly became shelfed (including Bridge or Sighs). I rarely take it out and when I do I remember why it's not played often. cliveb;671092 Wrote: > Strange - if someone insisted I name my favourite JJ album I think on > balance it would be Blaze of Glory. > > I don't detect any serious SQ issues. But I didn't bother to needle drop this and just sold the LP. So it must have been really bad. I do seem to recall there was a Jaco track on it called "Punk Jazz" (or something like that) which bopped along fairly nicely, though. But I think I can top Mr. Gone (as far as bad music is concerned). There was a Canadian prog rock band called FM, and their first two albums ("Black Noise" and "Headroom") are pretty damn good. I saw another CD of theirs called "Tonight" going cheap, so I bought it. Worst. Purchase. It's of course much easier to find than the DCC-version and also sounds "dryer" (like the DCC-version) and it definitely sounds much better than the previous "normal" CD-versions. +---+ |Filename: cover.jpg| |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=12768| +---+ -- Soundman Soundman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85882 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

When I was growing up. He was very underground in the Tampa area. He received very little air time on 98Rock. When he came in concert it was a very small venue in a small town about an hour from Tampa (which at the time was very small in itself). He was touted to have a similar Hendrix sound and the similar guitar style was very evident. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Worst sounding album in your collection
Lousy sounding CD's has been a fact of life for me as a 60's, 70's rocker. I can give numerous examples from the Stones to Genesis. Thin recordings lacking in depth. No 'meat on the bones'. I'm not sure if the LP's sounded better (in the time). I think they did. Due to several factors. Large efficient speakers (horns and 12, or 15 inch woofers) with tube amps was one factor. Not there now. Not a problem, just need to adapt. One blessing is disguise. It makes it easy for me to hear differences in the tweaks. Good tweaks will flesh out the bones. One album I really like - Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones. Nasty sounding CD, that is much more listenable now. I can say I even enjoy it loud. I know, I should be a classical fan. Believe me I have tried! I do like "The Planets". Mr. Sweetwater truly amazing! With a mere 13 posts to your name you've somehow managed to gleam a tremendous amount of knowledge in a very short period of time. One small correction to your otherwise very valuable suggestions: one should not be using the half wavelength but rather the full wavelength of the lowest frequency - using the half wavelength will result in a slight mid-bass "hump" and somewhat muffled mid-range. Go ahead, redo your calculations and you'll see, actually hear, exactly what I mean. For those of you who have, sadly, not yet revised your Touch set up in accordance with Sweetwater's guidelines I strongly suggest that you do so as soon as possible. Not quite as bad sounding as the LP - I think the quiet background and greater dynamics of the CD help it - but it still sounds so flat and lifeless. I actually like the music and lyrics. But it is definitely one of those recordings that is better listened to on crappy equipment that doesn't reveal it's flaws so brutally. When I bought the LP in high school I had a 15W per channel (maybe) Kenwood solid state integrated, basic Pioneer manual turntable (with the "S shaped" tonearm), basic Shure cartridge, and Advent II speakers (I think that's what they were called - they were bookshelves made of white plastic), which were an even cheaper version of "small Advents", for those that couldn't afford them. Even on that system it sounded sort of lacking, but good equipment like I have now just emphasizes how bad it sounds. The negative side of audiophilia - you find out how crappy some of your recordings are. -- firedog Tranquil PC fanless WHS server running SqueezeServer; SB Touch slaved to Empirical Audio Pace Car; MF V DAC3, MF X-150 amp, Devore Gibbon Super 8 Speakers; Dual 506 + Ortofon 20 (occasional use); sometimes use PC with M-Audio 192 as digital source. Joe jackson blaze of glory . The sound is thin and fatiguing :( it sound like it's gone trough and reverse riaa filter then someone by mistake sent this to the cd plant instead of the lp plant, except for that if memory serves me rigth the lp i once had sounded just as bad. The whole production is just bad, nobody could have cared about how it sounded, you dont need to destroy this with loudness was compression, just an example of where it gone wrong somewhere else. It actually has some dynamics intact but it has a very odd midrange and treble balance as it was something wrong when they monitored it during production and did some grave error. I tend to block the really bad ones out and never listen to them or get rid of them, but... "A Wizard, A True Star" LP by Todd Rundgren. Well over 50 minutes, and heavily compressed to make it playable. No real high or low frequencies, and the music (which I actually like) is sort of high pitched, metallic and "acid trip" sounding - by design. It still has pretty bad sonics. I can understand how all the instrumentation might muddy up the mix, but several of The Beatles albums had layers of heavy instrumentation tracks bounced down, and they sound great. What I really don't understand, though, is why the vocals sound so poor on ATMP. It's like they used a bad microphone, and nobody noticed during the recording session. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85882 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

My CD of -Brothers In Arms- sounds great. I don't have the disc handy, so I'm not sure what particular version it is, but it's at least 10 years old. Regarding my own worst sounding CDs: Many mid-1980s CD transfers of 1970s recordings are right up there on the list. Back then, the CD engineers were clueless about getting good sound out of tapes (often 2nd or 3rd generation) that were originally recorded, optimized and EQed for LP records. A few examples: - Santana: -Shango- - Queen: -A Night At The Opera- - George Harrison: -All Things Must Pass- -All Things Must Pass- was even poor sounding as an LP, which is a shame because it has some great tunes. The damn thing sounds like it was recorded with the performers inside a phone booth, and the microphone on the outside. And I don't know what's up with the engineering of Bruce Springsteen's albums, but nearly all of them sound like they were recorded with amateur equipment, including most of the recent releases. I know he's often trying for that "Wall of Sound" style, but it's more like "Wall of Crap". And I am a fan of his music. (The first concert I ever saw in my life, back in 1974, had Springsteen as the warm up act.) IMHO, the Springsteen album that has the best sound quality is the 30th anniversay remaster of -Born To Run-. Even the old live recording from -Hammersmith Odeon, London '75- (included with the 30th Anniv. -Born To Run- set) sounds better than -Live In New York City- recorded 1999-2000. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85882 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I realize > that it's much harder to top "Mr. Gone" and find an album that is > equally atrocious in both areas. I have lots and lots of truly great and timeless which by today's standards are terrible sounding recordings but at the time of their recording were not particularly bad sounding. I'm speaking of many of the early jazz recordings such as Louis Armstrong and the Hot Five, several of which were acoustically recorded, as in directly to a wax cylinder without any electronics involved. There is no bass, okay mid range and rather tin sounding high end but the music is outstanding. Many, if not most, modern popular music recordings suffer from two sound killing techniques. First and foremost there is the use of dynamic range compression, aka the Loudness War, which make the recordings sound decent on crappy computer speakers and bad car stereos but horrible on almost anything else. Second there is over use of multi-track recording so that final recording has no spacial information and usually sound better in the next room where the all the separate tracks have had a chance to blend together. An example of this would be either of Elvis Costello's first two Warner Bros. recordings, "Spike" and "Mighty Like A Rose" - proudly touted as be recorded in several places and sounding like it. -- ralphpnj Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels -> Snatch -> The Transporter -> Transporter 2 (oops) -> Touch 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/jazzfann/) ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85882 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
