[Ontbirds] Carleton Place Christmas Bird Count Dec 27th

2019-12-30 Thread iain wilkes via ONTBIRDS
It was foggy day for the Carleton Place CBC this year with 34 intrepid souls in
the field and 27 peopling the feeders. Despite the poor visibility for much of
the day the result was close the 10 year average with 44 species and 5327
individuals observed.

Highlights were a Northern Hawk Owl which had moved from its Ottawa region
locale to just inside the circle for Count day. As well two Bards (not poets,
though there were some in the field!) were seen. New records were set for
Pileated Woodpeckers at 21 and White-breasted Nuthatch at 194. A Chipping
Sparrow continues to survive the winter at a town feeder. A number of raptors
were seen (RT,RL, Bald, and Coopers) but not a single Snowy this year!

Count week produced a Saw-Whet Owl and a Red-bellied Woodpecker. As well a
Ring-necked Pheasant was clearly heard but it is most likely an escapee.

On the down side there were very few finches of any type other than
Goldfinches. The geese had all decided enough was enough and fled south. Not
a single Shrike was seen and this area usually produces a number. Perhaps they
are staying with the finches up north; never a good idea to leave a restaurant
when there is still food on the plate.

The day ended with food and refreshments at the CP Library provided by MVFN who
supports the CBC every year.

Thanks to all that participated and a Fab New year to all.

Iain

[Ontbirds] The Roughie and the Vole - Lanark County

2019-02-19 Thread iain wilkes via ONTBIRDS

Since there has been few reports of Rough-legged Hawks this winter I thought I
should share my experience today. As I crawled down Old Perth Road near
Almonte a large shadow cross my view revealing a beautiful Rough-legged Hawk
cruising across the road. He landed in a large tree maybe 50 m from the road
so I pulled over just to enjoy the sight of such a magnificent bird as well as
post it to eBird. After about 5 minutes he swooped down just inside the fence
and made two runs at a rather timorous beastie; a vole I believe but I am not
expert in Rodentia (if that is indeed the correct term)?

The wee beast scurried this way and that and succeeded in escaping to live
another day. The Roughie seemed unperturbed and flew off to the north. Such
are the real day to day events of life for most of the planets species.

Cheers

Iain

Directions

Get to Almonte. Go west as if to Almonte Lagoons on Wolf Grove Road and turn
south on Ramsay 8th. Go south until Old Perth Road and turn right. Look in
the open fields a few hundred meters along both in a the air and on the snow.
Maybe my brave beastie will still be there.

[Ontbirds] Carleton Place CBC Results

2018-12-31 Thread iain wilkes via ONTBIRDS

On December 27th, 38 hearty field and 20 feeder observers participated in the
68th Carleton Place Christmas Bird Count. It was a cold day with sun in the
morning and cloud in the afternoon.

This years count is very close to our 10 year average with over 5400
individuals and 45 species. Despite this we had a number of records set and/or
tied for:

Mallards at 68
Wild Turkeys at 498 – keep setting a new record every year
Coopers Hawk 3 – tying the old record. One lived in my backyard on count day
enjoying the Starlings for snacks
Snowy Owls 3 – tied the old record, all close to Hwy 7
Barred Owls 3 – a new record
Pileated Woodpecker 18 – a new record
Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 – tied the old record
White-breasted Nuthatch 176 – a new record

We also had a hand full of Rough-Legged and Red-tailed Hawks, as well as 1
Kestral. After several years of Juncos being at record levels their numbers
collapsed. Handfuls of Pine and Evening Grosbeaks as well as Redpolls and
Siskins were seen. Waxwings were back in abundance after few to none for
several years, with 630 Bohemians and 188 Cedars seen. As always the Bohemians
maintained their coolness by wearing berets, smoking Gaulois and discussing
Proust.

Happy Year’s End to all and best wishes for 2019

Cheers

Every year the Merlins nest somewhere close to our place. This year I have not

who flies in; the Merlins! Beautiful pair swooped in low over the yard and
landed in a neighborhood yard where they typical nest. Smiles all round.

[Ontbirds] Carleton Place Christmas Bird Count Dec 27th

2017-12-30 Thread iain wilkes via ONTBIRDS
The Carleton Place CBC took place on Dec 27th in the middle of this bitterly
cold patch (B. Frum Day) . 38 brave souls wandered the fields and forests
typically with only their eyes visible. In addition 22 feeders were monitored.

The count had low numbers both of individuals and species; 5379 individuals and
40 species; both roughly 10% below the average. The main reason being the
geese had all but left, there are still very few northern birds (Grosbeaks,
Redpolls, Siskins, Crossbills and Finches) as well as few raptors.

Of course there are always highlights including 4 records:

  *
First Shorted-eared Owl ever for the count seen sitting on a step
  *
Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 - only second one every seen on a CBC
  *
Rusty Blackbird 1 - tied existing record
  *
Dark-eyed Juncos 310 - up over 10% from the last record

Every one enjoyed a post snack and drink at the count in hosted by the Social
Committee of the MVFN.

A big thank you to all volunteers for braving the weather to contributing to
this worthwhile effort by citizens.

A personal Best o' the Season to all and a Happy New Year!

Once again any bird labeled rare leads to a message that it needs to be
confirmed before it can be submitted. This happened to me over a year ago and
many of you emailed me the solution but for the life of me I can not remember

Well it hasn't been a banner year at the lagoons. High water levels have kept
away the shorebirds. I visited again today and found the following:

1000+ Geese - mostly Canadas but I would not be surprised at a few cacklers in
the group

1 Snow Goose

3 Gallinules

Multiple Mallards, Teal amd Wood Ducks

A few Red wings

On the way home went down Rae Road west from Ramsay 8th which is the road
beside the lagoons. Found 2 Sandhills in amongst Canadas in the field north of
Rae west of Ramsay 8th.

The lagoons can be found by going to Almonte west of Ottawa then go west on
Wolf Grove Road where it meets Cty Rd 29 on west side of Almonte. First
crossroads is Ramsay 8th turn right and go a few 100ms to MVFN trail sign.
Follow the trail to the viewing stand. Stay on the trail as the rest is
private.

[Ontbirds] Lanark County Birds

2017-05-28 Thread iain wilkes via ONTBIRDS
I did a couple of day trips around the county birding this week and came up
with the following.First a couple of days ago I went to the Perth Wildlife
Reserve and I can recommend this place to any local birder. The entrance
road had many warblers and vireos but the highlight was a pair of BB Cuckoos
that responded to my call and came within a few feet to check me out. I guess
they thought I was as cuckoo as them. The reserve has a couple of trails with
a good selection of birds ending in an observation tower overlooking the Tay
River marsh. Here you can hear the many resident Common Gallinules. In
general you can't see them but if you play 10 seconds of their call they
respond. Black and Common Terns also frequent the marsh.Again a pair of BB
Cuckoos stopped by to say hello. You can get there by going west from Ottawa
to Perth. Go through town until Cty Rd 1 out of the south end of town. A few
km south is Wild Life Rd, go east on it to the entrance. It is well ma
 rked.

Today I drove over to the north west side of the county near a place called
Poland. Several Winter Wrens were doing their ecstatic song. Hermit Thrushes
were calling om Umpherson road, every marsh has at least one Alder Flycatcher
and Blackburnians could be found nesting along the Cty Rd 16 near Poland.
Poland is north of Perth by going up 511 until Cty Rd 16 then go west to Poland.

Finally I checked out a spot for Bank Swallows and found them nesting in a old
quarry on Lanark 5a north of Cty road 12 on the west side of the road. This is
just east of the village of Lanark.

[Ontbirds] Yellowlegs Rusties Wood Ducks and a Vireo - Lanark County

2017-05-09 Thread iain wilkes via ONTBIRDS
After the deluge on the weekend which was followed by snow squalls yesterday I
was out and about in Carleton Place. First the Ramsay 7 flooded field just
north of CP ( extension of Thomas st.) there were 24+ greater and lesser
yellowlegs. Next at the O Kee Lee park in CP by the river were a large flock
of Rusty Blackbirds, squeaking and squawking like rusty springs. Next in a
field at the start of Ramsay 5a (just west of CP on Hwy 7) there were 5 male
Wood Ducks enjoying their new above ground pool. Finally at the corner of
Ramsay 5a and Quarry Rd a solitary Solitary Vireo was calling. A rather slow
spacey call that was not very enthusiastic.

Cheers and I hope as George once sang “..here comes the sun..”

Any Eastern Bluebird experts out there?
I was just wondering when Eastern Bluebirds arrive in Ontario and onto their

about right.

[Ontbirds] Prodigal Carolina Wren returns Carleton Place

2017-03-27 Thread iain wilkes via ONTBIRDS
As many of you know I had a Carolina Wren from late November through late
January then it disappeared. Last night I dreamt that my wife pointed the
Wren out to me in the backyard but I could not see it. Today at 2:45 it
reappeared at the back yard feeder. Now I am a total materialist, no hocus
pocus for me, but it is a fun bit of coincidence that he appears today.

Made my day

[Ontbirds] Trumpeters and Ducks Carleton Place

2017-03-20 Thread iain wilkes via ONTBIRDS

On this lovely spring morn I stopped at the Hwy 7 bridge just west of Carleton
Place. There I was treated to 2 Trumpeters to the east of the bridge and an
assortment of ducks on both sides of the bridge. There were lots of male
female pairs of C. Golden eyes and pairs of Hooded lovers and 1 Bufflehead.

As my grandfather used to recite every spring;

" the spring is sprung,
the grass is riz,
I wonder where the Bluebirds is.
The bird is on the wing but that is absurd the wing is on the bird."

Cheers

I stopped at the Hwy 7 bridge today. It is a Barbara Frum day out there.
BITTER. Sort of like ordering a triple "coldchiato" but I was rewarded. 5
Cedar Waxwings and 1 Ring - necked Duck.

Head west birds from Ottawa on hwy 7
Stop at the bridge over the river after Carleton Place. A good place for
migrating waterfowl.

[Ontbirds] Carleton Place Christmas Bird Count

2016-12-31 Thread iain wilkes
On December 27th 35 field and 25 feeder observers participated in the 66th
Carleton Place Christmas Bird Count. The day was mild, between 2C and 4C,
cloudy with a wind from the west that made it feel colder.

The results were much lower than last year's excellent numbers but still around
the average for our count day. There were just over 6000 individuals seen and
39 species. As well two count week species were seen (Snowy Owl and
Sharp-shinned Hawk).

Highlights

  * Wild Turkeys 428 (record high) which is the second year in a row a new
record has been set
  * Waterfowl - way down because the river is mostly frozen - 1 Canada Goose!
39 Mallards and 25 Goldeneye
  * Raptors were lower except for 3 Goshawks equal to past record
  *   1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak found at a feeder
  * 1 Song Sparrow and 1 Carolina Wren at a feeder
  * Once again this year finches are consistently low with no Purple Finches,
no Siskins, 7 Redpolls, no Crossbills and no Pine Grosbeaks
  *   181 Robins
  * Good numbers of Starlings 1223

The count is supported by MVFN and the count data and pictures will be posted
at www.mvfn.ca in the new year.

May your new year be fabulous

cheers

[Ontbirds] Carleton Place CBC Results Dec 27th

2015-12-30 Thread iain wilkes
Merry Christmas All
The Carleton Place count day took place on Sunday the 27th with rather
challenging conditions. The day started for the 41 field observers with
freezing rain followed by a morning of rain, freezing rain and sleet. By
afternoon the bad weather abated.
Our total of 45 species and 6752 individuals appears to be a very average year
but it was anything but average. There were two new species: Two Sandhill
Cranes just west of Ashton and a Snow Goose hiding with nearly a 1000 Canadas
that moved around between the Almonte Lagoons, fields east of Carleton Place
and the Mississippi River. As well six new records were set for numbers and
one tied as follows:
Canada Goose - 1801 (past record of 475)Mallard - 59 (past record of
35)Bufflehead - 2 up from 1Hooded Merganser - 13 up from 3Bald Eagle - 6 up
from 4Dark-eyed Junco - 275 up from 185Pileated Woodpecker - 16 -tied with past
high
Of course there were virtually no finches with just a few Redpolls and Siskins
showing up.
I trust everyone will have a happy New Year and terrific birds in 2016

[Ontbirds] Carleton Place Christmas Bird Count

2014-12-29 Thread iain wilkes
This years Carleton Place CBC took place on December 27th. A team of 41 field
and 23 feeder observers spent the day participating in the annual Audubon Bird
Count. The weather was mild with little snow left on the ground.
This year results include 46 species on count day plus two additional species
during the count week, which matches the ten year average. There were 5448
individuals birds which is almost 10% lower than the 10 year average. Notable
was the near complete lack of northern species, including low numbers of
Redpolls, Siskins, Crossbills and Snow Buntings as well as no Bohemian
Waxwings, Pine Grosbeaks or Golden-crowned Kinglets. On a positive note,
record highs were recorded for White-breasted Nuthatch (162), Pileated
Woodpecker (16), and Raven (46), as well as Juncos being only 4 short of the
record.

One Snowy Owl arrived early in December and is still resident on the edge of
town. Other Owls included 1 Great Horned and 2 Barred Owls, as well as a
Saw-whet heard during the count week. Raptors included 14 Red-tailed and 2
Rough-legged Hawks, plus 1 Bald Eagle, 1 Northern Harrier, 2 Cooper's and 1
Merlin.

There was nearly 250 Turkeys which is above the average but well below the
record.

My personal thanks to each observer for volunteering their time to contribute
to this important citizen science project and to MVFN for their support.

Best Wishes in 2015

[Ontbirds] 5 Gull Species Merrickville

There is open water just at Merrickville. On the ice a few 100 meters west of
the locks on the north side of the river are a few hundred geese and a number
of gulls; A few Ring-billeds, many Herrings, a couple of Greater Black backed
and 1 Glaucous and 1 Iceland Gull

You can get to Merrickville by going south on 416 out of Ottawa to Hwy 43 west.
Go all the way to downtown Merrickville. Turn right to cross the river (this
is still 43) and up to the stop sign and turn left which is Hwy 43 to Smith
Falls. Not far along at the little blue sign for entering Merrickville which
you see if you were going east there is an open area beside a house where from
the roadside you can view the ice. The gulls are hanging around there but they
do move up and down the Rideau in that area regularly. There is also river
Otter and Beaver active there.

good luck

[Ontbirds] Trumpeters, Pipits and Eagles

2014-10-25 Thread iain wilkes
Friday late afternoon I was coming home on Hwy 7 to Carleton Place. At McGowan
Lake and Hwy 7 there were 5 Trumpeters Swans which flew overhead, likely scared
by the constant gunfire from the other shore. Further on just east of Perth on
Hwy 7 in large open fields before Gardiner Road a flock of 20 Pipits landed in
a field of dried soya beans.

Today, I drove to Joes Lake in the top NW corner of Lanark County and saw 2
Golden Eagles over the lake. If you take Hwy 7 west from Ottawa to Perth then
north on Hwy 511 to the Road marked to Poland you end up a the bottom end of
the lake. Turn right onto the road marked to Flower Sta. and watch the skies
along the way.

Also there are Hooded Mergansers and Bufflehead where Hwy 7 cross the
Mississippi at Carleton Place.

cheers

[Ontbirds] Almonte Lagoons 2 trips one day - Snow Geese

2014-09-27 Thread iain wilkes
I visited the Almonte Lagoons between 10 am and noon today (Saturday). There
were well over 1000 Canada Geese including some good candidates for Cackling
geese. Also lots of Wood Ducks and Blue-winged Teal and a few Yellowlegs. As
well there was one Snow goose (white)

Mid afternoon I received a call that a Greater-white fronted Goose was there
and it would be a great addition to my Lanark County Big year so I rushed over.
Unfortunately I had problems with the direction.. on OntBirdsThey were
fine for getting to Almonte but then they said to cross Hwy 15 (Christian Rd)
and just west was the bird under the water tower. Christian Road is Cty Rd 29
not Hwy 15 and when you cross it the road becomes Wolf Grove Road going west.
The directions kind of ended there with something about the goose being there
(west). Well there is a soccer field on the right with a flock of geese and a
farmer's field on the left with a larger flock of geese. Neither had any sign
of a greater whiter fronted and there is no water tower at the lagoons so I was
confused.

Decided it was best to go to the Lagoons which is west on Wolf Grove to the
first intersection (Ramsay 8) turn right and maybe 100 m and there is a large
sign that directs you to the path to the viewing tower for the lagoons. Off I
went to find the following:

1000+ Canadas there, 1 Ring-necked Duck, a few Yellowlegs and 3 Snow Geese:
the White from the morning plus two dark ones. I did notice in the distant
east the Almonte water tower but no Greater White-fronted in line with it and
after a dozen scans unfortunately I found no Greater White- fronted.

So if you want to visit the lagoons. Please take 417W from Ottawa to the March
road exit for Almonte. Go west and right through town until you come to Cty Rd
29 (Christain St) and cross it. Go to the next intersection which is Ramsay 8,
turn right onto it and 100m on see the sign for the trail to the viewing tower.
The trail goes through the woods not over the fields

good birding

[Ontbirds] Warbler Flood In Lanark County

2014-05-14 Thread iain wilkes via ONTBIRDS
I have spent since last Friday when the first weather front arrived birding
Lanark County and so far I have seen 22 warbler species and 4 vireos species.
There is a flood of birds at many locations: Some of the list is:

Blackburnian
Chestnut Sided
Black-throated Green
Tennessee
Magnolia
Bay-breasted
Pine
Redstarts
Black-throated Blue
Parula
Ovenbird
N. Waterthrush
Common Yellowthroat
Wilsons
Blackpoll
BW
Cape May
Nashville
Blue headed Vireo
Philidelphia Vieo

Since these birds have been seen at multiple spots in the county the best way
to give directions is to provide the location names and a way to find the
location from a website

Carbine Road Trail
O Kee Lee Park
Tay Marsh
Almonte Lagoons
Con 5B Dalhouse
Mill of Kintail
Blueberry Mountain

You can find directions to these places by going to mvfn.ca and going to the
Explore Menu where there are birding and hiking trails described

I suspect eastern Ontario is experiencing the same thing as Lanark County

2014-04-08 Thread iain wilkes
On this miserable day, cold, rain, snow and wind I toured the few concessions
east of Carleton Place and north of Hwy 7. despite the weather I turned up:

Multiple Kestrels,
Song Sparrow,
Rusty Blackbird
Northern Harriers
Snowy Owl
Tree Swallows (4)
Cackling Goose after looking at 8 million heads, necks and bills. A very
diminutive bill, rounded head and stub of a neck
Killdeer

a great miserable day

If you want to find these birds I would go west from Ottawa on 417 to Hwy 7 and
west to Ashton side road and then go north. Just crisscross east and west on
side roads between Ashton Side and Appleton Side and search the fields

[Ontbirds] Grebes at Appleton

2014-03-12 Thread iain wilkes
Despite the crap weather I ventured to the Mississippi River based on a
friends' tip regards Swans and Grebes. At Appleton behind the Mississippi GC
are two winter plumage Red-necked Grebes. Down the river a bit at the Appleton
bridge is a single Pied-billed Grebe. There are several swan reports on the
Tay and the Mississippi from yesterday. I didn't see any between CP and
Appleton today but there are many places for swans to hide
You can reach Appleton from Ottawa by going west on 417 to 7 and west to
Carleton Place. Go north on McNeely until it ends in Hwy 49. Turn right and a
couple of couples along is the Appleton sign to the right. The GC is first on
the right by the river and the bridge is a little further along

[Ontbirds] Black-backed Woodpecker - KP Trail NW Lanark County

2014-03-09 Thread iain wilkes
As part of my effort to record as many birds as possible in Lanark County in
one year, I walked the KP Trail in the northwest corner of the county on
Saturday morning. As well as numerous Red-breasted Nuthatches, Blue Jays and
Purple Finches, I observed one Black-backed Woodpecker up close. I found the
bird after hearing a slow and not very rhythmic tapping which I tracked to
maybe 30 feet off the trail. Close by was a female BB Woodpecker working its'
way along a fallen tree trunk.

The KP Trail is a snowmobile and hiking trail between Kingston and Pembroke
and can be reached by going west on Hwy 7 from Ottawa past Perth to Hwy 511.
Take 511 north to Brightside, then left onto French Line road. Drive west to
Joes Lake where you turn right onto Flower Station Road (look for the Blueberry
Mtn sign). North until you reach Flower station where the trail crosses the
road. Walk the trail for 2 kilometers west while listening for the tapping.

[Ontbirds] Carleton Place CBC Results

2013-12-30 Thread iain wilkes
This years Carleton Place CBC took place on Dec 27th under reasonable
conditions. 28 observers took to the field combined with 25 feeder watchers.
While there were very few Redpolls and Grosbeaks, and there were also no
Bohemian Waxwings or Crossbills, the count still got 44 species total and over
5200 individuals. No records were set this year and no new species were seen
but the numbers of Turkeys and Ravens were close to the highest counts.

Highlights were:

371 Turkeys
3 Snowy Owls
1 Belted Kingfisher
32 Ravens
26 Robins
2 Song Sparrow
2 White-throated Sparrow
1 Brown-headed Cowbird

We also had 3 addition species during count week (Bald Eagle, Canada Goose and
18 Cedar waxwings)

thanks to all and happy new year

[Ontbirds] Algonquin Reprise - Finches+

2013-12-12 Thread iain wilkes
It was a cold day when Rick and I started out from the Ottawa area to see what
was around in Algonquin Park. The car thermometer got down to -25C on the way
there. On Hwy 60 between Whitney and the park entrance we picked up large
flocks of Purple Finches on the road, up to 35 in a flock. Also on the road
were flocks of Goldfinches totally over 100. Gray Jays sat on tree tops both
before the park and within the park before the visitor center. At the visitor
center by the feeders we found 20+ Evening Grosbeaks , 15+ Blue Jays and one
lonely Snow Bunting tucked against the building wall. Spruce Bog was devoid
of all birds in the cold and constant snow squalls which harassed us all day.
On Opeongo road we got 2 Boreal Chickadees just 50m from the entrance off of
60 and further down close to the ferry terminal were several Red-breasted
Nuthatches, 3 Golden-crowned Kinglets and another flock of Purple Finches.
Overhead on Opeongo flew a Pileated Woodpecker with a second just ou
tside the park on the way home.

It was a tough but enjoyable day partly inspired by our fellow birding buddies
Kevin and Bruce who were there a few days earlier.

Directions:

Hwy 60 runs the width of Algonquin and can be reached from Hwy 17 north from
Ottawa. Our birding concentrated on roadside Hwy 60 between Whitney and the
Park entrance as well as the Visitor Centre, Spruce Bog trail and Opeongo Road
all in the eastern end of the park.

[Ontbirds] Correction to Direction to Almonte Lagoons[]

2013-08-23 Thread iain wilkes

Recently I posted sightings at the Almonte Lagoons and I provided directions
that were in part incorrect. This has lead to some birders unknowingly
crossing private property which we do not have access to. Apologies to all for
this; All I can say is it was an unintended mistake on my part caused by some
uncertainty with the existing signage. I am reposting the directions below to
clarify how to get to the viewing stand along a path provided specially for
birders.

cheers and sorry for any inconvenience

iain

directions:

From Ottawa you can reach Almonte by going west on 417 until you reach the
March Rd exit and go west on it until Almonte. Go right through town without
turning until you reach Cty Rd 29 on the west side of town. Continue straight
through the lights at 29 onto Wolf Grove Rd and go to the first cross road
which has an old church on the corner called the Auld Kirk. Turn right and go
maybe 100 or so meters to a double metal gate on the right side. There is a
sign beside the gate indicating the viewing platform sponsored by Mississippi
Valley Field Naturalists and that the path is further up the road from the
gates. The entrance is 40 meters further along from the metal gates on the
right side beside a hydro pole. Therefore do not enter at the metal gates.

Take the path cut through the trees and once at the edge of the field go
immediately left and follow the path parallel to the road side tree line which
has been mowed. The path goes to the woods and through the woods to the
viewing stand. Please bird from the viewing stand only and obey all No
Trespassing signs.

[Ontbirds] NW Ontario Sightings Franklin's Gulls and Three-toed Woodpecker[]

2012-07-15 Thread Iain Wilkes

On the way home from Alberta Susan and I took a side trip to Rainy River area.
There are lots of Franklin's Gulls now on Lake of the Woods. Take Hwy 600
north from Rainy River to Fishery Road into Harris Hill Resort. From the dock
at the resort the gulls are numerous across the water on the spits of land in
the lake especially to the south west. Thanks to Michael Dawber of RR, I have
the Franklin's for 2012!!

On to try and see the Dickcissels but no luck at Buriss and Noriss roads just
north of Delvin on Hwy 11/71.

Finally down the road to Shebandowan exit from Hwy 11 which is between Shabaqua
and Quetico Park. Got a Three-toed Woodpecker because of Susan sharp eyes
which picked it up flying along the roadside.

[Ontbirds] Carleton Place Christmas Bird Count -many new records![]

2011-12-29 Thread Iain Wilkes

Merry Christmas to all The Carleton Place CBC was conducted on Dec 27, a cloudy
and mild day. We had 48 species total on the count day plus a Red-Bellied
Woodpecker and Great Blue Heron during the count week for a total of 50 species
which ties the old CP record from 1984. A total of over 8100 individuals were
seen which is close to the CP record of 8800 in 1987 and up from 2011 CBC by
nearly 2000 birds. There were 30 field observers in the 10 areas and many

[Ontbirds] Immature Red Tailed Hawk (Kriders not likely) []

2011-12-23 Thread Iain Wilkes

I got lots of very helpful feedback from birders and photographers on the
Possible?? Kriders I posted yesterday for Ottawa. Thanks to all of you. I am
no expert so I suspect it is just a very light immature Red Tail. The only
other bird close was in several pics of the Kriders x Red Tail shown in an
article on Kriders that Garry Sadler sent me which I have added as a short cut
below. Thanks Garry for exposing me to the complexities involved. So given my
lack of experience with this bird, i strongly suspect an immature Red Tailed.
I do have some excellent photos if any local experts want to see them and give
me a defintive answer.

Any way this is the joy of birding and learning! Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year to all.

cheers

[Ontbirds] Possible?? Kriders Red Tail Hawk []

2011-12-22 Thread Iain Wilkes

I sat for 10 minutes with a group of photographers at 12:30 PM today on Carling
Avenue looking at what I thnk was a Kriders. It was vey light especially
around the head where the whitish throat went all the way up side of the face.
Also a white eyebrow. The top and back of the head were light and streaked
with a little bit of darker colour on the top of the head. Base of bill was
yellow with dark at the tip. Feet were yellow. Front was almost all white
except for a few strong streaks at sides of belly going towards the center. It
looked very much like the field guides.

Birds was seen on North edge of Carling Ave west of Moodie (take the Moodie
exit north from 417 hwy) Go to the first large bend in the road (less than 1/2
KM) where the green field onthe south side is which is part of the old Nortel.
It sat on the fence and on the wires with photographers less trhan 10 feet away.

Can someone confirm it is a Kriders or can immature Red Tails look the same

Cheers

[Ontbirds] Prliminary Carleton Place Chritmas Bird Count Dec 27 []

2010-12-28 Thread Iain Wilkes

Merry Chirstmas to All

On Monday Dec 27th the 60th Carleton Place CBC took place. There were nearly
40 field observers which was up from the typical 25 to 30.
It was a sunny and cold day with a strong Winnie the Pooh north wind.
Despite this we had an excellent year. The preliminary count is 5453 birds and
44 species. Once the feeder counts are in it is likley there will be roughly
6500 birds.

The points to note are:

Goshawks 3
Bald Eagle 1 (beautiful adult male)
Peregrine 1
Ducks were low in numbers but 2 Black Ducks and a Greater Scaup were uncommon
sightings
Bohemian Waxwings - 1015
Goldfinch - 399
Redpolls - 219
In general finches were low in number
Ravens -23 - while not a record, it was one of our higest years

Tree Sparrows 75
Black-capped Chickadees 929
Crows 522
Blues jays were way down at 114 and Starlings were way down

Thanks to all of the observers both in the field and at feeders who made this a
great count day. Thanks to Georgina and Susan for their roles in making it
happen.

Happy New Year to All

[Ontbirds] Greater White-Fronted Geese and Snow Geese Carp []

2010-12-05 Thread Iain Wilkes

At 7:30 am I arrived back at Carp Rd just south of the town to see if I could
get the White-fronted that I missed last night as I left before they returned
at the end of the day.I was soon joined by two other birders staring at the
hundreds of geese hundered down combined with the bitter wind making it rather
challenging. Eventually one head was spotted in the main group on this side of
the water. Using the arm waving technigue we were able to get a lot of the
geese to at least put their heads up. There were four White-fronteds and two
Snow geese.

Good luck to anyone else - it just takes perseverence and lots of scanning
