Hi Alan,

Try the following:

This is how I do it. Open the control panel and go to Printers and Faxes.
Click on your printer name, to open it; find the print job you want to
cancel and press the delete key. Hope this helps.

Take care.

Dear Friends,
I had my computer jam, a paper stuck, after I cleared it, the computer
kept

giving me a message that a file did not print, and to go to somewhere, I
cannot catch the message, as it only flashes for half a second.
I am using Windows XP-Home, JAWS 11, and need to delete this file from the

Can some kind person tell me where to go, and how to get there!
LOL!
That sounds funny!
Anyway, the computer will not print another page till I clear this file

I imagine it is in the Printer Options, but I do not know how to get

[Blind-Computing] Can Embedding files into messages be done in Outlook?

2012-11-24 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,

I am constantly using Outlook Express to embed sound files (.wav or .mp3)
into some of my messages I send to friends.

It is simple to do with Outlook Express.

That means, the sound starts to play as soon as the message is opened. Sighted
People embed pictures into their files so the picture shows as a background
for their message.

Recently some friends told me they want to do this also but are using Outlook.

I have never been able to figure out how to do embedding files with Outlook.

Can Embedding be done using Outlook?

Thanks very much for any assistance or suggestions.

[Blind-Computing] need recommandation on external hard drives

2012-03-13 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,
Staples, Office Max, Office Depot and other stores, often use external hard
drives On Sale at fantastic prices to bring folks into their stores.
I would just check these stores out, ask if they have a external drive sale
on, and if not, when will they!

You can save money!

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] need recommandation on external hard drives

First and foremost, I disagree with the gentleman that said it mattered
what

type of hard drive manufacturer you decide to opt for.

Western Digital drives use Seagate drives, and the only thing you're
actually paying for is the name, so, you'll end up paying an extra 50 to
80

dollars just because you opted to go with a name brand rather than the
lesser known names like LACI or Razor, both of which use Seagate drives in
their enclosures.

In fact, the biggest consideration when purchasing an external drive is
what
type of enclosure you'd like to get, either a self powered one, which
means
forget about plugging it into a USB 1.0 port, or an enclosure that
utilizes

an outside power source like an AC Adapter.

The second consideration is the type of interface you want to choose. For
the price the gentleman stated of 160 dollars, you'll end up paying for a
1

TB drive from Western Digital and you'll have to end up with a USB
connection, when, for the same price, you can shop around, not go with a
name brand drive, and get one with a higher seek time and RPM, multiple
interfaces like network connectivity, which means you'll be able to access
it across the board on all of your computers connected to the same network
independently of a second computer, or firewire and SCSI interfaces.
Either

way, don't flush money down the toilet going for a name brand when the
enclosure is more apt to fail than the drive, assuming no accidents
happen.

I just purchased a rugged 2.5 terabyte drive which can be dropped from a
height of three to four feet and it won't get damaged. It cost me all of
110 dollars at Best Buy, and it's a LACI drive, which, as I mentioned,
uses

Seagate drives inside their enclosures.

Speaking of the drive I purchased, . I just remembered another
consideration you may want to consider, especially if you're going to be
sitting this drive on an unstable surface that rocks just from the typing
action of your keyboard.

Get a drive/enclosure that doesn't require it stand up on it's end, and
must

lay down on it's side.

I don't want to tell you the number of horror stories I've heard of people
who've bumped their desks with their hips, *I mean, we are blind after
all*,

and then hear a clunk when their hard drives tip over, then they're
surprised that they can't access their drives and it's ticking like a time
bomb. Smiles.

Either way, I would seriously not recommend you get a name brand drive
like
Western Digital, and pick yourself up a more economical drive that is
loaded

with features and not branding, I can almost guarantee you won't be
disappointed.

[Blind-Computing] AVG 2012 Free Version very slow

2012-02-17 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,
I have these past 4 or 5 years used the AVG Paid version very successfully, it
is very JAWS friendly, and I got used to it and liked it.

However, not being able to find a Paid version On Sale at any of the local
Office supply stores, like Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, and not wanting
to spend the full cost for the AVG 2012($64) , I downloaded the Free version.

I find that this version is pretty slow, that is it takes almost 3 times the
time to scan a folder, or my system's drive than the Paid version used to.

Is any one else having this same situation of AVG 2012 Free Version being very
slow?

Thanks for any responses.

[Blind-Computing] Need Free Version of AVG

2012-01-30 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,
I thought I would purchase the Paid Version of AVG like I did 2 years ago,
cheaper than they have it listed on the AVG web Site, from Office Max.
However, I purchased it for $34 last time, and that was on Sale.
It now cost $64 in the Office Supply stores, i.e., Office Max, Office Depot and
Staples.

I do not want to pay that much for it!

Can some one please tell me how I download the Free version of AVG?

I have gotten so used to AVG, I want to stick with it, so I will use the Free
version till I can find it on sale again.

[Blind-Computing] How many Terabyte Drives

2012-01-15 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Friends,
I have attached to my Dell XP-Home System 2 separate 1 T-Byte Terabyte
Drives, all is working perfectly.

I was just wondering, how many T-Drives can I attach, as these 2 are full.

I have plenty of USB ports, so that is not an issue.
But if I get another one, I will want to back it up, so that means I need to
get 2 more.
By the way, my T-Drives are Seagate drives, and they have gotten so
inexpensive lately!

All the office supply stores such as Office Max, Office Depot, Staples and
such put them on sale from time to time.
I just wanted to know if there was a limit on the number of drives XP-Home
would support.

Thanks!

Does anything at all come up on the screen during any part of the boot up
cycle? Also not to sound like a broken record but make certain that all
cables are connected properly. It might even be possible that your video
card has gone bad. Definitely try testing that monitor on another system
such as take it to a friend's house if you have to and see if it works at
that point.

You need to verify that it is the monitor or the card before you make any

Dear Friends,
I have no idea what happened, but there is no picture on my Monitor.
It is turned on, and gets warm like usual, my JAWS reads whatever program

I am using XP-Home, JAWS 11, and I have a Dell System Model OptiPlex

All the cables and wires seem connected just fine, and as I said, the
monitor even has the little signal lights on by all the buttons, of which
there is only 1 I know what is for, the off / on button, which I never
touch.

But turning this button off and on just gives me the sound signal that it
always did.

Anyone have any ideas?

If the monitor did not get warm like it always did, I would think it

I can use the computer, but some times I need my better half to look at

[Blind-Computing] Monitor is on, but no picture

2012-01-02 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear David,
Thanks for your reply.
No, this Dell is the only computer I have.

It was purchased the end of 2007 so basically is only 4 years old.
I could kick myself for not renewing the Extended Warrantee last November,
as I did the previous year, but it was getting expensive, and I never had a
problem with this Dell System!

Thanks again.

[Blind-Computing] no speech when I'm trying to proofread something

2011-12-24 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Rosemarie,
Just a shot in the dark, but when this happened to me a couple of times, I
discovered that I had accidentally did a left mouse button lock, which is
JAWS key plus the slash, or the divide key next to the numb key on top of my
key pad.

Hope it might be as simple as this.

Hi, everyone,

The subject line says it all. When I use the right arrow with control, I
don’t hear any speech at all. Any ideas as to what could be happening? I
don’t know what to do. I tried answering an email from a friend and tried
using control right arrow to go to the next word and no speech.

This is really frustrating. Please help.

Thanks very much in advance.

[Blind-Computing] Great Audible Tutorial for Burning CDs

2011-09-25 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,
And what a great audio Tutorial David created.
I could not burn a CD no matter how many help files I read on the subject!
But after following David's Audible Tutorial, I could finally do it.
He makes it so clear and so simple even a slow buck like myself can burn an
audible CD or a CD with mp3 files!

He has it on his web site!

data

so i need something that will do this
i did try burning the selected tracks from the CD to audio and not data
format but it did not work then i need something to chop out bits of song
words to use as a ring tone sound forge does it but you need to be
another

steven hawking to use that i would like something simple that you press
the
alt key or a key of some sort and select audio.
then when the burning process commences after it has finished the CD will
be
in audio and not data format this should then play on older CD players

You could do a straight cd copy for an audio cd.

For specific tracks you will first need to convert the track to mp3 on
your
pc then but an audio cd using whatever cd burning software you have.

[Blind-Computing] Using Open Book to FAX

2011-09-11 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Rick, and Friends
Yes, that is one reason I have stayed with Open Book 7.2

But I have never been able to figure out how to receive a FAX with this
feature in Open Book.

Is it possible?

I must assume not, as no one has ever given me a positive answer, but since
it is such a great convenience to be able to use Open Book to FAX, I am
dreaming there is a way to also receive faxes.

Thanks Rick and friends.

Hi Al,
Actually Openbook uses a fax modem in your computer to send the fax via
phone line.
The fax capability came about in version 6, and was dumped in version 8 or
9,
I am currently using version 7.
Seems to be the trend of all companies to eliminate useful features with

Hi Al,
They do have printers that connect wirelessly, but that is
what I was wanting
to avoid.
With a wireless connection, if the connection drops for some
reason, you
have no way to access the printer for troubleshooting.
As for the faxing and copying, I have been using both a
stand-alone printer
and stand-alone scanner in conjunction with OpenBook for
quite a few years, and have been able to accomplish what I
need to do.
Also, I have found that the all-in-one units that I tried
were too large to
fit my situation, and did not perform as well as my current
setup.
I prefer the individual units, also from a service
standpoint.
For instance, With an all-in-one, if the printer fails, and
it requires
servicing, then you are also left without the other
functions of the device.

Rick,

Can it connect to the router wirelessly too or just with
standard RJ45 network plug? I wish they would sell a printer
with just fax capabilities too but seems once you choode
that option the scan copy feature are there too. Once this
happens, as Gerald pointed out, you need sighted assistance
to handle a lot of the LCD screen choices, setup etc.

What brand of external drive is it, as that might be of interest to some

If possible/have space, first thing to do would be to now back up data on
it, etc.

One of the aspects of electronics of this type is that since they have
sort
of virtual/hard circuited wiring/electronic circuits on them, it means
that

something like a cracked bit of wiring might sometimes work, but a little
nudge/bump, and it might again mess up circuitry, so, yes, in case that's
relevant, rather try to make a backup before really moving it too much -
just in case the dropping damaged some of the internal wiring/circuitry.

Aside from that, it might also just involve a slightly dislodged
connector/plug in hard drive housing, which is less of a permanent issue,
but anyway.

And, this is all just my 2c worth, since might not be relevant at
all...smile

[Blind-Computing] sending text messages from your pc

Hello Friends,
Speaking of this situation, does anyone's cell Telephone service charge you

Obviously, I quit that practice after paying a hefty bill one month.

Does anyone else have these charges, or is A T and T just targeting me?

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Shutting Down skype 5.5

while still on skype 3.8 for my installed version of skype, I wanted to
try out the portable version of skype 5.5 with its facebook integration.

I found that when trying to shut down skype 5.5 from the system tray, it
locked up speech (jaws) and some parts of windows apparently necessitating
a reboot to get back to normal.

I then created a batch file to shut down skype with the /shutdown
parameter. This worked in that it brought up the console briefly and I
heard the sound for a program being shut down but when I looked, I still
saw an icon for skype in the system tray with its state showing as not
logged in. When I tried to close this out, I had the lockup syndrome again
with speech shutting down on me. I finally killed the skype process in
task manager with sighted assistence and this brought jaws back.

Can anyone confirm this difficulty shutting down skype 5.5 - and
potentially earlier 5.x versions as I had not tried skype 5.x in a long
while - or is this something particular to my machine?

I am using win xp sp3.

Thanks much

Doris

[Blind-Computing] Instructions to change the Normal template in Word.

2011-06-15 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,
I discovered with the help of a real Tecky, what I believe is the easiest way
to change your Normal Template in Microsoft Word 2007, although I believe
this would work in any Word program.
Perhaps I am the last to know this, but it is a great benefit to me, so I am
sharing this.

Here are the instructions to change the Normal template in Word.
I tried these and verified they work.

1. Open up Microsoft Office Word.
2. Press control-O to open a file.
3. Tab to the 'Files of Type' combo box. Down arrow until you hear your
screen reader say 'Word Macro-Enabled Templates (*.dotm).
4. Shift-tab three times to the 'Trusted Templates' button and press enter on
it.
5. Down arrow until you hear 'Normal.dotm' and press enter.
6. If using JAWS, press insert-T to read the Windows title bar; if using
Window-Eyes, press control-shift-t to read the title bar. In either case,
verify that 'Normal.dotm' is in the title bar, this is how you know you are
editing the template.
7. Use your ribbons to make whatever changes you like to margins, fonts,
paragraph styles or whatever.
8. When you are done, press control-s to save the modified 'Normal.dotm'
template.
9. Close word. Now, when you open up Word to create new documents, they will
be created using the Normal template you have modified.

are going to give me any trouble at security? Also will they do anything to
the device? Any other issues your friends might know about as I will be

[Blind-Computing] How to find Cookies folder

2011-06-03 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Mike and Friends,
Here is a easy way to find your Cookies, written up by Gene.
It is what I did and was very easy to find my Cookies this way!

The problem I have is which ones, that I do not know what they are for
specifically do I get rid of?

- - from Gene:
I will briefly tell you about one method, which I've never used. I'll
then tell you about another method, which I have used. I don't know if
there are advantages in using either method. If you ask on the list for a
comparison, you may find out more information. The method I use takes
some extended explanation.

Here is the brief description of the first method.
If you open the run dialog and type the word cookies, then press enter,
you will be placed in the cookies folder and see all of your cookies.
If you backspace once, you can then type the letter c to find the actual
folder. Copy it to the clipboard and paste it somewhere else as you would
when copying any folder. You will then have a copy of all your cookies.
At least, that is what I would expect to be the result. I've never done
it.

Alan again:
But I did this, and backed up all my Cookies, 243 of them on my external
Drive.

Some of course I know what they are for.
For example: Alan@FTP-1212 is a For-The-People Chat Rooms setting.
And then for example
Alan@Sendspace 3234c is a Sendspace Cookie, well, do not want to get rid of
that either.

But some are weird, like Alan@Winterproducts1a1a, never heard of this one.

You get my drift?
Well, how do I figure out what some of these Cookies are?

Alan

[Blind-Computing] How does one research their Cookies?

2011-06-02 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,
I had a problem with Sendspace so I was advised to delete my Sendspace
Cookies.
That was not a problem, they were all marked Alan@sendspace (1) or such.

But I discovered I had 270 Cookies, some of which I knew what they were, Chat
Room Sights like FTP or such, but others I had no idea

I tried to search with Google some of them:
What I typed in the Search field with Google was:

What is Hilton-121 Cookie

I got a list of Girl Scout Cookies, and all kinds of Cookies!
LOL!
But not the Cookies one finds in their computer!
How can I research the Cookies that I have to know if I should delete them or
save them?

Thanks for your help.

And when I was using Spy Bot, I had the same problem, it isolated Cookies
that were Questionable but I still did not know how to look them up.

The paid version of AVG, latest version I am using is suppose to stop some spy
Cookies, and I suppose it does, as 270 Cookies for the number of Web Sites and
Chat Rooms and such I go to would probably put more Cookies in my folder than
that.

Thanks for any help!

Now, I scanned a document with Open Book into a TIF format.

Because whenever I sent a TIF as an attachment, no one could open it, so I just

But now that I have Office 2007 installed, I cannot find my Paint program.

[Blind-Computing] Warning for cCleaner users

2011-05-08 Thread Alan Dicey

I hope this will help some one avoid a problem.

Last night, I decided to check for cCleaner updates. I downloaded and
installed the update, and found out it came together with Google Chrome
browser. Although Chrome showed up when I browsed the last screen of
installation dialog with the JAWS cursor, but there appeared to be no
checkbox to opt out of installing the browser. So, when cCleaner finished
installing, I found Chrome on my computer. I uninstalled it through
programs and features, removed the remnant folders from program files, and
continued my work as usual. But when I attempted to activate a link in an
e-mail message, the following message popped up:

This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. Please contact your system administrator.

I checked if Internet Explorer was my default browser. It wasn't, so I made
it default. I restarted the computer, but when I entered a link in an
e-mail, I still got the same error. Apparently, Chrome makes changes to the
registry that don't get undone by simply uninstalling Chrome, and the
computer gets stack in the gray zone of no browser. The only thing that
helped was a system restore. Today, I decided to try updating cCleaner
again. I figured, I would make Internet Explorer my default browser and only
then uninstall Chrome, and hope this would resolve the problem I encountered
last night. It didn't work, I still got the error message and had to restore
the system. So, unless there is a way to troubleshoot or circumvent this
issue, I would recommend to stay away from updating cCleaner.

[Blind-Computing] Solution to the cCleaner problem

Solution to problem:

When you do a CCleaner update, when you get to , Install,do not press enter
or spacebar yet! This is where the option to install the Google Chrome or
the Google Toolbar lies. When you get to, Install, route the Jaws cursor to
the PC cursor, press the Pageup key to go to the top of page, arrow down 1
line at a time until you hear, Google Chrome or Google Toolbar checkbox is
checked. Now, use your left / right arrows to find the checkbox, use your
left mouse button to uncheck the box. Now, you can go back to the PC cursor
, press enter / spacebar to Install the CCleaner update. Hope this helps.
Take care.

Are you talking about your dell computer's service tag number?
Or are you wanting the windows operating system serial number.

If you want the service tag number, there should be a sticker on your
computer with that serial number,
If your wanting the windows serial number, you can use a program called,

Hi Alan,
If you are looking for the licensing information for the operating system,
it should be on a tag located on the back, or bottom of the computer case.
Otherwise, you can use the following utility to locate the information:
http://www.blind-computing.com/system_utilities/pages/aida32.html
Unzip the package, to the root of C:, then run the .exe.
If you need any assistance, let me know.
The product identification number that is found in system properties, is
not the same as the product key, which is used to re-install Windows.
Using the utility mentioned above, will provide you with the product key,
product identification number, and a great deal more.
If you do have a service tag number, this can prove very helpful in
downloading hardware drivers from Dell.

[Blind-Computing] Dear Jacob , free youtube downloader link

2011-05-01 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Jacob ,
This seems too good to be true, and looks reallly easy and pretty neat.

What I do not understand, is why would a company or web site set up some up
that they cannot make money with?

But I will give it a try, as I said it looks really easy, just what a slow
buck like me needs!

Hi Kimsan,
I don't think that Sandisk makes USB soundcards, but you can give this a
look:

http://www.sandisk.com/consumer-products

You can also look at Creative Labs, maker of Soundblaster:

http://us.creative.com/products/welcomenew.asp?category=1

Some cards are about the same size of a flash drive, and others are a
stand-alone box that connects to the computer via USB cable.
In either case, keep in mind that you will need
a set of speakers for each soundcard if you are going to use them at the
same time.

First off subject lines need to be more carefully monitored and changed
when
appropriate. Second I wish to draw your attention to the fact that there
are
at least 2 free spell checking programs for Outlook Express on the
programs
page and I encourage those of you who haven't availed yourselves of such
an
animal to obtain and use one.

I know that English is not the primary language for many of you on here
but
the fact is for most it is and sad to say reading some messages I can't
tell
if some of you have even heard of the English language or not, no matter
if
it is supposed to be your main method for communication.

Please take more care in composing your messages to the list, there have
been some recently that I didn't even gather a clew what the purpose for
sending it was I am sorry to say.

I'm not trying to be critical, think of this as friendly advice from the
guy
who has to read everything that comes across these lists, have mercy in
other words. Also before I forget to mention I learned Italian at the
same

time I learned English as a little boy, so if I can do it the rest of you
sure can match my minor skill level in grasping sentence structure and
trust
me I never go without a spell checking program on any system I own.

Hi Alan,
Typically, soundcards are internal, either being chips on the motherboard,
or plugged into an internal PCI slot,
USB soundcards, as the name implies, are simply inserted into a open USB
port on the outside of the computer.
As I mentioned in an earlier post this week, they may be about the size of
a flash drive,

or a stand alone unit connected to the computer via a USB cable.
The simplest ones that plug directly into a USB port, have a jack for
speakers, and one for a microphone,
while the stand-alone units may be equipped with more connections and
features.

[Blind-Computing] To Defrag, do I have to turn Anti Virus off?

Dear Friends,
It has been a while since I defragged my Systems Drive, I only use 10 GB of
the 80 GB, because I have all my data files on external drives, so do not do
this very often.
But I have always turned my anti virus program off before doing a Defrag.
Does one still have to do this?
Or have things changed?
I have always turned my anti virus program off when doing a Defrag, since I
started using Windows in 1999.

I am using XP-Home with my Dell computer.

Thanks for any comments!

Here's a link to the wikipedia article on bitrate:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitrate

Aside from that, in terms of audio files, in general, the bitrate is
referred to in kbps = kilo bits per second - as in each second of the audio
track would include something like 192 kilo bits, and since each byte is 8
bits, that means 192 kilobits = 24 kilobytes per second, and since a
megabyte is 1024 kilo bytes, that means that if an audio track is 100
seconds long (to just use an easy number to work with) it would have a
size

of 2400 kilo bytes, which then translates to 2.34 megabytes.

Dear Friends,
Recently, I burned 2 dvs movies to CD for a friend.
One was 420 MB and the other was 130 MB in size.
They asked me why one movie was so much larger in size than the other.
Well, I had converted one movie from .ogg format to mp3 format, and forgot
to change the Bit from 320 to perhaps 128 with my Switch converter.
The other smaller size movie was already in mp3 format, so that one I did
not have to convert to mp3 as my friend cannot open and play .ogg files in
their Windows Media Player, they do not have the Plug-in I have.
Now, sorry to be so long about this question, but I had a hard time
explaining the difference in a audio file with a bit rate of 320 as
opposed to a smaller size bit rate.
I know when uploading or downloading I get a message stating I am
uploading at a bit rate of for example 50.5 KB/sec, and I download at
around 750 KB/sec, but how does one state the Bit Rate of an Audio
file?

I mean, it is not KB/sec as when you are uploading or downloading.

I do not know what or how you would call the Bit rate of an Audible
File, does some one have a clear explanation that I can understand?

I would very much appreciate it!

[Blind-Computing] Asking for Advice on Opening a Drop Box account

2011-03-10 Thread Alan Dicey
Hello Friends,
A friend wants me to open a Drop Box account, so we might share folders of
music and audible books and such.

I cannot remember the specifics, but some time ago, I heard that those Drop
Box accounts were a security risk in some way, not specifically in the manner
of viruses or that kind of thing, but that it opened a hole in your Windows
Security systems or such.

I am currently using a paid account with Sendspace, and it serves me very well,
but this friend does not like Sendspace, using the FREE account, one must go
through a lot of advertising, and I understand what he means with a FREE
account.

Any comments regarding your experiences or having a Drop Box account, I
would appreciate it very much.

[Blind-Computing] Urgent Need to Open PDF files

2011-03-10 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,
I am receiving some attachments in PDF format, and urgently need to read them.
In the past, I never had to bother with PDF files, but now I must.

I am running Windows XP-Home, JAWS 11 and I.E 7.

Which of the Adobe programs should I download and install.
That is which one would be most compatible with my system?
There seems to be quite a few to choose from when I check, and I find the large
selection a bit worrisome, as I want to install the right one!

Thanks very much for any assistance.

With Best Regards,
Alan

Hi Mike:
Thanks. The exact steps was what I exactly did a while back but when
trying

to do this drag and drop thing earlier this weekend, it did not work for
some reason but I just followed the steps you outlined and it worked how
weird. I mean I did the same exact thing earlier this weekend and it did
not

work but today it did. Oh well, thanks!

Hi Kimsan;

Yo dude, drag drop this into your notes folder! LOL

Use the key strokes, (CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH) for Drag and Drop .
This is used to drag items from one location and drop them in another.
Position the JAWS Cursor on the item you wish to move and press
CTRL+INSERT+NUM
PAD SLASH. You can leave the JAWS Cursor active, or you can switch to the
PC

Cursor. JAWS will keep speaking as you navigate. Once you have positioned
the JAWS or PC Cursor in the location to which you would like to move the
item, press CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH again, and the item will be moved to
the position of the active cursor.

Hope this helps. Take care.

 Good morning bunch:

I am using the latest jfw. I managed to perform a drag and drop once but
I

cannot remember how i did this. Example, lets say I have a list from one
to
six of shows to burn onto a dvd. I look at the list, and the last eposode
is
at the top of the list but needs to be at the bottom because 1 comes
before
 six you know?

I'm burning stuff using windows movie maker and when I select my files
and

when double checking the list it shows 6, 2, 3 4, 5, 1 and six is not at
 the bottom.

I performed a drag and drop to move six down to the bottom of the list
but

lol as I said I cannot remember how I did it. I know the keystroke but it
said something the pc or jaws curser needs to be at the dropped location
or
something like that. If someone can post steps on how to do a drag and
drop
using the example I am working with that would be awesome.

 Thankyou.

Hi All;

I heard about a new program that is getting started that will stop Spam
email messages for you. Click on the link below to get more information
a

better explanation on how this program works.

  www.unsubscribe.com

This sounds like a great program. Below is an email I sent to them
below

that is their reply.

   To whom this may concern;

As the subject line says, Is Outlook Express included as one of the email
clients that is covered by your program? I didn't see it in the list of
email
clients that was on the website. Also, I am totally blind use a screen
reader. Is your program accessible to / for screen readers? All
information
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.
Mike

Hi Mike,

We don't currently have support for Outlook Express, but it's by far one
of

our most requested mail clients and we're working on getting support for
that,
so stay tuned. However, in the meantime you can forward messages to
m...@unsubscribe.com
and we'll unsubscribe you from those messages.

We don't actually have a screen reader to test our add-ons with, but from
my

understanding of how screen readers interact with the operating system, I
don't
anticipate it being a problem for you on any of the add-ons we currently
support. If you do run into any issues using a screen reader, let us know
and
we'll certainly look into them. We want to help everyone unsubscribe from

Hi gang. Has anyone used one of the free Internet fax services like
Myfax.com/free to send faxes over the Internet? I recently received a
form that had to be filled out and signed and was thinking of scanning it
with Open Book, saving it as a .tif file, and sending it to the recipient
using the free Myfax.com service. will this work, or is this one of those
too good to be true deals? This seems like a good option for occasional

[Blind-Computing] what voice is used for Watsonibm super computer?

Dear Maria and Friends,
As you requested, here are

The IBM Challenge: Day2:

And finally, The IBM Challenge, Day3:

pretty good to me.

Can anyone record an actual Jeopardy show and send it to the list?

[Blind-Computing] How do you install Device Drivers

2011-02-14 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,
Please do not laugh!
But, I finally found out what kind of FAX / Modem I have in my computer, and
now I want to download the Device Drivers, so I can fax using my Open Book's
FAX option.

But when I do download the Device Drivers, how do I install them?

I say Drivers instead of Driver, because the Dell Technician said there were
2 Device Drivers for this particular FAX / Modem.

Conexant D850 56K v.9x

Then, we lost it, as he wanted me to click on graphical things on the Dell
Support page, and I could not read them, and this guy was a bit ... well
shall we say not used to working with a Blind person using Text to Speech
software, and more or less freaked out!

LOL!
It is not the first time I have had to leave a Technician Support person, as
they were speechless!

LOL!

Well, part of being a Blind computer user I suppose.

Anyway, I know what kind of FAX / Modem I now have, that much I will give
him credit for, but now, I want to try to do this on my own, as dealing with
a Freaked out Technician is not really fun, if you know what I mean.

LOL!

Thanks friends!

[Blind-Computing] In Outlook Express Deleted folder will not Compact

2011-02-03 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,
I am using XP-Home, JAWS 11 and Outlook Express 6.XX, which has always worked
satisfactory.
However, lately for the past couple of weeks, I cannot Compact my Deleted
Folder.
All the other folders, the In Box, and all the other Folders I have created to
have my message rules send emails into Compact fine.
However, when I try to Compact the Deleted Folder, I get a critical stop wav
sound, then a message saying The folder is in use by Outlook Express or
another application, OK

Even when I just first open up my Windows, and go directly to Outlook Express,
without opening any other Folders, I get this situation.

And when I try to Compact All Folders from another folder, I get this message
also.

I can however as I said Compact each of my folders individually.

Anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Thanks for any suggestions.

[Blind-Computing] One Reason I like my A T and T ISP

2010-10-12 Thread Alan Dicey
Hello Friends,
One reason I really like my A T and T ISP is because they have a anti virus
scanning system in place that catches just about every virus that would come
into my computer before my AVG even gets a chance to!!

I receive messages like this:
- -
Your ATT Yahoo! Mail Virus Protection detected the virus 'Malformed container
violation' in the file 'NORTHBOU.dat', attached to the enclosed email message.
We scanned the file using Norton AntiVirus but were unable to clean it.
Therefore, we removed the content of the attachment from the message. Please
contact the message sender if you want to receive the attachment. They must
clean the file and resend it before we can deliver it to you safely.

- -
My question is:
Do other ISP providers have anti virus protection?
And if so, do they catch most viruses before they even reach your computer?

Hi Alan;

The updates Rick Don are talking about are updates that are downloaded
onto the computer but, not yet installed. The updates you are speaking of
are updates that are installed. If you don't want these to show in your
Add

or Remove Programs list do the following.
1. Open the control panel and press enter on add or remove programs. You
will have a little bit for the list to populate, or in lamen's terms, for
all the crap to show up! LOL
2. Once the list is populated arrow down and when you have an entry /
program highlighted, tab until you come a dialogue that says Show
Updates

. If this box is checked, press the spacebar to uncheck it. Now the
updates won't show up in the list. Not having the updates show makes it a
lot easier to find entries in this list. A lot less arrowing.
Hope this helps. Take care.

hi
for some reason i always thought that shareware was completely free to use
permanently as it is passed amongst others to try and see if they like it
with no obligation to purchase, upgrades, or making a payment of any sort
freeware however i always thought was where the person who wrote the
program offers it free to use but will ask for donations.
and of course wear freeware has the option of being completely free but
has restrictions for instance some parts of the program can't be used
until the full version is purchased
and of course to upgrade to the later version requires the program to be
purchased
but as far as i am aware this upgrade only applies to freeware as
sharewear if given away
for example jaws and talks is free to obtain and use but to use the
program in it's entirety and have restrictions removed requires the
purchasing of the program

for example jaws and talks have a demo period for around 10 or 20 minutes
purchasing the program removes the demo period
i could be wrong and if i am i stand corrected.

hi Alan
thank you for reply.
unfortunately i have not gained a lot from the reply
i have been told that such a response message is part of outlook express
although i have never found it in outlook express
there are 2 people that i am going to ask but won't hold out much hope but
you never know.

you heard the term you only have to ask me
that's exactly what i will do.
i will ask everyone in person as well as the lists i subscribe to
and someone somewhere should be able to at least point me in the right
direction.
sobs law states that everything happens at least once in a lifetime so i
will continue to prove that wrong.

Yvonne,

I'm not sure if there are external programs that do this but
back prior to retiring, I used Outlook at the office on an
exchange server and an option under tools or actions was the
out of office assistant. You could customize your message
and control how it was sent out. I just looked on my home
version of outlook and don't see that option. Another thing
you may want to check out is many groups that I'm currently
part of greatly frown on auto responders and some have this
as grounds to be excluded from the list. Hope this helps.

hi
i noticed this when i was sighted but never took a lot of
notice of it or what it does or what it was really used for.
and of course it was not as widely used then as it is today
i am referring to the auto response message that goes to a
person sending an email when a person is unavailable to deal
with it for some reason
for example 1 of these is used when a person is away from
the office and is worded something like this
i am currently out of the office until 1st October.
does anyone know where i can get one of these auto response

a charge to use them?
thank you

[Blind-Computing] Age? Upgrading from XP to Windows 7

2010-09-11 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,
This is not JAWS or Blind Computing related, and I beg David's and those
not interested indulgence, but I must tell you this.

Out of the top 10 rated Blind Chess Players out of a field of 50 active
members of our

United States Braille Chess Association,
Well 5 of the top 10 are over 70, 1 is 75, one is 80, 1 is 85, and one is 89
years old!

So either Chess is indeed Gymnastics for the Brain and will help keep you
sharp, or it is just a strange coincidence.

By the way 3 of these distinguished gentlemen are rated higher than myself,
rated number 5, and can beat me most always, and I have been playing Chess
since I was 8 years old!

Mike, I beg your pardon, but age is really irrelevant in generalizing about
people's capacities. Age doesn't make me wiser than a `26 year old; nor

does age make me a doddering old fool who can't learn any longer. I am

older but I wouldn't label myself as elderly.I cannot, however, run and on
some days just taking the garbage out is an all day endeavor. But I have a
wealth of experience and reading beehind me and I continue to add to it. I
can only hope that people who are younger than I will look past the halting
of step and realize that I probably can structure a valid argument better
than i could when I was in my twenties.
So Chris and others just had a learning experience that should make them
stop and think the next time they make age assumptions that blanket all
older people. Marilyn

No I completely understand that. Me and my sister both use Windows 7,
but my elderly members of my family are using XP, simply because I didn't
want them to learn a whole new operating system as they are in their 40's!
They just want to turn on a computer, surf the web, turn off

again.
That's all. So thought why not go for XP as it's something they're used
to. They have both a desktop and a netbook running XP Home and they're
happy with it.

[Blind-Computing] Computer museum?

2010-09-01 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Chris and friends,
My favorite was Windows 98, first edition.

I still have it on my Gateway machine which I purchased in February 1999,
that makes it a 1998 machine!

It still works perfectly.
I only have JAWS 5.0 on it but the thing just keeps working perfectly, so it
has the honor of sitting under one side of my desk it is a full tower, and
on the other side is my Dell XP-Home with JAWS 11.

It has a set of Boston Acoustic speakers (3) and sounds better than the
sound system I have in my living room which cost me a pretty penny.

Yes, Windows 98 never had problems!

Hello all!
what was your favourite operating system in the history of computing? Also
what about software? My favourite operating system in the history of
computing is probably Windows 95 and I was using JAWS as my screen reader.
My favourite software was a product by PowerQuest called Second Chance. (I
wonder if anyone remembers having that preinstalled on their old
machines?) I certainly did and it was brilliant! The program is basically
System Restore but for data as well as system. What Second Chance did was
created checkpoints at regular intervals. You can then restore
individual files and folders, or even an entire system, to that particular
checkpoint. Checkpoint 1 was always the initial checkpoint either after
Second Chance was first installed or you have enabled a drive to be
monitored after it being disabled. One problem Second Chance did do was
corrupt the JAWS authorization keys that were used way back then. You
know, the ones that consisted of a special floppy disk? This is because,
as I soon found out, a hidden/system file jfw.cps was backed up by Second
Chance each time JAWS modified it. So of course when you restored an
entire system to an earlier checkpoint you lost authorization in the
process. But apart from that it was brilliant! How I wish they'd brought
it back to make it work for Windows 7!

Vert, it was later called Soft Vert!
Nice simple program!

But it was just the software to make the hardware work, and one could use

I remember you could purchase a Echo sound card from Radio Shack for about
$80 and then you could use a computer without sight!

Big difference now with JAWS almost a thousand dollars!

And those 5 and 1/2 inch floppy disks, that held 362 K of data!
LOL!

I can hardly believe it!

In 1985, I purchased an external hard drive, to go with my IBM PC.
It was 30 MB!

It cost $900
Can you believe that?

I have single cuts of music that are larger than 30 MB!
and my T-Drives cost about $79 each!

coolest thing. That was when you had two floppy drives and about 2 or
three buttons to turn the computer on. That thing is still probley
working today! I remember we took the computer apart in school to see
how the components worked. Remember that is when it took two folks to
carry it or maybe it is because we were so little. I just remember
playing that typing game where you hit a key before the ghost gets you.
And I remember all the commands just to make the computer function. You
had to do it in the exact order or you had to do it all over again. I
remember having to type win inter to make the windows come up. I
remember that if you wanted to spell check something, you had to put
another flopp disk in that had the dictionary or part of it to get the
correct word. I liked my old dos based commands. I was real
disappointed when you did not have the direct access to windows root
comands. I mean you can still have access but, dos was just so much
more efficient. Heather

Dear ROSEMARIE ,
Yes, I remember them, but I only used one at a typing Class for Blind

The first computer I really used for Work or home was the IBM PC.
Good old DOS was nice.
I used WordStar mostly on it, but WordPerfect also!

I used a 19 inch monitor with hardware to magnify the screen, from V-Tek
Wow, was all that stuff so primitive compared to today's stuff!
LOL!

Nice memories though, never, never thought about a crash, it just never

Hi, Alan,

Do you remember the Apple II E? That was the very first computer I learned
to operate. I remember there were two drives side by side. The first one
was
for your speech program like word rap or word talk which is what I used.
The

second drive was for the floppy disk that you stored information on. If I
remember correctly, control L turned the voice on and off. I almost bought
an Apple II E from someone but I didn't have quite enough money to pay for
it. I sure loved that machine though. It wasn't that hard to learn to
operate either.

I have been using JAWS 9, and I am going to install JAWS 11, so then I shall be
able to use I E 8 without any problems, as I understand it.

Can any please help her?

She writes:

Several people contacted me asking what the blue screen error says. And like I
said before, this is over my head. I am not that technical when it comes to
this type of issue. This is what the most recent one says:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this
is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any
windows update you might need. Run the driver varifier against any new (or
suspect drivers). If that doesn't reveal the corrupting driver, try enabling
special pool. These features are intended to catch the corruption at an earlier
point where the offending driver can be identified. If you need to use safe
mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select
advanced start up options and then select safe mode. If this is the first time
you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen
appears again, follow these steps.

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this
is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any

[Blind-Computing] Need Assistance in Learning Office 2003 have 2007

2010-07-28 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,
I am assigned to help a recently blinded lady, who is doing an office 2003
course, but has office 2007 on her personal pc, with the latest jaws.

Could someone perhaps refer us to a web site or tutorial, for differentiating
keystrokes between the two, especially, regarding MS WORD, outlook and Excel?

Alternatively, for ms office 2007 tutorials in combination with jaws?

I and this kind, charming Lady would very much appreciate it, because I'm not
familiar with office 2007.

Thank you very much.

With Best Regards,
Alan

[Blind-Computing] * Problem Resolved, F2 Key does now work

2010-07-27 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Eleni
Thank you very much also, I appreciate your very kind willingness to assist
me with that problem with the F2 key function all of a sudden not working.

You gave some great suggestions!

You did answer a question I have had for some time.
That is with the System Restore.

So then I understand, that this action will not affect your Data files that
were added to your computer between the time you go back to, and the time
you must use the System Restore?

That is great news, as I was always very worried about this, adding perhaps
100 important data files to my computer each and every day.

Thank you Eleni!

True, but I'm not referring to using an actual restore disk or
recovery disk. I only mean the regular system restore from within
Windows. This doesn't change any documents etc. and can be easily
undone. I personally think it's the easiest sollution if it ' some
kind of a software issue. However, be aware that this will undo any
updates or program installations that occured after the time to which
you restored the computer. For example, if you restore it to Friday
night but installed something new on Saturday, that will be undone.
So you'll either need to reinstall it, if the restore fixed the F2
issue, or restore back to today which would leave you exactly as you
are now.

If

necessary to see if there is a newer display driver for your display from

[Blind-Computing] Saving Email Messages

2010-07-27 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Francis,
I save each and everyone of my email messages, or most of them, I have to
save all those I receive regarding the Chess For the Blind organization I
am President of, and recently Temporary Tournament Director.
I have thousands and Thousands of email messages saved on my hard drive,
some of a sentimental nature, some of a Tutorial nature, going back as far
as perhaps 10 years, that I copied from my old machine onto my Terabyte
Drive.

I use Outlook Express, but I think when I used Outlook, it worked the same.

While highlighting a message you wish to save,
Go to your menus, to the File Option, arrow down to Save As and hit
enter, tab once or twice through the dialog box, and finally hit on Save!

I believe the email message by default is save in your My Documents
Folder!

Then simply select them from your My Documents and Cut and paste the
messages in a folder wherever you want to save them.

As I said I keep folders separating the email messages on my T-Drive!

It has worked for me for more than a Decade!

[Blind-Computing] Problem, F2 Key does not work

2010-07-26 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,
If I ever wanted to change the name of a file or folder I have always just

I have always done this!

This is so very strange and disconcerting for me, as I use this option a lot.

I am using XP-Home, JAWS 9.0.519 and I really could use some help.

What Happened?

I must have done something to disable this f2 key.

The strange thing, it does work for example on the icons on my Desk Top, so it
simply cannot just be the key itself.

Can some one please help me figure this out!

Hi Alan,

I really have no idea what's going on but I'll ask a few perhaps
silly questions. First, have you tried rebooting? Second, have you
tried disconnecting and then reconnecting the keyboard, or if it's a
usb one and you have multiple ports, have you tried connecting it to
another port. Third, have you tried cleaning the keyboard?
Sometimes, keys die or they just need to be cleaned. However, since
the key works for some things, I doubt it's that. Perhaps, you should
run an antivirus and/or antispyware program just to make sure
nothing's playing with your machine.

Good luck,
Eleni

[Blind-Computing] Problem, F2 Key does not work

2010-07-26 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Don ,
Yes, you are on to something there!
I can type in a new name, but I cannot read what I am typing when I type it,
so very tricky then!
You see, when our Chess group members and such send me their games I usually
have to assign the file a new name for storage purposes!
Exactly Don, JAWS is not echoing the highlighted file or folder name to
me!

Why did I not say that! Echoing!
But strangely enough for example in my Outlook Express, my folders I have
created do not act this way, in other words I do not have that problem with
them nor the icons on my desktop, just my regular folders and files.

Thanks Don!

Did you say that when you press the F2 key it just says, edit? If so,
have you attempted to type in a new name and press Enter? It might be
that it is allowing you to edit the filename, but is not properly echo the
new name as you type. This is still a problem, but a different kind of
problem and has different ways to look for a resolution.

That's actually how I do it with XP. I just hit applications, arrow
up to rename, hit enter, delete the current name and then change it.
But it sounds as if Alan has a much faster way. In any case, perhaps
there's a way to reformat the function to another key, say F3 so that
you can accomplish the same task with the same amount of ease. I have

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Problem, F2 Key does not work

Dear Friends,
If I ever wanted to change the name of a file or folder I have always
just highlighted it, hit my f2 key, and either deleted the current name
, or backed space the old name out and typed a new one in!

I have always done this!

All of a sudden, just now, it does not work!
I only hear Edit, and cannot even read the name of the file or folder
after I hit f2 on it.
This is so very strange and disconcerting for me, as I use this option
a lot.

I am using XP-Home, JAWS 9.0.519 and I really could use some help.

What Happened?

I must have done something to disable this f2 key.

The strange thing, it does work for example on the icons on my Desk
Top, so it simply cannot just be the key itself.

Can some one please help me figure this out!

Thanks very much!

Alan

[Blind-Computing] entering on links

2010-07-18 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Friends,
I have been following this thread, and finally decided I need to tell you
what works for me.

When wanting to use a link, I always first use the key combination JAWS
Key, (the 0 key on the numb pad) and hit the F7 key to first activate a
link, then tab and then Enter.

This always works for me!
Some links do not need to be activated, but as I said I have found that
many links do first need to be activated, and for those that do not, well,
the key combination I use before hitting Enter does not affect the link.

So then JAWS Key F7 then Tab and then Enter

I should have made myself more clear in that I wasn't referring to links in
an email program but rather links found in a website. Since I wrote to the
list yesterday, I have discovered that I can open the link by hitting the
right mouse key and selecting open; then if I use the left mouse key I can
open the link in question. My question then is what is wrong with my
settings such that I have to use the mouse buttons rather than the enter
key; no more than a month ago I could hit the enter key and things would
work just fine. This kind of stuff makes me hate computers.

Dear Friends,

Hi,

Whenever I use an external USB hard drive that I plug into a port, I
usually do a simple lookup or update a file or folder. In that case, I
can usually safely remove the hard drive without any problems.

However, when I do a lot of activities like deleting folders or files,
adding new folders and files etc., I cannot safely remove the hard drive
from the USB port no matter how many times I try.

I found that the only way to do so is to do a restart of my computer and
when the system is up , I can always safely remove the hard drive. It
appears to me that some software is holding on to that drive and will
not release it?

Is there something else that I can do without restarting my computer
that can be done more quickly and efficiently?

I am using XP with all the updates and the latest version of Jaws 11.

I appreciate any advice that will make it easier to do maintenance on my
external hard drives. By the way, this happens to any external USB hard
drive on different USD ports whether it is one always attached but with
a power off and on switch and my passport external hard drive with no
power switch.

Thanks in advance.

Lennie

That's how I do it. Just press enter on that and it gives you a list of
the devices to stop, just select the one and press spacebar to stop that
device, then it will tell you it's safe to remove it, then close out that
window.

No need to reboot or shut down the computer.

[Blind-Computing] A strange Word problem

2010-06-15 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Cliff,
This has happened to me many times in the past!
I am using XP-Home and Microsoft products, Word, Excel, Access 2003.

I have found if I have been working in a Folder in one of my T-Drives, and
have had documents open in that folder, then open a new Word doc file and
save it, it will go to the folder where I have been working.

This only happens till I open a folder from My Documents then all is well
again, and my new documents will be saved in My Documents

The way around this is now when I have been working in a folder on one of my
T-Drives, and save a new document, I type the file name using the prefix:
C:\documents and settings\alan dicey\my documents\(then your file name)

Of course in your case you would type your name where Alan Dicey is.

Your file will then be saved in your My Documents, and after that all
subsequent files will be saved there till perhaps you open a file in another
folder somewhere on your machine.

At least this works for me.

[Blind-Computing] Problem: Everything says Selected!

2010-06-13 Thread Alan Dicey

Hello Friends,
I have been putting up with this problem for some months now, perhaps longer
than that.
The only way I know how to resolve it when it happens is to simply kill my
computer, at the power supply.

And restart the computer.

Here is what happens.

I will be in my Outlook Express, and perhaps do something like a bad
keystroke or something, I am not sure, all of a sudden, when I arrow up or
down through my messages, everything says: Selected!

And even when I leave Outlook Express, go to my Documents, or any folder,
and arrow up or down, JAWS still says Selected!

Even when I go to a Word doc file, still every line I arrow up or down to
will say Selected!

Anyone have any ideas what causes this save for some strange key stroke
command I might accidentally hit, or such?
And how can I get the situation corrected, besides what I am doing killing
the power to my computer and restarting it?

I do not think that is good for one's computer, but the only solution I have
found so far to get rid of the problem.

This might happen once a week or so!

Thanks for any assistance.
I hope I explained the situation clearly enough.

With Best Regards,
Alan

[Blind-Computing] Problem: Everything says Selected!

2010-06-13 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Scorpio,
I think you are absolutely correct, I suspected it was some kind of hot key
combination command, working as a Toggle but could not think of what I
might have been hitting!

I will try exactly what you suggested.

Yes, in the past I did solve the problem by rebooting, but that has always
seem to be very inconvenient, right in the middle of something, if you know
what I mean.

Thanks Scorpio !

Hello Alan,

What I suspect is happening is that you may have inadvertently pressed and
locked the left mouse button by mistake.

This would happen when you accidently go to press a say line command with
the insert up arrow on the number pad, and instead of hitting the number
8,

you may have pressed the slash, which is the key directly above the number
8.

To unlock it, you simply have to press the keystroke of insert+slash
again,

and it will unlock the cursor.

Alternatively, if this is not the problem you're having, then it may help
to

re-start your system, which should fix the problem.

Scorpio

I have found that if you open the Control Panel and go to the sounds and
audio tab you can adjust some of the options for the microphone to work.
Usually, the microphone will work when you change the recording setting and
the speaker settings. When you actually open Skype you should go to the
Audio settings and you might also have to change some of the settings
there. For example, the setting on the audio tab might be a Windows setting
when you should use the Media recording setting. If you know the brand of
microphone you have, you should change the settings in the control panel
and the Skype audio tab to the setting on your microphone.

[Blind-Computing] Looking for Yahoogroups Tutorial

2010-04-16 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,
I just set up, with the help of a friend, a Yahoogroups list for our
United States Braille Chess Association.
We are leaving the Topica groups!
It was not easy negotiating the yahoogroups pages to set up the group, nor
do I see it easy using JAWS to maintain.

I put some moderators in charge of course, but how can I and they learn more
about yahoogroups management?

Has anyone seen any tutorials or such. We would even be willing to pay for
them.

[Blind-Computing] Need Yahoogroups Tutorial

2010-03-25 Thread Alan Dicey
Dear Friends,
I have found Setting up a yahoogroups list very very difficult!
That is, as a Blind person using JAWS!

I have succeeded in doing so with the assistance of a couple of Blind friends,
in several sessions over the telephone, long sessions, taking a lot of their
time and effort!
But I would like to know how to do this myself, in case I want to start up
another yahoogroup.

Does anyone know where I might find a tutorial that will assist me?

Thank you so much for any information that will lead me in the right direction.

[Blind-Computing] HP Keyboard Question

2010-03-22 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Trish,
John is absolutely correct!

I do not allow any food, nor liquid of any kind near my desk, not even in my
computer room!

Just a rule!
Never have, and never will!

That is why my keyboard from my 1998 Gateway still works perfectly!

And you also might as well be told, tiny particles of food can also be
sucked into your CPU by the intake fans!

This does not do your computer any good that is for sure!
LOL!

Patricia,
If this is the original keyboard that came with your HP, I wouldn't try
reassigning any of those keys. Alternatively, I suggest either masking
them or trying to ignore them. On my HP , there is a Mute which turns
off all sound from the sound card. That is a toggle switch so if you hit
it again, it will turn the sound back on again. I'm not sure that was
the key you hit but it sounds like it.
Mark has an excellent idea with the flexible keyboard cover. But it does
take some getting used to and you have to get one that has the same
format as your keyboard. That isn't as easy as it sounds.
Finally, there are few things which are more damaging or deadly to these
modern keyboards than crumbs and salt. Salt can and often will react
with the tiny metal contacts and render the keyboard inoperative,
eventually. I guess the problem begs one essential question, Patricia.
Which is more important to you, your computer or your snacks?

(wicked grin)
Seriously, you have to be more careful or you will definitely end up
buying another keyboard very shortly.
There are tiny contacts in these boards which would stop work entirely
because of one single pretzel crumb. No Patricia, I'm not kidding.
Getting food or Heaven forbid liquid onto one of our keyboards would
result in me having to chastise one of our employees.

Hi Patricia,
You might try reassigning the key under JAWS. Its worth a try any
way.
What I would really suggest is buying a flexible keyboard cover.
One just leaves it on the keyboard and types right through it. It
protects against crumbs, and beverages being spilt on the keyboard. I
use a cover like this all the time.

God bless,
Mark

[Blind-Computing] How long can a file name be?

2010-03-19 Thread Alan Dicey
Hello Friends,
I cannot believe I do not know this, but I received an error message the other
day when I tried to save a file with a rather long file name!

Can some kind person tell me, in Windows XP, how many characters a file name
can be?

And while you are at it, with this question in mind, is there any difference
with XP, Vista, or Windows 7?

Thanks!

[Blind-Computing] How Does A Computer Die?

2010-03-18 Thread Alan Dicey

Dear Friends,
Well, I have had a Gateway full tower computer that I purchased in February
of 1999.
It is then really then an 1998 machine and indeed still running Windows 98
First Edition!
It came with a 6 ½ GB hard Drive, but after a couple of years, I added a
30 GB hard Drive.

It is still working perfectly!
LOL!

Although I do not use it very much any more as I have on the same desk my
Dell XP-Home with a 80 GB Drive and two (2) external Seagate T-Drives
connected that I purchased in 2007!

But inbetween these two purchases, I had a Dell full tower that I purchased
in 2004 that only lasted three years!

The Hard Disk died, and the Mother board was also corrupted!

Then One never really knows what the Life expectancy of a computer might
be!

But surely always make sure the fans are working.
A simple way to do this is either listen for them, or put your hand in the
front of your computer and feel for the air which is so slightly being
sucked into the case by the fans.

There are usually more than one fan.

With Best Regards,
Alan

Keep things backed up. Ten years is a long time for hard drives to be
spinning. Keep an eye out for longer boot times, longer times accessing
files and occasional file access errors.

[Blind-Computing] HP Keyboard Question

Dear Trish,
I have one of those keyboards on my second computer, and yes I disabled the
Special Additional Function Keys
By going into the Add / Remove programs section of my Control panel, and
simply deleting the program that makes them function!

I do not remember what your HP keyboard calls the program, but you will know
it when you see it!
