Just FYI, the 68 fan shroud is a year specific item. It has 3 bolt holes to hold it to the radiator top plate instead of 2 like the 69-72's. As long as you have the same top plate, get the shroud for the engine in the car, not what radiator is in it. Big blocks are 2 inches longer than a small block which brings the fan closer to the radiator. If you put a big block shroud on a small block car, the fan will not sit in the shroud where it needs to be making it ineffective.Tom

I am looking for some original style steel wheels to fit my car. They are 14x5 with 3.5 inch back spacing. The tough part is they must have the groove in the wheel to clear the caliper. I don't care about codes or dates. If it helps, the code on my original spare is XD. This code shows up no where in any book that I have found. It may be a 68 only, wheel. If anyone has any wheels that fit this description let me know. I am starting to get desperate. Thanks Scott HillJoin Excite! - http://www.excite.comThe most personalized portal on the Web!

RE: [Chevelle-list] 68-69 hood insulation falls out

2005-08-01 Thread Scott Somers

I picked up some insulation at a Home Depot that was 3/4 thick, fairly
rigid, and the good part- almost a chrome, reflective finish on one side. I
cut it a little larger than the openings on the hood ( a 69 goodmark, good
year, good heavens, whatever) high scoop on my 68) and pushed it in. It
was stiff enough to stay in place without help. Now, I never drove
the car more than 10 or 15 miles at a time so I don't know what heat would
do over time. Cleaned up easy and was kinda car showey...if that's a word.
If you need, I can shoot a picture to ya.

I actually think it would be funny to have chicken wire. I should be able to
get some somewhere around here. Thanks for the offer though.

I actually have a second set now because one of the pieces from the first
set got damaged. I'm wondering if there is any advantage to stacking them so
that I can glue it all to the underside of the hood in the center. That
would also solve everything. Right now it seems like there is too much space
between the frame and the sheet metal to glue one layer of the insulation
directly to the underside of the sheet metal.

John, you can only use chicken wire if it is held in place with baling wire.

My tranny guy told me
that my 4L60 ( 700R4 ) would work OK on my 468 but at 600hp it would granade if
I pushed it a few too many times at a stoplight. My tires weren't sticky
so they took the strain off the tranny and just caught fire a
lot.Had they grabbed, I might have been pulling tranny parts from my
backside. Seems anything after 450 hp gets iffy on a stock or mildly
beefed box. But with 4:10's I did like the lockup overdrive.
Sounded strange but it felt and sounded like a 5 speed automatic.
There are tranny guys likePhoenix or Bow Tiethat can build them to
take 600+ for a few thou.or less - no E so no computer. Had I
kept my '68, Santa would have delivered a new box this year ( trade in my 4L60
if it was still in one piece). But alas..

[Chevelle-list] 1968 on EBAY

2005-05-26 Thread Scott Somers

It ain't for show but the person that was interested in how I mounted the
amp and EQT's in my '68, it's on ebaymotors at

item number 4551565286

You might also be able to see the tweeter location for the fron Focals. No
fancy mounting in this car but they throw a nice image and that's what it's
about. The 6.5 Focals really need to be clipped at 80 or so with the under
80 going to subs ( go JL Audio unless ya wanna dump a ton on Focal subs).
No rear fill speakers..just let volume set the rear fill effect - just like
in a concert. Get power to go over the sound of the motor and pipes. Don't
mess with center channels. They were a headache in the 90's and still would
be. Get a lot of GOOD CLEAN power, aim the speakers for good stage, cut off
with good sloping for your system and rock on.

By the way, someone will get a great deal on the '68. I put 22K in it last
year in about 5 months after I bought it for a lot last April. Still
cheaper than my ex wife...and more fun as well.

Zoops has a lot of stuff but I ended up trashing a lot of money in the
buildup of my Gen 6 468 with a long pump trying to stay with a fancy V belt
rig and finally had to switch over to a serp. Because I wanted to send my
kid to college, I was trying not to dump the rather serious bucks on the
serp but go with v-belt. Wasn't gonna happen. Caved in to my engine builder
who was getting major po'ed with the Zoop thing ( as well as a 750 Demon
that shot gas straight in the air about half the time ) and went the zoop's
serp route and things went better ( the old holley double cured the fountain
effect - it was kinda pretty but not practical ). Guess college is out for
the kid but I told him that there seems to be a future in pulley
manufacturing. The correct align feature did save our butt. The car next
to mine went with the other brand serp system from the get go and it was a
walk in the park. He's was a drummer for a major rock band and said college
was not a major issue with him - but he a nice pulley setup nonetheless that
complimented orange spiked hair with a bald spot in the back. But hey, he
is into hot rods so he's ok in my book. I'm still gonna stay with the Roy
Orbison
stuff.

Dan,
Try Summit, pn SUM-340105. This is a GM Type 2 polished aluminum pump
that uses a remote reservoir and hence takes very little room at the
pump. I just installed one on my '68/454 and it works and looks great.
I used a Zoops polished aluminum bracket and reservoir and the pump
mounts low on the driver side. If you are running a stock pump this
should work just fine.

Thanks but no. Still got mine - somewhere -
but I think my next " thing " might be a 32 Roadster. No modern nothing -
just engine, body, frame, and wheels. Less to screw with.
Maybe a T-bucket. One of my early ( late 50's early 60's or so ) was
driving a bucket listening to the Walk Don't Run by the Ventures. Gotta do
that someday.

Glad to help. Holler if you need me. I really had fun in the car audio
competition world in the 90's but like NHRA in the 60's vs now it is now
longer do it yourself but how much money you want to spend. ( I read that
Kenny Bernstein's - or was it John's Force's - crew chief's salary several
years ago was $500,000 ) I quit competing in car audio when I saw a 17 year
old kid and his parents who had just flown in from out of the state, came to
a IASCA regional meet to take delivery of his all pro-built comp car with an
unreal sound system in it, pull the car into the Novice line and blew
everyone away. He had not done a thing on his own. 100% Check Car. Was
time to find a new hobby. Still enjoy the super high end car audio but just
to enjoy. Neon and motorized amp racks never really helped the sound
anyway.

But the best way to hear Hendrix over Flowmaster Super 40's is about 1,000+
legal clean watts, really good speakers in good enclosures and a nice
stretch of road.

Kick panels are the best without getting into radical floor panel
modifications ( which are way cool ) because of equalization of the
sound path - critical stuff . When speakers and the electronics are
dialed in and you play a high quality recording and close your eyes (
obviously while not driving ) it is just plain spooky. You can see
the placement of all the members of the band. Same thing with higher
end home audio. The location of the speakers disappear.

I played with waveguides ( horns ) in the mid 90's but they are wierd and
very tricky. Stay with kicks if possible and use good speakers from
good companies like Focal ( about $400 per pair, Quart, and others. It
sound funny but there is what we called an east coast sound - crisp and
detailed ( Quart ) and a west coast sound - warmer ( Focal) . Just go
with what sounds good to you BUT don't push too much bass through smaller
speakers and get the best amp you can reasonably afford. ( Tube and
hybrid tube amps were fun too but harmonics were a bear..not sure that
you can still even get hem ) Too little power is not good for speakers.
Crappy amp will trash good speakers. I was really onto Hendrix but
distortion is distortion ( you may quote me on that )

If you have good kick panel systems made and can seal and use the chamber
behind them you got a good start to some nice midbass. Mine were
actually built into the area behine the kickpanels and teh panels acted
like speaker covers. Aim the tweeter and if possible the mid range at
the dome light. If ya got the desire a coaxial, a 5 1/4 ( which is more
musical than a 6 1/2 but won't carry the midbass as well - size matters)
coaxial (tilted) as close to the junction of the kickpanel and the floor
and a 6 1/2 or 7 in the door as far forward as possible can easily
get you down to 65hz and then let the subs take over. The human ear
cannot tell the direction of true low bass because the wave length is so
long but it can find direction of the higher frequency rattle that bad
mounting of a speaker or panel flop can produce.

On my Chevelle, I was taking a lot simplier for now and change it
later approach - no comp audio show point stuff this time - car audio is
way over the top now, check out anything by the Fishman. I'll find a
picture. But, like the engine, the best stuff can't be seen. I mounted
the amp, crossovers ( passive on this car) and EQT's on a panel on the
back wall. Not high end at all but I just wanted some sounds and was
going to maybe wierd it out later this year. No purple neon inside the
amp racks this time. Oh, well, them was the 90's.

Did I mention Dynamat. If you can't get to an area to mat it, pink
panther stuff shoved in will deaden it pretty good too. My comp car
sounded like a tomb. At one point the front windows would not roll down
because of the insulation but I changed my mind, pulled the panther stuff
and did a couple more layers of Dynamat ( I was getting a discount by
then ) I beefed up the package tray with MDF and more dynamat. Thing
did NOT rattle. Actually, that car did not rattle.

Have a ball - it can be a cool side hobby.

2005-05-06 Thread Scott Somers
Hey Aaron,
If you want to email me off list I'll send a couple of pictures on what I
was doing on my 68 when I decided to sell it. In the 90's I competed a car
in IASCA and USAC car audio competition - and even won - a trunk full of
electronics but it was fun. In my 55 Chevy and now the '68 Chevelle, I used
a upper end Alpine head, Audio Control EQT ( 2) comp equalizers, modified,
a J.L.Audio amp and Focal component speakers with Focal comp crossovers.
Little trick - Canare pro audio ( recording studio ) interconnects and
speaker cable - killer stuff and cheap to boot. And lotsa Dynamat ( 3
pipes and Flowmaster Super 40's on a 468 ain't the best for car audio but ya
work with what ya got). I was then gonna have a J.L 12 in each side of the
trunk aimed sligtly back but decided to sell the car instead. I was and am
a soundstage and image freak, as opposed to a thumper and I was gonna pull
the new 6x9 Focals back out in favor of subs only in the rear. Never went
to a concert where speakers were in the back anyway. If you gotta run rear
speakers look at having them clipped at 200-300 hz or less. Better yet run
real good stuff in the front - kickpanels is the best for imaging - at least
put the tweeter there - aimed at the dome light. 6 1/2 stuff is minimal
for decent midbase. I ran 8 DynaAudio mid bass in the doors of my 90's
comp car with Quart comp 5 1/4 and tweeter (seperates) where the floor and
the kickpanel met and 2 12 subs in the facing forward.. Each speaker (8
total) had it's own dedicated or 1/2 amp with Rane pro audio crossovers and
eq's splitting the signal. What an image and soundstage. Kinda over the
top but talk radio was never better. Fried a couple of alternators as well.
Some one, I think Mickey Thompson, said speed cost money, how fast do you
want to go. same thing applied to audio - how good do you want it to sound.
DYNAMAT and deaden the car or it will bass rattle and that is an enemy of
accurate bass reproduction and imaging.

Does anyone have any pictures of custom speaker boxes for the 6x9's in
the back of a 1970 chevelle? Also any pictures of a full system setup
with where they mounted an AMP and or subs in the trunk?
Another question i have is what have you guys done for the back package
tray of the 1970 chevelle? do you just up and buy the one out of the
catalogs or does anyone know of some custom ones that are a little
better than the standard cardboard ones?

I got excited about gas cost until I did some math. If gas went from 1.80
to 2.20 per gallon and I got only, for easy math, 10mpg, that's only $.04
increase per mile. On a 5,000 mile trip, which is some serious saddle time

on a run like that would not make me panic too bad. Lot of ways to make

It's not as heavy or as expensive as the Dynamat, but it made a very
noticeable difference in the amount of heat noise coming into the car.
I used 1 sheet (4 x 6 ft) under the carpet from the firewall to under the

original soundproofing (tar paper and padding) saw some nice shiny
(aluminum) backed stuff being used on one of the Car shows the other
night.
Looking to limit that road noise sound. Does any one have a
recommendation
or should I just go with the new stuff listed in many of the after market
catalogues. I have some stiff poly foam (packing type material) that I
was
planning on using under the dash, got some 3m Glue the other day any word
on
that idea good or bad. It looks like it would be better then the stuff
that
was crumbling apart when I removed the dash that looked like some kind of
fiber board gone bad.

[Chevelle-list] If you're looking for a 68

2005-04-12 Thread Scott Somers

Time to move on to another toy. If someone is
looking for a good one, my '68 with a new 468 genVI is listed for sale by a
local ( Dallas) shop that sells the older cars.Go to www.fast440.com and look for the blue
Chevelle. Price is good since I put close to 40 in it between April
whenIgot it andOctober. Needs A/C hoses to the new
compressor. It was just easier to tell the engine builder to just get a
new one of whatever it needed.

Don't it figure...get it in April - start of the
season - give it to my wrench for a new motor and suspension and brakes
upgrades, get it back in October when the season id pretty much done, put it up
and sell it inApril. I don't think I really want to know what those
easy, around my part of town, 300 miles or so are going to cost me net.
What a hobby!

Best regards to you all. I'm gonna stay on
the list in the background. Always interesting things.

Can they build stainless exhaust systems? I've

I think the 40's were around $250 installedon
the existing tubingon the 396 and then later ( 100 miles) after the
468 was put inthey repiped it all the way backwith 3" tube from the
new headers, replumbed up the electric cut-outs portion, reused the still new
40's andtook it back to therear bumper ( over the rear end with 3"
is a hoot)...seems that tab was in the $250 to $300 range.The
468 sure liked the 3"better than the
2 1/4" straws. They even opened up the 40's
inlet and outlet to flow the 3". Some might not do that as it took an
extra 2 minutes.

They did a good job.Whatever my
next hot rod is they will surely do the intestional work on it as well.

2005-03-24 Thread Scott Somers
Thanks for the feedback. Kinda hate to see it go. The vette dealer asked
how I liked the 300 horses in the vette. He looked surprised when I told
him it was a letdown after 600 in the Chevelle. Had only put about 300 easy
miles on the Gen6 and it wanted to be turned loose. Guess I should have.
I'm kinda at the point where it's not what ya do but how ya look while
you're doing it so I will probably mild 350 crate the next ride and just
profile. Love Mercs with mail box slot windows. Actually as long as its
old and I could have not bought one new at the time ( I'm 58 so I could have
bought a Chevelle new.) then I'm into it. Might just get another Chevelle.
There is one around the corner that is very very slick - 66 with custom
frame LS1, really pro touring and expensive. Very sweet with the right look
but 50 large generates a large sucking sound in my accounts. But I think
the 50 is fishing. They are into high buck cars and looking for a whale.

I know this ain't Chevelle related, but this money
could buy a very cool Chevelle ( nice tie back, huh)
This is really off the charts. It would make
an interesting reality show. All on a word of a construction site
supervisor.

The current winning bidder has spent aTOTAL
of $78.46for the last 6 purchases including $24 for tupperware. And
he's sitting on $360k. Guess you can really savemoney buying
tupperware on line.I sure as hell hope he wants to buy a
Chevelle. For $360K, I'll even wash and deliver it. With a
tank og gas. And sincemy company sells U.S. flags, I'll throw
in a few. There has got to be atwist to thisor I am really
missing something.

And according to that other web site, if this is
from a chrime scene, why hasn't the FBI, CIA, DEA, FTC, CBS, UPS, CNN, FOB,
CODor any other group with cool initials swooped in on this yet.

Don’t get me wrong, I have sympathy for the seller’s
bout with cancer, but there seems to be questions about (1) The ‘authenticity’
of the flag itself. The seller refused to return the ‘letter of authenticity’
to the writer who was rebuked by the construction company for writing it on a
company letterhead. (2) The legality of selling debris from a crime
  scene.

This flag was flying atop a civilian contractor’s
construction crane, not the Pentagon, so it may be considered private property
of the construction company, but even so it was removed from a crime
  scene.

Since he's turned down offers of $100,000 it'll be

Interestin thing is to look at the history of the
bidders. The top ones with bids of $50,000 plus have a history of buying
stuff for under $100. This is rather serious cash outflow. Looks

Anybody is the Dallas area interested in a very
good deal on a 68 fully cloned up to SS with a very flashy, pro-built and very
streetable 468 Gen 6 Bowtie ( about 200 miles on it since built late last year )
, beefed 4L60 and all the trimmings.Very solid, cool and a bunch of new
stuff on it, in it and under it. Holler offgroup to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for pictures and
details. Got a new wife and change of plans. Make someone a
very sweet deal ( but not a firesale steal. Ain't a money thing just

Re: [Chevelle-list] Need new Carb

2005-01-13 Thread Scott Somers
We just dropped a 468 Gen 6 in my '68 to replace the 396 that was tired. I
had picked up the '68 in April, kinda on a whim. I am getting thank you
notes from American Express as a result of the work that has been done on
it since then. The 468 has KB pistons of Carrillo (sp) rods, a Comp roller
cam/rocker set up, very reworked heads and an AirGap. Followed the lead and
put a 850 Demon on it with an electric fuel pump ( Gen6's don't have
provisions for a fuel pump ) and during half the time of set up and testing
the engine, the Demon shot gas straight up into the air. Kinda pretty but
probably not real cool. Kinda reminded me of Belligio ( sp again ) in Vegas
cept it did not go with the music. Now, I hear Demons are very good but
somehow I did not trust it after that. We pulled the relatively new but not
as pretty Holley 750 double off the 396, put it on the 468 and the fountain
action stopped. Works great. For my driving the 750 is just fine.
Although the engine is very strong, and it's a 4:10 the 4L60 will have its
limitations on acceptable street work. Plus Dallas police are kinda
unforgiving on stoplight burnouts and I don't have stickies anyway.

The over carb thing happened on my '55 Chevy. Mild cammed 350 4 speed with
a Edlebrock 750 and it bogged at every shift. Dropped to a 650 Edlebrock
and it ran a LOT better. My kid even commented that it seemed that i
learned to drive the 4 speed smoothly without the lunges as a result of
power shifting to avoid the boggs. The out of the box 650 Edlebrock
performed just fine.

Sure wanted to go with the Demon on the Chevelle but keeping gas in the
engine rather than on the engine seemed like a better option. I'm sure that
we could have gotten the floats to work right ( we tried several times ) but
the trust was gone.A 73 vette with a pretty hot 383 was also being
played with in the next bay and when another new Demon ( 750) was put on it,
it fountained a couple of times and then settled down.

Just some thoughts. Unless I go with Street Performance injection, I'll
stick with the Holley. My tax accountant tells me that my Uncle in
Washington wants for money so for now I'll stick with the carb route but
injection is screaming at me. Almost traded the Chevelle for a chopped 51
merc sled last week but think I'll wait for another TRI-5. Lost the 55 in a
divorce this year.

Hi guys: I currently have a Holley 650 DP which is probably
almost as old as my 65. Lotsa problems, won't adjust, etc.
Engine is a .40 over 327, alum heads, headers, Comp Cams 272 Xtreme, 10.3
compression, M-20 4 speed and a 3.73 12 bolt posi. A fair estimate is about
400HP at the flywheel. The car is mostly show and alway street driven
during the season May to November. I do like to take it to the dragstrip a
few times or more each summer. What Carb to buy? A new Holley, a Demon,
Holley Avenger? The BG people say go with a Mighty Demon 650. I was
thinking a 750. The old Holley 650 is chugging like its starving for more
gas at higher rpm's. Anyone have experiences pro or con they'd like to
share. Any all info advice will be greatly appreciated. This is how I
learn stuff. There's so much knowledge on this list. I just like to tap
into it once in a while. Always saves alot of time $$ down the road.
Thanks Everyone.

Re: [Chevelle-list] vented fuel cap

2005-01-04 Thread Scott Somers

I kinda lay in the weeds and read the goodies but I guess I need to ask as
well about the vented cap deal but on a 68 Chevelle. If it matters there is
an electric fuel pump for the Holley carbed 468 Gen VI Bowtie. Not having
problems with it - except gas goes through it like flushing a toilet - but I
might as well have the right one when it comes to function not
historical correctness.

Happy new year to all from those of us in the weeds

Re: [Chevelle-list] vented fuel cap

2005-01-04 Thread Scott Somers

Thanks Bill, that would definitely be a cool thing to know. I will
certainly follow you with the fix. Right now I tend to spend more time
stomping on the gas rather than the brakes but I'm sure that the laws of
averages ( and probability) might address that ratio some day. Just had
new 3 pipes and flowmasters behind hookers put in. Now the functionality
of the stuff in and stuff out relationship seems a little more complete but
shore is louder. Gotta retune the Holley ( miss the Demon but we could not
keep it from doing a geyser when it felt like it so we sent it back. ) For
my driving ( it's sometimes not what ya do, it's how ya look while you're
doing it) the 750 is ok for now. I find that I get to the speed limit quite
nicelyand then go some more.

Thanks in advance for the help and the info.

Scott

Hope you don't itch too much from those weeds. :-)) The 68 cars have a
fuel tank vent in the top front of the tank, so the gas cap doesn't need
to
be vented. Something that you may have noticed is that when your car is
full of gas you get on the brakes hard, gas flows out of the vent hoses
and can drip on the right exhaust pipe. I'm going to try to figure out a
way to prevent this, when I do, ya'll will be the second to know.

Ken,

You might check with the guys at Vintage Air in San
Antonio. Lot of serious cars around there and I am sure they will know a
good team of wrench and stitch people. There are also some good
shops in Austin. Jimmie Vaughn ( Stevie Ray's brother) hashad
some very nice customs made in that area.

My 68 that I picked up after I lost my 55 in a
divorce this yeargotits new 468 Gen VI put in and is finally on the
road - it really hates speed limits but we are trying to cope.
The motor was built as a blower motor for a drag
boat but the owner died and the motor sat unfinished. Never fired. We
pulled the blower, reworked the seriously ported heads for a little higher
compression, recammed it with a Comp riller and here we
go.Tightened upa 4L60( yeah, we're waiting to see how
long that will last).

Now for re-paint, little time in the seat and then
maybe look for a trade ( sorry but my heart's still with the Tri-Fives or 59-62
Impala.)

Saw a '70 S/S with 17" wheels this weekend at
the KKOA meeting in Denison Texas - love those lead sleds. 15's
lookvery cool but forthe time beingand for the retro look I
think I'll stay with the new 15" Crager SS's that were on it when I got it
earlier this year.

[Chevelle-list] For sale - New polished b/b long water pump

2004-08-26 Thread Scott Somers

Looks like I have abrand new - yes, brand new as inbolted
on but NOT used - Edlebrock big block polished aluminum long water pump
for sale. Seems that my new Zoop big block, long water pump billet bracket
pulley system for V belts might have a problem with finding a long v belt and
even then watching it flap ( and throw at higher RPM). Looks like I have to bite
the bullet ( again ) and go surp so I will need a reverse big block polished
aluminum long water pump.
My 68 is now sitting with a strong motor - computer says just shy of 600 hp (
wonder how long the 700R4 will live harmoniously with that). Never run GenVI
marine 468 blower motor without the blower but reworked heads to get compression
to 9.5. Very solid bottom end with comp roller upper stuff. Should be afun
cruiser with bad gas mileage. But gas mileage is not what got me into this hobby
anyway.
Looking for a name for the car. Started to call it " ExWife " cause I seem to
be putting a lot of money into it without gettingany pleasure but decided
to go another direction.Might call it "Mistress" in hopes that with
enough money thown her way, pleasure will soon be forth
coming.
Might also have a pretty new 750 holley. Seems a new 850 Road demon on a
polished Air Gap was prettier. I'm thinking the cigarette lighter might make it
through the process without changing it 4 or 5 times. Least I won't have to
rebuy that 3 or 4 times. What the hell, it's still cheaper than golf.
Contact me off line I your interested in the NEW pump.
By the way, a plug and thanks to Vintage Air. My alsobrand
newpolishedA/Ccompressor that just got bolted on has v
belts. Gotta go surp. They said just send it back and they will
switch over to surp. Now that's customer service. They really helped me
onsome things on my ' 55Chev.last year and have come through
again. My open compliments.

Re: [Chevelle-list] carb air intake system

Thanks, I will check into both of these. I'm gonna need it. I also find
repro under bumper air horns as replacements on the W-30 olds on ebay
(2486020815). My wrench really wants an outside air source for that engine.
One of the challenges is getting outside air without taking out the cars
high beams for a air intake. Been considering that as well. Had a guy
yesterday tell my that I'm fixing to have an interesting hood clearance
issue with the 468 engine, Edlebrock air gap manifold, Holley 750 and a 3
KN set with the Xtreme top. Edlebrock says the air gap is only 5/8 taller
than the Performer R-2, P-2 ( whatever ) that was on the 396 so I guess we
will wait and see. Got a spare hood hanging on the wall but I'm trying to
to scoop it. If I do the W-30 thang I just need to get the ram air air
cleaner housing and no hood repaining is needed. Still should go the Street
and Performance injection system and just forget it. Bet I have one on
there by Christmas anyway.
And a 4L60E or better if the 700r4 don't make it like some predict.
Especially if my wrench borrows the car some weekend for a 1/4 mile test
drive. If it has a new tranny in it on teh following morning I'll know the
other one bought the farm.

Anyway, as always, thanks to you for the help. I'll keep you posted.

[Chevelle-list] It goed, then stopped - now it goes again (I think)

2004-07-07 Thread Scott Somers
It's going again...at least for now.

Thanks to all for the help.

I'm not sure if this was THE problem, but it was a problem. To you guys
that know a lot more about this than I do, do think this was it or should I
continue on with the autopsy. Her's what happened:

While looking at the firewall plug for looseness ( it was tight), I
remembered from my question about the weak lights ( relays came in to fix
that this weekend ), it appears that the infamous horn relay is a major
intersection in a Chevelle's electrical life contentment. So, I was looking
around it for any loose or disconnected wires and, lo and behold, one of the
screws that held several wire to one of the relay lugs was very loose
allowing the wire lugs to wiggle - a lot. Now I am assuming that electrical
connections and wiggle are not coexisting terms and can lead in cases to
heat and bad connections. I tightened the screw up, several complete turns,
and the car ran just fine.

Do ya think that this was the cause - not full voltage to all the operating
systems - or just an oh,by the way type thing and the culprit is still
there - hiding for me to be out on the road - happy and cruisin and then pop
and it coasts to a stopagain.

Thanks again for your help. Seems I'm gonna owe a lot of people a beer at a
Chevelle get together some day. Fine by me.

Best regards to all

I had planned on doing this tonight. Just for safety sake, I have a new
relay coming in tomorrow. When the engine gets jerked in August for a new
roller cam, roller rockers, converter, zoops brackets and any other neat
stuff my wrench talks me into ( still saying no on the blower- at least for
now), we are gonna get a little relay crazy and redo some things with a
custom aluminum cover plate covering that neat open area where the horn
relay is.

Thanks again to all for the advice - and party suggestion.

Scott, sounds like you found the problem.
I'd suggest disconnecting the battery, and wire brushing the terminals and
connection on relay so they're clean and reassemble.
As you said, and maybe it wasn't pointed out clearly earlier, the horn
relay serves as a junction block for the main power wires so it's a good
place to check.
Oddly enough in checking Chevy's diagram, they call it a
horn relay and junction block !

It's always seemed that if anything was going to stop my first 64 it was
going to be something electrical.

[Chevelle-list] Help- It goed, then stopped

2004-07-06 Thread Scott Somers
Since I have only been a Chevelle owner since my divorce in April ( she got
the '55 Chevy) I am not that familiar with the operations of the newer
cars. I have a 68 SS396 ( cloned but it's still a Chevelle and fun to
drive)

It has been in the shop a lot of the time for more upgrades - front end,
rear end stuff, discs, stereo system, dual electric fans and so on. The
engine has about 2000 miles on the rebuild but we're fixing to pull it for a
Comp roller cam, roller rockers, new converter on the 700R4, new bracket
system, a new Air Gap manafold in the Permastar finish, yada, yada. It
seems to be in good shape. My wrench is a serious go fast engine builder
and feels the car is strong.

Here's the problem.

left the house on Monday to go for a spin. About 4 miles from the house,
running fine, then quit. A pop then all, I mean all, electrical went
away. While waiting for the flatbed, I checked the battery ( a 2 month old
Optima) and it registered 12.53. Before the flatbed got there, I tried
again to start it and it fired right up, ran for 15 seconds and stopped -
again no electric to anywhere. Full power at the battery but none anywhere
else. Actually a little, enough to barely power the inside lights for just
a second and then dead.

Walked out this morning and the batter registered 12.4 but it fired right
up. I turned it off and came in to the office.

Is there a thermal electrical thang somewhere in Chevelles. Obviously I
cannot trust going anywhere in it until it is found and fixed. Reliability
is way high up on my list of happys.

Thanks in advance.

I just put dual pullers on my 68 and the meter barely gets past 1/4 off
cold - and it functions correctly.Just gotta watch stray paper sucking
up against the outside of the radiator. Pullers will sure hold it there.
They work great ( in Texas) and were rigged up as dual connections in case
one goes bad the other is still working. They say getting rid of the bolt
on fan adds to hp as well. And the elimination of a spinning mass sure
won't hurt the water pump feelings. Plus it looks cool ( pardon the pun) .

Subject: [Chevelle-list] electric fan mounting question

I want to put an electric fan on my '65 Malibu. The question is whether
to mount it as a pusher or puller. I've been advised to mount it in front
of the radiator (pusher) and leave the present 7 blade clutch mounted fan
in place. It seems to me that the two fans could fight. In other words,
it seems that there would be some engine speed level below which the
electric fan is trying to move more air than the engine mounted fan can
pass. At that point the engine fan would partially block the flow of the
electric. This would be bad news as low engine speed is where extra air
flow is needed, especially in Phoenix at this time of year.

Does this sound as if it has the ring of truth or am I needlessly worried?
Is anyone running a setup like this? Any advice appreciated.

[Chevelle-list] Air Conditioning that ain't puffin

2004-06-15 Thread Scott Somers
You'all were extremely helpful with the question about headlights that I
thought that I would pose another question to the learned group of
Chevelains. Hope you don't mind another so soon. Got part of the answer
earlier but now looking for more tricks and fixes.

In my 68 Chevelle - Air flow with the air conditioning. It don't
blow...it sucks. It has good cold air but air flow is not like I am now use
too with these modern systems. Just had a relay put in the line to the fan
motor - that helped the fan speed at lot at lower engine speed - changed out
the squirrel cage to a light weight plastic with a 325 ( I think ) CFM unit.
Helped as well but more puff is needed. Got any ideas. A 600 or up CFM
would be good but it is a small box and I am not really into major dollar
a/c redos. But I am open to anything. It is factory with an upgraded
compressor. Seems mainly just poor air speed.

As it is going, since it will be a little on the miserable side in July and
August her in Texas, my wrench is going to throw in a new cam, roller
rockers, chrome Edlebrock intake to replace the one that is not chrome(
figures), moon finned valve covers ( boy have those climbed in price since I
got a set in the 60's) and I am sure a few other things that will appear on
the bill that he has not told me about. He keeps looking at one of his
blown 502s and bigger sitting on engine stands in the back room and saying,
it could fit, cept fot a leetle hole in the hood and a big hole in my
wallet.

Other than the fun of trying to make something old behave like something
young ( yeah, that logic probably had something to do with my recent
divorce ) I'm starting to wonder if I should mount the Chevelle body on an
entire Corvette running system.

Especially going into summer in Texas, any help will be greatly appreciated.
You'all really helped on the lights. Running with crappy lights was a
serious inconvience, running without good air flow is bordering on human
abuse and should not be tolerated.

Thanks in advance. I hope to help with answers some day instead of just
questions.

[Chevelle-List] Matching Numbers?

2003-02-26 Thread Scott Kintz

I am fairly new to the classic car world. I just bought my
first Chevelle last month and enjoy it immensely! However, people often talk

there some book to access that will tell me if these numbers match? And where
would I find such a book?

Scott

Numbers matching is individualistic and you will get different
opinion's.
To some it doesn't matter and Hot Rod is the way to go, to some it's
feeling good that at least the engine / trans match the VIN, to some
it's
everything matching in build date order - just as the car rolled off the
assembly line. My goal is it's nice to have a car as the day it rolled
off
the line. Sometimes getting to that point is expensive and turns into
an
obsession.

Numbers matching does increase the value over a car that is not, but
that
doesn't mean a car that is customized wouldn't hold an equal or greater
cash value for it's uniqueness.

I've found the Chevrolet by the Numbers book very helpful in
identifying
correct numbers. It brings you into the world of casting numbers and
dates. The book is offered in several ranges of years.

What year car is yours?

I need some advice on installing the exhaust
manifold on my 396. It's a 1966 Chevelle. I removed the headers to
put the stock manifolds back on. The motor is in the car. The passenger
side went in no problem. The driver side does not want to fit. I tried
from the top and the bottom and the steering arm gets in the way no matter

steering arm? If so, how difficult is that? Thanks for any advice.

I think this really sucks that guys are putting original
buildsheets on ebay... what a way to make a buck. I can see guys
tearing into the cars, finding the build sheets, selling the cars and then
holding the build sheets as hostages... or threating to sell them on ebay...
to be gone forever... what a low blow to our hobby... IMO ... Check
  this one
  out:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2403162655category=10076He's
already got a bid for $50 and that isnt even the reserve. What the heck
are you gonna do with a build sheet that doesnt match your car unless you try
to find the owner and swindle them out of ... just like that one on the
thread on TC where the guy was trying to get a $1000 for the Protecto-Plate
out of the guy he just sold the car to. Sucks!!
If I knew what the reserve was, I might just buy the thing to track
down the owner and give it to them. Do you think that would make their
day!! I know it would make mine. What a present!!
Thanks for listening to my venting. Of course this is just

Re: [Chevelle-List] 66 Chevelle SS frame question

2002-09-22 Thread Ted Scott

Larry
Sounds like you're in the southern climates if they only want 500 for a
convertible and 100 for an elky. Lucky man. We have to get them brought up
to Canada and then they cost an arm and a leg. Its for this reason that I'm
shortening an elky frame to put under my 64 convertible. Its a Beaumont
sport deluxe ( canadian only model ) so is quite rare and thus worth all the
bother. All running gear is std Chev.
In answer to your question I got the measurements from the shop manual.
While doing all my research I had fellow club members fax me in the frame
diagrams from 64 thru 67 manuals ( both canadian and american versions ).
All show the same dimensions ( although 1 diagram was in fractions of an
inch )
Last weekend I removed the frame from an elky and am now sending it out to
get sandblasted. Then plan on using POR-15 and maybe topcoat with a less
glossy chassis black.n Have no experience with powder coatings.
Nobody has come back with answers about whether frames from other makes such
as Olds, Buick or Pontiac will also match up. I do know that I checked about
6 of them at a meet and each line has their own set of numbers. If someone
had a diagram from a shop manual to fax me ( 705-258-4829 ) I'd be willing
to compare.
Hope this helps.

Ted:
3.17 exactly? wow its finally nice to hear a true number. i have been told
by
many it was 4 inches. I'm in the process of buying either a convertible or
el
camino frame for my 65. i want the convert but damn they want 500 for it
and
i can pick up the el camino frame for a 100. my plans are to cut it and
have
it powered coated (customer owns a coating company) before swapping. do you
think this is a bad idea? i really don't want to do a frame swap until its
finished. do you know of anywhere that shows the exact measurements? in
1970
my buddy and i bought a wrecked el camino with bad frame damage. we had a
68
chevelle frame and we cut and spliced the frame where the frame rails
turned
in. i wonder if we wouldnt have been better off sectioning the back half of
the elkie frame onto the chevelle frame?

Re: [Chevelle-List] 66 Chevelle SS frame question

2002-09-21 Thread Ted Scott

Larry, thanks for all the numbers. For the most part numbers by Paul Herd
matches the GM parts catalog I have but not 100%. You'll note a discrepancy
between Paul Herd and Hollander regarding 66 and 67 convertibles. I believe
Hollander is correct.
I've spent the last 2 years trying to find just the right frame to put under
my 64 convertible. Crawled under a lot of cars and checked frame part
numbers versus the GM book. So far it is bang on.
As I said originally the dimensions and mounting points are all the same
from 64 thru 67. The differences are the lack of a slight indent in 64 and
the different spring pocket in 67.
Convertibles and el caminos are boxed thru the center section and coupes and
station wagons are C shaped.
While the differences exist they do not preclude using any year frame under
any year body. Just change the springs if using a 67 under a 64 thru 66.
By the way, the part number is stamped in the left outside of the frame
ahead of the rear bumper bracket attaching slots. You'll also find the
manufacturer and date.
The difference in length of the coupe/convertible versus the station
wagon/el camino is 3.17 inches.
Ted

You can find the dimensions in any shop manual or factory assembly manual.
The 3.xx inches I referred to last night is expressed as 3.17 inches in some
diagrams and 3 3/16 in others

ones they show not working will work will very little modifications it
really
wouldn't be very funny to have one all powder coated and ready to drop a

if
you cut close to 4 inches off that el camino frame it will work on the
chevelle.

Re: [Chevelle-List] 66 Chevelle SS frame question

2002-09-20 Thread Ted Scott

64 frames are stand alone, 65 66 are the same and 67 are stand alone from
a purity point.
But all share the same measurements. They can all be made to interchange.
Read on.
In 65 with the addition of big blocks GM had to add a small indent into the
front cross member to facilitate changing the starter without having to
raise the motor.
The 67 with a progressive ( tapered ) rear spring has a different top
socket than the other years.
Also convertibles and el caminos are boxed in the center section. Coupes and
station wagons have a C shaped center section.
Station wagon and El caminos are 3.xx inches longer than the coupes and
convertibles. The good news is that the extra 3.xx inches is at the rear
between the outside mount behind the rear axle and back cross member.
So yes an el camino can be used under a coupe with only a small revision. It
will be heavier but stronger. And this isn't a bad idea with some of the
extra muscle some guys add.
If you use a 67 under a 64 thru 66 then you must also use 67 rear springs.
The convertible hutilizes more mounting points but these points are on all
frames.
Sorry for the long winded answer but before you rush out and buy something
research it thoroughly. Research is cheaper than parts that don't fit.

Chad:
not completely the case. yes the el camino frame will work but you need to
cut 4 inches out of the back section. also the station wagon is the same
length. the convertible frame is the same length as the hardtop. the nice
thing about either the el camino, station wagon or convertible is that the
frame is boxed. 64-65 are the same, 66-67 are the same and 68-72 are the
same. Also any other A body frame will work.
