gotta agree with Jay on this one. Not folowing instructions, and not reading
someone's CV before an interview ranks the same in my book.
Clark, on the other hand your welcome to post the jobs in the jobs mailing
list, cisco god, im sure you have an attitude problem. a cisco god wouldnt
even use such a nick, it's called humility, and they would also post with
their CCIE number right next to their name. Until the day you manage to
provide those 4 numbers with your name, LEARN SOME HUMILITY.

Not really - there is a LOT more BGP in the BSCN exam. Saying that, I did

RE: Interview Question - OSPF

2000-05-25 Thread Dollard Morgan

hmmm, ospf doens NOT support ipx or appletalk, thats EIGRP. and yes you
might want to redistribute a rip network into an ospf network, remember he
said network not a LAN. The whole purpose os an ASBR, is to connect an OSPF
area to the outside world, or any other routing protocol. so YES, you might
want to have both rip and ospf on your network. just like you can also
coexist IP and IPX, it works the same way. Redistribution is the key here.
of course if the guy meant, ok well we're gona run both rip and ospf on
EVERY router in our entwork, id say flat out in his face hes just plain

Good OSPF study material

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good study material for OSPF.
I am currently studying for my BCSN and do not feel I have a good grasp on

good review on Amazon. Would anyone care to comment on these books or make

In my opinion , erase some files depends of which router you are handling.
Is a 7500 , you can use the command squezze to set which files you want to
erase , then delete this marked files.
But for 3600 , I don't know how to do it. A workaround is partitioning
flash
, and put one image into each partition

Re: packets

2000-05-25 Thread Michael Fountain

Since you didn't specify the protocol, I am going to assume you mean for a
TCP connection.

When one side wants to set up a connection with the other side, it does a
"three-way handshake" by doing the following:

A - Sends SYN=1, ACK=0, SEQ=1000, ACK#=0
B - Replys ACK=1, SYN=1, SEQ=5000, ACK#=1001
A - Replys ACK=1, SYN=1, SEQ=1001, ACK#=5001

When the conversation is over, if both sides wants to close the
connection, they do a "graceful close" by doing the following:

A - Sends FIN=1, ACK=1, SEQ=2000, ACK#=6001
B - Replys FIN=1, ACK=1, SEQ=6001, ACK#=2001
A - Replys ACK=1, SEQ=2001, ACK#=2002

The SYN bit is letting the remote side know to synchronize the SEQuence
number it should be expecting.
The ACK bit indicates that the sender has recieved a packet from the
remote side, and it is now expecting to receive a packet with the sequence
number indicated in the ACK# field.
The SEQ field is a randomly generated number that the sender generates to
show where it will start at. It then increments this value by one for every
packet it sends
The ACK# field indicates what packet sequence number the receiver is
expecting to see next.

Can someone explain to me how the ack and sequence information in a packet
is used when establishing a connection?

Thanks
aaron

What are the chances of a CCNP finding a job without prior work
experience with routers and such?  I'm debating this issue with my
girfriend.  She thinks that job experience is more important, and that
I should be looking for a job to move me up.  I, on the other hand,
don't think I can find much of a job with just a CCNA and would rather

me a job. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Interview Question - OSPF

2000-05-25 Thread Carrico, Robert
Title: RE: Interview Question - OSPF

I believe people analyze these types of questions too much.

I would say "You have to run something besides OSPF and RIP would be feasible"

My answer is based on I'm running IP and IPX, so I choose RIP for my IPX implementation. What it boils down to is your explanation. These types of questions are general and a conversation or thread can go on forever in the different answers. However, not with a HR type that has a list of 10 technical questions to ask you. He writes down your response and explanation and gives it to the technical manager to interpret your responses.

The difficult part is you have to be sure to explain how you interpreted the question. In most cases the person doing the first round interview cannot elaborate on the question because they don't necessarily understand the question or know the answer.

RE: renaming of VLAN

Hello CiscoWave,

If it is just a vlan and not elan, then changing the name should
not impact the operation of it. If it is
an elan then all references to it in its lane components must be changed for

impacting ?
I am taking about the name only, and not changing the

For example changing the name from SALES to
SALES(10.1.1.0) for example ... It is interesting to
match layer 2 and layer 3 information when possible
(ie mask of 24 bits)

BSCN Beta Results...

2000-05-25 Thread McMasters, Eric

To All,
I've been trying to post this for the past three days, so if it is
duplicate for some I apologize in advance. The results were posted last
Friday and I already received my score sheet from Sylvan, so to say the
least I was surprised that I passed. I just wanted to pose a question to
the people on this list with this question. Is it possible that the Beta
tests are actually easier than the exam once it goes live? I have been
reading that everyone has passed these Beta exams, but I have not heard of
one person that has failed. Is this just a fluke? I just can not believe
that I passed the Remote Access, Switching, and Routing Beta exams and
didn't even study or crack a book. I just planned on taking them to see
what the test were going to be like. I have my CIT scheduled for next week
(I would of taken it also, but I couldn't get a time), so hopefully by the
end of the month I'll be a CCNP. I've read some posts on the CID that
aren't that encouraging, so I think I'll actually buy a book and study that.
Let me know what you think about this and maybe shed some light on the whole
thing for me. Thanks for everyone's help!

Ken, WOW, congrats for that :) (thats the ken at cisco)

the other ken, yammy,
im sorry before hand, but im going to have to flame you before you do
something stupid.
DONT GET UR CCNP without exp. thats the kind of stuff, that ruined microsoft
certs, thats ruining the CCNA, and that will eventually ruin the CCNP. on
top of that, you'll have a much easier time passing the ccnp if you have
work experinence and get real life exposure to networking.
i worked hard to get my ccnp, and im going for the ccie now, and i'd love to
see my certs keep their value and not get devalorized because some ppl think
its the easy road to getting the pot of gold. its not, its a hard and
demanding job, theres always something to learn, and always networks with
problems. a CCNP is expected certain things, and in case you didnt know, if
cisco receives complaints about incompetent work on your part, they can
revoke your certification. please do yourself a favor by getting experience,
your employer might pay ur certs after that, with training, and you'll wa
ste less time on your own doing so.
Morgan
PS, any1 who wishes to flame me on this subject is free to do so, i
guarantee it wont look pretty in the end.
I've met one CCNP that had no exp and didnt know wtf he was talking about,
and i hope for the others out there i never meet one again.

I received my CCNP almost two months ago. About 2
weeks after receiving the cert, I started firing off
my resume everywhere. I received a call from Cisco,
as they were interested in my background. I passed
the phone screening, then passed the brutal face to
face interviews at Cisco with about 7 people. I'm now
working with the IOS WAN Test team. Before this job,
I had about 10 years of experience with desktop
computers, network servers and Microsoft products. I
had a MCSE and a Compaq ASE. I made the switch to
Cisco as I see problems down the road for Microsoft.
I think Sprint Paranet will also hire you with a CCNP.

Now the task of getting a CCIE should be achievable
since Cisco gave me my very own testbed loaded with
 seven routers.

 Good Luck.

RE: [SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER] question - please help

What puzzled me is that, when I have the basic IP configuration, there's no
error message during system bootup. It MAY (I need to confirm that) be the
AppleTalk commands that I entered Interestingly enough, despite the
error message, the router functions without any problem (We have IP and
AppleTalk routing)

If you use Outlook/Outlook Express (and for that matter, any good e-mail
client), you can set up filters where all incoming messages containing the
phrase "Out of office" is either deleted or sent to a particular folder.

In Microsoft Outlook:
1. Click on Tools -- Message Rules --- Mail -- New. This dialog box is
divided into three parts - a). Select COnditions for your rule b) Select
Actions for your rule c) Rule Description
2. In CONDITIONS - Select "When the Subject line contains specific words"
3. In ACTIONS - Select "DELETE IT" or "MOVE TO SPECIFIED FOLDER"
4. In the RULE DESCRIPTION - click on the underlined blue words "Contains
Specific Words".
5. In the dialog box that opens, enter the words "Out of Office". Click OK.
6. If you've selected "MOVE TO SPECIFIED FOLDER" instead of Delete, click on
the underlined words "Move to a Specifed Folder". Enter the name of the
folder you want to move these messages to. If you selected DELETE, skip this
step.
7. Give the Rule a name, save it and you're done!!

This will also delete any Out of Office messages you get from people not on
this list - your colleagues, friends / associates, etc.

Outlook has the same feature under TOOLS - RULES WIZARD with very minor
differences in the interface. Once you get the hang of it and understand the
concept, you could do it in any e-mail client that supports message
filtering, based on different parameters like Sender's Name, Subject, Body,
From E-mail Address, etc. etc

Hope this helps...

As an internetworking engineer, you're not really SUPPOSED to know these
things, but I guess most people on that level do!! One realization that
dawns once you cross the Microsoft shores is - there's a whole world out
there that does not use Microsoft software!

RE: Interview Question - OSPF

2000-05-25 Thread Charlie Hartwell

This of course leaves the way open to get your non-technical HR
person to ask bizarre, embarrasing or just plain impossible
questions.

"So, Mr Berkowitz, could you please explain when a static RIP route
would be useful between autonymous systems?"

"Mr Lammle, when you've wired the left-handed wedgie-strap to the
Cisco trouter port, what's the next step to getting true voice over
avian-carrier signalling?"

"Assuming you are in the correct mode, what is the command to enable
bidirectional?"

Oh, how we would larf...

--- "Carrico, Robert" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I believe people

I would say "You have to run something besides OSPF and RIP would
 be
 feasible"

My answer is based on I'm running IP and IPX, so I choose RIP for
 my IPX
implementation. What it boils down to is your explanation. These
 types of
questions are general and a conversation or thread can go on
 forever in the
different answers. However, not with a HR type that has a list of
 10
technical questions to ask you. He writes down your response and
explanation and gives it to the technical manager to interpret your
 responses.

The difficult part is you have to be sure to explain how you
 interpreted the
question. In most cases the person doing the first round interview
 cannot
elaborate on the question because they don't necessarily understand
 the
 question or know the answer.

RE: BSCN Beta Results...

2000-05-25 Thread Clayton Dukes
Title: RE: BSCN Beta Results...

Eric,
It depends more on your experience rather than your study skills.
I feared the FRS exam for quite some time because I heard everyone talk about how difficult it was. In fact, I didn't take any of the exams because I didn't think I was ready (I learn by doing, not studying and forgetting). I now have my CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, and CCDP. I got all of them within a short 4 week period and scored quite well on the exams. I didn't really study much, only a few doc's and some practice tests.

Now, I would say that it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought, but I also have Ten years of real-world experience.

The point here is this; Don't assume that the tests are hard just because other people say they are, they may not know as much as you do.

...On to the CCIE (I bet I'll have to study for that one, huh?)

Good Voice Over Intro Book

2000-05-25 Thread Chuck

Just picked this one up last night. Read a couple of chapeters.

Very clearly written. Lots of informaion. Lots of configuration information. Good look
at the nuts and bolts of voice over, including terminology and functions and the H.323
standard.

Cisco Voice Over IP
Elliot Lewis and others
Syngress Press
ISBN 1-928994-03-2

and I have to say, after a very negative first impression of Syngress due to their
hideous first edition of the CCNA Study Guide, I am now quite impressed with a number
of things I have seen from Syngress, including their upgrade policy, and the fact that
they are disclosing the name of the proofreader. there is no incentive like the fear
of personal embarrassment if typos are attribute to you by name :-

RE: Interview Question - OSPF

2000-05-25 Thread Dollard Morgan

ROFL LMAO, i didnt think of that one, they ask, can ospf and rip coexist in
the same network, you tell him, well man, be clear, either way it can
coexist, but your not giving me enough info, are u runing RIP Ip or RIP IPX,
do u redistribute ur rip ip into ur ospf, because you wont be able to
redistrib ipx routes into an ip routing table, that would mean if you want
to do that, then you need to run eigrp, muahaha, those kind of questions are
so stupid, its a loop, it can go on forever, he asks a question, you answer
with 10 questions telling him to be more specific, i love this

I believe people analyze these types of questions too much.

I would say "You have to run something besides OSPF and RIP would be
 feasible"

My answer is based on I'm running IP and IPX, so I choose RIP for my IPX
implementation. What it boils down to is your explanation. These types
of questions are general and a conversation or thread can go on forever in
the different answers. However, not with a HR type that has a list of 10
technical questions to ask you. He writes down your response and
explanation and gives it to the technical manager to interpret your
 responses.

The difficult part is you have to be sure to explain how you interpreted
the question. In most cases the person doing the first round interview
cannot elaborate on the question because they don't necessarily understand
the question or know the answer.

Re: Good OSPF study material

2000-05-25 Thread Richard Holland

If you don't own Jeff Doyle's "Routing TCP/IP Volume I" (part of Cisco Press
"CCIE Professional development" series), get it. The largest chapter in the
book covers OSPF, couple that with reading the design guides, etc on CCO -
and you'll be an OSPF Ninja.

I recommend this book to anybody who does not own it (note: this book does
NOT cover BGP, pick up Halabi's book, read both of these books, complement
with your own lab work and cco, you'll understand routing %80 better than
you did before :))

This of course leaves the way open to get your non-technical HR

"So, Mr Berkowitz, could you please explain when a static RIP route

"Mr Lammle, when you've wired the left-handed wedgie-strap to the

I would say that depends on whether the avian carrier is African or

Gripe about CIT 4.0

2000-05-25 Thread Russell Lusignan

This morning I wrote the CIT 4.0 exam. I have written CCNA, ACRC, CLSC and
now CIT. Out of all of them I would have to say that the wording in the CIT
4.0 is the worst of them all. Not only do you have to study the exam
materials, you also have to study how to answer questions that contradict
themselves, give you multiple correct answers whereby you must choose the
most correct answer given the circumstances, and deal with the fact that the
questions don't clearly tell you what they want answered. Example.. (not
from the exam of course)

What colour is the sky on a normal day?
1) Blue
2) Dark Blue
3) Light Blue
4) A shade of blue slightly lighter than 2)
5) None of the above.

This question would have been easy had they added: 6) Not enough data is
given to answer the question.

Unless you have a complete grasp on the English language no matter how much
you know about the material, you will not pass this exam. I used the CIT
Cisco Press book, Exam Cram, Boson exams and working in the industry to
prepare. CIT Cisco Press book is a must (or equivalent). Exam Cram is
optional, I used it to quickly cover the main points. And finally the Boson
exams.. I have used these for every other exam which have helped, but for
this one they didn't help me much at all. I found the Exam Cram questions
were a lot more accurate to the CIT exam. But even then you will get a rude
awakening on the actual exam.. Bottom line, KNOW the course material from
the CIT Cisco Press inside and out. Anyhow, I passed the exam, but I felt
like griping about it anyways..

Russ..

DONT GET UR CCNP without exp. thats the kind of stuff, that ruined

top of that, you'll have a much easier time passing the ccnp if you have

i worked hard to get my ccnp, and im going for the ccie now, and i'd love
 to
see my certs keep their value and not get devalorized because some ppl
 think
its the easy road to getting the pot of gold. its not, its a hard and
demanding job, theres always something to learn, and always networks with
problems. a CCNP is expected certain things, and in case you didnt know,
 if
cisco receives complaints about incompetent work on your part, they can
revoke your certification. please do yourself a favor by getting
 experience,
your employer might pay ur certs after that, with training, and you'll wa
ste less time on your own doing so.

PS, any1 who wishes to flame me on this subject is free to do so, i

least I was surprised that I passed.

Re: Bandwith Tool or Software

2000-05-25 Thread daveandkris.com

MRTG is a free utility that can monitor anything that you can access using
SNMP. If you have your internet connection coming in through a router, you
can simply enable SNMP on that router and then monitor that serial interface
for its bandwidth. You will be able to see graphical stats for daily,
weekly and monthly usage. I have found that setting this up on a UNIX box
is the easiest approach although NT is also supported. You can get really
creative with this and monitor just about everything, even CPU temperature.

Re: Interview Question - OSPF

2000-05-25 Thread Richard Holland

I at no point said it was a good idea

I know VLSM and discontigous subnets break rip - we don't know enough from
the previous post to make assumptions. I can agree that it's rare to find
REAL networks with contigous subnets, and the same length subnet mask
network wide, but it happens.

I know it's pointless to run them both like that, RIP would just consume
bandwidth, processor, and depending on the design of the internetwork, break
routing all together

Redistribution is a wonderful thing, easy to implement, and efficient

The point of my post wasn't to argue these points. You mentioned you would
call somebody stupid, flat out, if they wanted to run rip and ospf network
wide. I don't agree with that, perhaps the "stupid" individual doesn't
understand VLSM and contigous subnets, maybe he thinks ospf and rip will
operate like normal, and the ospf routes will be put in the route table
before the rip routes due to admin distance, maybe he hasn't heard of
redistribution? That isn't stupid.. just uninformed.

Anyway, I didnt mean to start a big flame, so I apologize for picking your
spelling apart, I just dont like it when people take the "this guy's an
idiot" towards people who are just a tad bit mis-informed.

So, to make this thread worthwhile, to the originator of this thread and the
guy who mixed ospf and eigrp up:

1) EIGRP is the protocol that can handle ip,ipx, apple
2) running rip and ospf network wide, with no redistribution scheme at all
will BREAK routing in all but a few rare situations, and in those situations
where it wont completely destroy the routing tables network wide, it would
merely consume bandwidth, and serve no purpose.
3) RIP can't handle VLSM (Variable Length Subnet Mask, aka dividing an
address space unequally) but can handle subnetting where you use the same
length mask network wide.
4) Due to RIP's auto summarizing, it doesnt advertise subnets out an
interface on a different network, rather it advertises the entire network,
so if you have 192.168.1.1/30 --
 (routera) 10.1.1.1/8---10.1.1.2/8-
(routerb)192.168.1.5/30
you can see, 192.168.1.0 is split with the 10.0.0.0 network, so routera will
advertise 192.168.1.0/24 out on the 10.1.1.1 interface, and routerb will
advertise the same out it's 10.1.1.2 interface. So both router's learn they
have routers to 192.168.1.0 through each interface..you can see how this
breaks routings.

This demonstrates how discontigous subnets break rip, but if you put a
secondary addresse on the 10.1.1.1 and 10.1.1.2 interface, maybe
192.168.1.9/30 and .10/30, then you would create a contigous subnet, and rip
would function correctly (note you would have 2 packets coming out on the
10.0.0.0 segment per router, one for the primary and one for the secondary
address, consuming double the bandwidth).

Maybe im misinformed? This is the information i've learned from reading
Doyle's book, and running these protocols at work.

5) None of the above.

This question would have been easy had they added: 6) Not enough data is

Unless you have a complete grasp on the English language no matter how much
you know about the material, you will not pass this exam. I used the CIT
Cisco Press book, Exam Cram, Boson exams and working in the industry to
prepare. CIT Cisco Press book is a must (or equivalent). Exam Cram is
optional, I used it to quickly cover the main points. And finally the
Boson
exams.. I have used these for every other exam which have helped, but for
this one they didn't help me much at all. I found the Exam Cram questions
were a lot more accurate to the CIT exam. But even then you will get a
rude
awakening on the actual exam.. Bottom line, KNOW the course material from
the CIT Cisco Press inside and out. Anyhow, I passed the exam, but I felt
like griping about it anyways..

Russ..

RE: notebook PC as console

2000-05-25 Thread Vijay Ramcharan

Belkin has serial to USB converters available. USB to Ethernet is also
available (in case you're interested).
I'm pretty sure though that all notebooks do come with a serial port.

Subject: notebook PC as console

Sorry if this topic is way out of line and too stupid for most people, but
I'm really a Mac user, so I have an excuse. Because I will be teaching
Sniffer Pro classes, I have to buy a new notebook PC for taking on the
road. (Can't buy a Mac ;-()

My question: I want the PC to also act as a console port to Cisco routers
and switches. It seems from my cursory investigation that a lot of the
notebook PCs don't have a serial port anymore?? Or am I just not looking
hard enough at the spec sheets?

Many of them have a USB port. But does Cisco use USB for its console ports
yet? I don't think so!?

What do you all use for your PC console for a Cisco router or switch?

Once the router or switch is configured, of course I'll use Telnet to an
Ethernet port, but I'm worried about that initial config.

Thanks

Priscilla

CDP for NT ?

2000-05-25 Thread Phil Barker

Hi,

Anyone out there know if I can get a copy of "sh cdp"
for NT/98 etc ?

I wouldn't mind one for my Laptop as it would save me
currently trundling around with a 2924 under my arm.

If your wondering, the Network I am working on has
been going through Mergers and Aquisitions left, right
and centre. So the topology/logical info that is
documented is a little ropey.

Cheers,

Phil.

Not to be too nit-picky but that third part of the TCP handshake should
be:

A - Replys ACK=1, SYN=0, SEQ=1001, ACK#=5001

SYN should be 0 there not 1. probably just a typo.

 A - Sends SYN=1, ACK=0, SEQ=1000, ACK#=0
 B - Replys ACK=1, SYN=1, SEQ=5000, ACK#=1001

Percentage to success

Is it correct to say about the following:

CCNA is 10% to CCIE
CCNP is 50% to CCIE?

What I am looking at, is how far am I from CCIE when I obtain the CCNA

I know that you can't get an exact answer. But I am just looking for
the time (in proportion) that I need to put to each certificate. Let
say I am starting from scratch.

Cat 1900 and Full Duplex

2000-05-25 Thread J Neib

Cisco's website documentation says that full duplex operation is available
on all ethernet and fastethernet ports. However, I have several 1900s and I
cannot see how to turn on full duplex operation on ethernet ports. The
fastethernet ports have an option under Port Configuration, but no such
setting exists for the 10baseT ports. There is also no mention when you
view the port whether it is running half or full, or if it autonegotiating.

Do only the new 1900 switches support full duplex on all ports?

Re: CCNP and chances of finding a job

2000-05-25 Thread ken

the biggest problem I have, is finding a job where I can gain experience
with cisco routers. I have had 3 prior jobs dealing with PC's and internet
tech support but it's pretty tough to get my foot in the door with just a
CCNA. My goal here is to just be able to get a job, and what I'm wondering
is if a CCNP will land me one, because it seems like the ccna wont really
help much here. Not necessarily one that will pay me a good lump but one
where I can at least start to get some experience with routers. currently I
only have a 2501 here at home that my parents got for me.

 Ken

 Good Luck.

RE: ISDN caller ID

2000-05-25 Thread Cohen, Michael

It is possible however not in the same way that IP address spoofing is.
ISDN/PSTN calls use out of band signalling to establish communications.
This means that there are totally seperate networks for actual voice traffic
and call signalling. The signalling network utilizes the System Signalling
7 (SS7) protocol suite. It is in the signalling network where caller ID
information is transmitted specifically in the ISDN User Part Initial
Address Message (ISUP IAM) which is sent to initiate a call accross the SS7
network. To answer your question, though I don't know exactly how one would
go upon manipulating the caller ID information contained in an ISUP IAM, it
is certainly possible to hack SS7. You would need access to a Signalling
Point (SP SS7 connection, usually a PBX) as this is where the SS7 network is
terminated, not at the local loop.

purchased the 8 port Server Iron to load blance our Web servers. It runs

Hi,

I am doing a study on DDR. On my router, I configured the bri0 interface, and
it works fine. The router can place a call to the other end and traffic
passes through
perfectly. (It means all the isdn interface and dialer configuration are
correct).

My problem is, once i placed the interface as a backup for another serial
interface
(frame relay ), the bri0 is placed in standby mode automatically and even
the layer 1
and layer 2 for the bri0 are administratively shutdown automatically. I
tried to shutdown
the primary frame relay interface and the backup bri0 never comes up.

I tried it on different routers with the same result.

Is this behavior normal or I missed something?

Thank you very much for advice.

Jim.

Attached is my configuration sample:

  int s0
encapsulation frame-relay
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
backup delay 10 30
backup interface bri0

Thanks

Priscilla

the SHUT command on your primary interface will not bring the backup
interface up. so what you are seeing is definitely normal. if your backup
interface DID come up from a shut command on your primary interface, then
I'd say you have a broken router!

try using a floating static route instead...or pull the cable off the serial

Since this is frame relay, an easy way to test it is to change your LMI type
on the interface to a type not being used and within 10/15 seconds the
interface will go down and the backup interface should go active.

Also, Backup does not work on multipoint sub-interfaces with the loss of a
PVC.

Dollard,

You've got a point. I think everyone on the list would
agree that nothing can buy experience. It's
invaluable. But how do you expect one to get
experience when your job is limited to network
desktop support with an ocassional router install? Do
you expect us all to get Cisco to employ us give us
the experience? It's a catch-22. Employers only want
experienced people but not willing to give potential

to get that valuable experience. I guess that makes

support version control, editing, pulling and pushing configurations.

You can either use the commands or call the modules in your own perl scirpts.

The module is located at: http://www.cpan.org/modules/01modules.index.html

Look for keyword cisco.

Re: Calculating bandwidth utilization

2000-05-25 Thread David

you'll do it manually just like any network management tools would do
it. Take a timed snapshot from the interface counters (show interface)
to figure out bytes/sec. then you can divide that by the max bytes/sec
to get a percentage.

'sh proc' will give you a cpu usage line at the top.

'sh mem' shows various memory statistics.

I just posted something else about this recently. One easy way if you
have expect installed is to run 'autoexpect', telnet to the router, run
one command, then exit. After that, exit autoexpect, and modify the
name of the command you ran with $argv. Then to run any command on that
one router, you'd just run

./script.exp 'some cisco IOS command here'

another way is to use an old livingston C utility called 'pmwho' still
available on their ftp site at

ftp://ftp.livingston.com/pub/le/contrib

or something very similar to that.

very strange that I've posted 6 answers now to the same two questions.
I think that was the last time.

Employers only want
experienced people but not willing to give potential
employees with paper CCNA, CCNP, for example, a chance
to get that valuable experience. I guess that makes
privileged people like yourself more invaluable and
your job more secured.

RE: Working it too hard?

2000-05-25 Thread Bartlett, DS1

Your DHCP requests are only going to be processed during startup. All the
router is going to do is handle a helper address, which means when a station
boots up it will send a broadcast asking for an IP. The router sees the
request and forwards the packet on as a unicast message. There is no real
impact on router performance for such a small task. Beware the idiot users
though who insist on shutting down their machine each time something
happens.

75 idiots can bring down any network. And remember all our jobs would be
real easy if only we could get rid of the users.

handle DHCP
requests.

My question is what if I'm asking the router to do too much?

I'm using a Cisco 1700 series router with about 75 computers running
win98.
The 1700 only has 1 static route to another router (no heavy
processing like
extensive access lists here) and nothing else. Am I asking this 1700
series
to handle too much?

How many PC's asking for IP's before it craps out? What if I use a
2600
series instead? How many PC's could it handle?

If it does crap out what can I expect as a reaction? It just
freezing or
something more sinister?

Re: Percentage to success

2000-05-25 Thread John Dill

This is hard to quantify, if, you've taken the complete journey, you probably won't
have a great deal of recollection. Nevertheless, I'll take a stab:

Starting with not much experience but a good aptitude, I'd say that CCNP requires 10
times the effort of CCNA, while CCIE will ask about 10 times the effort of the CCNP.
So, by your numbers, I'd estimate:

CCNA is 1% to CCIE
CCNP is 10% to CCIE

Is it correct to say about the following:

CCNA is 10% to CCIE
CCNP is 50% to CCIE?

What I am looking at, is how far am I from CCIE when I obtain the CCNA
and CCNP.

I know that you can't get an exact answer. But I am just looking for
the time (in proportion) that I need to put to each certificate. Let
say I am starting from scratch.
