Re: CCIE Writen Failed again

I really don't think the survey would have anything to do with your score. I
would find that very hard to believe that Cisco would punish people for not
filling out a survey...however I would find it more then natural for them to
punish people by not knowing the material by flunking them...

few of the course manuals, but I'm looking for other post-CCNP level
hopefuls that are a few months away from taking the lab...

I just purchased an 804 on Ebay, now I'm selling it there... I have plenty
of access to the other equipment at work (AS5200, AS5300, etc. etc.) I just
need to get experience with the ASDL and cable stuff. Lets trade
experience, course information, and lab stuff. I'm MOTIVATED!

The main reason why I'm so amped is they keep adding stuff to the ISP-Dial

Re: ip and subnet

2000-06-20 Thread pedro quezada

he is using a 10.0.0.0 network why in world would you use ip subnet zero.

you would only use ip subnet zero if you need all the posible addresses
posible . He can configure 16 millon host with that private class A adreess.

in order for Wesson to determine his subneting scheme .he should think about
what is the grouth in computers he will have , does he have remote sites
(sumarization) , routers in between so many things.

wess:
you can stick with the /16 and keep one whole ip domain with a single subnet
or /24 and keep smaller subnets.

it is a rougfh question if the infrastructure is not known .

Re: Serial over Ethernet

2000-06-20 Thread Rodgers Moore

OK, I see you want to conserve IP addresses, so what you need to do is use
private address space on the ISL subinterfaces and then perform nat on the
router to the public IP's. Remember that NAT doesn't require the IP's being
translated actually belong to a network connected to the router.

If PAT will work for you, use the serial's IP address with NAT and use the
OVERLOAD command.

I hope this makes sence, I don't have time to give you an example.

Seems to me that the abundance of Token Ring routers and equipment

does the exam you get on the ccda depend on the stuff you fill b4 the exam??

2000-06-20 Thread Oladele Ayuba

I took CCDA today and yes passed.
the pre exam tips i got were far from what was on the test...Does the exam
pattern depend on what you fill out b4 the test or what...I went in expecting to
be able to review past questions but was not allowed and I only expwcted to get
2 case studies and got 5 WHY... Is this what everybody else got?

Moving on to CID now

Re: Cisco for Woman?

2000-06-20 Thread Seabreeze

Life has many obstacles and many ism's, it's the way of the world, sad but
true. But a positive attitude has and will continue to change many
things. True there are not many women in this area but they are there, in
fact just recently while looking for a new job I was interviewed by a woman
who is head of Networking in a large company here in the UK and in the
position I decided to take there is a female CCIE, I believe she was among
the first 100 CCIE's in the world, and for sure I know there are many more
to come!!! I am one of them :-)

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference!!

Re: setting mtu size on a 2611

2000-06-20 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

I'm coming in on the middle, so this point may have already been made:

You should do the fragmentation and interleaving at the datalink layer with
FRF.12 or multilink PPP. Don't set the MTU on the interface for the
following reasons:

It will cause IP to fragment. The packets will remain fragmented until they
reach the end-node recipient. This causes extra work for the recipient. In
addition, it's silly to have fragments on the other end if the other end is
a Gigabit Ethernet, for example. With FRF.12 and multilink PPP, the partner
router reassembles at the datalink layer.

Some protocols, such as AppleTalk and IPX, don't have a fragmentation and
reassembly function. Setting the MTU to a small size simply breaks those
protocols.

Newbie trying to build a lab

2000-06-20 Thread Vinnie Smith

Hi all,

I have been lurking while I learn more about the Cisco product line and this
world of networking. I am trying to build a lab so that I can practice some
of the things in my CCNA book. I could use some advice as how to place it
all together. Types of set ups that would be helpful, cabling issues, where
to obtain additonal cables etc. I currently have 2 routers 1 is a 2501 and
the other is a 2503. Any URLs and\or advice would be helpful. Thanks in
advance,

OK, this is the 2nd time that I've flunked this test. The thing that really
gets me is that I actually checked my answers 3 times and felt highly
confident about it.

1st question What does that survey at the beginning have to do with
determining your score? I mean if you answer low or something does that
help you?

2nd Question Who else hates the ** test?

Thanks for your input.

Passed Support 2.0 - New CCNP !

2000-06-20 Thread Rob Fielding

I just passed the Support 2.0 test with a score of 873. There were 61
questions, 692 required to pass. The test had some confusing questions, but
it wasn't too bad. It did not have the technical detail I expected, but it
still required very in-depth study. I used the CIT 4.0 course book, the
Exam Cram book, boson #2, Priscilla Oppenheimer's flash cards, and threads
on this list. Thank you, Priscilla for your excellent flash cards, and
thanks to everyone on this list once again.

Re: ip and subnet

2000-06-20 Thread NoOneYouKnow

This won't work because the subnet for the first floor includes the
addresses you are then trying to assign seperately to floors two and three.
You first floor subnetwork includes addresses from 10.150.0.0 -
10.150.255.255. So, any traffic from floor one to floors two or three will
not be sent to the router because the source will assume, given its address
and mask, that it exists on the same network as the destination. The router
won't know where to send traffic from floor two bound for floor three, since
addresses in the 10.150.102.x range could be on floor one or floor three.
Same for sending from three to two.

Will the router even let you set this up this way? I've never tried. Maybe
it would assume it was dual homing and would try load balancing between the
floor one and floor three interfaces, giving intermitant results when
sending from floors two or three.

Stick an extra 8 bits on the subnet mask for the first floor, and allow ip
subnet-zero, and it should work.

Re: Firewalls

2000-06-20 Thread David

You'll probably want to look up performance stats with Cisco and
Checkpoint directly, although I would doubt that Checkpoint is faster.
Can someone else with more experience on PIX hardware jump in with more
information? You also have to look at the cost perspective. Ok, maybe
Checkpoint running on an E450 or an E3000 will be as fast as much less
hardware/cost in a PIX solution. But, do you have the extra rack space
to lug one of those Sun boxes in? Do you have a hired unix admin to
take care of the box when it goes down, or needs general
maintenance/upgrades? Sun reps can be expensive.

In general, hardware based firewalls are always going to be faster.
I've worked a lot with the netscreen 100 devices that are mostly
hardware based, cost about $10,000 and use 100Mb ethernet ports on all
sides. They perform very well under a wide variety of traffic loads,
although I've never pushed more then 70Mb/s through it. Using a
SmartBit to max it out isn't always the most realistic of scenarios
either. Netscreen claims that their hardware adds very little
(microseconds) latency, but again, this is all in their labs using only
SmartBits. I haven't measured realistic latency myself.

Ok enough firewall plugs.. I'd really suggest going to the NetworkWorld
trade journal site http://www.networkworld.com and searching for
firewalls in their archives. They do routine performance evals of every
major platform out there.

Re: Off Topic - Technical Review, OR What do I know? :->

A Cisco editor would have caught that! ;-)

It means prioritize SNA before e-mail, i.e. SNA is higher priority than
e-mail. SNA on a LAN is encapsulated in something, such as TCP/IP and
Ethernet, (thought that is not at all relevant.)

Re: Serial over Ethernet

2000-06-20 Thread Nodir Nazarov

Tony,

I am very short of IP addresses and wanted to reduce public IP utilization
by 75%.
PPPoE is not supported on my routers (I have c26xx). Here is the story -
the router will provide internet access to many workgroups located on
different VLANs. I am running 802.1q (switch is not from cisco)
encapsulation on router subinterfaces. On each VLAN I will have third party
NAT boxes, so they need 1 public IP address. I was thinking to save 3 IP
addresses on each VLAN, if this is possible at all, of course. If I can
"emulate" ethernet sub-interface as serial, then give "unnumbered", the
solution looks pretty straightforward...

I want to use rate limit on subinterfaces too.

PPP Multilink question

2000-06-20 Thread David Smith

Hi all,

I hope someone can help me understand something about PPP multilink. I was
reading up on it, and checking the routers at my job to verify that it was
working. Whenever two routers have a dial connection using BRIs and they
are configured to use PPP Multilink (PPPM), they work fine and the command
"show ppp multilink" gives me info about them.

We have a 3640 with a PRI that a bunch of local routers with BRIs use for
dialup. The BRIs are configured for PPP multilink, but the PRI is not.
Over the weekend I tried getting it to work. I have also read several
articles on CCO and read the section in ACRC on PPPM, but have found no
configs for PRI and PPPM. So, I think that it probably cannot be done, but
I am not sure why.

My two questions:
1. When the local routers call up and bring up two B channels, they are not
using PPPM. How does the data flow differ in this instance from a PPPM
connection?

2. What is different about a PRI that does not allow the PPPM to be
configured?

Thanks,
Dave

IOS naming convention

2000-06-20 Thread Michael Fountain

Hey, I just sent a note out about synch/asych ports on a 1005 being based on
the IOS. Then I came up with this after I deleted the note. Thougth it
might be ineteresting to pass on.

IOS Naming convention -
  http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/620/4.html#version

The value of the IOS features -
  http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/620/5.html

q - does indeed mean you are able to run asynch
n - IPX enabled
y - reduced IP

hope that helps

Re: Memory Calculation

2000-06-20 Thread Robert Padjen

You will find that such a formula will require the
specific IOS, feature set available, feature set used,
routing protocol(s), interfaces, sub-interfaces, the
phase of the moon at installation... (Actually you
might not need sub-interfaces! ;)

Every formula I have ever seen fails miserably - the
one for EIGRP from Cisco reported that 1.5 MB would be
enough - we died with almost 40 free before the
installation.

Basically, if you are going to do BGP, EIGRP or OSPF
I'd max the memory - its cheap. Also, NAT, PAT,
access-lists and other features would tend to
influence my desire to load things up. Just as with
PCs, you're best bet is to have enough. Otherwise,
make a best guess, load it up and take a look - baring
in mind that new features may put you over the top.

Re: ip and subnet

2000-06-20 Thread Joe Pinkus

No this will not work, tell us what will happen when a user on floor 1, let's
say his ip address is 10.150.25.25/16 tries to ping a user on floor 2 whose ip
address is 10.150.100.25/24. The ping will fail, but you need to know why in
order to understand why this ip scheme will not work. By the way, if you are
using a private address, why are you choosing an addressing scheme like this
anyway.

RE: collision on cut-through switch

2000-06-20 Thread Heskett, Tony

Not a white paper, but let's see whether *I* understand
how it's supposed to work

Cut-thru waits for the dest addy, then starts forwarding.

Frag-free waits for 64bytes, then starts forwarding.

Store'n'forward waits for the whole packet and CRC's it,
so will only forward truly valid (tm) packets.

Sooo... cut-thru will forward runts, and you'll get
those if there's a collision after the dest addy but
within the first 64.

Frag-free will /not/ forward runts, so will protect
you from collisions that really should have happened.
It won't protect you from 'late collisions' (that
shouldn't have happened), but you're gonna fix your
cable plant to remedy those (aren't you? :-)

Or am I lying ? :-)

need some advice on the best way to set them up for a lab. In addition,
please include any info that you think would be useful to simulate different
activities with these routers. I am concerned as to where to get some of
the cables necessary. I just received them last week and have console
cables and 1 v.35 cable.
Thanks in advance,

Re: ip and subnet

2000-06-20 Thread Russell Lusignan

The way you have it setup means that 2 and 3 floor won't be able to talk to
eachother, but the 1st floor will be able to talk to both of the other
floors, 2nd and 3rd floor will be able to talk to some hosts on the 1st
floor, plus there is a chance of overlapping addresses if your not careful.
If your goal is have all the floors to talk to eachother, a better way to
subnet it would be:

1st - 10.150.1.0 255.255.0.0
2nd - 10.150.2.0 255.255.0.0
3rd - 10.150.3.0 255.255.0.0

This way all floors are in the same subnet therefore they can all see each
other.

Hope that helps
Russ..

RE: IOS 12.1 Dialer Weirdness

2000-06-20 Thread Diegmueller, Jason (I.T. Dept)

: Try adding the "no cdp enable" to the interface.and see if
: that helps. Had
: experiences where CDP was causing problems for load
: balancing. Also check
: if the release of the IOS is a GD or ED. If it's ED, you may want to
: down/upgrade to a GD version.

I believe the way it works is that T-train releases will never go GD,
there's no way for 12.1(2)T to be GD. 12.0 is GD, and subsequent
releases (12.0(11) last I checked was the latest) will be as well.
12.1 will be the next to go GD, with 12.1T becoming 12.2 (which is
when they stop adding features, and instead focus solely on bugfixes).
If I have misunderstood this, anyone, please correct me .. I've spent
over a year trying to understand exactly how this works. =)

I'm hoping they put some new 12-releases out soon; I just had to
upgrade to 12.0(7)XK1 to support some new NMs we purchased, and it's
got some .. interesting quirks to say the least. Nothing that's been
service-affecting, just weird IOS parser bugs and the like.

I've got a bug with TAC, we'll see what happens. I'd never reported a
bug before, very exciting. =)

Memory Calculation

2000-06-20 Thread Masaru Umetsu

Hello,all !

I have a question regarding a memory calculation.
When I buy a Cisco router,I have to make a calculation of memory(DRAM)
of Cisco router. Until now I have decided a memory quote in my
experience. However I want to calculate a memory exactly by considering
a serial interface that I use , and a number of entries in routing table
etc. How do you usually calculate a memory in Cisco router when you buy
it ? I can check the quote of IOS in Cisco web but there's no tool to
calculate a memory quote regarding a DRAM.

Please give me your idea etc soon !

IP Addressing

2000-06-20 Thread SH Wesson

I currently have one floor where my routers and servers are. These are
address as 10.100.1.x and 10.100.2.x addresses with a subnet of /16. I'm
adding two more floors. However, in adding two more floors can I address
these floors as for instance 10.100.11.x, 10.100.12.x, 10.100.13.x, and
10.100.14.x with a subnet mask of /24. I'm confused as to how this may work
if I have them all at a /24 subnet mask, a /16 subnet mask in the current
floor and /24 subnet mask in the new floors, or even changing everything
including the existing floor and new floors all to reflect /24. Any help
with this ip address stuff and how the new floors can be integrated would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: collision on cut-through switch

2000-06-20 Thread David C Prall

Without doing any research and only depending on the seat of my pants, here
is what I believe.

In a cut-through environment, the switch will only buffer the necessary
portion of the frame that is necessary for it to know where to switch the
frame to. It doesn't care if the frame is a jumbo or not, a collision or
not. Therefore if a packet is received destined for the broadcast address
and the header is in tact and looks completely correct, yet the packet is
hacked all to hell because of a collision beyond the header information,
this collision will be broadcast to all devices.

In a store-and-forward environment, the switch buffers the entire packet and
handles error conditions so that end-systems do not have to be interrupted
in order to process erroneous packets.

I believe that on a number of switches, they can be configured as
cut-through with some extra checking. Should a port be receiving a large
number of erroneous packets, they will reconfigure themselves on the fly to
store-and-forward in order to guarantee the highest throughput possible.

These are just my quick thoughts, I'm sure a little research would lead to a
more fully-qualified answer. But, you get what you pay for.

work in terms of all three networks being able to communicate with each

Set priority of the existing DR to 0. That'll force an election. You
may need to manipulate the priorities of teh other routers to ensure the
router of your choice becomes the DR.

Re: IOS 12.1 Dialer Weirdness

2000-06-20 Thread Russell Lusignan

Try adding the "no cdp enable" to the interface.and see if that helps. Had
experiences where CDP was causing problems for load balancing. Also check
if the release of the IOS is a GD or ED. If it's ED, you may want to
down/upgrade to a GD version.

Let me know

Re: Backup Interface

2000-06-20 Thread Russell Lusignan

You need to configure the backup interface from the serial interface ie:

router# int s0
router#(config-if) backup interface bri0
router#(config-if) backup delay 20 40

or

router#(config-if) backup interface dialer1
router#(config-if) backup delay 20 40

It would probably be better to use a Dialer interface instead of using the
BRI interface directly.

Hope that helps
Russ..

RE: trace pop3?

2000-06-20 Thread JULIUS OMIDIORA

The first question is has it ever worked, if yes, then what changed since it
last worked, either on your network on the account, confirm with your ISP
that the Zone file us still properly set up and that it has not changed.

You should be able to telnet to the pop3 account on both ports (25 and 110)
if not, it could be a firewall problem (More than likely) if you are behind
a firewall or router configuration i e access list et all or that the
account is incorrectly set-up or non assistance. If I were you I'll be
getting unto my ISP, they need (amongst other things) be able to telnet to
the pop3 account on port 110.

Use the "log" keyword on your access lists if your IOS version supports
it (I think 11.x) so you can see which lines deny or permit which
packets on which interface, If you don't or can't, you can also use
"show ip accounting access-violations".

ccda

2000-06-20 Thread Patrick Duggan

Hi to anybody taking the CCDA.
I took it recently and had a shock when the exam flunked out after 7
questions. (I guess corrupted files on the transfer)?
Well the point is after a 30 min wait for a second download the 2nd exam was
a completely different format than the first.
The first exam had 88 questions with marking capability, the second had (i
think) 77 and NO marking capability.First question was a scenario as i was
jittery it was a bit unnerving not being able to mark and go back.
So presume nothing, please no emails for questions.
Good Luck

TCP Connection terminated

2000-06-20 Thread Chan Dovelet

Hi,

I our company, we have a HP Openview NNM and some
Cisco routers (4500, 7200). After I setup the NNM, I
found that I always receive a SNMPTRAP "TCP connection
has been terminated. (tcpConnectClose Trap)
tsLineUser:" from the routers. Does anyone know what
does this message means? Is there any problem in our
network?

Regards.

IOS 12.1 Dialer Weirdness

2000-06-20 Thread Darren Ward

Hi All,

Has anyone had problems with 12.1.2T and ISDN multilink using a dialer
profile?

I upgraded a 3640 from 12.0.4.T to 12.1.2.T and while everything else
worked the multilink PPP did not.

I'll elaborate, the dialer brought up BRI3/0 and BRI3/1 and made the 4
calls one after the other like it should and bound them into a virtual
interface but then the dialer started reporting errors saying LCP not
open when all 4 channels did successfully negotiate LCP and both they
and the virtual bundle showed LCP open. The Dialer showed spoofing.

The end result no pings or traffic was working across the link.

Downgraded the IOS and it all started miraculously working again!

Only difference is IP Plus to IP Plus Firewall.

Any thoughts?

Darren

RE: collision on cut-through switch

2000-06-20 Thread Jay Dunn

Looking at this logically, I don't see how Cisco would not allow for this. A
fundamental function of a bridge (besides a layer 2 forwarding decision) is
to re-establish the slot time, thus making it a collision domain boundary.
If cut-through-switching negates extending the network diameter in the name
of speed, what's the point?

Subject: collision on cut-through switch

Hi Group Study,

I got into a discussion with a knowledgeable Sniffer instructor recently.
When he teaches cut-through-switching theory, he warns his students that a
cut-through switch does not really isolate collision domains. Consider this
example:

* The switch is receiving a frame from port 1 destined for a station out
port 2.
* The switch recognizes the destination address and starts forwarding the
frame to port 2 ASAP.
* There is a collision on port 2. (It's a shared and/or half-duplex
Ethernet.)

According to the instructor, the Switch sends a jam signal back to port 1
to let the initial sender know that the frame experienced a collision. This
allows the sender to retransmit.

If you read some of the books on switching, you would think that this is
true. The books make it sound like the frame is passing through the switch
and disappearing out the destination port as soon as the destination
address is recognized.

I don't think the Sniffer instructor's conclusion is true, however. I
believe that a Cisco cut-through switch buffers the frame and hence has the
ability to retransmit. There is no requirement to send a jam to the
original sender because port 2 in our example retransmits after sensing the
collision.

I believe that Cisco switches store frames, even when doing cut-through,
whereas the instructor assumed that the frame has passed through and out
the port and is no longer available for retransmission by the switch.

Cisco positions cut-through as reducing delay, not reducing the need for
buffering, so I'm contending that I'm right.

Who do you think is right? Can you point me to any white papers that would
prove who is right?

Thanks

Priscilla

CCNA 2.0

I took the test yesterday and scored a 935 without studying. It isnt much
different then the 1.0 exam from what I saw. The passing score is higher

taking the 2.0 version instead of the 1.0 if you feel pretty confident

Anyway, recommandation?
Cisco 7500 router and Catalyst 5000/6000 series seems not suitable, as it as
very slow backplane
and $$/gigabit channel are very expensive.
i think it's because it is not designed for gigabit switiching

Anyway, I've checked Cat. 4000, it seems oko.
But, are there any other suggestions?

trace pop3?

2000-06-20 Thread tayta

we have a funny problem from our small network. None of us can Receive mail
from a certain mail server that we use at a remote location. We can however
send mail, using accounts based on that server.

We can telnet to port 25 but NOT to 110, on the remote mail server.

All indications are that this is a firewall problem. I have taken down acls
on our office Router temporarily to check this at our side, but problem
still persisted.

Guys at the other side are 'sure' the problem does not lie with them, it
could of course lie at our ISP, but extremly unlikely or?

Would be grateful for any trouble shooting tips, to determine where the 110
pkts are being dropped

thanks in advance

group???  I'm getting a few of the course manuals, but I'm looking for
other post-CCNP level hopefuls that are a few months away from taking the
lab...

I just purchased an 804 on Ebay, now I'm selling it
there...  I have plenty of access to the other equipment at work (AS5200,
AS5300, etc. etc.)  I just need to get experience with the ASDL and cable
stuff.  Lets trade experience, course information, and lab stuff.  I'm
MOTIVATED!

The main reason why I'm so amped is they keep
adding stuff to the ISP-Dial cert... let's pass this before they add more!
:)

Re: Catalyst 6509 Giga EtherChannel- trunking

2000-06-20 Thread George

Sorry for something error in the chart. The VLAN between 6509s is VLAN20
with the same network segment. VLAN3 is divided into 2 for more services
reliability, but only one Gateway could be set here in one of the 6509 Switches.
So when the 6509 with the GW crash, VLAN3 still have to be shut down.
I think the VLAN3 could also be set to 2 VLANs so there needn't rely more on
the inter-link trunking. But sometime maybe it's not permitted. Could someone
give more analysis about the performance of trunking technologies?

poor quality , they just cut and paste some question from a few white paper
, most of the even wrong answer ? Please tell me if there is other test !

which VPN solution to choose

2000-06-20 Thread Jim Bond

Hi there,

Which solution is better, Checkpoint or Cisco? Someone
recommends Aventail, is it any good? I check their web
sites and they have a lot of customers. What's the
difference between Checkpoint and Aventail? One
hardware, one software?

Thanks in advance.

Jim
