I am feeling like ripe idiot at this time :-0
When I posted the original message I posted it to the wrong group!  It was
intended for the comp.dcom.sys.cisco mob.

1000 apologies. I have been working on some
labs for the last couple of hours and did not notice I seem to have started a
little something here.

That said, it wouldn't do any harm to do something

either.

2000-07-29 Thread Olden Pieterse

Hi there

Ive seen some of my fellow engineers put : bandwidth 8 : statement in a
config on a 64k isdn line we used for dial on demand .
As far as I know you put the bandwidth equal to the size of your line (56 or
64 etc) .
What does this imply ? Is the datastreams smaller (8k) but still utilizing
the whole 64k or is it wasted space (which I cannot think why you would want
to waste bandwidth ?

waiting in anticipation

Passed CID 3.0

2000-07-29 Thread Tan Choh Koon

Hi,

Just passed my CID today and now finally obtain my CCDP.
Some tips to share with all of you who preparing for CID exam.

I use Cisco Press CID book & Boson test #1 & #2 ( #1 is close to exam
question not #2 ) Highly concentrate on tcpip network design, desktop
protocol design & wan design its cover 75% of exam. totals of 100 questions,
can return to previous answered question passing score 65.
What is missing in Cisco press CID book is Stratacom IGX/BPX/iPX and
stratsphere. This topics is covered in Cisco official training manual only.
Info in Cisco online on the BPX... does not help much too technical spec.

Well i feel it is much more easy than DCN to answer the questions cos no
case study. But i had higher scored for DCN ! 90 over marks( i thought i am
going to fail before i press submit button) . For CID I am really confident
with my scored, but i had only 72% passed. All because of SNA i scored 0 out
of 7. I knew i am very bad in SNA but any how i confident i can scored 2-3
question but i had zero, no ideal why ? few SNA question is closed to Boson
test #1 , may be Boson given me wrong answer perhap :))
Sorry to say that :)

Any how I am happy with it, I want to take long break later go for CCIE
written.
How many questions in ccie writen & how many exam to take ? except the lab.

Greetings!

I was wondering if anyone knew the specifics on just how much of an effect
that PAgP, VTP, and DTP would have on convergence times. I had this info
once upon a time but someone lost the document and we can't determine when,
who, or where it might have strayed to. I looked on CCO but that info
doesn't seem to be posted anywhere and I can't test it out. The users would
get upset if I took down their network just to check something out and
they're the ones who pay me so

failed support 2.0, have a format question, please reply

2000-07-29 Thread Ms. Maria

Hi,

Well, It was a surprise for me to see differnet format of exam as I saw in
my other three CCNP exams. There was no list of commands given, all you
have to know from your own memory. Many answer I gave, just missed them
because of the way I answered.
Now my main question is, when we fill in the blanks, how we know what kind
of wording to choose? like "identical" and "same" are similar word. How we
get scored on them? Different people can choose different wording for the
same answer.

I noticed that a lot of questions came from Cisco press official CIT
book, everything covered, even the sections that I didn't pay close attention
thinking that they are not important, like Appendix. My mistake was that I
had another CIT book (not cisco press) and paid close attention to it, but
exam came from offical guide. aahh

and also How we answer for commands? (there is not exhibit to choose from)

Router#show isdn status
or just
show isdn status

Please let me know as I am planning to retake it this week, in 2/3 days.
(will make sure to read only offical cisco press CIT book, cover by cover)

Thanks!

IMPORTANT NOTICE

2000-07-29 Thread ian gomeche

right thats got your attention!

as interesting and useful that this list is, it would be a lot more damn
useful and interesting if people would STOP posting in HTML. it takes ages
to scroll through all the HTML garbage in the digest. if people do not
understand why posting in HTML is bad news or understand how to switch their
mail client to plain text, then they really do not have a cats chance in
hell of doing anything 'tricky' like passing a CISCO cert!

i refer you to the guidelines for this list. the second part is also worth
noting as again people who do not understand how to edit emails are hoping
to become CISCO stars!

ian

'Always send messages in plain text, not HTML format. Not everyone has an
HTML enabled mail client.
Always edit your quoted replies to the bare essential. Do not quote the
entire message including the signature. This just waste bandwidth. '

Re: About ping on router

because my DNS server is outside of my router ,so i couldn't ping IP of DNS
server successfully, and I traced it ,but it just could reach the IP address
of my ddn provider's router, then no

Re: bridging analog phone service with Cisco VoIP

2000-07-29 Thread neal rauhauser

The voice over IP depends on the IP portion of the network working - just set
up the routers as you normally would and the voice traffic will travel just fine.

You do have a potential problem with congestion here, don't you? I am assuming
more than one type of data is using the area of the network that has the 4500s in
it.

This will be a good chance to exercise your cisco skills? Will IP precedence on
the 1750s do the job? Do you have to set up the 4500s to handle precedence as
well? Perhaps its a job for customer/priority queueing??

You'll have a wonderful learning experience with this ...

RE: 64 VLAN's in Catalyst 1900 switches??

2000-07-29 Thread Chuck

Now I am confused. I have been lurking here for some time. My Cisco
Products Guide says that the 1912 supports "up to four overlapping bridge
groups or 1024 ISL VLANs. Where did the "64" number come from? Do I
understand that the 1912 has support for four VLANs on its own and up to
1024 through ISL?

Thanks for the help understanding this.

RE: what i just saw...

2000-07-29 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Let's look at what is happening

With frame relay, you have a port speed and a committed information rate. If
the port speed is 128K, and the CIR is 16K, the following will happen when
you transmit data.

1) data will pass into the frame relay network at the full port speed.
2) The frame relay cloud ingress router marks all frames in excess of the
CIR as discard eligible.
3) If bandwidth is available, frames travel through the frame relay network
at whatever speed that link is provisioned for. If not, the frames are
dropped.

Several routing protocols - i.e. OSPF, EIGRP, IGRP - use "cost" as part of
the means of path determination. From a design standpoint one might have a
reason or two for preferring some paths over others. Let's say that I have
some servers in a co-location facility, and the co-lo charges for data
passed into and out of that facility, based upon fee plus charge for data
over a certain threshold on the line. I have my primary path in. I want all
traffic to use that path. But I want a backup path in case the primary
fails. My primary is frame relay with a port speed of 1.54 and a CIR of
500K. My backup is a frame relay with a port speed of 1.54 but a CIR of 0.
If the router sees two paths, both costing the same (using default settings,
it's 64 for OSPF, isn't it?) Depending upon the routing protocol, I could
end up sending traffic over the circuit with the 0 CIR and incur substantial
fees. So I use the bandwidth command to influence the router to prefer the
primary path over the secondary.

I'm sure there are many other situations in which one might want to do
similar things.

HTH

RE: what i just saw...

2000-07-29 Thread Olden Pieterse

Excellent explanation Chuck !!
I've never thought of it that way .
I forgot (using the frame relay example) that the total of all the lines'
CIR's together should be equal to the line speed at your primary interface .
for example 16k---}
16k---}serial0(64k)(((Router))
---16k---}
---16k---}

But now I have a serial line (hdlc) with a isdn as backup . Now if the
serial goes down then the isdn should kick in . Why would that bandwidth 8
then still be in there ? If the serial comes up again then the isdn goes
down .
I mean you can either use the dial backup command or floating static or
something like that . In essence , the cost (routerwise to determine the
path) factor is sorted out .
I agree that if there is money involved and you pay for the amount of data
that flows , its another story .
But under perfectly normal circumstances why would one do that ?
If you configure an isdn line and you do the bandwidth 8 statement , do you
only use 8k of that whole 64k line ? Or do you use streams of 8k on that 64k
line ?

I'm asking because I am not sure . Thanx for the patience !

Cheers
Olden

assign dhcp address on ethernet interface?

2000-07-29 Thread mickey_larson_2000

I want an Ethernet interface on a router to get
it's IP address for DHCP. Is this possible? How about on a PIX ethernet
interface?

I type debug but nutthin happens !!

2000-07-29 Thread Olden Pieterse

Hi all

I was under the impresion that if you are plugged in on the console , you
should see the debugs spewing on your screen if you do debug !
I did a debug on the serial & nothing happens ... So maybe nothing worthwile
does happen , but there must be !
Then I typed term mon . Usually thats only when you telnet hey ? And the
next thing I know here is all my debugging happening under my nose !
So if you debug and you see nothing and you feel silly , nobody would know ,
just do a term mon and it should come to you !

Hope it helps someone !

Re: Can two High density Serial ports be tied together? - YES!

2000-07-29 Thread neal rauhauser

Someone wrote to say that you use a null HSSI which is absolutely correct.
I'd like to add that the timing setup is tricky - if you just set clock rate
you'll see CDP making it from the DCE to the DTE device but you won't be able
to establish two way communications. There is also a 'hssi dce' or something
like that which must be set.

Not all Cisco HSSI ports are the same. I've had an easy time getting this to
work with a PA-H or PA-2H and a not so easy time getting it to go with a
CX-HIP.

Yep you can !
Do a ip helper address x.x.x.x on that interface and check which udp ports
you want to forward . There is eight and by default they are all on .

so its
int ethernet 0
ip adress x.x.x.x y.y.y.y
ip helper-address x.x.x.x
you can add this line ... ip forward-protocol udp

Port numbers are as follow :
tftp69
dns553
time37
netbios name service137
netbios datagram service 138
bootp server67
bootp client68
tacacs49

A good idea would be to add only the ones you need .

I also turn logging console of when I'm configuring routers so that I don't
see the messages. If you're connected the console more and aren't getting
and data try 'logging console'. It's also helpful to turn this off when
initially configuring a router so that you don't have all the interface up
messages, etc.

It would appear that your contact with the book has so befuddled you that
you've forgotten what a paragraph is.

You're right that there are some problems with the CCIE Lab Study Guide
but its a wonderful tool to have, all in all. I imagine the second version,
which I see is out on the shelves at Borders, goes a long way towards correcting
the deficiencies.

I've used the book, errors and all, and I completed 70+ labs before I went
off and started inventing my own stuff. I credit that book with getting me
through ACRC and I recommend it to anyone that is working on Cisco certs ...
wish I'd had it when I was doing the CCNA.

Adding those commands would forward dhcp requests, but would not allow an

Cisco
added a command 'ip address dhcp' in IOS 12.1(3)T.  I know this works on
the cable modem routers, but I'm not sure about ethernet.  Someone had

This is probably for a cable modem or DSL setup where you aren't assigned a
static address. You can use a 2 ethernet router to obtain an address for
one interface and connect to the other where you nat to the outside ethernet
address.

I've been getting a lot of requests from people asking me to email them the materials
from CCXX Productions. I only did this once for someone in Indonesia because he was
taking the test in a couple of days and CCXX doesn't accept international credit card
orders. I probably shouldn't have done it, but I just wanted to help him out. Anyway,
I can't email anyone the materials because I could get in trouble for doing it. Sorry.

Physical layer (was Re: a ccna question-help)

2000-07-29 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Four of the five (well, FR in some new specs for things like inverse
multiplexing) deal with the physical layer. Do remember, however,
that the original OSI definitions of layering came from a
telephony/WAN perspective, and did not consider LANs.

Their physical layer specification is, indeed, a protocol. Most
physical layer specifications do not actually define the
characteristics of the medium, although they do make assumptions
about the medium. But specifying the pulse shapes, clocking, etc.,
certainly is a protocol about how to use the medium.

Data link protocols, among other things, deal with the interactions
of multiple devices on a shared medium.

Physical protocols deal with the interactions of single devices with
a medium. For example, RS-232, RS-422/423, V.35, 10BaseT, 10Base5...

Medium specifications deal with the medium itself. Media are less
likely to be standardized by the same bodies that generate
higher-layer protocol specifications.

Re: Something I want to know but are not afraid anymore to as.....you guys & gals

2000-07-29 Thread lee

Hi, from what i understand is the 'bandwidth' command would not affect the
actual link. Basically. the 'bandwidth' command is an informational command
for each of the interfaces. If you don't put in 'bandwidth', you wouldn't
able to get the accurate load statistic of the interface. For example, for
the serial interface, the default bandwidth is T1 (1.544Mbps), if the actual
link is 64Kbps and you configured the serial interface without 'bandwidth'
command, sure you get 1/255 load on the interface all the time, eventhough
the link is very congest.

Another functionality of 'bandwidth' command is you can use this command to
choose the prefer route that you want if you have multiple path to the same
destination. Some dynamic routing protocol is using 'bandwidth' as the
metric, like EIGRP, OSPF, etc.

Sorry for my bad english. Hope it can help you out.

lee

if you're taking the exam in (4) weeks and you plan on using that this
late
in the game, FORGET it! Go and buy Marc Russell's labs
(www.ccbootcamp.com). That's what I used to pass the CCIE exam!!!

The All-in-one Lab Study Guide is great for a starting point (3-6 months
prior to the lab exam). After that, you need some REAL labs!

Usage Guidelines

Note The bandwidth command sets an informational parameter only to
communicate the current bandwidth to the higher-level protocols; you cannot
adjust the actual bandwidth of an interface with this command.

For some media, such as Ethernet, the bandwidth is fixed; for other media,
such as serial lines, you can change the actual bandwidth by adjusting
hardware. For both classes of media, you can use the bandwidth configuration
command to communicate the current bandwidth to the higher-level protocols.

IGRP uses the minimum path bandwidth to determine a routing metric. The TCP
protocol adjusts initial retransmission parameters based on the apparent
bandwidth of the outgoing interface.

At higher bandwidths, the value you configure with the bandwidth command is
not what is displayed by the show interface command. The value shown is that
used in IGRP updates and also used in computing load.

Note This is a routing parameter only; it does not affect the physical
interface.

Examples

The following example sets the full bandwidth for DS3 transmissions:

Router(config)# interface serial 0
Router(config-if)# bandwidth 44736
--

as you can see, the command merely communicates information to higher level
protocols, usually meaning routing protocols, which would use the
information for path determination.

Hope it can help you out.

lee

Neal,
Before you reply to posts on this list maybe you should read them more
than once so that you can fully understand their meaning. When I wrote that
post I was in no way downing the author. I was just giving some people
something to think about. If you had read what I wrote (really read it) then
you would have seen that I loved all of the mistakes because I thought they
taught how to troubleshoot at a higher level.
Here you are telling people that they should get the fixes for the book
when the mistakes actually make it better. So before you decide to "flame"
someone on their opinions, ideas, and the way that they write
paragraphs...maybe you should learn how to read and understand what someone
is trying to say. By the way, I made some paragraphs for you, do you feel
better now Neal. Please lets not let this go any further. We're here to learn
not flame.

Thanks ..

1) The passing score for CCNA-R/S is 822
2) 65 questions and 105 min.
3) About the practice test .. i only used the CD that comes with the CCNA
640-507 Guide (Cisco Press) but you should have the ICND (Cisco press too)
.. i went to the 640-507 (using the ICRC book) i fall for 6 points, then i
went to the 640-407 (Need ICRC) i took 841/1000 (passing score is 755!!)
time is 90 min about 78 questions.
If you have the time to take the 640-407 before the end of july 2000 .. go
for it .. low passing score (755) ...
About the practice test (i think i could not help you with names of
softwares !! i am sorry ..)
Thanks again :)

TR supports multicast !!

2000-07-29 Thread Mohammed Hakim

Hello group,

About my last question: Does the Token Ring (IEEE
802.5) support Multicasts (sending packets to a group of devices)
..
I have two answre saying yes, i have asked an CCIE
.. he told me:

TR does not do multicast, IBM or IEEE. It does
use functional addresses kinda like multicast, butthere's a verylimited set
of these. IOS doc from Cisco on HSRP on Token Ring has some related
material.

Now i have 2 answers .. any one can help
..

..!!)

Second: about the question which is faster a Switch
is faster then the Bridge .. let say the a the switch is using the
Store-and-forward method and it is in a large network (the switch) it have many
ports .. but the Bridge only like a real bridge that connect two points !! .. Is
the bridge are old fashion or extinct ??

Third: About the Does the Token Ring (IEEE 802.5)
support Multicasts as I said before in the ICRC book page 59 it said it support
Multicasts .. but another book the CCNA 640-507 Guide (New book) at page 721
question number 22 it said that: (( Multicast is not allowed on Token Ring;
broadcast is allowed on all LAN types ..etc)) I have finished the CCNA but I
need to know is the Token Ring for IBM is different From the IEEE 802.5 or what
?? Another thing is it true that I new Token Ring will be ready with 3 Gb/sec
ore more .. and idea.

**Last question if any one can help (general):
about the Nortel Certification .. Any one have the NNCNA the Nortel Networks Certified Network Architect (NNCNA) if
yes .. is it equal to the CCIE or even higher as the company (nortel say it) ..
To have it you need to have many certification and if you have an CCIE you will
have about 150 point (need about 500 or 550 point) but there certification Nortel Networks Certified Design Expert (NNCDE) if you have it you get about 150 or 200 (more than if you have
an CCIE !!) the ACSE (Alcatel) you have 150 points if you have MCSE you have
75!! and if you have CCNA you get 50 points !! .. you need to have many
certification 5 years exp. + 2 years in network design ... then you go to stage
2 test !!!  the strange is
that the MCSE give more points than CCNA but many say that the CCNA is higher
than the MCSE (there is about +25 world wind MCSE .. in the MCSE2000 about
70-80% will go off !!) any idea ..!! is it good for a job to have many Network
certifications from (Cisco, Norte, Lucent, 3Com, Alcatel .. etc)

Thanks for your help .. :)

Just a note to thank you for all your help. The test was harder than I
expected. 78 questions/90 minutes. I got a 841/1000. I used the sybex and
cisco practice test to help prepare but found them not to helpful on the
real test. Most questions are multiple answer form and all expect you to
understand the concepts of what the questions are asking.

Now I am onto the CCNP any suggestions on books to use to study would be
most appreciated.

CCNP/CCDP certification finally obtained for this Vancouverite

2000-07-29 Thread Tuline, Andrew

Well, I've finally passed my last 2 exams to obtain my CCNP and CCDP
certifications. I thought I'd post a bit of information on how I did this,
and what my current role at work is.

The study material I used was:

- Lots of CiscoPress books,
- Some Sybex books,
- Some Syngress books,
- Network Study Guides and other questions/study notes obtained on various
web sites.

I have a Palm Pilot (actually a Handspring) and would like to have used Palm
based study notes and questions. I believe the Sybex CID book had a subset
of questions that were on the CD for the Palm.

My web site www.tuline.eu.org has my books listed.

The order of exams I took was:

CCNA - Used Sybex book, and course material, studied hard and got 94%
(really like the Sybex),
CCDA - Used CID book, course material, and didn't do nearly as well (wished
I'd had the CCDA book),
ACRC - Used CiscoPress and Sybex, took a long time and did reasonable
(didn't like the Sybex book),
CMTD - CiscoPress and course material, was very motivated to learn this, and
got 93%,
CLSC - CiscoPress, and did reasonable (wished I'd had some actual switches
to play with),
CID - Used CiscoPress, Sybex, was overconfident, and squeaked through,
CIT - Used CiscoPress, Syngress, studied for only 3 weeks, and did
reasonable.

Since I'm a department manager, and have kids, most of my study time was
spent on the subway (we call it Skytrain) to and from work. Additionally, I
don't currently get a lot of hands on time, so I'll not be pursuing CCIE for
the time being. I'm not interested in selling any of my books or course
material, as I'll be using them for reference and probably for CCNP 2.0 down
the road.

My role is manager of corporate systems support for an 800 employee
organization, and I provide technical support of our Frame Relay network of
15+ sites. This frame network is using point-multipoint and EIGRP.
Additionally, our WAN also includes a couple of point to point links, as
well as a recently installed ISDN site. We're going to be adding some Cisco
switches to our branch LAN in October, so I hope to get some decent switch
experience. I also occasionally consult to our clients in the area of
network design and implementation.

Re: VPNS/access-list question

2000-07-29 Thread Paul Schultz

There's two things you need to allow for MS PPTP (I assume that's what
you're using.)

Port 1723 tcp, and either GRE (protocol 47) for NT4 or IPSec (protocol
50) for Win2k. I know NT4 uses GRE and this setup will work, but I've
heard Win2k has an option to use IPSec instead. Either way allow
whichever one you decide to use on your VPN server.

access-list 105 permit tcp any host X.X.X.X eq 1723
access-list 105 permit gre any host X.X.X.X (Use this if you're using
PPTP with GRE)

access-list 105 permit 50 any host X.X.X.X(use this for PPTP with
IPSec)

802.3 frame and full-duplex

2000-07-29 Thread Stephen Ede

I have 2 questions to submit here...

1) If there are several nodes attached to a 10/100 switch, and all NICs are
in full duplex mode, this means that CSMA/CD is not in effect, loopback is
turned off, and any station can transmit and receive concurrently. But what
happens when 2 or 3 of these stations want to transmit to one particular
station concurrently? Is the traffic buffered in the switch? Or is CSMA/CD
still in effect, even in full duplex mode, where they will sense the wire
and wait if busy?

2) In the diagram below of an 802.3 frame, what does the "SD" potion
signify?

| Preamble | SD | Dest. Add. | Source Add. | Length | DSAP | SSAP | Control
| Data | FCS |

Thank you in advance.

OSPF Demand Circuit - About to go crazy! :-)

they sucessfully exchange databases. R2 is configured the same as R1 with
the exception of the ip ospf demand-circuit, it does not have that

demand-circuit.I can ping between R1 and R2's BRI interfaces to bring up
the ISDN link, and it works properly, however, if I shut the Frame Relay
interface down, shouldn't the ISDN link come up as both links are in area 0?

RE: OSPF Demand Circuit - About to go crazy! :-)

2000-07-29 Thread Aaron K. Dixon

It looks like you mistyped the ospf statements in router 2. Under the ospf
process you specify addresses that have the 2nd octet of .39 when the
interfaces have a second octet of .36. A good way to verify that your
interfaces coincide with your ospf configuration is to do a 'sh ip ospf
int'. This will allow you to verify that the interfaces are configured for
opsf and then you can go into troubleshooting neighbor relationships.

Re: OSPF Demand Circuit - About to go crazy! :-)

2000-07-29 Thread Ryan Moffett

I apologize, the ip ospf network statements in my routers are correct:

network 10.36.18.6 0.0.0.0 area 0
network 10.36.19.6 0.0.0.0 area 0
!

I attempted to write down the config from memory and my previous post was
erraneous.

In any case, sh ip ospf int on both routers shows that OSPF is running on
both the Frame Relay and ISDN interfaces and on R1 the ISDN interface shows
that it is running as a demand circuit. The problem is that it will never
establish an adjacency over the frame-relay link, nor attempt to. If I
shut the Frame Relay interface down, the ISDN interface doesn't come up, and
even if I attempt to "nail-up" the ISDN connection so that it is always up,
adjacencies will not form. I debug ip ospf adjacency, and nothing happens.
Both routers can ping each other over the ISDN link, I can make RIP, IGRP,
EIGRP and BGP talk over the ISDN connection, however OSPF still fails...

Frame Relay config on Ethernet interface?

2000-07-29 Thread Cesar D'Suze Scott

Hi
Guys.

I was just
looking at the help results on a ethernet interface, and it shows up some
frame relay related commands. Between them is arp frame-relay,
frame-relay intf-type nni, etc.

Does it
means that I can simulate a Frame-Relay Switch over an ethernet
interface?. I think it's a crazy question, but with all of these "X
over Y" features in the Cisco Routers, maybe this can be done.

I did the
"arp frame-relay", but when I try to put an frame-relay
intf-type dce, it shows up the following message:

%Ethernet0 :Frame Relay not configured on interface

Does
anyone has tried this stuff?. It really could help me if it works,
because I can use 2 2501 routers as a FR Switch with 2 interfaces (what a
dreamer :).

Some of
the routers of the lab has the frame-relay commands, but some of them
not. Even some of the with 11.3 does not have it.

I really
think this can't be done, but with all of these commands I get confused.

Well,
thanks in advance for your help. Below is the output of what I did.

Bye.

César Enrique

2000-07-29 Thread Jim Bond

Hello,

I'm so tired of working 60-70 hours a week; I'm so
tried of paying $3,500 mortgage per month for a 1,300
sqf home; I'm so tired of driving on that crowed
highway (if you consider 5MPH is high). I'm thinking
moving out of silicon valley bay area.

Where, in US, can I find a place that is not cold in
winter, not hot in summer, no too much snow, no too
much rain, IT job market not too bad? I know it's
difficult to find such a place, but close?

Thanks in advance.

RE: OSPF Demand Circuit - About to go crazy! :-)

2000-07-29 Thread Aaron K. Dixon

Try using the broadcast command in your dialer map commands.

ie.

dialer map ip 10.36.19.6 broadcast

RE: unable to upgrade image to 2514

2000-07-29 Thread Aaron K. Dixon

On a 2500 you should see reload requested. You can't put an image with the
router running unless it's in boot mode or you have your flash partitioned.
The 2500 runs from flash so it reloads the router in boot mode and tries to
copy the flash. Across what medium does the router reach the tftp server?
Some things don't work well in boot mode depending on the version of your
boot rom's. What version of boot rom's do you have? Can you send a sh
version?

Try manually putting your router in boot mode. ie change config-reg to
0x2101 and rebooting the router. Then ensure that you have connectivity to
your tftp server. If you do then you can load a new image without the
reload.

Aaron K. Dixon

Serial Cables for AGS+

2000-07-29 Thread Patrick Murphy

I have an AGS+ that I am using for my CCIE lab? I
only have one problemI don't have any serial cables for it!

I have 12 serial ports  - 2 are DB-25 types (
I have DCE cables for these!)

I need to find some of those "other"
cables?

Thanks in advance

Re: OSPF Demand Circuit - About to go crazy! :-)

2000-07-29 Thread Ryan Moffett

Well, that nailed up the ISDN connection for good, but OSPF adjacencies
still did not form

I had to change my dialer map statements to dialer string statements...

dialer string on R1
dialer string on R3

...and it magically worked.now, why? Why did it have a problem with
the dialer map ip statements? I will try to figure that out, but at least
I know now what I need to do in this scenario.

Sounds like you have flow control enabled on the PC port you're using to

I think the easiest way to find out if he contributed to the list is to

RingLord, I just realized I didnt answer all your questions...

Post anything useful? Uh, yeah, actually I have, check out my website for a
great deal on routers (www.optsys.net) :)Have you ever posted anything
at all besides this post of yours?

Am I affiliated (sp) with CCBootCamp? Yup, sure am! I thought they are
AWESOME since I used them to pass my CCIE LAB, so why not get involved with
a good thing???

This list is about certifications and studying. What's a better way to
study than with terrific labs and a rack of your own??? Did I mention,
that's what I did to get my CCIE?

Meaningful goal in life: Help others pass their CCIE. I know it was a
nightmare for me, so Im just trying to make it easier on the people that
subscribe to this list. What's wrong with that?

Does that help? Let me know if you have anymore questions. If you need a
kit for your CCNA, Im sure I can help you out.

Thanks!

Re: 29xx switch

2000-07-29 Thread Jeffrey Humphreys

 Rayza,

It would seem strange that you are having collisions on FastEthernet0/7 yet
it is set to Full Duplex. Did you change the duplex settings and not clear
the counters ? Do you have a problem that you are troubleshooting or is
this just a test :-)

Jim,

Don't come to St. Louis, Mo. It's hot and humid in the summer, cold in
snowy in the winter, and it floods in the Spring. However, for $3500 per
month you could get a mansion with a pool. I'm talking a 3000 - 3500 sq ft
house and we even have basements :-)

Re: where do live

2000-07-29 Thread John Hardman

The silicon desert! Phoenix.

8 months of "to die for" weather. 4 months of nasty hot, but you are in IT
and work inside ;-) Lots of recreation opurtunities (lakes, golf, hiking,
etc), lots of culture wild and conservitive. Pro teams of all kinds.

Lots of big companies have headquarters here, call centers, and lots of med
sized and start-ups too.

Traffic is not too bad, depending on where you live vs. where you work and
the schedule you have. I live 25 miles from work and have a 9 ish to 6 ish
schedule, it rarely takes me more than 30 mins either way.

For $3500 a month on house you could be in a very nice 4000+ Sqft house on a
very nice golf course.

If you have senior Cisco and/or UNIX and/or Oracle skills then you will like
find work right away.

Re: 802.3 frame and full-duplex

2000-07-29 Thread Jeffrey Humphreys

Stephen,

First, SD is the last octet of the preamble. You get 7 octets of 0x55 and
the final octet is 0xD5 which is signaling the start of the Data Link frame,
hence SD.

On the switch question, if port A,B, and C are sending packets to port D I
think that the output queue on D would accumulate the packets if the offered
load is greater than the link's capacity. However, the queue is not
infinite and eventually you will have to start dropping packets.

Hi Aaron
Thanks for your reply, but I did the same upgrade to my 2501,and it's
working .
the tftp server is connected through the ethernet port while it's not
accessible to tftp server due to the lose of configure after the reload

give a upgrade is now losing its NVRAM info every time it is reloaded or
power on/off, I think that's why the router is not accessible to the tftp
server anymore after the reload during the upgrade---because my 2514 can not
'remember' the startup-configuration !! How am i gonna do now .

Do you know how many pins are there for a 16M memory for cisco 2501/2514,
coz i was asked this question when in the computer shop .and for a 16M
configuration, according to cisco, it's possible to us proven vendor memory
like Samsun but can any one interpret what the following mean:
  Cisco specified:
16 MB (4 MB x 36, 70 ns DRAM SIMM)
 Hitachi HB56D436SBR-7AGS
 Hyundai HYM536410M-70
 Mitsubishi MH4M36ANXJ-7
 NEC MC-424000A36BE-70
 Samsung KMM5364100A-70

above are the approved model of 16M memory ,
what doese 4 MB x 36 mean?

RE: unable to upgrade image to 2514

2000-07-29 Thread Aaron K. Dixon

Try the method that I listed about booting in boot mode and then doing the
upgrade. If you're in boot mode a reload won't be necessary. Are you sure
that you're config-reg is set correctly. If it's set to 0x2142 the
configuration will be ignored upon reload. If you do a show start the
config will be there, but not in a show run. Could you send a show ver?

RE: 2500 flash and RAM

2000-07-29 Thread Aaron K. Dixon

They use 72-pin SIMMs. The x36 represents parity memory. 72 pin SIMMs
provide 32 data bite per cycle plus 4 parity bits which equals 36 bits.
Non-parity SIMMs would be represented by x32. The 4 is a representation of
the 4 DRAM chips that make-up a 16MB SIMM.

Aaron K. Dixon

Subject: Re: 2500 flash and RAM
