Re: what is mean by EIR on the frame relay???

2000-08-02 Thread Chris McCoy

CT,

Router B's data carrier detect (DCD) signal is down. This is the source
of the message 'serial interface is down'. I would say your DSU/CSU or DCE
device is not receiving a good signal from the distant end. Try a local
loop on the DCE and see if your router interface comes up looped. If the
loop isn't good, you could have faulty wiring or bad DCE.

EIR is the Excess Information Rate. This, plus the Committed
Information Rate (CIR), is the absolute maximum you can transmit packets
without the service provider possibly dropping your packets, even when
congestion is not present.

completed CCNA.. now onto CCDA.. any book recommendations?

2000-08-02 Thread Luther

Hi, I posted before and was wondering what books to get for CCDA... I used
the following books to study CCNA v1.0:

1) Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices - Cisco Press
2) CCNA Study Guide - Sybex

Someone recommended me purchasing:

1) Top Down Network Design - Cisco Press
2) CCDA Study Guide - Sybex

.. for CCDA.

Can anyone further recommend these or other books?
I particularily like Cisco Press books in favour of Sybex.

Thanks for any help forwarded!
Luther.

Might you mean CIR? Committed information rate?

Is this a circuit that has worked in the past and stopped, or a new turn-up?
The answer to this question can cause a different approach to troubleshooting.

Assuming frame-relay encaps because you mentioned frame-relay in question 1...
>
> router A
> interface is up and protocol is down
> modem status is DCD=up DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=up

The physical circuit to the router is OK. It _probably_ is talking to the
frame-relay switch OK, especially if the circuit has worked in the past and
just quit. The DCD=up and CTS=up show that the physical layer is good, or
at least connected.

If "sho int" contains a line like:
LMI enq sent 209473, LMI stat recvd 209473, LMI upd recvd 0, DTE LMI up

then the "DTE LMI up" verifies that this router is good to the switch.

"sho frame pvc" should show the DLCI as USAGE = LOCAL and STATUS = ACTIVE
for the DLCI of the circuit between the two routers if everything is happy.
If the remote router is not happy, then you'll see STATUS = INACTIVE. If the
PVC isn't built in the switch, you'll see STATUS = DELETED or nothing at
all for that DLCI if you're using inarp.
>
> but at the router B,
> the interface is down and protocol is down,
> the modem status is DCD=down DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=down.

This router or its CSU/DSU if external is not communicating with the
frame-relay switch. Look for trouble on the physical wiring to this
router. In the real world, this is almost always a telephone company
issue. In a lab, it could be a bad or miswired cable.

> What is likely the cause of the problem?

A tech at the telco closest to router B looped its NIU while mis-reading
a circuit ID trying to fix something else. (That's the most likely cause,
but don't expect to find it on the test.)

> Is that the modem of router B got
> problem or serial port of router B got problem or the link within the
> service provider got problem

If this is a previously working circuit, it's most likely a telco issue
between the frame-relay switch and router B. A loopback plug on the line
to the CSU (1-4, 2-5 for T1, 1-7, 2-8 for 56K) cusing DCD to go "up" will
isolate it.

Note: Telephone companies are notorious for blaming the customer and
looping the wrong circuit. Carry a loopback plug in your tool kit. When
telco claime "It's good to the NIU", plug your loopback plug into their
smartjack and ask them to run to it. Unplug it and see if the loop goes
down.

In the real world, if a circuit has been working fine for months or years
and suddenly quits, what has probably happened is that a telco tech, in
the process of troubleshooting something else, accidentally hopped on to
your circuit and put a smartjack in loopback. When you call in to report
the problem, they'll test things and knock down the loop that they put
up by mistake earlier. Then it will work again, and get closed out as
another "came clear while testing." The second most likely cause is that
someone clipped a butt-set on your data pair which wasn't documented
correctly, didn't hear dial tone, and swiped it for something else. This
takes longer to fix, but telco will still probably claim "came clear
while testing" even though they know better. A lot depends on the competence
of your local telephone company.

Hint: If they are spending millions of dollars right now on a massive,
saturation TV ad campaign just to announce that they're changing their
name while under the threat of a labor strike, then perhaps they have their
priorities wrong.

Re: FastEtherchannel configuration

2000-08-02 Thread Chris McCoy

Hi David,

This is an interesting problem. I do have a couple of questions about it:

1) Are you using trunking between the 6009 & the 3500's with VLANs?
2) Do you have VTP pruning turned on in the 6009?

The IOS-based Cisco switches have a nasty habit of not working with VTP
pruning, causing the 6009 to shut off VLANs to a switch. It's quite
possible this is what's happening.

what is mean by EIR on the frame relay???

2000-08-02 Thread Sim, CT (Chee Tong)

Dear all,

Thank for your guide, I know I will try to put the gateway of PC A to be IP
of PC B

However, I would like to ask you

1)what is mean by EIR on the Frame relay? Can any one tell me?

2)If I found the link is up between two router,

router A
interface is up and protocol is down
modem status is DCD=up DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=up

but at the router B,
the interface is down and protocol is down,
the modem status is DCD=down DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=down.

What is likely the cause of the problem? Is that the modem of router B got
problem or serial port of router B got problem or the link within the
service provider got problem

Nt Callback

2000-08-02 Thread Bruce H

I am trying to get an NT workstation client to get a callback from an access
server (5200).
Is there any specific configurations of the Dial Up Networking I need to
setup?
I have tried many things unchecked/checked the LCP optionNo chap just
pap etc
A windows 95 laptop can obtain a callback but I need NT to work.
If anyone knows how to do this I would really appreciate it.
I have seen similar postings but no answer for NT client.
Thanks, Bruce

Tokenring-to-Ethernet address conversion (long)

2000-08-02 Thread Roger Dellaca

I have found a way to memorize the Token-to-ethernet (& back) address conversion - if
you like it, great, if not, ignore it. You probably won't like it unless you really
liked math in school.

So we know that you have to bit-flip each byte, and we know that if each byte is
written as 2 hex digits, then you can swap each pair of hex digits in the byte & flip
each hex digit (example: flipping 7D as a byte is binary 0111 1101 flipped to 1011
1110 which is BE - doing it by the hex digit is 7D swapped to D7, D flips to B & 7
flips to E so it's BE). Now how do you memorize the flip for each hex digit?

THE 1st SIX PRIME NUMBERS (2,3,5,7,11,13) !!!

1st - powers of 2: they are 1,2,4,8 (0 is not a power of 2, it's a multiple; & 16 is
higher than a single hex digit) they flip with each other in high-low pairs, so 1 & 8
flip to each other, & 2 & 4 flip to each other.

2nd - multiples of 3,5,7 (and the 4 magic flips): the multiples of 3 are 0,3,6,9,C
(12), and F (15). 0,6,9 & F are the magic flips - they are the same when flipped(
Remember 4 magic flips for a 4-bit hex digit). The others are 3 & C which flip to each
other. The multiples of 5 are 5 and A (I skipped 0 & F because we already touched them
with the 3's), and they flip to each other. The multiples of 7 are 7 & E, which flip
to each other.

3rd & finally - B (11) and D (13) are all that are left & they flip to each other.

There!

(By the way, for anyone that hasn't fallen asleep yet, the reason for 4 magic flips
isn't because of the 4 digits in a hex number - that's just a mnemonic. Technically,
a magic flip is where you divide the number of digits in half & each half is a mirror
image, so 4 bits divided by 2 is 2, and there are 4 possibilities in a 2-bit number.)

CCIE R/S written question

2000-08-02 Thread Daniel Ji

Hi, Cisco buddies:

I'm scheduling to take the CCIE R/S written in 2 weeks, after 4 months of
hard preparation, still wondering one question:
Did the CCIE written tell you how many correct answers there are as in CCNP
tests or you would have to decide by yourself?

Any comments will be greatly appreciated!!

Good luck to all!

new Cisco 2650/2651 model

I thought someone might be interested in this. A new model in the 2600
series. Looks like the main difference is much faster packet throughput

daveh

=>MODULAR MULTISERVICE ROUTER BRINGS MORE POWER TO BRANCH OFFICES
The Cisco 2650 modular multiservice routers offer higher
performance and memory to enable more intelligent network
services at the branch office. Branch offices incorporating Web
and e-commerce solutions depend on multiple services, such as
virtual private networks (VPNs), integrated voice and data, and
business applications that are latency-sensitive and bandwidth-
intensive. The Cisco 2650 series is ideal for meeting the
increased performance needs with more than 10 times the
performance of traditional branch office platforms. Available
as a single-port or dual-port autosensing 10/100 Mbps Ethernet,
the Cisco 2650 and 2651 maintains the flexibility and
versatility of the popular Cisco 2600 family with options from
more than 50 network modules and interface cards.

RE: Conflicting answers

2000-08-02 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

>the transport layer provides flow control.

There routinely is flow control at transport (e.g., TCP) and in data
link protools (e.g., LAP-B). Cisco also tends to call source quench
(the use of which is deprecated) and buffering "flow control," but
these mechanisms are not true flow control.

Flow control implies the receiver has an feedback mechanism back to
the sender. Explicit flow control includes mechanisms such as the
RNR frame in SDLC or LAP-B, while TCP uses implicit flow control
based on not receiving ACKs (or receiving delayed ACKs).

Congestion control is really the broader term, which includes flow
control, proactive and reactive queueing, etc.

RE: Thank you list

2000-08-02 Thread Anna Janowska

Thanks Chuck

I will research your suggestions in the next little
while, I will take CCND exams in August and then lab
and lab only. I am so lucky to have the gear and such
a strong support from my company. I think there is
always a little bit of trade off with everything, my
pay can use an improvement, but I am not complaining,I
consider myself very fortunate.

The books I have use to prepare for this exam were:

All in one CCIE Study Guide by Roosevelt Gilles -
first three chapters, pices from the rest of it, you
can't say it is not in detail.

Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIE by A. B.
Carslow
not in depth but read needed pices, will read for the
lab over and over untill I got the carma.

Routing TCP/IP volume I by Jeff Doyle
Cover to cover reads like a novell, although, I can't
say I still remember how novell reads or is it novel.

The most help was from good soul and friend Jean van
Eeden who lend me CCIE Prep kit - you can get one on
the Amazon.com, it is 400 pages summary, it does not
go too deep into subjects and it is not enough to read
just that but it is great to read it just a week
before a big day, it has all that is required on the
test ( but as I mentioned not enough detail to pass).
Jean also offered a great support as a friend and that
is priceless.

You will also need to know RIF in and out I mean you
will need to translate the RIF and know cannonical to
non-cannonical translation of MAC ( ether to token).

There is also a big brother cisco with all you need to
know and it was big help to me.

A groupstudy list is just priceless in tips on books
and where to find stuff, it takes so much time to
search for stuff I know because I started CCNP track
without being hooked up to this list and I can say it
made a huge difference in how fast I am progressing in
my cert. and how much it cost me.

I hope it helps, I did not post the details of my prep
before because it seems as it was already done,
frankly I followed the mailings from others who pass
CCIE written.

Good luck with your study, Anna

RE: Boson test for BCRAN???

2000-08-02 Thread Michael W. Oliver

Yeah, I used them. They are pretty good at testing your knowledge, but on
my test, I didn't see too much that matched up. In addition, the second
BCRAN/CMTD test pack had many of the same questions as the first
one...some were word-for-word. If you buy the first one and do well,
there is really no reason to spend another $30 for the second (IMHO).

One down, three to go...

2000-08-02 Thread Michael W. Oliver

Thanks to everyone on the list for the daily dose of real-life experiences. While
there weren't many that helped me pass the BCRAN yesterday, they help none the less.
There are too many individuals to thank each one, but I would like to send a shout out
to Chuck Larrieu, Joe Martin, Howard Berkowitz, Priscilla, and the many others that
make this list great.

On to the BCMSN...

(I only post the letters the day after the exam...)

Re: Has anyone heard of NDM

2000-08-02 Thread Peter Simmons

Steve,

This sounds like Sterling Software's Network Data Mover (NDM), later known
as Connect:Direct. Sterling have been bought out by CA, so try looking at
www.ca.com for more info. CA have a product called CA:XCOM which does much
the same sort of thing, it could have been dropped in favour of this, you'll
need to dig around to find out what happened to it after the merger.

It is a file transfer package, with a scheduler and scripting tool,
originally used in a mainframe (SNA) environment, later enhaced for TCP/IP
trnasfers. It has NO benefit over FTP in terms of performance, but the bonus
is the script/schedule toollkit, which can be integrated into an MVS, UNIX
or NT environment (AFAIR), and includes hooks into things like OPCA, JES,
RJE etc.

I haven't seen it for a few years, but I recall it was reasonably OK, it had
a client that ran on OS/2 for SNA MF-PC transfers, and was a sod to get
running properly, but once it was running it ran forever. I saw the TCP/IP
version a few years ago, and thought it was OK, but I wasn't too interested
in the product at the time.

Hope this helps!

Regards

Pete S.

OK, I see how the bandwidth vs. clockrate could be confusing, when I
used shorthand. You are also correct you need a fast rate for TFTP.
Nevertheless, a slow rate does help see debug.

RE: Cisco employment ???

2000-08-02 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Although there are differing opinions, I come down on the side of Nick
Corcodilos ( Ask the Headhunter, www.asktheheadhunter.com ) that it is not
a good idea to just nail your resume onto telephone poles and hope for the
best. By doing so you have lost control of how you are presented to hiring
managers. Not to mention the potential conflict should a hiring manager get
your resume from both sources that are free and sources that work on
commission.

I know that in these days of hotjobs and monster.com and such that it is
tempting to just post wildly, with no thought. The idea is that the more
eyes that see, the better the chance for interviews. In the end, though, you
may just be contributing to the noise level that does much to prevent us
from finding the jobs of our dreams. May want to check out Nick's opinions
prior to doing things like this.

Just my opinion. Others disagree.

Chuck

Just so it is clear, IKE does not replace ISAKMP. ISAKMP is an open
framework for Key Management. IKE uses parts of the ISAKMP framework to
create SA's and exchange key info. Mainly the Skeme and Oakley protocols
that follow ISAKMP.

I'm new to the list as of a week ago and I mostly wanted to just stay quiet
and absorb what I could. There's a lot more to all of this than I ever
thought. I'll be shooting for my CCNA(and other certs) as soon as I can get

Paul,

Thanks for your response. IKE (Internet Key Exchange) formerly Internet
Security Association and Key Management Protocol (ISAKMP), is an encryption
protocol. The port number is 500 (which I obtained thanks to the input of
other members). If you want to read more about it go to this link:

Technically ICMP isn't a part of the process layer in IP, it's a part of the
IP layer itself and doesn't use a port number but rather an IP 'type'.
ICMP's protocol code within IP itself is 0x01.
As far as the other two are concerned I know nothing about. Never heard of
IKE and am not familiar enough with IPSec to know.

Help with Debug ip packet

Hello group,
Can some kind soul help with the following output I
got for "IP debug packet"

IP: s=172.16.5.59 (Serial0), d=172.17.5.100
(Ethernet0), g=172.17.5.100, len 40,
 forward

Does "g" stand for gateway, and if so then why is that
the same as destination and not the actual
gateway/router which in this case is 172.17.5.10

What does "len 40" mean ?

Re: Nooo! I failed! what now?

Hey Al,

It looks to me like you were studying from an older 407 exam prep book.
Cisco added quite a few WAN and Switch questions to the 407 test pool late
last year. Check the publisher's web site for errata and updates. I got a
large Chapter 11 update from the Sybex site for my 407 Study book that had a
great deal of WAN stuff in it that the original book did not cover. The
errata sheet also had fixes for the review questions that didn't seem quite
right.

Since it's now after July 31, 2000, you'll have to take the 507 CCNA 2.0
test. You did good to buy the two study books. I would also invest in a
Boson practice test.

if you type a "?" in user mode on a Cisco router, you will see all of the
possible commands.  when you see the command you need, type {command-name ?}
and you
will get a list of the next words needed... Do this until you have your

This is real basic, but I hope it helped!

Yeah that is what we do alot to check out code before we launch it in
production. Always TFTPing for a new IOS.
You throw me when you said 56 or 64 cause clockrate is expressed in bits not

I didnt get any sniffer training in CIT, all trouble shooting was done with

A good source would be Sniffer University @ Network Associates

FLASH upgrade question

I'm going to be adding 8 MB of FLASH to a 2520 that already has 8 MB. Will
adding the new SIMM cause me to lose the IOS image currently residing in the
existing SIMM? I suppose this is a moot question because I'll be upgrading
the IOS immediately afterward, but I'm curious about this.

Conflicting answers

2000-08-02 Thread Bob Edmonds

I have an html file with some CCNA study notes on it and it describes one
aspect of the Data-link layer as so:

***Data Link
Layer*

Provides Flow control -- Flow control involves moderating the transmission
of data so that the receiving device is not overwhelmed with more traffic
than it can handle at one time.

*
But while I was taking a CCIE practice test at cisco.com I encountered this
question and answer to a question:

Q: Some disadvantages of bridging versus routing are: (more than one answer)

A. Bridges cannot provide any form of flow control.
B. Bridges cannot provide congestive feedback information to end nodes.
C. Bridges offer no form of filtering.
D. Bridges are more difficult to administer/maintain than routers.
E. Bridges create more overhead traffic than routers.

Answer = A&B. Flow Control and Congestive Feedback are functions of the
Network layer. As bridges operate at the Data Link layer, these
responsibilities fall to the end stations in a bridged environment.

So my questions is which layer provides flow control?

Christophe,
The 2M serial link will handle the telnet traffic. All that is sent
during telnet is keyboard and video characters. All processing is done on
the remote machine, therefore there won't be any paging traffic, etc. If
all file & print services are provided locally, then you should be just
fine.

Yes, as far as I can tell. I may be missing something though. On my

interface FastEthernet0/1
 duplex full
 speed 100
 port group 1
 switchport mode trunk
 spanning-tree portfast
!
interface FastEthernet0/2
 duplex full
 speed 100
 port group 1
 switchport mode trunk
 spanning-tree portfast

ICMP's protocol code within IP itself is 0x01.
As far as the other two are concerned I know nothing about. Never heard of
IKE and am not familiar enough with IPSec to know.

No, while I do agree setting bandwidth is a good habit to get into, I
did mean clockrate. The only reason I would set that high a
clockrate in a lab is if I was going to do TFTP downloads across the

Re: CCNP 2.0 Test order

2000-08-02 Thread Kevin Wigle

I respectfully disagree.

It depends on your previous Cisco networking knowledge.

The Support 2.0 (CIT) is not an exam to take up front. It builds on all the
other subject material in the other exams.

Same as CID, It builds on the knowledge gained from the earlier exams.

In the ver 1.0 there was some overlap between ACRC and CMTD, I can't comment
on the new version 2.0 exams.

Leave Support 2.0 (CIT) to last, the rest probably can be done in any order.

Magnanimous,philanthropic, benevolent nature of NE's

2000-08-02 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Hi everybody
I live in a small town (2000+ people) in rural North Central
PA (Smethport). The free public library in town is very nice but short on funds
and short on computer books.
I would like to help them build up their computer section by
donating computer books. I know that over the years that we all have purchased
books that we no longer need or have been upgraded in our library. If you would
like to donate something that would be great. Anything from general computer, to
programming, to networking even an old DOS 6.2 book would be an upgrade for this
library. I am not talking about a new CCNP 2.0 study guide but something that
has good information that is still relevant.
I am not doing this for myself but for the community and
primarily for the high school aged children in my community, who desperately
need a computer education to make it in this world. If you still need convincing
I could send digital pictures of my personal library and the Cisco lab at my
disposal to show you I ain't looking for personal freebies. Any books donated
will be stamped with your name as the donator. I will pay for shipping unless
you would like to donate that too. If you are intrested in donating some books
please e-mail me offline [EMAIL PROTECTED] to discuss how
we could make it happen.
Hey Thanks Alot!!

Agreed. I just took (and passed) mine yesterday and, from my

difficult. By the way, as a sometime lurker on the list, I appreciate

FastEtherchannel configuration

2000-08-02 Thread David Jones

Does anyone have any experience configuring FastEtherchannel on Cisco
switches? I have two scenarios:

Cisco 3524 Cisco 6009 = Cisco 3524
Running two xover cables to each 3524. When I configure what I believe to
be correct on the 6000 and the 3500's assigning two ports each to the
channel, I end up losing connectivity and have to remove the channel config.

Those switches are now in a production environment so for now, I have two
3524's, two xover's between them, trying to setup up the etherchannel. So
far, I can't tell that I've been successful. Any suggestions or hints?

Thanks,

Dave

Yes, after filling out the survey, you must start at question #1 and go
forwards, there is no going backwards, so the order is the least of your
problems.

As for the individual tests, no specific order required, you just have to
pass all of them.

Matt,

I too work and live in the Chicago area and although is an ever present need
for Unix talent, the need for experienced networking professionals has not
diminished at all. HP UX is a different animal than Solaris and it does see
higher demand because fewer people are fluent in it. Solaris admins are
much more common.

Re: VPN 3DES ON 2MB Link with 25XX

2000-08-02 Thread Greg Reaume

Hi Christophe,

I have been looking into a similar solution except I have 5 branches
accessing ALL their services from the head office and everything needs to
be encrypted. I arranged the establishment of a PVC over fibre for 2 of
the branches to the head office and have setup a router at one of those
branches to also connect 2 other branches through it. This still leaves me
with the problem of encrypting traffic from 1 branch to the head office.

I called my local Cisco rep and gave them my scenario. They recommended a
router based encryption solution at first but then I said I wanted 3DES and
there would be approx 30 people using the connection from the branch. They
told me the throughput on a 25/2600 series router is only about 256Kb@3DES.
That means I can't utilize my 2Mb fibre connection between offices. =(
They suggested I use the brand new PIX506. I told them at first I didn't
have that kind of money but they explained that Cisco realized their
shortcomings in the SOHO firewall market and designed this PIX with that
segment in mind. It has 7Mb throughput @3DES and costs only $2300 CDN,
less than my 2600 routers here. I just found my solution but I have yet to
implement it. It's still in proposal right now. I'm planning on putting a
PIX506 in the branch and moving the PIX520 we already have at our website
branch to the head office.

Hope this helps. Don't quote ME on the stats because I got them from a
rep.

--- Original message ---

Hello,

I wish to setup a 3DES VPN between two sites (a local and a remote site) on
a 2MB serial link using 2 2502 cisco routeurs. I will have 30 people
working on the remote site using telnet session, NT file and print with
servers in the local site.

Do you think the 25XX could handle such calculation (3DES processing) for
such amount of user. If yes is someone already setup such thing ?

regards,
Christophe.
