RE: Sub Interfaces (hmmm?)

2000-11-02 Thread Louie Belt

If using a physical interface with Frame -Relay(or other NBMA network), the
default for ip split horizon is off. With a standard serial link (no-frame
(NBMA)) the default is for split horizon to be on.

Hi Louie
I just want to clear one thing.
I thought that subinterface was created as a solution
for split horizon, so without subinterface configured,
split horizon should be on.
Could you verify what you said "if you are no using a
sub
interface on a physical interface, split horizon is
off by default, always
enable it on any "spoke" routers."?
I am not trying to be against you. I just want to
clear myself up.
Thanks.

Re: AUX port and Modem Problem

2000-11-02 Thread Suzi Beavis

I am trying to achieve option A.

A) remote dial-in for Exec session only to this router (no ppp)

I have tried to lower the speed on the modem/router to 9600 hoping this may
help, and I have tried several different modems and played around with AT
strings galore. I give up!!

This would at first appear to be a simple problem - but it is surprising
just how many people have emailed me regarding this exact problem!

That is:
No EXEC prompt. You can send text between hyperterminal (local PC) and
reverse telnet session (remote router).(I have tried using Tera Term Pro
as suggested in earlier group study emails.)

Good luck to those people with this problem - if you manage to work it out
please let me/us know.

Cheers,
Suzi.

What are you trying to achieve:

A) remote dial-in for Exec session only to this router (no ppp)

or

B) remote dial-in for PPP session which will allow Telnet, ping onto and
via the router in question ?

Once I know a) or b) I can advise why your config is wrong.

Regards,
Bill

I've been given an assignment by a company to create a network of about 14
computers. I need the assistance of individuals who know about NT server,
switches(Netgear fs524), cabling.
Computers have a mixture of Win 95 and 98 and I'll need NT workstation to be
installed on all computers. This is a big project for me so I would
appreciate the assistance of individuals who know what they are doing and
wouldn't mind the "live" practice sessions. The venue is in Brooklyn.
If interested, please reply or leave me a voice message at
718 404 3907 x1204

Thanks and I look forward to working with you.

RE: MPLS

2000-11-02 Thread Spolidoro, Guilherme

Hello Helena,

I ordered one of those free books from Cisco that people posted on the list.
The name of the book is:

L3-enabled ATM Solutions for Voice/Video, MPLS-VPN, QoS and Multicast.

The book will give you information on how to configure the Cisco gear and
also a decent overview about the technology.

Unfortunately, I don't have the link any more. Maybe somebody on the list
still does?

What you can do is to look into the archives (it was posted probably about
3-4 weeks ago).

Good luck.

design stress - pointy haired boss syndrome

2000-11-02 Thread Dave Santeramo

I have been infected with the buzzwrod virus. My boss wants me to implement
ever three letter acronym that I can find. Here is what he wants:

I have a T1 with UUnet and a T1 with BBN. He wants those setup with
BGP but the routes weighted (huh) so that UUnet is the primary. After
that he wants a VPN installed using IOS on the routers that not only
checks for username/password via Radius but also checks for certificates.
AHHH - A cert server is needed. Next step - He wants a a proxy server
running squid on BSD (don't think so) so that the whole LAN can be NAT.

So the question is:

How the hell am I going to VPN with a NAT server between the LAN and
the VPN enabled routers? Also, how am I going to weigh the routes so
that one connection is chosen over the other.

Feedback from the peanut gallery would be appreciated.

Um, Andi,

This is a "Cisco" list; any "Cisco" stuff in this project? If not, then is
just networking Windows PCs, hardly a challenging or interesting project for
most of the folks on this list...I know I experienced QWERTY forehead when I
read your post. If there is more to this project than you posted, such as
Cisco equipment, interesting cabling, etc. then specify that; otherwise,
you are looking for free labor.

Good luck,

Re: Study Group in MA

2000-11-02 Thread JCoyne

I live in Holbrook, Ma. and I have a bunch of equipment. here is a partial
list:

 3 - 2501
 1 - 2502
1 - 2511 (Terminal server for console access)
 2 - 2514 (Iam using 1 of these for my firewall/Nat box)
 1 - 2521 (Frame Relay Switch simulation)
 1 - 2610 (w/ 1- T1 wic and 1- ISDN wic)
 1 - 1720 (W/ 1- T1 wic, working on another ISDN wic)
1 - 2912 Catalyst (port 14 is bad, but it works other then that)
1 - 5002 Catalyst (Needs a Supervisor Module so it's not up yet)
1 - Adtran 550 ISDN Switch Simulator w/ PRI & Quad BRI cards
1 - Adtran ISU (Terminal Adapter for ISDN labs)
1 - Motorola UK 220 (Terminal Adapter for ISDN labs)
 2 - Veri-link CSU/DSU units w/ SCC control cards
1 - NT server running TACACS+ TFTP and Syslog
1 - Boat load of cables!

It maybe easier to have the group meet at my house, but Iam open to
anything at this point. I have my CCNA and MCSE and I am studying
for my CCNP. Hopefully I will be able to get my CCIE after that.
My equipment is located in my basement so it's not exactly a pretty lab
area. I would like to see us get a group of about 3 to 6 people. Any more
then that I think is too much. I would also like to make sure everyone is
atleast a CCNA and MCSE or CNE. I work on saturdays, but Iam usally
home by 2:30. Maybe we could work on labs after that time. If we do this
we need dedicated people who are willing to put in some serious hours.
I would also be interested in Red Hat if we make it to CCIE.

2000-11-02 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

>From what I understand, VPNs and NAT don't exactly play well together. Why
is the NAT necessary?

The other issue of weighing the UUNet routes is simple - just use the Local
Pref value in BGP (set the pref for routes coming from UUNet higher than the
ones coming from BBN). Be careful, though - you don't want your network to
become a transit AS carrying traffic between UUNet and BBN.

RE: CCIE prep trainining UK

2000-11-02 Thread Shaun Wakelen

This is based down near Southampton, and I have heard it is supposed to be
the business. It is an intensive 2 weeks, where you are given 70-80
exercises to do. They recommend staying local which will cost about another
£1000 (unless this is included in the price Phil gave), as the accommodation
is only a couple of minutes walk away. They have a large amount of kit,
including (if I remember correctly) some PBX's for voice configurations. I
was told about this from somebody who works at Comstor (ex RBR) who went on
it and he also said that he had heard negative things about NetGun, but had
not been on it. I have just finished the NetGun set of courses, which was
fairly intensive, so long as you have enough kit to practice on. NetGun is
OK, there were a couple of minor quibbles, but nothing to shout about. It
consists of 5 Cisco course, and three other workshops written by the 2
CCIE's that work at Global Knowledge (or GeoTrain as they were known as).
One of the guys that was on NetGun with me was planning on going on this lab
prep. MTS also do a similar thing.

These are the details that Martin sent to me a while ago

Accommodation is available at the training centre - the cost is
around
£1000 for the two weeks, this includes ALL meals and accommodation.
The
training room would be no more than 2 mins walk from your room and
the
equipment is available 24/7 during your stay including the weekend.

I have just added additional ATM routers, 2 * Cat 6500, a 2 PBX'x
with 8
VoIP routers. Each student will have control of at least 4 routers.

Any problems or questions pertaining to the CCIE program or the
course in
general just drop me a mail or give me a call.

Thanks again for you interest.

instructor led training

2000-11-02 Thread shane waterbly

The Aquarius Institute:
There was a short posting regarding this school
sometime in August. I'm curious if anyone has any
other information regarding their CCIE training.

The Institute boasts a "CCIE" course. Eight months
long (300 hours), 3 nights a week or the weekends. All
instructors are written CCIE, one has passed the lab.
(a new instructor is coming aboard to teach the CCNA
portion. He is a CCNP)15 grand for the course.

I have sat in on one of the classes. I was pleased
with the instructors knowledge and teaching style. The
lab was fairly impressive also.

I am currently a CCNA. I have no high hopes that this
school will actually produce someone of CCIE level
within eight months (though they claim the first class
graduated and ten out of ten students passed the
written. They are awaiting a time slot to take the
lab)I do believe it is good training to continue and
gain the CCNP along with practical knowledge and good
hands on training. Which is something I'm severely
lacking at this point.

Any thoughts, comments, rumours heard or knowledge
about this establishment someone would like to pass
along is appreciated.

thank you for your support.

I used Boson BSCN Test#1 because I'd been studying various sources and
had no way to guage my readiness for the real exam. I found the Boson
test helpful in
showing me a few areas I was still weak in, then went in and passed the
real deal w/ a 919. Like the other Cisco exams I'd taken, the real test
was very different from the practice one; but IF you use the practice
test as a learning tool so that you actually understand the material,
then whatever format or viewpoint the question presents is not much of
an issue.

RE: pre-shared key for PIX

2000-11-02 Thread Plambeck, Todd

The Pix only supports DHCP with Version 5.2(X)software. To create an IPSEC
tunnel using 2 Pix's and DHCP follow the example in the attached link, but
change the:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/110/38.html

Phase 1: ( Pix without DHCP )
isakmp key cisco123 address 171.70.24.6 netmask 255.255.255.255
TO
isakmp key cisco123 address 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0

And in Phase 2:
remove this line of the configuration
crypto map newmap 10 set peer 171.70.24.6

I hope this helps.

Subject: pre-shared key for PIX

Hello,

I'm wondering if IPSEC can be set up this way: 2 PIX
using pre-shared key, one of them has static ip
address, the other one use DHCP.

I know some other vendor supports this function, but
couldn't find anything on CCO.

Thanks in advance.

Re: instructor led training

2000-11-02 Thread George Garay

I too was very interested in the program at aquarius. I spoke with someone
at the college a few months ago but didn't pursue it because I wanted to
wait to see how the first class did. Just 2 weeks ago I called again to see
if I could go in and sit in a class and speak to some of their new grads.
according to them all 10 people who graduated passed the written and are
awaiting to take the hands on in january. They actually told me that all
their instructors are ccie's. and the reason they are not a cisco training
partner is that their facility does not have the adequate square feet
required to meet cisco standards. I will be going in there this saturday
the 4th of november to talk to some of the grads. i also asked if their was
a discount to the 15,000 if you have a ccna or ccnp and they said that if
you have a ccnp they will take off 25% of the 15000. I will post again on
saturday to let you know how it went.

conf-reg challenge

2000-11-02 Thread Matthew . Sypherd

Hey,

I recently had a learning experience with config-register, so I thought I'd
share it as a challenge.
(note: this is my question and my answers and I haven't seen them on any
tests I've taken, so I'm not violating any copyrights or NDAs)

Q - What is the effect of running the following command on a Cisco router?
router(config)#config-register 2102

a) It sets the router to its default boot settings
b) It sets the router to its default boot settings but ignores the config
stored in NVRAM
c) It sets the router to boot with the console port set to 2400 bps 7/N/1
d) It sets the router to boot with the console port set to 4800 bps 8/N/1
e) It sets the router to boot with the console port set to 1200 bps 8/N/1

Reply with your answer and the reason for picking your answer.

Seasoned Folks: If you know right off, don't answer to the list, make the
one's who aren't sure either guess or look it up first.
Newbies(of which I was one on this topic until recently): Hint - it's
probably not what you think. You are probably going to need a calculator
and some paper.

Oh, and wish me luck - I'm taking the CCIE R/S written tomorrow. My middle
name is Charles ("Chuck"), so hopefully that will help.
I've also signed up to take the CCIE Security beta written next Friday (the
last day it's available) - perhaps I'm just a masochist.

Re: instructor led training

2000-11-02 Thread Keith Townsend

Here's what I can tell you from three friends that took the course. I'll
try to be as objective as possible. They started the class last year (they
were the first class). The equipment came in very slowly. This shouldn't
be a problem now because they've had a few more classes since. The
instructors are CCIE's and are very knowledgable in the things that you
expect them to be(CCNA,CCNP material). As the course gets deeper in more
complex the greatest value is the gear and the Study Group that you form
with you class mates. You can use the equipment as much as you like coming
in as much as you like.

All three of my friends have their CCNA, CCNP, CCDA, CCDP and CCIE written.
One has gone on to work for Cisco althrough he was already a CCNP when he
started the class. One has moved into the Cisco group of our VERY big
publishing company(In the top 3 of the nation). And the other is in no
hurry he is still in the Server support team.

Disclaimer - This portion will not be objective.

The class is expensive 10K or 15K. The greatest benefits again are the Lab
and the Study Group. You could get a pretty descent lab for 5K and as for a
Study group For the equipment you don't/can't buy you could always rent
time. If you do well at self study I don't believe you will feel the money
was worth it. If you do better in a structured instructor-lead environment
then this is a good value as they do have "job placement" after you complete
your CCIE...LOL...

Hope this helped.

Re: instructor led training

2000-11-02 Thread George Garay

keith the info i got was from one of the recruiters for the school so he
probably was inflating the truth a little. he also said that the max
students in a class are 14-15 but they only have 3 racks of equipment. but
he did say that each rack has about $700,000 - $800,000 dollars of switches
and routers. How true is that I dont know. I too think that if you get a
local study group of about 4-5 and each invest $2,000 dollars we could get
enough equipment and practice on our own. There are plenty of resources out
there that provide practice labs and if you have the equipment you should do
alright.

Just my .02 cents

Re: instructor led training

2000-11-02 Thread Kenneth

I spoke to their people in Chicago when I still lived there last year.
Anyway, they had this thing that if you pass your CCIE within one year of
starting the class which means 4 months after finishing the class, they will
refund the entire 15K and they guarantee you a job that pays at least 85K. I
went and saw the lab and they didn't even have RSM modules on their CAT
Switches... but then again, this was last year when they just began their
classes.

To cut the story short, I have decided to pursue the CCIE by myself minus
the 15K and will probably spend 15K-20K worth of equipment which I can
always sell back for at least 60% of the price I got them for at Ebay.

Bottom line: If you're in no hurry to get CCIE certified, invest in
equipment and online labs instead.

Re: Connect 2500's via modem

2000-11-02 Thread Kenneth

You cannot connect to modems directly against each other. A modem does
Modulation/Demodulation so you need some kind of phone switch in between.
There are quite a bit of Line simulators for sale at ebay and they generally
cost $150-$200; It's a good price since you can sell it at ebay once you're
done with it.

I think the most popular ones are the Teltone TLS-3, TLS-4 and TLS-5. This
is the same company that makes the Teltone ISDN Simulators...

Re: Committed burst & Excess burst

2000-11-02 Thread George Garay

John,

Commited Burst is the maximum amount of data (in bits) that the network
agrees to transfer, under normal conditions. This data has priority under
conditions of congestion. Excess Burst is the maximum amount of uncommitted
data (in bits) in excess of Commited bursts that a frame relay network can
attempt to deliver during a time interval. Excess bursts data has a
user-set bit indicating that the frame may be discarded (is set to discard
elegible)in preference to other frames if congestion occurs. What it all
boils down to is that excess burst frames can be dumped if congestion occurs
so their is no guarantee that they will make it. You usually set this
amount with your provider (i.e. 128k commited/256k Excess)when ordering your
frame circuit.

hope this helps

RE: AUX port and Modem Problem

2000-11-02 Thread Terry Gorman

Hi Guys,

Suzi have you tried "echo on" and "echo off". These commands show the
entries that you make to the modem.

I'm lucky in that I have a US Robotics and at the bottom of it I have access
to some timy swithces. I can set echo on and off and it replicates the
problem exactly as you describe.

If you need to do it via reverse telnet on the modem simply enter, even
though you cannot see it, ate1 for echo on and ate0 for echo off. Once
again, this replicates the problem exactly as you describe it.

RE: Committed burst & Excess burst

2000-11-02 Thread Coker, Michael

Let me attempt to explain it:

There are three components to Frame Relay traffic shaping and the Frame
Relay standard for discarding packets, although not often used in producion
Frame Relay environments:

Bc = Committed Burst
Be = Excessive Burst
Tc = Time Interval

The Bc is similar to that of the CIR except it is an "amount" of data,
represented in bits, whereas the CIR is an amount of data transmitted per
second.

The Be is also represented as an "amount" of data, represented in bits.

The Tc is the time interval in which this process will take place.

Now for the process:

As frames are received by the Frame Relay switch it uses an algorithm known
as the leacky bucket algorith, similar to ATM, to track and monitor the
amount of data being sent from a DLCI.

Note: This entire process takes place within a specific amount of time,
known as the Tc. Once the Tc has expired, the process is repeated for the
next amount of data.

Think of the Bc and Be as buffers for the frames. As the data is received
by the Frame Relay switch from a specific DLCI it will fill up the Bc buffer
first. All packets after the Bc fill up the Be buffer and are marked as DE
(Discard Eligible). After the Be is filled, the frames are discarded until
the Tc expires. The process is then repeated.

Hope this clarifies things. Feel free to send me an e-mail if you need/want
further clarification. I've also got a Visio diagram that illustrates this
process.

Best Regards,

--Mike

subinterface!!

hi Brian.
I have a quick question from what you mentioned
regarding multipoint subinterface that I have always
been wondering about.
You mentioned, "Point to multipoint" and it can
communicate with many routers within that same
subnet."
Let's say there is a router in a headquarter, and 2
routers in a branch office, so let's say there are
three interfaces are participating in Frame-Relay.
My quick question is;
Are you saying that these three participating
interfaces should be in the same subnet in order to
communicate?
What if they are not in the same subnet?
Could you make it clear for me?
Thanks

Re: Don,t scold ,out of cisco topic....

2000-11-02 Thread Frank Wells

This is probably a site connector config problem which is routing messages
over a loop.

Could also be a corrupt priv.edb. If your site connectors are consistent,
try running some of the eseutil tools on the databases until you get a
consistent DB. Make sure you have a thorough read of the tools before you
use them, some of them are very powerful and can cause more damage than good
if you don't use them properly.
There are some excellent papers on Technet which explain these tools but
it's been so long I cannot remember the details to pass along.

This is not likely to be a client problem unless it is only on one PC.

sure..point to multipoint works like a physical interface
would.

I am saying thats certainly one way of doing it. You could just use
physical interfaces accross the board and inverse arp.

frame relay map statments then to tell it how to get from A to B.

Re: Cisco 4000M

Brian I really appreciate all the help you've given me over the past couple
of days. I have another question. I noticed routers like the 2507 going
for about $500-$600 bucks. I may be missing something here but isn't the
2507 just a 2501 with a built in hub. If so, why do they sell for less than
the 2501.

Thanks

I have sold quite a few of these. I know what I find them for, and I know
what I sell them for. So let me tell you what you want to pay:

4000M 16/4 $400-$500
np-2T $100-$120

An AGS is going to be cheaper, yes. I bought a 4 port serial for my AGS
for $50. Cables were $200 (for 4, dce/dte).

AGS+ is loud, its big, its ugly, but it works. You can add all kinds of
things, token ring, ethernet, etc, for pretty cheap.

The 4000M has some modules the ags doesn't have. Its more compact, its
more expensive, it runs more modern ios etc.

an AGS with CSC/4, 4 serials, 4 cables, etc, etc everything you need for a
frame switch, is going to be $300-$500 probably (keep in mind cables are
$48 each or so and I included that in that price).

4000M 4 port serial is $400 (np4t). 4000M just to do frame swithching
would be $800-$1000. Closer to $1200 if you want the 2 port ethernet as
well.

Re: 2509 Read only

2000-11-02 Thread Kevin Wigle

ya know, sometimes the "easy" ones turn a bit funny..

the register at 2102 is "normal" for a full 2509. - don't know about a
CPA.

I just telnetted into my 2509 and it is set to 2102 and I can access enable
and config the router.

Now, the 2500 series is a run from flash router so while the IOS is running,
the flash is read only.

However, in the later IOS releases (don't know when it changed) if
you're in the enable mode and give the command "copy tftp flash" you will
be prompted many times (are you sure, tftp address, etc) then the router
will reboot, do the copy and come back up.

So, can you get into the enable mode?

The config thing is strange, a simple memory upgrade wouldn't have changed
anything that affects your ability to config the router unless the memory
you put in isn't "kosher".

Have you tried putting back the old memory and seeing what happens?

Is there any more info you can share??

Kevin Wigle
CCDP/CCNP

get into enable mode, set config-register to 0x2101, reboot.
router will come up in (boot) mode. copy tftp flash. (caution this will
erase existing
file(s). set config-register back to 0x2102 and reboot

Wha-lah!!!

P.S> did it yesterday matter of fact!

I believe they are exactly the same connector, but the RJ48 has a "key"

The Cabinet Out of Space (need equipment cabinet recommendation)

2000-11-02 Thread Cthulu, CCIE Candidate

Hi, all,

Apologies in advance to HP Lovecraft for mangling one of his story titles in
the subject header ;)

As some of you may know, 10,000 pounds of my household goods arrived this
week at my new home in Dallass, Texas! My new home is slightly
smaller than my old one, and as a result, my wife, the artist, will be
sharing the computer room with me.

In order not to deafen her, and not to deafen myself further, I need a sound
proofed cabinet where I can put 4 2500 routers, 2 Cisco 3000 routers, 1
CS516, 2 token ring MAUs, 2 little 10baset hubs, and of course, the bane of
my CCIE studies, 1 loud, energy sucking AGS+ (BTW, AGS standards for
Aggravation, Grief, Stress). All told, about 4 feet of equipment that I
need to rack and roll! (Well, I don't really need to roll the equipment
around except for when my mother in law comes to visit, and I tell her that
I am moving the internet into her room to relieve congestion 8])

Any recommendations on what I can get that will house this equipment AND
kill the noise AND not look too ugly AND allow ample coolage for the
routers? Wheels are optional, though would be nice to have, and I don't
care about locking doors; a see through door to look at the LEDs would be
fun but not necessary.

I know that sources for racks have been discussed on this list; I am
looking for specific cabinet recommendations, both the hardware and the
hardware vendor.

Many thanks,

Charles

P.S. Anyone have an UPS (small as possible) recommendation that can handle
the equipment described above?

yes. they sell for less, because of lack of education. People
"know" what a 2501 is, so they search for it and try to get one, not
realizing that things like the 2503 and 2507 are actually a 2501 and then
some. 2501 is a legend, it has history, so it sells for a
premium..its a good box though.

$500 for a 2507 is a great price.

Off Subject Proxy

2000-11-02 Thread Rob Mears (c)

Hi,

I need a way to set the proxy setting on over 1200 user
machines. I need to define this setting by IP address.
Right now I am using Kixtart but with all the subnets we
have this will get out of hand quick. I have included a
piece from my script to show what I am talking about.

So basically, if a user logs in at 10.0.0.5, I need
something that will look as they log in using NT\2000
server and change there browser to point at a Firebox\Net
cache box in there subnet. All client machines are NT\98
\2000 pro. If they happen to go home with the laptop we
provide or go on the road, I need the setting removed as
not to burden our Helpdesk. The only constant I can think
of it the IP address to identify there location.

The KIX Script that is about a block long.
$BrowserproxyW2K="HKEY_USER\@Sid\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Internet Settings"

  CASE INSTR(@IPADDRESS0, " 10. 60. 193.") <> 0
   WRITEVALUE
("$BrowserproxyW2K","ProxyEnable","1","REG_DWORD")
WRITEVALUE
("$BrowserproxyW2K","ProxyServer","322.222.222.222:70","REG_
SZ")
 WRITEVALUE
("$BrowserproxyW2K","ProxyOverride","","REG_SZ")

Thanks a ton

2000-11-02 Thread Jason A. Diegmueller

> Next step - He wants a a proxy server running squid on BSD

I'm confused by this. You don't like squid, or you're pointing
out that squid has nothing to do with NAT?

squid does a GREAT job. I've got 1200 clients going though
an old P2/266 box with 384MB of RAM running squid, and it's
made a decent dent in Internet traffic. The machine peaks at
about 40% utilization.

I only have one squid server, so I use WCCP between an RSM
and the squid proxy. If the squid proxy goes down (ie,
power gets pulled on it like last week) it's no big deal.
The router will drop the proxy as a valid WCCP peer,
and send web traffic out unproxied as usual.

Invisible to the client, free software, works great. But you're
right, it won't do NAT. That would be the job of the underlying
OS/tools.

I thought SLP used something in the 10 or 20s range for the last octet.
HSRP uses 0100 5E00 0002 for the destination MAC address. Is this what ARP

RE: Segments, Switches, and Routers

2000-11-02 Thread Hartnell, George

Ah, yes, another lost soul in G-L3 land.

My 2948G-L3 is, indeed, at the core. Quite a useful multilayer model
device. I like it.

You can divide your class B into those 8 subnets, assign a BVI to each, and
then attach whatever ports to that bridge-group that you need. Nice for
servers back 'at the office'. There are, of course, lots of ways to set-up
and embellish. My needs were simple, so far.

Couple of items. Don't expect ACLs. Don't think that, on the 2948 at
least, the secondary gig port runs at line speed with both interfaces
pumping to different segments. Do 'think like a switched vlan' more than
'router centric'. The docs are minimal. We/I need a 'G-L3' group.

One more tidbit. "Cisco LAN Switching" (good book, read it *before* you
need to) does address flat VLAN structure quite a bit, but, in the last
third, you will read about how much easier it is to *manage* multilayer.
Very true, in my environs.

Best, G.

Subject: Segments, Switches, and Routers

If I have 2 segments each connecting to a Catalyst 5000 (via GBIC fiber) in
the core, do I need a router? The more I think about this, the more confused
I get. Should I put in a couple of 4908G-L3 in the core? I guess I don't
understand when I have to and when I don't have to use a router when
connecting seperate subnets through (or using) a layer 3 switch. I
understand what a layer 3 switch is, but I am confused on when I really need
to use one. If I was to subnet a class B address in to 8 subnets, would I
use a layer 3 switch, like a 4908G-L3 or a bunch of routers? I thought in a
proper Cisco design, layer3 activities should be done at the distibution
layer and not in the backbone. Thanks for thoughts and posts.

Some say both.

Thanh, this is not an overwhelming project by any means. You have a
wonderful opportunity here to learn a lot of things. So don't be afraid to
challenge yourself.

1) call in a couple of different vendors and ask for recommendations. Listen
to what they say. Ask questions.

2) Buy something from the vendor whose answers and attitude you are most
comfortable with. You will pay a little extra, but you will get an education
in the process

3) During the installation, become the consultant's best friend and shadow.

4) Read everything you can here at groupstudy. There will be a lot of things
irrelevant to your situation, but who can tell what you can use

5) It might be helpful to check out a basic networking book. Maybe check out
network magazine's web site. ( sorry, I don't know the link off hand and I
have to close up pretty soon )

Many of us got our start in situations like yours. You have the opportunity
to build a good network from scratch, and to learn a lot in the process.
Don't be afraid! Go for it! Have fun!

Best wishes

Chuck

Re: Which IOS do you run in your lab?

2000-11-02 Thread tony

Hi,Brain
I am running IOS 11.3 in my Labs,of course 12.0 is better, but in
my opinion,11.2 is almost enough and although the minimum choice, so
many major changes occur with 11.2. We can see too many "IOS11.2 or
later" in the CCIE ALL IN ONE LAB STUDY GUIDE.
IMHO,11.2 at minimum, the latest version is the best.

Re: design stress - pointy haired boss syndrome

2000-11-02 Thread Kenneth Lorenzo

I'm not entirely sure how squid works but I'm currently working on getting
two sites to connect through VPN using VPN Appliances and both LANs are
behind firewalls (Checkpoint and Raptor) that are doing NAT.

On thing I came across today from F-secure.com by searching "existing
firewall" is that one of the things you can do is setup both VPN devices to
sit on the DMZ of both firewalls; You can create a 4th interface in addition
to trusted, untrusted, and DMZ and call it the VPN Interface. Anyway, you
have to add additionaly routing entries on your firewall and add
anti-spoofing on the said interface.

Here's a helpful link:

http://www.europe.f-secure.com/support/vpn%2B/cases/10n.html

If anyone knows of a better way, let us know. If only I can convince my boss
to use the built in VPN Services on these firewalls, life would be better!

Hope this helps.

Re: Question ??

2000-11-02 Thread Kenneth Lorenzo

1) Get a DSL Line, or a lease line with constant connection to the internet,
buy a firewall that supports VPN, Cisco Firewall, Sonicwall, Checkpoint,...
2) Setup a PDC on the main office, and Setup a BDC on each remote office.
3) Buy a SOHO VPN/firewall device for each remote office
4) Implement a WINS Server on Main office. Create LMHosts files on each BDC
to point to the PDC. If implementing a BDC on each office is expensive,
setup LMHOSTS files on each computer or enter in the address of the WINS
Server.
5) Celebrate ;-)

You'll like this project and it'll look good on your resume.

Re: NAT

2000-11-02 Thread Kenneth Lorenzo

I haven't worked with a 4000 but generally, you should be able to use the
command:

ip nat inside ...

you do have to configure "ip nat inside" on your internal interface and
create special PAT rule using the command "ip nat inside source ... "

example:

ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.1.1 25 A.B.C.D 25

where A.B.C.D. is your external address.

Re: Which IOS do you run in your lab?

2000-11-02 Thread whatshakin

If you can afford to drop a wad of RAM in all your routers then go with
12.1, it has everything the older versions have and more. If your like most
of us though, you settle for 11.2 or higher. I end up swapping DRAM and
IOS versions between routers so I can run whatever version of IOS I need for
a particular scenario.

Re: Question ??

2000-11-02 Thread M. A.

Chuck,

I must say that you're one of the most helpful contributors to the
groupstudy list. You have shown time and again that you're willing to help,
and your technical insights are usually first-class. Even when questions in
this mailing list are open-ended and are not Cisco-specific, you still offer
help or advise in the right direction. I wish you well on your CCIE lab!

And Thanh, judging by your email address, I guess you're in Vietnam. I have
absolutely no idea about the telco infrastructure that's available to you,
but I guess you may consider three options to connect the 7 branch LANs to
the HQ:

(1) POTS: If your IT budget is limited, you might consider the good old
analog phone network as your WAN option. You can choose routers like Cisco
2509 at the HQ to serve as access server, and 1601-R (and connect to analog
modems) at branch offices to dial-up to the HQ. However, the bandwidth will
be quite limited, and you might have problem with protocols that are
time-sensitive, unless you have all sites semi-permanently connected (as
analog call setup times exceed 30 seconds on avg).

(2) ISDN: You get more bandwidth (either 64kb or 128kb) and much faster call
setup with ISDN. Get telcos to install PRI at the HQ and BRI at branch
offices. HQ can use a router like the 3620 with T1/E1 interface, and the
branch offices can use 1603-R for ISDN-BRI dial-up.

(3) Frame-relay: Your scenario will be a classic hub-and-spoke topology for
a frame-relay WAN setup. Routers like 2620 or 3620 should be grunty enough
at the HQ, and branch offices can use 1601R for serial connectivity to
CSU/DSU. You can specify how much bandwidth you like on a link by link
basis. Just make sure that you have enough bandwidth specified on your HQ
link (HQ CIR = sum of 7 branch link CIRs)

I guess it pretty much comes down to how much the carriers charge in Vietnam
for different WAN solutions, and how much your IT budget is for the
provision and the rental of the WAN links.

HTHAL

M.A.

I think its a "good thing" that Cisco won't be starting anyone on the lab
Friday 13th (april 2001). They are closed for Easter from what I
understand. I tried to schedule the 13th, (before I put 2 and 2 together
and realized friday the 13th is not what you want :) ). April 7th in RTP
is where I'll be.

Two DLCI numbers?

2000-11-02 Thread jeongwoo park

Hi all
While I was reading a cisco book, I came across the
fact that DLCI number has only local significance
because there might be more than one DLCI number
associated with one pvc.
Why would any pve in frame relay network have two DLCI
numbers?
I know that DLCI number is given by frame relay
service provider.
Can someone explain this?

Thanks in adv.

jeongwoo

LANE

2000-11-02 Thread Raymond Mak

Hi,

Is it possible to configure LANE on router, eg 7500 series, since I just
see examples of LANE configuration on Catalyst 8400 etc in Cisco site?
Thanks

Regards,
Raymond

Hi,

You might have two point-to-point PVC to two different sites, eg. site A is
a branch office while site B is your supplier.

Thanks,
