Aaron,

Excellent job! I was curious about how much experience you had prior to the
Lab. Some people in this group have very little experience, and others have
8-10 years experience prior to beginning CCIE track. Could you clue me in?
Also, could you give the exact titles of those other three books that you
mention. I read many scary Lab stories, then one inspiring one like
yours makes me think "it could happen!".

Subject: CCIE #6460

 Hello all,

This is a brief synopsis of my ccie lab and the tools I used to study. If
you're not interested you may want to just hit the delete key now.

I just thought that I would take a few moments to share my study
methodology
for the CCIE lab. I've been meaning to do this since I passed the lab on
November 15th in San Jose, but I always seem to get sidetracked with all
of
my newfound free time. This was my first attempt at the lab and I found
it
to be fairly straight forward. It wasn't as convoluted as I expected and
I
had seen pretty much everything before.

 Day 1

The first thing that I did was read through the entire lab TWICE. I
realized that I knew how to do everything and went to work on my diagram.
I
found day one to be very easy and was done by 2 o'clock. I checked and
re-checked all of my work and felt very confident in everything that I had
done. After that I spent time making sure that ALL of my information was
recorded correctly and neatly on my diagram. I felt very confident when
I
left, but I have to admit as I tried to get some sleep the what if's were
 creeping in my mind.

 Day 2

I arrived for Day 2 happy to see the Day 2 binder on my desk and went
through the same process of reading the entire lab twice. I realized that
I
knew exactly what to do on 90% of the lab and may have to browse the cd
for
the other 10%. Again, I found that there was plenty of time and I had
completed everything that I knew how to do by 10:30. I spent the next 30
minutes reviewing the cd and configuring the remaining 10%. I then
re-read
everything and checked over all of my work and made sure that my diagram
was
complete. Documentation is very important in the lab not only for
troubleshooting, but to ensure that the proctor can see what you were
doing.
The proctor spends all day at the lab and then has to check your work in
the
evening or at lunch for day 2. The last thing he wants to do is spend 30
minutes trying to read your diagram. Of course, this is just my opinion.

After day 2, I felt real good about my work, but nervous none the less.
This made for what seemed like a never ending lunch. Once we arrived back
at the facility I was called first and on the way back to the lab I was
told
that I had made it to troubleshooting and that I had three hours. When I
returned to my desk I found the paperwork for troubleshooting and for the
first time found out how many points I had. I had gained 70 of the 75
points and only needed 10 of the 25 from troubleshooting. At that point,
I
knew that I had passed and just needed to knock out the troubleshooting.
As
I looked around I realized that no one else had progressed from Day 2. I
spent about an hour and a half on troubleshooting and felt like I fixed
everything so I turned in my sheet. About 5 minutes later, the proctor
returned with a yellow sticky note with my number on it. He then asked me
if I would erase all of my configs and then I left with a huge grin on my
face. I just couldn't believe that all of my studying paid off.

I met Chuck Larrieu a few hours later for a victory dinner. I knew that
it
would be nice to have some company one way or the other and I was glad
that
it turned out to be for good reasons.

Passing the test was very rewarding, but the journey was just as
rewarding.
It's amazing the amount of material that you learn along the way and the
many friends that you make. I have become friends with many people that I
may of never met if I wasn't studying for the CCIE.

 Study Materials

I studied the normal books Caslow, Halabi, and Doyle and found them all to
be very helpful. I also used three other books extensively that I don't
see
mentioned very often. I used the configuring cisco routers for bridging,
dlsw+, desktop protocols and the Cisco Press Lan Switching Book. I
found
them both to be very helpful as I work extensively with cisco routers and
rarely use cisco switches. I also used the CCIEBootcamp labs which I
found
to be an excellent resource for practice. There are a lot of other labs,
but most of them don't throw everything together like the bootcamp labs.
I
have to admit that I only completed about half of them and never did the
dreaded lab 8, but I studied all 17 of them and read up on anything that I
 didn't know how to

Re: question-reg dialer group command

2000-11-29 Thread Erick B.

Yes,

The dialer-list command specifies interesting traffic.
Traffic that matches this will reset the idle timer
for the dialer interface. The default idle timeout is
120 seconds.

In your example below, the dialer interface will come
up and work if the config is good, etc and after 120
seconds it will disconnect because there isn't a
dialer-list entry to define what traffic is
interesting and reset the idle timer.

The dialer-list is used only to define interesting
traffic to bring up a interface and keep it from
idling out. You can permit all ip traffic as
interesting or restrict by using an access-list. This
access-list doesn't block traffic from going across
the dialer interface once the interface is up -- to do
that use ip access-group on the interface.

I hope this clears things up. If not ask away.

Re: config management software

RCS? CVS? SourceSafe? Combined with iPlanet/Netscape
Directory server, Microsoft Active Directory, or OpenLDAP?

Maybe...

If you are going to write it by yourself, use C or C++ under Solaris or
FreeBSD, that way you are guaranteed happiness and scalability.

You should write a routine to get MD5 checksums on all of them, as
well ;

Then again...

The only software you can buy that comes close to what you are trying
to do is probably Aprisma (formerly Cabletron) Spectrum 6.0.

But...

For true integration and vendor support, my suggestion is to use all
of the point products individually (get latest versions of CW2k/RME,
Spectrum, Marconi NMS solutions) and then integrate them via an
Element Management System (e.g. Cisco uses CEMF) that applies
W3C's XML and OMG's CORBA technologies to integrate NMS,
OSS, and BSS solutions. This is quickly becoming industry standard.

Sure, copy tftp startup-config (which doesn't affect your running conifg).
Then next time it comes up, it uses the new startup config.

Re: Routing Protocols Load balancing vs. other solutions

2000-11-29 Thread Erick B.

I'm no expert here, but from my experience...

Alot of this depends on the forwarding
methoding/switching method (whatever x vendor calls
it) of a device as well as the end station. The end
stations are responsible for pieceing the packets back
together in the right order (going over multiple paths
you can get out of order packets).

Each vendor has different ways of forwarding across
equal paths. Theres per-packet, fast-switching
(building a cache based on src/dest hash), CEF, etc.
These have an effect how load balancing works as well.

On 3Com, they have 2 options for Equal Cost.
Basically, either do per-packet among the equal paths
or go over one path. BayRS has 2-3 options but I
haven't really played with it much to comment on how
well it performs/behaves.

I've worked on several networks using equal cost (OSPF
mainly) and haven't seen many issues but have seen 1-2
cases where some applications didn't work well. This
was heavy traffic as well.

I'm not familiar with F5 or Windows NT. Now, some of
those boxes do a different form of load balancing at
the upper layers to balance web-server traffic among a
group of servers.

Hope this helps.

OSPF Lab - DR behaviour with loopbacks WAS: RE: question about loopback interfaces

2000-11-29 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Much as I personally rant about cross posting the two lists, I believe this
one might be worth examination from all levels.

Recall the questions and answers about the purpose of the loopback
interface, particularly in OSPF. Among the answers proposed is that the
loopback, being always up, provides continuity, in case an interface fails.
In particular, the book answer is that because the loopback is always up, it
provides the means of reaching a router so long as the loopback is reachable
via any interface that remains operational.

I wish this lab had been a bit quicker and less dirty. But it has provided
an interesting learning experience for me. Thought I would pass along my
observations for those who want to ponder yet another protocol behaviour.

My supposition:

- ethernet
| | |
DR BDR DR/other
| | |
(---frame relay cloud )

DR ethernet hardware fails.

I would venture a guess that the BDR
would be promoted because even though there is an alternative route to the
DR loopback, hellos go only to adjacent routers, and the DR is no longer
adjacent.

Well, I proved my point. Under this scenario, when I unplug the DR ethernet
port, the BDR becomes the DR.

Some router outputs are listed below. I hope this message falls below the
reject size threshold.

OK. The observations:

1) I am correct that in the case of the ethernet DR becoming disabled, the
BDR still becomes the DR.

2) If the frame cloud is a different area than the ethernet segment, the
loopback route disappears. This behaviour is specific to OSPF, because of
the fact that all inter-area traffic MUST pass through area 0. When the area
0 link goes down, the route to the loopback may disappear, depending upon
the OSPF topology.

3) When I reconfigured everything so that both the frame relay and ethernet
segments were area 0, and the loopback interfaces remained visible via the
frame segment after disconnecting the ethernet segment, the process still
occurred as predicted. That is, the BDR became the DR and the DR/Other
became the BDR. The fact that the loopback route remained visible had NO
EFFECT whatsoever on the DR/BDR situation. Why? Because the DR/BDR
relationship is unique to a segment. Again, this is a behaviour specific to
OSPF.

4) My frame cloud was configured as a point to multipoint network. As you
will see in the outputs, the routers form full adjacencies on the frame
segment, but elect no DR or BDR. I believe that if I were to configure the
frame segment as a broadcast network, that DR and BDR's would be elected,
but that those designations would remain local to that segment, and would
have no effect on any transactions on the ethernet segment. I leave that
experiment to some other brave soul.

Conclusion:

With regards to OSPF, at least, the idea that the loopback interface
provides any kind of reliability is in and of itself not true. Problems
arise with the advertising of the loopback throughout the OSPF domain,
particularly when the area 0 connection is lost, and the alternate routes do
not propogate.

This of course is not an issue with IGRP or EIGRP or even RIP, which do not
have the same restriction with regards to routing behaviours. So while in
OSPF the existence of a loopback interface might prove to be of no use, and
probably more often than one might care to imagine, it still will prove
quite useful within other routing protocols.

The outputs:

RE: Ip management

2000-11-29 Thread Taylor, Don

What level of management do you mean? If
you're not DNSing or DHCPing, wouldn't you just want a spreadsheet saying what
IPs are allocated to what hosts and which ones are left over? I know of a very
large ASP that does this in MS Excel.

Most that I've seen do all sorts of DNS and DHCP

manage a multitude of IP addresses - not provide DNS entries or make them
available as a DHCP server :) Is there anything that anyone else has

Re: config management software

2000-11-29 Thread Yip Chan Keong

For true integration and vendor support, my suggestion is to use all
of the point products individually (get latest versions of CW2k/RME,
Spectrum, Marconi NMS solutions) and then integrate them via an
Element Management System (e.g. Cisco uses CEMF) that applies
W3C's XML and OMG's CORBA technologies to integrate NMS,
OSS, and BSS solutions. This is quickly becoming industry standard.

Thanks, my concern with developing in house is scalability...and the time
taken to develop the solution. i have monitoring products running for
systems and networks, but seems like there is no 'gel' to glue them
together. can Netcool or Concord be considered an element management
system? None of them can cover the entire spectrum of services needed for
an OSS, e.g. management config, IP, security, patch etc.

regards,
/yck

On a more serious note, you may be more senstive to EM and RF than most

You can reduce your exposure to the cell phone by using a headset which will

I used it extensively, both the CCNA and CCIE sections which helped me in
passing
the R/S written exam last July. I suggest you read every tutorial and do
every practice
exam after the tutorial. If you have access to a lab, you might wish to do
the labs also.

I took the practice exam twice. the first time, I was a long way from being
in a position
to pass the real exam. the second time I took it I was within 5 points.
That was at the
end of June prior to my attending Networkers in Orlando.

Again, for me it was money well spent. You have the benefit of gleaning
some knowledge
from a number of networking heavyweights such as Pricilla Oppenheimer and
Howard C.
Berkowitz. There is a new tutorial/exam/lab every month on a wide variety
of subjects.

I periodically take the practice R/S exam for review and to keep sharp.
Once I pass the lab
next year, I'll continue using certificationzone for when I have to
recertify.

You'll still need to use the Cisco web site; particularly the
internetworking guides and the
usual Doyle/Caslow/Halabit complement of books and I might also suggest the
CCIEprep
study guide by the Rossi family.

Hope this help..dj

Passed Support 2.0 last wednesday with a score of 832. This was the only
one of the 5 exams that I thought was poorly written.
Halfway through the test I was starting to get upset because the questions
were vague to say the least..but if you have studied
hard and know your show and debug commands you'll be OK. Cisco really
shouldn't require you to sign a NDA for this exam, who in
their right mind could remember these weird questions?? :-) Here is how I
 passed:

Used the Cisco-Press CIT book (OK)
Used the exam cram book. (also OK)
Used Boson test #2 (helpful, I reccommend it)
Used Priscilla's flash cards (very helpful)

Here's how I rate the exams from 1 to 10 with 10 being the most difficult:
  CCNA - 4
  ACRC - 7
  BCMSN - 5
  BCRAN - 5
  Support - 6

I consider myself a CCNP Version 1.75 because of the ACRC test. I know
that makes me only a 1.0 so I'll probably take BSCN to get to
2.0. Oh well, I'll take it.

I've read *alot* of study books during this process and here are two "must

One or two comments inset.

Chuck's Text
I would venture a guess that the BDR
would be promoted because even though there is an alternative route to the
DR loopback, hellos go only to adjacent routers, and the DR is no longer
adjacent.

Well, I proved my point. Under this scenario, when I unplug the DR ethernet
port, the BDR becomes the DR.

1) I am correct that in the case of the ethernet DR becoming disabled, the
BDR still becomes the DR.

A couple quick notes. The resiliency that using a loopback interface on an ospf
router has little to do with individual segments. Naturally, if you lose an
interface into a multi access segment you will lose your adjacencies on that segment.

However, let consider a router with 4 interfaces. Without using a loopback
interface, if the interface with the highest IP address dies, the routers RID
changes. What this means is that not only does the router lose its adjacencies on
the defective interface, it also must changes its RID to the next highest address.
This will force it to lose and rebuild all other adjacencies and as far as I know,
for every router in the area to recalculate their SPF tree's. Using a loopback
address, in the same situation, this failure would be contained to the one segment.

Some older rom's could not see all manufacturers. You may be able to fix
this with a bootrom upgrade.

It could also just be an unsupported chip.

A couple quick notes. The resiliency that using a loopback interface on an ospf
router has little to do with individual segments. Naturally, if you lose an interface
into a multi access segment you will lose your adjacencies on that segment.

However, let consider a router with 4 interfaces. Without using a loopback interface,
if the interface with the highest IP address dies, the routers RID changes. What this
means is that not only does the router lose its adjacencies on the defective
interface, it also must changes its RID to the next highest address. This will force
it to lose and rebuild all other adjacencies and as far as I know, for every router in

Think in terms of interfaces.

A frame switch (4 serials)
3 routers with serials (so you can do full mesh)
2 routers with ethernet
2 routers with isdn
2 routers with token ring

to me the above is a good basic lab that covers the basic interfaces.
Some ways at accomplishing it:

frame switch: AGS+, 4000, 2520, 2521 (pick one)
2501 and 2503 (gives you both ethernets and 1 isdn, 2 serials)
2502 and 2504 (gives you both tr, 2nd isdn, 2 serials)

thats a good basic lab

I just looked at a 4000 switch we have here and didn't see anything either. In the CiscoPress BCMSN book (Page 374-375) It says Cisco IOS software now allows you to use a Web browser to issue Cisco IOS commands to your network device. Ver 11.0(6) and later. I couldn't find anything about using Http management via a set based switch. Although I do have it working on a 2912XL and it works great. Diagrams and everything.

Hope that helps,

You might need a newer version of the software - look for those with
CV/CiscoView. You also need the Java client on your PC as you do with the
2900/3500XL series switches for HTTP based management. If you can't find
info in the docs, look at the latest product software version release notes.
That's why all the new feature documentation usually lies.

Re: OSPF Lab - DR behaviour with loopbacks WAS: RE: question about loopback interfaces

2000-11-29 Thread David FAHED

Using addresses associated with loopback interfaces (with ospf) has two
advantage :
1) The lo interface is more stable than any physical interface. It is active
when a
router boots up, and it only fails if the entire router fails.
2) The network administrator usually prefer to use a predictable or recognize
addresses as the Router IDs.

Information: OSPF will continue to use a Router ID learned even if the interface

subsequently fails. Therefore, the stability ot a loopback interface is only a
minor
advantage. The primary benefit is the ability to control the router ID
(Jeff doyle).

Hope this help.

Chuck Larrieu wrote:

 | | |
 | | |

So while in

probably more often than one might care to imagine, it still will prove
quite useful within other routing protocols.

wonder why they need to take the web site down if they're not ready with the

I hope the wait is worth it and when Ciscopress.com is back up again it will

RE: Access-list Problem with UDP Port 53

Title: RE: Access-list Problem with UDP Port 53

Correct, when you make a tcp or udp request ona known port (dns,
smtp, ftp,etc, check http://www.isi.edu/in-notes/iana/assignments/port-numbersfor
a list), the response from the destination is always (supposed to be always)
returned on a port greater than 1023. This was the part that confused me, I
couldn't figure out if you were trying to block your clients dns requests or
block outside sources from making dns requests to your dns server. Keeping
tweaking it and if you need any help just ask.

CID Beta report

2000-11-29 Thread David Steele

Hi all,

Just completed the CID Beta. Naturally I am not certain if I passed, as I
have to wait for about 10 weeks, however I am pretty confident. I walked out
of the beta exams in January and Febuary for some CCNP stuff feeling pretty
despondant but eventually passed those exams, so I think that this one will
come through OK.

Hard facts, for those of you who treasure them:
184 questions
180 minutes
no marking questions and going back later
I finished it in about 100 minutes.

I studied using the Sybex text for CID 3.0 and Boson's first test set. I
only had time to do the questions from the text to highlight the areas that
I was lacking in, then spot reading those areas. I also only had time to
complete two of the four test sets from Boson, but I still think I got my
money's worth.

The exam questions were mostly reasonable - there were a few trick questions
(probably more than that, I just didn't spot them :) and much more of a
focus on the technology (as opposed to the platform) than the old test's
study guides imply. Lots of stuff on security issues, a good testing of WAN
technologies, including some acronym questions that blew me out of the water
(in an area that I do not have direct exposure to). Some good questions on
your understanding of how various routing protocols interact.

Oh, and I gotta say, there was one really cool question - I nearly laughed
out loud when I read the joke answer stuck in the middle of it. If you take
the test you'll spot it, I'm not going to spoil it for you (and I'm not
going to skate that close to breaking the NDA).

Based on what I saw today, I think that Cisco are about to produce an exam
that will stand the test of time much better than the existing CID 3.0.

Rgds,
Dave Steele

DRAM and Boot ROM's

2000-11-29 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

There's a 4MB DRAM SIMM on my 2501.

In a previous e-mail (8/27 by John Hardman) I read that almost any 72 pin
SIMM's would work as DRAM SIMM's, but no matter which of the about 10 I have
lying around works correctly; They all say 1024 Kbytes of main memory when I
boot up, even though they vary from 8 to 16 MB.

I have been searching for information about this on the Cisco site, but
can't really get the facts that I am looking for.

FYI, my Boot ROM's are:

MX B9536
08-0034-01
FW1 10.2(5)
28058A

MX B9536
08-0035-01
FW2 10.2(5)
28057A

Would I need to upgrade them before the SIMM's would work?

Also, if anyone know of a place where DRAM and Flash SIMM's can be purchased
for a good price, please let me know.

Thanks for any comments on this,

Ole

Software engineers and producers of firewalls will also have to work on
it. So the Internet will get more safe.
I agree with you when you say that it is a vicious circle but that is the
same in real life too.

Consider the following scenario, that takes place in a country
without universal and unlimited health care. Someone walking on a
public street is stopped by a wild-eyed, stethoscope-wielding person
in a white coat. The white-coated one screams that he has observed
that the passerby has yellow eyes, spider-shaped blood vessels under
the skin, fluid retention in the legs, is trembling and seems to be
itching intolerably.

"You have innumerable symptoms of advanced liver disease. That is not
good. Your liver wishes to harm you and must immediately be replaced
with a transplant."

And the innocent one says "I have no money for food. If I do not
eat, the state of my liver will be irrelevant."

Let me try to put this into philosophical rather than metaphorical
terms. The doctor, in my metaphor, regards the state of one's liver
as an absolute good. Those hackers that claim they are doing a favor
for individuals and organizations, by probing every aspect of their
security, base their claims on that security against active probes is
an absolute good, and that the target of their probe can guard
against the attacks.

Assume that one of the targets of the probe is a community health
center in a remote rural area. That center has limited funds. Due to
its remote location, electrical power is not reliable. With finite
resources, the center may make a decision that it is more important
to buy a backup electrical generator than to allocate those resources
to install a firewall.

In the clinic example, I will assume that its system administrator is
infinitely knowledgeable in security and security tradeoffs, and has
made a conscious decision that the risks of not having electricity
are more severe than the risks of breakins. Does that administrator
have an obligation to tell the hackers why he implemented a certain
policy? What responsibility do the hackers--and I will assumed they
are well intentioned--have to the system administrator? That
administrator may have detected a breakin, and not know if it is
malicious or not. Under such circumstances, a reasonable
administrator is forced to spend resources to restore potentially
damaged files. He cannot trust the word of the hacker, because they
are anonymous and unsolicited. No relationship of trust exists
between hacker and organization being hacked.

For sake of argument, the clinic administrator is assumed to be a
security expert. In the real world, only larger enterprises will
have in-house security staff. Properly supporting a firewall is not
a trivial task--I've done it, and simply staying aware of published
new threats and installing protections against them requires
significant effort.

To me, there is a significant ethical difference between:

a hacker that experiments on her own machines that run Microsoft
software, finds a vulnerability, and notifies both Microsoft and
independent organizations (i.e., http://www.cert.org) of the
vulnerability and how to protect against it

a hacker who invades a small business system and leaves a note saying

"I am an Elite Hacker D00D who got in through your lousy security.
Fix it. I could have left a bomb, but trust me, I didn't."

Excellent job! I was curious about how much experience you had prior to the

8-10 years experience prior to beginning CCIE track. Could you clue me in?
Also, could you give the exact titles of those other three books that you

yours makes me think "it could happen!".

There are a lot of other labs,
 but most of them

 Subject: DRAM and Boot ROM's

 There's a 4MB DRAM SIMM on my 2501.

In a previous e-mail (8/27 by John Hardman) I read that almost any 72 pin
SIMM's would work as DRAM SIMM's, but no matter which of the
 about 10 I have
lying around works correctly; They all say 1024 Kbytes of main
 memory when I
boot up, even though they vary from 8 to 16 MB.

I have been searching for information about this on the Cisco site, but
can't really get the facts that I am looking for.

 FYI, my Boot ROM's are:

   MX B9536
   08-0034-01
   FW1 10.2(5)
   28058A

   MX B9536
   08-0035-01
   FW2 10.2(5)
   28057A

Would I need to upgrade them before the SIMM's would work?

Also, if anyone know of a place where DRAM and Flash SIMM's can
 be purchased
for a good price, please let me know.

Thanks for any comments on this,

Don't study for it. Just take it, and read the questions carefully.

Actually, pretend that you have already taken it, and study for the lab
instead, then when you feel ready, take the written. Since the lab is much
harder, the written will be a breeze.

RE: DRAM and Boot ROM's

2000-11-29 Thread Radford Dion

Any dram simms with Parity will work (ie ECC memory).

From what I can remember (and my memory fades because it's not ecc), you can
check if your simms have parity by looking in the top right hand corner
where there are 5 or 6 little boxes drawn on the SIMM. If the bottom 3 boxes
contain circuit board components, then it is a parity simm. If these boxes
are empty, then it's plain old memory.

I could be wrong.

 Subject: DRAM and Boot ROM's

 There's a 4MB DRAM SIMM on my 2501.

In a previous e-mail (8/27 by John Hardman) I read that almost any 72 pin
SIMM's would work as DRAM SIMM's, but no matter which of the about 10 I
 have
lying around works correctly; They all say 1024 Kbytes of main memory when
 I
boot up, even though they vary from 8 to 16 MB.

I have been searching for information about this on the Cisco site, but
can't really get the facts that I am looking for.

 FYI, my Boot ROM's are:

   MX B9536
   08-0034-01
   FW1 10.2(5)
   28058A

   MX B9536
   08-0035-01
   FW2 10.2(5)
   28057A

Would I need to upgrade them before the SIMM's would work?

Also, if anyone know of a place where DRAM and Flash SIMM's can be
 purchased
for a good price, please let me know.

Thanks for any comments on this,

RE: About OSPF and Loopback port

Jim Healis CCNP, CCDP

Unless there have been recent IOS changes (I'm really most current in
11-something), it's even more unpredictable than just the highest IP
address:

At the time of OSPF initialization, the router ID is:

if there are multiple loopback interfaces, the highest IP address on any
loopback (i.e., not highest loopback interface number)
if there is a single loopback interface, use its address
if there are no loopback interfaces, use the highest IP address on any
active interface (i.e., if all interfaces are in shutdown, OSPF
can't initialize. Using loopbacks avoids this because a loopback
   cannot be down.)

A fiendish troubleshooting scenario:

R1 comes up first, then R2. They share an Ethernet. Neither has
any loopbacks.

Scenario 1 (R1 is initially misconfigured)
   R1 E0: 10.6.0.1 DOWN R2 E0: 10.1.0.1 UP/UP
  E1: 10.5.0.2 UP/UP E1: 10.5.0.2 UP/UP
  E2: 10.2.0.1 UP/UP E2: 10.2.0.2 UP/UP

Admin discovers that R1 E1 is misconfigured and should have been 10.5.0.1.
Our Heroine corrects that interface to 10.5.0.1.

Assuming both routers had OSPF configured with
  network 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 area 0.0.0.1

Will a device on R1 E2 be able to ping a host on R2 E2?

RE: Ip management

2000-11-29 Thread Irwin Lazar

I'm notsure that there
are. My recommendation to organizations that I consult with is to manage
all IP address resources and systems using one of these centralized tools.
It doesn't buy you a whole lot to have a system to manage IP addresses if you
can't also use that system toautomatically configure DNS/DHCP servers as
well as support Dynamic DNS. Just my
.02.

Irwin

Are there any that do just the IP management?

Most that I've seen do all sorts of DNS and DHCP
stuff as well as manage IPs. I need something that will JUST help me
manage a multitude of IP addresses - not provide DNS entries or make them
available as a DHCP server :) Is there anything that anyone else has
come across that has does LESS rather than more? I've been looking for
about a year and come up with nothing :(

Cheers,

Em

Re: garbage in hperterminal ?

2000-11-29 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

I had the same problem with a 1600. Did you recently upgrade the flash.
If so that may be the problem.
I loaded an image with ip/ipx/at/appn and the image was to big for for the
amount of ram I had, I had 12mb and the image needs 16. There was not enough
memory for the console. I could telnet in and the router still routed. This
was a case that was resolved by cisco officially and that was their story.
Funny aint it that the flash will hold the image but the memory wont support
it.

Well, this gives me a chance to make a point that I have wanted to make for
a while: Cisco Press is not Cisco. Cisco Press is owned by Macmillan
Technical Publishing which is owned by Pearson Education, which is owned by
someone else. (Publishing companies are hard to track. I think I got that

Cisco Press is not Cisco. Cisco works closely with them, of course, but
sometimes they shoot each other in the foot. (For example, I was bummed
when Cisco asked Cisco Press to turn my Designing Cisco Networks Web class
into a book, at about the time that I was finishing a different design
book, but I couldn't stop it.)

Anyway, enough rambling. I agree that it is egregious for the Web site to
be down so long. Perhaps they need more CCIEs working for them? ;-)

Well, maybe Cisco should think harder before lending its brandname to
Macmillan - it's the Cisco reputation at stake, not MacMillan's! Maybe they
should think about these issues before partnering with a third company.

I also think Cisco's online store - particularly the 'Learning Store' and
Cisco merchandise store such a big disappointment! (I'm trying to resist
using stronger language here :-)

Will someone let them know you actually need pictures of products you're
trying to sell ? And some sensible description of the items ? Maybe they
could learn something from the better-designed stores on the web! (And to
think they sell billions of dollars' worth of stuff online!).

End of web site rant.

Router Firewall Config

2000-11-29 Thread A.Strobel

I have a cable connection to the Internet with one static IP and I am running
a webserver as well. For security, I would like to use a Cisco router as a
firewall.

Has anyone implemented such a setup?
Will a router with two Ethernet interfaces cut it?
I would appreciate if you could share your (masked) configuration.

I found this link on CCO
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ics/cs003.htm
but it is calling for and additional serial interface and more than one static
IP.

Any input highly appreciated.
