U, no, it's not advisable to disable broadcasts if you want ARP to work.
ARP not working would cause rather severe problems. :-)

Dear Group,

I have a small query:

Is it advisable to disable broadcast on all the ports of switches. I have 3
catalyst series 6509/5500/5505 in my network running all the WINNT servers
4.0
with all win98/win95 as clients. With the help of CWSI I have observed that
many a times the broadcast increases very much I experience lot of
response
delay in my network.
can I use the command:

switch (enable)# set port broadcast 0%

Will this put any impact on my network like nodes won't be able to talk to
server or problem in finding the servers. I have also created VLAN's in
my
network to limit the broadcasts. Should I doit on all the ports...

many thanks in advance

Re: What is the difference between flooded broadcast and direct [7:466]

2001-04-13 Thread Reinhold Fischer

a directed broadcast comes from outside of the subnet and is directed to
the broadcast address of the subnet. this can be abused to do bad things
with it. just imagine sending a packet with a spoofed source address to
the broadcast address of a subnet. all the hosts that react on the packet
will respond to the address that never sent the packet ...

the flooded broadcast (never heard it as flooded) is probably the standard
broadcast that is generated inside the subnet and goes to all hosts in the
subnet.

If it's what I think that you are looking for, this type of cable does
exist, I have used them between btb 26xx'x and 25xx's.

Among other places, you can find one at -- www.pacificcable.com (use the
QuickNav drop-down to go to the 'smart serial' section)

Here's a pic to confirm:
http://www.pacificcable.com/PicFrames/Photos/CAB-SS-6026X.jpg (this one has
the DCE on the wic2t end, if you want it one the 60 side, you will need to
order another version (which is available)).

I'm not affiliated with Pacific Cable, but I have ordered from them and
would do so again.

Re: 2600 help , dmz, [7:256]

2001-04-13 Thread EA Louie

your basic configuration looks like it will work just fine, Mo, except for a
few details that you'll want to implement - you have default pointed to
s1/0:0, and the DMZ is behind fast0/0 somewhere.

to avoid asymmetrical routing, you'll want anything that comes in via s1/1:0
to go back out s1/1:0 - therefore, find a solution to re-route traffic
properly - possibly a route-map that sends the x.x.252.0 0.0.0.255 outbound
traffic to the s1/1:0 interface.

You also want to add an access list to the s1/0:0 interface that reflects
the security policy of the customer - minimally restricting ICMP and only
allowing the services that are required into the Corporate network, a
pre-firewall firewall.

Leo,

That was just an example, based on the information you have provided.
Of course, you'll have to use host addresses that does not overlap the

They will also interchange with DB60 adapters. I would make sure you

Re: What is the difference between flooded broadcast and direct [7:479]

2001-04-13 Thread Dr Rita Puzmanova

Some additional notes:

A directed broadcast to all hosts on a particular distant subnet/network
is in current IOS version implicitly not allowed (no ip
directed-broadcast) although generally this type of broadcast in
processed by router without any problem (correctly as per its routing
table).

"Flooded broadcast" is usually called "local broadcast" as it is
primarily aimed at a local segment, all hosts (e.g. for RARP, BOOTP,
purposes). It is implicitly never passed through an attached router
(hence you need an ip helper-address if you need a router to forward
such a datagram).

the flooded broadcast (never heard it as flooded) is probably the standard
broadcast that is generated inside the subnet and goes to all hosts in the

Off-topic: On-line course in TCP/IP [7:480]

2001-04-13 Thread Dr Rita Puzmanova

Hi all,

The discussion on this group concerning learning resources is mostly
about self-study (books and other vast - not only Cisco - resources,
including the group postings), or instructor-led courses provided by
Cisco Training/Learning partners.

I wonder whether someone has ever taken an on-line (web-based,
asynchronous) course in IT (even not specifically by Cisco or
Cisco-oriented) and what the experience has been.

I would appreciate your input (off-mailing list due to the off-topic
nature), as I am myself exploring the on-line education possibilities
and will run a 12-week course on TCP/IP through UCLA, starting shortly.

Re: deb int command [7:324]

2001-04-13 Thread Mask Of Zorro

Conditional debugging is used to "filter" debug informtation such that you
are only viewing that which pertains to a specific interface rather than all
interfaces on the router. It only works with certain types of debugging, but
it enables you to debug stuff without crashing the router and without
getting tons of output that is not relevent to your particular
troubleshooting situation. It is a VERY useful approach to debugging.

Greetings all,

Have a question been driving my crazy, hope you guys can help me.

We're replacing a 55XX with a 6509 switch. Plugged the 6509 in the 55XX
switch so my customer can play around before we replace them (not the best
thing to do).

Network--55XX--6509---Novell client

Here's the issue:

When the user moves his machine to the 6509, he doesn't get Novell logon
promote. All IP connectivity is working. If he moves the client back to
the 55XX, it works fine. I've enabled portfast on the 6509, no joy. Can
someone help me with some pointers?

I hope my question is clear.

Thanks,

RE: Frame Relay switching [7:435]

2001-04-13 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Once again, to clarify:

The interface with the DCE end of the cable is the interface that requires
the clock rate configured.

This may be different than the interface that has the frame-relay intf-type
DCE

Frame relay intf-type dce does NOT require clock rate and does NOT require
the DCE end of the cable. The difference is the physical versus the logical
DCE.

If you were to configure two Cisco routers back to back NNI, one of those
routers would still require the clock rate set.

A minor point, but one most misunderstood.

Thomas,
On fr switch, dce side needs clock rate defined. If your interface is dte,
simply assign clock rate on the dce side of other router (but of couse you
must swap the dce-dte cable). No matter what you use, you may just use
frame intf-type dce on the fr switch. This gives you the ability to define
"frame route" which is what you want on the fr switch, right ?

Routing Performance Perspective [7:495]

2001-04-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am hoping someone could provide me some experienced perspective for the
following situation:

We utilize a somewhat 'new on the block' co-location facility, and while
they otherwise provide fantastic service I have some questions about the
routing performance.
Over the past few weeks, I have noticed a degradation of service on our
colocator-provided connection. (significant latency, and loss of packets)
As a result, I have been tracerouting our corporate offices from our
co-location facility (only 30 miles away) and it takes anywhere from 13 to
16 hops to reach it's destination. I have been doing this on a
semi-scientific basis (whenever I remember) and the results are usually the
same, but closer to 16 hops than 13.When I traceroute from our corporate
offices to our co-location facility the results are usually 6 to seven hops
using the same semi-scientific methodology as stated above.

My concerns are that end-user experience are being affected by apparent
sub-optimal routing.

The question I ask of the Grand-Master BGP geniuses is: do I have a valid
complaint regarding sub-optimal routing from our co-locator?

Thanks!
Matthew

LANE and CiscoWorks anomaly [7:499]

2001-04-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a 7206VXR running 12.1(4). When I push an ACL with CiscoWorks (CW),
the write back to my CW server kills the LANE client and my users are
isolated from the WAN until the LANE reestablishes (2-5 minutes). The ACL

I can tftp the ACL from my desktop with Cisco tftp server 1.1 without any
difficulty.

The 200BX code was upgraded and the problem still exists? Any ideas why IP
traffic would kill the LANE? I know that sounds funny...

Must the UNI version from the router to the ATM switch match? If they don't
match but must, why would the problem only manifest itself on the writeback
to the CW server?

I have noted the proc cpu jumps big with the ACL push - 60% SNMP usage!

But I do this to several (100+) routers a day without failures or pegging
the load on the router. Am considering downgrading the code to 12.1.1AT1...

Source Route questions [7:501]

2001-04-13 Thread KYAW KYAW KHINE

I've some questions that I can't clear up.
Can ppl shed some light on me?

1. In SRT, can a SRB enabled host with can talk to a
host without SRB?
2. In SR/TLB, what happen if MTU on token ring side is
bigger than 1500 bytes? Does SR/TLB bridge fragment or
request a smaller frame from the host?

Thanks..

AGS/MGS Questions [7:506]

2001-04-13 Thread Albert Lu

Hello Group,

I got a few questions in regards to AGS/MGS routers for a home lab

1. For most home lab scenarios, is 4 serial interfaces enough? Or is it
worthwhile to get more interfaces and cables to hook up 4+ routers to the FR
switch?

2. In regards FR switches, am I missing anything with using an MGS rather
than a 2500 series router? I am referring to the IOS functionality, since
MGS support 11.x or something, not 12.

3. Are AGS cards compatible with MGS? If I wanted to add a token ring
interface to an MGS, what do I look for?

4. If an MGS router has an ethernet and token ring interface, can that do
everything a 2513 can do in terms of bridging traffic from ethernet to token
ring?

5. Are there any cheaper alternatives to buying the cables for the MGS at
pacific cable? Maybe I could get the connectors and make one myself? I
haven't had much luck in locating connector kits for HDB60 and DB26.

Thanks for anyone's help and any other advice.

Albert

 Hey good advertisement.

Let me make a comment here. I know Rita, and I regarded this as a
legitimate request for information. There's a delicate line, I will
admit, about information and advertisement. I don't think there was
anything wrong with my posting a response to some reviews of my book,
 and adding some perspective.

If it was a request for info why the link to the course URL?
It is said that the cook is involved with making a BLT but the pig is
committed.
There is nothing wrong with doing business here, but seems like Rita is
already teaching an on-line course so why the research. Looking at the link,
Rita seems more than qualified to teach a course in entry level tcp/ip, yet
doesn't know the feasibility of on-line learning Howard lets look at it
this way:
What do you all think about learning by reading from a book. I would like to
get everybody's thoughts, OH by the way here is my book
Designing Addressing Architectures for Routing and Switching ISBN:
1578700604. You must of thought it was a good idea or you wouldn't have
written it. There you go a plug for a good book.
Then Rita sends back a reply refuting my opinion, so I guess I don't feel
that way. Then you do the same thing saying you can learn on-line but you
don't like a classroom setting. I don't like an on-line setting or classroom
setting that is still my opinion. so different people do have different
opinions. Would much rather learn by teaching oneself (guess that is why we
home school), also have taught adults and agree that I learn when in class
teaching others.
There are, again in my opinion, three ways to learn
1. repetition/memorization 2. facilitation 3. mentoring
generally children need mostly 1 and some 2
generally adults need mostly 3 and some 2
I don't see where an on-line course can provide much real mentoring. The
simple type 1 learning I feel on-line courses provide can be done by reading
either Perlman or Comer which are listed in the recommended texts yourself.
Rita, Howard do you have a mentor, are you mentoring anyone I can say yes to
both.
Even a boor like me could learn something from you Howard if you mentored me
but you have to guarantee a win on Jeopardy with Alex.
From a cash flow perspective on-line learning is great and much success to
y'all???
The "good advertisement" and the "on-line learning" issues are seperate, and
Rita, I apologize for being flip about your e-mail.
If you are still here do either of you know

Don

Personally don't think you can learn anything new on-line.

For some people, it may be the only option, even at the beginning.
They may be in isolated locations, can't go to regular classes, etc.
Classroom training is probably best for many people, although I tend
not to learn well as a student in a formal class (I teach them well
 and learn when I teach)

On-line learning is good for people finishing degrees not for entry
level.

Or in staying abreast of technology in general. Most of the real
work of the IETF is done via mailing lists.
Yeah but if you are on the IETF mailing list a lot is implied, start sending
those e-mails to someone who doesn't even have e-mail and see if they are up
to speed in no time :)

Is this part of a degree program.
That is a question.
 Don

Re: Traps [7:322]

2001-04-13 Thread dre

From reading
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/rtrmgmt/cw2000/dfm/
it appears that DFM is a lot easier to install/setup/configure than any
complex fault management NMS. It doesn't appear to be very complete,
the thresholding and polling is good, the traps look great out-of-the-box,
but it doesn't do event correlation and it doesn't support anything except
for Cisco devices. It's kind of somewhere in between an EMS and a
fault NMS.

I've actually got it humming on a good server with a gang of memory so no
problems there...using ie instead since netscape seems to have more bugs.

I'm in the CWFUN course right now and a new bonus to the LMS and RWAN is
the
new Defice Fault Manager... which I just found out is actually geared
towards sending TRAPS... it'll even alert you via e-mail and you can set
all
the polling/threshhold values as you see fit. It looks like a biatch to
get
to know though... anyone playing with this yet?

Well John, I guess I'll have to rely on my trusty pub for the Guinness...
 maybe some day!

 Cheers,

Yes, you'd think it should, but I don't think it can. I'm certain it
  can't deliver Guiness-on-Demand, unfortunately!

CW2000 seems to be more geared toward device management, software
management, and configuration management but not fault management like
HP Network Node Manager, for instance. That's probably why it doesn't
process traps. It doesn't really have an application that would use
them well. Besides, since it's all in java, unless you have a 1.5 GHz
machine with 8192GB RAM it would be too slow as a fault management
  platform. :-)

CW2000 is slw it's cool, but they need
to do something about the speed. Especially if using Netscape, good
grief. I could launch Ciscoview, walk downstairs and configure the
switch from the console port, walk back upstairs and the thing would
still be loading! That's not very productive. But if it could pour
Guiness, I suppose I wouldn't mind as much.

   "Jeff Duchin" 4/12/01 5:59:52 AM
Has anyone been able to manipulate CW2000 to process traps? I don't
understand the logic at all... it can accept and display Syslog
  messages
  from devices but not Traps.

So if anyone has pulled this off, please let me know as I'm trying to
  avoid
having another NMS just to send Traps to. You'd think by the price that
  it
would be able to do this and pour you a pint of Guinness at the same
  time!

  Any help appreciated,
  Jeff

 Hey Group,

I've been considering putting ATM in my home lab. Right now, I only have 4
2500 series routers and 1 4000 series router. As far as I can tell, the
Lightstream 100 ATM switches seem pretty reasonable (around $1250 on
ebay).
When it comes to buying ATM DTEs, do I have any other options other than
purchasing 3600 series routers and putting a NM-1A-OC3MM= modules into
them
? This solution would be very costly.

I also noticed people selling 7000 series routers with CX-AIP-SM modules.
This combo would be considerably less, but the question is: are CX-AIP-SM
modules compatible with Lightstream 100 OC3 modules? If they are, would I
be
missing anything if I went with the 7000 and not the 3600 ?

Are there any possibilities that I havn't thought of?

 Thanks in advance,
 Fred

you'd be best to open a ticket with TAC on this one. There may be a bug

Re: Too many broadcasts [7:453]

with all win98/win95 as clients. With the help of CWSI I have observed that
many a times the broadcast increases very much I experience lot of
response
delay in my network.
can I use the command:

switch (enable)# set port broadcast 0%

Setting the threshold to zero would be a misuse of the Cisco broadcast
suppression feature. I'm not sure Cisco even lets you set it to zero? It
would also cause network problems since you need broadcasts for such
important functions as dynamic address assignment, address and name
resolution, service location, and service advertisement. ARP, DHCP, Cisco
Discovery Protocol, RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, IGMP, and NetBIOS are some of the
many protocols that make use of broadcasts and multicasts.

The goal of the broadcast suppression feature is to prevent broadcast
storms, not broadcasts in general. A broadcast storm occurs when bugs in a
protocol-stack implementation or in a network configuration cause a station
to send hundreds or thousands of broadcasts per second. In the worst case,
the broadcasts from one station result in other stations also sending
broadcasts, much like a storm that builds upon itself.

Broadcasts can cause problems because they interrupt every device in the
broadcast domain, causing a CPU interrupt and requiring processing. On slow
CPUs, broadcast storms can be a serious problem. Broadcast storms can wreak
havoc on 100-Mbps Ethernet LANs with slow computers, because misbehaving
devices have an opportunity to send broadcasts really quickly at 100 Mbps.

You can configure broadcast suppression on a switch port to keep excessive
broadcasts from causing performance degradation on devices or LANs
reachable from that port. Cisco implements broadcast suppression in
software or hardware, depending on the switch platform. Software broadcast
suppression uses a packet-based method. Hardware broadcast suppression uses
a bandwidth-based method.

When a packet-based method is used to measure broadcast activity, the
threshold parameter is the number of broadcast or multicast packets
received over a one-second time period. When a bandwidth-based method is
used, the threshold parameter is the percentage of total available
bandwidth used by broadcasts or multicasts. In either case, if the
threshold is reached, the switch port cuts off broadcast and multicast
packets for the rest of that second. Because packet sizes vary,
bandwidth-based measurement is more accurate and more effective than
packet-based measurement.

As Howard often points out, broadcast packets are usually short and don't
use much bandwidth. In addition, most normal applications don't broadcast
thousands of times in a second. (For a station to use up most of 100 Mbps
with 64-byte packets, it would need to send approximately 200,000 times per
second, which is obviously abnormal.) So, when broadcasts start to use a
lot of your available bandwidth in a one-second interval, this probably
indicates a serious problem.

So, to make a long story short, a proper setting for the threshold
parameter would probably be more like 75%. The value depends on your actual
applications and traffic types.

Priscilla

Will this put any impact on my network like nodes won't be able to talk to
server or problem in finding the servers. I have also created VLAN's in
my
network to limit the broadcasts. Should I doit on all the ports...

many thanks in advance

Ethernet vs. Fast Ethernet [7:515]

Ok, very basic question, I apologize.
I know 10/100 is ethernet/fast ethernet, but what is the compatibility
issues? If you have a 10/100 device configured for ethernet (say a
2900xl switch) will it only go at 100 if specifically configured for
Fast Ethernet?
I can't find any literature that clearly spells the distinctions and
considerations.

 Don

Re: AGS/MGS Questions [7:506]

2001-04-13 Thread Circusnuts

More is better, but 4 is enough to accomplish your goals for sure...

than a 2500 series router? I am referring to the IOS functionality, since
MGS support 11.x or something, not 12

It's going to be a layer 2 box to be honest, version 10.0 is enough for
what the average person intends to use it for (Telco cloud). I used an
AGS+/ 11.0(22) in my lab (running as a peer router), with a 2501/ 11.3 had
no compatibility issues. I've used AGS's @ layer 2 (Frame-Relay Switching),
with 12.0 had no compatibility issues.

interface to an MGS, what do I look for?

Same... The AGS (Access Gateway Server) has 9 cards including processor
card environmental, MGS (Medium Gateway Server) has 4 cards including
processor (no environmental), CGS (???) has 2 cards including processor
(no environmental). For the most part, they're the same boards. Sometimes
the microcoding (Firmware) is different, but there is no way to tell (that I
know of) before hand... so you just chance it when you buy loose boards.
The AGS has a Cisco Bus (CSC-CCTL) for FDDI, 6 or more 10BaseT Ethernet,
HSSI.

everything a 2513 can do in terms of bridging traffic from Ethernet to
token
 ring?

Works great for this. You do not get NAT other 11.2 functions though...

pacific cable? Maybe I could get the connectors and make one myself? I
haven't had much luck in locating connector kits for HDB60 and DB26.

Pacific Cable really is the best for this. If you have questions, E-mail
the owner "Dave." The description of what you are looking for is "AGS"
(meaning HD26 on the Pacific site) to whatever you choose. The crossover
cables average about $50 each. I gave up trying to make the cables a long
time ago.

To sum it up, the _GS models (ABC routers as they're known) are very
inexpensive for what they deliver. For the offset in savings ($$$), you
must step back a little with technology service these old machines
differently. I started with an AGS running version 9.1. I told my wife I
didn't want to become an expert @ fixing it. 2 Years later, I have built
about a dozen AGS's/ MGS's/ CGS's for friends just replaced my last AGS
with a 4500.

Good Luck (you have my sympathy :o) !!!

 Hello Group,

I got a few questions in regards to AGS/MGS routers for a home lab

 1. For most home lab scenarios, is 4 serial interfaces enough? Or is it
worthwhile to get more interfaces and cables to hook up 4+ routers to the
FR
 switch?

 4. If an MGS router has an ethernet and token ring interface, can that do
everything a 2513 can do in terms of bridging traffic from ethernet to
token
 ring?

 5. Are there any cheaper alternatives to buying the cables for the MGS at
pacific cable? Maybe I could get the connectors and make one myself? I
haven't had much luck in locating connector kits for HDB60 and DB26.

Thanks for anyone's help and any other advice.

Virtual Token Ring Interface [7:519]

2001-04-13 Thread John Neiberger

A while back we were discussing home lab equipment purchases. While on
the topic of token ring, someone suggested that it was not necessary to
buy any routers with token ring interfaces because we could make use of
the virtual-tokenring interface.

Being new to token ring and its related configurations, I'm wondering
if any of you have heard of ways to use this successfully in a home lab
(or any lab, for that matter.) If I could practice with token ring and
SRB without shelling out more bucks for two more routers I'd be quite
pleased.

any thoughts, hints, tips, or suggestions?

Thanks,

RE: Routing Performance Perspective [7:495]

2001-04-13 Thread Kane, Christopher A.

Matt,

I don't think you would be out of line asking the ISP why so many hops are
needed. I would run traceroutes from hosts and the WAN terminating router
first and make sure you are routing well inhouse. Identify if/where packets
are being dropped. Make note of all the hops and if/where the latency is
being introduced. Is any hop in particular constantly giving higher times.
Then call your ISP and send them copies of your traceroutes as proof. Are
you responsible for your own router? If so, check the BGP tables, are your
table versions incrementing often? What sites do you route to most often?
Are those sites on the ISP's network or do they hand-off the traffic at a
peering point? This greatly introduces latency and can make for difficult
discussions regarding peering conditions from one ISP to another. Often
people criticize the larger ISPs. But it's nice when the source and
destination are on the same ISP network. You can then expect them to carry
your traffic in a timely manner. And they can't cop out saying it's the
other ISPs fault.

Coming from the ISP world, I always appreciate when the customer does their
homework rather than automatically blaming the ISP.

All IMHO and HTH,
Chris

Subject: Routing Performance Perspective [7:495]

Thanks!

VLAN Resources [7:523]

2001-04-13 Thread Sammi

Hi all,
I have two new 2900xl switches, and the CD documentation that came
with them are both inoperative. After install the "view documentation"
link does zip, hourglass for a couple of seconds then nothing.

What I need is good reading material for configuring VLANs and
scenarios where they would be beneficial.

Book suggestion, links, would be much appreciated.

2001-04-13 Thread West, Karl

hmmm I am not sure what your asking but in any case, most devices that are
10/100 do auto negotiate, meaning they can go 10 or 100. If you have a Cisco
2900x1 switch and you want your port to only do 10 (Ethernet) then you can
set the port for that speed.( i.e turn auto negotiation off)

Ok, very basic question, I apologize.
I know 10/100 is ethernet/fast ethernet, but what is the compatibility
issues? If you have a 10/100 device configured for ethernet (say a
2900xl switch) will it only go at 100 if specifically configured for
Fast Ethernet?
I can't find any literature that clearly spells the distinctions and

RE: Ethernet vs. Fast Ethernet [7:515]

2001-04-13 Thread Irwin Lazar

The default configuration for most devices is to auto-sense, that is if a
10/100 device is talking with another 10/100 device, they will sense that
they are both capable of 100 Mpbs operation and then operate at the higher
speed (they will also sense full/half duplex).

Most NICs, routers and switches let you manually specificy speed and duplex
if you so desire.

I know a few years ago several interface cards, especially those from Intel,
had a heck of a time auto negotiating with Cisco Catalyst 5xxx's, but I'd
imagine these problems are resolved by now. (It shows you how long it has
been since I've actually touched a real network. :-) )

back to back cables [7:527]

VPN Tunnel-in-a-Tunnel [7:528]

2001-04-13 Thread Urooj's Hi-speed Internet

Hi All,
I am in a situation where I need to VPN-tunnel into a private network using
IPSec, and again use another VPN Gateway (located in the private network) to
VPN-tunnel into a second private network, again using IPSec. In effect, I
have to use two different VPN-clients on my PC, and logically, it becomes a
situation of tunnel-in-a-tunnel. I hope I am able to explain what I am
trying to accomplish. Let me also clarify that I have no other path into the
second network other than through the first network.

Now my questions to the list are:

1. Any disadvantages of such a setup ?
2. Any better and less-involved alternates ?
3. Any other things that I need to be aware of.
4. Any Internet resources that someone is aware of which deals with the
specific situation.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Off-topic: On-line course in TCP/IP [7:480]-note to Howard [7:529]

2001-04-13 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

MIT announced recently that it will make nearly all course materials
available free on the World Wide Web:

http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/nr/2001/ocw.html

I don't think this means course credit, but it will certainly be a good
learning opportunity. Of course, being MIT, the course material will
probably be very hard with lots of arcane theory.

I have taken and developed Web-based courses. They can be great, especially
if there is a discussion board with other students and the teacher. I
belive for such classes to work, they also must include some form of
self-assessment. Students must be given the opportunity to determine if
they are getting it, and if not, pointers to where they can go for more
info or exercises they can try in order to learn the material better.
Pull-down-menu tests, multiple-choice tests, true/false tests, short-answer
tests with links to good answers, etc., are all possible with HTML and good
things to add to a Web-based course.

By the way, there is a lot of concern at universities about whether online
learning is a good thing or not. I'm sure Dr. Puzmanova's query was
authentic and that she was not just advertising her course. She probably
just needed some comments on her plans. That's market research, not
advertising. Why do people take such a cynical view? And why don't they
show respect to professors from UCLA? I wonder about young people today. ;-)

Do I even dare ask why you are allowed to use two regular cables but not
a back to back cable?

Hmm... while writing that I just thought of one good reason. Whenever
I order a back-to-back cable I usually get an RS-232 cable. This would
tend to limit the clock rate between the two routers. If I needed a
higher speed I'd have to find a V.35 back to back cable which seem to be
harder to find.

If you want V.35:

CAB-V35MT=
CAB-V35FC=

If you want RS-232:

I've also noticed that if you don't use the intf-dce command on the switch,

Re: Reset Flash Memory [7:535]

2001-04-13 Thread John Neiberger

On a 3640 you can upgrade the IOS using tftp but not xmodem. So, you'll
need IP connectivity to a tftp server. Here are the instructions I give
to the people I work with. Make whatever changes are necessary to make
this work for you. These instructions were originally for upgrading the
flash and then loading a new IOS.

Before you even start, make sure the IOS you want to install on the
router exists on the laptop!

1. Open router, remove existing FLASH, insert new FLASH
2. Turn router power on. Send a break signal to get to Rommon mode.
3. Connect laptop to switch/hub and take note of its IP address
4. Set the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for the
router:

rommon IP_ADDRESS=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(Same subnet as laptop)
rommon IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
rommon DEFAULT_GATEWAY=
rommon TFTP_SERVER=
rommon TFTP_FILE=

5. Begin the TFTP download:

rommon tftpdnld (must be lower case)

Depending on the situation, it may be necessary to set the speed/duplex
setting of the Ethernet port. For this, do the following:

   rommon FE_SPEED_MODE = x

0 = 10 Mbps, half duplex
1 = 10 Mbps, full duplex
2 = 100 Mbps, half duplex
3 = 100 Mbps, full duplex

6. Type 'i' or 'reset' to restart the router with the new image.

Re: Switching. [7:551]

2001-04-13 Thread Jason J. Roysdon

Congrats!

Most people don't realize that Routing is much harder than they think it's
going to be. It's a test on routing protocols, not routed protocols. Just
be sure you've read up on the exam outline (maybe pull down the outline from
the previous version of the test, as it breaks down different areas in more
detail than the new exam outlines do) and know what to expect.

When I know someone has had hands on router experience with T1s, ISDN, Frame
Relay, etc., I usually suggest they go after the Remote Access (sounds like
RAS/dial-up stuff), which is what they already have experience with.

Re: RE: How to determine CIR and increase CIR of FR? [7:554]

2001-04-13 Thread Jason J. Roysdon

However, one thing to consider is that CIR at any given point doesn't mean
that you have that end-to-end CIR. Of course, without at least having the
port speed at your given CIR, you'll never go faster, but having the local
FR switch's CIR from 'show frame map' is useful.

Consider this:
PFI-LIV-3640#sh frame map
Serial3/0.20 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 20(0x14,0x440), broadcast, BW =
64096
  status defined, active
Serial3/0.22 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 22(0x16,0x460), broadcast, BW =
64000
  status defined, active
Serial3/0.19 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 19(0x13,0x430), broadcast, BW =
128000
  status defined, active
Serial3/0.18 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 18(0x12,0x420), broadcast, BW =
384000
  status defined, active
Serial3/0.17 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 17(0x11,0x410), broadcast, BW =
128000
  status defined, active
Serial3/0.23 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 23(0x17,0x470), broadcast, BW =
64000
  status defined, active
Serial3/0.21 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 21(0x15,0x450), broadcast, BW =
64096
  status defined, active

What's the total CIR for Serial3 into the cloud? If you total it, it's
896K. That's way over-provisioned as this customer only has 8 64K CIR (128K
BE) links, which means the max they can pump CIR from the endpoints is 512
CIR. With Burst it's 1024, but since the far ends are guaranteed anything
beyond CIR, it's not really that worth while.

Of course, I'll have to call the FR carrier Monday and find out what is
really provisioned (always the best way, at least that way you're getting it
from the horse's mouth, even if they're lying). The customer has no real
clue, as usual.

Also, some of the FR switches at the remote ends show BW statements, but
more than half (the more rural areas) do not, so it's only useful if you've
got a newer route that supports it.

your CIR (Committed information rate) is supplied by your SP ...you and

agree how much you can have( depending on how much you pay)
usually the person setting up your router sets the "BANDWIDTH" command
to the CIR+ BR (burst rate) I.E how high you CAN go up to for a limited

But it is required to hold the CCNP certification. So if you take all 4
CCNP tests and haven't passed the CCNA test, you hold no Cisco Networking
certs until you first pass the CCNA, at which point you'll be a CCNP. Seems
silly to do that, might as well get a cert in the first place since you'll
have to eventually to have the final cert.

the PVC. Just the make sure you are clear with my senario, here is the
topology:

(DTE)RouterA(DTE)DCE-RouterB-DTE-DCE-RouterC-DCEDTE-
RouterE-DTE

- RouterB is the Frame-Relay switch with clockrate on DCE interface. DLCI #
and bandwitdh is assigned on its DTE interface.
- Router C is also a Frame-Relay switch that map DTEs of RouterB and routerE
(which I had it worked).
- I am trying to map DTE of routerA to DTE of routerB.

You might be questioning why I am setting up it this way... It's because
each of my routers only has 2 serial ports, and that I have a limit number

Use GRE to tunnel the IPX. Better thing to do is make them upgrade to

If it's what I think that you are looking for, this type of cable does
exist, I have used them between btb 26xx'x and 25xx's.

Among other places, you can find one at -- www.pacificcable.com (use the
QuickNav drop-down to go to the 'smart serial' section)

 Here's a pic to confirm:

has
the DCE on the wic2t end, if you want it one the 60 side, you will need to

I'm not affiliated with Pacific Cable, but I have ordered from them and
 would do so again.

Re: CCIE Candidate versus CCIE [7:426]

2001-04-13 Thread Jason J. Roysdon

I've an interesting, well, I don't know what to call it, so I'll just state
it.

I know two Cisco SE CCIE's that recently passed the lab (within the last
year). Both are knowledgeable, but nowhere near what I'd expect, and very
lacking in areas I know well (just stuff I deal with all the time). My
boss, who I'd place as at least twice as knowledgeable, has taken the lab
twice and failed both times (made it into day two the second time).

I guess what I'm getting at, but not trying to start a flame-fest, is that
I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with Cisco employee CCIE's? I
mean, if I was Cisco, I'd almost want to set the bar higher for my
employees, and not lower. Of course, if you have an inside track with other
CCIE's mentoring you, that can't hurt, but still, I'd expect it to stick.

Neighborhood December 22, 1999 number 5444 was issued

Neighborhood May 28, 2000 number 5917 was issued

In other words, give or take a few, there are roughly 100 new CCIE's
awarded
each month. This appears to have been constant at least since I've been
 tracking.

Figure that many of these are experienced people with solid backgrounds,
and
not just newbies taking bootcamp courses. There are a number of reasons
why
so many people are in the pipeline, so to speak. That's another topic
 altogether.

It still takes on the average three attempts to pass. It still takes an
experienced person two years of prep time to make the grade.

A good part of the backlog is due to too many unqualified people going
through the process. ( yes I recently failed. But I won't be showing my
face
around there again 'til December. There are others who try to get in as
often as possible, ready or not. )

Does this help put things into perspective?

 Hello Everyone

Just wondering how many people are passing the lab
 test recently.
This is current head count of CCIE's according to
 cisco 5595*.
Does anyone in a group remembers how many were there
 last year.
The wait for the lab extends is almost double of what
it was last year which is clear indicator more people
are trying. I am just curious if there is also clear
indicator of candidates increase in number of CCIE's.

Actually, the IP helper command is placed on the
interface that is recieving the broadcasts. Now you
have to decide which router is supposed to recieve the
broadcasts. But in usual case, Clients usually try to
communcate with the PDC for authentication and other
stuffs. So, i think it would work to configure ip
helper-address w.x.y.z on the ethernet interface of
router 1 only (where w.x.y.z is the ip address of your
PDC, but if you have multiple PDCs then you have to
give the directed-broadcast address and also have to
 use ip directed-broadcast command).

 I hope this will work

i don`t mean to be rude ,but i was essential correct..

if you set the bandwidth command to 64k and you have a CIR of 128K yo
 will
only get 64K...But as my good friends have pointed out the default is
1.544kb..but i was just trying to make that point stand out that
 it`s
the serivce provider who makes the call about the info rate...

Baloney. You'll still get minimally 128k. Thus, if you set
 interface serial 0
   bandwidth 64000

and you have a CIR of 128k, you will still get 128k (plus bursts up to
the
data rate of the frame relay port). The bandwidth command does *nothing
physically limiting* to the interface. It merely acts as the reference
number for load calculations on show interfaces and for the metric
calculation for dynamic routing protocols. The txload and rxload
fractions
will be inaccurate, though, with this configuration.

I`m sorry if i`m bieng ANAL about this i just wanted myself to be
 clear..

ohhh no the bandwidth statement in the interface is *manually*
 entered
(defaulted at 1544 Kbit for a serial interface), and is used to
 calculate:
   1. metrics for routing protocols, and
   2. bandwidth utilization in the "show interfaces" display
so it's important to have it set correctly.

Some frame relay carriers (Sprint and PacBell come to mind) do not
 transmit
their CIR, so 'show frame-relay map' doesn't display their CIR.

The frame relay provider does need to be contacted to increase CIR.
 Higher
CIR usually translates into a cost increase for the circuit.

Here's an explanation of EIR - also see
   http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/frame/1108fr2.html and
   http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/frame/1206fr1.html

EIR is the difference between the port speed of the frame relay
service
 and
the CIR. The port speed is set by the frame relay service provider,
 and
   may
be lower than the maximum interface speed - for example, on a T-1
 circuit,
the provider could provide a 384kbps port and a 128k CIR. In this
 case,
   the
EIR = 256k, and it would be wise to set the interface bandwidth to
384k
(bandwidth 384 on the serial interface) to match the port speed. And
 the
port speed is usually the maximum rate at which one can oversubscribe
 the
PVC (that is, it is usually the frame relay burst rate)

The moral of the story - just because there is an *access circuit* at
a
particular transmission rate does not assure you that you burst at
that
rate. The interface is rate-limited to the port speed that was
ordered
   from
   the frame relay carrier.

BGP's Next-hop-self [7:568]

2001-04-13 Thread Fred Danson

Hey Group,

I'm doing a little BGP lab here in my home, and I'm running into problems

Here's my topology:

r2503 --EBGP-- r2523 --IBGP-- r2504 --IBGP-- r2501
AS200 AS100 AS100 AS100

r2503 has no problem advertising its loopback (1.1.1.1/24) to r2523 through
their EBGP connection. r2523 then sends the 1.1.1.1/24 route to r2504 while
changing the next hop to r2523. The problem is that r2504 cannot send the
1.1.1.1/24 router to r2501. I assumed that the next-hop-self command would

When pvc's are reported "inactive" it means that you do not have end to end
connectivity.

Thanks All for all the support! I went over all the setting: clockrate on
the DCE interface, cable, keepalive, lmi-type, frame-relay map... and
everything seems to be OK. However, I still got the "INACTIVE" status for

It's because
each of my routers only has 2 serial ports, and that I have a limit number
of crossover cables with different types... Again, Thanks All!

Hi All - I am setting up my 2501 router as a frame-relay switch. I
succeed
when setting both of its serial as DCE interfaces. However, I failed to
have one serial acts as a DCE and one acts as a DTE. Is it possible to
specify a switch as a "frame-relay" switch and have one of its serial
acting
as a DTE interface (and assign IP address...) ??? Thanks All
