Email access over the Internet [7:70750]

2003-06-16 Thread McCallum, Robert
Folks,

I have a problem in my work where for some strange reason I cant access my
email over the internet from a hotel. The reason for me not being able to
access email is because, oddly enough, the hotel uses NAT. We use
checkpoint firewalls and I use securemote software. Now I believe its
something to
do with the secure ID token that I use and when I type this in there is some
form of checksum which is checked at the server end. This of course has
changed due to the Nat going on.

has anybody out there experience this as well and know what the simple
solution is. I'm sure there is a simple solution and its just my company
politics which is causing me the problems.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Related question to the above thread.

As discussed, each routing protocol will maintain its list of prefixes
that it knows about. A route selection process runs that considers the
routes from each routing process and puts the best into the routing
table. (best being defined by the route selection process).

show ip route will show those routes selected and in the routing
table.

Is there an equivalent command that will show me the same information
(prefix/length, next hop/interface) for all the prefixs known by a
routing protocol? Suppose I'm running OSPF and BGP on a box and I
wanted to see what prefix/lengths are being carried in each routing
protocol. What commands would I use to see this?

Thanks

RE: prefix lists .. [7:34312]

2002-02-04 Thread McCallum, Robert

gt = greater than so gt /23 = subnets with a mask of above /23.
lt = less than so lt /17 = subnets with a mask less than /17.

so using prefix lists can you give me an answer which would do the
following:-

1. Deny subnets of class B networks
2. Deny supernets of Class C networks
3. Deny networks starting 193.x.x.x
4. permit all else.

For the 1st one ask yourself what makes a class B network a Class B
network? From this you will find out what your /x prefix should be. Then
what mask = subnets of a class B network gt or lt.

and so on

idle-timoue to 180 seconds--the router will keep the interface open for 180
seconds and then drop it for 9 seconds. I set it to 55 seconds and it did
the same timeout after 55 seconds--9 second drop. This only seems to happen
when the remote router is a cisco router. I have tried debug isdn

can try would be much appreciated or on debug options that would narrow it
for me...

RE: Multicast over Frame relay [7:34098]

2002-02-03 Thread McCallum, Robert

John,

I actually tried the manual RP on R5 and couldn't get it to work so went
with the R5 being the AUTo-rp and R5 being the mapping agent-still
didn;t work. So I then went and moved the mapping agent to R6 still
didn't work. SO, I then removed and went back to the manual RP this time
however
I put a multicast join statement on R3.

For those of you who don;t have the lab it goes like this (IP addresses are
different)

224.1.1.1 E0-R13-E1-E0-R6-s0/0(frame)-s0/0(frame)R5-s0/0.1(frame
p-p)-s0/0.1(r3)-E0 (my multicast group.ie 224.3.3.3)

R5 was configured as the manual RP so everyone knew how to get to the RP
address.

Now R3 ping 224.1.1.1 NOT A CHANCE
R5 ping 224.1.1.1 NOT A CHANCE
R6 ping 224.1.1.1 NAE problems

Now for the really odd part

R13 ping 224.3.3.3 NAE problems
R6 ping 224.3.3.3 NAE problems
R5 ping 224.3.3.3 NAE probelms

Conclusion : I hate multicasting How can it possibly work one way but
not the other??

It's funny, I had the *exact* problem with bootcamp lab 20. I
eventually got it to work but I had all sorts of problems. I wasn't
able to get Auto-RP to work at all, for some reason, so I had to
manually define it. Still, I really had some issues that irritated me
but they were so intermittent I wasn't able to nail them down.

For instance, toward the beginning of my configurations I was able to
ping the multicast address from R5. I thought that was pretty cool so I
moved on to--IIRC--R1 and R3. I couldn't get them to work so I went
back to R5 and discovered it could no longer ping the multicast
address.

One thing I kinda remember--someone please correct me if I'm wrong--is
that you need to have a single RP for the multicast group. When I first
started the configuration, each subnet had an RP and that didn't seem to
work. Specifically, on the R6--R13 subnet I didn't assign an RP at all,
which caused a problem. Then I made R13 the RP and it still didn't
work. Then I made R5 the RP for everyone and that seemed to resolve my
issue.

I really need to get cracking on this multicast stuff, though. I feel
like I'm just scratching the surface.

My

Some telcos have some basic oversubscription requirements, designed more so
that they can sell you more bandwidth than as a real practical requirement.

Here in California, for example, the local telco permits no more than a 2
for 1 oversubscription.

So if you have 20 spokes, each at 256K CIR, then you MUST have a minimum
2.56 megabit CIR at your center ( fractional DS3 or ATM ), for example.

I believe the reasoning is that the telco does not want a lot of calls
complaining about their circuits when the problem is overutilization of
bandwidth. And they want to sell you more, of course. ;-

Does anyone know what telnet client you get to use in the lab? That could
make a BIG difference in how well you are able to work?

I had asked for some honest advice as to what router models I needed to
'simulate' the actual lab at home but alas...some people seem to have
wasted their time in replying some irrelevant answers. Sad..

RE: PPP link negotiation problem [7:31132]

what about ppp chap sent-username ?

Subject: PPP link negotiation problem [7:31132]

I'm working through the different ways one can configure CHAP
authentication between two routers over a PPP serial link.

If I configure ppp encap and ppp chap authentication and both sides
of the link and use the global:

username password

for identification, the link comes up and IPCP is established. The
routers have hostnames defined to be rtr-2505 and rtr-2514.

When I try to use the simpler CHAP config, where one can encode
in the interface directly the same hostname and password, I see
the error:

PPP Serial0: Using alternative CHAP hostname something
PPP Serial0: CHAP Challenge id=14 received from something
PPP Serial0: ignoring challenge with local name

On both rtrs I have the following defined on the serial interface:
ppp encap
ppp authentication chap
ppp chap hostname something
ppp chap password else

there are no usernames defined globally.

Ideas?

Thanks

Does EIGRP have a command to allow for routing over a DDR network, like the
OSPF Demand statement or snapshot routing. How do you make the routes not
age out with EIGRP over DDRThanks

RE: 2509 connect fail Debug [7:29349]

2001-12-17 Thread McCallum, Robert

Sean,

Try 2 things. do a show users and see if you have already tied up that
line. If so do a clear line (then the number). If that doesn't work you
might have to do a stop bits=1 on your terminal line as sometimes the
default is 1.5 stop bits.

Split Horizon and Frame [7:27668]

2001-11-29 Thread McCallum, Robert

Folks,

Quick question just to make sure I have things correct in my head. Please
correct me if I'm wrong.

O.k.

FOR IPX every frame interface (physical, point, multipoint) split horizon is
enabled by default.

FOR IP physical frame interface split horizon is disabled and for point and
multipoint split horizon is enabled by default.

The above on ATM interfaces is it the same rules??

Cheers

CCIE One Day Lab FAIL [7:26835]

2001-11-20 Thread McCallum, Robert

O.k. I sat the exam last week and failed but by not a lot. Silly mistakes
killed me. For those of you who have still to experience the one day lab
then please read ahead.

Mostly everyone on this list stated that there was no time to do the lab or
check anything. I found this to be so untrue it was unreal. Most people on
the lab finished with an hour to go and I had more time than this to check
and try to get the annoying things that didn't work to work (although I
failed to get two things working)... So from that, my advice is if you are
stuck on something, move on and work your way through the workbook. Once
you get to the end you should have plenty time to fix (if you can) the
problems you left.

From my experience of Brussels everything was there. The proctors turned up
when they should, answered any questions you asked, there were icons for
each element you had to configure, there was paper, there were pens,
pencils, sharpeners and erasers. Lunch was horrible although I don't think
anyone was to bothered about lunch, so if you are a person who cannot go
without lunch bring a packed lunch with you (just don't put your answers in
your lunch box !!).

All in all enjoy the experience and READ the questions (even the smallest
detail). I am resetting in Feb next year and I reckon the pressure will
really be on then. Most people fail 1st time anyway is what I can say this
time but next time ??

RE: Virutal Link Authentication [7:25837]

2001-11-12 Thread McCallum, Robert

Bill,

That good old issue of virtual link authentication. I think everyone who
has or is sitting their lab soon has been through what you are
experiencing. A quick search of the archives would find your answer in no
time as this topic has been discussed beyond the scope but to be nice to you
the quick
version is.

11.2 you need to put area 0 authentication message digest on the other end
of the virtual links router (you are extending area 0 to that router after
all).. now in some cases you do not have to put any auth on the virtual link
but I would say that is wrong so you should do
area 21 virtual-link 1.1.1.1 message-digest 1 md5 hello. This will then work.

12.1 you do not need to put area 0 auth on the receiving router. For the
virtual link you do
area 21 virtual-link 1.1.1.1 authentication message-digest
message-digest-key 1 md5 hello.

When you mix and match the IOS versions you have to think on the lowest
level in other words do it the way it works in 11.2.

I have been working on some VL labs with and without different types of
authentication. Now the first issue I have is some of my routers are
running 11.2 and some are running 12.1. I suspect my issue resides in
the differences in IOS, but what I am seeing is when I try to use
message-digest I am not able to authenticate my VL.

My debug output on both routers states Rcv pkt from 10.0.1.22,
Ethernet0 : Mismatch Authentication type. Input pa

Any help would be appreciated.

other with one Bri interface be configured so that it brings this link up
between a-b and disconnet when finished, ( I am aware the disconnect
part will be taken care by isdn dial time-out command). Any pointers or

RE: BGP Confederations [7:24953]

2001-11-01 Thread McCallum, Robert

I have just configured the scenario below on my lab and it appears that the
internal BGP peers do not need to know the Confed id or peers. If I look at
the bgp table all the correct routing info is getting passed i.e. an
internal bgp router still sees in its bgp routing table that networks have
came from certain confeds i.e. as path = (8) (7) 254 23. I believe now that
you only have to configure confed and peers only on the borders.

correct me if I am wrong here.

To Passive or Not to Passive [7:24771]

2001-10-31 Thread McCallum, Robert

Dear all,

Before I take the leap into the lab (2 weeks to go now), I have a question
which has dogged me for a while now. Scenario below.

Router 1 has the following interfaces, Lo0, Eth0/0, S0/0, S0/1 and say
Fast0/1.

Router 2 has the following interfaces Lo0, Lo1, Eth 0/1, S0/0.

Between Router 1 (s0/0) and Router 2 (s0/0) we are running say OSPF. On
router 1 (e0/0 and s0/1) we are running RIP.
On Router 2 (e0/1 and lo1) we are also running Rip.

Router 1 (lo0, s0/1) and Router 2 (lo0) are running Eigrp.

Now for the questions

1. On router 1 OSPF process is running Q: should I put lo0,e0/0, fast0/1
and s0/1 as passive interface ??? This worries me quite a bit as the
argument of if you dont put the network command under ospf then ospf will
not run on that interface...BUT I have been told that you should ALWAYS put
every
in use interface into passive if it is not being used under the routing
process.

2. This is not a question but a sanity check that for EIGRP and RIP then
the norm rules of passive interfaces apply.

Thanks for anyones help in clearing this annoying matter up.

Hi all
Have anyone encountered the situation that the 3640 router rebooted itself

I don't think it is the crashed flash memory because I booted off the flash
card and it showed the same symptom.
This is the first time I have ever seen this kind of issue.

Thanks in adv.

redistribution you gotta love it.

You are obviously redistributing a network which resides in igrp into ospf
which in turn is redistributing back to igrp which then redistributes it
back into ospf yada yada yada. As chuck states check the networks which you
want to redistribute and make sure that this is indeed the only ones that
area being redistributed.

Once again, this behaviour is NOT strange

IGRP is behaving EXACTLY the way it is supposed to behave.

Re-think your summary address statements AND your route maps, or rather the
access-lists your route maps use.

Hi guys.

facing some strange IGRPOSPF redistribution problem.

Router ISDN2 is ASBR ,running IGRP with FR and running ospf with rest of
network.

Now problem is that I am able to redistribute IGRP into OSPF and can see the
IGRP routes as OSPF external in ospf domain but not able to get
redistributed OSPF routes into IGRP.

Offcourse, No static/default routes are allowed so I have summarize ospf
routes into C class,(Same as IGRP major interface)using summary address
command .But still not able to get these routes redistributed.

When I tried by using Static routes pointing to null 0,IT WORKED

The problem I observed is that although I have put SUMMARY ADDRESS commands
for network 152.1.1.0 152.1.2.0 ,which are required to redistribute into
IGRP,I CANT see them as summary routes in ISDN2 router wHY??

Any one can help Please. All config attached

Hi guys,

I am still revolving around an stupid DLSW confusion.
I found in many 3rd party labs and other configurations that they are
using SOURCE-ROUTE BRIDGE x command even when configuring DLSW+ between 2
ethernet segments..

Do we really need to put this command even when we are not dealing with
TR??

I am not agree with this

Any idea?

Thanks.

Simple question that I'm obviously having a brain fart on.

How to remove an entry from an ACL?

Is there a specific command or technique for removing an entry. In testing
I have noticed that the no command infront of the statement will delete
the entire ACL.

I'm sure someone can provide the answer pretty quickly.

Pardon my ingnorance. Kind of blanking out on this for some reason.

RE: Quick CCIE Written Question [7:16797]

2001-08-22 Thread McCallum, Robert

In a nut shell yes and no. i.e.

Admin distance is the winner by means that the lower the admin distance the
better, so a route learned from EIGRP will get into the routing table
despite having a longer match route which was learned from say OSPF. BUT if
you have two routes learned from the same admin distance then the longest
match ALWAYS wins.

Basically once the route is in the routing table then the longest match is
the outmost winner.

You can disable inverse arp on each interface on the spokes and then clear
the cache. That should prevent the spokes from seeing the unused dlci's,
but will require a static map of dlci to ip for each dlci you want to use.

Is there any way If we can get rid of these DLCIS on the spokes.i.e to

What do you want us to do for you? Firstly go onto the CCO and read about
route-maps.

For your example this would be relatively easy. Apply a route map on one
interface and make sure that it will only accept traffic from your LAN0 and
vice versa. It is easy but you will have to show that you have actually
tried to understand route maps yourself rather than just look for the
answer.

I don't know if anybody has any ideas. I am currently in the process of
migrating from a routed network where a 4500 is the core to a VLAN network
using a 3640, 5500 and 2900's. I am trying to make the migration as simple
and painless as possible by not having to everything in one hit. All users
are at the moment in VLAN1 on the same 5500 that is going to be segmented as
VLAN 10 thru 60 later on.

I have setup a small test so far. I have a 2900XL with an ISL trunk to the
5500 and the 3640 is ISL routing for that VLAN (20). I would like to be able
to move users in small groups from VLAN1 to VLAN20 but still giving them
full contectivity to VLAN1. The 3640 is sharing routes with the old 4500 and
knows how to get to everything. When I put a user onto a port on the 2900 in
VLAN20 it is not able to connect to anything.

Any ideas...

modify it and load it back up, and I know you can use the more command to

making it active? I want to modify the file and then copy it into the

anyone knows of a way. Thanks.

Hi All,

I have a question on no bridge xx route ip command, what I want is to
disable IP routing inside the bridge group, but I found after I use this
command, router still routes the IP packets.

My configuration is as follows:

 .2172.10.37.0/24.1.1172.10.36.0/24 .2
R7 R3 R6

The configuration on R7 and R6 as usual, no bridge group is configured on
them, on R3, I have(stripped):

bridge irb
!
interface GigabitEthernet1/0/0
 ip address 172.10.37.1 255.255.255.0
 no ip route-cache distributed
 no ip mroute-cache
 load-interval 30
 negotiation auto
 bridge-group 1
!
interface FastEthernet2/0/0
 ip address 172.10.36.1 255.255.255.0
 no ip route-cache distributed
 no ip mroute-cache
 half-duplex
 bridge-group 1
!
bridge 1 protocol ieee

But on R7 I still could ping 172.10.36.2, after I use no ip routing, then
it
failed, so my question what is the relationship between no bridge xx route
ip and no ip routing, why after I run the first command, ip routing is
still enabled in the bridge group?

Thanks,
Jerry

Amazing. three clicks and a couple of scroll downs and voila!

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/ccie_program/ccie_present.html

according to this link, as of April 30 there were... well, I'll let you
discover for yourself.

As for the most recent number issued, that changes on a daily basis. Last I
saw was #7515 who announced today that he passed last Friday. Not all CCIE's
make their announcements on the newsgroups I track. I do know that roughly
100-12 people per month are awarded their CCIE. I have information going
back to August 1999 to support that.

RE: CCIE written [7:7411]

2001-06-07 Thread McCallum, Robert

Do them all, although please don't expect a lot of questions being in the
exam. I done all three as well as practice. I reckon I had around 5 - 6
questions which were identical BUT these 5 - 6 questions were ridiculously
easy anyway. This IS a tough exam testing you on the principles of the
protocols. Simple things like TCP sequencing can get you unstuck if you
don't know it. I also bought the book CCIE prep guide but it arrived after
I had taken the exam so I don't know how much help it would have been but
other candidates have found it very helpful.

RE: Comments on my Home Lab! [7:7108]

2001-06-04 Thread McCallum, Robert

I presume that the 8/16 is flash and memory. If it is then I would say that
you need a good few more routers. Although you do configure a token ring
switch in the lab I have heard that it is a very minimal config on this.
The other switch in use is the cat 5000, so there is no need to have any
more switches but plenty need to have at least another 4 routers. My lab
has 9 routers and on some of the Bootcamp labs that is just enough.

For lab scenarios buy the bootcamp labs there is quite simply no better!

address it tells me that on interfaces intended for ISL or 802.10 can be
configured on this interface.
My question is, can I setup mutliple sub interfaces on my router ?
If so, can I route between them by using either static routes or a
routing protocol, (or by default coz they are directly connected should
I do nothing ?)

Thanks all in advance

RE: Multiple commands on a menu command [7:6510]

2001-05-31 Thread McCallum, Robert

It overwrites the commands that are there already and appends the commands
if they aren't there! It is as if you have went into conf t then went int
fast0/0.91 then type shut then cntrl Z. SO any commands are fair game here.

One thing to note that these commands are issued even though the user hasn't
typed in the enable password.!!

I have a 2611 with a t0/0 an e0/0 and a s0/0.

The router was set up by someone else who made it a source bridge using the
s0/0 interface. I am trying to interface a tiny network of 5 PC's that are
on a 3com switch to that e0/0 interface. I gave the interface an IP address
on the same schema as the 5 pc's and gave the no shut command on it. I get a
link light on both the switch and the router. When I do a show interface
e0/0 it says the interface is up and the line protocol is up. I can ping my
own e0/0 interface but every other pc on the network can not ping that
interface, nor can the router ping any other computer.

I also typed in ip routing to see if that would fix it, but it did not. I
shut the interface and no shut the interface a few times, but still no help.

I know you are all much much smarter than me.. so PLEASE teach me the errors
of my ways.

Check out the cisco website. I am afraid I don't have the link but it is

Check the archives as someone not that long ago asked the same question and

Does anybody know of any really good literature about IS-IS? Not just about
how IS-IS works, but sample designs and configs, and so forth. Ultimately,
I would like to find something for IS-IS that is comparable to what Halabi's
book is for BGP, but that may be asking for too much. All I've found so
far is Radia's book, and that one chapter in Doyle's book. Is there
anything else?

RE: Has anybody seen IS-IS used anywhere but ISP's? [7:4784]

2001-05-17 Thread McCallum, Robert

Very similar to Robert Nelsons comments. I have just designed and
implemented an International out of band management network using IS-IS.
This as Robert has already said is to use firstly and primarily manage the
SDH equipment we have.

I find it quite straight forward although I seem to be having problems when
trying to summarize IP addresses which in turn then stop full CLNS
connectivity.

Maybe a posting later if I can't figure out what is going on!

Cheers

Damn, I forgot about that whole Decnet thing. That's right, that's right,
Decnet implements Is-Is for PhaseV migration. I have even worked on a
network like that, how foolish of me to forget.

So I guess I should have narrowed my question. What I should have said is,
has anybody seen Integrated IS-IS (for IP routing only) being used in a real
working network other than an ISP?

A subset is used for SONET managment in telcos. I have also seen it

OSI) in order to get dual OSI and IP routing.

Menus [7:3970]

2001-05-10 Thread McCallum, Robert

Hi,

Does anyone know how to configure a menu such that by pressing key 1 it will
do various commands i.e.

menu robert text 1 Press key 1 to shut ehternet interface down
menu robert command 1 conf t

then when you put in more menu robert command 1 they just overwrite each
other.

What I need to do is
menu robert command 1 config terminal
menu robert command 1 interface ethernet 0/0
menu robert command 1 shut
menu robert command 1 exit

BUT the only command which is showing is the last menu robert command 1
exit.

I have tried to do menu robert command 1 conf t int e0/0 shut exit

but of course it errors as expected saying that there is no more commands
after conf t i.e. when you normally type the command in.

Any help much appreciated.

RE: Guides on designing IS-IS routing [7:1340]

2001-04-20 Thread McCallum, Robert

Just a side thread but since your sdh switches can only talk ISIS shouldn't
someone within your company be able to tell you this.

Seriously though look up the links below. BUY Jeff Doyles Routing TCP/IP
book although there are some flaws in it, it is the best there is out there
at the moment. Also Advanced IP Network Design by Cisco Press has a good
section on ISIS specifically on design.

You should be looking nowadays into the ISIS MultiArea Support document URL
below :-

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/120newft/120
t/120t5/ismarea.htm#xtocid299080

watch the word wrap.

This entails the way forward that most companies should be following
nowadays. It is very useful and although it states in the document that you
can have up to 27 different level-1 areas hanging of 1 router I have still
to prove this. I have heard rumours that at around the 9 different areas
the router starts to creak but I think this must have something to do with
the router type and memory that the person tried the test on. Also remember
that to enable ISIS on a Cisco router you have to buy the Enterprise
software which in turn in most routers then requires a memory upgrade. If
you require any other info or are unclear on anything then just give us a
shout. Unfortunately I am designing and configuring a network which uses
Marconi's EMOS systems and Marconi's ADMuxes etc etc. Oh the Joys. ;-

in this case definitely. No adjacency formed because the ip address was
duplicate. Once I sorted this problem then the adjacency came in so in this

According to Doyle's book Pp 648:

"An interesting side effect of the fact that ISIS is a CLNS protocol is that

the IP addresses of neighboring routers have NO INFLUNECE ON THE FORMATION
OF ADJANCIES. another result is that two interfaces with IP
addresses from completely different subnets can become adjacnet."

ISIS uses CLNS to form adjancies. IP has nothing to do with it. It'll
form

adjancies, if I'm not mistaken, even when router A and B are on different
subnets.

Here is a scenario which caught me out BIG time in a real life situation
 using ISIS.

 To make it easier

Router A has a serial connection to Router B

Everything is up layer 1 2i.e CDP can indeed see Router B if you are on
Router A and vice versa. Router B can't see any routes from Router A or
 beyond.

NOW Routers A serial 0's ip address is 172.16.130.5, Routers B serial
0's
 ip address is 172.16.130.5.

 Spot the deliberate mistake.

Although you say AHA he has the same ip address on the serial
connections.
SO, quite rightly ISIS says, go away I will never make an adjacency with
 myself :-(

However, it took me quite a while to discover that these IP addresses
were
 indeed duplicated.

REASON or should I make it a question? I think question would be better.

Q: What do you think would happen if I was on Router A and telnetted to
 172.16.130.5, would I telnet to Router A or B. :-

A: This is why it took me a while to realise this. I started debugging
adjacencies, blaming a new controller card which was the first time I had
used this in ISIS, everything bar the easy problem. Mental Note for me
 here
is don't dive in head first, always fault find the layers and remember
this
fault because it is nasty :-

RE: Unusual Aspect of a duplicate IP Address [7:353]

2001-04-14 Thread McCallum, Robert

No, What I saw was while on Router A if I telnetted to the 172.16.130.5
address it took me to Router B, so I thought that everything IP wise was
fine. On Tom's comment ISIS does require that IP is correct despite it
using CLNS to form adjacencies. Try it and see, when attempting an
adjacency do a debug isis adj and you will see a line saying no usable IP
addresses to from an appropriate adjacency.

However I thought that this scenario above would be protocol independent BUT
Priscilla seems to have a different result with the same scenario.

I think I saw something similar today, though not with ISIS. But duplicate
IP addressing caused us to Telnet to ourselves (i.e. Telnet from Router A
to Router A.) Troubleshooting went downhill for a while until we figured
out that was what was happening.

Is that what you saw too?

Thanks for the cool scenario. I hope the customer stopped breathing down

ISIS / IRB and BVI interfaces

2001-03-20 Thread McCallum, Robert

Hello,

a little while ago robert devito posted a problem very similar to the one
that I am now experiencing. At the time I tried to help to fix his problem
but I am unsure if Robert got a solution from anyone. I said at the time
that he was mad to try it but unfortunately now I have to do it for "live"
work. For those of you who never read Roberts initial problem it is very
similar to the one below. please help if you can.

1 router. 1 interface is bridged with clns clients on it. the other
interface is routed with a isis server.

The solution should be as easy as enabling IRB and to route clns. Problem.

ISIS tries in vain to establish adjacencies with these clients. It
constantly sits in the INIT state.

People on the first post wrote back to say try to do bridge irb and maybe
the circuits aren't t correct etc etc. All of these whilst useful did not
work as they were already configured properly.

My hunch (and its a scary one), What type of interface is a BVI? We all
know that ISIS will only operate correctly over a point to point or a
broadcast network and I reckon this is why no adjacencies will ever form
over this interface. does this sound right?

ok, not the exact situation but similar.

We built a circuit that bridges ATM with a LAN extension service.

This required a BVI on the core router. The far end was just another
Ethernet router for all intents and purposes.

Now, I haven't yet touched ISIS or clns - but when we first tried to get
OSPF working across the link it would not form an adjacency. Show ip ospf
neigh revealed EXSTART/DR on the remote router.

On the core router a bridge-group is defined and the ATM sub-interfaced
placed into it.

This immediately set the mtu for the BVI to 4470 bytes - of course we didn't
know that at the time!

On the remote router we observed "debug ip ospf adj" and one of the errors
we saw was words to the effect: "Nbr x.x.x.x has larger interface MTU"

Checked everything, saw the BVI at 4470 and changed it with the command "mtu
1500".

Pop! OSPF formed its adjacency and everything works fine.

Perhaps this is something to look into for your situation.

has a server on it which talks ISIS. This ethernet interface is up and
running ISIS routing protocol. The router and server have established a
layer 1 adjacency.

The question is this... Will the clients see the server? How can this be
done?

P.s. The clients talk clns.

RE: classless behaviour

2001-03-18 Thread McCallum, Robert

ip subnet zero is required when you want to use subnet zero i.e. 192.168.0.1
with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 is the zero subnet and can only be used
when you have ip subnet zero command. ip classless is another for routing,
with this if a packet comes in for a destination which is not exactly known
then it is dropped without the command ip classless on. With it on the same
packet will go to the "nearest matching route".

Hi,

To configure classless behaviour, we use "ip subnet-zero" and "ip
classless".
I never understand them, even after reading Doyle's bible.

* When do we need them ?
* If we don't use them, what will happen ?
* Is there good example to show their effect ?

Thank you in advance.

OSPF and frame relay issues

2001-03-08 Thread McCallum, Robert

I am at the moment ploughing through a lab which for the life of me I can't
get it to work. I'm going mad!!!. Scenario is this

Router4---Router3Router5
!
!
!
!
Router6

There is of course a frame relay cloud making these connections.
Connections are as above i.e.

Router4 has a pvc to Router3, Router5 has a pvc to Router3 and Router6 has a
pvc to Router3.

Conditions are --- Router3 uses 1 sub interface. No more sub interfaces
allowed on any router. All routers share the 10.10.X.X domain. All routers
are in area 0. Only one pvc can be used on Routers 4,56 i.e. only to
router3. You cannot use the command IP OSPF NETWORK nor can you use
multiple frame relay map statements.

SO the first thing that sprung to my mind is make router3 the DR and form
manual neighbor relationships. WRONG. this doesn't work. Router3 can ping
everything, All other routers can only ping router3.

Every router has full routing tables of the full network. PING end to end
is a complete no no.

Any help?

OSPF and frame relay issues

2001-03-08 Thread McCallum, Robert

Let me thank Greg Bensimon and Nigel Taylor for their help in identifying
what the annoyance was. The issue involved is actually policy routing
(YUCK). I had to apply a route map with the appropriate networks hosts and
set the next hop to the hub router. These configurations were done on the
spoke routers of the frame relay cloud. I then applied the policy to the
router rather than to a specific interface i.e. ip local policy route-map
blah. I can now ping every interface (THANK YOU). This lab was allocated 4
hours... I took around 14 to do this. I could have done it in half an hour
if I were aloud to use IP OSPF NETWORK command or indeed frame relay maps.

Again thanks to everyone else who helped out and I can't remember your names
(sorry!).

P.S. Greg good luck on the 19th 20th.

Cheers

RE: IS-IS on Lab Exam

2001-03-06 Thread McCallum, Robert

I am afraid that's where you are slightly of topic. CLNS and ISIS do go
hand in hand. Whether you are only routing IP with ISIS or not CLNS routing
still occurs. Whilst in the lab you will not have to implement Clns IF ISIS
goes belly up you might have to debug CLNS packets to find out what is
happening. SO if I were you I would know CLNS as well.

I found that the ciscopress CID book was all I needed to use to study to
pass this one. Of course, you will want to download the exam objectives on
this test as well as any other cisco test where it is available.

Your frustration on this test though is understandable. From the questions
on products that have been EOL for a long time to the "hmmm, i know that
these two answers are both right, but which is the right CISCO answer"
problem that exists on almost every Cisco test.

Maybe soon Cisco will start to let the course developers and product
managers help develop tests that make sense. Maybe they do already but it
is hard to believe that anyone except a test writer with the official course
material currently just plucks things out and says, "wow that looks like it
would be a good question".

Maybe they will even start to use the "feedback" feature that is on all the
tests now. I just picture them sitting around on a Friday night tilting
back a few beers saying, "hey check this comment out, don't they know we
wrote this test so it must be right?"

Maybe pigs will fly someday...

In the below website it says not to have portfast on if you connect
switches, hubs, or routers. I understand that point but what if a user
connected a mini-hub (Ex. Linksys EtherFast 8-Port 10/100 Desktop Hub)
or unmanaged mini-switch (Ex. Farallon NetLINE 10/100 switch) so that he
could connect multiple computers. Would this cause any problems? Thank
you!

http://www-1.cisco.com/warp/public/473/12.html

Note: The portfast feature should never be used on switch ports that
connect to other switches, hubs, or routers. These connections may cause
physical loops
and it is very important that spanning tree go through the full
initialization procedure in these situations. A spanning tree loop can
bring your network down. If portfast
is turned on for a port that is part of a physical loop, it can cause a
window of time where packets could possibly be continuously forwarded (and
even multiply) in
such a way that the network cannot recover.

RE: Portfast

2001-03-01 Thread McCallum, Robert

No,

The problem occurs if he creates a loop i.e. you have a main switch a cable
from the main switch goes to user A. User A decides to connect a hub and a
few terminals - Outcome fine. User B then says hey user A can you access
those terminals and the main network. User A says yeah how do you want to
connect? User A says yes and inadvertently patches his own pc and the
original connection that was from him to the main switch outcome is now main
switch has 2 connections to the minihub. NOW spanning tree goes oh my and
recalculates - outcome 30 second outage for everyone on that vlan. Then the
users go home, switch off their kit and go to the pub.
Next day. The mini hub is switched back on - because portfast is enabled
the ports go whoosh straight into forwarding mode - result - spanning tree
goes oh my!! and recalculates.

Outcome -- You and every other support member run about like loonies
trying to find this fault which occurs only when the user decides to switch
on his equipment.

Let me see if I got this correct. If he only connects one mini-hub or
mini-switch it is OK to have portfast on on the main switch. If he then
connects another mini-hub or mini-switch onto the first mini-hub or
mini-switch than there will be a problem. But when you connect 2 mini-hubs
aren't you just extending the amount of ports and in a sense there is only

Subject: Portfast

RE: Dialer Watch

When using dialer watch you should still configure your isdn line as normal.
If you do not specify interesting traffic then the isdn line wont come up.

Hi all,

When using dialer watch is it normal, that the ISDN line will be up all the
time or can I configure it in a way, that it will only open calls when
interesting packets are seen.

RE: DHCP- Advise / Suggestions Apprciated

2001-02-23 Thread McCallum, Robert

Quick and easy way to find out if the packet is reaching each segment is
.

On each interface i.e. interface where user is, interface where DHCP server
is do...

ip accounting output-packets or just plain old ip accounting.

you should then do show ip account.

This should show you the ip address 255.255.255.255 being helpered to
whatever your address is. At this point take a note of the mac address of
the requester.

See if it is coming through to your server.

Now..If it is then the cisco devices are working properly, back to the
drawing board.

If it isn't getting to the server then come back. I have encountered a few
gotchas doing this before.

Hope this helps.

Everything I've found on Cisco tells me that multiple helper addresses are
supported and I would have to assume that it's forwarding the packet to both
helper address and is taking the response from the first machine to respond.
Any chance you can define part of the scope on each server? This would
ultimately solve the problem. Without a sniffer on both segments it's going
to be difficult to tell exactly what's happening unless someone has already
worked with this and has more input.

"Gayathri" wrote in message 975b6q$d4v$[EMAIL PROTECTED]...
Firstly, sorry for the repeated submission, I dont see my psoting under
the
main heading so I am forced to post it again..

here is my question...

I have 2 DHCP servers and I have defined both the IP helper addressess in
our routers

Now, if a client quieries for an IP, which of the servers will respond
first?

The problem I have is we have defined one subnet in DHCP Server and not in
the other.

When this user is querying for an IP , he is not getting a response.

interface Ethernet0
 ip address 10.X.X.X 255.255.0.0
 ip helper-address 10.X.1.X
 ip helper-address 10.X.1.Y

The said subnet is defined in the DHCP server 10.102.1.Y but, still there
is no response. when the client requests.

The main reason we have 2 DHCP servers is for redundancy.

Please note that they are independant of each other .

Does this mean that , when the client is requesting, the router first
forwards to the first DHCP server and since it is not getting a response ,
is dropping it?

Thanks

Gayathri

hi techs

I have 2610 router with 2 port sync/async card.

I want to use one of the async port to dial internet.

pls give me list of configurable commands.

I can give you a list of configurable commands but hey! I'll give you
hints instead after all you should learn how to do this. Try the Cisco CD
or indeed the Cisco web site. You usually can answer your question from
there.

your help in this regard is highly apprecaited.

help!!! What you want is for someone to give you the answer. Come on
mate, do a bit of digging yourself. Why should I dig for the info just to
hand it to you. At least when you send a mail show that you have at least
attempted to configure / do it yourself.

most urgent

Why is it most urgent. Have you maybe been tasked to do this in your
job?

All in all try it yourself. If you cant find it come but to the group with
what you have tried, then you might get a better answer.

SAR DELAY

2001-02-13 Thread McCallum, Robert

Anyone know the delay on a packet going through a SAR. I am experiencing a
delay of 80 ms on a 155 pipe end to end. No errors or anything which would
normally suggest delay. The only major delay item is the SAR, hence the
question. This ping packet is a normal packet size.

Thanks

RE: speed/duplex negotiation between pix 2610 router

2001-01-23 Thread McCallum, Robert

As a rule of thumb Frank, turn off all and everything that is auto sensing
or auto anything. The best way to do anything is to manually get it right.
There is a document on the cisco website, at the moment I do not have access
to it, which describes the reasons for the errors and auto sensing
nightmares.

You will fins when you manually set the cards then most if not all of your
errors will disappear.

Enjoy!

Subject: speed/duplex negotiation between pix 2610 router

Hi guys,
Has anyone experienced speed or duplex negotiation between a pix 506
ethernet interface and a cisco 2610's ethernet interface using a
cross-over cable between the two? Should I uplink those two into a switch
and let the switch worry about the negotiation? I'm currently
experiencing 'interface up, line down' on the pix's ethernet0(i think it's
intel NIC); this happens almost every 24 hours. Perhaps bad cross-over
cable? Any input will be appreciated.

router support 3 types of power supply, AC, DC RPS.
If this thing can be done, where you recommend for purchase the power
supply, i don't mind to get a used unit.
