Merge ISDN 2000AF Software? [7:71731]

2003-07-01 Thread Tim Medley
I have a used Merge ISDN 2000AF simulator I purchased for my lab and I am in
desperate need of the software for it. Merge Tech support says that I need
to re download the software to the simulator, because it is corrupt. Does
anyone have the software they can share with me?

Thanks,

RE: caller name ID/call manager [7:56218]

2002-10-25 Thread Tim Medley
Yep this is a known issue with CCM. Why cisco chose to do this is
anyones guess. All the telco's that we work with send Caller ID Name in
the ISDN Facility IE.

Per Cisco, this can be modified on a per trunk group basis on a DMS-100
switch. None of the Telcos' we use have a DMS-100 so we haven't been
able to verify this. Cisco says they will modify CCM to send/receive
caller id name in the ISDN Facilty IE, but they haven't committed to a
timeframe or version.

One of the telco's we use, came up with an alternate method to send a
name for Calling Party Name on a per DID Block basis, but in order to do
this our H323 Gateways need to use ISDN NI3, which the current Cisco IOS
revisions do not support yet. Cisco gave no indication as to if/when
they will support NI3.

We lose more IP Telephony deals because of stupid features that everyone
else's IP Telephony system or traditional key/pbx system has.

We have been working with Cisco on a problem for about a year now
and have determined that we can not get caller name id on our phone
because Bellsouth is sending it in the facility ID field. Cisco call
manager will only look at the display IE field. We have also
checked with two other carriers and they also deliver it in the
facility ID field.

My question is... does anyone get caller name ID on their phones
from external callers? And if so what carrier do you use and what
kind of switch is it being brought in on?

OT: FS IBM SX GBIC's work fine with Cisco 3500 series switches [7:54929]

2002-10-05 Thread Tim Medley

I have a bunch of IBM SX GBIC's for sale i anyone is interested for use in
your labs. I have tested these in several 3500 XL series switches as well as
in a 6500 and they work fine.

Selling them for $25 each plus shipping. Simple inexpensive way to use Gig E
in your home lab.

I do not believe that these are on the approved Cisco third party GBIC list,
so I wouldn't use them on a production network.

Fortuneatley, we don't have a policy yet that requires us to stay after we

I have been dating for 11 years now, yes .. with the same girl :)
Would seem like a marriage dont you think ?

BUt i guess it's the same everywhere, that you have to sign a paper that you
don't leave after getting a certificate. They mostly wanna kaap you a year
or more, depends on the contract. Leave within that period off time ? Bring
out the cash and start paying for the cost they had for putting you through
certification.

heheh...you now know the difference between dating and marriage! Where I
work, we have a trade agreement with a testing facility, so I get cisco
boots and tests for free. Not only do I not have to pay first then get
reimbursed. But even though I'm missing work, I still get my 40 hours
paycheck when I'm at the boot. Sounds like a win/win situation, right?
Wrong, my wife complains because I have to sign an agreement that says I
won't get the cert and then quit. She think they should shell out 10k for it
all and that I should just be able to leave the next day.

Thank-you very much for the recommendations for Top-Down Network Design. I
probably don't express my gratitude often enough to the many people who
bought the book.

I suspect that we may be helping a Cisco Networking Academy student with
homework. ;-) This sounds a lot like the exercises they do. That program has
a tendency to teach a bottom-up design methodology that focuses on physcial
size and technology/media selection, before gaining an understanding for:

business and political concerns
budget
user expectations for reliability, response time, etc.
application requirements for bandwidth, delay, etc.
appliation behavior in terms of broadcasts, traffic patterns, etc.

You all did a good job of pointing out the importantance of these concepts,
so I will say no more.

Priscilla

You need a standard cisco console cable and a cisco db25 adaptor (rj45 to

Standard cisco terminal settings apply.

thought I needed a straight through DB9-DB25 modem cable, but it doesn't

chasing other possibilities. Is this in fact the right cable? I have
searched the archives and looked at several CCO links without a clear answer

I'd really like is something ultra-simple, like db-25 pin2 to db-9 pin3
and so on. Can anyone point that out to me? TIA.

So is that how people without experience do it? Just keep failing the ccie
written exam until you've memorized all the questions or get lucky?

You must be single, or rich, or both. My wife has a fit when I spent $125 on
a exam I am well prepared for, let alone spend $300 on the written. And my
employer reimburses for the exam.

I guess now I know why my employer will only pay for an exam twice.

Try picking up a book and learning something, then you could pass the exam

If I understand this correctly, cisco routers support this RFC 3032 feature.
Then the next question is, Do any Cisco routers support VoMPLS, where lines
would bring analog or digital voice into voice ports and the router would
translate (transcode?) the stream into bits that are encapsulated as the
payload of MPLS frames in accord with MPLS Forum Implementation Agreement
dated
July 27, 2001? I'm not sure about the addressing and other details, but I'd
just like to know if cisco routers can do this wihtout the intervention of IP
packets. (And approximately what classifying, marking and queueing would the
routers use on the PPP links if other traffic such as IP or IPX non-voice
data
were also present. But that is asking too much at this point. Maybe later.)

Assuming you find the IOS that supports MPLS on the 2500

Alternatively, we have used the MPLS routers as access
devices to connect to a FR cloud (ATM too but we don't have

four inexpensive 2500/2600 routers with HDLC/PPP serial

RE: Voice suggestion needed [7:52936]

2002-09-09 Thread Tim Medley

1) CIPT is very product specific, relates almost entirely to Cisco Call
Manager
2) CVOICE is Cisco VoX; dial-peers, VoIP, VoATM, VoFR, some QoS, some minor
VoIP hardware product knowledge.
3) IPTT is all about troubleshooting CIsco IPT products (CCM, Unity, VoIP)
4) DQoS is all QoS, inside and out
5) CuSE and CuSA exams are similar to CIPT, but relate to Unity, also covers
MS Exchange, and AD

I would start with the exam that covers information you are most familiar
with. Most of the Cisco Voice relate exams assume hands on product
knowledge, without that hands on knowledge, the exams are 3 or 4 times harder.

Hardware issues w/ 4000-M [7:52764]

2002-09-05 Thread Tim Medley

Anyone run into this before?

I pulled a couple 4000's (I believe they are 4000-M's, definately not
regular 4000's, and they don't appear to be 4500 or 4700's), out of a
storage closet.

When I boot up the first one I get the following,

System Bootstrap, Version 4.6(1), SOFTWARE
Copyright (c) 1986-1992 by cisco Systems
bus error not generated on main memory parity error
location 0xfc, phase 0, subtest 0, test: write
  written 0x0, read 0x0 ... aborting
failed main memory parity test ... aborting

I've replaced the dram simm with a known good one and I still get the error.
I have swapped out the flash, the shared memory chip, and the roms with no
luck. I even tried without shared mem and flash.

When I boot the second one I get the following,

System Bootstrap, Version 4.6(1), SOFTWARE
Copyright (c) 1986-1992 by cisco Systems

Bad memory at location 0x0010: wrote 0x0010, read 0x0FF0

Same thing, I've swapped all the memory, roms, etc, with no change.

Are both of these boards toast? I've looked at all the jumper locations and
compared them to whats on CCO and everything looks kosher.

Anyone run into this beofre or have any other ideas? Or should I just use
these as paperweights.

One thing to note is that the 2600 series routers do not support NFAS.
We went round and round with TAC on this for a week or so; the end

support is planned for the 2600's but at an unknown date.

Subject: RE: redundant pri's ?? [7:46203]

Brian,

The easiest solution from understanding your problem is to order an
additional Pri from your service provider and have them configure the
trunks
using NFAS (Non-facilities associated signaling) This will allow you to
increase the B channel count by 24 and retain the same dial number for
inbound calls. NFAS allows multiple Pri circuits to use a single
D-channel
to control signalling for all of the Pri's in the group. You gain the
24th
B channel on the Pri since no D-channel is required. You will need an
additional Pri ports on your HQ router because they are goingto hand you
another physical circuit. The catch is that some service providers I've
run
into only allow a few Pri's in an NFAS configuration, even though a
single
D-channel has the capabiltity to signal for up to 28 T1's (or a DS-3).
As
for the single IP, it will stay on the serial0:23 (ex.) interface of
your
D-channel.

Hope this helps.

We use CatTools from Kiwi Systems. When it works, CW2k sometimes backs
up configs, but it's spotty. (this is mostly due to how it was set up by
the guy who admins our cw2k deployment).

On our voip gateways, the configs are backed up manually any time a
change is made, since config changes occur quite often.

corporate network (about 300 routers), and they don't backup the configs
at
all. They record the config when it's deployed and trust employees to
update the records if they make a change. This got me wondering what
others were doing.

Good Job. Sometimes you have to bend the truth to get around the
politics.

I've had a similar issue with TimeWarner Road Runner and my ubr924. They
won't support it in docsis mode and the basic bridging config doesn't
seem to work with their setup.

For now I am using a 2611 that I bought for my lab.

Hi, all.
This is just a short notice for people on this list that are subscribers
of
Cox Communications and have been denied the use of the Cisco uBR924 or
newer
models.
I have battled the company's politics in the past when i wanted to
connect my
uBR924 to their network. I even escalated my request to their Tech.
Engineering Dept. in San Diego, only to be told that they no longer
support
any Cisco cable modems in their database.
Alas, after a few months of being quarantined by the likes of Doyle,
Halabi
and the gang, i was able to spare a few hours to configure my uBR for
basic
bridging operation (config is on CCO) and call up their local tech
support
and
lied that I wanted to register a Toshiba modem. Gave the tech the MAC
and
Serial number (thank G~d she did not recognize these as Cisco
numbers!!), and
in two minutes my unit was provisioned.
I hope this message helps one or more list subscribers.

RE: CIPT and DQOS certs [7:38925]

2002-03-20 Thread Tim Medley

Just to be clear, neither of these two tests are a cert. There is a new
Cisco Qualified Specialist Cert, for IP Telephony Support. It requires
CIPT, CVoice, and DQoS. It also requires a CCNP. In essence it is a
replacement fot the CCNP Voice specialization.

CIPT and CVoice were recently revised (again). I took the last version
of the tests and am preparing to take the latest version since that is
what is required for the IP Telephony Support cert.

Cisco Press has released both the CIPT and the CVoice class notes in
book format, Cisco IP Telephony, ISBN 1587050501 and Cisco Voice over
Frame Relay, ATM, IP, ISBN 1578702275.

I am using both of these book and hands on experience to go take the new
versions of the exams.

The DQoS test is a beast. One of the CCIE's I know who works quite a lot
with Voice and QoS failed the first time. It's pretty intensive and
covers a lot. I'm scheduled to take the DQoS class next month, then I'll
take the test.

RE: wireless cert [7:37574]

I passed all three of Cisco's wireless exams, AM, SE, and FE. All the
prep material you need is in the VOD files on PEC.

I recently took the cwna exam from Planet3 Wireless (www.cwne.com). It's
a vendor neutral wireless certification. I used the book, Wireless LANs,
Implementing High Performance IEEE 802.11 Networks, by Jim Geier to
prepare for the exam as well as some of the Cisco VOD presentations.

It's an interesting, well rounded exam, focusing on 802.11 network
fundamentals; basic design, implementation, and troubleshooting as well
as RF fundamentals were covered.

RE: Voice over IP [7:37298]

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

2600's and 3600's are great for VoIP. You need an IP Plus feature set
and then appropriate voice modules based on your needs. An NM-1v or
NM-2v and some VIC's would get you started.

If you tell us what exactly you are trying to do with VoIP we can
recommend a more specific hardware choice.

RE: Grade to get CCDA [7:36636]

2002-02-28 Thread Tim Medley

I have never been on a job interview where anyone asked to see my cisco
certification certificate or asked my score on an exam. I have been
asked my testing ID to verify that I did indeed have the cert I claimed
(crazy interview, guy had just interviewed a guy who said he was a CCIE,
turns out he wasn't).

On interviews I've been asked what certification I currently hold, them
based on my certs I've been asked related questions to see what I really
know or don't know.

When we interview someone for a job at work, we ask the person what
their technical strengths are and ask detailed technical questions; if a
person says they know something, we're going to dig until we determine
if the person really knows what their talking about or if they're full
of @!#$.

Our approach is similar but not as brutal as the way Cisco interviews;
When I was on a telephone interview with Cisco and the interviewer says,
so it says on your resume, you know something about Ethernet... tell me
everything you know about Ethernet. When I was done he started drilling
into me about Ethernet; I thought the CIA was questioning me. The guy
repeated this with every keyword and buzzword I had on my resume. Then
he drilled me for details on specific projects and accomplishments that
I had listed on my resume; asking about how i've designed a network,
equipment I've used and why.

You sound just like my dad Tim. No offence meant - Some great things
have
come from him :-)
I agree with the sentiment, but sometimes it's nice to know (for no real
reason).
I'll change your statement to:

If you know the material that is covered on the exam then you will Pass.
If on average, you know 65% of the material then you will probably also
pass, as you have to get 755/1000 and you start with 300 (or do you).
If you know less than 65% of the material, you've still got a chance
because
a majority are 'multiple-guess'
So around 50% of the knowledge may do it.

So, if you've half a mind to get studying that might be enough!

If I was interviewing I'd like to see grades up in the late 80's or 90's
on
the certificates.

Short answer - 755

Simulating an ISDN Switch using an NM-HDV w/ an MFT [7:36527]

There was some discussion awhile back (last summer?) about using an
NM-HDV with an MFT module do simulate an ISDN switch for lab use.

Did anyone ever figure out if this was possible? We have an extra NM-HDV

simulator without any extra cost.

Someone had mentioned there was a possible new feature in 12.2 to permit
this?

Anyone care to comment or revisit this?

RE: VOIP Certification [7:35879]

2002-02-20 Thread Tim Medley

Kelly,

The CCNP Voice specialization was retired late last year. It was
replaced by the IP Telephony Support Specialist certification.

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/cqs/iptel/

Anyway, I have taken the CIPT and CVoice exams. I mostly used the last 3
years of Cisco IPT experience, but I did use the Cisco Press, Voice over
IP Fundamentals for the CVoice exam.

There are a couple of other Cisco Press books that were not available
when I took the exams, but I would highly recommend them. Cisco
CallManager Fundamentals, Cisco IP Telephony (CIPT course book), Cisco
Voice over Frame Relay, ATM, and IP (CVoice course book) and Integrating
Voice and Data networks. All are Cisco Press books. Another good
resource is CCO.

Both tests were fair, the exam outline says it all. Lots of product
knowledge, product selection, CallManager Administration and features,
aand little QoS, were on the CIPT exam. The CVoice exam covered lots of
product knowledge, gateway selection, dial plans, call routing, gateway
configuration, some QoS, Cat 6509 configuration for voice and QoS, and
some basic atm and frame-relay knowledge.

I have not taken the DQoS exam yet. I am planning on taking the exam in
the next couple of weeks. I am using the Cisco Press IP QoS book as well
as some of the above CIPT and CVoice books to prepare.

Hope this helps.

I chose C but Boson says B. Obviously I have read a 1000 times that the
DR

mis-interpreting the way the question is worded (typical Cisco)..

you need to designate the vlan 2 interface as the management interface.
To do this, use the interface command, Management. Heres an example.

RE: a little OT: appletalk [7:16430]

2001-08-20 Thread Tim Medley

Jim,

Depending on the version of Mac OS that the Mac's are running, you may
not need to do anything with AppleTalk. Win2k Services for Mac, allows
straight TCP/IP file serving to Mac clients without appletalk. The Mac's
need to be running Mac OS 8.6 or later. If this is the case, then you
are looking at TCP/IP traffic from office1 to office2.

hope this helps.

Also here's a great resource for Mac and Windows integration,

Is there a way to have office1 Mac users access

I was told Appletalk must be enabled for Mac users to

Thanks in advance.

RE: CCDP Requirement [7:16317]

2001-08-17 Thread Tim Medley

Part of being able to pass any Cisco certification is the ability to
read and perform research.

Cisco has provided a great resource that can answer most any question
about Cisco Certification. And, get this, this resource is free!

www.cisco.com

Maye you should stop and take a look on CCO and read the reqirements for
the CCDP certification.

But here is an except from the available information:

CCDP Prerequisites
Valid CCNA and CCDA certifications

CCDP Exams
640-503 Routing or 640-900 BSCI

640-504 Switching

640-505 Remote Access

640-025 Design

So to answer your question, if you were a CCNP, you need to take and
pass the CCDA exam and the 640-025 Design (CID) exam to become a CCDP.

BSCI Beta [7:14219]

2001-07-30 Thread Tim Medley

I took the BSCI beta test today, it wasn't as bad as I imagined it. 146
questions, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, and the dreaded IS-IS, as well as EIGRP and
RIP redistribution into OSPF. There were approximately 15 questions on
IS-IS; I know I had at least 15 questions wrong.

Wasn't too bad for a beta test, very few spelling/grammar errors, and
really only one question that didn't make sense, I think there was a
sentence missing. You had 3 hours to take the test, I only used about
half of that.

I'm pretty sure I passed, I'll know for sure in a couple of months. I
found the questions on EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP to be better thought out and
more diverse than the BSCN exam, albeit there were twice the questions.

Now on to the Multi-cast/QoS beta test next week (yuck).

Hai,

I am facing a strange problem. I am using a cisco 2610 router in my
network. In that I am having one fastethernet, and 2 WIC2T . When I am
connecting to the L3 switch, it is able to ping to that particular VLAN,
and unable to ping to other VLANS or outside of that VLAN. If I use
another router with ethernet card (becuase I am not having another
ethernet card in first router), with the same setup it is able to
communicate with the outside world. So I concluded that it is not the
problem with L3 switch. I tried to find it on cisco site, but unable to
locate the solution.

Thanks in advance,
Kiran

That's a scary thought: CCIEs who develop protocols. ;-]

I know very few respected protocol or platform designers that ever
mentioned having a CCIE. On the other hand, it only occasionally
comes up that one has a PhD, which isn't always in a relevant
discipline. I'm amused by the degree requirement--I could see an
argument for a master's or doctorate, but the undergraduate computer
science program gets into relatively little you need to know to
design and implement protocols, other than as a coder.

Personally, I'm a much better developer than I am a support person.
There's overlap between the skills of product/protocol design and
large network design, but much less with troubleshooting.

Even quality testing is a somewhat different skill set than
troubleshooting. For example, has anyone seen a Cisco exam that
explored the differences among conformance, interoperability, and
performance testing? The difference between a correct but boundary
condition event, a syntactically incorrect event, and an inopportune
event?

They are looking for software engineers. They aren't going to find many
that have a CCIE? It's a different skill set and requires a different
type
of personality.

AGS+ crossed over to 2610, Serial cable length issue? [7:10810]

2001-07-03 Thread Tim Medley

I've finally decided to sit down and try to troubleshoot what I thought
was a faulty serial port on my AGS+.

I have a 2610 with a WIC-2T connected to my AGS+ via a CAB-SS-V35MT and
a CAB-VCF. The CAB-VCF is from pacific cables and is a 26pin DCE to a
V.35 winchester cable. The CAB-VCF is 6 feet long and the CAB-SS-V35MT
is 10 feet long; so I have a 16 foot crosover cable.

When I cable the two routers together and just configure a simple point
to point connection, with the following config:

AGS+
int s2
ip address 100.100.100.1 255.255.255.252
encap ppp
no shut

2610
int s0/0
ip address 100.100.100.2 255.255.255.252
encap ppp
no shut

The serial interfacces come up/up but then after a second or two line
protocol goes down on both sides and they become up/down.

I thought the AGS+'s serial interface was bad (I had a bad applique a
while back). So I moved to a different interface on the AGS+, same
situation.

I then decided to try a different router, I replaced the AGS+ with a
CGS, and I got the same results.

I now think the issue is with the cable. a) I could have a bad cable. b)
the cable I have could be two long. I have replaced the CAB-SS-V35MT,
with no luck. What kind of issues would I see if the cable was too long?
Would I see the issue I am experiencing? I'm getting ready to call
Pacific Cable and order another CAB-VCF.

the ags+ or CGS is doing clocking, I forgot to list the command in my

I just tryed something else. I plugged a standard 2500 V35 DTE cable to
the CAB-VCF and connected the ags+ to a 2501. The interfaces came up/up
and stayed that way.

I may have 2 bad CAB-SS-V35MT's, or a bad port on the WIC-2T.

I think it would help if I gave you the scenario I was envisioning. I
would
like to plan a network where we have 2 seperate routers connecting to
our
ISP or perhaps 2 seperate ISP's. Lets assume 1 ISP, 2 routers ,each with
its
own full T1 line for simplicity. If 1 router died, I'd like to keep the
internet connection alive without changing any of the clients default
gateways. I figured HSRP would be good to apply here becuase it acts as
1
virtual router. But, would that mean that 1 router would be idle at all
times not allowing me to ever get more than 1.5MB bandwidth? Or this
extra
idle T1 line just the cost of redundancy in this case?

Marc wrote in message

HSRP is for router redundancy, not WAN circuit redundancy. If you
wanted
to
have internet or WAN circuit redundacy, you would of course use two
lines,
have equal-cost routes (two default routes...etc) and that's all
that's
involved. HSRP not needed for WAN load-balancing/redundancy...

I was doing a little research on HSRP and had a question for anyone
who
 has
configured it. I read the whole RFC 2281 and could not find my
answer
 there.
If you have two routers running HSRP with T1 lines to the internet,
1 is
 the
standby and one is the active. Does all traffic only go through the
active
at all times unless it dies? If so isn't it a waste not ever
utilizing
the
T1 line thats on standby (of course until the active fails)?

If bandwidth exceeded 1.5MB would the second router kick in to share
the
load or would it totally take over?

With these 2 routers acting as a single virtual router would
throughput
ever be able to exceed 1.54 MB assuming each has its own T1
connection?

  thanks

2001-06-22 Thread Tim Medley

It's been a busy week, but I finally broke down and took my routing exam
last week passed with a 800 (I really need to work on my BGP Skills (or
lack there of).

Thanks to everyone who contributes on the list for their support and
expert guidance.

A colleague asked me today which was the hardest exam. It was actually a
difficult question to answer. I took the ccnp exams in this order:
Remote Access, Switching, Support, Routing. Each test was equally as
difficult based on my networking experience and what I work with on a
day to day basis. At work I deal with alot of switching, simple
point-to-point leased lines, ISDN and basic OSPF, and alot of
troubleshooting. There were areas of each test that were difficult for
me since I don't deal with those technologies on a day to day basis.

I used a variety of books to prepare for the different exams, some of
the sybex ccnp books, cisco press books, and hands on work on the job
and in my home lab.

thanks,

RE: IP Phones [7:8898]

2001-06-17 Thread Tim Medley

You could use a 12sp+ or a VIP30. These are a couple of the origional
Cisco IP Phones that Cisco aquired from Selsius.

You would still need a Call Manager to actually use the Ip Phones. They
cannot just talk to each other.

You're best bet for the CIPT and CVoice tests are to take the actual
cisco courses.

In my experience both the CVoice and CIPT exams really actual hands on
experience.
You could get away with studying the Course notes and CCO. Cisco Press
just released a hardbound edition of the CVoice class material and there
is a similar book being released in August for the CIPT.
http://www.ciscopress.com

If your interested I may still have a couple of Cisco 12sp+ IP Phones
collecting dust that i'd sell off.

RE: telephony problem w/7750 and 7910s [7:7788]

2001-06-10 Thread Tim Medley

There are two types of conferences with Call Manager 3.x, both need to
be configured in the Call Managerm under Services --- Conference Bridge

1) Ad Hoc conference - where you have an existing call and you want to
conference another person or persons into the call.

A) While you have an active call press the CONF soft key, this
will place the firstcall on hold and give you a dial tone to dial
the person you want to conference in. Once the person is on the line,
press the CONF soft key to join both calls together.Repat process to
add more indiviuals.

1) Meet-Me Conference - where people call into a conference bridge that
has been set up before hand.

B) In order to use a meet me conference someone must establish
the meet me conference. To establish the Meet Me conference,
pickup the handset on your IP Phone and press the MeetMe soft key,
now dial in the number configured for MeetMe conferenceing. No people
can call into the conference bridge number and be connected to the
conference. You will here a short beep on the line when someone
joins into the conference.

Full Duplex Streaming Endpoint Count 48
Orphan Stream Time Out(sec) 300

Any ideas?

If you are a cisco reseller or buy a large $$$ amount of cisco
equipment, try talking with your local Cisco AM or SE. Many of the local
Cisco offices have certification racks for use by cisco employees and
resellers.

It;s worth a try. My local Cisco office has 2 racks. I decided not to
add ATM gear to my home lab, and just book some time on the Cisco racks
to practice my ATM skills (or lack there of).

 I still want my CCIE.

Can I pass the Token Ring (DLSw RSRB), ATM and Voice portions of the

I passed the CCNA, CCDA and CCNP with book knowledge.

Is anyone else in a similar situation?

All,

Here's a quick follow-up to set us straight and to provide a link to the
information.

The Cisco 1751 is a new member of the Cisco 17XX series modular routers.

The 1751 now supports 802.1Q VLAN support. But does not seesm to support
ISL VLAN's according to the data sheet.

Below is the link to the data sheet.

As a follow up, and minor correction - ISL is supported on the 17xx
platform, but if you want inter-vlan routing using 802.1Q, then at this
point in time one must still move up to the 26xx platform.

I suppose I should feel Cisco's pain, having to support as many feature
sets, versions and hardware devices as it does. Still

Once again, I offer the following. Need a CCO login to use it, but it is
very helpful in discussions like this.

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/FeatureNav/FN.pl

According to the IOS feature navigator, ISL VLAN routing is now
available on
the 17xx platform with IOS 12.2.1 releases.
I came up with 22 feature sets for the 17xx series.

It's a moving target. :-

Tim- I know you know this stuff, but what has changed ??? The CCO says
these routers will not do ISL or 1Q, up to IOS version 12.0T.

From my CCO search yesterday:

CSCdm72054
IEEE 802.1Q (VLAN) and ISL are not supported on the Cisco 1720 or Cisco
1750
due to a hardware limitation in the 860T processor.

Cisco 1750 Single Subnet Configuration
The Cisco 1750 series router does not support either ISL or 802.1Q
Ethernet
trunking. Below is an example of a single subnet 1750 configuration.

I did hear a rumor that the CSC-2E's now supports ISL :o)

RE: Cisco moving to a one day lab? [7:6735]

2001-06-04 Thread Tim Medley

Man Chuck, I didn't know you were that old?

Chuck's response actually brought up something interesting. How many
current CCIE's could just walk in and pass the lab again? I know several
CCIE's that could walk in off the street and pass the CCIE lab without a
problem, but I also know a couple of CCIE's that would take another 3 or
4 attempt and months of study to pass again.

What if cisco upped the ante and made a mandatory recert every 3 years
by re-taking the lab exam? That would keep the CCIE certification
respectable wouldn't it?

just my $0.02

with regards to the contents of the exam, I am reminded of the time I
told
my son that when I was his age I could name all the presidents of the
IUnited States, to which he answered there were only 5 or six of them
back
then :-

with regards to the value of the CCIE, whatever that may be, like it or
not,
there are tens of thousands of us wannabes in the queue. Assuming normal
progress, that tells me that in 5 more years, there will be tens of
thousands of CCIE's. Ain't nothing anyone can do about that.

Louie, let me ask - if you were to walk into the lab tomorrow, do you
think
you could pass? if not, of what value is your CCIE? I have a sneaking
suspoicion that most CCIE's, unless they passed the lab very recently,
would
not get through it again without some devoted study. kinda like passing
the
bar, or the CPA exam?

Chuck
tride hard to keep out of this one, but.

I agree there is no way to talk apples to apples - too many things
have
changed - but don't forget you no longer have to deal with LAT, X.25,
CLNS,
DEC, Banyan Vines, Appollo, Appletalk or ATM Lane. (Voice was already
on
the lab prior to these items being removed.)

My concern is with the material that is not focused on teaching you
networking (I have no problem with that), but on the material the
simply
teaches you how to pass the test (kind of like all of the Microsoft
braindump material available - desinged only to help you pass the
test).
I
see too much material as of late that is way too focused on passing
the
lab,
 not on learning networking.

Louie- I don't think we're talk'n Apple to Apples here...

During the early CCIE exams, I was told candidates were able to use
their
own notes during the test (if Pamela Forsythe is out there, she could
confirm this rumor) can you imagine how much easier the lab would
have
 been with versions 9.0, 10.0 or even 11.0(22) IOS. I agree there's
more
information available, but after having sat through a 2 week CCIE lab
prep
class... I think the information just gets you in the ballpark.
Things
like bad time management poor interpretations, are big obstacles no
book
can fix. I believe the exam is as hard (if not harder) than it's ever
been.

When the CCIE cert first came about there were not 100+ books
avilable
to
help you pass it. There were not a multitude of online labs, lab
study
guides, study groups, ... Since all of those items are now
available, I
feel the bar has been lowered. I'm for putting it back where it
was.

Additionally I'm studying for my second CCIE cert, I sincerely hope
that
 it

I agree with you. It's awful easy for someone who's already gotten
their

to

say Sure.. make it as difficult as possible

I don't know many CCIEs personally. Only a couple, and both of them

resonable solution. Isn't this why Cisco is contemplating making
it 1

Looking for memory specs for 4000-M [7:6898]

2001-06-02 Thread Tim Medley

OK I'm getting a little frustrated this morning. I have been searching
the archives and CCO with no luck. I just got a 4000-M without any
memory and I'm trying to come up with memory for it.

Can anyone tell me or point me towards the memory specifications for a
4000-M? All I can seem to find on CCO is how much memory I can cram into
this guy; not what memory is compatible.

Also if anyone has some DRAM for a 4000-M they want to sell, I'd be
interested.

thanks,

A distinct T-shirt would be one way to identify one another.
Let's reopen the Groupstudy T-shirt thread. Someone suggested that we
create
a T-shirt design and then make it available to members. There was some
activity - but no conclusion.
Let me submit a word picture of a suggested design:
Room in home. Through window moon can be seen - it's late at night.
Calendar
on wall has two dates circled in red - labeled LAB. Frantic but
exhausted
candidate is typing on keyboard. Rack of routers behind. AGS+ on floor
with snoozing cat atop. Scattered books with first names of known

impatient.
There should be versions for male and female GroupStudy members.
Any thoughts? Yes, the cat's name is Clifford.

Can an NP-2T serial module do DCE? [7:5594]

I have a 4000 router with a NP-2T 2port serial module (the big V2 50 pin
connectors) I was thinking that this module cannot do DCE, only DTE.
Today I noticed a DCE light on the back of the serial module.

Can this module do DCE?

RE: CIPT Study Material [7:5404]

2001-05-22 Thread Tim Medley

The CIPT exam is based around the actual CIPT Course. The course is
pretty good if you want to work with the Cisco IP Telephony products. It
gives you a good background in the technologies and products. The exam
is very product oriented, you need to know the CIPT products pretty
well, as well as how to configure and administer them. CCO will give you
some information, but much of the required knowledge is gained from
actually using the products.

RE: AGS+ DCE mode? [7:4655]

2001-05-16 Thread Tim Medley

Do you have the DCE end of your serial cable pluged into the AGS's
serial port.

FYI on the mci cards the serial port mode jumpers are in front of the
serial cable connector. For DCE mode you want jumper W51 and W41
jumpered. Refer to this url for configuring an mci card.

Hello, I am having a problem getting my serial ports to act in DCE mode.

I have changed the jumpers to the appropriate places, but still have no
luck. When I issue the show controller mci command it tells me that
the interfaces are in DTE mode, except for one, which is recognized as
unknown. I have 4 serial ports. Two are hooked up to one card, and two
to another card. I have changed the jumpers correctly for serial ports
2
and 3( I used the diagram from cisco's website, labeled CSC-SCI, which
looked exactly like the card for serial ports 2 and 3). Here is the link
to the diagram,
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/core/cisagspl/agscfig/43
412.htm#xtocid1591 I
was unable to change the jumpers for serial 0 and 1 because I couldnt
find the jumpers for that card...it kinda looked like CSC-MCI but the
jumpers were not in the same place. I have tried to issue the
clockrate
command on all serial interfaces but it says I cannot because it is in
DTE mode. I am stuck at this point. Does it have to do with the
microcode on each controller? Do I need to upgrade this? Any help
would
be appreciated immensely Paul

Hi Group,

I just got a 2502, it runs 10.3(16), I configured it and use copy run
start to save it, but next time when I boot the box, I still got the
initial configuration dialog:

 --- System Configuration Dialog ---

At any point you may enter a question mark '?' for help.
Use ctrl-c to abort configuration dialog at any prompt.
Default settings are in square brackets '[]'.
Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes]: no

I pressed no, then I found everything I configured before reload is not
there. show start still shows correct config but it's not used, for
show
run gives me blank config.

I know the image is quite old, but without solving this problem I
couldn't
upgrade it.

Anyone know what's wrong here?

Thanks,
Jerry

Just dropping a line to thank the group for the support and advice that

A pity it has been relegated to the lapsed category. Just a comment, I

I'm getting ready (or in Texas, I'd be a-fixin to git ready) to build
a
CCIE
lab prep setup, both for personal use and for the use of my local
studygroup.
Here's what I've identified - if I'm missing anything, please let me
know.

Here's the strategy I'm going to take for the equipment:

1-2511 --- console server (w/ octal cable)
1-2503 --- ISDN
1-2504 --- ISDN
1-2514 - dual eth
1-2515 - dual t/r
1-4000 w/NP-4T and NP-1E or NP-2E, and a BRI interface or two if they
exist
(F/R switch)
1-2924-XL
teltone isdn simulator
3 token ring MAUs
3 token ring media filters
4 AUI-10BT transceivers
4 Ethernet hubs
6 60-pin DTE-DCE cables
a bunch of Cat5 cables
rack
rackmount kits (or shelves)
and a partridge in a pear tree ;-)

I'm budgeting about $4000 and if an additional 2501 falls into my
possession
by accident,
so be it ;-)

That should provide most of what's needed and enough of the interface
types
required to
practice configurations (especially desktop protocols and iBGP/eBGP).
I'd
love a Cat5k too, but I can't do it on this budget.

What do you think about this parts list? Pretty good for a start?
Think
it's
achievable with $4000?

Please don't be offended. I have all used, second-hand gear in my home
lab. I paid $400 for one 2502 and $450 for another one.

I have eight routers in my home lab, several 3102's running 12.0 IOS
that I picked up for $50 each. I don't dispute that if you shop around
and look for the best bargains that you can get some pretty good deals.
I was just commenting that based on your proposed lab equipment list,
you would be hard pressed to buy all of that for only $4000.

good luck

Anyway this is the hardware we've got so far, I know we'll need a

but would like some expertise input from you folks that have done this

And of course i'd like to try to get by with the least hardware as

RE: 2610 w/ an additional 1e 2w module [7:3402]

2001-05-07 Thread Tim Medley

the NM-1e2w is not supported on the 2600's. Some people seem to get ot
to work under different ios's with varying results. Cisco doesn't
support it, if you manage to get it to work i'd suggest not using it in
a production environment.

For more info, search the archives, this topic is discussed quite often.

Subject: 2610 w/ an additional 1e 2w module [7:3402]

Hi all !!

I have just finished installinga new 1 e 2 w module in my 2610 router
It's not being recognized, unit allready had an existing Wic 2t plus the
built in ethernet
port. I added the 2t 1e which is actually 2 wic 1 t cards with an
ethernet port on the main module
and it's not being recognized, When i remove the existin wic 2 t cards
only the main ethernet shows up on the show
version..I do see the Act led on the module solid green but nothing on
the sho ver..

Am i mssing something ... do I have to activate this new module somehow
??

Clueless @ this point...

TIA for any info you might provide.

Randy
