IPSec/GRE VPN w/ ISDN Backup and EIGRP [7:72424]

2003-07-16 Thread Robert Rattiner
I have set up an IPSec/GRE VPN with EIGRP and am having problems getting the
ISDN backup to work correctly. Has anyone been able to do this
successfully. Thanks, Rob

HI Julian,

I think a floating static route will serve your purpose fine.

Hi all

I just have a query about configuring an isdn backup link to an isp.
I am going to use the backup interface bri0 with the backup delay command
on the serial link.

My question is what routing would i have to add if there is already a
default route going out the serial interface.

Thanks in advance guys

RE: isdn backup query [7:70443]

2003-06-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Considering that your default route is probably pointing to a next-hop of
the other side of the serial or perhaps is pointing to the serial interface
itself, you would still need to tell the router to send traffic out of the
BRI0 in the event that your serial goes down. If you serial interface goes
down, it will take your current default route out of the routing table as
well. So what you need to do is create a floating default static route
which is nothing more than a default route with a higher preference so that
it will only become active when the default route pointing to the serial is
removed.

Hope this helps.

It sounds like DSL has a low mean time between failure (MTBF) but a high
mean time to repair (MTTR), which can be just as bad, especially if it's
your only backup. Of course, your mileage may vary (YMMV), depending on
the
service provider. Also, a service level agreement (SLA) would help, as
Chuck

RE: is there anyone migrating isdn backup to dsl backup [7:58622]

2002-12-05 Thread John Neiberger
In our case our DSL lines all terminate on an ATM T1 on one of our
routers. I've configured OAM to test the lines and to declare the line
down when OAM cells are not returned. With this I immediately know when
a DSL line is down and can take action to correct it.

This brings up another key point. Sure, we're using DSL, but it's not
going to the public internet. We have a private line service in which
the provider multiplexes our DSL circuits onto the aforementioned ATM
circuit. This alleviates the concerns some people have about running
private data over public networks.

John

 Erick B. 12/4/02 9:33:35 PM
I would second Chuck on this. I have seen some folk
with DSL backup when the backup didn't work. Always
was something with the provider. If you go this route,
make sure to test/use the DSL connection on a weekly
or bi-weekly basis. Same could be said for ISDN
though. I guess it all depends on how good your
provider is :)

My home DSL connection has been a roller coaster ride
as well.

2002-12-04 Thread John Neiberger
A benefit to DSL as backup is that you should immediately known when it
goes down. This allows you to have the telco begin repairs while your
primary circuit is functioning. With ISDN, if you don't use it very
often there may be a problem with the line and/or equipment and you'd
have no idea until the primary failed. As far as I'm concerned, I'd
rather not wait until my primary fails before I discover that my backup
also is not functioning. This has happened a couple of times in the
last year with ISDN and it's a little frustrating.

So far, I haven't had an instance where a primary frame relay circuit
was down at the same time as a DSL backup circuit except for when
Backhoe Bob has attacked one of our locations and dug up the lines. In
that case, ISDN would have failed as well so it's no big deal.

I say DSL has no multi-service (or very limited) capabilities. There
isn't much in terms of QoS, LFI or other voice/video tools. Plus there is
no QoS across the DSL network (if over Internet) and no standard nation-wide
(no National provider).

If you say, there is no voice going across network, or video, then you are
doing your client a dis-service by providing no upgrade path towards that
eventual path.

RE: is there anyone migrating isdn backup to dsl backup [7:58598]

2002-12-04 Thread Erick B.
I would second Chuck on this. I have seen some folk
with DSL backup when the backup didn't work. Always
was something with the provider. If you go this route,
make sure to test/use the DSL connection on a weekly
or bi-weekly basis. Same could be said for ISDN
though. I guess it all depends on how good your
provider is :)

My home DSL connection has been a roller coaster ride
as well.

consideration: if a DSL link goes
down for whatever reason, it may take more than a
 couple of days for your

 to have some solid

The problem tends to be during those rare instances

Hmm...I just noticed something about what Paul is asking. He said he
has a _frame relay switch_ that he wants to use ISDN as a backup. Paul,
are you asking how to tunnel frame relay over ISDN? I believe this can
be done but I don't recall the configuration. I remember at one time I
had a configuration that allowed a frame PVC to be tunneled over an
async port to allow one more port on my frame switch, but unfortunately
I don't recall the details.

I believe there is also a Cisco IOS feature that has something to do
with frame relay over ISDN but I've never researched it.

Is this what you're trying to accomplish?

Thanks for all your input guy's

I think I confused the issue somewhat !! What I meant was that 'the 7200 is
terminating frame relay circuits and not
acting as a switch' !! (Thanks MADMAN), and that if the Frame fails the ISDN
would immediately kick in to provide connectivity

Anways ... I've got enough info from you all to start reading up ...

ISDN Backup [7:50261]

2002-07-31 Thread Shane Stockman

I currently have 2 point to point links ruuning to the same place using
eigrp as the routing protocol.I have added a isdn bri as backup but I don't
want the isdn to kick in until both the point to point links drop.

There is a serious routing issue with have 1 link up and the bri as the will
load balance across and cause a loss of packets.

If there are any config examples or documents or if anyonehas done this sort
of config please send some info.

Thanks

Sounds like a case for floating static routes.

Lets say that if both ptp links drop, you want site A to call site B.
Presumably site A can usually see routes to various site B addresses via
EIGRP (maybe even nicely summarised).

On site A, set up a static route to a site B address (or to a summary -
whatever matches your EIGRP routes), with an administrative distance of say
200, pointing to the dialer interface for the BRI (if you're using a dialer
- or straight to the BRI).

Then, if one ptp link drops, site A will still use the EIGRP route across
the other ptp link. If both ptp links drop, the static route will kick in
and send traffic via the ISDN.

If I'm understanding correctly, I think that you're looking for something
like that:

but it's a very new feature and I haven't tried it yet...
With that command, you can rotate through several dialer strings, but I
think that there's no possibility of configuring a delay between the calls..
hope this help.

Delay on ISDN Backup with Dialer Profiles !?!? [7:49441]

2002-07-23 Thread Antonio Montana

Hi all,

How can I configure a delay with dialer Profiles ??
Let's say I have a the following scenario with three routers (FR with OSPF).
In case of the failure of the connection between router_3 and router_1 ,
either router_2 or router_3 can bring up an ISDN line.
First it should come up the line between R1 and R3,
but if after let's say 90sec the ISDN isn't up, router_2 should connect to
router_3 via ISDN.
So, how can I configure delay under int DialerXX ??
In every case router_3 should be the Called Router, and the others the
calling routers ...

Looks like the link in my original post got stripped out. Oops!
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/793/access_dial/10.html

You can restrict the interesting traffic to specific time(s) of the day with
the
time-range command. The above link explains it pretty clearly. In case the
url gets
stripped out again, go to CCO and do a search on time based acl. It's the
first page
that comes up in the results.

Your making it too hard, you don't need the dialer map but you do need a

Re: ISDN backup will not activate [7:25129]

2001-11-02 Thread news

Hello,

Try using the backup interface command under the serial interface.

If the serial 0 is the primary then use the following config

 interface Serial0
 description line to 2522_router
 ip address 170.17.1.2 255.255.0.0
backup interface bri 0
backup delay 5 25 (it will wait 5 sec before activating the backup line.
Upon restoring of primary line, backup line will remaint active for 25 sec.)
 no fair-queue

Try this.

Re: ISDN backup will not activate [7:25129]

2001-11-02 Thread John Neiberger

What are the results of show int bri0 and show isdn status? That might
alert you to the problem. If you've posted the entire config then you
definitely are missing at least one very important thing.

Look at the results of that output and let us know if the router is
even talking to the ISDN switch at the telco. (hint hint) :-)

Where's the phone number to dial? I've always used a phone number after
the broadcast statement. Like the following:

dialer map ip 172.20.10.2 name New_York_City broadcast 17775551212

2001-11-02 Thread chris

You have no dial string and you also need to tell the router what interface
you want backed up or use a floating static.

Re: ISDN backup will not activate [7:25129]

2001-11-02 Thread EA Louie

I've seen the other replies to you post, and I'll give you a few other
pieces of input. By the way, you really didn't give us any indication of
what you saw as the output from the router - I'll just assume that you saw
nothing.

1. From the configuration, it is not obvious what kind of ISDN switch
you're using. Do you know if you need to add a statement to define the
switch type? (I'd guess yes, unless the rules changed in 12.2)

2. Someone else indicated that you need to check the ISDN status using the
appropriate show command. You'll learn something from doing that check.
Mostly, you'll learn how to read the status of the ISDN circuit, and what
the different fields indicate on the results of the show isdn status
command. Learning the debug commands (debug isdn q921, debug isdn q931) are
also valuable tools. Learn to use them to diagnose a problem.

3. Look at the purpose of the dialer map statement. Someone else indicated
that you need to configure a destination phone number for that. I agree
with that indication. Paris doesn't know what number to dial to reach
New_York_City.

4. Someone suggested using backup-interface. I'd counsel you NOT to go
down that road until you have the point-to-point ISDN configuration stable
and it's coming up when you want it to.

5. Another person suggested that you add an administrative distance to
your static route. That would be a good idea. When you do that, your ISDN
circuit will come up only when the route for the serial link goes away
(assuming that it's the only route to the other router)

6. Some switches prefer/require that you suffix the dialing numbers to the
SPID assignments. Learn which switches need that kind of input.

7. What other resources have you used to learn configuration of ISDN?
There are different layers of ISDN configuration. They are, in order of
bottom to top:
a. the ISDN physical connection itself (S/T interfaces require NT-1's or a
simulator that has an S/T interface, U interfaces have a built-in NT-1)
Cisco 2500 series routers (except the 2524/2525) have an S/T interface. The
2524/2525 has two flavors of modular BRI, S/T or U. Cisco 4000 series NP-4B
and NP-8B have S/T interfaces. I'm not sure about the 26/3600 series, but
I'm sure someone else on the list does know and might be willing to share
that info.
b. ISDN interface establishing communication with the ISDN switch (q921
signalling - requires the correct ISDN switch type configured and the
proper physical connection)
c. ISDN interface obtaining TEI (q931 signalling-requires the ISDN SPIDs
configured properly)
d. triggering the interface to dial (either IP or backup-interface or
snapshot routing, requires the dialer-map and dialer-lists configured
properly)
e. encapsulation negotiation (ppp-requires both routers have a common
encapsulation)
f. authentication (chap-requires username/passwords used in the dialer-map
statements match on both routers)
g. IP routing (static or dynamic routes) over the interface (requires
routing protocol including static to route to the correct destinations via
the BRI interfaces).
h. establishing multilink (requires the dialer-load statement)

8. Extraneous commands in a BRI configuration sometimes spell disaster, so
take out anything that you don't absolutely need from a basic's perspective.

Otherwise, your configuration is a good start. Unfortuately, incomplete BRI
configurations don't work, and don't give you any indication of why they
don't work.

I'll refer you to a very valuable resource, which I still use when I get
stuck on an ISDN configuration. It's Cisco's TAC page for ISDN Technology:
http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/Support/PSP/psp_view.pl?p=Internetworking:ISDN
(watch the URL wrap)

Here's a page with a very basic configuration that you can learn from, step
by step:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/dial
ts_c/dtsprt3/dcdbri.htm (watch the URL wrap)

ISDN is a very complex configuration until you've mastered the basics, which
means understanding the different layers of BRI configuration. I'd suggest
that you study these pages, and then if it still doesn't work, c'mon back
and post the configurations from both routers and the results of some of the
show commands that you'll learn from reading the basic's pages.

Good luck in your studies, and let us know what you learn about ISDN.

Your making it too hard, you don't need the dialer map but you do need a
dialer
string 1800111. Your not telling the interface where to call.

Re: ISDN backup problem [7:19894]

2001-09-13 Thread Nigel Taylor

Alvin,
If I'm not mistaken you BRI circuits should have two(2) channels.
Why not simply set R1 to dial the core on the
1st channel and R2 on the 2nd. Of course you would have to change the
configuration on your core router for to support Dialer Profiles
so you could receive both calls simultaneously If made the config
additions you'll need below. I don't know what routing protocol
you're using if any so I'd suggest using floating statics so as long as the
primary path is down the ISDN circuit will
be the default path out of the network. If there's a dynamic routing
protocol(I'm thinking based on the broadcast keyword in the BRI config)
already running between the core router and R1 and R2, I'm assuming the
ISDN isn't configured based on you're use of the backup interface
command. Anyway, just some thoughts and things to consider... NOTE: ***
You could look at creating a loopback interface on the core router
and using the ip unnumbered loopback command under the dialer profiles
for each connection this way you maintain the existing IP scheme.

The configs for R1 and R2 should stay pretty much the same except R1 will
use the # for BRI line 1 on the CORE router and R2 will use the 2nd..

In each branch office router EIGRP will have

default route through network from core router?

RE: routing issue with ISDN backup [7:13045]

2001-07-20 Thread Ciaron Gogarty

use floating statics for ISND with a higher metric than the default for the
frame

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.10.10.1 (frame route)
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.11.10.1 250 (floating static mapping to ip of
isdn on remote side
a higher metric. route will only
become valid if the other route disappears.)

backup interface BRI2/2
backup delay 5 10

These are all thats required to specify backup interface,

Have you tested the BRI?

Have you added a route with a metric for the ISDN IP range

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10

Can't think of anything else.

2001-07-19 Thread Paul Werner

Comments within and below.

First, I noted that you used the backup interface command on a
physical interface. Have you considered the idea of using
dialer interfaces as the backup interface? When you do this,
it offers you a little bit more flexibility. For example, I
noted that your serial interface is a 128kbps link. You may
want to explore the possibility of using a dialer interface for
two purposes. One purpose would be to act as a backup
interface. Another purpose could be to use it for additional
bandwidth if your primary serial interface gets congested.

it's status
remain unchanged even the serial link goes down .

You are correct. The issue is one of troubleshooting.
Assuming you have a primary link filure, your backup interface
should go active (up and up) after a 5 second delay that you
configured. According to you this is not happening. You have
not mentioned what troubleshooting steps you have taken. When
you remove the backup interface command from the primary
interface, what is the output from show isdn status? Are
layers 1 and 2 good? Assuming they are good, when you place
the backup interface command back on the primary interface,
what happens when you do a debug dialer and a debug ppp neg
after the primary link has been made to fail. Assuming you had
a dialer-list 1 protocol ip permit statement near the end of
your config [note- you didn't post your entire config, so I am
guessing here] you should get a call placed to the other side.
More below...

I have configued the serial int with
 backup interface BRI2/2
 backup delay 5 10
commands . Also i tried to simulate the situation by putting
the modem
 at
Router A off to trigger the backup ISDN call but it does not
happen and
 the
ISDN status remain in standyby mode only.
Can anybody help whether anyadditional command needs to be
put up in
 either
 Serial or Bri interfaces?
I am giving here th configuration of both the routers,
 routerA#

  interface BRI2/2
  description Backup connectivity
  ip address 172.16.128.49 255.255.255.252
  no ip directed-broadcast
  encapsulation ppp
dialer map ip 172.16.128.50 name routerB x
  dialer-group 2
  isdn switch-type basic-net3

I noted that you set your encapsulation to ppp. That is fine.
One of the many/several options for ppp is authentication. You
indicated in your dialer map statement that you will be doing
authentication by use of the name command. Unfortunately
however, you have not specified what method is to be used on
either end of the link. I would start with ppp auth chap.
It ends to be more secure.

 interface Serial1/3
  description Leased link to RouterB
  bandwidth 128
  backup delay 5 10
  backup interface BRI2/2
  ip address 172.16.128.17 255.255.255.252
  no ip directed-broadcast
  no ip route-cache
  no ip mroute-cache

How are you actually testing this? Since you didn't supply a
full config, this is not readily apparent. For example, is
there a LAN on the other side of router B? If so, what is the
network address of the LAN interface? Where is the static (or
other) route that points to this network? When you test your
reachability, do you ping the other side of the WAN link, or
the other side of the LAN network on router B?

 RouterB#
 interface BRI1/2
  description Backup connectivity for RouterA
  ip address 172.16.128.50 255.255.255.252
  encapsulation ppp
  no logging event subif-link-status
  dialer idle-timeout 3000
  dialer wait-for-carrier-time 60
dialer map ip 172.16.128.49 name routerB YYY
  dialer-group 1
  no fair-queue

Here there is an additional problem. Look at the name command
two lines above. The host name following the name command
should be the target you are trying to authenticate, not
yourself. Also, since you didn't post your entire config, I
have no way of knowing whether you set the username/password
lists for both routers. They would look like this and appear
in the global config near the top:

user RouterA pass sameone
user RouterB pass sameone

Note the passwords are the same, also referred to as a shared
secret.

 interface Serial0/0
  ip address 172.16.128.18 255.255.255.252
  logging event subif-link-status
  bandwidth 128

  hold-queue 75 in

 Thanks in advance for help
 Regards

 Bware

This post has gotten kind of long. I will see if I can post an
improved/enhanced config in a separate post, possibly later
today as time permits.

Re: Subject: Why ISDN backup line come up ? [7:12920]

2001-07-19 Thread Brian Wilkins

I ran into a similar problem. In my case, the issue was that I needed to
add a route that the ISDN interface was performing backup for, give it a
higher admin distance, so that it wouldn't bring up the backup interface
unless the primary route failed, and assign it to the interface.

Hope that helps.

routing issue with ISDN backup [7:13045]

2001-07-19 Thread pat

Hello everyone:

I have some routing issue here.

I have central office with a core router sitting
behind the PIX. All branch office (remote) routers
connect to central router using frame relay ISDN as
back up. Each branch office (having 1 Serial, 1 ISDN,
1 Eth Int) should be able get to any other branch
office to Internet through PIX. All IPs used will be
private PIX will be doing NAT.
I am planning on having EIGRP to route between all
routers over frame relay floating static route to
trigger ISDN if FR goes down. This floating static
route will be something like

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.1 200 (10.0.0.1 will
be IP of central router)

In each branch office router EIGRP will have Ethernet
serial networks in it. This will make all internal
routing fine when the network is on FR. But how do I
route Internet traffic to core router so that it can
send to PIX? I am already using default static route
to core router, which I want to be used only when FR
is down. Is there any way in EIGRP to propagate
default route through network from core router?

Thanks a lot,
pat

I will see if I can post an
improved/enhanced config in a separate post, possibly later
 today as time permits.

I went ahead and took your existing configs and preserved as
much as I could from them. I added the functionality of dialer
profiles to the config. This gave three direct benefits.
First, your ISDN interface will no longer be in a down status
because it is a named standby interface. Second, it allows you
to use the ISDN interface to possibly back up a second serial
line should you install one later. Lastly, through the use of
Cisco magic and a few extra lines of configuration, I was also
able to set up your BRI interface to act as a Bandwidth on
demand interface in the event that your primary WAN link gets
congested. Here they are:

debug isdn q931
debug dialer
debug ppp neg

None of the debugs were necessary, unless something didn't
work; I just thought it was fascinating to watch so much

ISDN Backup [7:4462]

2001-05-14 Thread Ambern, Jeff

Just wanted to let the group know of a little trick I came across this
weekend.
I have an ISDN line that I hooked up to a NT1 with two S/T interfaces. I
was able
to connect 2 2504's back to back through the telco cloud. Each router
pulled
one TEI each. This makes it possible to perform dial-backup and other isdn
simulations without paying for 2 isdn lines (just can't do multilink) or
buying an
expensive ISDN sumulator. Just thought I would share because I have never
come across this configuration before.

Yes, its worthwhile. Alot of people find that paying for an NT1 and an
ISDN line is cheaper than the simulator. But with the simulator you can
do dial-backup, BOD, multilink, etc.

Re: Re : ISDN Backup

2000-12-14 Thread jenny . mcleod

You don't need to use the backup delay command if you're using floating
static routes for backup, in fact I'm not sure that it will actually do
anything (how does it know what the secondary interface is without a backup
interface command?), but I've never actually tried using it with floating
statics.
Using floating statics, how quickly the backup line kicks in should depend
on the convergence time of your routing protocol and design. EIGRP should
be pretty quick, generally.
What puzzles me, though, is the statement 'isdn backup is not able to
activate (momentarily activates and then disconnects)'. Do you mean that
the ISDN call doesn't work, or that the call is disconnecting before the
idle timer expires or what?
Generally (depending on bits of the config that you haven't shown), if the
serial link goes down for long enough for the routing table to point to the
ISDN instead, the ISDN will call and will stay up for at least 120 seconds
(default idle time), even if the routing quickly reconverges back to the
serial.
If the serial link goes down (or has errors) for such a short period that
the routing table does not point to the ISDN, then the ISDN won't call at
all.

Does it work OK when the serial link goes down and stays down? If so, how
quickly does the ISDN activate?
If the serial link is flapping, is the ISDN call (including PPP negotiation
if you're using PPP) successful? debug isdn q931 and debug ppp neg or
debug ppp auth may show any connection problems, and debug dialer may show
why it is disconnecting.

You do not have to use the BACKUP INTERFACE command, that is just another
way of doing
it. I like the floating static commands much better, I can test the ISDN
connectivity
without having to take the serial interface down. And the Backup Interface
command does
not work very well in a frame relay situation.

I do agree you need to add the commands for Backup Delay, both for going to
ISDN and
going back to the primary.

As for preventing the WWW traffic when on ISDN, apply an access list to the
BRI to
prevent it.

Re : ISDN Backup

2000-12-14 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi jenny,

Yes, I agree that with floating static routes backup
delay command would not work.
When my serial link is completely down then the ISDN
backup works perfectly well. It is only when the
serial link is flapping that the real problem comes up
as neither the condition of the link is good enough to
handle the load nor does it allow ISDN to takeover.

In such situations how can I prevent downtime by
allowing the ISDN to take the load.

Secondly I wanted to increase the ISDN bandwidth by
adding more ISDN lines.( The present bw is 128kbps
(multilink enabled)
Any hints/suggestions on that would also be
appreciated.

Thanks Regards

Amit

You don't need to use the backup delay command if
you're using floating
static routes for backup, in fact I'm not sure that it
will actually do
anything (how does it know what the secondary
interface is without a backup
interface command?), but I've never actually tried
using it with floating
statics.
Using floating statics, how quickly the backup line
kicks in should depend
on the convergence time of your routing protocol and
design. EIGRP should
be pretty quick, generally.
What puzzles me, though, is the statement 'isdn backup
is not able to
activate (momentarily activates and then
disconnects)'. Do you mean that
the ISDN call doesn't work, or that the call is
disconnecting before the
idle timer expires or what?
Generally (depending on bits of the config that you
haven't shown), if the
serial link goes down for long enough for the routing
table to point to the
ISDN instead, the ISDN will call and will stay up for
at least 120 seconds
(default idle time), even if the routing quickly
reconverges back to the
serial.
If the serial link goes down (or has errors) for such
a short period that
the routing table does not point to the ISDN, then the
ISDN won't call at
all.

Does it work OK when the serial link goes down and
stays down? If so, how
quickly does the ISDN activate?
If the serial link is flapping, is the ISDN call
(including PPP negotiation
if you're using PPP) successful? debug isdn q931 and
debug ppp neg or
debug ppp auth may show any connection problems, and
debug dialer may show
why it is disconnecting.

ISDN Backup Configs

six or so cisco config examples with varying degrees of success. Floating

Why would you need to have primary router and backup
router implementing HSRP even if you had primary
interface and backup interface?
You could do it with one router instead of two.

floating statics alone would not notify the Remote
T1 router of the loss of

ISDN backup for increased bandwidth

2000-10-02 Thread info

We have a site with a quirky FRelay burst pattern. Although
they burst very rarely, the uers seem to all be all too aware of the
times when it is happening. Our usage numbers dont justify
bumping up their CIR so I've been investigating alternatives.

I was wondering if anyone out there uses ISDN backup
to provide more bandwith when the FRelay circuits get
saturated. This seems like it might be a good solution
since it could help out during episodes of bursting.
But is it practical financially? How much more expensive
if an ISDN connection than a Frame Relayat 128k CIR?
This particular site would be calling from Boston to
Santa Clara.

Any insights, comments, etc are greatly appreciated. If
I get enough responses, I'll post a summary.

Greetings all,

someone shed some light on how to properly implement
the backup command with routing?

I'm using the backup command, and ip unnumber for both
primary and backup interfaces.

int loop 0 R3 int s0/0-primary--int s2 R5
int loop 0 (5.0.0.5)

Below is config.

What static route can I use to complete the routing to
the remote end? Because unnumbered addresses is use,
I'm unsure what the static route should look like.
The only thing I can think of is using floating
static, but that sort of defeat the purpose of the
backup command.

Re: isdn backup

2000-09-21 Thread Erik Mintz

What are you trying to backup here? I don't see any routing. Start with a
working primary first and I can probably give you suggestions for a
solution.
Roughly, what you need are two static routes with different weights so the
primary is favored, and the backup is much more costlier, or, set the dialer
as the default route with a static 0.0.0.0 pointing to the primary, that
way, when the primary disappears, the static leaves the table and the dialer
goes up. remember to write an access list on the dialer to prevent dialing
for RIP updates, etc. depending on what type of traffic you have traversing
the router.

Re: isdn backup

2000-09-21 Thread Clue Less

Hi Erik,

I am just trying this out at this stage. For discussion sake, say I
want to get from r3 to network 2.0.0.0 which is on ethernet of R5:

r3-s0/0--primarys2 r5 ---e1 (2.0.0.0/8)
 di1---backup---di1

till using unnumber loop 0 for both primary and backup int.

If static route is to be use, what should it look like?

Your first solution below is using floating static, which I know it
would work. But is there a way to do it without floating static?
Cause if floating static is use, the "backup" command seems
unneccessary.

Not exactly sure what you mean on the second solution, could you
provide sample config?

I got eigrp instead of static route to work earlier, was a bit
surprise to see r3, r5 form neighbor even though they're on different
subnet. r3 (3.0.0.3) r5 (5.0.0.5). does anyone know if this is
right?

ClueLess.

What are you trying to backup here? I don't see any routing. Start with a

solution.
Roughly, what you need are two static routes with different weights so the
primary is favored, and the backup is much more costlier, or, set the dialer
as the default route with a static 0.0.0.0 pointing to the primary, that
way, when the primary disappears, the static leaves the table and the dialer
goes up. remember to write an access list on the dialer to prevent dialing
for RIP updates, etc. depending on what type of traffic you have traversing
the router.

just
make sure that the DLSw referneces the loopback addresses and that you are using
something like eigrp. Put a default router to the other side BRI with a higher
admin distance - such as 200 for example. It will work.. I have it working

If your dlsw peers point to an physical interface that
goes away -- dlsw peers will go away . This is the
main reason to work with loopbacks .

DLSw only requires that the peers are reachable .
For the backup , all routing stuff should be inplace
before 3 DLSw keep-alives . ( 90 seconds )
How you handle that has nothing to do with DLSw .
Floating statics are certainly an option .

ISDN Backup for ISDN BRI

2000-08-21 Thread Radford Dion

Hi everyone.

Is there any way to backup a DDR ISDN line with the same ISDN line? Are you
confused? me too!

Basically I want the router to try dialing one number, and if it fails to
connect, to then try dialing another number?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

If that is what you want to do which is not very effiecent, but...all
you need to do is add another dialer string to the interface and then it
will try the first dial string and then the next one and then next one and
so on.

BCRAN: ISDN backup

2000-08-10 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

When using a BRI interface as a backup interface for a serial interface, the
BRI interface goes into standby mode and cannot be used for anything else.
However, if I make the BRI interface a member of a dialer pool and create
two dialer interfaces for that pool to act as logical interfaces for the one
BRI interface, I can make the dialer interface 1 the backup interface for
the serial interface, and use dialer interface 2 to communicate through my
BRI interface while it's not being used as a backup.

This is all too cool !!! - Now to the questions:

1) What happens if the WAN on the serial interface goes down and the dialer
interface 1 becomes active and then I try to use dialer interface 2?

2) What happens if I am using the dialer interface 2 when the WAN on the
serial interface goes down and the dialer interface 1 wants to use the BRI
interface?

My own guess is that the normal rule for dialer interfaces / dialer pools
takes effect regardless of the backup interface usage, so if a physical
interface is in use by a dialer interface, the requesting dialer interface
will have to wait until the fast-idle timeouts on the active dialer
interface.

Thanks,

Ole

RE: ISDN backup - Time based access lists or backup interface - help needed

2000-06-28 Thread Andrew Larkins

 Hi all.

A client of mine has ISDN backup at all of their sites. A few leased line
flaps during the night caused a rather large ISDN bill for the month. What
I want to know is, is there a way to block the ISDN from dialling at
night. The reason for this is that this is a sales office and is NOT
active 24 hours. We need to have the ISDN line active from around 7am to
7pm, but there after it must NOT be able to dial.
The way the backup ISDN is configured is by means of a default route out
 with a higher administrative distance - ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 x.x.x.x
 200. Routing process is eigrp.

Are time based access lists a good option, and if so, how do I do it?
 OR
Should I change the backup to "backup interface" and specify a longer
 delay before ISDN kicks in?

 All help appreciated
