I have been reading but keeping my fingers off the keyboard waiting to
see how this ends...happy for you kitus...

but, is there really a problem with pickpockets? I haven't heard that
referenced for decades. I thought that the thieves moved on to other

Everyone, after the many hours I spent during the weekend on this, and
thanks to your continuous support, I'm glad to say that my system is
working smoothly. Right now my system:

- usbconnectd is not working in the background, because I don't think
  I need it
- My DAC goes into standby just fine

Looking back at all this, my retrospective would be one really needs to
switch off piCorePlayer on LMS. I think this has been key to improving
my experience, and I know it may sound stupid, but this is what I
believe has changed my situation. Silly change. If this is really what
has solved my main issue, I will feel forever stupid!

On the standby thing, I understand that only @ralphy would be in a
position to include additional DACs, as the "magic file" will need to be
tailored to the specific IDs of the DAC in particular and that file is
created by usb-power. I'm simply lucky that all Topping models seem to
be presented to Tiny Core the same way.

As a bonus, since my automation platform of choice detected piCorePlayer
on day 1, I'm now even able to switch my amp power socket on and off
depending on piCorePlayer status. Isn't this cool?? I think it is!! :)

It's moved to /tmp on install because the file is unwritable, that's why
one gets the message

Code:

  tc@pCP:~$ cat /lib/udev/rules.d/01-topping-e30-dac-usb-power.rules
  cat: can't open '/lib/udev/rules.d/01-topping-e30-dac-usb-power.rules': No

Moved the extension into this folder

Code:

/etc/sysconfig/tcedir/optional

and it now seems to have been loaded during boot process

Code:

tc@piCorePlayerLMS:/mnt/mmcblk0p2/tce/optional$ tce-status -i | grep usb
  libusb
  usb-power

and the magic file appears to be there

Code:

tc@piCorePlayerLMS:/mnt/mmcblk0p2/tce/optional$ cat

  ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="152a",

@slartibartfast, now that I'm trying to remember to turn off
picoreplayer every time I'm done listening to music, usbconnectd may not
be necessary. In the past though, I would find myself very often:

I may have been to way off, but using usbconnectd was my desperate move
in order to get my system to work without me needing to open a cli and
force reboot squeezelite. I ended up connecting my DAC to the same smart
powerstrip that I use for my amplifier. That way, I would power cycle my
DAC when I was about to start listening to some music. usbconnectd would
kill and start squeezelite as soon as the DAC come online. With this I
accomplished being able to pull out my phone, open LMS and start playing
some music right on my phone.

But I may have also got all of this wrong from the start.

So it looks like indeed the usb-power is supposed to create that file. I
had asked this earlier.

In my case I don't see that file being created

Code:

tc@piCorePlayerLMS:/var/log$ ls -l /tmp/tcloop/usb-power*
ls: /tmp/tcloop/usb-power*: No such file or directory

and usb-power.tcz is on the list of extensions to be started during boot
time

Code:

tc@piCorePlayerLMS:/var/log$ cat /etc/sysconfig/tcedir/onboot.lst
  pcp.tcz
  pcp-8.2.0-www.tcz
  slimserver.tcz
  ntfs-3g.tcz
  exfat-utils.tcz
  samba4.tcz
  uhubctl.tcz
  nano.tcz
  usb-power.tcz

and

Code:

tc@piCorePlayerLMS:/var/log$ cat /mnt/mmcblk0p2/tce/onboot.lst
  pcp.tcz
  pcp-8.2.0-www.tcz
  slimserver.tcz
  ntfs-3g.tcz
  exfat-utils.tcz
  samba4.tcz
  uhubctl.tcz
  nano.tcz
  usb-power.tcz

@ronnie, did you do anything to get usb-power to create that file other
than loading the extension manually and ensuring it is listed on the
onboot.lst?

thanks!

Well I just restored them and rebooted

Pressing the green power button just pauses the playback.

If I pull and replug the usb cable the dac starts the stanby process, I
have to re start squeezelite to stop it.

I have to say, it all seems a bit unnecessary, just for shutting things
down; although I can understand your wanting to cure the original
problem :)

Do you still hava de daca ?

I have it working now :)

Unplugging the usb lead to the dac did the trick (as per your comments
on the github thread)

But that's not a good thing.

I removed the uhubctl instructions from the Tweaks page and restarted
squeezelite; the dac started to go into standby when I pressed the green
power button on the LMS gui.

I restored playback and then used the pCP shutdown command to close the
pi, the dac followed suit.

I repowered the raspberry pi, the dac came on line and I started
playback

Pressing the LMS power button now only paused playback.

I interrupted the usb power supply to the dac (I did not pull the dac
power plug or pull the usb cable from the dac, I 'used one of these'
(https://www.aqvox.de/usb-power_en.html) in the dac usb connection

I had to restart squeezelite to restore playback but the power switch
then put the dac into standby

Not very good really.

As you seemed to hint at in the github thread a cron job to stop / start
the usb-power after restart might solve the problem.

Or use the remote control to select an used input on the dac :):)

The raspberrypi OS works much better in this respect.

Using the -C option only releases/closes the audio device. It does not
shutdown the squeezelite instance.

There was an 'issue #153'
(https://github.com/ralph-irving/squeezelite/issues/153) around starting
squeezelite with -C and the audio device was already in use and fixed in
1.9.9r1392.

I use this option daily and it's been working fine for me.

If you don't unplug pCP or your DAC I don't understand why you need
usbconnectd. I thought it was only needed to restart Squeezelite when an
unplugged DAC was switched on again.

  slimserver.tcz
  nano.tcz
  pcp-lame.tcz

I would typically not switch off the picoreplayer on LMS. I never
thought it was necessary, but now that I come to think about it, having
a player that all of the sudden "sees" that the next device downstream
(the DAC) either goes offline, is in standby, or whatever, could be part
of the problem. I will now try to remember this from today and on.

What usbconnectd does is, it monitors inputs and choses the best one,
based on what it sees. Once that input has been chosen, it will kill
squeezelite and ensure it starts anew. And this has proven to be
bridging the gap that I see in my setup... well, at least at this point
where I have not yet managed to implement usb-power, udev rule, etc.,

Good question. My understanding was a bit different: I understood that
squeeze little would detach itself from the audio bridge/channel, after
the number of seconds configured right after "-C"

-C
Close the output device after seconds of the player being
idle; the default is to always keep the device open as long as the payer
is "on".

Would you please explain about this setting, I think I have alway
misunderstood the function it performs.

I thought that -C stopped squeezelite, but does it just cause it to drop
the output connection and remain running

If I use the green power button on the LMS web gui to stop a radio
stream, wait for thirty secs or so (-C is set to 5) and then run

Code:

sudo systemctl status squeezelite.service

I get this

Code:

Is this the correct state to be reported ?

Or does running the command restart a paused service ? I did not note

If Stop the playback by running

Code:

  sudo systemctl status squeezelite.service

and then run the Status query, it is shown as stopped.

Yep, that is already something I configured yesterday. I saw that in the
GitHub issue shared earlier by @slartibartfast.

Once it is loaded during startup, will it then create the udev rule
during the boot-up process? How do I confirm it is the case? What will
the filename be if so?

Help me understand this:
- say that usb-power is loaded during startup, and I’m assuming it
creates the rule on the fly during start-up.
- what else do I need to do? Will then the power button be in a position
to put the DAC to sleep?
- I’ve seen that slartibartfast mentioned that the two user commands he
states in the GitHub issue are still needed. Not sure what would lead me
to confirm that I need to include those, but adding these commands feels
like the “topping” on the cake.

Is there anything else I’m missing? I myself created one issue in GitHub
framing my particular case a couple of weeks ago. If I ever manage to
solve my issue, I swear I will document the changes in that Guthub site…

Squeezelite is either off or on

If it has the -z flag it is always on (in the background)

If it has the -C flag then it will drop the connection after the
specified time.

When I have this setting in raspberry PI OS and I run the squeezelite
status it still shows as running

This is taken at 10 56am. with Squeezelite paused and the dac in
standby.

Code:

It's the new build from this morning, using Gerrelt's scripts and
squeezelite is daemonised, but even without -z I'm certain I have seen
it show as running

I think the -C option no longer seems to work, as I can run librespot
and squeezelite through the same output without -C being set, and I sure
that was not always the case

To have the usb-power extension load at boot you need to add
usb-power.tcz to the end of /mnt/mmcblk0p2/tce/onboot.lst

Re: [slim] In love with SqueezeLite and LMS. Frustrated at the same time.

2022-12-10 Thread Man in a van

My LMS runs on a rpi4b which is left on 24/7

I have several dacs to choose from, but each one has a raspberry pi as a
Squeezelite player.

So, with a Topping dac;

When I stop listening to music, I pause the player and send a remote
signal via a smartphone app to "sudo shutdown -h now" (that's two taps
on the 'phone).

The player stops (but is still powered) the dac stops and goes into
standby.

My active Mackies go into standby

All are connected to the same power strip, which I then power off at the
wall.

I normally use a Raspberry PI OS but sometimes run cCP if I am trying
something for someone else.

The procedure is the same, but if the player is pCP squeezelite I just
leave it powered until the last step.

Mmm, not sure what that switch is. I’ve tried switching off the player
on the LMS interface. Do you refer to that one? If so, as there are
multiple combinations (DAC in standby, DAC powered off, switch on,
switch off, etc.), I’m not sure I’ve tested all possible escenarios.

What do you typically do when you are done listening to music? Do you
switch off the player on LMS interface, then you power off your DAC?

Well, in your case your setup is more refined because you have managed
to put your DAC in standby by clicking on the player power button. I
wonder what others do… but I will certainly pay more attention to the
outcome that I get when I switch off the player on LMS, when I’m done
listening to music!

HAHAHAH I will try to remember that!

@ronnie, my biggest issue is not DAC standby. What really pisses me off
is what I posted in my last message:

Code:

a few hours or minutes since I have stopped playing music with LMS + pCP)
Squeezelite believes it is actually doing so, but in reality no sound comes
through the speakers, unless I manually restart squeezelite every time I want
to listen to some music. Restarting pCP is not that convenient when you are not
in front of a computer, and it is a mood killer.

I really have not figure out what pattern triggers that behaviour; in
other words, I'm not sure if it the triggering condition is, any idle
time beyond 17min and 52sec (or you name it) will get my setup into this
deadlock or what. What I can say is that this behaviour is consistent
across the previous Topping that I tested (E50) or my current D90, or
even with the built-in DAC inside my Cambridge Amplifier. And I'm very
surprised this is not something other people experience, but it is very
annoying.

Yesterday I gave a new try to 'usbconnectd'
My coding skills are terrible, but I came to understand that I could
change the behaviour of this script so that it is a bit more aggressive.
I have connected the DAC now into the same smart powerstrip that
provides power to my amplifier, which means that the DAC is mostly
powered off and I only power it on when I'm about to listen to music. If
I get usbconnectd to consistently kill squeezelite when my RPI "sees" my
DAC, I will have managed to solve the most annoying thing that I have
now on my list.

But again, I'm surprised this only happens to me. I can't think about
other potential combinations that can be the culprit in my case, as I
have seen people in here using RPI 3B+, so I'm ruling out this
particular flavour of RPI being responsible for this.

I hope somebody hears my desperate cry for help!

I woke up really early today and could not get back to sleep

Popped the heating on and got up about 3.30 am

A Paddington toast and marmalade with an instant nescafe and I was
looking for something to do :(

Several hours later;

I have a working Raspberry PI OS Bullseye 32bit Lite OS, running LMS
v8.3.1, Squeezelite, Raspotify into my Topping DX3 Pro.

I used 'Gerrelt's scripts'
to run Squeezelite (which I may change to a plain system.service)

Thanks to -*slarti*-, -*ralphy*- and -*clivem*- I popped an addition
into the OS udev folder (sudo nano etc/udev/rules.d/99-com.rules)

' (https://github.com/ralph-irving/squeezelite/issues/114)
and rebooted.

I can now press pause, or the green power button, and the dac goes into
standby :)

For myself I would just select an unused dac input using the remote :p

-*@kitus*-, next time you are out for a bottle of milk, please rember a

Hi Ralph,

could you give me a had to ensure I manage to get my setup work the way
it is described 'here'

If I understood 'this post'
(https://github.com/ralph-irving/squeezelite/issues/114) correctly, by
having usb-power extension loaded upon start, a udev rule should have to
have been created during system start, right? That is at least what I
understood from this statement

Code:

Your picoreplayer will backup the current configuation and reboot.

After the reboot you should have the new udev rule.

I would be very thankful if you provided some guidance to making my
system go into standby when pressing the on/off button on LMS. Making my
DAC go into standby is important, but
_it_is_way_way_more_important_to_solve_my_biggest_issue_: every so often
(starting a few hours or minutes of not using LMS + pCP) Squeezelite is
not able to produce any sound through the speakers, unless I manually
restart squeezelite every time I want to listen to some music. Rebooting
pCP is not that convenient when you are not in front of a computer, and
it is a mood killer.

I remember that at some point @Man in a van suggested the standby issues
that I experience may, or may not be connected with what is really
making my system behave that way, but the reality is that this is the
one single missing to have a great system in place. I'm surprised it is
only me who is reporting this kind of problems, but it really is a
bummer.

What is more interesting is that this issue happens with a Topping E50
or a Topping D90, but also with the built-in DAC in my integrated
amplifier! I've seen people here in this forum who are very happy with
their Raspberry Pi 3B+ so that can't be the problem either.

This is desperate cry for help!!! :(

Using an extension makes it easy for a DAC E30 user but more difficult
if you want to do edits.

1. Install the usb-power extension and uhubctl if necessary.
2. Edit the udev rule to contain the correct Id for your DAC
3. Add the two uhubctl commands in pCP user commands.

Reboot. I think that should do it.

I'm at a loss. Downgrading pCP is not an issue for me. I could do that
and check if I get that extension. Then I can upgrade the system and
keep my fingers crossed. But my issue now is that after reading the
GitHub thread a couple of times, I really don't get the full picture of
what needs to be done. I think I will give this a new try during the

The gotcha for me with that udev rule was that the rule didn't work
after a restart unless the usb was removed and reinserted. That is why I
needed to add the two uhubctl commands to user commands at start up. A
lot of the thread on GitHub is taken up with me spending a lot of time
thinking the udev rule wasn't working until I finally realised what was
going on. On Raspbian the udev rule works without any messing around at
start up so I thought pCP would behave in the same way.

I don't think so?

If someone finds it let me know. The original source has stopped being
available.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the box, but I have not found any of these
udev solutions to work 100%, there was always a gotcha.

@others playing with udev

Various solutions have work arounds for the numerous gotchas.

A tip, do a [Full Update] squeezelite to "Squeezelite v1.9.9-1414-pCP".
You should get a more robust init.d squeezelite script. I recommend
using the force option.

usb-power is not available as an extension that one can install. I
assume it is now part of the core OS.
The udev rule simply monitors the USB port to detect that a certain usb
device (the DAC) becomes available, right? I see in the GitHub issue
that one of the developers included that ad-hoc for you because that
part of the file system is read only?

then the next step will be to restart squeezelite using a script? is my
understanding correct?

Those commands only toggle the usb port off and on at start up to make
sure the udev rule takes effect. So you still need the udev rule but I
have a feeling
usb-power.tcz
might have been added to the pCP repository so check there first. You
will need to edit the udev rule to change the idProduct to that of your
DAC (obtained from lsusb) assuming idVendor remains the same.

Thanks! I had already done so. I have tested these commands from the CLI
and they work just fine. I'm able to power on and off the corresponding
USB port, and after a while the DAC either goes into standby or gets out
of it.

Now, after adding these commands on pCP UI, I'm still trying to digest
the rest of the long GitHub post, and whether or not the rest of the all
the tweaks are needed in my case or note. That is a heck of a long
thread...

Help me understand this: the whole thread deals with the audible noise
and you tried to reproduce the noise by turning on and off the port. So
far so good. But why do you need the udev rule for? I still haven't
figured that out...

I think lsusb from a command prompt tells you which ports devices are
on. My commands work on a Pi3B, other Pis could be different. Strangely
I didn't need those commands on Raspbian, only for pCP

Yes, this is expected. When the DAC senses that no signal is being
input, it will go into standby.

While the DAC is offline (fully powered off), if you reboot pCP, it
won't be able to initialise squeezelite, right? I reported this 'here'
(https://github.com/ralph-irving/squeezelite/issues/173). I would expect
it to be able to start, even the USB DAC is not detected.

@slartibartfast, where did you put this commands?

Code:

I added
  user command 1 uhubctl -l 1-1 -p 4 -a 0
  user command 2 uhubctl -l 1-1 -p 4 -a 1
which toggles the power to USB port 4. This works without any added time
delay so I think that is good enough for me.

Re: [slim] In love with SqueezeLite and LMS. Frustrated at the same time.

2022-12-08 Thread kitus

All right, I see I have accidentally triggered some activity here :)

I'm going to try and answer the few questions I seem to have picked up.

1. What do I do when I go out go fetch a bottle of milk?

I go to LMS and stop the active Tidal stream.

2. What I would expect would happen?

I would expect pCP would simply let go of the transmission channel. My
DAC would notice activity ceases and it would silently go into standby.
None of this works.

3. @slartibartfast, I'm going to carefully examine those udev rules.
Even with a clean pCP and LMS installation (I started anew yesterday
evening) this is my experience since I started yesterday from scratch:
The last thing I did was setup the whole environment with pCP and LMS. I
confirmed music was playing just fine and went to bed. A few hours later
(like 8h later) I decided now I would play some music. This is what
happened:

I switched on my amp. My DAC was in standby (I had manually forced
standby when I went to bed because pCP wouldn't allow it to go into
standby). I chose a new song in Tidal on LMS. My DAC wouldn't wake up
automatically. I woke it up by using the remote control. The DAC woke
up. No music came out of my speakers. I switched to a new song track.
Nothing. Nada. I skipped the current song. Nada. I then went to pCP
admin interface and restarted pCP. Music started to sound.

Having to go to pCP admin interface and force a restart is utterly
annoying.

This is a Radio Paradise stream, I shut down the raspberry pi with the

The usb icon on the dac flashes for one minute and then goes into

I wait a few minutes and repower the raspberry pi; the dac comes back to

I repeat the process

Then whilstplaying I power off the dac, it goes into standby and then I
unplug it.

I shutdown the the raspberrypi and wait for a few minutes.

Power on the raspberrypi; power up the dac, it autoselects usb

I go to LMS web gui, refresh and select a Radio Paradise stream, music
plays.

I'll adjust the squeezelite output command to match that for Kitus's
output and make a copy of the image.

For my E30 I used my udev rule on both pCP and Raspbian. They both
worked but in a different way. On pCP the DAC would go into standby
after playback stopped, while the Raspbian only entered standby when I
clicked the player power button in LMS. Probably some setting pCP I
suppose. Incidentally a coax connected Touch also doesn't allow an E30
to go into standby.
The power saving in Standby is miniscule anyway (0.1W on mine) so apart
from being annoying to see the orange display is it worth using standby?

I don't think the output setting is related (at the moment, anyway) to
the dac problem.

Please describe how the stanby function does not work.

How do you ensure that the standby function in enabled, music is playing
and you want to go and get a bottle of milk from the corner shop;

what do you do ?

I just started with a clean pCP and LMS install. Added -C 10, just to
allow a bit more idle time. My DAC won’t go into standby. It looks like
pCP will keep the interface up and that results in my DAC not letting go
of the channel, and always remaining on. Back to square one I believe.

This works like a charm with the lms-connect app for the

2022-12-07 Thread Redrum

I read the OP yesterday and decided to keep quiet as to not be a
distraction. Something I should do more often.

I use a pi3b+ with pcp as a server, but I have no squeeze lite devices.
But I had one thought, so I returned here today. Why not just start with
a fresh install of pcp on your 3b+, follow the "how to's" exactly, and
see if you can get good behavior out of the headphone jack? You can use
phones/buds, or just use a jack->rca cable and plug it into an
amp/speakers.

>From what I remember, to get that far takes just a few minutes. Get that
working, then take the next step. Identify the step that breaks it...or,
cheer if it just works in the end :)

If you decide to try this, make sure you check everything at each step
(i.e. your spotify connect issue too)

Have a look at this thread for a possible setting that will help with
the standby issues with PcP. Basically you need to choose the output
device that has "front:" listed.

many different installations and easily switch back any time. In fact
you don't even need many SD cards. Once you find a reliable method to
backup and restore you can reuse them. I've had Macrium Reflect (free)
installed on my laptop for years and very rarely used it for anything. I
tried using it to backup my Pi SD card and it worked perfectly and only
backed up the used sectors meaning it can be easily restored to a
smaller SD card if necessary.

Thanks Sam! one quesiton: do you somehow relate to the issues I
described? I will find a spare SD as suggested by RobbH, and give this a
try! Are you on a premium subscription?

Thanks for investing the time to answer my question. Any potential hint
is much appreciated, regardless of whether it solves my issues or not.
I do know that pCP is not a commercial solution. I know it is very much
a donation based project (I donated a few bucks recently) :)
I will take a look at the "Close output setting"! :)

I would suggest looking into the Max2Play distribution. Been using it
for 6+ years. Check it out 'here' (https://www.max2play.com/en/).

@kitus

Don't forget there are other audio distributions to try.

Or, you can load squeezelite and LMS onto Raspberry Pi OS (other another
version of Linux).

I do not know if I can help you, as I have no experience with your
issues, so anything I say is mainly speculation. I have very little
expertise; I'm just a user of LMS who likes to tiniker. There is a very
good chance that everything I say will turn out to be wrong!

Philosophically, I think starting anew makes sense, but you do not have
to ditch entirely the current setup in order to do so. Just set the
current SD card aside and start over with a fresh SD card. You can
always go back to the current one if the second attempt does not work
out. You are a lot more familiar with pCP now than when you first set it
up, so it is possible that you misunderstood or overlooked something
then. Is it likely? I don't know, but it should be easy to try.

I have one suggestion for you. As I said, it is not based on any
personal experience, so it may not be helpful.

In the pCP (not LMS) web interface, go to the Squeezelite Settings tab.
About halfway down the page there is a field for "Close output setting."
Put some value in that field and click the "Save" button below. This
will tell Squeezelite to release the output device after a number of
seconds (the value you put in the field) of silence. This is intended to
allow Squeezelite to share the output device with other players, instead
of keeping it locked when not in use. It is not intended to help with
your situation, and it may not. But since it does require Squeezelite to
reconnect with the output device when it is used again, I think it might
be worth a try.

I hope I am not wasting your time with this suggestion, although that
may well be the case. Good luck!

Incidentally, you may already be aware of this, but just in case it
might be helpful to know that Squeezelite is not a commercial product.
No one is paid to maintain it. When work is done on it, it is done in
spare time, as available. You may not see signs of progress, especially
if it is not clear that the problem is within Squeezelite.

Usually running latest beta LMS nightly on Raspberry Pi OS with virtual
players (Squeezelite and Airplay bridge). Occasionally using SB Radio,
Boom or Classic.
