[Elecraft] RE: KRX3 Inventory Question: Foam Pads: THANKS!
Thanks to all who responded with information for using the foam included, either by splitting it into two pieces or using it as a single strip. Further inventory checks found a bigger problem in the parts received. The box labeled as containing a 2.8-KHz filter contained instead a 6-KHz filter! Email has been sent to Elecraft for an exchange ASAP. 73, Jeff K8ND -Original Message- From: Jeff Maass [mailto:jma...@k8nd.com] Sent: Thursday, January 01, 2009 3:54 PM To: 'elecraft@mailman.qth.net' Subject: KRX3 Inventory Question: Foam Pads I have just inventoried my KRX3 box preparatory to installing it into the K3. [Elecraft] Differenced Between Filter KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw and KFL3A-2.8K?
I was planning to take a block of hours tomorrow to add the KRX3 to my K3/100. One of the things to do is to replace the 2.7-KHz filter with the 8-pole 2.8-KHz filter in the main receiver. I have one KFL3A-2.8K that I ordered a while ago for this purpose. Now I see from the Elecraft order page that there is the note: Order KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw instead if replacing 2.7 kHz stock filter. Does anyone know what the different is between KFL3A-2.8K and KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw? [Elecraft] THANKS! RE: Differenced Between Filter KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw and KFL3A-2.8K?
Thanks to all who replied. I understand now that the separate price for initial orders to account for the swapping of the standard 2.7-KHz part with the 2.8-KHz part. When I ordered my K3/100 (s/n 1192), the 2.8-KHz filters were backordered. This predated the separate part numbers. The 2.8-KHz filter for the K3 main receiver was received here a while ago as the backorder cleared, but has not yet been installed. I just wanted to make sure that I can still swap in that part while I'm also installing the KRX3. Since 2.57 to 2.67: My K3/100 has always clicked when it powered on. I thought it was just the relays resetting or some initialization. Is the click on the speaker or in the relays on the board(s) ? Upon boot up the K3 also keys the amp for a split second too. I just assumed that in the boot up initialization this was intentional. One thing that seems odd but acceptable is when I insert the headphone jack, the audio reroute from the speaker to the headphones is not instant. RE: [Elecraft] TRAVELING WITH THE K3
I'm afraid that carrying the K3 as carry-on is not going to be practical, since I already have my two items (carry-on and personal item) planned. One is $13K of camera and lenses, and the other is my laptop and supporting photography hardware. This laptop workstation cost more than the cost of my full-up K3/100! This is for a trip to the PJ2T contest station for CQWW 160 CW in January, and I *always* carry more electronics and fragile equipment than can be put into carry-on items. This will be my thirteenth trip to Curacao since 2002, and so far (knock head) I haven't lost so much as a pair of underwear from checked luggage. I've purchased a Pelican 1550 case for the K3/100, which I'll lock with a TSA lock and put inside one of my large hard-sided checked bags. [Elecraft] K3 Diversity Rx and antennas
I'm just waiting for the lovely lady at Elecraft to send me the gram for the sub-rx. In the mean time I'm contemplating the 2nd wire antenna to hoist up for diversity Rx. My QTH is surrounded by dense trees, cedar 120+ ft tall. Think planet Endor, ewoks, and pesky storm troopers around every corner. Now for the 2nd wire antenna, I was envisioning a Beverage because I can run 1000' wire over 7acres in a loop within 30' off the ground without getting snagged by the branches. Over 30' then I run into problems with very dense branches acting as barbs in the wrong direction preventing wire from going up. My main Tx antenna is a wire dipole at 25m cut and somewhat even on each side for 80-20m work. I'm tempted to take it down and make a new one for 160m + 80m-20m work. Anyway, the question is: for Diversity Rx, would a 15-25' off the ground Beverage be suitable? Or, does diversity work best if the polarization is opposite, -- among the variables involved with wire antennas, what variable to I look for to increase the benefit of having diversity Rx? [Elecraft] K3 Unsettling Moment on 20m
I was cookin' pretty good yesterday in the kitchen, got that 12lb bird roasted up just fine and I thought today, Black Friday, I would be just as good on 20m. And so I thought I worked a couple ZS stations among a lot of North American DX, thank you, that was fun. But what sort of made me turn pale was when AC7DX politely and very respectfully came to my CQ and said that in essence, my SSB was spread across 10kc 10!? Uh never in my wildest imagination would I thought I was messing up the band like that. I turned off the amplifier and the results were nearly the same. He went on to explain in his Pro3 that he has bank of Rx filters and Tx filters. I tried to cull from memory that the K3 has a bank of 5 Xtal filters and they are used both for Rx and Tx. And, that the widest filter, in my case the 5-pole 2.7 stock filter was where my SSB was going through on Tx. So, I need to dial into the collective knowledge here- What was going on? When I transmit on the K3, SSB (USB in this case) and my widest filter is 2.7KHz how on earth is my signal getting received 10Kc wide? I put the HO-10 scope on and saw a nice trapezoidal pattern, linearity seems linear enough. I was driving 80W int the SB-200 with new valves with a 550W-600W output on the tuner. Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR (was making K3 RX audio like K2)
Down in the valley where the less-than-DXCC serfs eke out their lives hoping to make another new-one, I for one just enjoy the capability to adjust the receiver to new filters or shifting the cut-off better than the YaeKenCom radio I was used to using. If I were to re-read the K3 operator manual (and a fine manual it is) I would simply add more trivia to my brain as to what the capabilities are. But what I'd really enjoy sitting down with is a K3 for Dummies guide to using the enhanced receiver capabilities of the K3 over the lower class of radios. I'm stepping up from a FT-897D to the K3. I can tell the difference. It's obvious. But, I'm sure I'm missing out on more -- and that's entirely my own project to find out. I am looking forward to it! Here's the other proof of the difference. I'm getting for the first time comments about the audio quality on the K3 -- before they even know what rig it is. Never heard a word like that on the FT-897. I never operated the big$ rigs like 7#00 or pro{123}, or ft/ts-2000 to compare. -jeff -- Jeff Wandling DE W7BRS K3 #2105 http://w7brs.com/k3 [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Thu, 20 Nov 2008, GW0ETF wrote: Vic, You probably won't be using NR at these narrow bandwidths anyway; it's been explained before by Lyle and quoted in the message in this thread from Bill W4ZV: NR is rarely useful if the bandwidth is narrow. Re: [Elecraft] frozen K3
Don't worry, it'll get fixed: I ran into the very same problem. Turned out the culprit was my Dell notebook computers were the cause. The serial ports were not robust enough, compared to a PC. Turn on the radio as such: (A or B) A: HOLD the power button for a couple seconds. Let it sit for about a minute B: Hold HI/LO down while TAPping power. Let it sit for about a minute. (I found B worked more often than A. The key is to wait a bit.) Then restart the Utility Test the serial connection. Upon success, re-attempt to load the firmware. Even if it fails again with resync errors, keep re-trying. After about 5-6 times it may work. If that fails, load the MCU/DSP with a desktop computer and avoid using a notebook computer that reveals the condition. If you have a spare PC handy and want to get back into the contest, try loading the firmware with the desktop PC first. I've been where you are; it's unsettling. But it'll work once you get a good serial port to load with. Other things you probably already checked... snugness of connection, versions of firmware, working straight DB-9 cable. If you make your own, as the manual says, you only need pins 2,3 and 5 -- which you can make with spare CAT5 network cable. Tips from Elecraft that were explained to me recently: If the load fails, only try to reload the same MCU that failed .. Until it loads keep the same version in your attempts. Use a Desktop PC if you can. If your notebook computer works for you great, but try a desktop if that gives you the resynch errors. -jeff -- Jeff Wandling DE W7BRS K3 #2105 http://w7brs.com/k3 [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Sat, 15 Nov 2008, Todd Ruby wrote: i am in trouble here. i tried to download the beta 263 version. and the utility kept trying many attempts to initiate the down load but it would not commence and i kept seeing Resynchronized at block XXX response N sent 67, 2 attempts so i used force quit and restarted it and then it became frozen with MCU LD on the screen and the utility saying it is not responding. i got turned off the radio and held the power button down for 10 seconds and went ahead and sent in all firmware. i thought i had it back but the dsp load keeps failing and giving me an error I am kicking myself for trying to mess with the radio in the middle of a contest!! anyone have any help to offer? 73 de todd WB2ZAB ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Summary of brick issue
I was somewhat nervous about the error message I sent so I had not thought through my email message clearly. The issue is not any of the following: 1. Firmware version 2. Utility version 3. Cable, serial port, or communication over RS-232. The issue is this: In a nutshell, user error. But the user (me in this case!) was un-aware of the rules to follow: The Utility was directed by the user to move certain firmware files to the K3 and the configuration of the Utility interface was not concordiant with the version of the firmware files. In short, I did not realize I had left the check-box checked above the button Check new version. After a few attempts, I was able to make the Utility load without error. It was nervous for me because being firmware, seeing errors on the load raised the hair on the back of my neck because things like that can often render the platform a brick. I knew in the back of my mind that Wayne and Lyle had made the process robust and enough bootstrap code should/would be on the K3 to bring up the executable on the K3 to handle a new MCU DL. In the documentation there are two methods described for resetting the K3 if the MCU load fails: 1 a) pull the power b) Hold the POWER button and wait about 10 seconds then go to step 3. 2 a) pull the power b) HOLD HI/LO while TAP POWER and wait about 2 seconds then go to step3 3 a) Re try loading the MCU - starting the Utility, re-confirming communication to the K3, and then choosing the firmware, etc.. The resynchronization error is a loading error by the Utility getting in the weeds because of the aforementioned configuration of the firmware data and the Utility settings (AFAIK). I've been trying to think of the use-case for what caused it, but it becomes nebulous because I don't know enough about the protocol used by the Utility and the meaning of the data in the S-code files. A block diagram of how the Utility works would be great. How it parses the first file, and etc. Why was it so difficult to get the MCU load to work after the Re-synch error? Method #1 did not work for me to re-try the MCU load. I was only able to get the K3 to succeed in testing the Serial port after a failed MCU load if I used method #2 to re-start the K3. The good news is that I was able to reload the MCU w/o Resync errors, but it was that moment of uhh oh, you know what I mean? If I could make a suggestion to the documentation team about this: The documentation of the error messages in the Utility doesn't seem to cover this error. I searched the Help file on the Utility. There also could be a little more treatment in the K3 manual over loading MCU and fool proof steps for loading in these use cases: 1. Upgrading to a newer MCU 2. Downgrading to an older MCU And, for the support team, I'd suggest putting much more online with respect to past versions of the MCU. 2.57 isn't _that_ old, right? It's not on the web site in a downloadable form, unless you know the secret URL. All is well that ends well. -jeff ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Q re Missing K3 Kit part
It's not a show stopper. It just helps you provide a little extra pressure as you push the FP to the RF board. It's nylon, it doesn't make a connection so there's no apparent impact to the circuit. I didn't have the stand off either in my kit SN 2105. I managed to use my finger to push the DSP board (tight squeeze) as I sandwiched the FP+DSP onto the RF board. You have to be careful not to flex the boards. It'll go. The connectors on the RF board to the FP will mate easier than you think. Be careful, but it's not a show stopper. Of course, Elecraft may have a different answer... -jeff On Sat, 8 Nov 2008, Grant Youngman wrote: I'm missing one lousy part -- a 5/8 nylon standoff that gets mounted on the DSP board (assembly errata E-7, item 3) to provide some spacing from the front panel board. [Elecraft] K3 Not a kit
I just got my K3/100 today, S/N 2105. I'm about a third through the assembly and I wanted to comment to the list (those who are on the fence about ordering one, especially) My skepticism was pretty high before I got it, I ordered the unit wading through email about revisions to the firmware and wondering if the hubbub was going to resolve. Let me say that this K3 is no kit. It's a radio that just arrives in parts. Everything goes together as if was machined, which it was to some extent, but there is not a single thing I can find in the manufacturing quality to give me the slightest bit of reservation about having the K3. I expect the radio performance to be equally good. I just wish I could finish the assembly sooner than later to work the radio. It's pretty exciting stuff. The hardest part is just sorting the hardware. It goes together really smoothly. I'm anxious to finish, and when the coffers refill, order more Elecraft goodies ;-) Kudos to the Elecraft team. I look forward to being ready to join the K3 nets. I am looking forward to working SSB/CW with the filter options too. [Elecraft] K3 YAKY
Yet Another K3 Yarn It was dark snowy night last winter, 2007 and I was staying warm in the shack by the glow of my SB-200 and the propane heater in the corner rag chewing on the NW 10m net. The snow flakes were just piling up on the ham shack and the nondeterminsitic pings and clicks from the propane heater were the only ambient noise above the dull whrr of the amp. A fellow remarked that he was selling his Pro2 and was going to roll up the proceeds with that and other things to get his K3. I was interested in the Pro2 because I got to play a little with it at his shack a few weeks prior. Then the twisted idea popped in my head, why don't I get a K3? So after pacing around the shack, I pressed submit on my order. Oh dear God what have I done. Oh well. Then as I waited and read, I began to wonder, what Have I done? The K3 review came out in QST and it was glowing, of course. I've hardly seen a bum review. It was excruciating to wait, then the devil hopped up on my shoulder and told me lies. He told me that the radio wasn't ready and the firmware was spaghetti and on and on. I pulled the plug on the order probably just before Katie was ready to put the postit note on my box ship it baby. I had become hooked on CW and part of the reason for getting the K3 was the built in decoder. I knew I could get Mighty Fine Junk decoder for a lot less than a K3 (hi hi) but it would be built into the rig! It was just the ticket for me to keep up copy as I learned. Then another addiction got me, amatuer satellites. I built up a modest satellite station in between my regular HF rig equipment and noticed that CW was really essential for working some of the birds, especially that old girl AO-7. So CW did it. I replaced my order for the K3 and ignored the mailing list until recently. Luckily for me, the delay was shortened and I got my Katie Gram. Now I'm just a few hours away from giving Katie the green light to ship my K3/100, KAT3, and KFL3-18 filter. I could add one more filter probably, maybe a narrow one for CW? I should, shouldn't I? Oh this is going to be fun. -jeff W7BRS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. I'm very interested in what happens when the K3's ATU is added to my station. My current station uses two tuners for one radio and one amplifier. Non K3 rig - 300W tuner - SB-200 - 1.5kW tuner - Antenna The rig get's as close to 50ohm as I can manage on the little tuner. The amp get's as close to 50ohm as I can manage on the big tuner. (By 50ohm I mean as low an SWR as I can manage to get.. 1.1 - 1.3 typical) It's a pain but it let's me optimize the antenna system to the point where when I'm tuned, I get as good as I'm gonna get. I can get 1300PEP W on 20m with the big tuner's Watt meter using 95W drive on the rig. Now when my K3 arrives, it will have the ATU. I'm not going to use the wee 300W tuner for the K3. The K3 schematic will be K3 w/ATU - SB-200 - 1.5 kW - Antenna Everything is now and will be connected via coax. I will probably decide to use the little tuner in bypass to use it's Watt meter to see that the interface between the SB-200 and K3 w/ATU is revealing power output concordiant with the settings on the K3. My antenna for all HF bands is a single dipole raised 70ft up over ground outside. It's cut for 40m but is tunable for 20-80m in the aforementioned setup. This has been working out so far, so good. I've neer had an automatic tuner so I'm about to find out what happens when the ATU kicks in and tries to work out the match. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Filter question
I misunderstood the previous thread on matched filters. When I receive the KRX3 after assembling the K3, do I worry about the stock filters on the K3/100 and KRX3 being mis-matched? Does it matter? Nick and others, thanks for the replies and information. Sounds like I have some options, and I should be able to get things working reasonably well. See you all in the pileups. Writelog was perfect for this purpose but I no longer use it for different reasons. I settled with Recall Pro ( http://www.sagebrush.com/recpro.htm )which is not as flexible compared with Writelog but it does the job. The program can split the recording after each hour giving you, say, 48 files per entire contest. Mine is configured to auto name each file by inserting a contest name, the hour and minute. Eg. ww2007cw_1000.mp3 for recording segment beginning at 10:00GMT. Depending on MP3 compression level used, each file will be somewhere between 10Mb and 15Mb in size. Since the time stamps are recorded you can later open a selected MP3 file and search for a specific point in time (in seconds) by moving the playback slider to desired position. Writelog was unbeatable for this feature. You could just browse through your log, right-click on the given QSO and select 'play this qso'. I wish other contest logging programs could do that. 73, Nick ve3ey - Original Message From: Jeff Kinzli N6GQ [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, August 15, 2008 11:51:48 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 and recording SSB Thanks guys...I have Audacity, and that's what I was thinking of using unless someone had a better idea. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] AFX operation
John, that sounds like what I have experienced with AFX:BIN. Perhaps we need to use the stereo output on the rear of the K3 for the real effect. AFX:DELAY5, on the other hand, does seem to lay out signals in a virtualized manner, spatially separated in front of the listener. In my experience, however, this effect takes time to materialze, for me, it was a number of hours in the seat before it happened. Don't get me wrong, AFX:DELAY5 is very comfortable to listen to, but the virtual spatialization seemed to take a while to happen (for me, anyway). I wonder what other people experience in terms of time before they notice the spatial separation? [Elecraft] K3 - Using KRX3 split (question on VFOs)
Question for those users/designers of the K3 sub receiver and split capabilities: Refering to manual version C1.November 18, 2007, page 35: The discussion about using split mode with the sub is confusing. Let me explain what I think the manual is saying and if it's incorrect let me know: In split I receive with the main receiver on VFO A, and transmit on VFO B. When the sub is on, I can receive on VFO_sub. Does the sub have a VFO label during split? What is the label of this VFO_sub ? So in split, to review: I am listening on VFO_A, Transmitting on VFO_B and listening also on VFO_sub ? Is there a capability in the K3 to make the frequency for VFO_sub follow and be the same as whatever frequency is set on VFO_B and vice versa (VFO_B tracks and is set to whatever VFO_sub is set to). By follow, I define that as when I set VFO_sub, the VFO_B is set to be the same. And by vice versa, I define that as when I set VFO_B, the VFO_sub is set to be the same. The problem I see (or made up) is that I see the benefit of having VFO_sub to listen to the pile up in split, but without a coupling of VFO_sub and VFO_B then it would require setting both the Tx VFO_B and VFO_sub. The use case scenario: Go split Turn on sub Set VFO_A to a frequency of the DX transmitter Set VFO_sub to a frequency of VFO_A (for reference) Listening to the DX, you learn the approximate frequency to Transmit on. Set VFO_B to that frequency Set VFO_sub to VFO_B frequency (manually?) Now as I listen to the DX on VFO_A for adjustments to his listening frequency, I adjust VFO_sub .. When I find the frequency DX is listening on, I'm ready to transmit but then I'll have to re-adjust VFO_B to match the frequency I want to transmit on based on my scan of VFO_sub.. What am I missing here? Are VFO_B and VFO_sub coupled in any way? If they're not coupled in firmware for their frequency assignment, then I can see (or made up) a problem of having to track the best frequency to set VFO_B and setting VFO_sub. I'll be setting one to listen where to make my transmission and it would be great if the VFO_B was ready. The way I read this manual, it sounds like I have the benefit of listening to VFO_B prior to transmitting via listening to VFO_sub, however the macination of setting VFO_sub to find the right frequency is half the work: I also have to re-set VFO_B before I transmit. -jeff K3 and goodies ordered January. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 - APP and the network effect
One fax machine is worthless. Two, still pretty much worthless; except you can fax the other guy you too huh? 10, getting warmer 100, hotter etc.. Billions of fax machines -- now they are very valuable appliances. APP's are more popular the more that are used. Elecraft made an _engineering_ decision to use them, but it also probably came with some analysis of what would make sense in the 'network effect' scenario. Who cares. Solder it, crimp it; just build the sucker. K3s won't revolutionize the power to the rig scenario, they are just going with the flow, as will I. As long as Miller don't try capping my beer bottles with a spin-off APP device, everything is going to be A-OK. -jeff DE NT7R My K3 number? Re: [Elecraft] OT: foot switch - why?
IMHO, the real reason for a foot switch is timing. When running high rates in a phone contest, you can't set the VOX delay and hang time well enough to drop the PTT soon enough without chopping up in the middle of speaking (or yelling, as it were). With a foot switch, I can key, do the exchange, and drop the PTT exactly as fast as I need to without relay switching, cut outs, etc.. If I tried to do it via VOX, the hangtime at the end would be wasting time as well, not to mention making copy more difficult on the other end, and shortening the life of amplifier relays, etc.. I think this is the case regardless of VOX implementation, the K3 has nice VOX and all, but I still much prefer a foot switch for SSB contesting. For casual SSB ragchewing, VOX is just fine though. -Jeff N6GQ On Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 4:52 PM, Jim Cox [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If the vox is set properly you dont have the problem of noises keying it. [Elecraft] K3 first impressions from ARRL DX SSB (long)
in the towel early, or didn't get on at all, reducing the pileups and the number of potential QSOs significantly. I ended up with 4362 QSOs by 247 mults for a final score of 3.2M. Not too bad, but again, much lower than I had hoped. Since I did a single-op all-band effort, sleep was a commodity and I didn't get much, and I'm still catching up :) On the plus side, the KH6LC station is amazing and really stomps, and a big thanks go to Lloyd for allowing me the use of his killer station. I hope this is useful to some, I'd love to talk to others that have experienced the spatial characteristic of the AFX mode, or hear Elecraft's input on how that was done. 73, Jeff N6GQ, op @ KH6LC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Most people have found AFX to be positive. Many contesters leave it on all the time and miss it when they put one radio in each ear with SO2R. However, there is a range of preferences for which setting is best, i.e., pseudo-stereo delay 1-5 or binaural. As I recall, the majority of people settle on one of the pseudo-stereo delay 3, 4 or 5. Also, the reported effect is very different across users. One person reports dizziness and can't use it. Others report a specific 3-D spatial relationship between signal in the pass band. Still others can't describe what it is like, but are outspoken that it is better for picking signals out of noise. I think your experience and description falls right into the range of experiences the rest of us are having, but for each it is unique. Pfew! As I was describing that to some of the other hams on the island, I started to think that I must sound like the sleep deprivation must be taking a toll on my sanity, but I'm glad to hear that it's somewhat normal. [Elecraft] FT1000-like VFO behavior on the K3
On the FT1000, you can have VFO A in your left ear, and VFO B in your right ear, and vary the amplitude, or weight, of both with a knob (they call it RF Mix). This is very nice for operating split on 40M, for example, as a DX station, transmitting around 7075 and listening in the US phone band, as well as on the TX frequency. You can hear both frequencies at the same time, and have, for example, your TX frequency louder than your receive frequency. I believe the K3 second receiver is required to hear both VFOs at the same time, but is that variable amplitude between VFOs possible with the K3? [Elecraft] K3 SSB filters
I've been reading the FAQ and the list archives trying to find out what SSB filters I could benefit from in my K3, which is due to come any day now! :) I've read some references that seem to suggest the 1.0 filter for SSB might be a bit on the narrow side. I'm a 95% cw op, so I got the 500 and 250 filters for CW, but I'll be taking the K3 to KH6 for the ARRL DX SSB contest, and since I'm not much of a phone op, I'm looking for feedback from other SSB contesters on what filters they've had success with in the K3. I don't yet have the K3 so I'm not able to try the stock filter myself to make that judgement... My original plan was to just use the 2.7 stock filter, but now that I'm thinking about it, I'm wondering if I should get the 2.1 also? Not sure if there's enough difference to warrant that, or if it makes a good deal of difference. How suitable is the 2.7 filter for ssb contesting? Suggestions? Re: [Elecraft] k3 operators on SS
If you did hear me I would be interested in any reports. Early in the contest I was told that my audio was weak and one of our club told me to crank up the compression. By the end I had the compression cranked all the way up and a lot of high-range gain (FP.H setting) dialed in. Re: [Elecraft] K3 selectivity display?
hi Barry - Look at the owners manual for the Display page (in my copy here rev B1 it is on page 12). On the lower right of the display are 7 digits, which are used to display a multitude of things, normally the VFO B setting - but also the CW decode and parameter changes. Just sitting there the K3 does not display the BW, but if you turn the WIDTH knob this lower right display will show you the setting as it changes. This is also the case for the POWER setting and many other settings. When you stop turning the knob the display reverts back to VFO B (or CW or DATA decode if you have that enabled.) 73 - jeff wk6i Barry N1EU wrote: Is there any numeric indication of the K3 rx bandwidth on the display? Re: [Elecraft] K3 selectivity display?
hi Barry - just based on my limited contest operating, the trapezoid seems sufficient to remind me of where I am with BW and shift. Also, the XFIL display helps because you know what you have installed in each slot - for example if XFIL4 is 400Hz, I know when XFIL4 is lit that I am less than or equal to 400, and the trapezoid gives relative BW size from there. Hope I am making sense, it would be much easier to just show you! - jeff wk6i Barry N1EU wrote: Thanks for all the clarification. It's good that bandwidth is displayed at adjustment time, but it would be great if there were some way (eventually?) to display it full time. Seems like in cw/ssb contesting and dx'ing, it's a parameter I want to be intimately aware of. I realize the work-around will be to adjust it in order to read it. -- Jeff Stai [EMAIL PROTECTED] Twisted Oak Winery http://www.twistedoak.com/ Winery Blog http://www.elbloggotorcido.com/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 selectivity display?
hi Craig - three things: 1. The manual advises you to order the filters from widest in XFIL 1 and go narrower from there. I think this is good advise, to keep it easy to remember where they are. You can order them any way you want, this is just a recommendation. 2. I don't think you will move filters very often. It is a lot of screws to remove since both the bottom and top covers have to come off. I think 95% of the time you are just adding a new one into an empty slot. 3. I understood that additional filters are planned, including variable filters, which would further complicate the display if not using the XFIL notation. hope this helps! - jeff wk6i Craig D. Smith wrote: Also, the XFIL display helps because you know what you have installed in each slot - for example if XFIL4 is 400Hz, I know when XFIL4 is lit that I am less than or equal to 400, I'm still a couple months away from my K3, but this kind of jumped out at me when I read the K3 manual. Why should I need to remember what roofing filter I installed in each slot? Besides, the filters might be swapped from time to time. My personal preference would be to see the nominal roofing filter bandwidth displayed rather than the FL number. To me this would be much more convenient. Is it just me, or am a missing something? Would be interesting to hear from Eric/Wayne on this design decision as well as the preference of other users. 73 ... Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW set up
I set up my K3 for RTTY and CW especially with the 8poles and 400 and 250. It depends what you want for CW - do you want to isolate signals or is a wider passband your normal procedure? I can tell you that the DSP does a very nice job narrowing the BW to isolate signals down to 100 or even 50 Hz (nice for isolating the response of a weak VO1 from the QRM of calling stations, for example.) But when you cross from 450 to 400 or 300 to 250 and the narrower roofing filter kicks in it is like a brick wall slams down. You really can hear the difference. Reducing interference from close stations is imperative in RTTY, I'm looking forward to trying it out in the next RTTY contest. I've also ordered the 1.8KHz filter for phone contests - especially SS phone! I have the 1.8KHz roofer for the FT1000D, it'll be interesting to compare them. hope this helps - jeff wk6i -- Jeff Stai [EMAIL PROTECTED] Twisted Oak Winery http://www.twistedoak.com/ Winery Blog http://www.elbloggotorcido.com/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] k3 observed in SS
K3 #27 was also in the SS CW to the tune of 546 QSOs. I'll post more later, but very briefly: I am totally blown away by the K3. There was a point where I had to separate one signal from another maybe 200Hz or 300Hz away, and call and work him. And I just turned a knob and the other signal went away*. And I worked the desired station like it was almost nothing. Damn. I have never operated a radio that was so easy to tune and isolate a signal. You just center it, and crank down the width, and there it is. Damn. - jeff wk6i *OK, there were some clicks - but they didn't matter! Yes - updating the firmware would be recommended. Several of us early recipients did get an email to that effect right after we got our K3s. Like most companies, I suspect Elecraft will not release new firmware to manufacturing very often, just doing so when it is called for. So, check for an update after you get yours working. [Elecraft] K3 - very brief first impressions...
Trying to grab a moment to post some first impressions - here goes: - The kit arrived in perfect condition with a complete inventory, no missing parts! Doing the inventory took me about 90 minutes, but I've done a few Elecraft inventories before... - I didn't keep good notes on time, but after inventory it took about 5 hours to assemble the basic K3/10 at a non-hurried rate, and about half an hour to do the alignment and final checks. - On a windows machine firmware download is easy and quick. You install the downloader and it knows how to find the server and check versions. The downloader includes a port test to make sure your serial port is speaking with the K3. Worked perfectly on COM6 (which is more than you can say about a lot of programs...) - There were a couple places where the assembly was a little tight and weird. I will say that if you are forcing it, you may be doing it wrong - and if something won't go where it is supposed to, try other angles until it does. Taking a step back helps too. - If you have built a K2, you can do this. The mechanical assembly is similar enough. - The part of the assembly process that is most like the K2 is installing the KPA3 100 watt amp - specifically the early K2... For the K3, you assemble and test it as a 10W radio before you install the KPA3. Then you disassemble half the rig to put in the KPA3: top and bottom covers, the KNB3, and so forth. Parts everywhere and a pile of screws! You end up making a lot of changes to the back of the radio. Needless to say, I also found this part to be the most fun! (OK, the Front Panel was also a lot of fun to piece together :) - Be sure to run a complete set of TX Gain calibrations on each band at both 5W and 50W, or it won't let you transmit! Operating: - I took advantage of the CQWW phone this weekend and operated phone only to start. This week is CW if I can stop working long enough. I'll do RTTY once my connector order comes in and I can hook up FSK. - The K3 swims in a space formerly occupied by an FT1000D! - During the CQWW I wanted to practice tuning in difficult and closely spaced phone signals. Good news: the K3 can do that! I found by just fiddling with the Width and Shift I could pull out a weak signal hidden by an adjacent strong signal a few 100HZ away. Many voices were readable down to a 1.2KHz width! And the auto notch works like a charm. - The Monitor works well, and once you read the instructions the Mic Gain and Comp are easy to set. My hearing has a little trouble figuring out how much Comp is too much, however... - All my stuff is set up for Yaesu but I had a spare cable for the Goldline which I converted to the Elecraft pinout by moving two wires. (I like using the boom mic because it forces me to sit up straight...) Works like a champ. - Also got it working with the ACOM2000A - the power control makes it easy to nail the 15W necessary to tune the amp the first time. - Made a few dozen contacts in the CQWW just for fun. Busting pileups no problem. A cool treat: I received tonight a video file from V73RY of him working me! I think he just did some video of some contacts and decided to share them with the stations he worked - but now I know what the K3 sounds like in Tonga. That's all for tonight - any questions, fire away! 73 - jeff wk6i -- Jeff Stai [EMAIL PROTECTED] Twisted Oak Winery http://www.twistedoak.com/ Winery Blog http://www.elbloggotorcido.com/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I think the Proset will need bias (does it?) and the HM10 not - I haven't figured out from the op manual whether the bias is settable on a per connection basis yet? Yes - you can set bias and gain *range* from the main menu separately for the front and back mic inputs. You do have to set which one is active, and you do have to set the gain level from the knob on the front panel *I think*. It wasn't a concern of mine so I don't know if they save the value when you switch between front and rear connector. Re: [Elecraft] 5.6 Earthquake very close to San Jose
Yes, it was felt here in Santa Cruz pretty good (which is about 5 miles from Elecraft HQ). No damage though, all is well AFAIK. [Elecraft] K3 #27
I wish to report that K3/100 #27 arrived at WK6I today with a perfect inventory. Assembly about half complete with no major gotchas or surprises (that I know of :). About 4.5 hours to this point, including 1.5 hours for inventory. This thing is a work of art. You take the pieces out of their anti-static bags and just enjoy looking at them. Especially the front panel board! It may not be quite as much fun as winding your own toroids, but watching it take shape on your bench is a real treat. Hope to have it on the air sometime Saturday - 73! - jeff wk6i -- Jeff Stai [EMAIL PROTECTED] Twisted Oak Winery http://www.twistedoak.com/ Winery Blog http://www.elbloggotorcido.com/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Wine Update Software
You can't even believe how hard for me it is to NOT comment on a subject that has wine in it! On 7/25, Wayne said: It's possible that we'll rewrite the K3 Downloader software application in VB6, etc., so that .NET won't be needed. The only reason we use .NET now is that I'm a C programmer, and the quickest way for me to get the downloader working was to use Microsoft's C# programming environment. In fact I hope to turn the downloader project in its entirety over to someone else ;) Want to write some VB6 code? I am 100% certain alternative loaders will be written and supported for all sorts of platforms. 73!
