Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 beta 2.04

2021-10-06 Thread Mike Flowers
Hi Andy,

Tried the new version of the Utility. 'Invalid handle' error when 'Copy
New Files from Elecraft' is clicked.

Unzipped the new beta firmware into my beta directory, and when I tried
loading the beta firmware I got 'Cannot start a busy state machine' error.

I'll stick with v 01.75 for now ...

[Elecraft] KAT500 beta 2.04

2021-10-06 Thread Andy Durbin
https://elecraft.com/pages/kat500-fully-automatic-tuner-firmware-and-utility

New KAT500 firmware and also a new Utility version. Quite a few issues fixed
that are not mentioned in the release notes.

I'd like to thank Dick, K6KR, for his patience as we worked though my defect
reports and enhancement suggestions. I learned a lot from our discussions as
this firmware update slowly matured.

All of my alpha testing was with a Kenwood TS-590S. Hopefully owners of other
rigs will try this beta and report any issues.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - does it earth antenna connections

2021-10-01 Thread Andy Durbin
"You don't need to manually choose an antenna on startup. It remembers what
was last used on each band (assuming you are using an Elecraft or Kenwood
rig with it). I think it will still remember the last used even in a dumb
situation without knowledge from the radio; it just needs the radio support
to have "per-band" memory."

No radio support is needed for antenna per-band memory. All the KAT500 needs
to know is the TX frequency. It then decides which antenna to select based on
"band" and the antenna preferences defined by the KAT500 PC Utility.

A weakness of this design is that, if only RF sensing is used for frequency
determination, the KAT500 may fault due to a mismatched load before the
appropriate antenna has been selected for the new band.

Antenna selection can be performed by serial command but, even though my
controller is capable of that, I have seen no reason to replicate the antenna
selection logic already built into the KAT500. There is a caveat though -
the internal antenna selection logic doesn't work correctly when KAT500 is in
BYP mode. (The workaround for that defect is to never use BYP mode. MAN mode
with Byp active is electrically the same and antenna selection does work
correctly in that configuration).

[Elecraft] KAT500 - does it earth antenna connections

2021-10-01 Thread Bob McGraw
I would suggest a dummy load be connected to antenna port #1 and your
antennas to #2 and #3.   As to grounding, I suggest one review the ARRL
book "Grounding and Bonding for the amateur station".

I've seen many ham stations that ground ground ground and still have
issues, in some cases they attribute to a dangerous condition,
regarding lightning protection and RF grounding. There is a LOT of
incorrect and incomplete information passed around with regard to
grounding.  It is mostly originated as  "old ham lore" with no
scientific basis found or applied.

And yes, the KAT500 has 3 antenna ports and port #1 is the default
selected when power is not applied.

Interesting idea.
I have two antennas, so I could connect my ground to #1 and antennas to #2
and #3?
Just manually choose an antenna on start-up. Hm-m-m-m-m.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - does it earth antenna connections

2021-09-30 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
This is not quite correct. It does not connect unused antenna ports to ground.
It does have a GDT and 1 meg resistor to ground on each port, however.
When power is off to the KAT500, ANT1 is connected directly to the input port.

But you are correct in that it has three output antenna ports.

2021-09-30 Thread Greg Mitchell
You don't need to manually choose an antenna on startup. It remembers what
was last used on each band (assuming you are using an Elecraft or Kenwood
rig with it). I think it will still remember the last used even in a dumb
situation without knowledge from the radio; it just needs the radio support
to have "per-band" memory. I could be wrong. I know it remembers fine with
my K3.

2021-09-30 Thread Ted Edwards W3TB
Interesting idea.
I have two antennas, so I could connect my ground to #1 and antennas to #2
and #3?
Just manually choose an antenna on start-up. Hm-m-m-m-m.

It has 3 antenna connections, not 4. It grounds the unused ones and selects
antenna 1 on power-off. I put my dummy-load on antenna 1 so my station is
disconnected from the antennas when powered down.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 with IC-7610?

2021-08-01 Thread Ken Winterling
I have had the IC-7610 and the KPA500/KAT500 for over three years and it
works very well when I switch bands with the intention of transmitting. My
"nit" to pick is that the KAT500, as has been said, can not be preset by
the IC-7610 in receive. It can preset the KPA500, for all bands but WARC,
by using a DIY "band data" voltage cable (Icom doesn't support band data
voltages for the WARC bands).

If I want to *listen* to different frequencies on the IC-7610 that are on
different antennas connected to the KAT500 I have to manually select the
antenna on the KAT500. This makes scanning frequencies on the IC-7610
impossible.

The KPA1500, that combines an amp and antenna matcher (aka tuner), can read
Icom CI-V data and preset both the amp and the "tuner". This feature should
have been/should be available for the KPA500 and KAT500. I believe the
KPA500 and KAT500 can read data from Kenwood and Yaesu transceivers. Why
was Icom left out of the mix?

Yes, I believe you're right, Andy. At least the CI-V is capable of
including frequency data - but KAT doesn't read it.

The KPA does read band data, presumably from voltage.

KPA500 only needs to know the band but KAT500 needs to know the actual

To implement the interface properly you'd have to know the exact TX

May work for you but are you using KAT500 antenna port selection? My issues
with RF detection as the primary tuning mechanism include the fact that the
KAT500 will fault before it has time to select the correct antenna for the band
in use.

I need the KAT500 and KPA500 to be configured before I transmit. I suspect
that anyone who uses KAT500 antenna port selection would too.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 with IC-7610?

2021-08-01 Thread Lyn Norstad
I'll chime in too, echoing what Ken says. All you need is the "tune" cable
to connect the KAT500 to the rig for control of the Tune function. I also
use the LDG cable (just because it's easy ...) but you can easily make your
own. (I am not familiar with the Ten-a-Tuner mentioned by Buck ... perhaps
it is the same?)

I prefer to use the Elecraft Utilities for both KPA and KAT500 for all
tuning and setup settings, but the Tune button on the rig (or tuner) works
fine as well (it automatically supplies the proper power for tuning).

Generally, for digital operation I set the rig to about 18% power. For SSB,
up to 25%. All the rig settings are automatically stored with each saved
config file.

The only downside to using Icom gear with the KPA/KAT500 is that Elecraft
does not "read" the frequency "voltage" indicator and therefore does not
preset the tuner to the correct values without transmitting. That
ultimately is not a big deal, but does produce a 2 or 3 second delay for
tuning when first transmitting after a band or significant frequency change.
I generally hit the utility's Tune button as soon as I change so the
receiver sees a good match.

Chuck,

I, too, have been using an IC-7610 with the KAT500/KPA500 combination for
several years. My IC-7610 TUNER jack is connected to the TUNE jack on the
rear of the KAT500 via a LDG Electronics IC-PAC-6 cable. While the TUNE
button on the IC-7610 or the TUNE button on the KAT500 activates the
IC-7610 10W tune function and causes the KAT500 to tune, the Elecraft
KAT500 manual stated "If a tune cycle is performed, 20 watts or more will
produce more accurate tuning".

My procedure is to switch to RTTY mode on the IC-7610 and key the rig. The
KAT500 matches the load and I return the rig to the previous mode. This
literally takes only a few seconds. Yes, the TUNE button works but I have
found that sometimes my method produces a better match. Be sure to follow
the KAT500 "training" procedure to store your various bands and frequencies
in the tuner so they can be quickly recalled.

As has been mentioned, you have to manually adjust your output as you
switch between the amp and full power. I have a Brother P-Touch label on
the amp to remind me about max power input.

As for obtaining a tuner cable, you can get one from LDG, and other
vendors. The IC-PAC-6 cable is 6' long while the IC-PAC cable is 14" long.

[Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 with IC-7610?

2021-07-30 Thread Chuck Chandler
I'm currently running the K3S with the KAT500/KPA500 combo. It works
great.

I'm starting to look at what my next rig might be, and have tentatively
narrowed it down to the K4 and IC-7610. I know the K4 will integrate with
the KAT/KPA just as well as the K3 does.

How about the IC-7610? Are there significant drawbacks in the
integration? How well does the iCom handle things like training the KAT
for a new antenna via the rig TUNE button, or changing power levels
between barefoot and QRO, for example? Are power settings per band
supported?

Any advice appreciated!

[Elecraft] KAT500 remote control questions.

2021-07-19 Thread Gordon LaPoint
I'm using the KAT500 remote software to control the tuner remotely. The
only issue I have is it will not stay in "Manual" mode and switches to
"Auto" when the software starts up on the remote.  It looks like it
switches to Auto at other times also, not sure about that yet.

Is there any way to cause the KAT500 Remote software, in host mode, to
start in "Manual" mode?

I have the software start when the computer boots, along with RCForb
server and RemAud.

The radio is a Kenwood TS-590sg, but that should not matter.  I have
tried it with a K3, no difference.

Thanks,

Gordon - N1MGO

Amphenol has been a leader in quality connectors for RF.   Cannon and

Also, when soldering the center pin on a PL-259, do NOT let solder build
up on the outside of the male pin.  It will expand the center contact
when inserted into the SO-239 and problems will abound.

"So if the Asian manufacturer considers 4 mm easier and close enough the pin

Isn't 4. mm = 0.1575 inch? If so, 4 mm is within the quoted WWII spec size
range. The problem would not be specifying 4 mm but the tolerance that was
placed on that measurement.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 ANT1 problem

2021-07-12 Thread Dave
I am using the Times Microwave connectors on Times Microwave LMR-400 for my HF
antennas. Except a Belsen 8267 jumper around the rotor to Yagi. The Times
Mocrowave connectors for RG8, 214, 214, 9913, and LMR400. I had the LMR400 left
over from a job so no cost except the UJF male and one UHF female connectors.
The PolyPhasers are type N female. As long as the coax is not swinging in the
wind or run around a rotor then the LMR400 is fine.

Hardline for my cable runs on HF would be overkill as far as loss since runs
are under 100 feet for each of three antennas.

Amphenol is the “gold standard” for RG8/213 installations.

5/32” inches is 0.156” which is 3.968 mm. So if the Asian manufacturer
considers 4 mm easier and close enough the pin will be oversize.WW II
drawings give the pin diameter as max/min 0.158/0.154 . 5/32 is right in the
middle of this range. I don’t have the MILSPEC documentation but guess this is
likely the dimension. Whether that is enough to create problems, I don’t know.

But I also saw a drawing where the pin diameter was specified as large as 4.01
mm.

Buying only from manufacturers with a known track record of QA and following
MIL Specs seems to be wise.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 ANT1 problem

2021-07-11 Thread Andy Durbin
"The secondary toroid of the directional coupler has a direct path to ground.
That means there is no straight-through DC path."

I may have misunderstood the schematics. What I see is a DC path between J1
input and "ATU". If K20, K21 and K18 are all in the NC state there will be a
low impedance DC path between "ATU" and ANT-1. If any of these relays is
faulty and not closed the DC path will be open. Sure, there is a DC path
between J1 and ground through the coupler but I don't see how that changes the
path to ANT-1.

If ANT-1 is open circuit to XMTR isn't it likely that K18, K21, or K20 is
faulty?

I realize this is now just a mental challenge as the OP's problem has already
been solved.

Andy, my friend, you are forgetting something. The secondary toroid of the
directional coupler has a direct path to ground. That means there is no
straight-through DC path.

Rare that I catch Andy on something…

[Elecraft] KAT500 ANT1 problem

2021-07-11 Thread Andy Durbin
KAT500 antenna selection drops to ANT-1 when there is no power on KAT500.
Also, with no power on KAT500, the Bypass relay defaults to bypass state.
There should be a simple DC path between input RF connector and ANT-1 RF
connector if the KAT500 is not powered.

Pull the DC input plug and the coax connectors and measure DC resistance
between XMTR and ANT-1. No fancy PIN diode switching in KAT500, it's all
relays.

All,

This is likely something very straight forward, but I do not have a
schematic to follow and troubleshoot.

Symptom: ANT 1 circuit seems to be dead. No match and fault on switch
from

ANT2 to ANT1. No receive signal.

Tests:

Took KAT500 out of line to by-pass tuner, antenna on ANT1 is OK and will
match normally with rig's internal ATU.

With KAT500 back in line, selected each tuning position (AUTO, MAN,
BYP) no

difference

With KAT500 still in line, ANT2 and ANT3 work nominally.

Checks:

Reset to factory defaults, restored last working Configuration, no
change in

above behavior.

If I was a betting guy, I'd guess a relay or switching diode was open,
however - no schematic, don't really know.

Did I miss something

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 ANT1 problem

2021-07-11 Thread kd4iz
Many thanks to Ken (K6MR), Joe (4X1RV), and Kirk (K6KAR) for your quick
answers and for providing the schematic information.
I pulled the unit and did some poke and prod testing with a DVM here on the
anti-static mat. My fear was that K18 had a bad contact in the ANT1
position. -Not!-
What had apparently happened was that I had a batch of the offshore made
"Amazon Special" PL-259s that appear to have a slightly oversize center pin.
The patch cable used until recently had one of them on one end. It had
spread the leaves on the ANT1 SO259 just enough that a good connector, when
perfectly centered and seated, did not make contact! Gentle recentering of
the leaves with a miniature flat blade screw drive yielded relief and a
self-administered head smack.

All,

This is likely something very straight forward, but I do not have a
schematic to follow and troubleshoot.

Symptom: ANT 1 circuit seems to be dead. No match and fault on switch from
ANT2 to ANT1. No receive signal.

Tests:

Took KAT500 out of line to by-pass tuner, antenna on ANT1 is OK and will
match normally with rig's internal ATU.

With KAT500 back in line, selected each tuning position (AUTO, MAN, BYP) no
difference

With KAT500 still in line, ANT2 and ANT3 work nominally.

Checks:

Reset to factory defaults, restored last working Configuration, no change in
above behavior.

If I was a betting guy, I'd guess a relay or switching diode was open,
however - no schematic, don't really know.

Did I miss something

Does this little beastie need to go back to the mothership?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 80 meter anomaly

2021-07-09 Thread Andy Durbin
All the frequencies lie in the same bin and there will be some, perhaps a lot
of, variation in match as the frequency changes. I would first run an autotune
at the mid point of all the frequencies. I would then use MAN mode to prevent
auto tune on frequency change within the same bin.

Autotune can come up with some really bad matches particularly if the
transmitter folds back during the tune attempt. KAT firmware can see reflected
power as zero with low forward power even if the match is horrible (coupler is
low sensitivity) and this makes it believe it has found a good match.

2021-07-09 Thread Lyn Norstad
Andy -

I had a response from Dick D, and he suggested disabling Recall Tune on QSY
in both MAN and AUTO modes. I did so, and the problem stopped ... for a day
or two ... but comes back if I operate in MAN mode very long (I normally
leave it in AUTO). I am using Counter for frequency info (ICOM). I believe
MTM0 and MTA0 would do the same.

I have experimented with various FCCS settings in the past - including 5
- and will revisit that. Basically, the KAT does not exhibit the stability
it had when new (2 years ago). And I seem to need to go thru this whole
process about every 6 months or so. My first step is always to check the
antenna system, but that has not revealed any issues.

Perhaps aging components are at fault. If there was a test for same, that
would be helpful. But the issues are not critical enough for me to send it
in for service since it is out of warranty, and who needs to clog up the
Mother Ship at this time?

How are you telling your KAT500 what frequency to use. CAT, Counter, or
both?

Is you KAT500 in MAN or AUTO mode?

If you are commanding frequency with CAT then FCCS 5; will make the
KAT500 ignore counter frequency for up to 50 seconds and stop any toggling
between CAT and counter frequencies.

Commands MTM0; and MTA0; ought to help but, according to my test notes, they

Subject: [Elecraft] KAT500 80 meter anomaly

On 80 meters, the KAT500 stores frequencies in memory every 10 kHz. Because
of bandwidth issues, normally that's a good thing. Except when it isn't.

Many digital modes that use prescribed frequencies are clustered in a fairly
narrow region. For example ("dial frequency" in kHz):

FT8 = 3573.000

FT4 = 3575.000

Winlink 80m Gateway 1 = 3586.000

Winlink 80m Gateway 2 = 3595.000

If you only operate FT8 and FT4, there is no issue. Likewise, if you only
operate Winlink in that region, no problem. But if you operate both, the
KAT500 can't seem to recall the exact settings for any of those frequencies
consistently.

Here's an experiment for you to try, if you're interested:

1)Clear the frequency memory for 80 meters on whatever antenna you use
(KAT500 configuration>Erase Antenna Tuner Memories).

2)Using the same utility, "Memorize" a setting for each of the four
above frequencies.

3)Conduct a Winlink VARA HF session at both 3586 and 3595 kHz (if you
can't connect to any stations, that's OK too).

4)Then using WSJT-X software, do a brief session using FT8 and then FT4.

So far, so good. Everything works great.

But now go back to the Winlink software are try to check for mail using the
same frequencies, 3586 and 3595 (it would be nice to connect this time). If
your system works like mine, on every other transmission it will hunt for a
new match (even if it's already 1:1). In my case, the "normal" L/C values
are:

@ 3573 = 0 / 6500

@ 3575 = 0 / 6500

@ 3586 = 180 / 6500

@ 3595 = 180 / 6500

When the KAT500 goes a little bit crazy with its "every other time hunt" on
the Winlink frequencies (3586 and 3595) it will jump to some extremely high
SWR value (in the 80s or 90s) and then eventually settle back with an L/C of
. say . 0 / 5400 (creating settings for 3592 kHz). Meanwhile, the Gateway
station has very likely lost at least half of your transmission. This
behavior is independent of Automatic or Manual settings, exciter power
settings, KPA500 On or Off (but OFF is better for testing, for obvious
reasons).

Is there a Command that would help to alleviate this behavior? Or a way to
tell the KAT500 to ignore one or more of its preset frequencies that are
causing issues?

There is no reason this should be "last resort". Save the current

If default config does not exhibit the problem then you should send the problem

I changed the configuration accordingly and no joy. I had everything set
up properly in the configuration selection - enabled all the antenna

it does change on the 'operate' menu briefly, but then reverts back to

I have had a similar problem and in my case I was not looking at the right spot
for adjusting the antennas.

There are two different spots when using the KAT500 utility. The Operate menu
selection and then also the Configuration\Antennas selection.

In my case, the Operate page would not let me change the antenna (nor the
KAT500) because the configuration of antennas was not set up properly. I have
no idea how those got changed since they had been OK before but I reconfigured
the antenna selection options and saved the configuration and everything worked
correctly after that.

I cannot change the antenna selector via the front panel of the KAT500 or

cycle through the modes, but the antenna selector is stuck. All antenna
positions are checked (enabled) in the utility software and when I advance
to another position, the software moves the selection back to #2.

KAT500 mode is any mode - current mode is auto, but any mode change does
not make any difference in ability to change from the #2 antenna

haven't tried to erase all my settings and revert back to factory

"I cannot change the antenna selector via the front panel of the KAT500 or the

What was the KAT500 mode when you observed this problem? There is a known
firmware defect that may prevent enabled antennas being selected when mode is
BYP. The same problem does not exist if mode is MAN and state is Bypassed.
Until this is fixed the solution is to avoid mode BYP (Mode MAN and state
bypass is electrically identical).

Every Astron I've checked had a manufacturing defect that fails to bond
AC power line green wire to the chassis, thanks to paint under the lug
to which it was soldered. In addition, the V- terminal is soldered to
the same lug, connecting it to the green wire, but not to the chassis. I
suspect that when the switch broke, it put some voltage on V- and
failure to bond stuff properly in the shack coupled some voltage to the
KAT500.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Blinking "MAN" LED - Bad Astron P/S On/Off Switch

2021-05-03 Thread John W2XS
The other day I turned on my Astron RS-35M and then my K3, P3, KAT500, and
KPA500. I've done this at least once per day for the last several years.
This time, however, I heard arcing from the Astron's on/off switch. Then I
saw that the KAT500 LED was blinking constantly about 3 times per second.
After doing some troubleshooting, I replaced the power supply switch with
one I had here but the tuner's LED kept blinking and the unit would not
respond to any key press, including the power button. I tried connecting the
KAT500 to the computer but there was no connection to be made. Then the
blinking changed frequency and got faster. Eventually, I was able to connect
and reload the KAT500 firmware and everything has been OK since.
I do have the KAT500 connected directly to the power supply since I am
powering a P3 and a PR6-10 from the K3's aux power connection. I noticed
that, normally, all the LEDs in the KAT500 would blink momentarily as the
power supply was turned on even though I have the KAT500 set to power-on in
the "off" position. Then it would power up and work fine.
Anyway, sorry for the verbage, but my theory is that the bad on/off switch
in the Astron corrupted the firmware in the KAT500. I don't know what the
blinking "man" LED meant, and I don't know why there were 2 different
blinking speeds. I built a little switch box to keep the KAT500 power
disconnected while the power supply comes on and settles down so as not to
have another problem in the future.
(Marlin P Jones sells an in-line power on/off switch with a 2.1 mm barrel
plug on one end and a 2.1 mm barrel socket on the other end. I would have
used that except I cannot normally reach the back of the KAT500 in my
configuration).

[Elecraft] KAT500 Locked on Ant 1

2021-04-30 Thread Andy Durbin
It may not be related to your problem but there is a documented issue with
enabled antennas not being selectable in BPY mode. Elecraft is aware of this
issue. Because of this problem I never use BYP mode. I use BYP state in MAN
mode which is electrically equivalent.

Hi,
Thank you Dick K6KR, and Skip NC90 for your help. I ended up doing a
factory default, enabled the ant per band and all is well.
One question: After setting the configuration, saving, shutting down, and
powering up I found in checking "edit configuration" ant 1 and 3 were no
longer enabled. However, all worked as expected. Should the latest
configuration show the antennas enabled? Perhaps not?

Thank you again, saving me a ship to CA.

Very Best regards

One of your antennas might be disabled.

Check the KAT500 Utility, Configuration, Edit Configuration, Antennas tab.
Perhaps the "Enabled" checkbox is off for ANT2. This is a per-band setting.

If others are experiencing problems with their KAT500 I'd suggest providing as

Please share if possible. I'm having similar problems with my KAT500. Locks
up for no discernable reason, can't power down. Removing power for just a
few seconds and it's back to normal until the next random lockup.

In my case I'm feeding frequency info to the KAT500 from a RemoteQTH Band
decoder II. I'm running KAT500/KPA500 combo with an IC7610.

Lockups seem to be totally random but the behavior just started recently,
the setup has been in place for over a year

Thanks,
Jim/KK1W.

All the front panel LED seem to be on that same 5V rail and they stay normal
brightness in the fault condition. I suspect something, other than low
voltage is killing the MCU.

It's still working over 30 minutes after the fridge cold soak.

[Elecraft] KAT500 failure

2021-04-08 Thread Andy Durbin
My KAT500 has stopped communicating with my controller and does not power up
normally. With PC data cable removed, when I pull and replace the power plug
the KAT500 powers up with a relay clunk and with MAN and ANT 1 LED lit. All
front panel buttons are unresponsive. The same thing happened a few weeks ago
but it recovered after disconnecting and re-connecting power.

If I leave it disconnected for a while sometimes the KAT500 will power up and
allow the mode to be changed once or twice then it locks up again. I was once
able to connect to the Utility but normally Utility does not see the KAT500.
Most of the time KAT500 powers up showing MAN and ANT-1 and is completely
unresponsive.

I took a break from composing this email and powered it again. This time I was
able to cycle the mode and antenna several times before it locked up showing
MAN and ANT-3.

AZ is warming up and room temperature is nearly 29 deg C. I'm suspecting the
KAT500 has a thermal problem. Does anyone recognize these symptoms and know a
probable cause?

Thanks and 73,
Andy, k3wyc

[Elecraft] KAT500 Question - Manual Mode Light is Flashing

"When I have the Tuner in By-Pass Mode for an antenna with a low SWR, even when
making small changes in the frequency, the Tune switches to MAN (Manual Mode)

One reason for flashing MAN is that KAT500 has entered auto tune mode and is
waiting for sufficient power to start the solution search. I don't know if
this is the reason in your case. Do you have the ability to log the commands
your Flex is sending to KAT500? Is it possible your Flex commanded autotune
(FT;)?

I never run my KAT500 in BYP mode after I found defects in the antenna
selection logic when BYP mode is active. I always run in MAN mode and MAN mode
with bypass active is electrically identical to BYP mode as far as the tuning
solution is concerned.

When I have the Tuner in By-Pass Mode for an antenna with a low SWR, even
when making small changes in the frequency, the Tune switches to MAN
(Manual Mode) and the MAN light is flashing. How do I get it to stay in
By-Pass Mode.

This recently started and not sure what changed? A setting in the KAT500

Briefly, I have learned when you place a “WTB:” ad on QTH.com, you often
encounter one of the lurking scammers, who will offer to sell you the item you
are wanting. They will spoof an unsuspecting, legitimate ham, who does not
include an email address in their QRZ listing. There are several tell-tale
signs of such an operation, and such was the case yesterday with the offer to
sell me KAT500, SN 0296.

I wrote this group yesterday, hoping that perhaps the rightful owner would step

Anyway, thanks for bearing with me while I outed this scammer.

Sure. Just select bypass for the antenna on the front panel. When you QSY to
that band, the setting will take affect and the ATU will be in bypass mode.
I do this with my tribander, which does not need the ATU, just the switch.

2020-12-06 Thread Frank R. Oppedijk
Hi all,

A follow-up on my problem: today I’ve opened up the belly of the KAT500 and
have done some testing. With no USB cable connected and the KAT500 powered up,
the Q1 drain voltage is 2.39V, where I would expect 5V. Also the gate voltage
is 2.30V, where I would expect it to be floating. With the power off, I’ve
measure the drain-gate resistance. It’s 5.5 k ohms. Oops!

My conclusion must be that Q1 has failed. So now I’m about to learn how to SMD
components, hi hi.

Thanks for your help so far.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 lost serial comms - try factory defaults?

2020-12-04 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The KAT500 utility sends EEINIT;

SET format: EEINIT; erases EEPROM containing frequency memories, per-band
settings and all
configuration selections, including the current RS-232 speed. Configuration
and per-band settings are
formatted to default values during restart after a microcontroller reset.
EEINIT; does not change the
KAT500 serial number or its fault table.

RST0 and RST1 have to do with resetting (restarting) the microcontroller.

I don't know what the Utility sends for "Reset Configuration". The
documented reset command is:

RSTx (Reset, SET only)
SET format: RST0; or RST1;
RST0; resets the microcontroller without saving state in EEPROM. This is
equivalent to removing the power plug and plugging it back in again. RST1;
simulates pressing the power off button which saves current state in EEPROM
before reset.
RST may be ignored while transmitting.

Neither RST0; nor RST1; appear to clear the memorized settings so I suspect
the Utility uses another command. Now I may have to find out what that is

The utility commanded reset sequence appears to be:

;
l;
eeinit;

KAT500 replies with its identity.

"EEINIT (Clear configuration and frequency memories, SET only)
SET format: EEINIT; erases EEPROM containing frequency memories, per-band

Configuration and per-band settings are formatted to default values during

serial number or its fault table.
EEINIT; is ignored while the ATU is tuning or transmitting.
EEINIT is used by the KAT500 Utility Configuration page Reset to Factory
Defaults button."

I expect the KAT500 could be reset with a terminal emulator but that would
require KAT500 to be capable of receiving serial data input. It seems very
unlikely to me that a serial port issue would be fixed by the reset, unless
caused by an incorrect baud setting.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 lost serial comms - try factory defaults?

2020-12-04 Thread Rick Bates, NK7I

Frank,

I would start with a complete power removal (not just off) to the KAT500
and the computer (unplugged from power).  Then go have a cuppa.  When
you get back, plug the power in and restart it and test.

I have found that some devices (more in the USB realm) occasionally
'stick' when exposed to RF and that a long power removal is the only
cure.  If it's a frequent event, you have an RFI issue to deal with
(better grounding and bonding is the first place to start for that).

Hi all,

I’ve used my KAT500 with pleasure for many years, but recently a problem has
arisen: I’ve lost the serial communication feature. I’ve already swapped the
KXUSB cable with another one (home-brew) so I’m pretty sure it’s not the KXUSB
that’s gone kaput. And the PC is doing USB comms fine (e.g. the USB interfaces
to my K3), so I guess it’s not the PC or the USB port either.

I’m contemplating trying a KAT500 factory reset. But two questions arise:
1. Can I do a factory reset without having the serial comms working (so: can I
do a factory reset other than from within the KAT500 Utility)?
2. What antennas are enabled after a factory reset?

(Question 2 is because I have multiple antennas connected to the KAT500, and if
the factory defaults would be that only ANT1 would be enabled, I would lose
functionality until I’ve got the KAT500 repaired…)

Hope the collective wisdom of the group can help me out.
