My girlfriend calls me and tells me that her Outlook has lost several personal calendar items. This caused a double-booking of conference rooms and much pain and suffering. She is on a Mac with Outlook and I would imagine the servers are Win2K/Exchange 2K but I'm not certain. At any rate, she tells the helpdesk people that she is missing items among other things. They come look at it, shrug their shoulders and say they'll be back later. They never return. In fact, she calls them and they forgot all about her problem. (Others have this problem as well.) I don't know about you but if someone tells me something is missing from an email DB, I get right on it to figure out the issue (which is usually larger than just a few things missing). I told her that this is NOT acceptable IT protocol. I would like to think that a smooth network is one where workstations and servers are humming, no one has problems with the equipment or software, backups are working, and security is tight. Am I wrong here? Am I overreacting when I tell her that she needs to bring down the hammer on these so-called network professionals?? We back up our E2k servers with BE 8.5 from a different machine than the Exchange servers. We backed up our EX5.5 server the same way for several years before that using Veritas software w/o resorting to BLB. I would also question having the option checked to use OFO-shouldn't need it for just the stores (again, separate the job from your drive backups, where you can use OFO). There is plenty of disk space on the all 3 partitions. The server went from having about a 190 users on it to having 370 users. I thought that there would be more then enough CPU and Memory on this box to accommodate the additional users so that I could trouble shoot the other box but it doesn't appear so. Does this box sound like it should be able to accommodate this many users? Does it need more memory? Performance monitor shows much higher CPU usage for the STORE which is to be expected with increase in users but its not pegged all the time. Opinions? Bob F. 16 gig limit - how can I get it IS to start so I can remove messa ges
Title: Message Folks - One of my outer offices is running Exch 5.5 sp 4 STANDARD. I have requested the tech there to upgrade to Enterprise but that is another story. He is out today and I started getting calls from his users not being able to connect. I checked and sure enough he passed the 16 gig limit. I have never had to deal with this. How can I reduce the size of the IS without it being started? I have been searching technet but have not found anything yet. Any links greatly appreciated! Thanks. From a cmd prompt the proper syntax would be: eseutil /d priv.edb /is This must be run from the drive that the priv.edb is located and this drive should have a minimum of 16 GB free space or the defrag will not complete, you should really have about 110% of the size of the database in free space available for the defrag to run. The exchange services must be stopped in order for the defrag to run, and you can expect it to take a while to run. Once you get this completed and this server back online, you need to think about setting mailbox limits, running mailbox manager on a regular basis, until this office can upgrade to Enterprise. Hello again, Going to try to explain my question again, seeing that I haven't gotten any feedback yet. We are looking at setting up a hot site with servers, leased line, etc where a full backup location could be utilized in case of complete building loss. We are looking for a relatively reliable method to get our mail backups off-site nightly and we are discussing the possibilities of just send our transaction logs nightly to this remote site, along with 1 or 2 tapes with a full backup. If I needed to, could I restore the full backup, copy the logs for that week, restart the IS and once the logs are replayed, be back in business? Would this work? Any comments, articles, kb's or alternative options are highly appreciated. Thanks again, Mike Z -Original Message- From: Mike Zatkalik Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2002 5:15 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Doing test restore with transaction logs... Hello all, Trying to do some testing in regards to DR on Exchange 5.5 sp3 on NT4. We are looking into doing backups over the wire, and wondering if I send the transaction logs offsite, at the same location that has our full backup tape, can I do a restore using these logs? After reading through the 5.5 DR guide from MS, it sounds like you can replay the logs, actually sounds like you have to play them back, but what is the syntax of this command? All of the kb articles I see are dealing with recovering after transaction log drive is lost. Sorry for the newbie question, but realized that I don't know exactly how to do this. I have, numerous times before, completed a full restore to a separate server and recovered multiple mailboxes without any problems, but haven't tried to restore using the logs, for an up to the minute restore. Thanks in advance for information, or even kbs that could help in this matter. tia, Mike Zatkalik List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt- software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt- software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

Is it possible to delete messages out of all the thousands of mailboxes in the store based on subject? I know that you could do this with the ExMerge.exe utility, however it processes mailboxes too slowly to be practical, so I was wondering if there was a faster, quicker method. Thanks in advance... Title: Step Two Ed Crowley Server Move Method Exchange 5.5 sp5 on win 4.0 sp 6a (Both machines) In step two of my migrations I am hitting something I don't understand. Please forgive my ignorance if this is a simple thing. The text reads: 2. In the old server's Information Store properties, change the location of the mailboxes' Public Folder server to be the new server. This will take care of any newly created public folders. (You'll have to stop and restart the Exchange services before this will take effect.) I see on the bottom of the properties page the home server is set to the old server. How do I change that? In the Instances tab there is a EventConfig_NewServer setting that is already on the left. I have searched the Q and found several articles relating re-homing public folders but I am not positive that is what I need to do and want this box to be pristine from day one. FYI I don't have any public folders as yet on the old or new server. Any advice will be appreciated TIA Jim List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

Our ISP reports that everything is going thru the router (and nothing is being NAT'ed at this level). Our firewall people say port 80 requests are making it thru the firewall properly and that they are not being handled by E2K, and more than likely its an SMTP connector problem. Frankly, at this point I am stumped...I inherited this mess and don't even know how to proceed from here. Any thoughts? OWA Access from Different Server
Hello I am part of a WAN that has several bridgehead servers and about a hundred Exchange 5.5 sp4 servers. I am responsible for two of these servers that bothemail addresses on ourdomain. One of these servers has a direct internet connection so we are using it for OWA. Users who mailbox reside on that server have no problems at all accessing OWA. Users whose mailboxes are on the other server cannot access it at all. They get Unable to get inbox - I know it is not an alias issue as we use the full SMTP address. I thought it was trust but we have a reciprocal trust relationship and I can access all files on their domain and they can access all of mine. We also use wins replication that seems to be working fine (no error messages). I am thinking I need a connector between the two servers. In looking at the setups (that I inherited) we have site connectors to different bridgehead servers. Can anyone point me in the direction to go to learn how to set this up? Could not find anything on Microsoft or in the archives. Ordered a couple of books but would like to get a jump on this if possible.
