There is a message ID in the headers which is included in the In-Reply-

Oh! D'oh, now I get it.

Some mail clients thread by subject though, so they escape this.

If the subject of a thread drifts, it is proper, and even desired, to
change the subject to reflect what the discussion has become. This is so
mail filtering and scoring routines can properly deal with the messages.

Many posters, apparently in an effort to save themselves the time it
takes to post a new message, simply reply to any message, delete the
whole thing and change the subject.
I'm guilty of this. :-(

This is annoying, because my mail client threads by the message ID, so in
a thread about postifx mail headers, you get this (please excuse my ascii

Now that Christmas ads are in full force, I noticed there is no reason for

getting an upgrade to something. And that required more memory, more disk,
more cpu. With Linux, everything I could want I installed when I installed
the OS, or shortly thereafter. With windows I was always installing
something. Now, I don't install stuff often.

Maybe I do disagree just a little bit ;-), as in True, but. . . When I
have installed, for most products I could install through MCC. That's
easier than InstallShield. For most others I've needed, there was a
mandrake RPM. My point is, a pc-illiterate user (I don't think) will need
an application that's only available in a tarball.

I have two pc's and a firewall pc, and since getting rid of windows my TCO
has gone down - not only because of licensing fees but also my time. My
kids are able to use linux without help from me (use, not administer)
whereas with windows there were frequent corruption problems that I would
have to resolve. Caused, in part, by them downloading screen savers,
demos, games, malware, spyware, etc. This seems to be similar to Ronald's

Do they all have root password available so they can do updates,
reconfigure, build and install? These are things that are essentially
handfed to windoze users. You click on an install button and app X is
installed. Done. On linux this requires root. Simple enough if you are
used to this but it is just another layer of complexity if you are a doze
user.

Sure, this admin is everyone thing is one of the primary weaknesses of
doze wrt viruses, worms, and hackers, but it is easier to work with.

My father can install a CD in his doze computer and click Install
without problem. There would be problems if I had to walk him through
setting up a root password (and remember it!), then a user password
(remember it!). OK dad, setup your wireless connection. On doze this is
trivial. On linux it is a frickin pain in the ass (I do it, after a
modicum of hair pulling but then I know what I'm doing). You download
your tarball, untar it, read the readme and install files. HOPEFULLY you
will simply need to do a ./configure make make install (as root)
and the driver will be ready. Now you just have to either mess with ugly
commands via iwpriv or ifconfig. Depends on your device.

OK, now setup spam filtering. Hah! Joe Blow can't handle it. WE can
because we have generally been doing this for some time AND we have the
time and inclination to learn all of this. Add in procmail (and the need
to setup postfix or similar. Whew! Complexity beyond anything people
mess with in doze). Yes, linux is great and powerful. I love it. But I
would never ever be able to get my father, mother, wife to deal with all
this. And ya know, you just can't always be there to deal with other
people's computers all the time. My father doesn't live next door, he
lives next state over.

Unless Joe/Jane Blow user has an expert somewhere, they are not equipped
to deal with linux. It's just that simple. And again, how do you
explain to them that they'll just have to give up the cool games if they
go linux? They LOVE the games afterall. OK, just reboot to winders.
Well, why not just STAY in winders so you don't have to deal with the
rebooting all the time?

I merely think that for MOST people at home, linux is not there yet. For
people at work or at schools where there are admins to deal with all the
complexity of configuring and handling software install, it is perfectly
fine, but for most at home? Nope. Not yet.

If you put w2k back into the same partition, your Mandrake bootloader
menu, /boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/lilo.conf, will already have the proper
information to boot windows or Mandrake. However, installing windows
installs the windows bootloader to the MBR. You will just have to
reinstall Mandrake's bootloader.

One way to do this is boot CD1, press F1 when the screen say you can,
boot with rescue, and you will have a choice to reinstall the bootloader.
Otherwise, if you boot a generic rescue disk, mount your linux install,
chroot to that mount point, and run /sbin/lilo for lilo or sh
/boot/grub/install.sh for grub, that will reinstall the Mandrake
bootloader to the MBR.

recently received the MDK Definitive Manual. Do NOT think of spending
$39 (!!) + $11 SH on this! The quality of the book is horrible (it
started falling apart after a few pages flipped), the whole book is
totally unprofessionally made, and the content is for retarded DOS users:
a definitive manual missing fundamental things such as urpm* (CLI)

makes the worse book purchase I have ever made (and I buy a lot of books)

Hopefully one day someone will write something worth O'Reilly publishing,

[expert] Gnome Toaster question

2003-01-05 Thread Phil
Hello All,

While demonstrating the merits of Linux to an acquaintance I was asked to burn
an mp3 file to a CD in audio format. This is where my troubles started.

Xcdroast apparently will only accept wave files, and Gnome Toaster would only
burn the mp3 file as a data file no matter what setting I tried.

I tried mpg123 to convert the mp3 file to a wave file but that failed also.
mpg123 -w mp3file wavefile does nothing except display the help screen.
mpg123 --wav mp3file wavefile at least does something if only to create an
empty file named wavefile.

This has been an exercise in frustration compounded by the fact that I was
able the create an audio CD under MS Windows using Nero in a couple of
minutes and I have never used Nero before!

I use cdrecord to create back-ups but I have never had a need to create an
audio CD. How do I do this? Past messages suggest the Gnome Toaster is the
answer. Maybe the version supplied with Mandrake 9 is not working correctly?

I'm pleased to say that StarOffice now works perfectly, or almost so. Thank

There is one little problem though. When using the envelope function, the
address does not print for DL size envelopes (sender information does print).
The same problem occurs with openOffice and StarOffice 5.2 as well, so this
must be a common uncorrected bug. Other envelope sizes (the ones that I have
tried) and user defined size do print correctly.

I have just discovered that the problem occurs when the addressee's box is
positioned to the right of the sender's box. The printer head moves across
to the address area but does not print anything. I've tried two different
types of printers and the result is the same.

[expert] Any problems with NEC LCD 1550V monitor?

Hello,

I'm about to replace my CRT monitor with an LCD monitor mainly because of RF

The monitor that I'm considering is an NEC LCD 1550V Multisync. Online

I'm concerned by reports that text is hard to read especially for old eyes.

Apparently this is due to very thin characters. I would expect that if this a

By the way, I'm looking forward to upgrading to Mdk 8.2 and SO 6.

/boot/initrd.img under what circumstances would I *not* need to mkinitrd for my

/boot/kernel.h do I need a copy of my new one, from

any others?

which of the above files affect LILO, such that I would need to rerun it?

It generally means that you need to alter the permissions of your USB

is the device number of your USB camera. This number is easy to find
out, just ls /proc/bus/usb/001, and look for the non-001 entry! An even
easier way to do this is to grab the USB permissions daemon, install it,
and let it do the dirty work for you...

Doing the above causes gphoto2 --list-ports to include the USB port in the
list along with the serial ports. However, gtkam and konquerer still generate
the same error messages as before.

Gtkam causes this error to be displayed:

gp_port_usb_open: could not claim intf 0: Device or resource busy

Can you think of any reason that the USB port would be busy? I don't have any
other USB devices connected to the port.

Now, this may be a clue. Starting gtkam without the camera turned on causes a
segmentation fault. So, the camera itself must be causing the USB port to
appear busy. Perhaps the USB driver for the Kodak DC3400 is not working
correctly.

When my system is first started /dev/dsp does not exist and if I try to run

I can overcome this problem by running the sound configure tool from

sound message because /dev/dsp does not exist. Pressing the configure again
usually gets the configuration under way if Harddrake doesn't lock-up.

Stuffing around like this everytime I want to use /dev/dsp is very annoying.

[expert] Module problems - unresolved symbols

Hello all,

I'm trying to access a parallel port IDE drive (I had this working 3 or 4

RR does give hostnames, via the dhcp process, and they are usually some funky
long thing with part of the IP address in it.

It should work by simply running netconf, setting the adapter to dhcp, then
doing an ifup eth0 (if eth0 is your ethernet card). You can check your
config by "cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0". You should see
something like:

DEVICE="eth0"
BOOTPROTO="dhcp"
HOSTNAME=cs28144-55.satx.rr.com - what RR assigns as your hostname.
DOMAIN=satx.rr.com
IPADDR=""
NETMASK=""
ONBOOT="yes"

Look in /etc/sysconfig/network and see something like:

NETWORKING=yes
GATEWAYDEV=""
GATEWAY=""
FORWARD_IPV4=no
HOSTNAME=guardian.thompson.net

I've used RealTek NICs, with no problems. Do you have a link light on your
cable modem? Here in San Antonio, RR uses Toshiba PCX1100 modems...is the PC
light on? Is the link light on your PC NIC on? Is the ethernet cable
premade? It needs to be a "straight-through" cable, versus a cross-over.

Remember, you don't have to run dhcpd on your machine; that's for when you
want your machine to be a dhcp server.

Sorry if I've overstated the obvious: I've been a computer maintenance
technician for the Air Force for 18 years, and I've learned that sometimes
its the simplest things...

[expert] Problems installing kdelibs-2.1.1

Hello all,

I was dropped off the mailing list for some reason last week so forgive me if
this question has already been answered.

I managed to install the KDE 2.1.1 XFree files but I'm having a problem with
kdelibs. This is the error that I get:

unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/actions/
kde: cpio: mkdir.

Quite a lot of the file unpacks before the error message is displayed. Does
this mean that there is an error in my copy of kdelibs-2.1.1 or is it a
packaging fault?

I suspect a packaging fault because rpm test gives this response:
rpm: --tarbuild (-t) requires one of a,b,i,c,p,l as its sole argument

Steven,
Is there a way for just the DHCPD to make the updates? That way, as it
hands out the IP addresses, it updates the DNS. MetaIP in the Windows world
does this and it works quite well. Yes, you're right, my test machine was a
W2K workstation. I'll look at the docs you pointed me to more. I really
would like it though, if the DHCP daemon could just notify the DNS daemon of
the update.

If you _really_ want to allow all clients (W2K right?) to update your DNS
then add an allow-update statement to the zone definition in named.conf.

[expert] su Problems in GNOME

2001-01-23 Thread Baker Phil

Just noticed a problem on two PCs, both running LM
7.2. One PC is at work, one at home. The two boxes
are do not share a LAN connection.

In the GNOME Terminal, typing "su" at a non
privaledged prompt, I get the following error:

$ su
su: error in loading shared libraries:
libxalflaunch.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No
such file or directory
$

I get this error using the bash or tch shell from the
GNOME Terminal window. I haven't tried other shells
from within the GNOME Terminal. I do _not_ get this
error when typing "su" from within an Eterm or xterm
window. I am also unable to launch DrakConf from an
unprivaleged user's Gnome desktop.

Kind of strange this behavior appeared on the same day
on two separate boxes. The only thing these 2 boxes
have in common is they both run on the download
version of LM 7.2 and have been updated to the latest
LM 7.2 patches, using MandrakeUpdate.

Anyone else notice this problem?

I had written:
I must have a loadstone under my cubicle, because 85Hz refresh rate
flickers horribly. Fortunately I have a Gateway vx700 monitor, which
(along with my ATI card) does 100Hz @ 1024x768.

Unfortunately, I can't get this setting in mandrake. My monitor and card
are detected correctly. XF86Config-4 has the correct ranges for vertical
and horizontal refresh rates. I ran xf86config by hand and it produced the
same output that is already in XF86Config-4, no additional parameters for
specific refresh rates were evident. when I startx, however, my monitor
reports it is running at 85Hz.

How can I force this thing to do 100Hz @ 1024x768?

Then Amit Bapat [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Install XF 3.3.6

XF86Config-4 config file.

Other option:
Start XF 3.3.6 and fireup xvidtune. Note down all the values.
Then start XF4 and start xvidtune and adjust all the values to the
ones noted. and then generate a Modeline. Use this mode line in your
XF86Config-4.

Then pablito [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Well, they DO make a difference! Actually I ended up installing the
kvideogen rpm from the 2nd Mandrake 7.2 CD as opposed to firing up a
previous version of X. This is a neat-o program that creates a text
file with Modelines with the best refresh rates your monitor can
handle. I did have some trouble when I tried inserting the Modelines
into XF86Config (per the directions), but eventually i figured out the X
version thing and stuck them in XF86Config-4. Now I'm humming along at
107.1Hz!

 Subject: Re: [expert] pop-3

  Robert,

Do not confuse POP-3 with SMTP. POP-3 is a way to RETRIEVE mail only.
When you send mail, you utilize SMTP. It sounds like the most likely
explanation is independent of all of the above though. Either your SMTP
options in your E-mail program are incorrect (i.e.: an invalid
 SMTP host)
 or
the DNS server (that the SMTP server you connect to to send
 mail) can not
correctly resolve the domain of your mail host that is the
 final delivery
  point.

The (traveling) life of an E-mail
  -
Sender's mail client sends mail (SMTP) to it's listed SMTP host.
The SMTP host then decides if the user is local:
  Yes, Skip to Drop step
  No, Pass mail on
Pass mail onto server that holds the desired recipient (again utilizing
 SMTP)
  Drop mail into recipient's mailbox
  Recipient checks for mail (POP-3)
  -

As for on-demand POP-3, that is controlled by the inetd daemon. When a
request to the POP-3 port is received, inetd calls the POP-3 server
 program
which then processes the actual request (to retrieve user's mail). The
 same
goes for IMAP if you choose to *retrieve* your mail that way.

Summary: your POP-3 settings on your server should not have anything to
 do
with your server's ability to receive mail. Look either at your sending
  e-mail program's SMTP setting and/or check that your server's
 DNS entry is
  current and correct.

  Enjoy,

  Woody ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

does on demand cause this? if not what does?

RE: [expert] Postfix and getting rid of the machine name

2000-10-31 Thread Phil Connor

I can't get rid of the machine name when trying to send E-mail to my
accounts. I uncommented the myorigin = $mydomain line in main.cf and
reloaded postfix, but no such luck.

Try this and see if it helps... in your main.cf add this to the bottom of
the file

masquerade_domains = yourdomain.name

where as if your machine name was mail.foo.bar your masquerade_domains would
be foo.bar

Didn't work so I chopped the machine name off the domain name. Now it
works, but there must be another way, maybe with aliasesDB?

This is not true anymore for 2.2 kernels, and since ..

Wish that were true in all cases, got a p3/600 setting right behind me that
required me to append the memory in Lilo. Seems it's more bios related since
the kernel version is 2.2.15

  I am running
Mandrake 7 on one machine with 320 megs of memory.
something else (such as a bug in the memory info program) ?

Try typing "free" (no quotes)in a term window the first line first # refers
to system ram if it doesn't say 320,000 or more as the first # then you must
append it in lilo.conf regardless of the kernel version

RE: [expert] syslog restarts and other wierdness

2000-10-19 Thread Phil Connor

I don't understand, dhcpd should just use the address of the NIC. How
does it know "the address is already in use"?

Nope! try setting the ipaddress for DHCPD as .0 example 192.168.20.0 and
then set your range to start with your nic address like 192.168.20.20 -
192.168.20.40

Perhaps there is more that one dhcpd running on the box. What does the
log file say? What does the output from ifconfig say? What does your
dhcpd.conf file say?

Only if he has several or virtual address's which will all have to have an
entry/declaration even if their not used to give address out.

I had this when I installed MDK 7.02 on my laptop. I *think* I had to

I am able to access the disk after booting from a DOS-diskette, or a

I too have an Acer scanner and would like to be able to use it under Linux.

The sane docs mention that the Acer brand is not supported because Acer will
not release any programming information. I tried wine but the scanner card is
not supported by Linux.

several basic things. Like why does every file in C start with #! include?

#! "shell" is the first line of a shell script. It indicates the name of the
shell, bash, in most cases.

#include file.h is an include file and this is used in C/C++.

Has anyone else had any problems with this, or know
