Al,

I saved up my pennies and bought the same iBook you have last October.
I have a gigE dual 450 G4 that used to be my main machine, but now
this iBook is it. The G4 is still in the same place on my desk but is
now acting as a server for the most part. I love the portability of
this iBook, I use it everywhere in the house, I even put it on the
book holder of my exercise bike and do a little web surfing while
riding the bike. I also find it nice to have while waiting for my kids
at the different lessons I take them to all week. I love this iBook,
it has replaced my desktop 100%. I do like having everything I do on
this iBook, I think that is part of the draw, it would be hard to have
some things on this and some things on a desktop. I guess it all comes
down to personal preference and how you work.

Now, you did say you could buy a new iMac and set it up, I have to
admit, if I had the cash on hand I might buy a new iMac and replace
the old beige G3 we have in our kitchen. :)

take care,
Kevin Avery

I use my G4 iBook as my main computer. I'm a heavy user often on my
'book 10+ hrs a day, but my son brought his new G5 iMac home over
winter break. There's no comparison. The iMac is awesome. If I had
to choose one it would be the iMac. The screen, the speed. You'll be
much more productive on it.

Re: REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook 500/ OS X 10.3.9?

2005-08-15 Thread Matt Kane's Brain
I think you may need to manually set up ip addresses on each powerbook.
This is not difficult, but your original post leads to believe that you
may not agree. :)

On the OSX machine, go to System Preferences -> Network -> Ethernet ->
Configure and type in 192.168.1.1 for IP address and 255.255.255.0 for
Subnet mask. If you use Ethernet on that PowerBook regularly, you will
probably want to create a new Location before doing this.

On the OS 9 machine, you need to go into the Control Panel for TCP/IP
and do pretty much the same, but use 192.168.1.2 for your IP address.

Homeowner's policies cover personal possessions against loss or

cover dependent children at school as well.

That said, they may require a specific rider to do that. Check with

Correct. Many homeowner's policies cover personal possessions from
loss, accidents, etc. If I leave my iBook sitting in the airport, drop
it down the steps, spill a drink on it, it's covered. (minus the
deductible of course, up to the policy limit, which is $3500 in my
case.) A few years back my son's bicycle was stolen while he was at a
friend's house. Covered.

Check with your agent.

I'd like to have opinions on what I should do with my daughter's iBook.
Back in September 2004, I purchased a 12", 1GHz iBook for my daughter.
All
was well and she was very happy.

About a month ago, she called me and said that her iBook was suddenly
acting
strangely. I went over and noticed that the display would only show
vertical, narrow colored lines on a black background. I think I posted
to
the list about what the problem could be.

In anycase, I asked her what happened and she said "nothing". I was a
little
suspicious because after having used a PowerBook for more than 3
years, I
know that things cannot get wrong all of a sudden for no reason.

I took the iBook, still under warranty, to the closest Apple store. The
genius looked at it and said there was obviously something wrong with
the
main logic board and said they would have to send it to the Apple's
repair
facility.

3 days later, I've got an email from the Apple repair facility asking
me to
call them because they had discovered a problem. I knew that this
wouldn't
be good so I called my daughter immediately and told her what was
happening
and that before calling Apple, I wanted to have the truth. Sure enough,
something wrong happened. She actually spilled water over the keyboard
and
since she didn't know what to do and didn't want to tell me, you can
imagine
the consequences.

So, I called Apple and they confirmed what I had just found out. There
was
still liquid residues on the motherboard and this had shorted the
display
circuit. It seems that the computer is still working fine because I
was able
to boot it in target disk mode just fine.

Anyway, Apple quoted me at over $750 to replace the motherboard of the
iBook
who was purchased for $1000.

So, what are my options here? I thought I could maybe find a
replacement for
less and replace it myself, since I have disassembled various
PowerBooks and
was able to put them back together and they still worked. However, that
would probably void her warranty. OTOH, my experience is that the
warranty
might not be that helpful and will be running out anyway in a few
months.

So, what are you people suggesting?
Thanks for any opinion!

Re: Dead (ish) Wallstreet help ?

2005-05-11 Thread Matt and Sue Halter
First, after you do shift-Fn-ctl-power and the fan runs hit the power
button again.

Second, a bad keyboard will give you startup problems. Do you have
access to another keyboard?

Third, I saw the tech in our High School bring more things back to life
by resetting the pram. She would reset it at least 3 times before
trying anything else. Here's the drill if need to refresh:
  1. Locate the keys Command, Option, P, and R.

  2. Make sure the Caps Lock key is not down.
  3. Restart your Macintosh (using the Command, Control, and Power
keys or the reset button, if necessary).
Immediately after hearing the startup sound, press the Command,
Option, P, and R keys simultaneously. If you don't hold down the key
combination within 5 and 10 seconds after you restart, you may need to
repeat steps 1 through 3.

  4. Hold down the keys until you hear the startup sound again.
  5. If the computer shuts itself off, press the Power key to turn
it back on.

  6. When the computer has finished starting up, restore any custom
control panel and network settings.

Also, does it exhibit this behavior plugged in and unplugged, battery
only? Have you tried to startup from a system CD?

I think a dead pram battery can also cause startup problems. Sometimes
it can be revived by leaving the computer plugged in for a few days.

no noise from the HD. The reset keys combo will also shutdown, so
basically the thing is dead except the reset keys combo will toggle on
the light & fan. Any ideas?

there about an hour before I did.

As I am all finished with school, I thought that perhaps the 15" model
would
be a better fit, as I no longer truck my laptop all over the greater
LA area
day in and day out, but looking at them side by side, the 12" was just
just
so much sexier, and well, I couldn't resist.

Part of it also was the EXTREMELY positive experience that I had with
my
previous 12" G4 (1.0 GHz), and while I'm sure that the 15" is just as
reliable and well made, the 12" really fits the way I use a laptop.

So far, I really don't notice much of a performance difference,
although my
1GHz book already had a fast 5400RPM TravelStar drive like the new one
does.
There are small differences though. The new scrolling trackpad is very
nice, and only took me about a minute to get used to (no more SideTrack
driver), and the keyboard feels even better, if such a thing is
possible.
I'm scoring the keyboard as just production variance, but it is
possible
that somewhere in the last two years that Apple may have switched
suppliers
or just improved on the design, as the keys are both quieter and a
little
crisper in feel, VERY NICE.

Everything else is about the same. I don't have any BT devices so I
can't
test the new BT speed. I'll install "Knights of the Old Republic" and
"Return to Castle Wolfenstein" over the weekend and I'm sure the
difference
of 50% faster processor speed and double the VRAM will make a huge
difference.

In all, I cannot complain. With my student pricing (they gave it to
me even
though I graduated at the end of July) I ended up with a 1.5GHz, 80GB
HD,
SuperDrive and AirPort Extreme for the same price I paid for the 1GHz
with a
40GB slow drive and the add-on AirPort Extreme card last year. What a
deal!

Re: iBook question again

Aase,
My advice is to buy one with the faster processor. My G4 800 is a dog
compared to my wife's 1 gig mhz. The 30 gig HD is too small. You'll
run out of space fast especially if you have lots of music or photos.
Built in bluetooth is nice but I would trade it off to get a faster
processor and larger HD. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Will PC133 sodimm work in a clamshell?

2004-12-23 Thread Matt
Yeah it should work, the clamshell will just slow it
down to match its own bus speed. The interesting thing
is that most on-line memory retailers will note that
the memory they have for all Clamshells are rated at
PC100 speed i.e. 100MHz, but the Clamshell's bus
operates at 66MHz. So when you stick a PC100 memory
stick in, the computer will run it at PC66 speed. It
should do the same with a PC133 memory stick too.

In case anyone doesn't know, Audion (an MP3 player a

Re: lombard & diablo 2

2004-12-13 Thread Matt
I had this game for a while and played it on my iBook
466SE with 320Mb ram. It played pretty well, a few
pauses here and there which I put down to the 66MHz
bus and the slower HDD that spins at 4200rpm.

I think this because I also had it loaded on an iMac
450MHz with a 100MHz bus and 5400 rpm HDD. That ran
the game with less hiccups, almost perfect I think.

Yes, I would invest in more ram for your lombard, but
before you do, try messing around with the games
settings. You can turn off things like shadows and
some sort of 3D trick which can help run the game
faster. I think graphic detail can be turned down as
well.

The other thing is to see if you have the latest
version of Open GL installed. You can download this
from Apple. In theory that can make a difference too,
but I'm not technically minded enough to know if it
does. Something like each new version of Open GL
improves graphics and maths routines to make things
move better...

An internal CDRW for Wallstreet powerbook

Actually you can buy new iBooks from MCE with superdrives installed for
about $200 extra. Usually includes upgraded hard drive and ram as
well. Not a bad deal.

Matt

The iBooks do not have the Superdrive option either so that was
another draw to the PB.

Re: iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program

2004-01-31 Thread Matt Halter
On Saturday, January 31, 2004, at 01:53 AM, Robin Ashe wrote:

All the tray loading iMacs had this problem. They were very fragile.
Funny, my tray loading iMac has worked from day one. Guess you are
lying to make a point since "all" tray loaders don't have this problem.

The standard CD drive that came in my PC that was manufactured around
the same time as the iMac had a much sturdier design. The system
worked without it but it had to be sent in to an AARS to be fixed. If
the design had been similar to most desktop PCs or Power Macs the
drive could have been taken out and sent in to be replaced instead of
the whole computer.
The standard drive that was in your PC wouldn't have fit. Secondly, in
less than 10 minutes you can pull those drives, you didn't have to send
the whole computer. But if you did I bet you got the whole computer
checked out not only the drive.

That's because it really isn't any better. That's just a myth.
The fact that you personally can't discern a difference doesn't mean
it's a myth. It's only your opinion.

I'm not sure where you put those two ideas together. I still maintain
it was a design flaw, and the Extension Program supports this.
Regarding it being an "issue" had to do with Apple being dishonest
about the issue.

Again, simply because it's your belief that it's a design flaw doesn't
mean it actually is one. You have offered no technical evidence, only
anecdotal evidence. My son has owned one of the effected iBooks
without problems. Secondly, if Apple had not yet determined what the
issue was I don't think you can call them liars for saying there was no
known issue, unless you have specific evidence when they determined the
problem.

Me and 2000 other people. You can go ahead and call each one of them
out on the issue if you like.

2000 out of almost a million iBooks sold. 2 tenths of one percent.
How bout you call the almost 998,000 folks who haven't had a problem.
That'll give you a different perspective, eh?

That doesn't change the fact that users of iBooks that aren't covered
are left out in the cold.
Sorry, life isn't fair sometimes.

Re: Any way to import video into a Wall Street Powerbook?

2003-12-15 Thread Matt Halter
I can vouch for the Capsure, but it will only import analog video. It
doesn't digitize it. Your best bet is to use something like the ADS
Pyro Pro (which will digitize your analog video and import and export
in multiple ways) and you could import via firewire PC card (which I
think would be fastest way to transfer video to the hard drive). I
don't know of any PC card that will import and digitize at the same
time. There are some digital video cameras that allow you to run
analog video into them and they digitize it for you. Some of those
export in USB as well as Firewire.

Re: Wallstreet Woes -- Commiserators welcome

I would suggest 1) resetting the pram 3 times. 2) Reset Power manager.
 3) Reseat ram chips and processor. 4) Pull one ram chip at a time and
try the computer with the other chip to test them. 5) Sometimes a
failing keyboard can cause strange symptoms on the Wallstreet. These
steps have all cured similar problems on my Wallstreet II.

instead of the happy mac (or the white apple of OS 10)...

I've tried reinstalling OS 10, deleting OS 10, lots of things, like
formatting and partitioning the hard drive again.
But despite all my best efforts, the unit continues to have
difficulty. I've
done away with OS 10 completely. Running OS 9.2.2 (or 9.1 on the other
partition) and am running extensions I know are compatible on my other
mac
units. Yet the computer continues to have intermittent freeze ups--
well not
really intermittent-- I can count on at least once a day.

I've gone back to using my pb 1400; but I'd like to use the wallstreet
again
someday, due to bigger screen, and especially, enough RAM to run
photoshop.

If anyone has experienced similar wallstreet woes, and has an answer,
I'm
all ears. Of if this situation "sounds familiar" maybe you have a
suggestion.

Thanks to all
Sid

Re: wallstreet and 256mb ram module = update

2003-11-14 Thread Matt Halter
John,

My understanding when I bought my Powerlogix upgrade was the card would
not officially support more than 128mb ram in either slot (256 total)
Although I believe a few folks were able to have more recognized, it
seemed to be hit or miss. The Sonnet upgrades recognize 512mb.

How much do you want for them. I might be able to use them in my
daughter's iMac.

Re: Which Powerbook?

2003-09-03 Thread Matt Halter
The speed tests I've seen put the iBook even or faster than the little
Al Book, except when using software that uses the G4's altivec. IBooks
get more run time when on battery power, especially the 14". What you
describe your wife will be doing the iBook will handle no sweat.
Worked as computer tech in High School this past year. We had approx.
120 ibooks in use, around 40 used by teachers. Never heard one
complaint about speed and most of them were using 600mhz/700mhz ibooks
doing exactly what you say your wife will do. We used iBooks to do all
our presentations. Very easy. Bought my son a 800mhz 12" iBook for
Christmas, we haven't been disappointed. That said, the practical
advantages to the Al book are it has airport extreme, they're now
making Gig ram chips for it (doubles ibook)(in the OS X era that can be
important), and it has the way cool aluminum exterior. If I were you
I'd buy an ibook and spend what I saved not getting the al book on an
ipod.(Apple had special deal on ibook/ipod purchase). In a year, if
it's not fast enough, sell it and buy a new G5 laptop. Just my 2 cents.

My suggestion is for the 12" G4. My reasoning is that it represents
the most recent technology, where the 15" TiBook is a bit older design
and the iBook even older with a G3 processor. It also is very small
and light--a plus.
Still, it would be nice to have a bigger screen than the 12". If that
were so, how would the 14" iBook go versus the 867mhz TiBook.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: DVD on Wallstreet

2003-09-01 Thread Matt Halter
I don't have my OS X handbook with me but I remember reading about a
problem with OS 9 not being able to boot. I don't remember the
solution but I know there was one. If I can get to my book tomorrow
I'll send you the info. In the meantime, I've had several computers
with OS X not want to boot off the 9 disk. A re-install(not a clean
install) of X took care of the problem sometimes. Also, try resetting
the power manager and pram. A couple weeks ago my wife's Wallstreet
wouldn't boot from anything and out of desperation I reset the PM and
pram and got it to at least begin booting off a CD. Can't explain why
that worked, but may be worth a try if you haven't already.

As an aside--Most of my mac using friends feel it is asking for trouble
installing X over 9. They all recommend wiping the disk and starting
fresh. I was a doubter, but the more I see, the more I think they may
be right.

Hmm, so you did install onto the Wallstreet with the CD before
installing X?
Or did you use a separate CD? The thing is, if you cannot boot using
the CD
you installed 9 with... then there is a problem with the CD or your

It does sound like your HD is going south though... the best way to
check is
to boot off the 10.2.x Install CD and run Disk Utility, or from the OS
9 CD
(Catch-22) and run Disk Utility.

Re: Buying new Powerbook

2003-07-14 Thread Matt Halter
Your assumptions are not entirely accurate. I bought my son's ibook
for $1200. Used average on ebay at the time, for combo drive older
model only about $130 less with slower processor, smaller hard drive,
slower combo drive, and weaker video card, out of warranty. SmallDog
selling Apple refurbed 800mhz combo drives for under $1000 for next 3
days. I'm willing to bet doesn't lose anymore value in next couple of
years vs. pismo at $800 used which is what I was comparing value to on
my post. For this price why wait? The performance/value/$$ ratio is
as good or better than used.

Ummm.. not meaning any offense, but why? The last time I bought a new
computer was in 1990. That was a high-end 386 IIRC, close to being
cutting-edge (for the time), and the reason I bought it new was because
there were few on the secondhand market.
An iBook is by definition not cutting-edge - it is value-priced. Much
better plan, IMHO, to let someone else take the computer off the shelf
and incur the resultant devaluation whack. I simply don't see the
percentage in buying a new (new) computer unless either:
a) a specific model is required for something, e.g. college course, or
b) it's a gift for someone else, or
c) you simply must have the BEST and LATEST now.
Simple economics: the same money that will buy you a new mediocre
computer will buy you a couple-of-years-old-cutting-edge model.

Re: Buying new Powerbook

2003-07-14 Thread Matt Halter
I don't have any firsthand knowledge with the Pismo but from everything
I've seen they are rock solid. If you want something that is
upgradeable the Pismo is your ticket. I had the opportunity to work in
my local High School for the last 7 wks of school as the Computer Lab
assistant and all the hardware problems were funneled through me to the
district tech. We averaged one iBook being sent out for warranty work
a week while I was there, (we had 110 in the building you do the
math-None of them were the newer 800 or 900mhz models.), all because of
the well documented screen/cable problem. I would be wary of buying an
older iBook used/out of warranty/Applecare. That being said, they were
loved by the teachers who used them and everything else seemed to work
great. We bought my son a new 800mhz combo ibook last Christmas and he
won't give it up for anything. It simply rocks. If you shop hard you
can find new/refurbished iBooks very reasonable. SmallDog had their
refurbished 14" 700Mhz combo's on sale for $1065 this past weekend.
New 700mhz CD only under $800. If it were up to me I'd pony up for a
new iBook- its the first "new" mac I've bought in the last 13 years.
And I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

Ah, thats ok then.

I've dealt with loads of people before who just open up things with
capacitors the size of a house, and look blank when you say "No, thats
dangerous. Bad.".

For polishing the coating off, I recommend brasso. It gets rid of
anything! Once you have it clean wash it in hot water a number of
times, I would think that would be fine. Do you know the clarity of
screens? (I don't) Are you certain you will get a satisfactory result,
as far as i know they are quite think and also would the 'mesh' be a
problem?

It's a nice idea nonetheless, would certainly look fantastic if
successful.

Screens are under extreme pressure. They also hold a substantial charge

Re: Unreal Tournament on Pismo?

2003-06-23 Thread Matt Peacock
Yes you'll be fine, UT is very CPU dependent, and you have no problems
there. Your 8MB will render an excellent 640x480 game and a very good
800x600 game, you'll find you can set the detail levels quite high
as-well. For internet play, you might want to knock down the number of
players by a couple.

That is, if you are talking about the original Unreal Tournament. If
you are talking about UT2003, forget it. People with dual 1.25GHz are
getting crap frame-rates out of it, hopefully patches will bring it up
to speed.

Re: Are there any alternatives to Aqua window manager?

2003-06-22 Thread Matt Peacock
I completely understand. I have a PowerBook G4 and still notice the
sluggishness. Even Classic is fantastically snappy compared to X.
The reason is that OS X has fantastic multi-tasking capabilities, at
the sacrifice of UI responsiveness. OS 9 stops everything while you
hold down the mouse button, OS X stops nothing.

Apple's own internal tests cited this as a major focus area (along with
boot-up and login time), and one that has been tackled in Panther.
Although it pains me to say it, it looks as if you are going to have to
shell out for another OS upgrade.

I'm not saying OS X is slow on my 500MHz 768Mb G3 Pismo but it doesn't
feel as responsive as I'd like it to.
I use APM Tunner, Shadow Killer and themes with no transparency but I
get no noticeable improvements.
The "eye candy" may look good but I'm getting quite fed up with it.
When you work with a computer on an everyday basis it's hard to accept
the time you loose while looking at window animations and transparent
menus.
I'm thinking of buying one of the faster Powerbook G4 but I'd like to
see Apple try to please their costumers, even the ones that don't have
the money to buy a new computer, before a give (a lot) of my money to
them.
I once tried Yellow Dog on the Pismo. Color correction was all wrong -
the LCD was rather bluish, the OpenGL drivers were buggy but the
screen was Fast! Faster than the 1GHz Pentium III with Redhat/Sawfish
I use at work. Why is OS X/Aqua like this? Even computer games have
performance tunning options.
Anyone has any sugestions?

Re: Webcam and NetMeeting ?

Now If I could only find a good website telling me how to set up the
cam as
a webcam (that old style, non streaming, new pic every 10 secs), I'd be
happy ... Nowadays looking for that in google only reveals xxx stuff ..
Have you tried looking for info like that on something like techtv.com?
I was just thinking that if you could find a site with some decent
information on it, you could bypass the xxx. Otherwise the boards at
macaddict.com have been helpful for me.

Just a thought if you havent given those a go yet.

most techs use plastic bins - you can get them at Office Max, Office
Depot, etc etc, and at most computer stores that also sell tools -
MicroCenter, Fry's, etc. effectively, they're just like ice-cube
trays, but with more compartments and a top.

Yep, thats what I do, it's very useful (once you've taken a few laptops
apart and NOT marked what goes where, you'll understand how important
this is. No you won't remember when you come back to it the next day!)

lots of techs also use paper cups in mostly the same way, but they
stack the paper cups as they go.

Now there's a good idea...

Re: 17" PowerBook

2003-06-10 Thread Matt Peacock
Granted. but if the majority of users dont want 2 button mouses, or
will plan on buying a more professional mouse than a simple 2 button
mouse, why should apple put the money into it? especially if it would
contradict the apple design philosophy.

you have to keep in mind that with the imac line, and even the emac,
apple has been courting the consumer market, not the power users. So
the majority of new purchases will either be from people who want the
simple apple design, or you have a high end power user who will
purchase a kensington pro trackball, regardless of whether or not
apple produces a 2 button mouse.

As i see it, those are the two major markets apple caters to, with the
rest of us falling in the middle. and for those of us who would like a
2 button mouse, it isnt going to affect our decision to buy either > way.

anyways.. thats how i see it. and quite personally, i think that 2
buttons on my pismo would really ruin the almost seamless design of
the body.

No no no, I completely agree with you, the amount of time I spend
trying to explain when to use the right button, when to double click, I
stand by Apple's decision for a one-button mouse. (especially when
working with some people who randomly press the left or right button
depending on how they feel!), I was just saying that money isn't THAT
tight!

It is funny when ignorant PC users say you can't upgrade macs, then
complain they come with one-button mice. Perhaps the simplest upgrade
of all would be to unplug the Apple mouse and plug in a Logitech
mouse!!! Of all the Windows PC's I have, only one is still using the
mouse it came with, and that's because I dropped the replacement one
down the stairs, so to me the fact PC's come with 2-button mice is
irrelevant, I replace them anyway.

About the clean lines, I agree that the laptops would loose some of
their finesse, but how about a 'rocker' button design and a system
preference, default is one-button operation, but 'advanced' users can
set it to two button operation. (just a possible solution, not one that
I anticipate or expect Apple to implement)

Personally I have a wireless Microsoft mice on my Macs, I can
right-click and scroll to my hearts content.

Granted. but if the majority of users dont want 2 button mouses, or
will plan on buying a more professional mouse than a simple 2 button
mouse, why should apple put the money into it? especially if it would
contradict the apple design philosophy.

you have to keep in mind that with the imac line, and even the emac,
apple has been courting the consumer market, not the power users. So
the majority of new purchases will either be from people who want the
simple apple design, or you have a high end power user who will
purchase a kensington pro trackball, regardless of whether or not apple
produces a 2 button mouse.

As i see it, those are the two major markets apple caters to, with the
rest of us falling in the middle. and for those of us who would like a
2 button mouse, it isnt going to affect our decision to buy either way.

anyways.. thats how i see it. and quite personally, i think that 2
buttons on my pismo would really ruin the almost seamless design of the
body.

I'm not sure I understand this discussion, can someone please

Apple have 41b cash, plus even more tied up in investments, money to

PowerBook G4 12"/17" Battery Problems

2003-06-09 Thread Matt Peacock
Hi,

I, along with other G-Books members gave some advice to someone on this
list for their powerbook battery not reaching full charge, if I
remember correctly they had it replaced.

Just reading the service manual and if the computer charges to 95% or
under, replace the DC board, ie, if anyones battery doesn't get past
95%, send it in for repair.

Just thought you'd all like to know in case anyone else is experiencing
this.

I couldn't quite stretch to a 17", so I got a 12", but I know a couple
of people who have one and the ONLY thing they have said so far is:

You can't use it on trains/planes unless you are in 1st/business class.
However they also say that after a few weeks using it, you will never
go back to a smaller screen laptop.

I know very little about this, but was recently fiddling with the

While all replies about how hard to answer this question are, the
simple answer, which i think is all you were looking for is, that AAC @
128 kbps is a very good rate for the average listener, and better than
mp3 @ 128kbps.

I believe that apple says that [EMAIL PROTECTED] is equivalent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

i hope that helps. I used to encode my mp3's at 160kbps, and I was
pretty happy with that, and I have been pleased with AAC at 128kbps. I
think the best thing you could do would be trial and error though.

It all depends what you are listening to the music through, how much

Re: PDF files

2003-06-07 Thread Matt Peacock
Even if you are fortunate enough to own Acrobat or Acrobat Exchange, a
.pdf file may be "protected" by the originator so that it cannot be
altered. A password can be set when the file is originated.
Using Acrobat Reader 5, you can print to PDF, then import into Acrobat,
thereby getting round the protection.

This is why Adobe removed Print to PDF in Acrobat 6.

Re: 12" Speed

2003-06-06 Thread Matt Peacock
Considering you did not read the post Todd, I find it very hard to
accept what you have just said.

I did not cry about censorship, I merely stated the fact that when I
posted about the problem it was deleted and I was sent the posted
email. You have taken my comments out of context and exaggerated them.
I completely understand the need for Apple to preserve a company image,
and I have no intention of running them down, on the contrary I sing
their praises every opportunity I get.

The rules are clear, being a member, and moderator, of many forums, I
know what is and is not acceptable for discussion. I did not start a
complaint, I was completely professional in asking for people's
opinions on the speed, how to improve it, and was it possibly just my
machine with a fault. The fact that Apple got very defensive about this
is out of my hands, however not listening to the consumers is a
self-defeating prophecy, once again I draw your attention to the MDD
fans and the Airport deaths. Apple clearly states the discussion boards
are there for users to post their problems, they have become a massive
part of customer support. After paying $1800 for this machine, and
approximately $10,000 in the last two years on Apple hardware and
software, and being repeatedly told about the forums, I did not see an
issue in posting an OBSERVATION.

Finally apologies to the list nanny, while typing this I received the
request to cease discussion. I understand this has now gone off-topic,
but my original reply to Scott's message was completely on topic, and I
do not appreciate having judgments made abut me from that reply.

haul you off to jail, they simply stated you would be barred from
posting for a period of time on THEIR servers. I thought that the
email was fairly professional. They have not barred you from posting
emails on other lists (although I am sure those lists also have
rules). Your point about the product may be right on, however your
cries of censorship I believe are a bit off. The rules of those
boards are very clear for anyone who wants to post. I completely
agree with Mr Reeder.

Apple (as a huge profitable powerful corporation) allow any
discussion to appear on that bulletin board that didn't enhance their
image and contribute to their bottom line? This is definitely not
Russia 1948! In the former USSR a capitalist firm such as Apple
would not be permitted to exist, not permitted to innovate, not
permitted to compete nor would individuals be permitted any
opportunity to criticize an industry. For crying out loud you are
complaining about a corporations right to manage its image. You
don't like it tough. Start your own company. Your freedom of speech
has not be infringed by an agency of the United States government.
Cries of censorship are out of line. You are absolutely free to
discuss/praise/criticize Apple, Microsoft, Ford Motor Company and
Joe's Carryout Store on your own list. Or this list. Or your very
own newspaper or e'zine. Why do you want to abridge Apple's freedom
to operate their business as they see fit? Your right to free
speech and assembly is guaranteed by the United States Consitution
not Apples papers of incorporation. Look, I love my Mac but I have
no illusions about Apple as a corporation. They want to make a

Re: 12" Speed

2003-06-06 Thread Matt Peacock
Same thoughts here, and we're not alone, many people on both
MacRumors.com and Apple's own discussion boards have commented on this.

Unfortunately putting it on Apple's boards got me a threatening email
saying if I did it again my ISP would be informed and my IP blocked
from registering or posting again.

Everyone seems to agree it is a collection of issues, which could be
solved by:
- Firmware update (to solve the dreadfully slow booting)
- Graphics drivers (current implementation is very, very poor)
- OS Updates (the cynic in me says Apple will put this into 10.3, as an
incentive, imagine a post on Apple's discussion boards saying "I just
installed 10.3 on my 12/15/17" PB and WOW! I never knew the machine
could go that fast, every-thing's snappy, my frame-rates in games have
improved no end etc etc")

I suppose all you can do for now is ensure you have the latest updates
from Apple (10.2.6, Bluetooth update, CD firmware update, iMovie 3.0.3,
iSync 1.1, Quicktime 6.3 etc etc)

Re: PowerBook 12" Battery

Apple seem to be very polar.

I've had cases where I've been on the phone less than 10 minutes, have
had a full apology, replacements sent out (and sometimes a
complimentary gift), with boxes for sending the offending component
back.

Other times I've had the dreaded "It is not a problem, that is normal"
or the even worse "It falls within the computers specification".

It all depends who you talk to I suppose.

us to believe. I hooked the AC up again tonight while
the battery was at 43% and it's risen to 76% and quit.
Again. And I don't have my ipod attached.
Forgive me if I sound sarcastic or angry but it's
frustrating!

Re: PowerBook 12" Battery

2003-05-29 Thread Matt Peacock
OS X stops charging when it reaches (usually 90-90%), to prevent lots
of rapid discharges and re-charges damaging the battery.

Your iPod is probably drawing charge and affecting this, disconnect the
iPod and see what charge you reach before it stops, if it is still 88%,
phone Apple support.

Thanks. The only thing is is it happens to me to no

When I deleted the discontinued email address from the preferences,

kinda crazy to think 64mb was ever good enough for anything after just

Pismo Replacement LCD

2003-03-29 Thread Matt Dudek
Hi, I have a G3 Pismo with a broken LCD. I'm too poor to simply have
someone else repair it. So i cracked it open and removed the LCD, but
now I need to put a new one in it.

The Pismo shipped in two revs. the first rev shipped with the Samsung
LT141X7-124, and the second rev. shipped with the LG.Philips LP141XA.
In checking with a friend who had to replace his LCD in his Pismo he
said that the connections for the Samsung, and the LG.Philips looked
identical, but I'm afraid that the voltages would be different or there
would be some other reason I couldnt replace my samsung LCD with the LG
LCD.

In short, can I;

1. replace my Samsung LCD with the LG display?

2. or does anyone know another LCD I can replace it with?

3. does anyone know a place to buy a Samsung LCD for under $200 (ebay
doesnt haveit, i checked.)

Thanks in advance for any help,
Matt Dudek

My understanding is it is OS 9 only. No intention to develope OS 10

I don't know of any 3rd party drivers.

Re: Powerbook G3

2002-11-11 Thread Matt Halter
I don't use Office but my wife does at work and she says its slow. I
have that same printer and it only slows way down when you print a photo
at the best setting. For normal documents it is pretty spiffy, much
faster than my newer photosmart 1115. I've used it with my Wallstreet
II (266mhz/192mb) and it worked fine, spitting out almost 8 pages of
double spaced text in a minute.

Have you updated the drivers? The latest versions are available for
download at hp.com. Does it print just as slow when printing from other
programs? If you're running OS9 or earlier increase the memory
allocated to Office 98. Turn off virtual memory if you are using it,
especially if her hard drive is full, that may make a difference.

The only thing you have to fear is fear itself. It's very simple. All
you have to do is unscrew a couple screws and then do some gentle
prying. I've got some easy to follow directions I can send you if

Re: Wallstreet firewire pc card q?

2002-07-19 Thread Matt Halter

Firewire works fine on Wallstreet. The MHZ limit is really what you
need to process digital video adequately. Now the speeds you get moving
data will not be as good as say the new iBooks, but it will certainly
connect you no problem. It will only limit the burn speed of a burner
you hook up or drop some frames of video compared to the newest chipsets.

Re: Upgrade

I can't argue with your reasoning. I'm not asking for a freebie ,but, I
feel like if I was their guinea pig, working through the beta version on
up, they ought to give me a break. Jaguar wouldn't be here without some
of us willing to take the time and $$$ to work through the teething of
OS X. As I listened to the keynote this morning I reacted negatively to
the pricing of Jaguar (although I'm amazed at what's in it, and can't
argue with the value you're getting). I did react positively to paying
for .mac. I think .mac is the first thing on the internet I really
won't mind paying for directly. Go figure.

Re: Comments on the "Jaguar" (OS 10.2) upgrade policy (there is NONE)?

2002-07-17 Thread Matt Halter

Jaguar sounds fantastic, but, unless I upgrade from my wallstreet II and
older iMacs I can't really make use of all its speed and power. If I do
upgrade my hardware I won't have to shell out the big bucks just for
Jaguar. I really expected to get a price break on the upgrade since I
bought my newest iMac only 7 months ago and it came with 10.1 Maybe
the pricing is to motivate us older hardware owners to upgrade.
That's how I'm looking at it.

Re: G3 Powerbook/Powerlogix

2002-05-13 Thread MATT HALTER

I know it's been ugly with powerlogix and replacements. But I've had a
bluechip upgrade in my WSII for 15 months with no problems. It would be
interesting to know what percentage of boards have failed. Anyone seen any
numbers?

I don't know what "normal" temperature is, but chips usually have an
auto-shutdown mechanism if it gets too hot to operate safely. I have a
Wallstreet 233 (cacheless) with 192 MB RAM, and an upgraded hard disk and
processor (466 w/ 1MB@233). I think the previous owner messed up some of
the thermal paste that was on there (among countless other things), so mine
probably runs on the hot side. Gauge PRO typically reports a temperature of
62-65C, though that's with it propped up on books on my desk for
circulation. I've seen it go as high as 80, perhaps even higher.
Regardless, I still have stability problems that I think are heat-related
(as I was typing this post up, the machine locked up--good thing Entourage
saved my message.)

Floppy Drive for PB G3

2002-05-05 Thread Matt Reiff

Quick question. Anyone know where I might pick up a cheap floppy drive for
a Wallstreet? I dropped a bag containing that, a bunch of disks, and a zip
100 drive; everything survived with negligible damage except for the floppy
drive. Looks like the r/w head is trash, as is the mechanism. Anyone have
info on where I could obtain one inexpensively, of perhaps have one they're
looking to get rid of?

TIA.

Someone else, can't remember who, said this would not be the case because
the desktop is just another folder. Not true--the desktop is on display all
of the time, meaning that all of the icons constantly have to be loaded in
memory. Different, from, say, /applications, which only loads into memory
when you access /applications. My machine just crashes a lot period, don't
know whether it has anything to do with icons. Every couple of months I
just do a select all and dump everything (except for disks and the trash)
into a folder. Doing the job with a shotgun, or however the saying goes.
That does bring up an interesting quesiton though--when I had macsbug
installed on here, one of the most frequent causes of crashing appeared to
be a call to SetIconDevice. Anyone have any ideas? I have plenty of
stdlogs around, if anyone has any theories.

No reason why you shouldn't. I saw this one slashdot a while ago...Using,
IIRC, a long antenna, a signal amplifier, and a parabolic dish, a couple
guys broadcast an 802.11b signal around twenty-five miles. It was
line-of-sight only, but that's still pretty damn cool. I don't have a link
handy, but you can probably find it at slashdot's archives.

This happens to me quite frequently, as I use a 15" flat panel (1024x768) at
home, and the built-in (800x600) 12.1" screen elsewhere. A resolution
switch messes up your icons, because if you switch to a lower resolution,
you lose the right part of the screen where all of the icons are--hence,
Finder moves them so that you can still see them. I don't know why
force-quitting the finder works, if it does, but your problem is definitely
with resolution settings, especially if you use an external monitor.

Quick fix? If you're not like me (ie, you don't have so many icons on your
desktop that you can't see the pattern) you can use applescript to fix it.
Move all of the icons slightly out of position, open up applescript, tell it
to record your actions. Drop all of the icons where you would like them to
go, then stop recording. Save the script. Now, every time this happens,
you can simply run the script and it will reset the positions of all items
that were on the desktop when you created the script. Icons added since
then, you may add to the script, or simply move back manually.

Hope this helps.

Re: Service Manuals on freehost.nu gone? News on Sight

2002-04-23 Thread Matt Reiff

Someone a while ago gave me a service manual for a firewire G3 PB. I
checked the URL and it gave a link to apple's FTP site. Last I checked,
then, file read was permitted but file scan was not--in other words, if you
knew the name of a file you could read it, but you were not permitted to get
a file listing. That for what it's worth, I don't know if it's the same
thing you guys are talking about. That said, how does one obtain an apple
service manual--by becoming an apple service provider?
