Got it! So maybe once I pick up a PCMCIA card and firewire cable

I am pretty sure that is for IPV6 to IPv4 network translations.

Re: DHCP problems

2005-10-18 Thread Steve Fuller
sorry, I haven't been following the entire thread. What about
assigning IP addresses instead of DHCP? All you would have to do
is give each computer a valid IP on the same subnet.

Because it's an ongoing pain in the butt if you have ANY coming
and going of systems...

For laptops that move between two or more sites with different
address ranges it is so much easier to use DHCP. Especially if you
are using WiFi sites on the run.

Personally,

I use locations for that. I have one with a static IP for work, one
with a static IP for home (same one if I'm using wireless or wired),
and then one with DHCP assigned to wireless or wired that I use when
I'm on the road. Not that there's anything wrong with using DHCP at
home, but I thought I'd toss this out as a way around using DHCP
everywhere.

Re: lombard DVD decoder

The DVD Decoder board IS NOT supported under OS X. This piece is used

The decoder is not the same thing as the DVD optical mechanism. The
Lombard I gave to my son to use boots into OS 9 just for DVD playing
(and an occasional game of Crystal Quest).

Did they have you ping a host via name or via IP address? If they
gave you just an address to ping, then it sounds like DNS isn't
working properly. I'd go through and verify your IP address and DNS

Re: DVD for a Tiger Install in a WS PowerBook

Steps I'd try (based on things I've read in other places)

Start another Mac on your network in target disk mode (if possible).
Plug that mac into your WS via firewire
Mount the DVD in a DVD drive on that target disk booted Mac
Install

Anyone have any workarounds for this dilemma? I have a Firewire PC

What about over a network? I have other Macs available.

I am open to suggestions.

there didn't seem anything I could do about it. (Now that the

That's interesting. I could understand them not covering the

I wonder if that could be challenged under the Magnuson-Moss act.
That one comes up a lot when a car dealer will try and invalidate
a car warranty claim based on the fact that an aftermarket part is
installed on the car (one that does not have anything to do with

One problem is that changing a hard drive on an iBook involves
taking apart most of the laptop.

If the installation is done by Apple, or an Apple certified
technician, this should not be a problem. They still warranteed my
powerbook after they replaced the hinge clutch assembly, and that
involved taking a good portion of my 17 PB apart I'm sure. I can
understand voiding applecare if I replace the drive, but not if an

probably not.

The SuperDrive installed in your powerbook will only read or write
DVD-R or DVD-RW media. It will not read DVD+R or DVD+RW disks, no

If you want to read +R or +RW disks on your powerbook, you will need

I would use the crossover cable between the two notebooks, and then

either system?

Does one of the machines have to be a master and the other a slave?

Does one of the operating systems have to have control over the other?

Re: security on wireless router

2005-07-07 Thread Steve Fuller
Thanks for your reply - I am ditching the DLink Router. It has
caused no end of problems for me. Initially it was working great
but within a couple of days, it just became really erratic.
Sometimes it would work fine - then I would have no connection at
all and trying to restore it was a pain in the neck.

So, I am returning it and hoping to find something a little more
reliable. Of course, the Airport Express would be the easiest to
deal with but it just costs so much.

Factor in your two days of frustration, plus the time to return the
dlink. Maybe the Airport Extreme or Airport Express might not look so
expensive.

Re: Apple to switch to Intel chips

2005-06-09 Thread Steve Fuller

On Jun 6, 2005, at 1:13 PM, Dean wrote:

Did anyone see this yet?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050606/ap_on_hi_te/apple_chips

I saw this on Monday. From an end user standpoint, I really don't
think it's going to be that much of an impact. My interaction with
the computer is not at the chip level, but at the OS level. From what
I saw during the Steve-note, that really isn't going to change much.
The box he ran the demo on looked and ran like a PPC based Mac. As
long as I get the benefits of OS X, and the machines are relatively
fast, and stable, I'm all for it. Especially if it means that Apple
can come up with machines that have better battery life, run cooler,
and/or run more quietly.

Developers are probably going to have more of a mixed reaction, but
from the reading that I've been doing, it appears that for many of
them, this will make porting applications to the Mac platform a lot
easier. One of the game manufacturers said that much of the work in
porting from the PC platform has to do with time it takes to convert
between the endianness of the platforms. A good description of what
this is can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endianness .

Short term, I think that this will definitely affect hardware sales

One side of me says that they will be down because people will be

a lot of people will want one of the last PPC based machines.

Re: 802.11g PB, 802.11b router- slow??

2005-06-05 Thread Steve Fuller

Broken router issues aside, Linksys sux. Time and again, I've seen
their older routers (built before the Cisco buyout) provide poor
performance. The problem is either they use really slow processors
( 66-MHz mostly) or their wireless implementation sux. Newer
Linksys products are better. I've never seen the problem with
Netgear etc.

My Pre-Cisco buy Linksys wap11 worked fine and delivered good
performance with my 17 powerbook.

Re: iBooksG4 vs. PowerBooksG4

2005-05-29 Thread Steve Fuller
The Aluminium is not portable: too delicate, while the iBook is
rugged and sturdy. Last week I travelled in Slovakia for a couple
of presentations and the iBook was at home in the Jansport back
pack, stuffed with other things (ordinary backpack, not a laptop
one). The case is scratched, but you do not notice it: I cannot
think of what had happened to the Aluminium (I have seen so many
Titanium cases simply destroyed after a couple of trips).

I think that it depends on how you travel and how often. I have
traveled with my AlBook now for two years (I make 3 or 4 flights per
year) and I have never had an issue with it. Granted, It's not in a
backpack, but in a standard laptop bag. It has a couple of scratches
on the case, but it's handled the trips just fine. The plastic case
will handle abuse a bit better than the aluminum one tho.

Re: 1.25ghz PB Hangs in Tiger

2005-05-28 Thread Steve Fuller

Anyone else having fits with Tiger on the Al Books? I've been getting
hangs - maybe once a day - that lock everything. No mouse, no
keyboard, nothing. I have to use a ctrl-cmd-power to reboot, no
matter how long I wait.

No problem with 10.4.1 on my 17. No hang or anything else...

I'll echo Laruent's findings as well. 10.4.1 on a 1st gen 17 albook.
My suggestion would be to remove the ram stick and see if that causes
the issues to stop.

The firewire hub is powered. It's a Belkin 7 port. I've had no issues

My USB hub is some cheap one I picked up at a local computer store.
It's used for my mouse, keyboard, scanner, and photo printer. My USB
ports are all USB 1.1 on my powerbook, so I didn't bother with a more
expensive hub. No issues with it either. All of the devices are low

cheap USB hubs, so that's why I ask ... not sure which brands are

What kind of stand are you using for your PowerBook? I may just
build a small shelf to put mine on so it's at the same level as my
CRT.

I have some wire stand that I had laying around the house. I've been
looking at one of the Griffin iCurves, but I haven't seen one in

Hey, Brian ...
Are you saying you're using the tuner on a VCR to input TV signal
into your PowerBook? If so, what software are you using to view
it? ...
Yeah, I can see the wires getting out of hand here, too ... I do
have wireless network, but wouldn't it be nice to have wireless
everything :-)

If he has the same Dell 20 display that I have, the monitor has
inputs for DVI, VGA, Svideo and component input (RCA). You hook
everything up to the LCD and then switch between inputs, or you can
do Picture in Picture with some. On mine I have my Windows PC hooked
to DVI, my G4 Cube hooked to VGA, and a Tivo hooked to the Svideo. I
can have any of those up full screen, or I can have either computer
up full screen and the tivo displayed in a smaller window in one of
the corners. It's quite handy. :)

Re: Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system

2005-05-23 Thread Steve Fuller
I love how the PowerBook works with the extended display and have
been surprised at how cool it's been running with it... seemingly,
cooler than using the PowerBook alone, though I can't imagine why
that is, unless it's been my lap and not the machine generating the
heat all this time :-/ ... I plan to run an external Firewire DVD-
RW (the PB has a combo drive) and an external USB2 hard drive for
storage of customer jobs, and have extended AppleCare ...

If anyone here is using a PowerBook like this, I'd love to hear how
it's working for you and any problems or surprises you've
encountered. Are you using USB or Firewire hubs? External drives?

I';ve been using my 17 PB like this for 2 years now, using it as a
replacement for a P4 PC running windows. I personally use a firewire
hub and a usb hub to minimize the cable clutter, and because I had
some minor issues with device chaining (I had an external DVD-RW
drive, Isight, and 3 external firewire hard drives, plus an ipod all
hooked up at once). It's worked out quite well for me. I have a small
stand that my powerbook goes on. I leave the long wall cable plugged
in, and attach / detach the AC brick from that as needed when I move
the powerbook around. I don't use an external monitor with mine, but
that would certainly be an option that would work well.

Biggest issues for me were finding a comfortable height/distance for
the PB, and getting the cables ran so that my desk was not cluttered
with them. Other than that, it's worked out well for the last two
years. My PB travels to / from work with me every day so I'm hooking/
unkooking cables a lot, but it's basically 3 cables (firewire, USB,
and power) that get plugged or unplugged.

Re: New Hard drive question

I'm considering buying a new hard drive from zip zoom fly. They
describe the drives as bare, not coming with cables, etc. I intend
to put the drive in my Pismo, which currently has the original

You'll have to remove the old drive from the drive carrier in your
Pismo and place it on the new drive (4 screws maybe) and then plug it
in. You shouldn't need any extra cables or screws.

At this point, Apple has made notes in their system that the notebook

I'd try and source a logic board for it and fix it yourself. That or

I'll probably clear everything out backup my home directory, and
format my drive and do a clean install. I know there are some things

Re: Can I monitor my network?

2005-03-21 Thread Steve Fuller
You might want to look at something like snort or Ethereal for
monitoring your network for starters. Both will need to be compiled for
OS X, and will require X windows to be installed to use their front
ends. They are not easy to pick up on by any stretch of the
imagination.

Another idea would be to install something like nmap (another command
line program) on your powerbook. You can use some of it's commands to
locate all hosts on your network. For example:

nmap -sP 192.168.0.1/24 will ping all 254 addresses on the 192.168.1
network (a common network configured internally for people that are
using NAT internet gateways and the like). It will return a list of all
of the active IP addresses that it finds.

All three of the previously mentioned apps are open source. You will
more than likely need to have the developer tools installed to make
them work. A background in networking will help with deciphering the
output of Ethereral and snort.

It's important to note, that even though you may not have any
applications open on your Mac that you will probably see some network
activity on your network (even when you are not logged in). This could
be background processes running on the machines on your network, or
other miscellaneous network traffic. Activity lights that light up just
when they see activity on a certain interface are not necessarily an
indication of any heinous activity occurring on your network. (Although
it never hurts to check).

Probably but you'll most likely need some kind of SCSI-2 to SCSI

However, there are adapters that you can usually find cheap on eBay...
I am fairly sure that the only difference between scsi and scsi-2 is
transfer rate. 68 pin is usually wide-scsi, and that would require a
68-50 pin adapter. The SE/30 should have been able to see that scsi-2

All of this could be eliminated with a properly designed docking port

Or can anyone recommend a retrieval company and how much does it cost?
I have practical experience with OnTrack Data Systems out of Minnesota.
I'll start with if you have to ask how much, you probably can't afford

critical data for a business, so price was pretty much no object. That

Hope this helps.

Re: Power Supplies --- Mac and PC

2005-02-07 Thread Steve Fuller
I noticed on Kensingtons Web-Site that are ones for PCs with multiple
Power Tips and a different one for Macs, but not both.
I've had great luck with the Juice adapter from IGo. It's an AC/DC
adapter with multiple interchangable tips. Mine came with two tips for
various powerbooks (old and new), as well as tips that will fit various
PC notebooks.

Re: Apple Mail

2004-12-24 Thread Steve Fuller
Your also telling 100 plus workers using Macs, Apple Mail is a
failure. What does that say to your Mac users when it comes time to
buy a computer and most people use them off work for, emailing and
surfing. Well the tech guy at our company does not like Apple Mail
says it does not do things right, Internet Explorer is not being
updated, so guess we better get a Wintel.
Well if you want integrated email, calendaring, to do lists, etc all in
one application, then yes, Apple Mail is a failure, and Entourage is
the choice to make. This is what a lot of BUSINESSES want or demand
from their email product. I'm one of the tech guys at my company, and
I'm also the one primarily responsible for email. Our messaging
infrastructure is based on Exchange, and Apple's mail is not the client
for me to use in that environment. OTOH, for my personal email at home,
I use Apple Mail, even though I have Entourage installed on my
PowerBook. I love Apple and their products, but in the business world
it's the best tool for the best job. Apple Mail is a great basic email
program, and personally I'd like it to continue to focus on that market
rather than try and become an Entourage killer.

If your tech guy is basing his techology platform decisions solely off
of the fact that he does not like Apple Mail, and that IE isn't being
updated, then he should be fired, and you should find a competent
replacement.

2004-12-23 Thread Steve Fuller
I had the same problem when I upgraded my G4/400 to 10.3. It's a
documented problem and the solution is somewhere on the Apple site. It
is caused by having an old version of itunes on your HD. Delete any
copies of itunes on your drive and try again. It should work.
Good suggestion, but I think that he said he blew the drive away during
the install. I would see if there is any non-apple ram in the machine.
If there is, remove it and see if that helps any.

Apple also turns the machine around the same day they get it. Meaning
that
if they receive it in the morning it will be shipped back out to you
the
same day fixed. The total turn around time can be as little as 72
hours.
It's freaking beautiful.
Agreed. I shipped mine to Apple on a Wednesday, they received it
Thursday AM, repaired the hinge assembly, and shipped it out to me the
same day. I had it back by 10 AM Friday morning. As I was away on
vacation on Wednesday and Thursday, I really didn't lose any use of my
laptop, except for Thursday night. Color me impressed.

i installed os 10.2 without a problem.
i remember reading recently about several listas who have installed

A lot of times I think these types of install issues have been traced

Re: OSX.2.8 and Toast on Powerbook G4 Ti 867

2004-10-20 Thread Steve Fuller
Question 1.
I assume I cannot burn DVDs even with Toast software?
With Toast and an external DVD recordable drive you could. You could
also burn some types of DVDs with an external DVD burner and a hack for
the iLife Suite.

Question 2.
Do I need Toast in addition to all the CD burning software in the
MacOS 10.2.8?
For burning your own data to CD, no. That being said, I find that the
whole process of burning data to CD in the finder is slower as it makes
an image of your data, and then burns that image to CD. Toast skips the
image making process and just burns the data out.

Question 3.
Does anyone else have a similar setup and care to comment on Toast?
I have used Toast 5 on my 17 PB under both 10.2.x and 10.3. It works
fine under both. I personally did not find anything in 6 that makes me
feel compelled to spend $79 on the upgrade (especially since I bought 5
about 2 months before 6 came out).

Question 4.
Can you burn a movie on a CD? a video CD?
There is a standard called a Video CD (as well as Super Video CD). The
basic differences are picture size and quality. Toast 5 only will burn
video CDs. I think Toast 6 can burn Super Video CDs...

Hope this helps

Re: How about iPhoto? was Re: Reinstalling MacOS X - Backing up

2004-10-15 Thread Steve Fuller
Best way I know of is: throw away the current iPhoto library and empty
trash. Copy your old iPhoto library somewhere on your HD apart from
the 'pictures' folder on your home folder.

Launch iPhoto. It should say: I can't find the iPhoto library, do you
want to import blah blah.

Say yes and navigate to the old iPhoto library and select it. iPhoto
should import the old library. To be really thorough, once that is
done, quit iPhoto. Then hold shift-command-option when relaunching it,
and iPhoto will rebuild the library. If all goes well, you should end
up with your old library exactly as it was.
This method worked quite well for me the 3 or 4 times that I have done
it.

Re: Anyone here use virtual PC?

2004-10-13 Thread Steve Fuller
Are you seriously telling me that you think M$ will sell a version of
VPC that will allow faultless running of Linux etc ?
I am of the opinion that they will. They may not go out of their way to
actively support it, but I don't believe that they will actively make
something not work. Maybe I'm a bit of an optimist, but look at it this
way. If it doesn't run Linux, or something besides an MS operating
system, they get no sales of the product for that particular user. I'd
think they'd rather have a small piece of the pie rather than nothing.

Re: Anyone here use virtual PC?

2004-10-13 Thread Steve Fuller
The main question is WHY did M$ grab VPC? There isn't any reason
except that VPC's ability to run non-M$ operating systems was a
threat. Connectix had a version of VPC that ran under Windoze and the
only way M$ could kill or control that was to grab VPC away from
Connectix. It is also instructive to note that M$ did not hire the VPC
programmers; just a few token ones to help with the transition.
Looking at Microsoft's products that are coming up, one of the things
they are releasing is a server virtualization product that allows you
to run 4 or 5 separate smaller instances of Windows on one larger box
to aid with server consolidation, especially in shops with large
amounts of legacy applications. Connectix was working on a lot of the
same technology, and I would guess that was the main reason that they
grabbed the product: it gave them the bulk of the work in a cheaper way
than it would to do the development from scratch, as well as a bunch of
patents.

Unfortunately, the first thing M$ supposedly did when they got their
hands on VPC was to disable support for non-M$ operating systems. No

They will install, but you will not get any support from MS if you have

My understanding is that most of the video stuff didn't make it into
VPC7 (at least with this initial release).
This is intentional from Micro$oft in order to bring Virtual PC to
the same level as the rest of the Micro$oft range of products;
loads of hype about new features, pull half of them just before
release.
Since it wasn't a huge amount of time between when they purchased the
code from Connectix, do you suppose it maybe had to do with something
as simple as a time crunch and not some ulterior motive. I'm not a
Microsoft fanboy, but people that go out of their way to assign
something to some ulterior motive just amaze me.

Understandable. One of the things that I am waiting for as well.
If you have VPC ready to ship but are waiting for SP2 to be released,
there's still no reason why you can't release the Windows 2000 version
or the version without an OS.
I disagree there, if for no other reason that they wanted to test
compatibility with SP2 before they released it. I think that made
sense. It's the same binary with a different OS image file.

And they advertise VPC 6 as only working with Win2000 and WinXP, when
in fact it will work with 95 and 98 as well.
Agreed it will work, but 95 and 98 aren't what they consider supported
OSes for the most part. Marketers suck ;)

ps - btw I fully expect that Longhorn will have some kind of
integrated VPC (ala Carbon) if Microsoft follows through on their
plan to break all existing Windows programs for it...
There are products in beta that let you run multiple virtual servers on
top of Windows 2003. I can see them integrating some of that, but then
again, they may want to charge extra for that feature set, like they do
now with terminal services.

Not really. I know of people using VPC to run Linux or some other OS

Make sure you install the VPC extensions into your Windows virtual

Hi have a 900mhz ibook (white) with OSX (panther). It has an internal

 I just bought ilife'04 and want to burn DVD's. I'm sure I have to/and
probably want to go the external firewire enclosure route. Can
someone please tell
me how I would go about this.
Here's what *I* did.
A) Purchased a firewire case,
B) Purchased a standard Pioneer DVD burner (the 8x model) from
newegg.com (around $75 shipped). Pioneer is the OEM for many of the
Apple SuperDrives.
C) Set the drive's jumper to master and put the drive in the case.
D) Plugged it into my powerbook.
E) Followed the instructions at
http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/personal_site/mac_guide/pages/15-
burn_idvd_other.html
F) Burned away

Re: shutting down PBs at night

2004-09-14 Thread Steve Fuller
While more often than not I leave my iMac on at night, I always turn
off my Powerbook. I guess it just seems more vulnerable left on all
night, for some reason. In fact, until recently, I'd carefully pack
it and all of its stuff back in the softside briefcase I bought for
it. Now I often leave it, turned off and with lid closed, where I
used it last (on the couch, on the footstool, on the bed, by the iMac,
on the dining table...). Do you guys turn off your PBs at night?
Mine is either plugged in and sleeping, or sitting on the couch or in
the bag sleeping. I usually leave it running all weekend on the laptop
stand in my office as I'm on it quite a bit, or I have processes that I
run overnight (iDVD encode/record and the like) My PB only gets shut
off if I take an airplane trip, or if I have to reboot for a security
update from Apple. It hasn't caused any issues over the last 1.5 years.

Re: RAM Check

2004-09-12 Thread Steve Fuller
We keep hearing about frequent crashes and RAM. Well, every
now and then I get a flurry of these things. I wonder if its my RAM.
I was wondering--is there ANY utility that can REALLY test your RAM?
When I was back in the computer resale arena, we had a hardware based
SIPP/SIMM/DIMM tester. We used that on every memory module that came
back through the door that a customer said was bad or causing their
machine to crash or in any case where we thought the ram was suspect.
I would guess that with the days of the full service, locally owned
computer store disappearing, and margins getting thinner, most shops
won't have one of these, let alone one that would test laptop memory.
Too bad, it was a handy thing.

Re: extreme prices for non-extreme Airport cards...

2004-09-07 Thread Steve Fuller
There is in fact Ethernet wireless bridges which someone will be bound
to point out. They may work but they aren't all that small and need a
wall plug. Really great for the old Powerbook on the go ;-) Will S
FWIW, I have a USB to wireless Ethernet bridge on my son's (non-Mac) PC
at home. It's powered off of the USB port and it works fine for his web
surfing and java/flash game playing fixes.
