That's either incredibly ignorant, or embarrassingly asinine. I've
counted no less than five rather politely-worded admonitions concerning
"test posts" in the past day, and now this...

Please, if you're gonna' "test-post" the list, use some stealth and
cloak the "test" in some wording that someone else might want to read. A
joke of the day, if nothing else.

C'mon, is it really that hard just to pay attention?

Not on a Wallstreet, which I think is what the OP was asking.

The drive mechanism in a Wallstreet isn't removable from it's casing in the
same way as Lombard/Pismo ones.

Well, it means the hinges are broken. Nothing one can do about that except
replacing the hinges.

I bought a used Wallstreet off ebay for the price two new hinges would have
cost me and had the complete screen replaced. As I had a 14" screen and the
bought Wallstreet only had a 13" screen I now oughta have the only
Wallstreet which lets you select screen resolutions in the Monitor control
panel... - so the technician told me.

A 20 GB hard disk is working just fine inside my Wallstreet.

2006-02-01 Thread James Sanderson
I was able to get a Pismo on eBay for $200+s/h. I did spend money to
add memory and move to a 500 MHz processor. I think that I got
'lucky' because the comp's description included a pink-light-on-start-
up-but -goes-away-after-a-seconds issue. The latter hasn't bothered
me in the least. I've priced out the replacement. I think I'll be
with this one for a while.
I was happy with the WS for basic internet surfing and note-taking.
When I decided I wanted to use Keynote for several school
presentation, the WS became obsolete.

DVD-ROM modules with their accompanying PC-Cards are about as common
as chickens with molars. If you can get a working set for the price
mentioned, you are probably lucky.

Yep. Bad hinges are a well known "feature" of the G3 Series machines.
The only real fix seems to be replacement. I have seen stainless steel
ones being sold, but too many $$ for me. A stack of books behind the
display is much cheaper!

I have a 40gig Western Digital In a WS/300. Seems to work well, but
I haven't had it all that long and don't use them machine all that
much.

Yup.

Should be a drive set to Master, and if you use a different drive the front
bezel won't fit.

There is an adapter board on the back of the drive. Under the adapter
is the standard laptop drive connector. I used a Samsung combo drive

Yes, they are all IDE or ATAPI in the case of CD-ROM/DVD drives. Maybe not a

How do you know the LG model from any of the others?

On mine, i was definitively able to tell by disassembling the unit.

Using a #0 phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the
plastic flap on the back, then the two insanely tiny screws on either
side of the unit. (notice that the two that go through plastic are
about 2mm longer than the others)

You can then lift the unit out of the carrier. The label is on the

I saw the connector on the back, and it seemed to be the same

It tells you in Apple System Profiler, or on the drive caddy it says

Re: Hi! (and Pismo DVD-ROM issue)

2006-01-31 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters

Hi all. I just joined.

I recently came into posession of a broken G3 Powerbook "Pismo". It
seemed relatively complete (no hard drive, no keyboard, no psu, but
cpu, ram, dvd-rom, battery). I borrowed a 3400 from work, and tried
out the pismo with it, but nothing.

I completely disassembled it, down to the power connector, to find
that it had sheared from the board:

http://www.umlautllama.com/gallery/pismo/IMG_0562

so I desoldered, straightned, and reconnected it:
http://www.umlautllama.com/gallery/pismo/IMG_0566

I plugged it all back together, along with a 20gig spare drive I
had, and it gave me the ? Folder. YAY!

I just got done installing OS 9 on a 1 gig partition, and OS 10.2 on
the remaining partition. It all works really well.

(I do still need a shield for the ram/cpu area, keyboard, and power supply)

I just finally found my 10.4 DVD-R, and was about to install that
over 10.2, to find out that for some reason, the DVD-ROM drive (the
stock apple one) doesn't seem to read DVD-R discs... or at least, it
doesn't read DVD-R discs that I've burnt.

Is this a common problem, or am I doing something wrong on my end?

-s

(I've also got a 15" TiBook 500 (Rev A), and my current machine, a

purposes, my machines.)

Nice rework on the sound/AC board.

From what I gather the lombard/pismo DVDs are getting flaky by now.
Luckily, you can replace the mechanisms with a number of other
devices you can find on Ebay. This is a good reference page:

I don't know about DVD drives, but I've got an old Toshiba CD-ROM that

I only used it long enough to verify that it works, before I swapped

Had exactly this on a machine on Friday, bad logic board, weird thing was it
would pop back when the machine warmed.

Couldn't see nay damage on the board so suspected broken track nor connector

just tried this today to no avail. Also the connector for the video cable
(on the motherboard) seems fine. The cables are attached to the display
assembly and the inverter, so they can't be the culprit, as both the
display assembly and the inverter work fine on another lombard.

well spotted, thanks Vicky! Unfortunately, Its' long since I've lost my OS

Re: more Lombard display and DVD issues

2006-01-19 Thread Caleb Cupples
It can and it can't. It will play a DVD, but it's so laggy and skips so
much that I wouldn't recommend it. VLC is great on a G4 'Book, but not
a Lombard. In fact, the only reason I have VLC is that 'systm', is
either Ogg Theora or H.264 and I'm on X.2.8, so that rules out
Quicktime 7.

Boot into 9 and use Apple DVD Player.

First good to see the books being salvaged.

1) Display is dark (image is there, but no back illumination; also
S-video
out works fine to TV). I have ruled out the backlight (replaced a
know-good

display assemblywith good backlight) and the inverter. This leaves a
possible fault on the motherboard, as the cables are part of the
display

assembly. Does anyone know whereabouts on the motherboard to look for
possible damage (hoping to find visible damage, such a blown
capacitor or

so). Or what other bits could be responsible for such behaviour?

Have you tried disconnecting the monitor and cleaning the contacts as
they could have a build up of dirt on them. this could prevent a
contact and give a scrambled pic. or no pic at all also have you
checked the cables for any damage or cracks in the strip.

2) This is a 400 MHz with DVD drive. Booting in OS9, system
profiler informs
me that DVD decoder is present. However, when I try to play a DVD,
I get the
message saying that this computer can't play DVDs. As anyone seen
and/or

solved this?

To me that says the system was installed on a book with out the dvd
decoder or drive present. for example a wallstreet. Then the drive
swapped into the lombard.

sticky drawer on Pismo DVD drive

2006-01-03 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I've been trying to sort out a Lombard for my father in law and I have
a 6x DVD drive that seems to work OK once you get the drive closed.
The drawer binds as I try and close it, sometimes I have to open it and
clse it several times before I can get it to close all the way.

Once it's closed it works fine.
There seems to be a lot of friction in the slides so either something's
jumped the track or something needs lubrication.
If I can't find anything obvoiusly out of line I'm thinking of a little
silicon lube on the slides.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Well, on the Lombard, it's between the S-Video and VGA outputs. Either
way, it's still really easy to work on a Lombard or Pismo, as long as
you know what you're doing.

Does one need a special screw driver to open the keyboard or do you

So long as you're careful adding RAM is easy.

nah, it's just a little straight head. You need a teensy phillips
screwdriver, though to get at the RAM.

To get to the memory bank or slot under the processor, you have to pull the
processor daughtercard. The connector that holds the daughtercard to the
motherboard is in the lower right corner. You have to pull the daughtercard
straight up so that you don't damage any of the multiple pins that the
connector houses. Once removed, it's fairly easy to put the memory. Then,
you have to put back the daugthercard, which is a little more daunting.
Considering how the connector and all the pins seem to be fragile, you have
to push quite hard to make sure the dauthercard is plugged correctly. If you
are careful in aligning the daughtercard to the motherboard, you should be
fine. More instructions can be found here
<http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/6.0.0.html>.

Re: Pismo frozen with DVD

2005-12-30 Thread Caleb Cupples
All you need to do to get under the keyboard is pull the two little
tabs at the top back and lift up. (The tabs are located between esc and
F1 & F8 and F9) After that, simply remove the heat shield. The lower
bank of RAM is under the processor, AFAIK. However, I've never used a
Pismo, so I'm running from my Lombard experience. The keyboard is the
same, though.

Re: DVD stuck in Pismo

2005-12-30 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

I was watching a DVD via DVD Player in Jag on my Pismo and it froze
with the spinning beach ball. Now I can't even force quit and I can't
eject the DVD by dragging to trash or with my finger on the drive. I
can't shut down even. I try not to use the Pismo for playing DVDs just
because of this kind of poor functionality, but now I have a trapped
DVD disk in the drive.

On my Pismo's DVD drive there are two eject buttons.
The longer one is a switch that has the same effect as dragging the
icon to the trash and only works when the drive is powered up.
The other button is round and just big enough to press with a pen tip,
it is mechanical and will work even if the drive is removed from the
powerbook.

Good luck

Re: Lombard not mounting discs: Was (Pismo frozen with DVD)

2005-12-30 Thread Caleb Cupples
I'm looking at a superdrive to replace the DVD-ROM in my Lombard, but I
want to replace the battery and get my home setup for wireless, first.
I found that blowing the dust out of the connectors can help a little,
but mine probably sat for a couple of months before I got it.

Before I forget, does anyone have any information on the Sonnet Aria
wireless cards? I'm looking at one to go in the Lombard, when I replace
the battery with a NewerTech of some sort.

Well, thanks for the suggestion,
Caleb

Caleb,

I was eyeing that and was going to insert a paper clip into if other
options didn't work.
For me, watching a DVD is always a little sketchy on my good old
Pismo. I think if I forward chapters or fast forward, it's prone to
freezing up.

with the spinning beach ball. Now I can't even force quit and I can't
eject the DVD by dragging to trash or with my finger on the drive. I
can't shut down even. I try not to use the Pismo for playing DVDs just

Is another level of killing this? It's running on the battery.

Either would work great. You may however need to mod the expansion bay's

DVD drive problem in 12inch PB

2005-12-23 Thread MJT

Hello
Has anyone had any trouble with the superdrive not writing to DVD-r
discs.

If I write more than 3.6 gig to the disc it will fail.
If it does write it is very slow half an hour. The discs I am using
are 8x Verbatim. I can use the discs in my Pismo ( a dual layer DVD
writer in it ) and they do not fail and also in an external DVD writer.

The 12inch PB works fine with an external DVD writer.
The PB is only 2 months old, it has had the drive replaced once by
the dealer and it is still doing the same thing.

This is the drive MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835E:

Why bother with eBay when new superdrives are available from regular
retail channels for (usually) less than going eBay prices?

zipzoomfly has the Pioneer DVR-K05 for under US$90.

Can you still play DVD movies with it? I know Patchburn lets you make non
Apple burners work with Apple tools, but I wasn't sure if you lost the
ability to play DVDs by going with a 3rd party drive.

I base this fear on the fact that I can't play DVDs using a 3rd party DVD
drive on my iMac DV (its internal DVD drive has eject problems, so I try
not to use it much). However, I freely admit that I don't know if the
failure is because it is a 3rd party drive, or because it is external.

As such, I'm just looking for a confirmation that the Pismo, when using a
3rd party drive to replace the original internal DVD drive, will still
allow you to play DVD movies. If I can get that confirmation, I'll take
the jump and get myself a DVD/CD-RW drive and make the swap.

I replaced the dying DVD-ROM in my wife's Pismo with a Samsung combo
drive from a Dell laptop. I swapped the internals in the caddy and
used Patchburn to fully support burning. A little fine sanding and
superglue on the bezel and you can hardly tell it's not the original.

>Has anyone done this? Bought a drive and swapped the internals into the

>when you do that?

My Pismo and Lombard (which share the same optical drive bay design, and
problems with same, BTW) have both been upgraded to dual-layer (2.4X) and
single-layer (8X) DVD +/- reading, writing and rewriting.

(My Pismo has a slot loader, Panasonic UJ-845S or Pioneer DVR-A05; my
Lombard has a tray loader, Pioneer DVR-K05. Patchburn is necessary to
support these drives).

Speed is limited to 2X writes 100 percent of the time, and 4X writes
about 50 percent of the time, on account of basic defects in the media
bay's design (lack of effective shielding and grounding).

Nevertheless, I have burned DVDs, and viewed these, and imported all
kinds of media using these enhanced drives.

Frankly, I prefer a Firewire external DVD for burning, which can do 8X or
better all day and night. But, the internal drive is otherwise more
convenient.

Most original Mac optical drives cannot play DVD+Rs at all, and DVD-R
playing is sometimes chancy; but with the replacement drive these problem
were eliminated.

So, within the speed constraints mentioned, I have found the Pismo (and
also the Lombard) to be excellent multi-media portables.

Again, the problems will be encountered in burning; not in ripping,
authoring or viewing.

2005-12-08 Thread Robert Alcorn

Chris,
I bought an external case (firewire, usb) 50 bucks or less and then
bought a standard internal IDE/ATA
cd-r 52x16x24 at compusa or staples for about 40 or 50 bucks, look for
sales. Put them together, plug it into your pismo and there you have an
external burner. It works great. I even have a usb only cd-r external
box that I use all the time. I use toast 5.0 or 5.2 lite or titanium
for the program. Do not forget to install the driver (toast) first.
Also great for an external HD use. Good Luck.

My Pismo has a slot-loading drive from a newer TiBook in it (I
happened upon the drive). The drive itself fit right onto the carrier
for the Pismo drive. The bezel doesn't fit, so it looks a little
unfinished, someday I may get around to hacking it so it does fit.

Everything works, burning disks and watching DVD's.

xlr8yourmac.com has a wealth of info about this, too.

No, the G5's use Pioneer DVR109's for "Superdrives" (although I
think that they are up to DVR 110's now). That drive will burn both +

Pismo DVD formats

2005-11-26 Thread Frank Cornew

Tony:

Am using a GoVideo VR3930 precisely for this. Probably not available
any more, but newer models should be good.

Extremely happy with the unit.

It has a firewire (aka iLink or IEEE 1392?) interface, so I can copy
directly from my sony camcorder, and the VR3930 controls the camera.

I haven't attempted to hook up directly to the Pismo.
Uses DVD-R and DVD-RW, think that the mac line currently uses DVD+R,
shouldn't be an issue with finished disks. Just means that you will
need stocks of different media if you get a more current mac. They
play in my Pismo, but my Pismo drive is a bit flaky so I occasionally
get dirty disk aborts. (further comment, listies?). Am about to
replace the (matsushita) drive in the Pismo EB with a burner soon.

Reviews mentioned quality issues with GoVideo units. Believe they
were directed at a previous model, and this one was put on the market
in early 2004. At any rate, I had an opportunity to buy this one at
Costco at a very good price, and I haven't regretted it.

I am finishing up transcribing 350 VHS tapes to DVD and will then
proceed to attack a stack of mini DV tapes. Some tapes play better
out of a panasonic deck that seems to be more tolerant of tracking
issues than the one

One feature I really like about this thing is the ability to
automatically skip all the ads on a commercial DVD and go directly to
the movie. Very nice with children's videos.

CD-DVD Module problem

2005-11-14 Thread Ed Zelinsky

List members,

In trying to eject a non playing CD I accidently blew out the tiny
button on the front of the module- that goes in my Pismo model G-book .
Now the delicate latch doesn't grab and the unit won't close. Has
anybody ever run into this? Also, if I start unscrewing the front of
the module to get a look will it lead to problems? Finally, is there
someplace I could send it to have someone fix it?

Thank goodness I had a back up unit but I just bought this module.
Argh-h-h...

Thanks,

Ed Z

Re: Recommended external DVD burner?

2005-11-07 Thread David Brostoff
MacWorld had reviews of 16X drives earlier this
year (you can google it or search directly on
macworld.com). The LaCie D2 16X DVD±RW was their
pick for value (Plextor had a faster, though much
more expensive drive).

Based on MacWorld and other sources, I bought the
LaCie and have been very satisfied. The unit is
very solidly built. I used Pricegrabber.com as a
convenient way of finding a low price.

For media, I recommend Taiyo Yuden 8X (or 16X,
but only for non-critical data; and remember that
8X DVD is about 6 times faster than 8X CD) on
Rima.com.

Recommended external DVD burner?

2005-11-07 Thread Howard Katz
Since my PB only has a Combo drive in it, I've been playing with the
idea of getting an external DVD writer, firewire of course. I know I
could upgrade the internal drive, but an external unit could be shared
with my roommate for use on his peecee. I'm interested in knowing
what others are using and recommendations of drives to look into, or
avoid.

Thanks!

Later..Howard

Did you try Mac the Ripper on it? I don't know if that'll properly

The ffmpegx converter can preview the .avi-- quicktime can't play it,
even with the correct plug-in installed. No surprise, I'm used to QT
not playing things.

the ffmpegx walk-thru for making a dVD says I should be able to
use .mov mpeg-4 or DVD (which makes a video_ts folder) for either
Tosst 5.2.3 (which is what I have) or iDVD (which I also have).

However, .mov mpeg-4 gives me a movie which plays white, although
sound is there. DVD, gives me a video_ts folder which is a black
movie, no vid or sound, but it's big, and does play, just is kinda
boring.

I moved the thing to my wife's Dell and got it onto DVD in 3 mouse
clicks, with freeware. Easy enough!

I'd love for this kind of thing to work easily on my Mac. should it
be easy?? Sure, if I capture on this Mac, video will work. I have
no digital camcorder, and I live in the real world, which means other
standard formats have to work.

I am 10.4.1, was with QT6.x, now am QT 7.0.3. I have the latest
ffmpegx, with the latest of the components it requires; I've gone
thru the walk-thru at the above site repeatedly, and waited literally
tens of hours for these things to get converted, only to have them
fail to be useful.

Thanks for pointers.

OK, I have another .avi file (the "Star Wreck: In the Perkinning"

I can't find the tool I need to turn the .avi file into something

Googling pulls up so much meta tag spam and commercial apps that I

What apps do I need to do what I want?

I'm on a G4/1.5GHz, OS 10.4, superdrive. I have both toats 5.2.3 and

Re: lombard DVD decoder

2005-10-16 Thread Robert Eye
I just went through this with a technician at my
workplace who received a hand-me-down Lombard. DVD
Player software will not install in a Lombard under OS
X and won't work if you manage to copy it over. Per
Apple:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106470

"Watching DVD discs in Mac OS 9

Other computers with DVD-ROM drives have hardware
decoders, which DVD Player 3.0 does not work with."

and

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=151943

"Mac OS X 10.3 Help

DVD Player is not installed on my computer

DVD Player is installed on computers that have a DVD
drive and support AGP or PCI graphics with a Rage 128
video card or better."

Nor does the DVD-Video PC Card work with the Lombard:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30632

"Note: The DVD-Video PC Card is not supported on the
Powerbook G3 Series 1999 (with Bronze translucent
keyboard)"

All the research I've done says that you can't play
DVD videos on a Lombard under OS X - you have to boot
into OS 9.

I'd love to be proven wrong (as would the tech at
work!).

Bob Eye

>The DVD Decoder board IS NOT supported under OS X. This piece is used
>for watching DVD movies. It works fine under OS 9.

A hardware decoder is necessary under 9, on the Lombard.

A software decoder is used under X, on the Lombard.

With a third-party video card on a PCI bus Mac, software decoding can be
used on 9 and it is always used on X.

As an example, the B&W G3, a PCI bus Mac, can be provided with a decoder
board on the Apple-supplied video card. This decoder is required under 9,
but it not used under X. Remove that decoder card and Apple DVD Player
will report "missing hardware" on 9, but will still work on X.

The same concept should be true of other PCI-type Macs, such as the 3400
(604e), 3500 (Kanga G3), 1998 (Wallstreet G3), 1999 (Lombard G3) and 2000
(Pismo G3).

The DVD Decoder board IS NOT supported under OS X. This piece is used
for watching DVD movies. It works fine under OS 9.

The decoder is not the same thing as the DVD optical mechanism. The
Lombard I gave to my son to use boots into OS 9 just for DVD playing
(and an occasional game of Crystal Quest).

Obviously, I volunteered more informantion than you asked for.

My use of my Lombard and Pismos is authoring (writing) and verifying
(reading) DVDs, almost equally.

DVD writing is reliable at 2X, usually reliably at 4X, and fails at
greater than 4X, and that failure is on account of the poor grounding
provided within the media bay itself. These same drives will not fail at
any speed if installed as directed, using an 80-wire/40-pin cable.

Re: lombard DVD decoder

2005-10-15 Thread PeterH5322

>So you can buy one of these mechanisms and swap it with the old one
>on the housing ?

Absolutely.

Just make sure it is a 12.7mm model and that it has a universal 50 pin
miniature connector, as all of them now do.

The Lombard/Pismo bezel will not fit any current drive, so there will be
a cosmetic issue, and the slot loader is probably the best, cosmetically
and operationally.

(The Pioneer DVR-K15, a variation of the previously mentioned DVR-K05, is
tray loading. The bezel from the stock Panasonic/Matshita definitely will
not fit the front of this drive :( ).

The DVR-K05/K15 is supported by 10.4 without PatchBurn; is supported by
10.3 with PatchBurn.

The Panasonic UJ-845S requires PatchBurn in both cases).

I believe the true super drive is a DVR-K04. The DVR-K05 is an upgraded
model which supports two-layer writing/rewriting.

The UJ-845S also supports two-layer writing/rewriting.

You may need to use PatchBurn if you have updated your media bay to
include a CD/DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive.

With the super drives which are in the distributor inventory right now,

LOL!

A brand-new, compatible super drive, which includes two-layer writing,
can be had for $105 or a tad more.

None will accept the old bezel, though.

Re: dvd for pismo

2005-10-05 Thread Steve Fuller

Ed,

I was going to buy a keyboard for our Lombard off of ebay. However, I
found one used for the same amount from someone that i knew.
Personally, for the $25 I've seen them go for on ebay, I think they'd
work fine. Other places still want $100 for them.
