Re: Pismo DVD RW drive query?

2005-12-23 Thread Dan K
Can anyone please confirm if either of these drives will work in a Pismo?
a Pioneer DVR-K05? or a Panasonic UJ-835-B?

Either would work great. You may however need to mod the expansion bay's
interface board to force the new drive to 'bus Master' status. See my
page for a detailed explanation:

DVD movies are fine on this one. Retail and DVD-R.

Thanks!

Now I'll pick up a drive off ebay from a Dell or similar and get it
installed in my Pismo.

Thanks to everyone else as well for their advice on this topic.

zipzoomfly has the Pioneer DVR-K05 for under US$90.

My Pismo has a slot-loading drive from a newer TiBook in it (I
happened upon the drive). The drive itself fit right onto the carrier
for the Pismo drive. The bezel doesn't fit, so it looks a little
unfinished, someday I may get around to hacking it so it does fit.

Everything works, burning disks and watching DVD's.

xlr8yourmac.com has a wealth of info about this, too.

Re: Pismo DVD/CD-RW drive

2005-12-08 Thread Robert Alcorn

Chris,
I bought an external case (firewire, usb) 50 bucks or less and then
bought a standard internal IDE/ATA
cd-r 52x16x24 at compusa or staples for about 40 or 50 bucks, look for
sales. Put them together, plug it into your pismo and there you have an
external burner. It works great. I even have a usb only cd-r external
box that I use all the time. I use toast 5.0 or 5.2 lite or titanium
for the program. Do not forget to install the driver (toast) first.
Also great for an external HD use. Good Luck.

I checked around, and such drives exist, but they are VERY expensive.
However, I've heard that the drives themselves are a standard laptop
drive sitting in the shell. In checking for generic laptop drives that
support DVD reading and CD writing, they seem to be much more
affordable

(tons on ebay pulled from Dells and the likes).

Has anyone done this? Bought a drive and swapped the internals into the
shell for the Pismo? Does it work? Do you lose the ability to play DVDs
when you do that?

Any other options out there to get CD writing without spending a
fortune

and without needing to carry an external drive?

I replaced the dying DVD-ROM in my wife's Pismo with a Samsung combo
drive from a Dell laptop. I swapped the internals in the caddy and
used Patchburn to fully support burning. A little fine sanding and
superglue on the bezel and you can hardly tell it's not the original.

Can you still play DVD movies with it? I know Patchburn lets you make non
Apple burners work with Apple tools, but I wasn't sure if you lost the
ability to play DVDs by going with a 3rd party drive.

I base this fear on the fact that I can't play DVDs using a 3rd party DVD
drive on my iMac DV (its internal DVD drive has eject problems, so I try
not to use it much). However, I freely admit that I don't know if the
failure is because it is a 3rd party drive, or because it is external.

As such, I'm just looking for a confirmation that the Pismo, when using a
3rd party drive to replace the original internal DVD drive, will still
allow you to play DVD movies. If I can get that confirmation, I'll take
the jump and get myself a DVD/CD-RW drive and make the swap.

Device control is integrated into the system. The device is always ready.
You put a disk in and it should appear on the desktop. I am assuming here
that we are talking about an internal CD/DVD drive. If it suddenly stopped
reading any disk, then I guess there is a problem with it. If you have
another CD/DVD drive in another Mac, you can try those disks there just to
be sure.

While this is completely true, Panasonic has reportedly

It is the UJ/UJDA-8xx (where xx is 10, 20, 30, etcetera, but *not* 45)
which is completely compatible with the bezel of the Mac PBs, as
described above.

Don't know about what's been discontinued or not, but the drives are
easy to find on ebay. The important thing, as I mentioned, is to get
a TRAY-loading model. The UJ-845 is a slot-loader, which does work
fine in the Pismo, but obviously you can't use the original bezel
At least, not without cutting a slot in it! Though it should be noted
further that some online stores (MCE, Wegener Media, etc.) do sell
slot-loading drives for the Pismo with a Pismo bezel on them.
Probably custom-made, custom-cut solutions.

One way to solve that would be to make an RTV mold of the Apple bezel,

There's enough room to do this as the replacement drive sits slightly

Re: Pismo DVD/CD drive

2005-09-02 Thread PeterH5322

Many Matshita tray-loading DVD-R burners from the UJ-810/811/etc.
series can use the original Matshita bezel from the DVD read only
drive. Both have 3 small screws and 2 line up perfetcly; you can
either leave the 3rd screw out (the tray still works fine) or, as
some people have done, drill a 3rd hold in the plastic (far away from
the mechanism, so not TOO risky) that lines up with the 3rd screw.
I've done this on a Pismo with a UJ-810 and a UJ-811, and it looks
great.

While this is completely true, Panasonic has reportedly discontinued all
of the drives mentioned, in favor of the UJ-845-B.

It is the UJ/UJDA-8xx (where xx is 10, 20, 30, etcetera, but *not* 45)
which is completely compatible with the bezel of the Mac PBs, as
described above.

Re: Pismo DVD/CD drive ???

2005-08-31 Thread Robert Eye
Go to

http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso

and search the drive compatibility database. Over 100
entries for Combo DVD-CDR (under Select a Mac Model,
use PowerBook G3 2000 Rage128 Mobility). At least one
mention there about the quality of the LM drive.

Most all of the entries are for the expansion bay -
having never owned a Pismo, I assume this is the most
common way of integrating this type of drive?

You might try these guys for a replacement drive

http://www.centrix-intl.com/fulllist.asp

I haven't used them and have no financial interest in
them; I found them while looking for a CDRW to put in
my son's new (to him) clamshell iBook (I was planning
on buying one from them, but my son decided he didn't
need/want CDRW capability).

Just because these drives are obsolete from a
production standpoint, there's no reason to not use
the drive (new or pre-owned). Heck, the Pismo is
obsolete.

I then got to move from a lombard to the pismo my wife was using:-)

I will say the lombard is obsolete since it can't install 10.4 only

The SR-8174-C 6X Mfgd 2000 (Pismo) and the SR-8173-C ?X Mfgd 1999
(Lombard) both seem to work well.

I've replaced both with up-to-date writeable and rewriteable drives, with
good success, except for cosmetics.

One way to solve that would be to make an RTV mold of the Apple bezel,
and then graft a cast piece onto the replacement drive's door.

There's enough room to do this as the replacement drive sits slightly
inside the Lombard/Pismo case.

The MATSHITA (Panasonic) drive in the machine is obsolete, and Panasonic is
not making any more tray loading drives.

Every one has been replaced by the UJ-845-B, which is a slot loader, is +/-
everything, and is two-layer DVD-R-R/W.

Sadly, this isn't on Apple's approved list, so you will have to use
PatchBurn to support it.

A perhaps better choice is the Pioneer DVR-K05, which IS supported by 10.4,
but is not by 10.3 without PatchBurn.

This Pioneer drive has a tray loading variant.

I have both of these drives in my Lombard and Pismo, and they are fine for
DVD playing and CD reading and writing, but I have yet to successfully burn a
DVD with these.

The fine print on these drives is they work best with an 80-wire/40-pin
cable, but that is NOT the way they can be installed in a laptop, although
there
ARE adapters which are intended for installing these drives in Shuttle type
PeeCees, and which DO support 80-wire/40-pin cables.

Perhaps this is the old multiword vs DMA issue with some of the PowerPCs?

Anyway, I know of no currently manufactured drive which will accept the
Lombard/Pismo bezel, and the same is true of the MCE drives for the Wallstreet.

The tray loading Pioneer drive (DVR-K15?) is just enough different in the
bezel attachment area that is is a NO-GO.

2005-04-06 Thread John Roberts
The later model G3 books and earlier model G4 books are notorious for
not mounting CD/DVDs. I have the first G4, (Mercury), and I'm
currently on my third drive. The consensus in the discussion forums on
Apple's website is that there is an OS or firmware problem in the
computers. People have been yelling at Apple about this for years.

Try resetting the computer, with power off, by pushing that little
button on the back edge. If that fails, try resetting parameter RAM,
which I forget how to do.

Yeah, I tried all that and more. I am going to call the seller and see
if there is anything he can do. I've pretty much resolved to get a
combo drive replacement. Thanks though. I hope the combo drive in my

Thanks for your help everyone. I think getting a new drive will be the

Unfortunately it's a pretty common problem with Pismo DVDs, especially
given their age now. They often have work only half right, i.e., the
either read CDs fine but not DVDs, or vice versa. Really no good fix
for them, you'll have to look for a new DVD/CD; though while you're at
it you might as well get a Combo CDRW/DVD or a Superdrive. Lots of good
cheap models are perfectly compatible. See the web site
www.xlr8yourmac.com for a good database and feedback on specific models
that work. If you can get a partial refund from the guy, say $40 or so,
that might be the way to go, as you could find a Combo on ebay for the
same money.
Good luck.

The LG CD/DVD drives in the Pismos are notoriously flaky.
Wegener Media sells replacements and kits to put in other drives, up to
Superdrives that are pretty reasonably priced, relatively speaking.

In mine I came across a working slot-loading CDRW/DVD drive from a
defunct TiBook. The drive fit right onto the carrier and plugged right
in.

There's no bezel on it, so it's just hanging out there. I may get
ambitious and see if I can retrofit the one from the broken drive, but
that's going to involve some serious Dremel work.

XLR8YourMac.com has reports of various modules that are known to work
with the Pismo.

Dude, your best bet is to just get a 3rd party DVD unit and drop it into the

If that is the original LG DVD/CDROM drive, they have a history of
failing over time. I'm on my second one (mercifully, mine faltered while

I would guess that most people on this list at least, are upgrading their
DVD modules and keeping them with one of those listed in the archives. That
is why they are so hard to come by now.

Congrats Eric. Great drive (as per xlr8) and a very nice price. I'm using a
Samsung SN-324B in my Pismo and it too has been a super replacement for my
DVD. The faceplate is a bit smaller than the original Matshita one and is
rectangular; no curvy Apple design, but it fit without modification. Also
has a raised eject button (I never did like Apple's recessed one).
Though for anyone having eject button problems, there are shareware and
freeware apps (e.g. Eject) that let you use a Function key to open the tray.

Just a quick question Eric: could you provide instructions on taking apart
the caddy for the LG drive (offlist if you prefer)? The Matshita one is very
easy to take apart, but I haven't figured out the LG one yet and I'm afraid
of breaking something when forcing it open. In short, how do you open the
LG caddy in order to remove the DVD and install a new drive? Thanks.

Chris

P.S. Another good option for a replacement Combo is the Sony CRX820, a
24x8x24x8x Combo that also has a handy switch right on the drive that you
can use to set it as Master (makes it possible to boot while holding down
the C key and also could/should resolve powerbook wake-from-sleep problems,
etc.).

Re: Pismo DVD Revving really high / replacement Pismo CD/DVD drives

2003-10-24 Thread Eric Morrison
Howdy:

I just did this. I replaced the CD/DVD drive in my Pismo (10.2.8...
soon to be 10.3) with a new LG GCC-4240 combo DVD read, CDRW drive.
Great drive. Fast and works great with burning (you can get files off
of xlr8yourmac.com so that you can burn from iTunes in both OS 9 and
10). The only catch is I haven't quite figured out what I am going to
do for a drive faceplate yet (I've only had it about a week). I got the
LG brand drive thinking that the original faceplate might fit it,
unfortunately it is not even close. It came with a black faceplate that
had to be removed to install it in the expansion bay drive caddy. I am
probably just going to use a grinder to remove some of the extra
plastic nubs off this faceplate so that I can reattach it without it
interfering with the drive caddy. It won't be the curvy faceplate like
the Apple original, it'll be flat and recessed a couple of millimeters.
Not perfect but good enough that it will be acceptable.

If anyone is interested in doing this I got this drive from pcretro.com
(www.pcretro.com) for ~$100 and the sales guy was Richard Bunk (no
affiliation other than I'm a satisfied customer) and you can contact
Richard at 301/937-8440 (Maryland). There are other drives available
that will work in a Pismo (check out xlr8yourmac.com) so check them all
out before deciding. If you have any followup questions, feel free to
drop me a line.

... Eric

Best solution to something like this is buy a bare CD-RW or Combo drive
(you can find some decent, but pricey ones on eBay) and replace the
drive in your caddy. These drives are designed to not spin up to high
speeds like that, and will read any disc you throw at it much more
easily. Plus you get burning ability in your Pismo.

Re: Pismo DVD Revving really high

2003-10-23 Thread Krevnik
Nah, it just means you are using some fairly new CD-R media.

My Lombard does the same thing, but only with more recently produced
media, along with my 8600. If you take a look at the newer media, it is
translucent when looked at from the data side. That combined with the
cheaper dyes being used in the data layer make it harder for older
drives to read them.

It depends on the model and make of the drive, as well, apparently, as
the cd.
All modern CD drives tend to be noisier, and that whining jet engine

Once the disk is recognized as an audio CD it slows down.

The signs that the drive is going is if this goes on and on, or revs
up
and down repeatedly before the disk is recognized.

You can use any caddy (or sled) for Lombard or Pismo, they're all the

Pull the battery and pull the AC cord. That will kill it. The machine
will run a file system check on reboot so it will take a but longer
start after you do this. Hopefully you can eject the dvd after that.

Re: Pismo DVD player ?

2003-09-19 Thread Lewin Edwards
Hi!

M5505 (year 1999)
Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series 2X DVDxROM Module
M7931 (year 2000)
PowerBook DVD-ROM Module
Sounds strange to me that it has G3 Series as this was the
Wallstreet range, and the unit doesn't fit that PowerBook,
nor is the DVD supported in the Lombard...
The Pismo/Lombard are referred to as Powerbook G3 Series, though. (As
opposed to Wallstreet, which was Powerbook G3 without Series).

Is the second unit also a 2X ?
Is there any difference ?
I am planning to keep the M7931, is that the best one ?
Put them both in the Pismo (one at a time), use Apple System Profiler
to get info on what mechanism is inside. The earlier drives seem to
have been legendary for problems, but there's no way of you knowing
which one actually has the more recent mech in it; the original owner
may have had an in-warranty problem and had the unit refurbished with a
newer mech.

Re: Pismo DVD player ?

2003-09-19 Thread David Ensteness
To settle some misunderstandings, G3 PowerBooks came in several sets:

The PowerBook G3 [Kanga, 3500, processor speeds of 250MHz, used a 3400
case, does not support Mac OS X]
PowerBook G3 Series [Wallstreet/Mainstreet/1998, speeds of 233, 266,
300, several screen sizes, all legacy ports, last Old World ROM
PowerBook supported through Mac OS X v.10.2.6]
PowerBook G3 Series [Lombard/1999, revised Wallstreet case, thinner,
lighter, 333MHz and 400MHz, better video, USB and SCSI, first New World
ROM, supported into 10.3]
PowerBook [Pismo/FireWire/2000, used same case as a Lombard, 400 and
500MHz, FireWire, AirPort, Rage128M video, faster bus, no legacy ports,
supported into 10.3]

Specifically about the DVD:

The Pismo had DVD standard, the Lombard had DVD as an option and it
came standard on the highend, DVD was also optional on some Wallstreets
with hardware decoding [which is not supported in Mac OS X].

The earlier *Pismo* DVDs were made by LG and have had issues for most
people [premature death]. The earlier Lombard DVDs have had no such
problem.

I would tend not to use a Lombard DVD-ROM in a Pismo until I had
confirmed that it worked by some other means. I have not heard any
cases of drive bay modules from a Lombard being incompatible, I believe
in fact they all are compatible with a Pismo, however, my level of
comfort would be to check it out with a little reading first.

Under Apple System Profiler, see if one of them is a Matshita or Matsushita

Pete, you possibly have the dreaded 'LG dying' problem (which I had
shortly before my original warranty ran out). The LG model of drive has
documented problems with failing way too soon (the Matsushita drive
doesn't appear to have the problem). I had similar symptoms when my
drive
 started going south.

Well, I never had applecare so I guess it's going to be an expensive fix.

Looking on the web, it appears the replacement is $130 up. OTOH I've
seen two combo drives for $200 $300
(http://www.wegenermedia.com/pismocombo.htm) and I saw an article on
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/PB_G3/oem_combo_drives/build_guide/build_combo_drive.html
for using a Matsushita UJDA 710 drive as an alternative (about $100 on
ebay) tempting.

Has anyone any other suggestions or thoughts on this matter? And how do
I explain it to the wife?

Thanks
Pete another LG victim.

Hi- I just replaced a Pismo DVD drive (actually a working Matsushita model) with a
UJDA-720. The switch was simple, but I had to drill another hole because the Pismo
faceplate had different mounts than the HP the drive came from. Anyway, the drive was
$52 on eBay - just look in the laptop components section and be patient. This one had
a picture of the actual drive, so I knew it was a Matsushita mechanism. Apple System
Profiler recognizes the drive, but disc burning and iTunes aren't supported. Toast,
however, will work with the drive so now I have a working combo drive in the wife's
Pismo. BTW, I also tested the drive in my Lombard and I could burn with Toast there,
too. My next step is to work on the disc burner support file so I can do things from
Finder and iTunes. I didn't see that one in a quick run thru xlr8, but I can do more
looking today.

It does happen to the Matshita drives, too, though probably not as
frequently. It is a problem that is starting to surface a lot in Pismos,
perhaps not surprising after 3+ years of work as people's main everyday
computer. The faulty Pismo DVD is a big thread at the Apple Discussions
forum. Check it out at the Apple site.

For alternatives to just a simple DVD replacement, check out xlr8yourmac.com
under the Drive database and under Pismo. Lots of people have swapped in
combo CDRW/DVD's in place of the faulty DVD; DVD-R/RW units are starting to
appear too. Lots of user feedback on models, installation tips,
compatibility, bootability, modified plugins for iTunes and Disk Burner,
etc. It is surprising just how many different makes and models work in the
Pismo; and the swap is easy and takes about 10 minutes max.

If you are going to spend $100 on a replacement, I'd suggest checking out
the xlr8yourmac database and then heading to ebay. Prices have risen lately,
but you should still be able to get a 24x10x24x8x combo CDRW/DVD for between
$100 and $130. I've seen 8x4x24x8x Matshita units go for under $50, which is
a great deal.

I had this exact same problem and figuring that the mechanism was blown,
bought a new mechanism for it from Wegener Media. They mentioned this happens a
lot with the DRN8080B mechanism, and they've found a new revision of the drive
which is less problematic. As it's working perfectly now with the new
mechanism, I'm pretty certain that the diagnosis was correct.

Since I'd guess you're not even covered by AppleCare, you may be out of
luck (if you are still - even barely - within your AppleCare warranty,
RUN your Pismo to the closest Apple service provider for an exchange of
the drive. Heck, call Apple first to ensure that they know of the problem
occurring within your warranty!).

From my own and others reports of how Apple handles the replacement, you
may get another (possibly refurbished?) LG drive, or if you get really
lucky, you may get the Matsushita drive. My replacement LG drive has been
working fine so far (Thank Heaven for that!).

You do not have to pull the Matshita drives open, they pop open just like
any other drive. Yours must be catching on the Pismo case, causing it not to

On the case:

Oh let me count the ways:

(Day.month.year)

Computer purchased on 12.1.2001

27.4.2001 Battery will not hold charge. Replaced
5.11.2001 LG-8080B (DVD) stopped mounting DVDs, CDs shortly after. Replaced
13.8.2002 Battery will not hold charge. Replaced along with non-faulty cord
17.12.2002 During my applecare call I stated that the Batt wouldn't hold a
charge AND stopped reading DVD/CDs. Applecare said I will have the tech
look at the motherboard. BATTERY REPLACED ONLY
03.01.2003 DVD still broke from before, sent it in again. DVD Replaced

3 battery replacements, 2 DVD replacements

20.2.2003 I used the S-Video out (for the first time) and my 512 Dimm turned
into a 256 Dimm. Reseating the DIMM and zapping PRAM fixes it for a few
hours, until it freezes hard. OS9 Boot says Built in memory tests failed.

latest firmware and running 10.2.1 now.

Once I tried my battery that wouldn't hold a charge in a friends Pismo. The
batt Worked fine. I think I will make a personal appearance with my repair
history at an applestore this summer. The problem is that my repairs have
been made in Europe and America, so my entire repair history isn't on the
applecare computers (I am guessing).

Here is the DVD thread at apple:

One of the threads even has a possible hardware fix:

Sigh, my dvd drive had to be replaced and under AppleCare, they sent me
 another LG :(
So far so good...but AppleCare is expired.

Actually, I think it _is_ a problem with the brand of drive. My LG has
failed twice, and both times it has been replaced by a LG. Once my Battery
died at the same time. At least I have Applecare till Jan. '03. You can try
and beg for a Matsushita (or Matshita) SR-8174, but I tried from the
Applecare-Europe folks and they wouldn't do it. I am going to go to an
applestore with a printed list in my hand of how many times the battery and
LG drive has been replaced on my book. Apple thinks they are saving money by
not replacing my motherboard, but I think that might be the only cure to the
problem.

I have also heard success at using a PC DVD/CD-R in the old casing of the
failed drive. I could find the web info (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/) if
anyone wants it.

Good luck,

Hi all

If the prismo use's the same drive's as the lombard,

look for smartdisk drives in firewire caseing's they are cheap on ebay
at the moment, and most of them are Teac branded drives inside.

These make very good swap in/out drives in the old caseing's as the
connector cards have the same interface.( i have a cd rw in my lombard
out of one of these case's)

What I suggest you do is send your machine in to Apple and pay the full
charge for laptop repair, which is $350. They will replace the drive and
check your hnges and a number of other things.

Is $350 the total cost, or is it $350 + parts? If the former, it
could be a bargain; if the latter, I'd suggest checking out
http://www.dttservice.com/, who offer free diagnosis, repair for cost
of parts + $30. I recently suffered another common PB problem,
Lombard CPU death; they replaced it for under $300, including
shipping both ways.

The Pismo drive, particularly the LG version, is pretty notorious for
failing
early in life. We see many in for repairs, and unfortunately, it is not
an
item which can be rebuilt.. The motor fails and the result is that the
head
will not read more than a few times without losing tracks or timing..

You can save a few bucks by getting a replacement drive module, and
installing it in your tray (the drive module can be removed from the black
plastic tray, and a new drive can be installed, using a small philips

companies as well--offering a newer version, with a beefed up motor I
might
add (LG finally figured it out after about a year, so the newer versions

A while back there was a thread about replacement CD-DVD/CDRW drives that
could be installed on the drive module that were very reasonably priced. I
haven't been able to track it down, does anyone recall them? I don't want to
lose my current DVD playing capability, but it would be nice to have a CD

Thanks for everyone's input. I have seen a Panasonic replacement on the

The Pismo drive, particularly the LG version, is pretty notorious for failing
early in life. We see many in for repairs, and unfortunately, it is not an
item which can be rebuilt.. The motor fails and the result is that the head
will not read more than a few times without losing tracks or timing..

You can save a few bucks by getting a replacement drive module, and
installing it in your tray (the drive module can be removed from the black

All that said, the Pismo is indeed a serious contender as one of the best
Powerbooks ever to leave Cupertino. Very well built, very few issues,
incredible expandability, and rock solid reliability. I've logged several
world trips on my own, as well as 15,000+ miles in the saddlebag of my
 motorcycle. I love it..

Okay - I am new here to the G-Books page and probably asking an old
 question.
 But I
just bought a great little Pismo 400 with 320 RAM, open box - new (no
 warranty) from
CompUSA. Everything seemed to work fine for a couple of months until a
 couple
days ago. Anywho the LG CD-ROM/DVD won't recognize CD's and the System
 profiler in
OS X.2.2 crashes everytime I take a look at the drive specs. If I run the
hardware test I get it to read 1 CD and then it stops again. Are there
 driver's posted fro these
GoldStar CD/DVD drives that enable them to be more reliable? I see a lot
 of postings on
Apple's web support pages but everyone basically says too bad or that's
 a bummer but
no answers. The rest of the machine runs like a dream - just no i tunes
 or the
like. Kinda aggravating!! Can anyone help me?

Found this from Oct. 8, 2002:
-

You need the Matsushita UJDA-710. This is a Combo DVD/CDRW (there _no_
DVD-R). Slimline DVD-Rs have only appeared in the last week in Sony
Toshiba models. The ebay store that often sells the UJDA-710 is here:

http://www.ebaystores.com/id=10525630

The alternative is the 330, which is CDRW only.

-

Also from July 31, 20002:

For an answer to the question about the DVD/CDRW replacement for the
Pismo,
this is where I went to get the info I needed to switch mine over.

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/PB_G3/oem_combo_drives/notebook_combo_drive.html

--

And from Jun 9, 2002:

I did the UJDA330 and it works great in my Pismo (very easy conversion)
although the face plate doesn't quite cover the opening completely, but I
only have it in to burn anyway so it doesn't make any difference to me. If
you purchase one, get the blue face plate, as it matched the Pismo black
fairly well.

Tom

 - and -

Does anyone know where I can get a VST expansion bay
cdr/w. I've seen people online selling them with there
powerbooks and was wondering where I might find one
for a good price.
Thanks
MR
I'm pretty sure they were available at $119 or thereabouts at the recent
sale (refurb from smartdisk/VST). They're only 4x4x20 and bootable in
Pismo only, not Lombard.

MCE's much more expensive expansion bay CDRWs go up to 16x write speeds,
IIRC. They also made/make 4x4 and 8x4. They are also available for
Wallstreet. Note that the Wallstreet ones are of a different form factor
to the later G3 'Books.

The kludge is the UJDA330 and 770 from ebay - these are Matsushita OEM
units you screw into your existing CD/DVD carrier. The 330 is CDRW, the
770 is a Combo DVD/CDRW. Usually around $180 for the 770 and probably
under $100 for the 330. Some members on this list have experience of
putting these together.

HTH - Heck, being able to find these kind of things makes keeping all my
e-mail worthwhile. Now, to save up for that larger hard drive...

You need the little S-Video adapter cable that came with the Pismo, and
 a mini-jack-to-whatever-audio-connector-you-need cable (probably
 dual-RCA).

Nah, you don't need the adapter cable -- you can do better than that. Just
run down to Radio Shack and get yourself an S-Video cable so you can pump it
in to your TV directly. The adapter is for those poor souls (like myself)
that don't have S-Video inputs on the TV.

it could just be the crappy OS9 DVD player.

Actually, in my experimentation, I haven't had any problems with DVDs, only
CDs. DVDs read fine, but I can't get a single CD to mount anymore. It
stopped in one day, in the middle of swapping disks, in fact. The last one
to read required that I press in on the door the whole time. If I released
pressure, the CD would stop reading, and the system would pause until I
pressed in on the door again. We enjoy watching the few DVDs we have on
9.2.2, and have had only intermittent problems. I have learned, however, to
always reboot the comuter before watching, and to make sure that the player
is the only thing open. That said, I forgot on Saturday, and let the kids
watch an hour of Reksio cartoons, with about a half a dozen apps open in the
background. :-)

I had hoped that Apple would fix the drive without complaints, but I begin
to doubt that. I will try calling them today, however, and see what
happens...

Re: Pismo DVD drive problem

2002-07-16 Thread Michael Bryan Bell

What you are describing, has been explained to me as a natural process of
DVDs. It was explained to me like this. DVDs can have multiple layers. At
some point, the laser has to switch layers. It is at this point that the
pause occurs. The fact that it's at the same place every time suggests this
to me. So, has the advice I've been given correct, or am I misleading
another unlucky soul as I have been mislead? :-)

In the old days you had double-sided DVD's (written data on each side) which
did require the lasers to switch... Now though almost all DVD's (besides
something like an superdrive made DVD) are made as dual-layered DVD's: if I
remember correctly the laser focuses itself just a little differently to be
able to read the layer it wants.

If you're using a double sided DVD, it shouldn't hang but rather spit it out
with a message asking you to flip it over and reinsert it (I have an old
stargate one that does this). The laser refocusing in newer ones shouldn't
even be noticeable at all.

Unfortunately Jon you're kind of screwed- DVD's in OSX are a dream, but in
OS9 they leave a lot to be desired. I honestly (and I tried, believe me)
could never really get it to work using 9.0 and below (gave up and used my

Heh, surprised apple never got sued about it, I know I wasn't the only one
who could never get it to work.

Doubtful- I've cracked just about every drive I've owned due to my gf being
from australia.

It's really pretty harmless if you get your update from a reliable source-
essentially just changing a small setting that keeps it from only allowing
one region. I've never noticed any differences in functionality beyond it
being region free.

On 7/16/02 12:39 PM Frank Cornew edified us all by writing:

Given that a few different drive mechanisms were available in these
modules, do you know if the several dozen dead drives (sddd) are of
the same model? Apple system profiler should cough up the pertinent
info under the devices and volumes tab. (guessing, my drive is at
home)
From what I recall of the earlier posts, almost all the problem drives
were the LG model (DRN8080B). Plus, there is a discussion area on Apple's
site where there are lots of posts about this problem with the CD/DVD
drive.

Re: Pismo DVD drive problem

2002-07-15 Thread DavidWedge

Having accumulated several dozen of these dead drives, I can vouch that it is
NEITHER a connector problem nor a motherboard, software, or PRAM problem. The
drive is the problem--they die, and they die regularly.

We've begun replacing these for the unlucky who are no longer covered by
Apple, and in every instance I've tested the drive, and found them to be bad.
They may read CD but they won't read DVD. IT happens over over..

Thanks,
David

That's a connector problem, pure and simple. Grunge and corrosion in the
connectors will cause problems like that...putting them in different
machines means the connectors take slightly different paths in mating,
which scrapes a bit off, making connections again.

Try cleaning the connectors with contact cleaner. Most contact cleaners
are ok for plastics, but test it on an inconspicuous part of your pismo
case before spraying stuff around.

Re: Pismo DVD drive problem

2002-07-14 Thread Ronald Romine

My DVD drive started giving me problems back in January (about two weeks
after the warranty ran out). It would give me problems reading disks,
usually either freezing the computer or simply not mounting it. It seemed to
be fixed by changing back to 9.1 for a while, but still reared its ugly head
on occasion. When 9.2.2 came out, I upgraded without much problem, but the
problem still showed up on occasion. In the past two weeks, it got worse,
but this weekend, it went wild, in in the process of swapping CDs, it
stopped entirely, and hasn't read a CD since Friday. It seems to read DVDs
fine, but not CDs. From my explorations on the web, this is a common
problem. My question is this. What is the likelyhood of Apple fixing this
for me, or for my having to pay for this. It sure seems to me that it is a
manufacturer's defect. Am I correct? What should I do? TIA.

I've been reading the Discussions boards at Apple' site.

This DVD problems appear to becoming more common, and the actually
source of the problem is unknown. Some Pismo uses solved the problem
with a CD/DVD drive replacement, others replaced the motherboard,
some found that swapping two non-working drives worked again if
swapped between machines, etc.

However, there may be nothing wrong with your DVD, it may be the
Prefs. The DVD preferences can become corrupted, allowing DVD's to
still work, but crashing when CD's are inserted. Try deleting ALL the
Preferences dealing with the DVD or CD Drive.

Re: Pismo DVD ROM acting up

2002-04-26 Thread Ronald Romine

I have a odd problem. My dvd drive on my Pismo will only mount DVD disks
and not any other CD's. Has anyone ever had a similar problem, or even
heard of it?

The Pismo CD/DVD drives have a bad rep, especially the LG model.
HOWEVER, the problem you mentioned can be caused be a corrupted
CD/DVD preference files.

Go the the Preference folder and delete ALL the CD DVD related
preference files, and I would suggest deleteing the Finder
preferences too.

Reset, and see if the DVD will take a CD after boot.

Re: Pismo DVD ROM acting up

2002-04-26 Thread James Rohde

On 4/26/02 12:03 AM Laurent Daudelin edified us all by writing:
There were basically 2 different brands of drives used in the Pismo. The
defective one was an LG, IIRC. If you go in Apple System Profiler, in the
devices and volumes section, you should see whether LG or Matshita plus
driver model, etc. So, if yours has the LG mention with no mention to
Matshita, then that's probably your problem...

Gary, Laurent's totally on the mark here. I had the LG drive, and
(luckily?) mine went south just before my warranty ran out. I located
(off Apple's site) an Apple Service Provider, who replaced the drive
(with another LG, alas). I figure when this one goes bad, I'll get the
MCE CDRW/DVD Expansion Bay drive. In your case, I'm guessing you *are*
out of warranty, so you might check MCE's site for the drive. At least,
you'll get the CDRW out of the replacement.

See the MCE site/page:

http://www.mcetech.com/xpebcdrw.html

I haven't heard of anyone on the list (or locally) who's had problems
with the Matshita DVD/CDROM drives, so if a person got a Matshita
replacement, that might solve the problem longer term.
