Debian will not need Ubuntu to survive but Ubuntu will always need Debian.

As I understand, any kind of PSTN to VOIP connection is not allowed.
(Without any official permission from DOT. That is given at very high fees)

PSTN to PSTN, VOIP to VOIP is perfectly fine, both incoming or outgoing
even internationally.

Typical scenerio of the famous cheap VOIP boxes that has voip on one side
and PSTN on other side (especially terminating to the EPABX) is not legal.

Congrats !!!

No idea whether there is any other bigger Linux setup (not just
Debian, but any Linux distro). But this IS a huge setup.

Few questions popped up. Hope you will answer them for everybody's
benefits. (Organisation name is not required)

A. On what parameters selection of a particular distro is done.
Pricing, support, stability etc. etc.
B. Is the decision taken by some central IT department and imposed on
all others or is it coming from user requirements across the country?
C. How the organisation is going to get support? Inhouse? services
from vendors or consultants? Outsourced activity completely?
D. What is the typical configuration of desktops, servers.
E. What was the timeframe to complete the project?
F. What are the most troublesome situations you face during the whole
exercise. Technical, manpower handling, financial etc.

Any other points you wish to share with us.

I am sure answers to these will be helpful to all the FOSS
implementors as a reference point and even more to the people who are
converting from non-FOSS to FOSS environment.

Thanks and regards,
-Sudhanwa

In simple terms, you are not allowed to connect your VOIP network to
the Telecom network/s (landlines,mobiles etc)

You can use VOIP completely on your EPABX but can not integrate it
with the other Telco lines.

One of the major IT companies in Pune have complete VOIP phone network
within the company. Almost all users have VOIP phone. For some key
people, separate landline handsets connected to separate EPABX are
alloted.

Unfortunately, most of the companies using VOIP simply terminate it on
the normal EPABX (typical Vonage scenerio) and then face problems
later on if the Telco knows about it and takes action on it..

May be you can think of using CB radio frequencies. Not sure if it is
legal to use for commercial purpose. that will be another discussion

You can go for official permission to integrate VOIP with the normal
DOT lines/exchanges. Authorities charge heavily for it, but it is
possible.

Integrating VOIP with PRI/EPABX/PBX etc is illegal.

~~~
Hi all,
this is just to update you all on an upcoming visit to India by Danese
Cooper, Alolita Sharma, and myself. Danese is our Chief Technical
Officer, and Alolita program-manages the features development team.
I'm the Deputy Director and also responsible for our product strategy.
The purpose of our visit is fact-finding and outreach to India's
engineering and open source community. The key questions we're hoping
to explore include: localization issues concerning Indic languages,
other MediaWiki improvements that would make our sites more useful in
India, improvements to our mobile gateway, potential partners in
developing and deploying offline versions of Wikimedia content.
We will, of course, also seek to meet with Wikimedians in the
different cities we're visiting, including the chapter.
We have a very packed schedule of community meetups, presentations,
and one-on-ones, but don't hesitate to let us know about people we
should meet. Our itinerary is currently as follows:
Arrival in Delhi 12/6
Mumbai 12/9
Pune 12/12
Bangalore 12/14
Hope to see some of you in December :-)
All best,
Erik
Hmmm
If you are not aware of root kits and other similar things, better
reinstall the server RIGHT NOW. Even Christmas time will be too late.
A few hours of downtime for technical reasons is usually acceptable
for all(management and users).
Re: [ilugd] Server is hacked, pl. advice
2010-12-07 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Dear Kuldeep,
Starting with a clean OS is always better. You are sure about the
things you have installed and working for you.
In the current scenario where there are many things running without
authorization, there could be some traces of the same even if those
things are stopped, cleaned.
Moreover, something might be running (or execute later on some time)
without your knowledge and doing some damage to somewhere else and you
are to be blamed for it and go behind the bars!!
As they say, prevention is better than cure !!!
Re: [ilugd] Questions on software applications
2010-11-28 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,
If you can give a context for your questions, it will be better to
understand them and find probable answers.
Not that I know the answers, but it will be even better if you can
specify versions/releases of the software instead of just saying
"anything prior to 2005". "Oracle, SQL server, Lotus Notes, or any
version control software" is too vast range. More specifics will be
helpful.
Moreover, if you can give some examples, it will be great to
understand what you are looking for.
Regards,
-Sudhanwa
If you can get your faculty members, lab incharge etc. on the list,
that will be helpful. The views and problems you share on the list
will be reaching them and you can get some quick and positive
responses for you activities like install-fests, seminars etc.
Getting teachers,management involved in the activities is the key to a
successful college-LUG. It will sustain only with their support.
If you can not give any FOSS option, there is no way to shift from
proprietary stuff.
FOSS philosophy and ideologies are fine most of the time but when it
comes to real world scenarios, it may not be practiced all the time.
I think most of the coffee shops like Costa or Barista offer wifi
internet access for free.
If you are going to spend some 1-2 hours in a coffee shop spending
some 100 INR for spending time in air conditioned environment, getting
free wifi will suit you.
I am not sure about such access availability in Delhi currently but
most of those coffee shops in other cities offer free wifi.
Please checkout with the local guys.
My id was added in their database without my confirmation.
[ilugd] Qimo in Marathi
2010-08-17 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,
Last week I downloaded Qimo 2.0  (http://www.qimo4kids.com ) distro. It is a
distro for kids. Based on Ubuntu, it has the lightweight XFCE interface.
I just wanted to check the contents and how the packages are in the new
version. Old one was nice and the current release is excellent and looks
professional.
The first screen when I started the PC from the CD was giving me options to
select language. To my surprise, it has many Indian languages available
including Marathi.
I know that Marathi localisation is not so good (actually very poor :-( )
but still started using Marathi language.
As expected, most of the stuff is in English but some of the things are in
Marathi.
One of the most important package in the distro is Gcompris and it is
completely in Marathi !!!
As I know, this work is done by Anand Kulkarni (and his team) from PLUG. It
was really a pleasant surprise to know that complete localisation of the
package is done and it is reached upstream and included in other distros.
Many many thanks and Congrats to Anand for this great work!!
Best regards,
Patents on embedded devices is different than software patents.
Software can not be seperated from embedded device and used
individually without the required hardware. As such, it does not
become a software patent.
Re: [ilugd] [X-Post] Guest account in Ubuntu 10.04
2010-08-01 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Mandriva comes up with a Xguest account by default.
This guest user has similar permissions/access rights like any generic user.
However, nothing is saved on the disk. Once the user logs out, whatever the
contents has created is lost.
Not sure if you want similar functionality for user. May be you can try it
out once and decide.
Re: [ilugd] Get Free of Cost SchoolOS DVD* (conditions apply)
2010-08-01 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hmmm
Yet another Distro.
I could see only  few packages for education. All others are same as a
generic distro.
Why not use QImo, FreeDUC, Edubuntu and others instead of this distro?
The key to a successful distro is support. Are you ready to give support to
the users and even more to your distributors?
Or else, this initiative goes in the BOSS way.
We have been hearing all kind of such devices right from those days of
Simputer.
Nothing has actually come up till date. (And not at that kind of pricing.)
Even if you take a bill of material and add its pricing, i twill not come
that low.
Lets hope and wait for the device to roll out in the market at that pricing.
[ilugd] linux compatible tv tuner card
2010-06-02 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,
I am trying to record some videos from a camcorder to a linux box.  (
Next phase will be live streaming !! )
I need a tv tuner card or some other similar device so that I can get
the input to the PC from the camera.
I have tried many TV tuner cards available in the market. Most of them
are supported only on Windows.
If you know any TV tuner card or any other grabber card that can work
on Linux, please let me know the model/make/manufacturer/price ( and
if possible, where it will be available)
If you have any other suggestions for this exercise, do send them to me..
Best regards,
Pune University has many FOSS subjects in various curricula.
PLUG (www.plug.org.in) has done some work with the concerned people
right from the initial phases when FOSS was introduced. PLUG did some
workshops during the 2-3 day long syllabus committee discussions and
later on for teachers training program.
PLUG members have also participated in some training
sessions/workshops in Ichalkaranji for Shivaji University teachers
training for FOSS. Those were conducted by NRCFOSS, Chennai.
I will try to find out FOSS subjects in the Pune University Curricula
and send it to you on your personal id.
NO. Author can decide to give copyrights to anyone.  There are many
Marathi authors who give copyrights of their books to their wife. And
there are some who give to the publisher.
And there are some authors working for social organisations where the
copyrights are given to the organisaitons.
// After the death of the copyright holder(if it is person)- not
necessarily the author-  protecting the rights becomes a legal issue.
( This is from my personal experience. I have to protect rights of
some 100+ books for an author expired some years back ).
It is not necessary that the author keeps the copyrights himself.
The publishing and distribution is another ball game.
eg. Raj Mathur can write a book and give copyrights to IlugD.
IlugD will then give publishing rights to the publisher.
Publisher may give distribution rights to various agencies may be
according to various criteria like statewise, sectorwise (academic,
commercial, students, libraries etc) and so on.
As such, author, copyright holder, publisher, distributor can be
differeent entities having different roles and bound by their
contracts with the concerned parties.
I hope the situation is clear from this example.
If the media check test is passed and does not show any problems, then
the problem lies somewhere else.
Shouting at support may not help you to get immediate solution. But
[ilugd] (OT) MIT students snap near-space photos of the earth with $40 Canon A470
2009-09-24 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Wondering what to do with that old clunker of a digital camera you’ve
got in your drawer?  Try taking photos of space with it. Three
enterprising MIT students have successfully launched and retrieved a
digital camera in order to snap photos of the earth from the upper
atmosphere — and they did it all for under $150.
By loading the A470 with the CHDK open source firmware add-on, the
students were able to implement an intervalometer script to allow the
camera to take pictures every 5 seconds during the camera’s 5-hour, 20
mile journey from its launch in Sturbridge, Mass., to its retrieval in
Worcester, Mass (with the Motorola phone broadcasting the camera’s GPS
location by text message all along the way).
Any nearby photolab can print T shirts from whatever image you give them.
I think BigBazaar also has those photography counters at many places.
Pricing is about Rs. 200-300 per piece.
[ilugd] (OT).. Microsoft patents XML word processing documents
2009-08-10 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Discussions, brainstorming welcome!!
The US patent office has granted a Microsoft patent application,
7,571,169, which "... is directed at providing a word-processing
document in a native XML file format that may be understood by an
application that understands XML, or to enable another application or
service to create a rich document in XML so that the word-processing
application can open it as if it was one of its own documents. "
The patent, filed in December 2004 and granted on August 4 2009,
specifies that this is done using an XML Schema Document (XSD), which
contains more information about the document's formatting, and also
covers systems that can open the document without using the original
word processing software.
Instead of having all kind of threads on such topics again and again,
a simple solution is to filter out/block such mails. Moderator/s can
easily apply simple rules to the list postings. I think for most of
the mailing lists, it works well.
/me looking for moderator/s action.
[ilugd] Confirmation: Fuel & Marathi L10n meeting on 6th June 6pm @ SICSR
2009-06-02 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,
After FUEL ( http://fedorahosted.org/fuel) Marathi  meeting in
Gnunify09 and IndLinux meetings (
   and
 ),  we had
decided to have another meeting to discuss Marathi L10N activities,
here the aim being apart from the current active members in Marathi
L10N,  find and get more persons from different walks, to participate
in Marathi L10N activities. While that being the broader goal, the
starting point activity will be standardizing on Marathi translations
in FUEL, after which more localization works could be done, depending
on resources and level of interest.
At Indlinux meet ( attendees: Karunakar, Sudhanwa, Rajesh Ranjan,
Shantanu Oak, Sandeep Shedmake and others ), we had decided to meet on
6th June, either before or after PLUG meet, to discuss further plan of
action.
This is a confirmation of the meeting. Meeting will be held at 6 pm @
SICSR on 6th June. ( PLUG meeting will be at 4 pm.)
We will try to make this meeting as a kick start for Marathi L10N
activities.  FUEL is a good starting point.  If people are interested,
we can have about 20-30 minutes of FUEL session so that many more
people will also understand that activity and importance.
Being a generic start-up meeting, we can discuss the following points:
1. Current status of Marathi localisation: How, why, where, what etc.
2. FUEL activities. How to take it further.
3. Marathi word collection for adding in dictionaries.
Validation/verification of these words. (Shantanu Oak has a big
repository that needs to be reviewed/verified/corrected and included
in dictionaries)
4. Spell check and other related applications/tools
5. Generating new words for various technical English words.
5. Usage of unicode by various categories of users- especially the
DTP, book publications community.
6. Pushing Unicode from the Government to the users.
7. etc. etc. etc.  add here etc etc etc.
I think it is necessary that this activity should be taken to all
other non-FOSS users also  saying--  "this is not just a FOSS community
activity. This is for the Marathi L10N activities that is generic to
all the computing systems and not just FOSS."
Please do inform other like minded people and groups so that we have
enough people at the meeting to give a boost to Marathi l10n
activities.
Best regards,
--Karunakar, Sudhanwa
Filters can be put for some keywords like iI "nvit" ation  or cC
"ommercial" etc. Mailman can process such filters easily and such
mails are kept for moderation. This will be irrespective of a valid
subscriber or not.
You may also have policies such that a new user will be kept under
moderation for one month or some suitable time frame till he/she
becomes familiar to the list and the posting guidelines
I believe many LUG mailing lists have such filters and moderation policies.
In many courses from Pune University and Symbiosis University, open
LAMP stack is more or less included in engineering, computer science,
Hi,
Talking about copyrighted material but a little OT.
On one of the ISO 27001 related mailing lists I am subscribed to,
where most of the people are auditors, copyrights are given very high
If someone sends some copyrighted material without any proper
permissions from the author, he/she is out of the list immediately and
this is what the list admin says:
Goodbye "copyright_violator".
If anyone else would like to leave the mailing list, simply unsubscribe
yourself or send me an email request if that's too hard: there's no need to
post copyright materials here without permission just to get yourself booted
If you are using samba only for windows domain authentication(and/or
So what?
Most of the people on various lists are already used to share their
data in various ways like sharing their email ids, google shared
documents, google sms announcements etc. Many are already used to (at
least aware of) working on remote machines where all their data and
applications are stored.  Some others do virtualisation and use
different OS and applications on the same machine alongwith user data.
I don't see anything wrong in this from user point of view. If a user
knows how to work and store data on remote machines, it does not
really matter. This is irrespective of FOSS or proprietory OS/apps.
Similar points are being raised about cloud computing also.
If this is treated as service-model, user is just going to use the
software and not getting the license of the software. As such, user
should be concerned about the data only and not the software. And in
any case, it is users responsibility to handle the rights.
> time to start a discussion on GPL v4, anyone?
> or would the free-software community do it in hindsight?
How GPL applies to any user data? And even if applicable, how it is
going to protect from the service provider?
Pradeepto has given a very nice explanation.
However, in the legal scenerio, refering to Indian IT act 2000,
unfortunately the term hacker or hacking is taken in the wrong sense.
This is what it says:
Section XI  66 : Hacking with Computer System
(1) Whoever with the intent to cause or knowing that he is
likely
to cause wrongful loss or damage to the public or any person, destroys
or deletes or alters any information residing in a computer resource
or diminishes its value or utility or affects it injuriously by any
means, commits hacking.
(2) Whoever commits hacking shall be punished with
imprisonment up
to three years, or with fine which may extend up to two lakh rupees,
or with both.
Well, we can not change the people who write these words but we can
educate them and all others by giving knowledge with the proper
meanings/explanations (Like the one Pradeepto has given)
Even if we accept the legal terminology, Ethical and Hacker will not
go together.
Most of the people on the list understand/know what Pradeepto said.
Have you read that page carefully?
This is what it says:
"Free software" does not mean "non-commercial." A free program must be
available for commercial use, commercial development, and commercial
distribution. Commercial development of free software is no longer
unusual; such free commercial software is very important.
Please do not add your own thoughts/words in some "reference"
Re: [ilugd] Is it illegal to redistribute RHEL? Open Letter To Linux For You India
2008-10-12 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Dear MSY,
People are trying to help you understand things in the proper
context/perspective. However, it seems that you are still not able to
accept anybodys opinions/views.
That leads you to a dead end and nobody can help you at that point.
First of all, it was a wrong starting point -- some article in a
magazine-- for the discussions. You should have started with some good
study of licenses, copyrights, Trade marks.
If you are so serious about knowing these and applying the same
knowledge for the discussion on the article OR the "RHEL"
distribution, please start off with a completely NEW mail stating your
understand of a. GPL v2 b. GPL v3 c. Trademarks d. copyrights e...
f g... etc etc..
That can be a good discussion useful to many others too. But in this
thread, you are already at a dead end.
It is very clear from your mails that you do not have an open mind to
accept things which are completely acceptable according to the license
of RHEL (GPL v2 in this case) and also legally correct across
countries regarding the trade marks.
So, it is now your choice to open your mind or get stuck up at a dead
end. and do not worry about the GPL. FSF  will take care of that :-)
See the difference between v2 and v3.
Regards,
-Sudhanwa
ps: top posting is done deliberately.  I do not think this mail and
the thread deserves any further reading.
2008-10-04 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,
I assume that MSY is a troll but still going ahead and adding in the
thread as the discussion is useful for many people who are not so
clear about this whole thing.
MSY,
Please understand the difference between Trade Marks, software
licenses, Free software , commercial software, proprietory software.
Looks like you have very "clear misunderstanding" of the terms and you
need a legal advice about these terms. So, instead of sending some
junk messages on the list, please get in touch with a legal advisor.
Some points for you to seek more knowledge are:
RHEL does not violate GPL
RHEL is different than Fedora
GPL v2 is different than GPL v3. Read GPL v3 for trademark and other
related matters. As I remember, RHEL is not under GPL v3.
If you want, you can BUY a box pack of RHEL which contains the source code also.
and if you have the capabilities, remove all the RH trademarks and
other such stuff and make a modified distro out of it. That modified
That is another good pointer to understand things. But people may or
may not agree to all the views mentioned there.
"Intellectual Property" is a generic term and covers many things.
I am neither confused nor trying to confuse others about IPRs.
IPR is a complex subject and I will not get into it on the list.
Probably, "ji" is used only for the "contributors" and you may not be
using "da" will start another thread and another flame war about TM
It is really unfortunate to know that people of CEO level are not able
to understand the Trade Marks and Licenses.
I think it is a need to educate people on IPRs in general, software
licenses, copyrights and copylefts etc etc.
It will be great if the upcoming events like FOSS.IN etc arrange some
talks/discussions on the same.
Looks like the OP is really troubled by RH.
/me looking for event organisers.
/me thinks if this is some publicity stunt for the websites mentioned
in the posting, it is surely going to get some bad publicity.
IIRC, one of my friend Somesh (http://guruvision.in) had written
complete C programming (I think using turbo C interface) way back in
Check out the news coverage on this page:
I am not a Redhat or Fedora user and I am completely neutral to those
distros and I am not commenting about what is right or wrong. However,
the mention in the article about the "Freedom" of Fedora project
raised my interest in it.
As a corporate decision, RH can provide any updates/patches as and
when they decide. But how does it relate to Fedora if Fedora is not
tightly coupled with RH (thats what is told by almost everybody in
RH/Fedora)
Compare this with the Debian situation some days back. There were
jokes and cartoons about the same but nobody ever thought of
questioning the Debian's FOSS culture of sharing things with users and
developers.
I think the difference  between the approach to resolve the problem
gives a clear picture.
Well, today it is RH/Fedora in the situation, tomorrow it could be
Ubuntu or Gentoo or Mandriva.
Lets accept the facts and move ahead.
Bruce Byfield has some rather pungent observations about Red Hat's
behavior during the recent server compromise problems...
http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osrc/article.php/3770216/The+Fedora-Red+Hat+Crisis.htm
==quotes==
the Fedora-Red Hat announcements not only concealed information, but
gave users no way to investigate their own system for problems, nor
any means of protection beyond the negative one of not installing or
updating. Faced with a security problem, Red Hat reacted far less like
Debian and much more like Microsoft, which is notorious for denying
security problems until a patch is ready. No doubt it tried to protect
its corporate interests, but it did next to nothing for users. When
trouble came, FOSS interests and standards were apparently jettisoned
in favor of immediate business concerns.
The damage to Fedora's credibility is potentially immense. In a matter
of days, Red Hat has quashed Fedora's claim to independence. It has
also threatened the credibility of the Red Hat employees who manage
Fedora -- people whose devotion to FOSS has always been clear in their
actions and dedication.
...
If Red Hat, one of the epitomes of a successful FOSS-based business,
can ignore FOSS when to do so is corporately convenient, then what
chance do we have that other companies -- especially publicly-traded
ones -- will act any better?
=end quotes=
Subject: [article] Open Source group sues Quebec government for
choosing Microsoft
To:
Source:
http://tech.blorge.com/Structure:%20/2008/08/31/open-source-group-sues-quebec-government-for-choosing-microsoft/
A group advocating open source has sued the Quebec government for
procuring Microsoft software without open tender. It claims the
government has gone against its own stipulated procedures for buying
software.
The group in question, FACIL or pour l'appropriation collective de
l'informatique libre, is a non-profit that promotes Free Software in
Quebec. Canadian paper The Gazette reported FACIL has filed a motion
in the Quebec Superior Court, claiming the government has gone against
its own guidelines on procurement by not inviting tenders from local
software providers. Instead, the Quebec government chose to procure
software from Microsoft.
It stated that the Centre des services partagés, which buys technology
for the government, spent more than $25 million this year on
proprietary software without having open tenders.
In a statement, FACIL said, "These purchases hurt the free software
suppliers throughout Quebec and are an obstacle to the development of
Quebec IT enterprises."
There might be one small loophole that might explain away the $25
million purchases – Microsoft holding the current software copyrights.
System upgrades could be exempted unless FACIL can prove its claim
that said upgrades were significantly different from previous
versions. That might be provable in the case of Windows Vista. FACIL
insists the government could have looked harder for alternatives to
the costly upgrades.
"Going from Microsoft Office 2003 to Office 2007 is more complicated
than going from Office 2003 to OpenOffice," said Cyrille Béraud,
president of Savoir-faire Linux, an open-source consultancy and member
of FACIL.
"Are we sure Microsoft will exist in 30 years? Will the government be
able to read its own documents?" Béraud asked.
Despite vocal champions for open source, the software procurers could
possibly have been persuaded by what was easy and familiar – Microsoft
products. Unless the Quebec government can properly justify the
upgrades, this just might be a legal and symbolic victory for open
source advocates in Quebec.
Re: [ilugd] Fwd: Problems with http://www.mcdpropertytax.in/
2008-07-15 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Dear Sir/Madam,
This is in continuation to the email communication by Mr. Raj Mathur
about problems with http://www.mcdpropertytax.in/ .
The website is part of the e-governance activities which facilitate
ease of use and gives transparency to the users.
The National Knowledge Commission (NKC) has recommended use of Open
Source in e-governance.
Here is the text from the recommendations for your reference.
7. Open Source Software —Because of the enormous size and scope of the
e-governance effort
   in India and because of the availability of globally recognised
software talent of Indians, we
   must actively encourage wherever possible open source software
implementations and open
   standards. This will allow us to have cost-effective solutions and
help develop open software
   products and standards. It will also help improve scaling up as
well as minimize delays
   caused by repeat tendering.
The document is available on the NKC website and you can download it
from this link:
http://knowledgecommission.gov.in/downloads/recommendations/NKCRecommendationsEGovernance.pdf
According to the recommendations, you are requested to change the
website to open source technologies and use open standards which you
are not using currently.
Yours Sincerely,
Sudhanwa Jogalekar
By this statement, you are misleading the list.
As I mentioned in my earlier mail, Opensolaris is under CDDL which is
a OSI approved license.
Read this to get clarification:
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/licensing/
The binary licensing FAQ is here:
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/about/faq/binary_licensing_faq/#what-bcl
The components not released as source are mentioned here.  More or
less, they are some drivers etc.  As such, in this context, if we take
Linux as FOSS, Opensolaris can also be taken as FOSS
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/about/no_source/
>From whatever I could understand from these licensing and other
documents from the Opensolaris website, this is what I could reach to
:
Opensolaris IS FOSS (CDDL is OSI approved) when you get the various
modules, components individually from the sources.
However, when it comes to the CD/DVD, it DOES contain some binary
components whose sources are not there in the Opensolaris project. As
such, the CD/DVD DOES NOT remain completely as FOSS.
Probably, this is similar to Ubuntu which contains proprietory
components for video and may be some other drivers. ( I am not Ubuntu
user and can not comment on this as I have not installed it. Please
correct me if wrong.)
@Angad,
I think you should have taken this thread on the Opensolaris forum
with some references and not just asking directly if Opensolaris is
FOSS or not. You can probably, still take the synopsis of this thread
to the other forum and seek answer again.
Can we stop this thread here? I do not see any further fruitful discussion.
Regards
-Sudhanwa
I think it is unfair to declare Opensolaris as NON-FOSS.
If you take similar case (and a long thread) of Linux (Kernel as such)
having binary/hex code for some drivers, then Linux also becomes
NON-FOSS.
Please refer to http://www.opensolaris.org/learn.html . The first para
says it is under CDDL which is a Open Source license. the last para
gives a list of distros based on Opensolaris. If you check those
websites, they again mention product/package under various FOSS
license.
Ubuntu also has some proprietory components but nobody says it is
NON-FOSS and is promoted and accepted very well everywhere.
I have nothing to say about how Opensolaris is and how it compares to
other Linux distros. But it should be seen/discussed  in the correct
perspective if this list/forum is for FOSS and not just Linux.
I am not going to download it during the world record attempt. This is
my protest against showing the wrong map of India on their website.
I think there are better configurations available at competitive
price. Check the Dell laptop pricing here:
