[info-tech] 1 to 1 pc

2010-06-29 Thread George Tuttle

Techs:
Anyone looking for 1 to 1 machines? Below is a URL to a machine similar
to what I sell to seed corn dealers to scan their products. The only difference
is this machine has a regular hard drive and the one that I use has a solid
state hard drive so they can use it in their cold warehouses and is more
durable when dropped. The battery life on these units has been 8+ hours even
when attaching a hand scanner to the usb port. They have been incredibly
durable machines. When I received this advertisement, I thought maybe someone
was looking for 1 to 1 machines at an awesome price. The URL

Techs: Would you forward this to your physics teachers. Watch the 2-minute
video that shows a drop of water falling into a puddle at 2000 frames a second.
You will see something totally unexpected. The physicist in me compelled me to
pass this on to other physicists. The thought went through my mind that
possibly the AEA could purchase a high speed camera and loan it out to schools.
There are so many fascinating ways to use one in many different fields.

We want to start using communication software (voice/video) some between
offices and staff. One of the reasons is that we have to pay long distance
charges between buildings. No VOIP yet. We have been testing Skype and
Windows Live with our faculty and staff but I thought I would ask for the
group's preferences and opinions. I want to allow traffic for one client only.

[info-tech] 1:1

2009-10-27 Thread George Tuttle

Techs,
I've been blissfully retired for 2.5 years and have missed most of the
conversation and debate associated with 1:1. When called back about a month
ago, our district was already committed to 1:1. During the past month, I have
reviewed some of the information associated with this commitment. As a
classroom teacher, I would have loved to use the immediate feed-back and
evaluation that is possible with 1:1. There are many other positives. But I see
one possible negative. From the comments that I have heard during the last
couple of days, it sounds like most let the kids take the units home. How about
the kids with no internet access at home? At first blush, it looks like this
creates an even larger uneven playing field for the disadvantaged. Is this a
problem and if so, how has it been addressed by those already involved with
1:1? I'm concerned about this and definitely need some help with this one.
George
PS: I have to respond to emails at night at home because I haven't taken the
time to create a school email address (don't plan to stick around that much
longer) and we block hotmail at school!! What a world we live in!!
PSS: Several schools have called and asked if they could attend the meeting
tomorrow at 10 AM (PM for Lance) Anyone's welcome!! I really need help in
getting up to speed on this 1:1. I really appreciate Scott and Jason taking the
time and will share their expertise with everyone.

Dan,
Pocahontas Area is doing a 1:1 with H-P Netbooks. We are in the middle
planning stages. I just recently stepped into the tech position after being
retired for two and a half years. I am a bit more cautious in a 1:1 deployment
than my predecessor, having been on the bleeding edge many times over the
years. The Netbooks have been purchased and are on hand and the original issue
date was Oct 8. However, a combination of events has pushed that back to a date
to be determined. On Wednesday morning, our administration and myself will be
meeting with Scott, Jason, and several other people to establish a timeline for
deployment, computer image development, Dyknow training, and more importantly,
a re-evaluation of our network system. Google apps is slated to become the
backbone of our 1:1 system. Dyknow will allow classroom level application and
control in the school environment. We plan to have local network storage of
some type for the students but many of the student files will be stored in
Google Apps. Google also has a piece called Gears that allows a student to use
Google Docs offline. We are considering dropping our Exchange Server (a little
tiny tear, and I mean tiny) and having the AEA host our faculty and for the
first time, student email. The ultimate goal is to simplify our network
operations as much as possible. For the really high end tech stuff, we employ
Heartland Technology Services out of Ames on an hourly basis. We are in the
process of hiring a new tech coordinator and I have said that it should be
someone from with an education background, someone that will do the training
and provide the moral support to make 1:1 a success. So making their life
easier by simplifying our network is a necessary part of that plan. We are
meeting at 10 PM on Wed in our Central Office east of the elementary building.
Since you are apparently considering 1:1, you're more than welcome to join us
and gain the insight you mentioned first hand. Just let me know if you plan to
attend.

RE: [info-tech]

2009-08-20 Thread George Tuttle

Mitch
On the old desktop models, you could reprogram the keys and they would stay
that way until you hit a certain key sequence that would stay in effect until
you would unprogram them Try this sequence:
Many Gateway 2000 systems were shipped with Anykey keyboards. These are
identified by the presence of extra cursor keys pointing in diagonal directions
and also extra keys such as PROGRAM MACRO, SUSPEND MACRO, REMAP, and REPEAT
RATE.

These keyboards are programmable - any of the keys can be reprogrammed as
macros or can be remapped to other keys. Most people do not use these features,
but it is VERY common to find that any number of keys have been accidentally
remapped.

To clear all macros and remappings:

Press CTL-ALT-SUSPEND MACRO.

The Program light on the keyboard will blink a few times for a few seconds
and all macros and remappings are then cleared.

If the Program light does not blink when pressing CTL-ALT-SUSPEND MACRO, the
CTL or ALT keys may be remapped. To reset them:
  1. Press REMAP once

  2. Press CTL twice

  3. Press ALT twice

  4. Press REMAP once

  5. Press CTL-ALT-SUSPEND MACRO to clear all macros.
Not sure if these keys are even on your keyboard. If they are, give it a try

Tony,

The prices and the best place to purchase changes on a minute by minute
basis. Whenever I need drives, I do a google search with 32 gig solid state
drives or whatever size I need. A number of websites listed will give you a
great cross section and will list the best prices. You need to be careful
about what company that you use. Most of the companies are rated. I have about
a dozen different companies that I use on a regular basis. Hope this helps.

in hot and cold and being dropped while running with no damage. They are mostly
used in warehouses. I've used 16 Gig, 32 Giq, and 64 Gig. I recently bought and
installed 64 Gig solid state drives that I purchased for $109. They are working
flawlessly. The larger drives install as a replacement for the internal laptop
drive. Now, several companies are offering the larger solid state drives as
standard equipment. The solid state drives have been the answer to my prayers.
Per Gig, they are more expensive, but I think that 64 Gig would serve most
applications. 128 and 256 Gig are available but quite expensive and require
more battery power. If anyone has any questions about SS drives, send me an
email.

Sorry, only have ss drives. You can buy a 12 gig ASUS 901 for $250 and if you
want, buy a 64 gig ss drive for $149. ASUS has the longest battery life for
netbooks that I've found, about 6.5 hours , using the standard 6 cell battery.
I use ASUS systems with seed corn dealers to scan and keep track of their
inventory. ss drives are no problem in a warehouse situation with the cold
temperatures and occasional drops. I tried a half dozen other systems and
settled on the ASUS 901. They come with Windows XP home which is not a problem
for my application but could be for networking. I'm now trying an ASUS with a
10 screen and a standard sized keyboard. The 901 has a I think a 8.9 screen
and a smaller kbd.

price. George Tuttle PS: If you want to try something simple for remote access
and storage, I've been using a MAXTOR Central Axis server for a couple of
months. Its cheap and easy to give network access or internet access. It's a
lot easier to manage than Sharepoint or some of the other services. Great for
all kinds of back ups too. It comes with a well designed software package. I
think most of your staff with a little training could set up class sharing,
etc. And for both Jon and Lance, it works with PC's and MAC's. One terabyte of
storage which can be expanded by attaching another terabyte drive. The central
server is $218 and you can buy another terabyte for around $120. 5 year
warranty. Worth taking a look at for those unusual applications where you don't
want to put stuff on your central servers.

for
all schools to use some sort of trouble ticket system. We will also

about
what projects you will be working on this summer.

1-2 - Prairie Lakes updates on Longhorn Roadshow and Interop. We can
also
use this time to discuss Web CMS systems.

2-3 - SquidNT - Web reporting, content filtering. Jason will talk about

Good morning-

I always loved troubleshooting computers for these hard to find problem.
We have run into our fair share of memory gone bad here in Fort Dodge,
and we have always used the trial and error method for find the problem.
Here is a Microsoft Memory Tester from one of my morning e-rags to help
test that RAM and motherboard memory systems for any errors. Hopefully
it will save you a little time and frustration.

Have a great day!!!

Jeremy

Test your memory

Recently Tom started experiencing some weird problems with his primary
computer. Windows would reboot by itself for no reason, programs
wouldn't install, etc. After a lot of weeping and wailing and gnashing
of teeth, he was able to track down the problem: some of his memory had
gone bad for some reason. He switched it out with the RAM from another
computer and the problems magically disappeared. Memory problems can
emulate many other problems, though. If you suspect you might have bad
memory, you can use Microsoft's Windows Memory Diagnostic to test your
RAM for errors. Check it out at

[info-tech] forced updates

2007-03-06 Thread George Tuttle
Techs:

Thanks for all the responses to my posting. That was my last
stirrem up posting before retirement. As some of you know, I am
retiring completely on June 30th. I will be able to spend more time
driving my 30 A and no time worrying about forced updates. My first
computer class was on a mainframe terminal in 1965 so I've seen a lot of
changes in 42 years. I assumed a part-time tech coordinator (I never did
know where that title originated) role in 1980 and the rest is history.
It's been a fun and sometimes stressful run. I'm kinda glad its over and
yet I'm sure I will miss it. I have a couple of concerns as I pass on
the baton.

There are a few people left that started out as teachers and
then for various reasons, became computer coordinators. The
microcomputer swept through our society like a firestorm! Schools as
well as society in general were caught off-guard. Schools were called on
to teach our society about microcomputers but had no staff or hardware
to do it. No standards existed. To assume the title of computer
coordinator, all you needed was a little knowledge and a lot of guts.
The one good thing was that most computer coordinators were classroom
teachers at one time or another. Although many mistakes were made, much
of the beginning work was based on educational principles. For example,
applications were not taught for many years. I taught programming
(anyone remember Applesoft BASIC or CP/M BASIC) and moved on to PASCAL
and different versions of C.

After a few years, applications such as Wordstar, Visicalc,
and dBase started to dominate the commercial market. Schools were then
expected to teach applications. The third year I taught Applewriter,
PFS-file, and Advanced Visicalc. The fourth year I taught /// E-Z
Pieces, the forerunner of Appleworks, on Apple /// computers. Here I
was, a person who could hardly type 20 wpm, teaching students how to
type. Fortunately that corrected itself with the elimination of
typewriters and the introduction of computers and Wordperfect which
ruled the business world. I moved from teaching into keeping the
computer systems running that were used to teach applications.

Since 1991, I have spent the lion's share of my time
supporting computers and gradually shifting to the most time supporting
our network. I went from the red books of Novell through all the
versions of NT server, 3.5, 3.51, 4, 2000, and now 2003. Through all of
these major transitions I had to keep reminding myself that supporting
sound education was really my job. In other words, the schools' computer
network was not there to provide me with a job but to make the school
staff more effective in doing their job. Herein is my biggest concern.
As the role of computer coordinator has shifted more to the technical
side, I see the possibility of losing focus on the real reason we have
computers and computer networks in schools. Just a caveat.

Enough ranting. In the eternal words of Bob Hope, I think,
Thanks for the memories.

RE: [info-tech] School Website Outsourcing

2007-02-08 Thread George Tuttle
Brad,

We publish to an offline site where the student's info is
reviewed before publishing to our live site. I think everyone is
having the same problem of trying to do more on our website and not
having the time or expertise to do it. If anyone has tried to maintain a
website, they soon find out that it is time-consuming and not everyone
has the design talent to do it properly. If schools want an effective
website, they need to realize that it is not free.

Is anyone outsourcing their district website?

I would like to hear the good and the bad if anyone has done this in the

some independent study students that help me along with a few coaches
and secretaries that do their part. We have a publications class here

relying on the website for more each week and it is really becoming a
burden. I really would like to add more features but I don't know
enough and don't want to know enough to do it properly. Also, there
is always a worry about a student author publishing something that
should not be published!

[info-tech] ICE

2007-01-26 Thread George Tuttle
In reading Scott's response to my posting of ICE, I still
put it on my cell phone. In fact I put in ICE1, ICE2, and ICE3. I'm not
going to worry whether some one finds it or my cell phone is charged.
All I'm going to worry about is that it will by chance save my or
somebody else's life someday. The rest of it is pure semantics and
fluff. I talked to EMTs on our staff and they all knew about ICE and
thought it was a good idea. They put it in the same category as putting
a medicine bottle in the refrigerator at home with emergency information
in it. They're supposed to look in the refrigerator for the emergency
information bottle. If there's none there, it can't help. Same is true
for ICE. I put it in the category of It can't hurt.

Have a nice week-end,

George

[info-tech] ICE

2007-01-25 Thread George Tuttle
Techs:

At the request of our school nurse, I said that I would
forward on the following information. I don't know if this has been out
before or not but I think is worth repeating.

George

PUT ICE IN YOUR CELL PHONE

A recent article from the Toronto Star, The ICE IDEA, is catching on
and it is a very simple, yet important method of contact for you or a
loved one in case of an emergency. As cell phones are carried by the
majority of the population, all you need to do is program the number of
a contact person or persons and store the name as ICE. The idea was
thought up by a paramedic who found that when they went to the scenes of
accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they
didn't know which numbers to call.

He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a
nationally recognized name to file next of kin under. Following a
disaster in London, The East Anglican Ambulance Service has launched a
national, In Case of Emergency (ICE) campaign
http://www.portlandonline.com/911/index.cfm?c=djaii

The idea is that you store the word ICE in your mobile phone address
book, and with it enter the number of the person you would want to be
contacted In Case of Emergency . In an emergency situation, Emergency
Services personnel and hospital staff would then be able to quickly find
the contact information under ICE.

Please forward this. It won't take too many forwards before
everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or
put a loved one's mind at rest. For more than one contact name
simply enter ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc. A great idea that could make a
difference

Techs;

Ive had a lot of responders to using active directory to control group
policies. I checked our school schedule and the room I would like to use is
available Friday afternoon, July 21st. Its hard to plan with
such a short notice and make it possible for everyone to attend and I apologize
for that. With that said, we will meet at the high school, (park in the south
parking lot and come in the door by the gym) starting at 12:30. Well
have a buzz session from 12:30 to 1:00 and cover active directory at 1:00. That
shouldnt take very long, maybe a half hour. This is a sharing session so
Im planning on learning a lot about active directory myself. Everyone is
welcome to stay as long as you want to share on other topics as well. We
dont meet as a group during the summer and that seems to be when I have
the most questions, setting up my new stuff. I talked to Scott Fosseen and
hes going to try to make it to the meeting as well.

Looking forward to sharing,

George

BTW: The high school is located on hiway 3 on the north side
between NW 3rd st and NW 4th st. Its
east of the 3 and 4 intersection.

PS If Friday afternoon doesnt work for you, let me
know and we can go through this on an individual basis. Active directory has
saved me so much time that I now have more time to share!

In order to perform a complete site survey we will need access to all

Techs,

Hopefully the snow will stay away and you will be able to
travel to Poky on Friday for the tech coordinators meeting. I've
alerted
the police department and given them Tim's, Jon 's and Lance's vehicle
license numbers for very special handling. Fines double for those 3
just
like a construction zone. Anybody else can be added to the list as
warranted. Just kidding!

We don't have school on Friday but the staff has workshops
during the day so the buildings will be inhabited in case you get lost.
We will meet in the vocal music room. To get there, take hiway 3 to
3rd
st and turn north which will head you into the middle/high school
parking lot. There is a sign on the west end of the gym that says
Pocahontas Area and then two smaller signs that say Middle School and
High School. If you go to the east end of the gym, there is an attached
building to the east that is the vocal music room. We will have the
door
open on the south side of that building which will lead directly into
the vocal music room.

There are a number of good places to eat in town and I will
give you directions to those establishments on Friday. One of them is
the new bowling alley that is also a sports bar and has an internet hot
spot. GO HAWKS

Hope to see you Friday,

George

--Users Urged to Install Unofficial Patch to Protect Computers from WMF
Exploits
(2/1 January 2006/31/30 December 2005)
The threat posed by the flaw in Windows WMF files is increasing. Now
hundreds of sites are using exploits for the flaw to install malicious
software on people's Windows-based computers. What makes the WMF
vulnerability particularly insidious is that it can infect computers
when users merely visit sites or view a maliciously crafted image in the
preview pane of older versions of Microsoft Outlook; machines can become
infected without requiring the user to click on anything or open any
files. Microsoft is investigating the issue and says it will issue a
patch, but has not yet said when that patch will be available. The SANS
Internet Storm Center recommends applying an unofficial patch; a link
to the patch is available in the Handler's Diary.

(Schmidt) The idea of installing unofficial patches, while it sounds
like a good idea, is pretty scary as it becomes yet another way to
potentially distribute malware and/or introduce yet a new vulnerability
if not written correctly. Who handles support when the unofficial
patch breaks other things? I support doing work-arounds but worry
about ANY quick fix patches.
(Northcutt): While I agree with Howard's observations, the path of
wisdom is to download the unofficial patch, and test it on some
non-production systems and also to make sure you are ready to go when
the worm breaks loose. Also, the WMF FAQ has been translated into a
number of different languages at this point, so if you are a
multinational organization you might want to be familiar with:
http://isc.sans.org/diary.php?storyid=994
(Pescatore): Even with a trusted source of an unofficial patch, the odds
of causing self inflicted damage by doing so are very high for
enterprise users. The workarounds (like unregistering the .dll and
losing thumbnails) are likely to have fewer unintended consequences than
an unsupported, unofficial patch.
(Schultz): To me it is not at all clear what the correct course of
action

RE: [info-tech] error report

2005-12-16 Thread George Tuttle
I've received a response about 90% of the time but not always
the first time I send it in. They build up a database. I've sent in a
report one day and get no response and send it in the next day and have
a response. Most of the errors are caused by drivers after Windows
updates. The errors are often sent to the equipment manufacturers and
they then publish updated drivers. If the problem is an internet issue,
they won't receive and you won't get a response.

[info-tech] error report

2005-12-15 Thread George Tuttle

Techs:

 While
visiting with some tech people I found out that they dont send error
reports to Microsoft when they have a problem. Thats too bad because Ive
had most of my issues solved in the return information from Microsoft. About
90% of the time the problem involves the need for an updated driver and the returned
information will take you to the correct website and most of the time the
correct driver update. I was surprised to find that some people were not using
this service. A couple of years ago when I tried this service, it wasnt
much help. Since then, they have built up an extensive database that is quite
helpful. As far as I know, the error report only connects you to the right information
needed to fix a problem. Ive had no negative by using it. Maybe other
people have had negative results but I havent. The next time you get the
screen Send an error report?, try it.

[info-tech] crystal ball time

2005-12-14 Thread George Tuttle

Techs:

I dont know how many of you have been watching the
development of the $100 laptop but its now going into production. According to
some articles that I have read, several states are contemplating providing
these units to all of their students in their respective states. Ive
included a(n) URL below that has more information about the unit. Google is one
of the sponsors and wants to play a role in providing the software to be used
remotely on these machines. That will be very fascinating to watch. Google has
oodles of cash (no pun intended) to fight the other software manufacturers. The
basic operating system is linux based so it can be modified and adapted by
anyone. My new year predictions are 1) This endeavor will be successful
2) the original idea was to provide cheap computers for third world countries
but I think domestic political pressure will also allow kids in the USA to have
them as well. It would be quite ironic to supply these to everyone outside the
country and not make them available to our own kids so I think they will be
available to American schools shortly 3) to compete, all other entry level systems
will drastically drop in price ($399 already) 4) schools and internet providers
will need to ramp up delivery speeds to handle the amount of remote access that
these machines will demand.

enjoyed your thoughts and ideas at our meetings. They're not the same

Fellow Techies...

I would like to say thanks for the past 8 years. Each of you has been
an integral part of helping make Pomeroy-Palmer as technology inclined
as it is. My wife and have accepted new positions at
Armstrong-Ringsted. Kate will be a 4th and 5th grade teacher along with
part time At Risk Coordinator. I will be taking the position of
Athletic Director and middle school PE health. I believe I will also
be maintaining the school web site, so techincally I will still be a
part of the group.

Since we are still AEA 8, I will have to stop and observe Tim and Jon as
they teach everyone how to schmooze a school board.

Larry Kruckenberg (our superintendent), will be taking over the duties
at Tech Coordinator. He is a Mac guy and might need some of your
assistance. I told him how great you are at assisting everyone. I will
also be helping maintain the school tech stuff remotely from Armstong.

Once again thank you for the good times and assistance. I am sure all
of our paths will cross again.

Mike Linde

[info-tech] 64 bit

2005-04-09 Thread George Tuttle

Techs,

 I just found this info
on the W2Knews site. It has answered a lot of my questions about 64 bit. The
comment that I found the most interesting is the shelf life of the new 64 bit
systems, much longer than our current systems. Im thinking that Im
going to wait until I can get good 64 bit machines. So far it looks like the
AMD processor is a better choice than any forthcoming Intel processor.

George

 * Who Wants 64-bit
Windows?

Microsoft will ship the
Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions this month. They will be sold with new server
hardware. Why would you want this? There are some very good reasons actually.
First, the 64-bit architecture has more memory address space which means better
performance: bigger memory, page files, cache etc.

Second, soon all the new
hardware you can get will be 64-bit by default. Third, soon there will be
x64-based versions of SQL Server, Exchange, and Office. And Visual Studio 2005
will support native x64 development of code. Fourth, 64-bit machines and
software will have a longer shelf life. Think it through for a moment, these
machines may not need replacement for 5-6 years instead of the 3-4 year
replacement cycle most of us are on now.

The one major problem?
Device drivers. You have to make sure that all the devices you hook up to your
systems are compatible. Paul Thurrott's supersite has a good overview of the
different 64-bit Windows editions and a great grid that explains which flavor
supports how many processors and RAM. Recommended.

RE: [info-tech] Web site

2005-03-31 Thread George Tuttle

Vicki,

 We
offer a class in website publishing using Front Page. They are
responsible for our school website. The students are given assignments
and then they save it to an unpublished website. The instructor reviews
it and then publishes it to the viewable website. Its not the best
website but it accomplishes the dual tasks of being an educational experience
and also as the school website. When I look at it and I think it could be
a lot better, I hold my tongue for two reasons, number 1, I dont want to
do it, and more importantly, we are, after-all, an educational institution.
Once in awhile Ill hear a comment about the website from the public about
a link not working quite right. I tell them that it is done by students and who
are just learning. They understand and are glad to see that students are
actually doing the work as part of an educational experience.

 The
easiest thing would be to hire some one else to do it. Our administration
and school board chose to have our students responsible for our website, fully
aware that it may not be perfect. You may want to visit with your
administration and school board about it. As a former educator for 37
years, I would recommend that you take advantage of the educational opportunity
if you can.

George

PS We host our website on our own server.

One question I would ask depends on whether or not you have pepl

I tell you what, no one can say that I am not good for
something. I have torking people off down to a science. My
intent was not to cause a problem. It was merely an
attempt to let some of our techies know that there are still
some of us less talented tech people that need to have
more sessions like George brought up. In my 8 years here
at PP, I have, and I know others also have, experience the
big time effect. That is some of our techs that have tried
to push us little guys around and make us think our little
issues are not important. Unfortunately I was not hired on
my tech background like some of the FULL TIME techs. It
is said that we are all equals..we are, just in different
areas. The tech meetings sometimes do not meet the
criteria of some of the smaller schools. That is totally
understandable. We are in the minority. My email was not
meant to insult anyone. As for the agenda of the meetings,
it does meet the need of everyone ( which is impossible to
do). I just hate to bring up some of the simple problems
that will make the tech gurus laugh. And yes it does
happen. They feel the same way that I feel about some of
the topics. The flavor issue comes up. As for the tech
meetings, who does not enjoy listening to Jon and
George.that is free entertainmenthaha. Ok, on a
serious note, I apologize for the email. The good news is
that we now hav s SUP who is doig a great job at trying to
budget our technology to get us up to speed. Never really
had that guidance before.

So all in all, a lesson learned that I should have just kept
my mouth shut. For those of you who know me, I usually
do. Whoops, my bad (as the kids would say).

Have a great day.

topics for anyone running any flavor of nt. I asked him to expand what he
would cover and he responded with the email below. Right now the plan is
to go from 9:30 to 10:00 general info and from 10 to 12:30 on his topics, break
for lunch, continue in the afternoon if necessary. Ive decided to
cover tabletpc topics on another day. Jeremy said he will try to
answer everyones questions and keep it understandable for
everyone. He knows that there are individuals that have been running nt
server for years and some that are just starting. I know Im
interested in all 3 of his topics and for an old guy like me that would be

 Ive
had responses from quite a few people already and would ask that you respond if

Here are some things I will touch on:

1) Using Windows Server 2003 to image and deploy your XP
Workstations.

I will walk through how we in Fort Dodge setup and configure a base image
on our workstations. I will then show how to copy that workstation
image up to your Windows server. From there, we will boot a
new machine from the network, copy that image down from the server, and be
ready to go. In 10 or 15 minutes, your new machine is configured and ready
for people to use. Software required to make your Windows server create
and blast out your computer images is free when you purchase Windows Server
2000/2003. So you probably all ready have what it takes to do this.

Software we deploy on our machines, XP Pro with SP2, Office
2003 Pro, Flash/Shockwave, Quicktime, Acrobat Reader, Inspiration 7, Sophos
Anti-Virus, Deep Freeze Enterprise, VNC (free remote control), BGInfo (free
desktop Wallpaper with system info), a printer script to install printers and
set default printer (free).

2) A brief update of Microsft new Windows Update
Services. This isa free tool to deploy security patches, service
packs and software enhancements to all your Windows 2000/XP/2003
machines. You can also deploy Office XP/2003 patches and updates, along
with some server software such as SQL and Exchange.

3)I will bring my Technet Plus binders and show them
what they get when they purchase a Technet Plus subscription.

Other than that, that should be more than enough for the
morning. Add what you want, and delete what you don't want. I will
do what ever you need me to do. Should be a great time!!!

[info-tech] server 2000-03 and OS X

2005-02-08 Thread George Tuttle

Techs,

 We
can host an OS X users group on the 25th as well. A suggestion
would be to run Server 2000-03 in the morning from 9:30 to 12:30 and OS X from
1:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon. Im sure that there are a number of
people running both platforms. OS X users would need to bring their own
equipment because I dont have one but I wouldnt think that would
be a problem. We dont have school that day so there would be
plenty of room for everybody.

RE: [info-tech] Food For Thought

2005-02-08 Thread George Tuttle
Mike,

That's the exact point of having the users group meeting. It
would be entirely separate from tech coordinators meeting. There's
absolutely no pressure to attend or stay away. It's all voluntary. It
just happens that some of us running Windows Server thought it would be
a good idea to get together and share information period. I will have
the meeting on the 25th for those that are interested. Whatever happens
after that remains to be seen. Our roles have changed over the years,
more toward the technician side. Some of us are truly tech
coordinators, some are technicians, and some are both. That's where the
rub lies. There's two sides to our jobs, technician and tech
coordinator. They should be two different people but usually are not.
I need to serve both roles. The tech coordinator meetings are great for
that side but leaves out a lot of the technical side because of what we
use is so diversified. That's why I thought that having just Windows
Server get together on a voluntary basis would be the answer.
This whole thing started out by me asking if anyone would be
interested in attending a Windows server meeting and its gotten entirely
out of hand. Because I sent the request out over the listserv, its
gotten everyone else to thinking. That wasn't my intent at all. Just a
chance for a few people to get together and talk about Windows server.

I think we sometimes need to realize that not all of us only wear one

that we need to open up the tech meetings to various topics that might
not be as important to some of the self-proclaimed tech gurus. There
are some of us that are not as advanced as others. I think I can speak
for some of the other smaller schools that are not as technology
inclined as others. In the defense of others, not all of us are able to
attend ITEC and other tech conferences due to the multiple hats we all
wear. I would love to attend ITEC, but don't really get the time off. I
remember on time that everyone complained that our tech meetings were
always about standards/benchmarks and things that no one was really
interested in. I guess I may be off base totally, but maybe we could
adapt our meetings and do some more realistic topics. Some of us still
use the 2 platforms and others may use only MACs or PCs. I figured that
I should express my opinion for the not so techie techs.
If I have offended anyone I apologize. Our old Superintendent once
asked how come I did not request to go to tech meetings anymore. I
simply told him that what was being discussed does not relate to our
school. Not only because we are smaller, but also because we cannot
afford all the bells and whistles that others can afford.

I apologize the venting session, but I just felt that this needed to be
said. If I have stepped over the line or offended anyone, please forgive
me. I just needed to step up and help the little people.

Have a great day.

2005-02-07 Thread George Tuttle
Steve,

We don't want to take the valuable time at our tech coordinators
meetings to go over something that not everyone is using. To me, the
tech coordinators meeting is for introduction of different products and
other topics that apply to everyone. We use JMC and we don't have
school on March 11th so we would be willing to look into hosting that as
well. Maybe we could get someone from JMC to attend. Anyway, that's
food for thought.

RE: [info-tech] JMC Meeting

2005-02-07 Thread George Tuttle
Scott,

Having it at Algona would be great. In fact, May 19th would be
fine because we will be getting ready for the new year. The 11th of
March would be open here for a different user's group. We're centrally
located and since there's no school, everything is basically open,
including all of the labs. I don't know how many are running Exchange
Server but that's one topic I could learn a lot from a users group.

Thanks,

Interesting - I did a Google search for a

it. We are considering not actually using this in the classrooms but just
in the halls. Can the volume be set loud enough so that people in classrooms
can hear it? We have an intercom through our telephones so we do not need
that part.

and intercom system

Techs,

After our middle school and high school were merged last year, we ran into a
problem of two schedules and also some rooms that had no intercom system.
I found and have tested a program called bell commander that allows sending any
bell sound (wav file) and can be used as a one way intercom to any room that
has wired or wireless network access. We will be installing it in 22
class rooms in the near future. Anyone with a similar need is welcome to
stop by and take a look. The cost per room is $140 for wired access, $190
for wireless access + $299 for the bell commander program. (you can
download and try a full version for 30 days) The intercom system can be
used for delivering announcements because it stores and sends the entire file
before playing it so its not broken up by high network activity.
The bells and intercom can be zoned because each receiver has its own unique IP
and name. Any questions, give me a call @ 712 335-4848.

Ah, the perks of being Mayor. Our city offers no such deal, as this
would be a new set of runs. Or is it because I'm not the mayor?

The city estimated about 2400 locates a year, with the preponderance in
the summer - which makes sense - summer being home improvement time.

[info-tech] Schools interested in digital projector quantity purchase

2004-04-26 Thread George Tuttle

Techs,

Sorry about the late notice but
I now have in my possession an INFOCUS X2 and an OPTOMA 732 projector but need
to send them down the road tomorrow afternoon. There are pros and
cons for both of them. I'm going to schedule a noon meeting tomorrow
(Tuesday) at the Pizza Ranch in downtown Pocahontas for anyone that can make
it. I realize that its a short notice but I just got them in today and
need to send them on tomorrow. I also need to make a decision because we
would like to get ours ordered asap. Anyone is welcome. Both
projectors are priced at around $900. They both are DLP, the X2 1500
lumens and the 732 is 1400 lumens. You don't need to rsvp because I'll go
to the Pizza Ranch at noon and if anyone shows up I'll have company for dinner,
if not, I'll have a nice quiet meal by myself. BTW, we're talking a group
bid on about 100 projectors.

Thanks,

George

  Techs,

   Sorry about the
late notice but I now have in my possession an INFOCUS X2 and an OPTOMA 732
projector but need to send them down the road tomorrow afternoon.
There are pros and cons for both of them. I'm going to schedule a noon
meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Pizza Ranch in downtown Pocahontas for
anyone that can make it. I realize that its a short notice but I just
got them in today and need to send them on tomorrow. I also need to make
a decision because we would like to get ours ordered asap. Anyone is
welcome. Both projectors are priced at around $900. They both are
DLP, the X2 1500 lumens and the 732 is 1400 lumens. You don't need to
rsvp because I'll go to the Pizza Ranch at noon and if anyone shows up I'll
have company for dinner, if not, I'll have a nice quiet meal by myself.
BTW, we're talking a group bid on about 100
projectors.

  Thanks,

  George

Have you gotten a bid for X-stop.

I haven't received anything and was wondering if you have. If you did was
it thru Heartland or someone else?

We have a Ricoh copier which will do high speed document scanning. The
problem is that it comes out as a PDF file and we can't edit the document.

If your scanner can save as a TIFF document or you have a high speed
document scanner, this software is free and it will convert your scanned
documents into a word document.

I had been searching and I have tried some, but this is working best for
us.

I got quotes for OCR converters for our Ricoh from $250 to $3100 but this
free one has worked better than all of the ones we tried.

I can't power a projector by batteries so the power strip will be plugged
into the wall in case the battery fails. Our board is technologically
aware enough to know about tabletpc batteries. They are also aware
education isn't free and they are willing to make a financial commitment
when they are convinced of the value of the investment. Steve commented
yesterday that he thought Apple was developing a tabletMAC.

What about the cost and life of the batteries? I think that is a huge
issue that gets avoided when proposing laptops of anykind. Did you include
that in your proposal to the board?

Re: [info-tech] tablet PC's

2004-01-13 Thread George Tuttle
Same price as a similarly equipped laptop but much more functional in an
educational setting. When we get them and the training completed, we'd be
glad to show you how they work just in case Apple decides to make one. Rick
Maehl set in on the demo to our school board last night and could give you
an unbiased opinion on the tablet's functionality.

 Tablet PC's ...HM

The only real argument that I have heard vocalized for the purchasing of
tablets in the school settings came from one of the special education
staffers last year when the AEA had vendors show their wares in case there
was funding to purchase new machines for the staff.

She claimed that in tablet position, it would be unintrusive when talking
to
parents or students, much like a legal pad for note taking, yet you would
still have access to all your computer apps like a laptop, without the
 divider of the screen.

I thought that made great sense, but if that is the only reason, then I
really do not feel it justifies the cost difference, but then again
Pocahontas has money to burn right George. How about sending some my way.

I guess I do not have to worry about the tablet question until Apple
decides
 to make one.

[info-tech] Post Calendar

2004-01-13 Thread George Tuttle

Techs;

I now have a server outside of
my network running PostNukem and Postcalendar for you to try out. Its the
best online calendar I've ever seen. It uses WAMP(Windows, Apache, MySql,
PHP). Relatively Easy to set up. Postcalendar runs as a module in
Postnukem. Postnukemis a great way to run a school web site by
itself but add postcalendar and WOW!! The URL is http://206.72.43.57/postnuke/html

You will see a calendar in the
middle that will be empty until you or someone else adds categories and
events. On the right side towards the bottom is a place for you to sign in
with full management rights to postnukem and postcalendar. The user name
is admin and the password is aea3+5 Then
you can add categories and events to the calendar by clicking on
submit at the bottom of the calendar. You can also click
on Administration on the left side to see all of the stuff in
PostNukem. You can change lots of stuff. All I ask is that this is a
PG site so keep it clean. If you really mess things up or you see that the
site is really messed up, send me an email and I will reset it back to original
so you can start playing again.
 Ifa number of people
areinterested, I would host a workshop where you would bring a machine
running Windows XP Pro and we would go through adding all of the pieces to get
postnukem and postcalendar working. BTW, some places have paid big bucks
to get a site like this set up. All of the software is free to
download. The management of the website is the real strong point of
Postnukem and the ability to sort events by categories is the real strength of
Postcalendar. Have fun.

[info-tech] tablet pc's

2004-01-12 Thread George Tuttle

Techs,

 We're considering adopting
tablet pc's for all of our staff. The model we are looking at is the
Gateway 275E. I went to Sioux City for a demo last year and thought that
tablets made a lot of sense but the price was around $3000 which didn't make a
lot of sense. Now the price is about half of that. The 275 is a
laptop that swings around and becomes a tablet also. Anyone else looked at
tablet pc's? Any gotcha's ??

[info-tech] WAMP

2004-01-05 Thread George Tuttle

Techs,

 Anyone using WAMP?? Stands
for Windows, Apache webserver, MySql database, and PHP scripting language.
Apache, MySql, and PHP are normally in the realm of linux or unix. I
installedtheir windows versionson an XP pro machine along with a
free website management program called postnuke. Also, has anyone worked
with postnuke. They are awesome and deserve a better look. Hate to
re-invent the wheel, so if anyone has used any of these, I would appreciate some
feedback before I invest a lot of time (very little money) in pursuing them any
farther.

George

BTW The radars are in place but I haven't
received any license numbers.

Re: [info-tech] Computer Programming

2003-12-01 Thread George Tuttle
Jackie,

I taught programming for many years and tried different langauges and
always came back to QBasic. It gives the user all of the basic constructs
that apply to all languages without a lot of clutter. It can be found in
the oldmsdos folder on Win9x and ME installation cdroms. Be sure to copy
over the QBasic help file. Students can be writing programs the first day
yet is powerful enough to use for anything else. There is a lot to learn in
Visual Basic that has nothing to do with programming but just to make things
look nice. If you're interested, I think I stll have most of the stuff I
used for teaching QBasic. Students will also need to learn some MS-Dos
which will be invaluable to them in the future.

OK, I have just been informed we are offering Computer Programming next
semester (mid Jan), and that I am the lucky one who gets to teach it.
So, what I need to know is What do I need? . . . . I have had
recommendations to go with Visual Basic(?). I am looking for textbooks
needed, software possibly--any information at all would be helpful.
Thanks in advance to anyone with any information!
