KR> Great Plains Strobe Kit
Mike, I hope you take no offence to my suggestions or comments. I mean to judgment. I find that many times when I get stuck on something that I simply need to step away for a little bit or get another set of eyes on it. I then commonly find some minor thing I over looked. In case like this I may find a solder joint that is cold or a solder pad that has lifted from the circuit board or even a zener diode that I inadvertently installed backwards. Let me know what you find. KR> Great Plains Sale! Limited Time!!!
This is very interesting information for us VW guys. If you can trust this information to be acturate, this is a major technology breakthrough. Although it seems that the technology is not that new, it may be just now be being applied to the aircraft world. I have always wondered about the roughness of the castings of the VW jugs and thought the billet stuff would be better but this information far exceeds what I would have expected. It looks like these jugs answer all of the needs, more power, better heat disapation longer TBO and so on. Does anyone out there have experience and real world data on this? And then it makes me wonder. Could a guy build a better VW using a scat block, the right cam grind and crank combined with these jugs and get a better, stonger VW in tyoe 1 or type 2 form? KR> turbo
I too have been fascinated with turbo power to as you say, to release the genie. I have a 2.2 turbo Shelby Dodge 4 banger that I was able to do lots of research and therefore modifications to get a pretty reliable 360 plus HP. I also have other turbo charged sport racing cars. My desire to apply such knowledge to a VW or other aircraft power plant, is not only the control of the boost, i.e. waste gate, but I have more concern on how to properly control the air fuel mixture. This is because the fact is, when you increase boost, you directly effect air fuel mixture. To much fuel and we all know that washes the cylinder walls and we quickly waste the piston rings, if the air fuel mixture gets to lean. then we experience burnt valves and if it is to lean we can burn a hole in a piston in just seconds. Of course the other issue is the higher air temps of the mixture, that's of course is why intercooler's came to be. But an intercooler is not mandatory. In the early days of turbo charging, the fuel mixture was a major source of engine failure. The advent of computer controlled air fuel mixtures, better metering of fuel by fuel injection, better intake systems designed specifically for turbo's, map sensors, O2 sensors and so on. All these technologies allowed for letting the genie out of the bottle with greater power and more reliability. Of course all those great technologies come with much greater complexity and of course more weight. If I was building another plane and it was a lot bigger then a KR2, I would not be as concerned. However, all the turbo systems that I have seen associated with a VW for an experimental airplane, all looked to be of the older technology. Not what I want to fly behind. I certainly do not want to be tooling around the sky without the needed gauges and systems to monitor a turbo and therefore making me wonder? Is my engine running to lean, is it running to rich? Is my turbo developing 5 lbs of boost or is it developing 20 lbs of boost? As I say, I am fascinated by this subject and would enjoy hearing more from what Orma and others have done and learned. The problem was that ther was magnetic interference with it in the panel. I made several phone calls to them and I believe I worked with a guy named John. Re: Réf. : Re: KR> Vertical Card Compass
Man is the internet cool or what, Here I am conversing with a guy in France. I remeber back in my young days as a boy growing up on a farm, that the idea of communicating with someone in France was either by ham radio or by being in the service and getting stationed in Europe. OK, so some of the simple things in life thrill me. Remember , I said a boy growing up on the farm. Did I mention poor boy on the farm. Ok, to your subject. Magnetic shielding is a thin metal that I believe has a high amount of nickel in it. It is somewhere between aluminum foil and really thin sheet aluminum. You wrap the insturment in your panel that is causing the magnetic interference. The shielding must be at least 1.75 inches away from your compass. The method of finding the interferring source is to hold your vertical card compass in your hand ( level) turn on your master switch and radios. Then while holding your compass, pass it near all of the itmes in your panel and watch and see which one causes the compass to ms behave. Then wrap the offending insturment with the shielding material and wire tie it. Obviously this would be on the back side of the insturment. This seemed to work fine for me. You can buy the Magnetic Compass Shield ( MU Metal) can be purchased directly from Precision Insturments or from Aircraft Spruce. The part number is 11-00973 Hope this helps Jeff York Lexington, KY KR-2 Flying N839BG Home page http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/ My KR-2 http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/Airplane/ to see my KR-2 Email jeffyor...@qx.net - Original Message - From: "Serge VIDAL" <serge.vi...@sagem.com> To: "KRnet" <kr...@mylist.net> Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2006 4:22 AM Subject: Réf. : Re: KR> Vertical Card Compass Thanks for the info. KR> weight and balance standard KR2 tri gear
OK, I have lost my paperwork on figuring the weight and balance for my standard KR2 tri gear. What paperwork I can find, I can not figure out my own notes and its important enough that I do not want to be guessing. With all this CG talk lately and the fact that I have made a few changes over the last few months. I re weighed my plane but i can not remember what my moment is or how to figure the WB and CG. Everything I find seems to be for figuring it on a tail drag KR. What I have is 252 lbs on each main and 180 on the nose, no fuel but 3 qts of oil in my Vw2180. Can anybody out there help out a suddenly brain dead? Jeff York Lexington, KY.
KR> Die Hard KR folks at Sun N Fun
Technology is great. I sit here in my van in the middle of the camping area at Sun N Fun. Thanks to Sprint's new EVDO technology, I can get high speed wireless internet connectivity out in the middle of a field. So I thought I would just drop a line to give an update on the KR's at Sun N Fun.I seen Bill Klapps plane and I seen one other. The numbers seem to be going down each year. However, this is a pretty big place so there may be others I did not see. Brian Kraut hosted a BBQ at his campsite. I believe there where about 8 KR people there. Lots of great stories and of course, Dana Overall provided the entertainment with stories of fanciful flight and other escapades. No, I did not get my KR here as I have not been able to subject it to higher outside temps in order to assure myself that I have the oil cooling situation fixed. I also have a slight mis at 1100 RPM. It smooths out above that. A few words of advice from Steve Bennet of Great Plains and I think I know how to solve that squawk. Hope to run into a few more KR people tomorrow at the Great Plains forum. Jeff York N839BG Lexington, KY.
KR> N357CJ is now an airplane
GREAT, COOL, GREAT, CONGRATULATIONS!! I too am working toward getting in the air, well I am working to get back in the air. I finally got N839BG back together. I have been doing some taxi work and practicing holding the nose wheel off the runway and generally getting back to ground handling and so on. With all the changes/ upgrades/ fixes or what ever you want to call them, I had a few minor squawks. One CHT not working, landing light inop Card Compass still needs a little adjustment but over all it runs well. Of course my mission at this point is to find these things and make sure I use the taxi testing to work them out, as well as to get back to the feel of the KR. Also want to burn off that old gas before it goes back in the air. I have been working all week at getting my bi annual done but the weather and scheduling has not allowed me to complete that. Hopefully the weather today will cooperate and I can get in the much needed air time. I have decided to rent a 172. Can not seem to find an instructor willing to do this in my KR. Probably all the better as that would be a test of the CG envelope, probably not smart. However, I have flown it with 2 adults. Both of us where pretty lean. Me at about 170 and he was only about 145. If all goes well, N839BG will be back in the air today or tomorrow, weather and pilot proficiency permitting. Then get in as many landings and flying as possible and make it to Sun N Fun. Jeff York Lexington, KY. KR> a little rough, a little miss @ low RPM
My Great Plaines 2180 VW has a little miss at low RPM 1100 or less. What I might call a bit of a stumble miss but very slight. By 1500 RPM or better, everything seems fine. It seems to me that it has always done this but I will ask for advice giving you as much information as I can. Running a single mag ignition, autolite automotive plugs ( they are the substitute for the Bosch WA 8 plugs GPAS calls for) narrow gap .028 per Steve Bennets book., Zenith Carb, K cone filter. As I mentioned, it seems to me it has always done this but I am wondering if some day on final , I go to pull the throttle back and it quits on me. So I will also mention that I am burning off some older Av gas, many months old as the plane has been under various stages of getting it back together. Also, just a little note of interest. I just had Jet Hot ceramic coat my 4 into one exhaust. They do it inside and out verses others who only do the outside of the exhaust. Anyway, since the exhaust coating, I can now peg the tach past 3500 RPM verses previously getting 3200 RPM and maybe on a rare perfect day getting around 3400 RPM. I mention the Jet Coating since that is the only thing I did to the engine and then getting a sudden increase in RPM. Yes the days right now are cooler but the engine has 56 hours and has run on many cool days before. Jeff York Lexington, KY. KR> Flyng with the Angels
Bobby, As I recall, I first met your father and you, the year he lost a prop on the way to Sun N Fun. I believe it wasaround 1994. I think it was determined to be a bird strike while flying in Georgia. Your airplane and the fact that your father was flying one was the thing that solidified my desire for a KR. I believe your father spoke at a KR forum that year and discussed his prop loss ordeal. Afterwards you and your dad and a few others sat in a circle and I got to sit in the discussion. Another lasting positive impression that this KR and this KR group was what I wanted to do. I believe I got the pleasure of running into your dad a few more times. Your dad and you both took the time to be very open to me, taking time to talk with me and engaging with me in understanding the KR and the whole KR thing. Your dad was really cool. Not many people have given me the time of day in the aviation world but you and your father where very kind to put up with this anoying KR want a be. I looked for you and your dad at many moreSun N Fun's but I never got the chance to meet up with you again. I had heard you had moved to Texas with your job. Sometimes you don't realize how much of a positiveimpression you make on someone. I am saddened to hear of your fathers passing. A true gentlemen, a teacher and a cool KR guy. my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Jeff York Lexington, KY. KR> Sun N Fun head count
Just wanted to start some dialog on who is going to Sun N Fun next month. I hope to fly down but if I do I was hoping to bunk up or camp with someone. I could probably find a way to squeeze my small tent on to the KR but would still like to find out who will be there and try and get into a KR parking area. Fly down, or drive down it would be great to catch up with the KR group. Anyone out there planning to attend? Flying or driving? I want to relocate my DG/ compass back into my instrument panel. It was moved to underneath and center of the panel due to erratic behavior when mounted in the panel. KR> How many flight hours before flying KR ??
Orma, I did not realize that my asking about your story would elicit so much controversy as well as assumption that I was asking for advice or information on just jumping in a KR and taking flight.. I just wanted to hear your story. I like to compare information. I have already flown my KR for several hours, however it has been down for over a year for minor alterations and modifications. Thought it would be down for a month. That was as I mentioned over a year ago. Also my KR is a nose dragger, not a tail dragger. Several posts on the subject seemed to assume that the subject was specific to tail draggers. Again.my original request was just to hear your story. I believe each person's story has both entertainment value as well as learning value. I hope to have my KR back in the air soon but plan to probably have a EAA tech examiner/ CFI with me because of the length of time since last flight and my bi-annual is do anyway. KR> How many flight hours before flying KR ??
Orma, I think this is an interesting subject and of course I would like to hear more about your first flight experence. How did you find the aircraft to fly as compared to what you had been flying? What steps did you take to your first flight. At 60 hours I would not suspect that you had a lot of high performance time. Maybe you didn't have any high performance time. Your flight time and situation would be more common to the average KR builder who is getting ready to make his first flight verses the high time pilot who has flown a lot of different aircraft before his first KR flight. There are probably a lot of first timers who have not even been able to take a ride in a KR. Of course your KR is a tail dragger as apposed to the very common nose dragger that so many are building today. So a variation of technique and such would be expected. I am always interested in hearing more. Tell us more. KR> inch vs metric. the whole story
Every time I hear about the metric verses the American inch feet thing, (as it is being called here), It reminds me of way back in the 6th grade. Wow, I think that was like back in the 70's, or in metric would that be the 1778.00 's or maybe 1.77800's or 5.8's or 1.9 's. Oh well the 70's sounds much easier for me. But anyway, In the 6th grade or is that the 152.400th grade or the .15240th grade or the or the .16667 th grade in metric. Oh I digress. Well that teacher I had back then. Mrs. Alexander. She told us that it was only a matter of a short time before the U.S. would be adopting the metric system. As she told it, the metric system was a much more accurate way of measurement and that the U.S. was losing a lot of money in trade due to the difference in the measuring systems. Well that was some 762.00 metric years ago and we ain't switched over yet. Or was that .76200 metric years ago, or was that .8 metric years ago. Dang I'm getting confused. Why isn't there a metric calendar and metric years. Dang it all, here we are calculating time on the same dang system we calculate U.S. measurements on. The system of 12. Twelve inches make a foot, and 12 months make a year and so on. Why ain't there 304.800 metric days in a year and .30480 metric months in a year and .3 metric weeks in a year. Wouldn't it be that way if we really adopted the metric system ? Who came up with that metric system anyway? KR> Another paint update.
The paint looks great. Just wondering. You used a polyurethane. My experience with that was a great finish but a very messy and caustic chemical. I don't want to paint that in the garage at home again. I used the PPG Delran. Maybe there are safer poly's out now. For the graphics you may want to consider something I have done in the past. If you have a speed shop or as I call it a Chrome go faster shop in your town. The one here in town will make graphics for cars. You know, the one's all the kids want to put on there rice burners. They have a computer system that they can use to lay out different designs and fit it to a particular car body. With a little help they can make a basic aircraft image on the system. You can then pick and chose different graphics on different paint schemes. The computer will then cut the graphics out on colored vinyl. Then all you have to do is line it up on your plane and apply. If you want you can then spray a clear over it. Anybody installed some sort of drain valve that you can slip on a hose and just flip a valve? I had a set up like that on my Cessna Skyhawk years ago. Any pictures would help. Also, I want to replace the oil lines on my remote filter. I want to get rid of the household style plumbing elbows and automotive hose clamps and replace with AN style hose fittings. I am sitting here at home and I can not remember the hose sizes and am not familiar with AN connector sizes. Any help? KR> Ceramic coating exhaust? with cabin & carb heat
I talked to steve Bennet of Great Plains the other day about ceramic coating the exhaust. He says he has done this to his KR and recommends Jet Coat industries. Hers my question to the KR net group. When using a carb heat muff, do you need to mask off the area under the heat muff so as to not allow the jet coating in this area. I ask because jet coating is suppose to lower the temps radiating from the exhaust tubes and I wonder if this would lower the temps needed to get could carb heat and cabin heat off of the exhaust tubes. Also, I am looking to add cabin heat and I would love to get tips and any pics of cabin heat plumbing. Did you drill hjoles in your exhaust muff to get your air supply or did you use a muff with 3 inlet outlets to allow for cold air intake plus carb heat and cabin heat? KR> Ceramic coating exhaust? with cabin & carb heat
Is there enough temp difference to allow me to not have to put the temp rap back on the pipes. The temp rap seems to be drwing mosture and causing oxidation. I obviously want to get rid of the rust and prevent further rust so as to extend the life of the exhaust. Of course I also want to lower the temps under the cowl . OK, all this CG talk has got me thinging. I am getting ready to install wing tip navigation/ strobe lights. They are the Aeroflash units. I think the total weight of the power supply units is 2 lbs. Which is 1 lb per unit. My airplane is a KR-2 (not an S) with a total weight of 672 lbs. I am using a Great Plains VW- 2180. I have a 4.5 gallon header tank with 7.5 gallon wing tanks in each wing feeding the header. the CG location is 7.9 inches. WOW !! Now I do not feel so bad for doing really dumb things too. While doing some engine maintenance one day, I forgot to fully tighten one of the oil lines going to the remote oil filter. As my luck would have it, there was a big party going on at the hanger across from me. Probably about a hundred people. Of course this is part of the reason that I will blame for the dumb blunder as people where constantly coming over to look at the weird little airplane I was working on. This distraction my have been to blame for me not double checking my work. OK, that's my story and I am sticking to it. Anyway, I pulled the airplane outside, started her up and soon realized that a lot of oil was being dumped and sprayed all over the place. Even all the way back onto my car. Nobody in the crowd next door seemed to notice. However, I spent the next couple of hours cleaning up my mess. It actually only dumped a quart but with a propeller spaying it, it made a big mess. But, this is not the most embarrassing moment I have had with an airplane. That would be the day I hand propped my Varieze and the carb return spring sprung off and the engine went to full throttle. I ended up chasing the plane and getting dragged for about 75 yards. I felt I had no choice as the engine went to full throttle just as I was walking up to the cockpit. It was either drop and get hit by the propeller. Varieze's are rear engine. There was also the thought of it hitting something else or even worse taking off without me. I had a YEEE HAAA KR day yesterday, while at the same time feeling like I got a special KR Christmas present. Yesterday, I got a annual inspection sign off on my KR. As some of you know, I always like to error on the side of caution. In some ways a little bit to cautious. I always like to have someone double check my work. I feel my work is good, but I feel that a second set of eyes are always better. of course all you have to do is think about the time I forgot to tighten one of my remote oil filter lines and well, some of you out there know what I mean. It is better to be safe then sorry. Anyway, A's and IA's do not seem to be easy to come by in this neck of the woods. I even have the same issue with getting one for spam can work. But, I finally got one to come by and take a look at the KR for the renewal of my annual. I have done a lot of mods over the last year or so and it was nice to have a professional come by and compliment on the workmanship and say " this is an easy one, it'll only take me a couple of hours to go over it and sign it off" That is alI I wanted for Christmas, and I got it. KR> A little hanger flying
I was actually at a small airport back a few years ago and seen a mini max EROS in an open hanger. I thought it looked like the coolest little airplane I had ever seen. It reminded me of a RANs airplane, but I do not remember the model. Anyway, the guy had painted the EROS red. I did not get to see it run or fly as the owner was not around. For that matter there was not a single person around on the airport. But as I said , my thoughts where "man is that a cool little airplane" I used to travel a lot more then I do today. When I would be out of town on business, I would make a point of trying to find the local airport or I would actually drive secondary roads just to find remote little airports. I just wanted to be around airplanes. This habit of finding airports got me to a lot of very remote and sometimes very small airports. Most of the time, I would find the airport but there would not be a single person there. Most of the airports would have the open community hangers so I could just walk through and look at plane after plane. By the way, one of the coolest airports I ever got to was, Washington County airport in Southern Indiana. The FBO was manned by the local EAA chapter. Everyone in the chapter signed up to share their duty. The fuel pump was on the honor system and I think it had a box that you would slip you money into. The walls where cover in the torn t shirts, solo awards. They have a little fly in every fall I believe. I went a few times and it was an awesome big little fly in. This reminds me of the time I was at another little airport somewhere in Indiana. A guy flew in with a small Rans. I think it was a model S-9 or something like that. Anyway , he pulls up to me because I was standing close to the water hose. He gets out of his little plane and begins to wash it off. To wash the bottom of the plane, he grabs a lawn chair that was sitting near by. You know, one of those web lawn chairs. He grabs one side of his plane and lifts it up and sets the landing gear down in the lawn chair. He then could slid under the airplane and finishes washing it. I was so amazed by this I had to watch. We talked and when he finished, he climbed in, grabbed a pull starter, you know, like to ones you find on a snow mobile, pulls it, the engine comes to life and he taxi's off. That was many years ago and I am sure it was before I had my pilots license. Not that you wanted to hear all this but, what the heck, I wrote it anyway. I guess this is as close to hanger flying as I am going to get today. As far as the next KR gathering, yes I plan to go, but the next time I promise myself to have the KR there. I thought I was going to have it there last fall. But, I had not solved my oil temp problem, which as I mentioned previously, may not have even been a problem anyway. Oh , and on that subject, I also realized that my oil temp sensor is very close to my exhaust, so I may have even been picking up inaccurate readings anyway. So , as soon as I finish my baffling redo, I will relocate my oil temp unit also. Ok, its getting near the holidays and I guess I am getting a little sentimental. Don't ban me from the list, remember, I did mention my oil temp problem and the fact my sensor is to close to the exhaust so there may be some official KR value there. I could be interested in that type 4 engine if you part out your project. I might also want to sell my flying KR-2 as I have purchased a spam can and I could use the money out of the KR-2 to update the panel and paint . I know, you are asking yourself, why would he be interested in the engine and at the same time interested in selling his KR. If I decide I can afford to keep my KR then I would be interested in 94HP and it would seem to me that converting from a 2180 to a type 4 would be easier then converting to a Corvair. You can see the latest pictures of my KR on my website if interested, but I will say up front, this would not be a cheap KR Jeff York KR-2 Flying N839BG Home page http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/ My KR-2 http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/Airplane/ to see my KR-2 Email jeffyor...@qx.net - Original Message - From: <mfreem...@indy.rr.com> To: "KRnet" <kr...@mylist.net> Sent: Thursday, December 08, 2005 9:19 AM Subject: Re: KR> Looking for a KR2 project for sale > I've got a KR-2 in boat stage with wing spars and a Dragonfly canopy > with a finished Great Plains type 4 VW engine at about 94 hp that has > been run tested. > > - Original Message - > From: Tim Brown <timwbr...@yahoo.com> > Date: Thursday, December 8, 2005 1:40 am > Subject: Re: KR> Looking for a KR2 project for sale > > > call me at PM.(909)337-6597 > > > > --- <t...@concentricenviro.com> wrote: > > > > > Hi folks - Looking for a KR2 project for sale. > > > Preferably in the boat stage but will consider > > > anything > > > > > > Tom Bovington > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ___ > > > Search the KRnet Archives at > > > http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp > > > to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to > > > krnet-le...@mylist.net > > > please see other KRnet info at > > > http://www.krnet.org/info.html > > > > > > > > > __ > > Do You Yahoo!? > > Tired of spam? I think Kip's story say's a lot for all of us to think about. The fact that he has flown this plane for 18 years and never had this problem. Therefore this was never part of his preflight. WOW !! Sure makes me think of what I might be taking for granted or not checking. This story to me is as important as any as it makes us re think. Of course the best part of the story is that it had a positive and happy ending, and this happy ending is what has allowed all of us to learn something. KR> Re:Wet Runways in the winter
What I meant to say was that in 18 years of flying, he may have never really thought of this situation as being a problem It also brought to my mind the thought that wheel pants ( not in his situation) and other items may allow for ice build up from splashing water on the taxiways. Or in other words, it refreshes our minds to remember that winter flying brings with it additional things to consider other then just how to stay warm when we fly. Not sure if I am getting my point across but what I am trying to say that I was glad I read this because it made me think. KR> updated KR Gathing photos on my website
Just thought I would let you know. I finally updated a few things on my website. Here is the link to the 2005 KR Gathering photos I took. Here is the link http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/KRGathering2005/ Obviously you can tell I was very interested in engine baffling. As I am re doing mine. I also have several good pictures of Steve Jones KR as well may be yours in there too. I have updated pictures of my KR as well as the baffle work I am doing. I had to much air getting by my old baffling and hope to lower my oil temps a bit. If nothing else I will feel I have done all I can to improve oil temps. I had hoped to get a KR ride at the gathering as I could use the duel time and the chance to compare notes and observe someone else's temps and gauges. I keep changing things on my Kr to improve something or another and never build up any long consistent flight time between minor mods. Then the minor mods end up taking way to much time. You know the story, job, wife kids. Extra time is very difficult to come by but then again, we make our priorities. Well, now I have a Cherokee as well, so maybe I will spend more time flying. Q3 at Gathering; was Re: KR> updated KR Gathing photos on my website
Now that several had mentioned it, I do remember him telling me it was a tri gear Q2. I remember as the first Tri Q (as they are often called I first seen at Sun N Fun in 1994. I fell in love with the design as I had a Canard plane ( Varieze ) at the time. The thought of a canard with electric start and standard gear was very appealing to me. By the way, the one I seen at Sun N Fun was having it's tail glassed back on. While taxing on at Sun N Fun, an old Radial Bi Plane was taxing behind him. The Bi plane did not see the little Tri Q and taxed right up and cut his tail off. I was parked along the side of the taxi way when it happened. I was yelling at the Bi plane driver to stop. I guess he did not understand what I was trying to say. Fiberglass went flying everywhere. The guy with the Tri Q was from Iowa. One of the demo tents volunteered their time and effort and was able to put on a very good demonstration of their product while fixing the Tri Q. The guy flew it home at the end of the week. I looked at Tri Q 's and dragonflies for quite some time but, the Tri Q had been out of circulation for some time due to a legal battle that put them out of business, and the Dragon was changing hands to often. I felt the support was not there or at least not like the support from the KR community. Ok, here's one stab though, I have never flown in anybody else's KR however. But, I have only been to one gathering and a couple of Sun N Fun's ( not the place to get a ride) I guess I want a ride because I have an itch to change my 2180 to a Corvair. But then again, I need to stop changing things and just fly. KR> reason to own your own airplane
What a cool story. That encourages me to get the baffling work done, get the KR back in the air and get my 10 year old and 12 year old back up in the air. This would get them away from the none stop playstation and computer games. It also reminds me of years ago when I had a Varieze. I thought my boys would love it. Especially since my hanger neighbor referred to it as star wars fighter. The only thing is, because the seating was semi reclined, my son could not see out while sitting in the back. He hated it. It has been several months since I last took my boy up and we only went around the pattern. I guess as Jerry would say. " It's time to quit building" So I need to quit tearing it apart and just fly. Of course that Piper Cherokee I bought is also causing me to lose focus. KR> The Fix
I had an old Ford Mechanic show that to me about 25 years ago. What a coincidence. I bought a Cherokee 150 and had one cylinder showing low compression. The engine is pretty low time. A mechanic threw out an outrageous bill. Couple of hammer hits later and what do ya know, a rebuilt cylinder for no cost at all. I have seen all kinds of so called short cut tricks in the past that never worked, but that one does. KR> Geared vs direct drive Turbo & my 2 cents
I love this subject and have contemplated turbo charging my 2180 for quite some time. I feel I have extensive knowledge of turbo charging systems as I have done extensive amounts of turbo and turbo engine work on automobile applications. However, and not to slight anyone here, I don't think I would ever consider taking a turbo from one application and believe I could bolt it to my VW 2180 or a Corvair engine and expect success. I cut my teeth in turbo experimenting with automobiles. I will also credit much of the knowledge I gained came from many individuals involved in the Shelby Dodge Auto Clubs. Here is what I learned. Or, I could just cut to the finish and suggest that if you want to turbo your airplane, start with a proven turbo and engine application and then make minor modifications as you need. But back to what I learned. With a turbo several things are critical to it's success. I would say that the most important is proper air fuel ratio delivery and the ability to monitor that. In an aircraft , this would be highly critical. I think more engines blow up ( turbo or normally aspirated) because they get to a lean mixture condition. Adding a turbo makes this even more of an issue. For that matter, anything that increases horsepower makes fuel delivery very important. So, fuel injection would be my choice over a carb on this subject. I would also install an air fuel meter. You would also need to deal with the great deal of increased heat that a turbo creates. Both to your oil and probably even your air fuel mixture. Cooling the air fuel mixture can be done with and intercooler. The increase in oil temps would be a challenge to your oil cooler and oil delivery system. You may also need to deal with the fact that when you shut off the engine, all that hot oil from your turbo will drain down to your engine , thus increasing oil temps after shut down. The most reliable automotive turbo's use both oil and engine coolant to keep the turbo cool. You also need a reliable way to regulate the waste gate. Or in other words you have to be able to keep the turbo from overboosting. Again, I believe you need to monitor this with a guage. If not you will never be able to keep head gaskets on your engine. You would also burn holes in the tops of your pistons, burn valves and so on and so on. Speaking of valves, my experience leads me to believe that you would need to change the exhaust valves on your engine as well , in order to deal with the increased temps of combustion. This goes back to the idea of starting with a reliable engine turbo combination. I could go on and on with the subject of turbo charging. I would also say that I think it is the cheapest and best way to get more ponies and torque out of an engine. I also would guess that there are people on this list that know 10 times more then me on turbo charging. But I qualify my information with the years I spent experimenting with turbo in automobiles and that I was able to take a 2.2 four cylinder engine of 140 horsepower and develop a reliable dyno tested 360 HP with incredible amounts of torque. But, I did this using a tried and tested engine and turbo combination. I was able to take advantage of computerized controls for fuel delivery and waste gate controls. I was able to write my own computerized fuel tables and timing curves to assure air fuel mixture at various RPM ranges. This was all done via Engine ECU and interfacing a laptop computer. And the whole system seems a little complex for a KR2. I also need to mention that I struggled with all the items mentioned above. No big deal when on the ground ( ok maybe a few towing bills and head gaskets and parts and such) but I sure wouldn't want to have those issues in the air. I would still like to turbo an engine for my KR2. I am still unsure of the best, lightest and most reliable way to do it. Maybe I will start with some Rev Master turbo parts and go from there. KR> Geared vs direct drive Turbo & my 2 cents
Never had a 1835 so I can not make the comparison. I am going to open a can of worms with this statement, but here goes. I will start out by saying that I am completely intrigued with the Corvair power. I love Corvairs anyway but what the WW group has done is awesome. Sure wish I could have gotten a ride in one at the gathering. But aside from that my mind keeps going back to the extensive experience the VW conversion has in aircraft and the fact that I already have one. Here comes the trouble I am going to get myself into. With the VW I just feel that there is a lot more reliable power that should be available. I make that statement partly because of all the auto racing ( I know auto racing is not flying) experience the VW conversions have. There are companies like SCAT and others that are able to get lots more out of these engines (VW) and the availability of parts are so extensive for the VW engines that there should be a little more that can be gained by this experience. I know there are big differences in engine RPM's configurations and so on between the SCAT conversions and the VW engines we use,. But I believe that there is also a lot that can be applied to the VW engines from these types of VW engine conversions. Take for example the fact that my last several certified engines ( Cont and LYC) all used very tried and true , but very old technologies in fuel systems and so on. FADAC and several new to aircraft technologies are now being implemented. These seem very similar to systems that have been in automotive use for many years. To me the AERO VEE engine looks a little like the marriage of newer technologies to the older VW engine platform. Ok, I am kinda drifting off here but I am curious as to if a marriage of some of the older tried and true VW can be joined to the newer SCAT and AERO VEE to produce a reliable more powerful engine along the lines of the WW Corvair stuff. Thus giving greater performance with greater parts availability. Now, can I still throw in there that I think what Steve and Linda Bennet have done for the VW engine is absolutely awesome Jeff York KR-2 Flying N839BG Home page http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/ My KR-2 http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/Airplane/ to see my KR-2 Email jeffyor...@qx.net - Original Message - From: "phil brookman" <p...@ntlworld.com> To: "KRnet" <kr...@mylist.net> Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2005 6:07 PM Subject: Re: KR> Geared vs direct drive Turbo & my 2 cents > hi jeff did you upgrade from a 1835 by any chance just wondered how much > extra power you gained > p > - Original Message - > From: <jeffyor...@qx.net> > To: "KRnet" <kr...@mylist.net> > Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2005 10:35 PM > Subject: Re: KR> Geared vs direct drive Turbo & my 2 cents > > > > I love this subject and have contemplated turbo charging my 2180 for quite > > some time. This morning was about 82 degrees at 7AM. There was little traffic at the airport. I started out going to get gas, and was ready to take off at 7:45. I have made a few flights since the gathering and was ready to show off my KR. Some of you may know the plane I have was my fathers, he owned it for 18 years and never flew it. I/we rebuilt it and I had made a few eventful flights prior to Oshkosh. Upon returning from Oshkosh the needed repairs were made and several flights were made. Not enough to make the trip to Mt. Vernon. My father has yet to see the plane fly. It flew the day he bought it 20 years ago. Last night while swimming in the pool I asked him what he would be doing this morning. He stated that he would be at the RC field. The field is a remote dirt strip East of the old Williams Airforce Base. I said Great bring your Radio (hand held) and I'll call you when I'm close. Well after T/O I made the 20-minute flight to his location and called him on the radio. He had to quick land and get his radio, (all observed from the air). I made several revolutions around the field and her asked if I was going to get any lower. 1500 AGL. I made 2 passes at 150 and 100 feet one @ 150 mph and one @ 160 mph as I haven't retracted the gear yet. All I heard was WWOOWWW. KR> Nose Gear question
OK, So I may not supply quite enough info for a complete evaluation but, I am going to try and get your alls advise. Yesterday when I went to rotate to take off, just at or before the nose gear lifted, I felt a pretty significant shimmy in the nose gear. The nose came up and the airplane lifted off. I decided to pull the power and set back down. I pulled the power, let the plane sit back down and upon the nose gear touch down, the shimmy came back but much worse. I was actually wondering if it was the nose wheel or something significantly out of balance with the engine. I never really looked at the air speed indicator but I looked at the tach and noticed that I still had 2200 RPM and was having a difficult time getting the RPM's to come down. I have the vernier ( screw in and out ) type throttle so I began back screwing the throttle. Everything finally slowed down and I taxied off and back to my hanger. Upon inspection of the nose wheel it appears that the bolt that appears to hold the little coil spring posts centered, has bent. Or maybe it was bent before I started. I also want to point out that the free castering nose wheel self centers when you lift up on the front end, a test I was told indicates that you have the right tension and such on the nose wheel. In testing a couple of them at the gathering, I noticed they did not self center and those owners indicated they had no shimmy issues. By the way that information was not meant as any criticism of anyone else's KR. I just wanted to compare my nose gear adjustment to others while there. Here is my question. Did I let the nose gear touch down with to much speed thus precipitating the shimmy? Did I do a poor preflight and this centering bolt was already bent ( Slightly, spring still looks to still be contained ) ? Is it possible that I let the plane stay planted to long and had to mush speed before I pulled the nose wheel come up? Thus precipitated the whole thing. Maybe I need to look at the nose gear at the point of the engine mount / fire wall? Your thoughts experiences? KR> Nose Gear question
Yes, It is the Diehl. Yes there is a gap space between the on each side of the bolt between it and the spring. NOt sure how the bolt would have gotten bent. the bend is ever so slight. May be moot to the subject. I am sure I was not doing 75 when I pulled off and not as high as 85 when I touched back down so it helps to hear that you have been able to do so without this issue. By the way, this is the first time my plane has done this. I also appreciate the info on your take off on your methods. This is why I was hoping to catch a ride with someone at the gathering. Wanted to get more info and feel from those flying, espesially with the same configuration as mine. I think I need to look closely at the nose gear back at the fire wall engine mount side. I have never had an issue with shimmy on mine. I have rotated at speeds as high as 75 mph and landed as high as 85 mph all with no shimmy. The spring on mine does not contact the centering bolt when the gear is lined up straight. There is (guessing) a 1/8" space on each side of the bolt between it and the spring. This allows for some free castering before contact with the spring. The purpose of the spring is to help align the nose wheel for landing. You mentioned the centering bolt being bent and I think you had to do that prior to your shimmy. With the stops on the nose gear, I just don't see how it could bend while taxiing. I can turn my plane either direction to it's limits and it will not bend the bolt. When you begin your take off roll, apply enough up elevator to relieve most of the weight off the nose wheel without taking it off the pavement. Once you establish enough speed to control the plane with rudder, gently raise the nose off the pavement and wait for the plane to fly itself off the runway. Upon landing and after the mains touch down, keep the nose up as long as possible until it settles on it's on onto the runway and continue to apply up elevator as you slow down. One thing to note is that with the nose gear, the plane will stay on the runway and not float in ground effect once the mains touch down. It will bounce on a hard landing as will any airplane. > > Mark Jones (N886MJ) > Wales, WI > Visit my web site: http://mywebpage.netscape.com/n886mj > Email: flyk...@wi.rr.com > > > -Original Message- > From: krnet-boun...@mylist.net [mailto:krnet-boun...@mylist.net]On > Behalf Of jeffyor...@qx.net > Sent: Monday, September 19, 2005 8:31 AM > To: KRnet > Subject: KR> Nose Gear question > > > OK, So I may not supply quite enough info for a complete evaluation but, I am going to try and get your alls advise. > > Yesterday when I went to rotate to take off, just at or before the nose gear lifted, I felt a pretty significant shimmy in the nose gear. KR> Nose Gear question and funny pokes and jabs
You guys are funny. On a day when I need lifting up, I can get a kick out of the funny little jabs you guys poke at one another. One week ago today, I got out sourced. Just 6 months ago I accepted the job as IT Director and was tasked to straighten up their network and relocate it to their new headquarters. A pretty significate task . So all is complete now, network upgrades complete. So now my employer kicks me to the curb. Or a positive way to look it is, I WORKED MYSELF OUT OF JOB! My employer now believes that the position is part time with no benefits. I seen this happen to my dad and I remember years ago when just about every male over 40 at my church got let go at Magnavox Government Electronics. I guess the business mind set hasn't changed in all these years. Why pay good wages to someone over 40 when you can buy to 20 something's for less then half and give them no benefits. No offense meant to the 20 somethings, I used to be one and worked hard to get up to the decsant pay scale I attained. So much for hard work, experience and dedication. So therefore, I thought the rule was you reaped what you sowed. That's what my father taught me. Call me naive or stupid and over 40. OK, so I am crying in my milk, or beer, or whatever. Keep up the funny jabs and pokes as long as it's meant for fun. I need a good laugh. Ok monitor, I got way off the KR subject on this one and I probably should not have sent it. Mark, Other then taxi testing, what are you doing to prepare for flight. Just curious - Original Message - From: "Mark Langford"To: "KRnet" Sent: Thursday, September 01, 2005 11:22 PM Subject: KR> plane's at the airport... > Jeanie and I hauled the plane to the airport tonight, and then the wings in a separate trip, one in back of my GTI, and one in back of her A4 stationwagon (we're the only couple in Alabama that doesn't own at least one pickup truck). We're entertaining our customer at work today and tomorrow, but I hope to take off after lunch and put the wings on, and be ready to fly Saturday morning. Hazel Green (M38) is only 2700' long, but even worse, is only 40' wide. Easy enough to take off on, but a little tougher to land! I'm going to fly over to MDQ three miles away and do about 20 touch-n-goes, then to the "Moontown" (3M5) grass strip (2200' long, but 160' wide) for some more sharpening of the skills, and then back to M38 for my first landing attempt. At least the hangar at M38 where I'm keeping it is very nice, complete with epoxy coated floor and Heineken in the fridge! The weather is severe clear for the next few days. KR> Anyone that could come by 27K on way to gathering
My KR has been idle for a little while. You know, started a minor modification that turned into a long project, kids, job, you know all the reasons. Anyway, I have it back together, running, taxi testing all seems pretty good but, I would like to have a second set of KR inspecting eyes. Ialso seen 220 on my oil temps the other day on a short runway low flight. I think the baffeling on my oil cooler needs modified. I have had a coupleof the local EAA members look at it with me, but they admit they know nothing about KR's or VW converted engines. I know it's short notice but I would really like to fly it to the gathering, never been to one. I would also like to have someone who would like to give me some dualsince it has been a while since I last flew. It's a beautiful plane and it flys really nice. You can see it in the completed KR's on the KRnet or on my website at http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/ My airplane is hangered at Georgetown/ Scott county airport, (27K) and I live 20 minutes away in Lexington, KY. 859-608-7366 cell. I can also be contacted via my work email at jy...@amrms.com If someone would want to stop over, I will put them up in a motel but it would be fun to have a a KR visitor stay over at my home. KR> KR2- 2180 GPAC Vw rough under 1100-1500 RPM
Ok, I am ashamed to say that N839BG has been idle for a year. But I have drained the old 100LL put everything back together and got it running again. I have noticed however that below 1500 maybe actually when you get down to 1100 RPM it sounds a little rough. Just kind of a stumble in the normally smooth sound of the engine. I have a Zenith carb with no cockpit mixture control by the way. Plugs where brand new a year ago when I got busy and let it sit. Got a feeling its a little out of time however, I can get a very clean 3400RPM static. Thoughts? Jeff York KR-2 N839BG Lexington, KY http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/
KR> Test flying and instruction
I would be interested. I am in Lexington, KY. My flying KR has been idle for a year as I made some minor changes to the cowling and got busy with other things. I always believe a second set of eyes is better then a single one track mind when it comes to almost anything, especially an airplane build, repair or inspection. If you or anyone out there would like to share a annual inspection check list with me that would be great. Let me know what type of costs and times you have available. KR> Second Flight Report
Way to go. Maybe I can get things in order and soon be back in the air Jeff York N839BG http://web.qx.net/jeffyork40/ - Original Message - From: "Mark Jones"To: "KR Net" ; "Corvaircraft" Sent: Saturday, March 26, 2005 5:02 PM Subject: KR> Second Flight Report Today, I flew exactly one hour on my KR. Again the flight was more than perfect. Outside temp was 44° and no winds with a ceiling of 12,000'. Again, I had full tanks (10 gallons in each wing). After completion of the flight, I measured the fuel burn at 5.5 gallons per hour. My maximum altitude during this flight was 5,000' with a lot of cruising at 4,000'. I did a lot of steep turns both left and right and she would hold altitude with no efforts. Again, I flew hands off in straight and level flight with no variations from where I let go of the stick. I was hands off for almost 10 seconds!!!. On initial climb at take off I held the airspeed at 100 mph, rpm was 2500, oil temp was 190°, oil psi was 40, exhaust temp was 1200° and CHT was 280°. I did three high speed passes down the runway at approximately 100'. During the dive to the airport, I obtained a speed of 175 mph, level over the runway 160 mph and when I pulled out she climbed like a homesick angel. At 4,000' and cruise at WOT, I achieved 150 mph at 2750 rpm, oil temp 190°, oil psi 40, exhaust temp 1100, and cht temp 260°. I am very pleased at how this KR handles with no surprises so far and also with the engine running as smooth as I could expect being it was the first engine I have ever completely built. The only thing is that I firmly believe I have too much prop and that I should be able to get better top end performance with maybe a 52 x 50. I have one that I will be testing soon but for now, I just want to enjoy flying for a while. I took off this Monday and will be putting several hours on the plane. KR> Fwd: [Q-LIST] Fw: CorvAircraft> Re: Interesting court decision
OK, This is the kind of stuff, that if you read the whole thing it makes you leary of doing anything to your airplane. I mean, if this guy in this story changed from a standardair filter to a high volume air filter, could this not be said to be a major modification and therefore would result in no insurance coverage. I meanan air filter change can have a direct effect in the air fuel mixture which can result in both short term results to long term engine fialure. Or at least it could be resonably argued in a court of law. ( my family is big in injury law, and no I have nothing to do with it) This just makes me think. At what point in time do these insurance companies ever say , "Well, we can't take your money" but they will certainly fight tokeep from paying a claim. Don't get me wrong, I can see both sides of the story here, but feel that the determining factor of the crash was not relevent to the argument from the insurance company as to their willingness to pay. I guess the bottom line on this makes me wonder. Was his accident a result of a fuel related failure, if so I guess I would say the insurance company had an argument, but if the accendent had nothing to do with a fuel related problem, then I think there pointis moot. But this case is based on contractual obligation, not right and wrong. I just wonder, " Does something like this make you stop and wonder and want to think twice about the next time you go flying. And how what you did on your last routine maintenance check on your airplanecould effect the finiancial stabilty of your family and the home they live in. It certainly makes me think of the risks I am taking to my childrens way of life each time I drive to the airport. Jeff York Lexington. KY. Yes, I agree, the Varieze WAF made wing removal very easy. I had one and still have the plans. I could easily remove and install the wings by myself, but I would not say that it was so easy as to suggest you could do a quick removal to as to trialer back and forth between home and airport. As I recall, you had a couple of 6 inch bolts on each wing, with tappered caps, I am trying to recall from memory. KR> Registration Form
I did the "OR" on a previous plane with a partner. Partner died, During the long time it took trying to get the title transferred to me and after thinking everything was ok, I went to my hanger one day to find out the lock had been changed. You see my partners survivors, (wife and son) ( I am sure their attorney too) got to talking and when the word airplane was mentioned over a period of several conversations and months, they suddenly began to feel that any airplane was worth a lot of money. So hence, this airplane was worth a lot of money. So they demanded I pay to them much more then what the plane finished was worth, not to mention that the plane was not finished when he died. By the way I finished it after he died. The thing that really makes me mad. They ended up selling the plane to a guy for less then what each partner had into it. Which was by the way, about a fifth of what they demanded for me to pay them. Also, by the way, these where people, that I thought I had a great friendship with. His wife actually cried on several occasions as she told me she knew her husband wanted me to have the plane because he knew I would carry on and finish it. I am making this to long. Bottom-line, I was out an airplane, all the money I put into it and of course time and effort, hanger fees, so on and so on. I will only put " OR" on the title with a survivor, wife or son, all others will be "AND" because money and lawyers will always get in the way, regardless of right and wrong. Oh, and the guy that bought it from them. I thought he was a friend too. KR> Re: so glad to be back
Somehow either in the change of internet service providers or something, I ended up getting dropped of this forum some time ago. At least a year or so. In my attempt to sign back up , I ended up on another KR forum and got very little emails. Anyway , I went along thinking that activity in this forum had come to a near stop. I had also thought that a server for the KR net had went down and just wondered if it was never brought back up. Well a fellow kr netter corrected me in my mis understanding, thank you Mike, and I am back on. I also have to admit that children, job and other activities have prevented me from dedicating the time to my KR and avaition hobby as well. So, I guess my early New Years resolution is that I am rededicating myself to my KR. So look out. the dumb questions are about to come. Now if I can just figure out how to get my wheel pants mounted on my mains and I sure would like to build some of those fiberglass cooling baffels (snorkels) like I seen on a Sonex, let's see, I finnally got that RV-6 scoop glassed on to my lower cowling, and the cowling repainted. That looks good. What can I ask the wife for for Christams, something that I really need for the KR? Hum, that new water cooled head set up from Great Plains for the 2180 sure would be nice, 100 HP, wonder if anybody out there is doing one of those on a KR-2? Man , that Corvair stuff, now that looks cool, how the heck can I get myself up to speed on that. Love Corvairs maybe I could call it a KRvair. Just doing a lot of thinking . Wow, could I really get to Sun N Fun in my KR this year? Should have flown it down there a couple of years ago, but I can't leave anything alone and had to go tearing it apart. Well maybe I could even make the Kr fly in! Merry Christmas all you KR netter guys and gals. If you get near Lexington , KY look me up, stop for a while or spend the night.
