OK, the key is to give a birth year. I don't have AKA or married names checked. Going through all my umpteen William Linnells and giving them a birth year now sorts in date order. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy freezes and flickers.
Hello, Thanks for the replies, may be I can explain this better. I am using the split screen view, opening the same family file in both but viewing different people. In one file (person), I am opening all the screens to get to and view how I wrote the source details. Not copying/pasting anything. I then close all the screens in that file, then open the other file and go to the same person and hand type the source data I want. No screens are left open as you can't do anything else without closing all the screens. I should also say, this flickering is not the usual flickering that occurs as screens opens. My problem flickering, is just the icons and the program freezes. And it doesn't happen all the time, but 5 times last week. One time it froze, I had to shut down with task manager, restarted and did a complete file maintenance, shut it down again, normally. Then opened it up again and went to exactly the same split screens and did the same thing and it froze again! I don't know what to do, reload the program, or the recent update? Is anybody else experiencing this? RE: [LegacyUG] Adding Pictures
Joan, If you have a ton of these attached as graphic images, then my suggestion might not have value but if you have only a limited number, I would suggest using the free graphic viewer from Faststone to convert your graphic images of certificates into PDF files, then reattach as a file. This will avoid attached documents being displayed on your family view as a photo. I've used this utility for several years and convert all of my genealogy certificate images to PDF files before attaching. After this, one click in Legacy and the PDF file will open into Adobe Reader, where you can easily study the document. About the only images I regularly attach in Legacy that are graphic files are people photos and tombstone photos. One image this works beautifully with are the Texas Death Certificates, offered online as a graphic file. I just convert them to PDF files and attach. So easy to go back and review them, or email a copy to another researcher. In Adobe Reader, you can increase the size on screen, to bring up close, details on the certificate. To convert, just open your image in the viewer, do a 'save as' and select PDF. Your original image is untouched, leaving you with the graphic image of the document plus the same document in PDF format. http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm ~Mary -Original Message- From: Joan Kemp [mailto:jk...@yahoo.com] Is there any way to prevent pictures showing in miniature on the main Legacy tree? Re: [LegacyUG] List of people without pictures?
There's a back door to this search since you can't search for who has pictures. Go to View Scrapbook. Select Individuals with Tag and then click on Print Multimedia LIst. You can also select to print tagged Marriages as well as what Picture Galleries to include (Individual, Events, Marriage, Marriage Event) This will give you a list of those who do have pictures linked. Then you can go to your Name List and untag everyone who has a picture linked, which will leave you with a tagged list of those with no pictures linked. First, with Legacy closed, go to the Legacy folder on your hard drive. Delete the RptProbs.usr and ProbsList.usr files. If that doesn't help, go back to the folder, delete the two files again and then go to the c:\Legacy\Data folder (or whichever folder you have your Family File stored in) and delete the .PPL file (it has the same first name as your Family File). Then update to the latest build of Legacy if you don't already have it. I found that ordering the quantity of Potential Problems 'taxed' my laptop. I eventually cleaned it up, by 'checking' only one problem, doing repair/clean/ignore on that list. Then the next. I had over 1000 for my 26K database. Re: [LegacyUG] Text/Comments versus Scanned Image
Priscilla, You do not *need* to do anything in any specific way should you feel it a waste of time/space, or you have a better way of doing things. To answer your question: I don’t, but if there is an important point (not very often!!) then I will add it, but if it is *that* important I might add it to the Event Notes instead. I will never duplicate information in both Events and Sources. Re: [LegacyUG] iPad 2 and Legacy 7
I bought the bluetooth keyboard and, at the risk of sounding goofy, it changed my life, at least my life with Apple. I think it tripled my use, even non keyboard. I shove it in my purse with the iPad2 - probably not for you. The magnetic cover for the iPad2 is in the drawer and I have a cover with a built in hand holder and a stand. I run Families on the iPad2 and the iPod, have not tried to enter info but I am currently on a trip which includes research so that will be happening. The iPad 2 is much more practical from a readability standpoint, but not so portable. I'm toying with the idea of buying a bluetooth keyboard and case for the iPad 2, as it will be much more portable than my HP TouchSmart Tm2 laptop. Carrying an iPad 2 is somewhat awkward without some sort of handle, and that's a priority for me when I buy a case more enclosing than the magnetic leather cover I bought with the device when it was new. I've got jury duty the end of September, and plan on taking it with me there, so I hope to have a new case, and probably a keyboard by then, which will increase usefulness of the iPad considerably. There is some increased display ability on the iPad versus the iPhone, with 5 generations visible in pedigree view. Now don't tell me off because this is not about Legacy per se. It is Legacy which has created the need. Like Jenny I spend a lot of time typing and for a pick and pecker that's a lot of effort (although worth it) Olwyn From: ge...@cedarbank.me.uk To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Text/Comments versus Scanned Image Date: Sun, 21 Aug 2011 21:19:46 +0100 On 21/08/2011 16:51, Priscilla Glasow wrote: Do I need to type an entire document's contents into the Text/Comments tab in the Source Detail if I've scanned the document and have it linked to the source? I didn't bother to enter the full text version if I had scan of the document attached, but following one of Geoff's webinars (1) I have been doing so because Geoff said that he did this so that all the text would be available if he sent someone a Gedcom. I am not Geoff (in case you hadn't noticed!!) but I find ABBYY Screenshot Reader (which I think might have been recommended by a LUGger - many thanks) very useful for quickly copying text from web pages to Legacy. So useful, in fact, that I was prepared to pay for it! By chance, it happens to be the free version of ABBYY OCR software which came with my scanner and I use that for documents. I also find FreeClip (which I have recommended here before) a real timesaver. I have lots of little chunks of text that I use frequently (such as Census dates, templates for entering info from Certificates Registers, the numbers titles of oft-cited FHL films) stored in FreeClip and paste them into the relevant fields in Legacy as the need arises. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Re: [LegacyUG] Tree
I have to say that this is probably Legacy's major, and most serious, drawback. I have all the different branches of my tree set up in Geno Pro (rather like tabbed Excel spreadsheets, with neat hyperlinks back to my 'master' tree), and although its a faff to keep the two programmes (Legacy GenoPro) in tandem, anytime a relative wants to see where they fit it, I can print the relevant branch to a pdf file send it off to them - which works brilliantly. I also find it very helpful to look at a real, visual, 'family tree', with all the relatives, on a screen (can zoom around) and see how the generations match and link together. RE: [LegacyUG] Adding Pictures
No Kim, it doesn’t. I attach all PDF documents to each individual person for whom the documents apply. This way, they show up all in a row when I click on the photo icon, making it easy for me to see what I have collected. Go to one of your entries that has a person photo attached. Pretend you are going to attach another photo for this person but Click on FILE instead, then browse to a pdf file somewhere on your hard drive and click on it to SELECT it. (it won’t matter what the pdf file is as you will remove the attachment as soon as your experiment is over) Now choose OPEN, and when the next screen opens, you can add a caption, etc. if wanted. I usually put in Death Certificate, Marriage Certificate or something that will quickly indicate to me what the file contains. Now click on OK. You will see the little file icon in a slot in the Picture Gallery. Now click on “Print Photo Album” and then click on Preview. On screen, you will see that the only thing that prints in the photo album are the photos. Now simply highlight the file icon of the PDF file you just attached and click on Remove. All is back to where you began. For me, to see the documents quickly and easily and to be able to attach a copy of the PDF document to email and send to another researcher, right from Legacy, is a big plus and time saver for me. Hi again. I'm sure there is someone on the list that can tell you specifically how to tag the ones you want in an automated fashion by using the FIND features or by viewing the trees. I'm thinking that you might have to make more than one pass through the database to do want you want, but it just sounds doable. Maybe someone in support will be able to help you out.
