Heh. Harry Belefonte had been a civil rights organizer/promoter for most of his
adult life. He was close friends with Martin Luther King and others.

He was definitely up there in years, for sure.

I was listening to an interview with him on Fresh Air/Terri Gross last week and
heard a rendering of his song “Matilda”. First time I had ever heard it, and
amazingly, I knew a parody of it by Allen Sherman (“My Zelda”) that was on one
of his “party” records from the 1960s that my parents had. This was (at the
time) supposed to be “naughty” so we kids weren’t allowed to listen to it. Of
course we immediately did so when the parents left the house…

I think with my 300SE the lawyer managing the estate (and I use that term
loosely) either didn’t have the pink slip or it had been lost.

Florida won’t accept cars without a title from out of state unless it’s a state
with a time limit or that allows bills of sale (GA, PA?)

I had to have a pink slip or I couldn’t get it titled in FL.

I wouldn't be be surprised if CA had some sort of reciprocity deal with other

Again, the only way you could do it is if you live in a state that doesn’t
require a title, or maybe the “title washing” services like I used.

CA won’t issue a “pink slip” (title) unless everything on the vehicle is
current.

I do *not* know, however, whether the CA government has any agreements with
other states to disallow transfer without payment of the back taxes.

Does the owner hold the actual paper tittle in Kommiefawnya or does the
state DMV retain it?  But yeah, buy the car, get a BoS, and launder it
through some other state that doesn't deal with that nonsense.

What is there to "let you have" ?

I can see if they are re-titling it in Krazyfornia, but if the owner has the
title and can provide it wth sale why would another state care about taxes owed
there?

Might be the case that the car could be impounded if you were caught with the
car there later.

I'll second that. When I was stationed in Italy in the late '90s, I
bought a '79 528i with 5 spd manual - that car positively screamed.
Unfortunately it also broke down regularly and I didn't speak enough
Italian to find the local equivalent of Rusty. I did have a great local
mechanic though, Vincenzo, who was very fast and very very cheap. When
I brought him the car for the second minor repair, he told me that this
car was not a good car and to expect more trouble. 3rd repair (more
major), Vincenzo says This is a bad car, you should look for a new
car. 4th repair (something broke inside the tranny), he asks me how
much I paid for the car ($2000) to which he replied sell the car and if
you get half that consider yourself lucky. The transmission repair
involved removing the tranny and opening it up to figure out what was
wrong, going to junkyard and getting required part, install/put back
together/install in car/refill the oil. My total bill was $175; I threw
in a pack of smokes and a bottle of jack. After repairs #5 and #6 (hey
that car was REALLY fast and my Italian red-headed girlfriend loved it)
I did sell the car (for $2000 to some Greek officer who was thrilled to
get it) and bought a Alfa sedan for $500, and it never broke down on me.

In this case, it was really a matter of the treatment of each of the
cars. The BMW came from Sicily and was not well kept mechanically but
the exterior and interior were fantastic. The Alfa came from northern
Italy (where they speak German as well as Italian) and it was well cared
for. I think that Alfa at that point in time was also making decent
quality cars (early '80s, I think the car was an '82). It had a 2 liter
4 cyl with double overhead cams and dual carbs; decent mileage and could
cruise at 150 kph all day long. 5 speed tranny located at rear axle,
handled like a dream. This particular model was very popular with the
mafia, and when I drove the car with authority people tended to get out
the way in a hurry, which the girl friend thought was hilarious.

the exterior and interior were fantastic.

Consider it all part of that 1/3 the purchase price you set aside to sort it
out. ;-) You still have a great car, and now with a new rad, one less thing
to worry about. When you get home, check all the hoses, and change what's
needed, then you will have gone over most of the cooling system.

As for doing a quick repair in a parking lot, who hasn't been there before?

The Repairs today to my car cost $11. Even when I do have to replace

You are not supposed to own one of those things. If it is out of

buy a new one.

At 09:47 PM 10/14/2007, you wrote:

That big intake manifold system completely covers the entire driver side of
my 606.910 engines.
And it's always a PITA to diagnose and repair fuel leaks, fuel injection,
and idle problems because you cannot see or reach anything on that side of
the engine with the engine fully assembled and running. And I don't think
you can run the engine with the intake manifold removed. It is not near as
convienient as working on a 617 (and I presume 602, 3 or 4 engines).

I've had limited success removing the body underside covers and laying under
the car with it up on blocks. But this feels dangerous and what you can
safely reach and manipulate from underneath is pretty limited.

To repair anything on the FI pump side, you have to guess what the problem
is, then invest a couple of hours removing and replacing the crossover and
intake manifold to change some part or make adjustment. Then start the
engine to see what effect it had. Usually you have to repeat that whole
procedure over and over until you guessed the correct fix. I keep a stock
of intake manifold gaskets to do this.

Am I going about this all wrong? Has anybody else with a '95 E300D found an
easier way to work on this side of the engine?

Hello Ned ,

I agree it's a PITA to have to remove the intake ! My 617s (126 and 123) are a
breeze to work on
as compared to the 606.

My MB tech/mechanic friend who replaced the delivery valve seals showed me that
you could start
and run the engine with the intake off if diagnosing fuel leaks. The engine did
run rough, but it
beats assembling and disassembling back and forth.

If you do find alternate methods , please share !!!

Kinda like when you have to worry about the oil in your differential
freezing solid so that it physically won't move even with the engine's
power, or if you shut the door too hard your paint falls off. (:
Those are just anecdotes I've heard from people.

Personally, the coldest I've done is way north, NY (Canton area, right
next to Canada) where it periodically hits 20 below and occasionally 40
below (F). It feels cold here at 15 degrees, but at 20-40 below, it
gets to where that first inhalation walking out the door kinda hurts,
and you get an instant chill up your pantleg. And you hope your door
locks will still move. (I would have been worried about the engine
starting were I not using Mobil 1). Most people just leave their cars
running at the store when it's that cold.

So I bet I've been through colder than most of the typical U.S., but
I'm no where's near the worst of it. (:

Inhaling through the mouth is bad, inhaling through your nose means you can

I'd say you are correct, but that Rochester isn't even that well known
for the lake effect snow. (not that it doesn't get it, but I don't
think it holds a candle to the buffalo area).
I live near Corning which is more south of Rochester and my in-laws live
between Jamestown, NY and Erie, PA which is mostly South of Buffalo.
There's almost a visible line you cross somewhere around Salamanca,
where suddenly you're in the REAL snow belt in the winter. Which
usually means that even with the traffic, the highway is covered, you
have a hard time seeing anything but driving snow, and it usually comes
down about 12 inches at a time. (as opposed to this side of that line
where it seems to come down a couple inches at a time).

I went to college in Houghton, Michigan, in the northern part of the
upper peninsula. Lake Superior keeps the temperatures from getting as
low as they do in northern Minnesota, but it also generates a lot of
lake effect snow. The worst of it tends to be around Marquette and
Munising, but the first winter I was up there, Houghton got over 200 inches.

caused premature failure of coil. FYI the engine monitor can be seen at
http://www.sterntech.com/pulsar200.php

I have not heard the end of that one yet as than in the manual for the
engine monitor I recommend placing a low amperage fuse in the tachometer

fuse and engine will still run.

I am also to blame for the valve body as that I was the one who rebuilt

the

I am also to blame for the brushes as that I did not know to check them. I
have discovered that they tend to wear out at 170k miles and have kept
several other people from similar fate, but...

Now the water pump, I might have to blame Mercedes, there was no noise

leaks

or anything. Going down interstate at 70MPH and it locks up solid, burnt
both belts off in matter of seconds. However since it was full of coolant

we

were able to get off at next exit and call for tow truck. Working on cars
for over 20 years and it is the only water pump I have ever seen just lock
up. I have seen vanes rust off, vanes come disconnected from shaft, etc

weeks for $700. Looks like the car is probably off the road for a
while. So now I either need to rush the 380SE euro conversion to the
road, or see what the heck is wrong with the 560. The engine is ready
to pull out of the 380 and the euro 5.0 is sitting on the garage just
ready to go right in. Maybe if I work hard I can get it done this weekend.

I turned off the engine, let the pressure off, restarted the engine then
added the coolant. It was not pegged anymore but still running way way
too hot. It may not have been filled up all the way, I will mess with
it some more here in a little bit. She said the light was not on and
the temp was not hot, the car was in the driveway running less than 1
min. I tried to explain how it was impossible for all the coolant to
have gone bye bye that quick without being spewed all over the ground.
There was none. Cant argue with a woman.

on. CRAP. So I slowly let the radiator cap off, it pukes steam for
probably 5 minutes before all the pressure is gone. Crap. Put more
coolant in it, with cap off is sometimes(most of the time) flows out.
Crap. Well, if the head was not screwed before it sure is now.

Okay, but I always understood that unless you think the coolant has
completely leaked out, the best thing to do is to leave the car running,
open the hood, and turn on the heater as high and hot as you can and try to
lower the temps a bit before you switch off and try to put in more coolant.

Now would be a good time to ask if this is partly or completely true, as I
have never had to deal with a full-scale meltdown like this one, only
engines running close to the red.

LoL, oh bless your soul for trying. But it can't be her fault, it's ALL THAT
DAMN CAR'S FAULT (etc.).

Shame on you, Kaleb, for not giving her a PERFECT car to drive.

Seriously, hope she did not pooch the motor too badly.

Why would the ignition coil fail on a 126?

The wife started out with our 89 560SEL, but she blew it up, so she has
had to go from car to car, blowing them all up as she goes, I cant keep
up with it all.

My problem is that my wife before we were married drove a Honda Accord, for
the last 5 years she has driven a W126. It was funny when we were dating she
drove my 300SD for a couple of weeks when her parents need her car.
Afterwards she got into her Honda drove it around block, parked it got back
in the 300SD and sold the Honda for $1000 while saying something about it
being a tin box or tin coffin.

Now looking to replace my old diesel and she wants a new car which breaks
less often. Her car has broken four times in 5 years, once the water pump
locked up on the interstate with us, once the brushes in the alternator,
once the valve body in transmission stuck and would not engage transmission,
and once when the ignition coil failed. So now she wants a newer car which
will be more reliable, keep in mind her car is in mint condition but is 18
years old and 200k miles.

I suggested a 1991 560SEL, but it looks like a minivan is in our future. I
wonder how long it will take for her to remember that not all cars are
W126's.

Trampas

RE: [MBZ] Damn women and the 300SDL

2005-07-16 Thread Trampas
Well the ignition coil was my fault. I made an engine monitor which I hooked
up to her car to test. Thus I taped into the negative side of coil to
measure tachometer. Well the wires for engine monitor ran beside seat and
chafed such that the coil wire shorted to ground. This heated up coil and
caused premature failure of coil. FYI the engine monitor can be seen at
http://www.sterntech.com/pulsar200.php

I have not heard the end of that one yet as than in the manual for the
engine monitor I recommend placing a low amperage fuse in the tachometer
sense wire such that if the wire shorts as it did on her car it will blow
fuse and engine will still run.

I am also to blame for the valve body as that I was the one who rebuilt the
transmission last, but that was about 20k miles before that problem
happened.

I am also to blame for the brushes as that I did not know to check them. I
have discovered that they tend to wear out at 170k miles and have kept
several other people from similar fate, but...

Now the water pump, I might have to blame Mercedes, there was no noise leaks
or anything. Going down interstate at 70MPH and it locks up solid, burnt
both belts off in matter of seconds. However since it was full of coolant we
were able to get off at next exit and call for tow truck. Working on cars
for over 20 years and it is the only water pump I have ever seen just lock
up. I have seen vanes rust off, vanes come disconnected from shaft, etc (on
non Mercedes) but never one lock up with out leaking or bearing making
noise, etc.
