[newbie] NIC card AWOL

2000-03-14 Thread Peter Smith

Hello peoples...

Last night I installed Mandrake via FTP. It went really well! I've installed
Red Hat a few times in the past and this was much easier.

But today, my network card isn't being 'seen.' (a 3COM Etherlink III
35C09b). Lothar, at least, doesn't see it. DHCP lookup (I'm on a cable
modem) doesn't see it. LinuxConf says its set up...

The only thing I can think is, I yanked an Aural PCI card out and stuck in
an old SB AWE32 ISA card. Maybe I hit an IRQ or address conflict? But I'm
unsure how to check that in Linux... the soundcard works fine...

Thanks for any advice!

[newbie] Video Card

2000-03-14 Thread gesteve

I'm just considering installing Mandrake 7.0 and have never used Linux. One of
the required items for installing is a VESA 2.0 compliant graphics card. I have
a Matrox Mystique card. Can someone tell me if that meets the requirement? The
following is from the documentation for the card:

"The MGA Windows 95 driver supports monitor profiles from either the Windows 95
monitor list or Matrox's own monitor list. It also supports Plug-and-Play
monitors at the VESA DDC-2b level."

Thanks,

Garland

Re: [newbie] Swap

2000-03-14 Thread NightStalker

Ok, maybe it is working... But I'm confused

KPM (Process management in KDE) says no swap, and I had my memory pretty
full earlier but swapon -s didn't show any usage. In 6.0, I pretty much
always had some swap usage. I just went in to DrakConf/Hardware Config
(didn't know this even existed until a minute ago) and it said I had
swap and some was used (I didnt set anything, just looked). I checked
swapon and low and behold it now says some was used too. But why
doesn't KPM see it? xosview didn't see the swap until now either.
Maybe DrakConf triggered something. I do know it just made my computer
slow as shit switching windows in X so I think I'm going to restart X
now...

Any thoughts on this or the HD performance?

Re: [newbie] SB Live Configuration

2000-03-14 Thread Rial Juan

Got mine running, but with a few probs too. The soundcard worked out of the box,
but broke down after a kernel recompile. In the kernel-source tree
(/usr/src/linux) I noticed a subdir called "emu10k1". Tried to recompile that
and reinstall, no go.

So I just downloaded a standard kernel from kernel.org, and compiled that one
(read the kernel-HOWTO if that sounds like chinese to you), and then compiled
and installed the creative labs driver I downloaded from the web. It now works
like a charm.

Broke automount though, since automount needs a patch applied to the kernel, and
I never bothered to look for it on the net. I'm used to mount my stuff manually
for more than a year with redhat, so automount is not really much of an issue to
me. Perhaps more stuff is broken, but my system works without problems, so
whatever...

[newbie] Swap

2000-03-14 Thread NightStalker

Could someone post their mtab and fstab entries for their swap
partitions and/or any information that might help me get mine working in
7.0?

I've tried mounting that partition in a directory I created and got "fs
type swap not supported by kernal". Am I missing a kernal module?

I tried to post a message here earlier but I don't think it posted, here
is the body again and excuse me if its a duplicate:

Hi, I just installed Mandrake 7.0 and am having trouble with my
swapfile. I know I specified it in the install, but now it's not set
up.

If I try to manually mount /dev/hda7, mount returns "mount point swap
does not exist". Should I creat a directory /swap for this to mount
in? If not, where? Why wasn't this automatically done by the DrakX?

Also, my hard drive performance has diminished since installing 7.0.
hdparm reports buffered disk reads <4 MB/s. In 6.0 I think it was ~19
MB/s. I have an WD 1366AA which is Ultra66. I don't recall doing any
tweaking when I installed 6.0.

results from swapon -s:

FilenameTypeSizeUsedPriority
/dev/hda7 partition 265032 0 -1

my fstab:

dev/hda7 swapswap 0 0

---

I'm sure this is something simple but I'm feeling stupid. All other
distros I've installed set up the swap correctly so I never had to do
anything until now.

Thanks

[newbie] SB Live Configuration

2000-03-14 Thread Brian Sieradzki

I just installed Mandrake 7.02. After a lot of
effort, everything works except my sound card. When I
boot up it says "Can not locate module sound." When I
run /usr/sbin/sndconfig it detects my SB Live but then
says "Module used for your sound card emu10k1.0 is not
in your module search path. Please verify that your
kernel modules are configured correctly." I've tried
using the RPM that Dell has, but that failed. I then
tried downloading the driver from Creative Labs. That
didn't work either. Any ideas?

Have you looked in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file, at the Pointer section
- It should look something like this:

Section "Pointer"
   Protocol"MouseManPlusPS/2"
   Device "/dev/psaux"
   BaudRate1200
   ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

Are your values still valid for your hardware? (ZAxisMapping only if
wheel btw) Is your device still in the /dev directory? Do you have a
mouse in console mode?

Running XF86Setup (as root) might help restore this file if you don't
want to do it manually. Maybe make a backup (cp XF86Config
XF86Config.backup) too before doing anything.

Phewy, I have never had to read sooo many messages on any of these NEWBY

answered some and read all and did the reposting, I downloaded 51

learn something from all of this.

Re: [newbie] Drive Full?!? (please respond this time)

2000-03-14 Thread Wayne Petherick

If you are using nortons it will dump your infrequently used
files at the end which will give your partioning software the impression
your drive is full.  Try either telling it to place all files at the
beginning (or alternatively, none at the end) or remove it and then run
normal defrag which is a little more time consuming.  It thinks it
is doing you a favour by doing this but it is a pain in the ass.

You probably have all of your drive partitioned already. (This is always the default if you don't do the partitioning yourself)  Get a non destructive reparation tool (Partition Magic) and try that.

Hey Everyone,
I keep trying to partition my hard drive so I can use Linux, but when I do so, it says that the last cylinder of my drive is full. So it thinks my entire drive is filled up, which it isn't. I have a 27.3 GB Hard Drive which I've maybe used 5 GB of. It's definitely not full! I need help!!! PLEASE!

Re: [newbie] Drive Full?!? (please respond this time)

2000-03-14 Thread nodyak0

Linux/Mandrake 7.0 comes with Power Quest Partition Magic and Power Quest
Boot Magic as well. I cannot say enough good things about Partition
Magic, it performed flawlessly but I had some trouble with Boot Magic.
That could be my problem. DO RECOMEND the Partition Magic though for
repartitioning for a DUAL boot system with WINDOWS 98 as the other
system. I did several different installs to see which one would work the
best for what I wanted. Lnx4Win, LiLo, BTMagic, etcetera and found
'lilo' to install and run faster than the others and was easier to setup
and use.

Thank You for reading my ramblings,

[newbie] Xscreensaver & Root

2000-03-14 Thread Lane Lester

I want to run Xscreensaver when I'm logged on as root, and it refuses to do
so. It works OK when I'm logged on as a user. According to the man page,
there's a way around this, but the assumption is that I'm running xdm. That
made me realize that I don't know which ?dm is running, x, g, or k! I did a
just-about-everything install of Mandrake 7.0.2 with an automatic startup
of X. Can you tell me which ?dm I'm running?

Chrisif your bios supports scsi booting it'll have an entry
in the part of the cmos set-up where you set what device to boot
the system. But your scsi card has to have a bios that allows

[newbie] 3com NIC install and then xDSL setup

2000-03-14 Thread Zachariah Heyer

Hello,

Any help on this would be greatly apprecitated (I will gladly return help
on micro$ucks OSes - or if anyone wants some curtis mayfield mp3s - that
could be aranged).

I have want to set up internet access to my linux PC. I would like a walk
through from start to finish and I will provide many details. Hopefully
there is someone you guys know who has set up a PC with this NIC on USWest
DSL through a Cisco675. If not maybe I can piece this all together.

I have a 3Com Etherlink 10 PCI TPO NIC (3C900B-TPO) and have Mandrake 7.0
installed. I downloaded the 3Com driver from 3com at
http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linuxdownloading.htm
and read all about the installation in the readme and install files, and at
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html
but,
I get to where I think I know what to do , but then can't find "gcc" in
order to compile the driver into my kernel (hope fully that makes sense).

So - since I have gotten to an impass, I would like some one to maybe start
at the beginning with me and make sure I've done everything fine.

Feel free to email me - or - if you have a nice step by step, then for sure
you should post it here for all the nice folks

It must be because you don't provide the right package name to rpm :
If you install xmms, you'll type : rpm -Uvh xmms-0.9.5.1-7mdk.rpm, but this is
the name of the FILE containing the package. The package name itself is :
xmms-0.9.5.1-7mdk.

If you want to uninstall this package, just typing 'rpm -ev xmms' is enough.
(But you can also type xmms-0.9.5.1 or xmms-0.9.5.1-7mdk) But anyway, the
".rpm" is NOT part of the package name.

For further details, take a look at "maximum rpm" available at
http://www.rpm.org

You do not have to uninstall from the same directory, but you do have to do it
as root.

Did you install the packages from a binary rpm?

What kind of messages does "rpm -qa" return, it should list all of the
packages that you have installed.

Is it possible that you clobbered some of the files in /var/lib/rpm/ ?

You probably have all of your drive partitioned
already. (This is always the default if you don't do the partitioning
yourself)  Get a non destructive reparation tool (Partition Magic) and try

  Hey Everyone,
I keep trying to partition my
hard drive so I can use Linux, but when I do so, it says that the last
cylinder of my drive is full. So it thinks my entire drive is filled up, which
  it isn't. I have a 27.3 GB Hard Drive which I've maybe used 5 GB of. It's

[newbie] Atalk with Mandrake 7

2000-03-14 Thread David O

I would very much appreciate help getting netatalk to work with Mandrake 7. I have
intalled from the ISO CD image. Unfortunately, that CD does not contain a version of
netatalk. I therefore downloaded and installed the RPM package listed in the Mandrake
WWW site.

The package appears to install and run correctly. In fact, one can see the Mandrake
machine as an AppleShare server from my Macintosh's Chooser. Unfortunately, I cannot
succeed in logging into it, no matter what username and password I try. (I *can*
successfully connect as Guest if I enable a guest directory.)

It seems as though the problem must be a disconnect between the way Mandrake and
netatalk are treating passwords, probably to do with the "shadow" password system. I
would very much appreciate help curing this problem.

Best wishes,
David

[newbie] Netware in Mandrake 7

2000-03-14 Thread Lane Lester

I want to hook my Mandrake box to the Netware server at work. Someone
directed me to Caldera for Netware stuff, and I found some instructions at
mandrakeuser.org. But it's for 6.1, and I'm hoping that Mandrake has
advanced beyond needing to rely on Caldera for support.

Is anyone using Mandrake 7 on a Netware LAN? If I got the two systems
connected, how would I know it? What do you put in fstab for a network
drive? Etc. etc.?

2000-03-14 Thread nodyak0

ENOUGH, please use your good sense of HELP for us NEWBIES and just ignore
these that think they have to FLAME others or be FLAMED themselves. Our
analysis of them is irrelevant and unnecessary. Pass over their FLAMES
and go on with your lives and ours. I know it is a little difficult at
times, to ignore, but give us, as NEWBIES, a big BREAK. We can over look
this type and find what we are looking for to go on.

I would like to thank ALL that are here to assist us with our learning
problems and our attempts to get a leg up on Linux/, what ever
the type of OS you are working with. I do think that Mandrake is the
most forgiving and the easiest to learn and use for US Newbies. I am so
new I have NEWBY, NEWBY, NEWBY in front of my access.

Now I have a question, what is required to correct the problem with the
nfslock FAILURE when booting up/w an error code of 101 showing as well?
I had a problem the other day that my system locked up and would not
recognize my KBD nor would the mouse assist in any way. The only
solution was to use the RESET button on the front of the TOWER. Now I
have this prob/w the nfslock and even linuxconf --status and linuxconf
--update will not correct nor even assist in HOW to correct this PROB.

Any ideas?

don

I thought I knew that I knew what I thought
But now I know that what I thought I knew
Isn't what I know I think I thought I knew.

[newbie] Getting MIC to work in LM7.02

2000-03-14 Thread Jaguar

Since most of my requests for help have thus far been ignored...a few have
replied and I thank them for their input. ( I wonder if most people have
consigned me to their email bitbucket???)

In NONE of the distro's that I have installed (RH5.0, Slackware, MDK 6.0/7.02)
has the MIC worked. I know the sound card works as I get the correct sounds
during/after SNDCONFIG. The MIC remains "red" in the Sound mixer. Is there a
box I click to enable, or something in the sound setup? My sound card is
integrated (Cyrix 233 kit board) but recognised as SB compatible. I know
Linux doesn't like the DialPad.COM web site, as I guess Linux Nutscrape is
not supported there. As a side note...has anyone tried and was successful
getting PHONEFREE.COM to work on MDK 7.02?

I have other problems also...but that can wait till I get this one fixed.

TIA

[newbie] Install hangs in "second stage install"

2000-03-14 Thread J. Hartzelbuck

Friends,

I appreciate the help offered here.

I have been trying to install Mandrake 7.0 without success. I have tried
booting from CD; booting DOS, then switching to CD and using
autoboot.bat; I've tried a boot disk made with cdrom.img. In all cases,
things go OK till the message:

 "CDROM --- Initializing CDROM
  -- in second stage install -- "

(CD lights briefly, then no more; cursor just flashes and
 stalls.)

I have downloaded the new autoboot.bat from the "FAQ, last minute
changes" web page. Not sure I handled this right, the instructions were
not clear to me, but I renamed the file as patch.pl, saved it to the
boot disk, then when the boot prompt came up, instead of pressing
, I typed "Linux patch." This worked differently: I got an eror
message at the point things usually stall, saying that some characters
were in the wrong place and some things that were expected were not
found.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sir, the issue is one of tact. One thing that it took me many years to learn
is that, no matter how correct I might be, no one will "hear" me while I am
on a rage. An insult does not teach or instruct, it not only turns off
your intended audience, it turns off potential allies. A useful technique might be
to imagine yourself in the position of your intended audience, and read your
e-mail as if you were the recipient. There are effective and ineffective ways
to tell someone about the use of manuals or the use of a subject line. May I
suggest that the negative response you've received from others on the list
could be used as an indicator that your effectiveness could be improved.

[newbie] More ethernet/sound problems

2000-03-14 Thread tymanthius

Ok, I made a mistake - I booted to Windows 2k. Now sound is out again.
Windows uses irq 9 for my ethenet card (tulip driver).

According to /proc/pci irq 9 belongs to my eth card. But I can find no way to
pass that info to tulip.

If I try insmod tulip irq=9 it tells me that is not a valid paramater.

I'm wondering if I can force Winders to use irq 5 . . . .

[newbie] some minor help

2000-03-14 Thread bill kinsey

I'd first like to thank all the gurus and helpful people who helped me get this
far. I'm writing my first email on my freshly set up mandrake box and I have to
say that i'm on my way to telling winblowz to kiss my a$$. I have a couple of
minor bugs to work out though. The first question is: Is linux capable of
running multiple mice. I use a ps/2 trackball and a touchpad on seriel port 1.
Right now i'm only able to work one at a time. The second is: Does linux have
any features that resemble the micro$oft accessability tools like sticky keys
or toggle sounds? I'm asking because my next task is to intigrate linux on a
schoo intranet and there are students that require these devices to
successfully type.. The third question is how can I change my login from the
standard type to the graphical interface. I know it involves changing something
from 3 to 5 but i'm not sure what. Thanks in Advance

Bill Kinsey

[newbie] missing lib files.

2000-03-14 Thread Lovister Lausin Jeffery

Hi there,
    I just
downloaded some program to plot mathematical functions.
The name of the program is
ksciplot-0-3-2-2_i386.rpm.
But when I try to RPM it, it
complained about a bunch of missing files.
    Namely:
libkhtmw.so.0

libkdeui.so.0

libkdecore.so.0

libscript.so.0

libjpeg.so.0
    I also tried another program
called kplot-0_2-33_i386.rpm but this one
    only complained one missing
file, libjpeg.so.6
    I am currently doing some
work and this programs can help me alot.
But where do I find those
missing files?

Thanks in advance.

[newbie] installing linux and windows

2000-03-14 Thread Benito Noriega

Hello

I have been trying to install linux mandrake and windows 2000 on an athlon
PC with a 20GB Hard Disk and 128MB of memory. I am only getting constant
errors on the size of the partitions or that it cannot place the LILO on
the MBR. Could some one indicate me the right way of partitioning the hard
disk to accomodate both linux mandrake and windows 2000.

Thank you very much.

Re: [newbie] Where is the so called help???????

2000-03-14 Thread Rial Juan

Just 2 things:

a) The only point I'm trying to get accross is to try and help yourself before
asking others to solve your problems for you. That means: read the
manual. It's written on purpose, you know?

b) Read the original post on which mine was a reply. If he calls us dumb because
we didn't answer his questions, is it then so bad when I say he makes a
pretty stupid remark by saying noone wants to help?

For some reason whenever I open my mouth to correct someone, everybody starts
flaming me. What the heck is wrong with telling people to try and solve their
own problems before they ask for help? What the heck is wrong with stating that
administrating linux is _NOT_ for people with no technical background
whatsoever?

But then again, for some reason my opinion is not the most popular in
teletubbie-land, so I get all the flames and insults. When I help somebody out
on the list or in private, nobody seems to notice, but when I tell someone to
read the manual before asking for help, or to use to-the-point subject lines
instead of "HELP", or to stop flooding the list with complete offtopic BS, I'm
the great nazi-enemy. Well, good. I'll be your nazi-enemy for you to step on.
Hope it makes you all feel so much wiser and tougher.

2000-03-14 Thread tWiTcH

Ty, a couple of questions:

1) When you did the reinstall, what SCSI driver did you choose? I know,
silly question, but it's good to double-check.

2) When you boot off the boot disk, can you mount partitions that exist on
the SCSI drive?

3) At what point during the boot process do you receive the kernel panic?

4) Since you didn't reinstall LiLo, is it possible it's not pointing to
the correct partitions (since your partition scheme may have changed)?

I may not be on the right track, but these are the first things I thought
of. I'm sure someone else may have something else to look at...

don't I guess). But my emergency boot disk (learned THAT lesson already!!)
works fine. So how do I get lilo to see my scsi hd?

Was the edit done as root? Did you then run /sbin/lilo? If you don't run
/sbin/lilo from a command line, the changes will be ignored.

Make sure that there is only one append line in lilo.conf. I couldn't get it
to work in mine because it already had an append line. Here is how I got it
to work. Lilo.conf had an append line of: append="ide=scsi" (for CD burner).
I edited the line to read: "append="ide=scsi mem=128" , ran lilo, rebooted
and all is well.

Do you have any other items that you're "append"ing? Seems to me I recall you needed
to keep
the appends on the same line ie append="mem=128M","something_else","more_stuff"
although I
don't recall the exact format. You can check the archives though as it was discussed
SEVERAL
weeks back.

Check your /etc/fstab file to make sure your drives have assignments there.
They probably look like

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto defaults,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0

The cd rom assignment will depend somewhat on your particular disk numbering

Well said, Joseph. If linux is going to reach the wider market we don't need
people like him pontificating to someone who is just starting. Some of us, me
included, will never be experts but we can still achieve a lot with the system.
It's also very nice to repay the help received when we first started.

Michael,
Yes, the quotation marks are around the 128M and i can't think for the life of
me why it doesn't boot with the lilo.conf file.
If i do it manually, it will boot, if it try to boot automatically from
lilo.conf it will not work with my 128M.
It did this previously with 128M but for some reason with this install will not.
I am really confused at this point why this happens.
Cheers

Did you run "lilo" after modifying lilo.conf?
The changes do not take effect until you run lilo.

When I start Linux with linux mem=128M it boots and reports 128M of ram.
When
I boot from the lilo.conf file (which has the mem=128M in the append

it only boots with 65M. Any reasons why this would be so, and is there a

[newbie] getting pcmcia linksys card working

2000-03-14 Thread hello

Hi All
I have a compaq presario 1230 laptop with a dual boot of window98 and
Linux mandrake 7.0 (my goal is have nothing to do with microsoft but I have
to use it for my cassiopeia e100 which is windows ce) and I'm trying to get
my linksys combo ec2t pcmcia ethernet card working. I did find it is
supported.

Also with linux do you have to stop a pcmcia card before ejecting it like
you do with a windows os.

I am not avare of any problems which would bring LM 7 in such a messy

[newbie] RealPlayer7 Beta with plugins is here!!!

2000-03-14 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

The new RealPlayer7 Beta is here with all the plugins is here.

Warning: There are two versions, an rpm for RedHat ALONE (it WON'T work
on Mandrake 7) and one for the rest of us. It looks great.

The address for us Mandrake folks is:

http://proforma.real.com/real/player/linuxplayer.html

Read the installation instructions on the download page (at the bottom
of the page) and for "Directory" during installation choose your
/home/user directory. I guessed wrong, but it doesn't matter.
RealPlayer7 automatically creates a "RealPlayer7" subfolder on
/home/user. You play RealPlayer7 by cd to the subfolder "RealPlayer7"
and then typing ./realplay. You can also, of course, create a link on
your Desktop with precisely this command for the executable.

1) MY BIG QUESTION: How do you configure the new RealPlayer7 in
Netscape under Applications to play RealPlayer. I typed
"home/sher/RealPlayer7/./realplayer" or the same without the ./

In either case, when clicking on a RealPlayer site, it launched
Realplayer7 but played nothing except its usual little jingle. By the
way, I did completely delete (rpm -e) the old RealPlayer G2 Alpha.

2) Second big question: For the suffixes in Netscape should you add ram
AND rpm to the RealAudio entry? So should the suffixes read:
ra,ram,rm,rpm? And perhaps some other suffixes for other plugins?

Please advise. We are all waiting with baited breath.

Yours,

Benjamin

[newbie] Fritz!PCI Card, Logi Mouseman+ with Wheel et al...

2000-03-14 Thread John D. Herron

Hello, people.

I'm a Swiss Linux Newbie altogether (installed M7 only just about a week
ago), running a stand-alone PII-450 ASUS P2B dual-boot (under LILO) Win98 /
Mandrake 7 machine with 256 MB ram, a Sony GDM 17SE2T monitor set to a
Matrox Millennium G400 32MB board, two 10G+ HDD (hda for Win, hdc for M7),
2 Iomega Zip-Drives as back-up and storage system (a parallel 250 MB + an
USB 100 MB, neither installed under Linux yet), an internal Fritz!PCI ISDN
card and a USRobotics 56k Message Modem (no problems connecting to my ISP
in M7 with the latter).
Among other things, I've been playing around with Bash a bit and enjoying
the versatility of it.
But I do have questions on a few items.
How can I (if at all)
1) use the navigation keys (PgUp, PgDn, Ins, Del...) on the numerical
keypad (not essential, but a matter of habit acquired over many years...) ;
2) use either (or both) of the two Zip drives in Mandrake (if I understand
correctly, Linux seems not to support USB);
3) possibly get the (passive) Fritz ISDN card to work under M7 (Lothar says
that M7 recognizes it as an (active) Fritz A1 card, and allows no
reconfiguration option); AVM offers no Linux drivers for that one;
4) if possible, switch between display resolutions from the M7 Desktop (by
the way: M7 recognizes only 16 MB on my video board).
5) get the wheel on the (PS/2) Logi-Mouse to work in M7 - if I read the
literature correctly, the wheel feature seems to work only for Microsoft mice.

Any help from anyone out there, please ? Thanks !

John

[newbie] Mounting Netware Drives

2000-03-14 Thread Lane Lester

When I installed Mandrake 7.0.2, it seemed to recognize my NIC, and I said
yes to Netware capability to get onto the office LAN. I'm on the Internet
OK, which I think is on a Win NT server, so the NIC is working OK in that
regard. But I don't know how to get access to the Netware server. I've
edited fstab for just about every other kind of drive, but I don't know
about Netware and LAN devices.

If it's too involved to put in a reply, please point me to the docs.

Mr. Rial Juan,

I can only say that thank God I entered the world of linux before you started
spewing forth your rhetoric otherwise I would never have become as excited about the
challenges of learning linux. It's a shame that you have forgotten the help and
assistance you no doubt received when you first started.

To the original poster, please accept our appologies as this is in no way an example
of the fine help you'll usually find here. If you're unwilling to post again
please, feel free to contact me privately and I'll do the best I can (I'm no expert
but I manage).

Mr. Rial Juan, welcome to my trash filter.

I have a DFE530-TX, but I don't use the tulip module.
Instead, the via-rhine module works fine for me. But I don't know if it will be
the case for you as it is not exactly the same chip.
To try the via-rhine module, log in as root and type 'modprobe via-rhine' in a
command line.
If it works (ie : you have no error message), edit your /etc/conf.modules file,
and change the line
alias eth0 tulip
by
alias eth0 via-rhine

And that should be ok.

rpm -e IceWM

Might get rid of it. You might want to use --replacefiles or
--replacepkgs on an update or install instead.

I think isapnp stuff is installed by default. You just need to make the
file. Check for it:

whereis isapnp
whereis isadump

I don't know the name of the rpm, but it should be somewhere on the cd
under the RPMS directory.

rpm -ivh whateverthenameis

It's probably a supermount problem. Supermount doesn't seem to work for
some systems. Check out www.mandrakeuser.org. I believe they have a
section on supermount.

Thanks for your help (also to Eunice)! I didn't think that
"imwheel -k" kills already running imwheels. Therefore putting it into
the Autostart folder should not be much of a problem.

Best regards,
Claus.

[newbie] First...apologies

2000-03-14 Thread Wayne

All,
after a bad crash this morning after trying to install my new HD I had to
reinstall Mdk 7. I have forgotten the command you add to append section of
your lilo.conf file to get it to recognise more than 65 MB of RAM. ANy help?
