Ecco qua... Io ho risolto impostandomi le variabili

percorso per il file xine-config e con il percorso
delle librerie di xine:

  XINE_CONFIG=/usr/local/bin/xine-config

Dopodiche' ricompilando mi era andato tutto bene.
Spero che risolva i tuoi problemi!! Fammi sapere.

since X isn't working you can do this from the command line by typing as root
setuptool. From the menu list that comes up you then choose display

but this time instead of formatting and installing all the packages again just choose
to not format any partitions and select no packages to install. this will take
you to the installation and setup of the display.

instead of choosing to directly support the monitor by brand and model try choosing
something like Generic Multi-sync refresh rate 74hz that can do 1024 x 768. Use the
XFree86-4.1.0 3D Accelerator package when it asks you which version of X you want to
install.

that should get you running. Frankly, if you're having as much trouble as you're
describing the last method i've outlined here is probably your best bet.

i placed nobackup there as i get irritated with all the redundant filename~ files

to practice on 8.0 for a bit first

So my question is I can use Licq as Root. I have attempted to change

well it just won't stick...

That is i go to start Licq as a normal user, it won't do it again...by

Root!?

mmm not much of a help with this problem but maybe try to use gaim. i use that with
8.1 and i find it far superior as now i can talk to friends on icq/msn/aim with no
dramas at all.

i was getting all kinds of lil glitches with licq on 8.1 but i did have it running on
8.0. unfortunately i cant actually remember what i did to make that happen sorry.

Try passing single to kernel when you are booting. Like, if you are

thanks for correcting MY typo you were correct.

Yup - I knew about find files, but I needed the right file name - I guess
maybe dmesg is what you meant, not dmseg. Assuming that to be correct,
here are the files from both the server and a client machine.

how do you shut down the computer?

dmesg in the client machine has a lot of:
clm-6006: writing inode 52808 on readonly FS
messages. That doesn't look healthy does it?

maybe a hard drive failure in your future?

Also noticed after having switched off booting into X, that startx pauses
for a while then says Host name lookup failure.

ahhh we are looking at a dns or server problem seems to me

 Anyway dmesg files are attached.
ehhh..no.

Edit /etc/lilo.conf. You will see that there is already an entry for your
cdrw like:

append= hdX=ide-scsi # where X is the cdrw drive letter

now add the same for your cdrom drive like:

append= hdX=ide-scsi hdY=ide-scsi   # where Y is the cdrom drive letter

Once you have saved your changes, in a terminal run lilo (as root):

# /sbin/lilo

Now edit your /etc/fstab file - this depends on what your fstab looks
like. For example mine looks like this:

/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/scd0,fs=iso9660,exec,--,nosuid,nodev 0 0

/mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount
dev=/dev/scd1,fs=iso9660,exec,--,nosuid,nodev 0 0

Where /dev/scd0 is my cdrw and /dev/scd1 is my cdrom. Note that I am using
a newer kernel than the stock 2.4.8-26mdk that comes with ML8.1 so I am
using supermount - yours may be different as supermount is broken in the
2.4.8-26mdk kernel. The important bit is the /dev/scdX part.

And lastly (I'm not sure if this is absolutely necessary) reboot - I'm not
sure if just remounting the cdrom will do it so I just reboot.

 Hi all,

I just had some offlist help from Vincent, and I had a thought..

Lets all hassle Mandrake to add Vincent and Civilme to the donations page..
(so we can make a donation to them for their support of the list.)

Since they give us much needed advice and assistance to both newbie and
 expert lists.
(and probably cooker too, dunno bout that one) and both have supplied
 packages
that we wouldn't have otherwise. (and example of which is:
 ftp://ftp.eastwind.net/pub/mirrors/texstar/Mandrake-8.1-i686
new packages for 8.1 that otherwise would be relagated to cooker.)

Its not part of their job description either as I understand it to do all
 this,
 so why not?

Think about it, who on this list doesn't make a point of reading anything
 on the
list from either of these guys?

Shouldn't they get a few monthly beers for their efforts?

 what do you guys think?

Just a warning to those who like using the Mandrakes Package Manager. When
your run the check for new security patches and you see the option to update
your kernel. DON'T!
Do NOT and I repeat, DO NOT upgrade your kernel via the package manager.
Learning from my 3 hr mistake! After the upgrade from -26 to -36, I lost all
networking, sound, video was crappy. You name it, I had problems with. After
trying for 3 hrs I was able to figure out what I needed to do.
Get to the commandline, run: rpm -qa|grep -i kernel
Find out what verion of the kernel is currently installed and remove it but
using: rpm -e --nodeps kernel version, then reinstall the last known
kernal that was working for you, or grab it from your Mandrake CDs.
Funny enough I got a phone call from a friend who had just install the
lastest kernel from the cooker and had the same problems. I was able to help
him out in a few minutes after learning from my mistake. But one difference
was that he had removed the kernel as explained above and then ran the the
CD as in the UPDATE mode, this was able to patchup his system with the
kernel from the CD as well.
So fair warning, Don't run the update from package manager. You have been
warned.

I shutdown by right click | logoff | choose Halt from the KDE desktop.
Problem?

The dmesg files are attached in the message that came back to me. I have
attached them again here.

Having just rebooted I see that I misquoted the message issued at startx -
it's actually something about host name unknown, but it goes by too fast to
see it properly.

Now that the server has been up all day, the client machine is super fast
right from the start. I wonder could it be a process on the server which
eventually gives up / timesout / dies which is causing these long delays?
Maybe I should set up a periodic ps aux command on the server to see if I

However, if you're asking how it will run on a clone compared to an actual

2001-12-18 Thread Miark

Actually with OpenOffice released under GPL, this might not be a bad
idea. Ironicaly it could actually increase the corporate adoption of
 StarOffice.

Why? Because there are still a lot of people who think that anything
that is free can't be any good and if it's more expensive it must be
 better.

True, however I think the bigger reason businesses are hesitant to
adopt StarOffice is because they think Sun may eventually decide that
it's not worth supporting a free product.

You were right about adding the Octal addresses. (That is Octal, isn't it?)

(I love it when I (think) I know something:) No, that's not octal, it's
hex. Octal would not have an 8 in it -- only 0 thru 7.)

Randy Kramer

That's what I get for typing when I'm tired. ;)

You're correct on that being Hex and not Octal. Onur also refreshed my
memory on that too by reminding me that Hex numbers start with 0x. I used
to do webdesign stuff and I used to convert the RGB colors from PhotoShop
to Hex manually (as in with a pad of paper, not with a calculator) to use
in my HTML code. (Yes, I was only doing it to show off, lol) In HTML though
they drop the Ox off of it though and since it's been a few years since
I've really done anything significant, I guess it slipped my mind. I used
to also convert IP addresses into Hex to see if there was a way of spelling
words and find a real website. I never did find anything and most browsers
don't deal with Hex addresses in place of URLs anymore, at least not very
well if they do. It's also hard to spell words with only 6 letters. I
suppose you could count a 0 as an O, a 5 as an S, and a 7 as a T, but that
would be stretching it. ;)

Anyway, thanks for pointing out my goof.

Ivan.

On Tuesday 18 December 2001 01:25, you spoke unto me thusly:

mmm not much of a help with this problem but maybe try to use gaim. i use
that with 8.1 and i find it far superior as now i can talk to friends on
icq/msn/aim with no dramas at all.

i was getting all kinds of lil glitches with licq on 8.1 but i did have it
running on 8.0. unfortunately i cant actually remember what i did to make
 that happen sorry.

We can tell you are new to linux, in fact still using m$-lookout for your
mail. and sending some kinda wider$ attachment to a Linux users list what
the heck is winmail.dat? it don't show up as anything but an attachment to
me. what packages do you think debian has that Mandrake ain't? you can
compile them from the source, but heck there sure is damn near everything
RPMed and optimized already for MDK.
if there is some program that ain't mdk.RPMed, let us all know what it is and
why it's good. (I know I will go get it and check it out)

 Dear All,

I am planning to buy a scanner and a printer within the next few days and I
want to make sure that I get a low-priced, easy to setup with LM8.1, and
non-USB, scanner and printer. I am planning on an Epson printer or HP. Does
anyone know what non-USB HP color printer works well with LM 8.1 and makes
 beautiful photographs?

Does anyone know what scanners that are not USB work well with LM8.1? I
see alot of Mustek in the stores where I am at. Which models if any are
 good with Linux?

Any suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [newbie] Upgrading .tgz package

2001-12-18 Thread Anuerin G. Diaz

five ways:

the thoughtful packager way (such as WineX, a very good bunch ;-):
from the old source directory, do make uninstall. these should remove the old package
and then proceed with installing the new one. be wary that dependent applications on
this package may go berserk.

the patient installer way:
check the makefile of the old package and hunt down the files put by 'make install'.
install the the new package after.

the impatient installer way:
since you have specified the directory, just remove it and hope that the application
did not put any other files on other directories. hey you should have tried the
patient installer instead of this one.

the damn-be-damned way:
just install the new package hoping that it would overwrite the previous package.

the rpm way:
find an rpm for the package. if there is no available rpm then try to learn how to
make one (im putting this one off until i have the time ;-).

take your pick!

 Gah! Help???

 Thx, Femme

Well you could check cooker to see if there is a newer version of licq. This
problem is foreign to me and I used licq quite a lot with 8.0, always as a
user. Could it be that you only have the root user set up with Licq?

In your home directory, there should be a file beginning with . called .licq
If you ran licq from a terminal first time and you were su'ed to root, then
that might have the wrong ownerships. Start up as root one more time and
copy down the account number or UIN, then delete .licq in /root and in
/home/username/ and log in as a normal user and from a terminal try licq...
It should set up with no problems.

If you still have trouble, email me off list and I will work with you. This
has to be an unusual situation and I would like to know more.

Seems obvious to me that the best way to deal with this is to email the personal

for Gary that was supplied, and ask him to sort it. He probably didn't think about
changing his subscription address. Had you done this first, it may have been fixed in
hours, maybe even minutes.

If something like this bugs you, you should take action, show initiative, save us the
hassle of having to delete both the autoresponders email and your many complaints. We
all
have our pet hates, and if we all got motivated in those areas and got something sorted
and fixed, we save others the minor irritation of having to set up rules to ignore the
problem.

Like Mark Weaver, my pet hate is hoax virus warnings, they really get up my nose, and I
really get up the nose of those foolish enough to send them to me. What a waste of
time

Also, they cast so much FUD on new users. (my 71yo Mum is a brand new user)

MySQL makes a nice interface that you can run in X, but it helps if you have a little
bit of database knowledge. There's also MySQLman that works nicely to configure and
maintain databases. it uses a web interface that allows you to browse, select, update
and anything else you'd do with a MySQL database from a command line.

I've got both of them and if you like I can email them to you. shoot me a message off

RE: [newbie] Warning for newbies, learn from my mistake

2001-12-18 Thread Franki

huh???

ok, maybe its because I have the cooker rpmdrake and MandrakeUpdate that
mine looks for kernel stuff and installs it instead of upgrading it..

in that case...

MANDRAKE 8.2 UPDATE WILL NOT UPGRADE YOUR NEW KERNEL,, IT WILL INSTEAD
INSTALL IT SEPERATLY SO YOU DON'T CLAG YOUR INSTALL.

You are a little off.
In 8.1 and earlier MandrakeUpdate Will Update the kernel Not Install it.
This is why the old kernel then no longer exists.

When the new kernel is Installed then both kernels will exist.

RE: [newbie] Upgrading .tgz package

2001-12-18 Thread Franki

does 1.0.tgz have an uninstall script in it?

Its probably a source package, so you are not just installing or upgrading
it, you are probably compilin and installing it..

is there a readme or install file in the tarball? you need to have a look at
that, usually if there is a possible upgrade they will detail how to go
about it in one of those files..

Its also possible that just compiling and installing the new one, will over
write the old one.. so you may not have to do anything but compile/install
the new one.. I don't like doing that unless its the recommended way because
you could always be leaving old files in you new install, and that would
annoy me endlessly.

Hello my fellow Mandrake Users! =)

How will I upgrade the installed package in .tgz format? For example, I
installed a package-1.0.tgz in a certain directory and I want to upgrade
what I installed with package-1.4.tgz. How will go about it? I am using
Mandrake 8.1.

Thanks in advance!

Advance Merry Christmas to all of you! =)

RPMs which needed dependencies might not have been installed in SUSE. As
regards sane, older sane were one application. Nowadays it comes with two
sane-backends and sane front ends. Those who want t use xsane, front end is
not necessary.
This is once again application specific.

wondered why such a thing happened, so I put the mandrake disk back in
and when I got to the partitioning tool, it showed no partitions at
all, they were all gone, it wiped out virtually everything except hda1.

Well I proceeded to partition and finally install mandrake, I started

wanted to remove some rpm's and install different ones, and all I got
was dependency problems left and right. I tried and tried every way I
know, but it seems that when I wanted to remove 1 RPM from Mandrake, it
wanted to remove the whole Operating System.

At this point, I totally gave up, stuck my SuSE install Disk in and
   went back to SuSE.

The way I see all this is, with Mandrake, you don't have much freedom.
If I cannot remove an rpm and install the .tar file instead, then I

I'm not sure about the slicker install or souped up. I lost
Windows installs on two of my machines (Win98 and Win2000) because
Mandrake 8.1's installer trashed my partition tables without giving
me a way out, so I went back to Red Hat 7.2 and had a much better
install experience. I use System Commander 7 as a boot manager, but
Mandrake's installer wouldn't support writing the boot code on the
Linux boot partition for another boot manager to pick up, it
absolutely insisted on writing it's boot block to the MBR, which is
not polite, and more to the point, is not compatible with System
Commander.

I'll try Mandrake again this week, because many people have a very
high opinion (I'm still subscribed to this list, obviously).

If someone does know how to instruct Mandrake's installer to put it's
boot block on /boot (folks seem to call this a superblock,
apparently), please tell me - I'd really like to give Mandrake a run
- but please don't tell me to trash System Commander: I've paid for
it, I like it, and it's friendly to my family users, who don't want
to have to learn anything else :-)

Dennis: I'd appreciate if if you could forward this to the newbie list for
 me. Thanks!

On one of my boxes I've run out of room on the / partition but have lots of
room on the /home partition. Is there a way to resize my partitions so as
to put that free space where I need it? I'm using ext2.

Look here:

http://linux.msede.com/ext2/

The ext2resize facility is now combined with ext2end which expands live
filesystems.

You need temporary storage so you can cafely copy away the one you will
shrink (cause it may shrink from the wrong end) then you can use ext2end to
expand / without dismounting (which you cannot do anyway unless you are
booting off a rescue disk, which won't have the ext2 resize facility).

Yes, folks, you really cannot umount / unless you use the chroot command in
which case it is moot, since you cannot then access the original / any longer.

ext2resize is on the 8.1 CDs though it is still a use at own risk category.

 Warren

I had the same prob just today, I don't know what caused it and will
follow this thread but I fixed it by uninstalling gmc which I don't use
anyway. When logged in as a user I use the file manager ( su mode ) if I
want a file manager that is more than konqueror. after all , If I'm in
kde I run Kde. if In Gnome run Gnome. but that's just me:-)

Kinda a hammer approach I know but it let me sleep.
( plus you can always put it back when the solution is found. )

Anytime gmc is launched in a wm that supports desktop handlers and icons
then gnc will dispaly the gnome icons.
This will now occur anytime the same wm is started.

To prevent/change this when this is not what you want to occur you must
'Exit' gmc.
This is not accomplished by just closing the the program, that still
leaves the actual process running.
In gmc from the Commands drop down menu select Exit.
This stops the process and the icons will disappear.
