At certain times the Freeserve Anytime system is heavily used and you may
notice that automatic repeated attempts to dial in are logging BUSY in
the log window. Eventually the connect limit may be reached and then
manual action to reconnect is required. If this sequence is repeated
several times then you may see BLACKLISTED in the log window. This is an
action taken internally by the modem (not Freeserve getting annoyed
because you are trying too hard to log in!) which will automatically
clear after a time period - the intention being to limit the load on the
telephone network. It may be possible to send an AT data sequence to the
modem to display and/or clear the blacklist.

dispositivi ... tsk tsk):
1) metti in lilo.conf, all'interno di un append
devfs=nomount
2) disattivi il servizio devfsd (come disattiveresti ogni altro servizio o
demone);

mknod nome tipo major minor

chi desideri utilizzare questi driver alternativi.

OSS.

http://archive.oltrelinux.com/archive/html//linux/2002-12/msg00804.html

[newbie-it] OT: Compilazione Lame in Windows

2002-12-15 Thread Di Fresco Marco
Ciao a tutti,

compilatore ho Borland C++ compiler versione freeware).

potreste rispondermi in privato.

Grazie in anticipo.

Thx Anne. However my experience has been... Odd.

after all, giving out addy's for our comps here. Fine... Install went OK,
it couldn't update packages but I expected that. Rebooted into linux, it
was fine. No internet. That was my first clue something was amiss.

Fiddling with things with both the expert novice controls I found out
that I had to disable DHCP/Bootp enable a static IP addy. WTH? Makes
no sense, and I had to put in gateway DNS numbers (the routers IP
sufficed here). Yet in Winsucks it works fine as a DHCP Server!? OK
 something is amiss... but what?

Maybe that's why my setup went so easily? I do prefer static ips, and set up
a table on the router. The one laptop that connects does use dynamic, but
it's windowsme, so anything goes there. Perhaps Denis's idea is the answer

Yes it just has to be installed w/o any special config'ing.

Gaim will work with the following protocols: AIM, ICQ, YAHOO, MSN, IRC, JABBER,
NAPSTER, ZEPHYR, GADU-GADU.
I use Gaim 0.59.1 that comes with 9.0 for MSN, YAHOO, ICQ.

Stephen's suggestion of KOPETE sounds interesting in that it integrates better with
KDE. I use Gaim with KDE though and it works great.

I pre ordered my PowerPack set on the 8/11/2002 and have also received

French on the tracking page but after I clicked on the British flag the
language changed on the page to English. If the package does not get to

to but still I feel no goods=no pay.

 HiH

There was a posting at the Mandrake Club within the past two or three days
acknowledging that they have really screwed up on some of the preorders, and
that remedial steps have been taken (Sorry, buddy, you don't work here
anymore.)

Let's hope that the new CEO puts this mess high on his priority list. It could
be a real black eye for Mandrake, and they don't need that kind of publicity.
Billing a credit card before the goods are shipped is not only immoral, IIRC
it is illegal in some places. Beyond that, the credit card companies don't
like getting involved in stop-payment orders, and it's not a good idea for an
e-business to piss off these folks.

From what I have seen this is due to the package having a GHP signature and
your system does not have that sig in its memory. Like Texstar's sig. So it
tells you that there is a matching error. It is not a problem in most cases,
you can be sure the package is correct if it has a checksum number published
and you match that, otherwise I wouldn't worry to much. : )

RE: [newbie] Mandrake 9 firewall question

2002-12-15 Thread Andrei Raevsky
Thank you for everyting!

Cheers,

Andrei

gShield doesn't need an RPM..

It comes as a tarball...

unzip the tarball and dump everything in it to /etc/firewall

Then edit the one config file.. /etc/firewall/gShield.conf

(it tells you exactly what to do in there, most answers are 'OPEN' 'CLOSE'
or 'FORWARD')

In most cases the defaults are good...

The reasons I like it are:

1. Simplicity:.. you don't need to understand any of it to get it working
and configure it to your needs.
2. Power:, portforwarding, DMZ's tcpcookies and tons of other stuff. (but
you don't need to play with that them you don't need them.)
3. See know evil hear no evil.. once its working, it just works,, no need
to
mess around and if you need to change something, you just edit a human
readable conf file.. its brilliant in its simplicity.
4. There is a GUI configurator available on their site as well, but I've
never used it and don't need it.
5. Takes about 2 minutes from unzipping it to have a working firewall.

You can get it from : http://muse.linuxmafia.org/gshield.html

Hi,

I got my first computer with a DVD driver. I ran to the local library to

encrypted DVDs How can a commercial DVD be encrypted? Does this have
something to do with the fact that I heared that US DVDs cannot be played in

My Mandrake 9 was purchased in France, my computer and DVD driver are US,
but built in Japan...

Is there a software out there which will run encrypted DVDs (whatever this
means)?

mozilla-xft-1.2.1-3tex.i586.rpm can be found at
http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/linux/distributions/mandrake/9.0/rpms/

It is a version of 1.2.1 with xft anti-aliased fonts which was packeaged
by Texstar. Included in the rpm, IIRC, are java and flash. Use urpmi to
install and you should have no problems with dependencies.

I have been using this version since it first came out two weeks ago (it
installed in addition to the stock Mozilla that came with LM 9.0, so I
have both). I like it, except that it does not have a spellchecker yet
and like my previous versions of Mozilla it tends to crash every few
days. By that time I have 30 or 40 windows and tabs open, so I need to
clean things up anyway. Linux does not crash, of course, just Mozilla.

One thing I did, since I *hate* Flash was to find all instances of
libflashplayer.so and ShockwaveFlash.class and move them from /plugins
to a newly created /plugouts directory. No more annoying Flash ads and I
can move them back if need.

[newbie] Printer Question

2002-12-15 Thread b w
Hi, all.

I installed Mandrake 8.2 a couple of months ago, and during the install, the
system recognized my printer with no problem. Last week, we had a power
outage, and since then, the printer doesn't respond. I get an Error: can't
open output device when I use the Printer Utility Program.

I've shut down and restarted both the printer and the computer, but nothing
works... (btw, the printer still prints when the machine is booted in
Windows 2000).

Do I need to uninstall and reinstall the printer? If so, how do I do this?
Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

bw

Re: [newbie] Linux installation Router Advice

2002-12-15 Thread greg
You know, I recently had this problem on my LM9 installation, and never
managed to get my router working with it. You probably will, but I
could not be buggered trying any more. It beat me like a dog! But this
is something I feel Mandrake need to really address, as my Red Hat
system configured automatically, be it with a dhcp setting on my router,
or using a static address. Never phased it one bit. I have never
needed to touch a setting in RH for the internet, and I think this is
were mandrake need to be with their install as well. I am waiting and
hoping their next release has this all sorted, as I notice a number of
people having real difficulty with it, not just me.

Ok, sorry, like I said I was behind on the thread. What linux wants is
the static IP of your computer the gateway address whether it is your

your internal computer with a 192.168.0.x type address then you should
point it at the IP address such as 68.96.13.xxx and give it the IPs
primary and secondary DNS numbers. Not real clear but the best
explanation I can give. If you have that kind of configuration then I am
at a loss as to the problem.

Perhaps it's worth giving us your configuration for the dhcp connection?
We may be able to track the problem down from that.

  Anne
 Here is etc/resolve.conf

 -- nameserver 68.13.16.30
 nameserver 68.9.16.30
 search om.cox.net
Those are the DNS IPs from my service provider Cox Cable as you can see.
My router/firewall has an internal LAN address of 192.168.0.6 but an external
address given as static by the Service Provider of 68.96.17.xxx. So I set the
gateway on my workstation as 192.168.0.6 and set for dhcp . The
firewall/router then provides the passthrough the internet and the DHCP
addresses. I do this with the MCC and don't know which config file the info
might be in to show in an orderly manner. Somebody give me a hint, cause I
am a gui kind of guy and the 10 zillion files are not real familiar to me.

I can work the reader for XCDRoast if the cd reader is in scsi emulation

sounds like your reader is not under ide-scsi

look in /etc/lilo.conf for a line with hd?=ide-scsi and make sure that
both the cdrom and cdwriter are listed, then lilo and reboot.

[newbie] CDROM troubles

2002-12-15 Thread Brandon Vanderberg
Hi folks, sorry for the FAQ. But, I've read lots of howto's and tons of
threads on the subject in various boards, and am more confused than when
I started.

The trouble is with my IDE CD-ROM burner. I'm not trying to burn at this
point, just read data CDs reliably. Right now it's hit and miss. An
example:

ls /mnt/cdrom - I see the files.
cp /mnt/cdrom/*.jpg /home/me/documents/ - Some files make it, some
don't
ls /mnt/cdrom - I see a list of files, but each says it's an invalid
file or directory.

I believe I need to switch to ide-scsi from ide-cd, but I'm not sure. Is
there a simple way to get this working? The howto's I've read seem to
require a mastery of Linux I just don't have.

I too have full use of CDROM and CDRW so this is a puzzle as to what is

I have dvd/rom and writer configured master and slave on ide line 1 ,
both on
scsi-emulation scd0, and scd1, all works normally, but not in supermount.
which is nice to have but really the alternative, semi-supermount where the
mounting is auto, but unmounting is manual , isn't much to be concerned

Re: [newbie] Digital cameras

2002-12-15 Thread Steve Jeppesen
Anne,
for what it is worth, this is what I did in order to get the .jpg and
.avi files off my Fuji FinePix A303 (early x-mas gift for the family!)

All I had to load was usb-storage, the same other two you have loaded;
usb-uhci and usbcore were already loaded - I have no idea about usb-scsi
and why it is working for me without it.

I created /mnt/camera as stated before (although I am not sure if this
was really needed because after a re-boot I had /mnt/removable somehow
also) and then while the camera was turned on and connected to the usb
port I rebooted.

I ran dmesg just to make sure after the system booted up and it did id
the Fuji camera.

Then I mounted the contents of the cameras memory;
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera
(even though while browsing /dev I did not see sda1) and all the .jpg's
and 1 .avi file I took with the camera were buried in a couple of
sub-folders inside/mnt/camera

I have been following the list here on this subject and would not have
been able to get as far as I did with out all your help list members. I
plan on using the script that someone provided earlier, but noticed I
will have to update it to match my requirements. That is another day in
the future.

Not too sure if this is any help - just pointing out what worked for me.

Good Luck.

Steve

I'm also very confused about how Mdk handles these special devices.
I wrote to this list that I had lost my LS120 which had been sda,

desperate enough to start a paid Expert session, though that has not

another thread, but I can't understand what has changed. After all,
I've been away and no-one else has been using the machine. So it
  begs the question

How does a special device get recognised?
What can be done to initiate this process?

As I said earlier, my LS120 is sda, so I expect the camera will
become sdb, but it's not there. Am I presuming wrongly? Should I
  be looking for something else?

Following a comment from John, I tried cat /proc/scsi/scsi with the
 following result:

The final entry must be the camera, I think. Under /dev I see my

dmesg seems to see it, it certainly lists enough devices, but doesn't seem to

You can type startx at the console to start your XWindows with KDE...
Then you can use the Mandrake Control Center to set it up to boot into a

I use Gaim 0.59.1 that comes with 9.0 for MSN, YAHOO, ICQ.

No, I believe that's a startup script which links to wherever mozilla
is installed in. You can try starting mozilla in a console by just
typing mozilla, but I'm not sure if it'll give you the correct
warnings. Does it give you any warnings? Else you will have to find out
where mozilla get's installed in, and try directly accessing the binary
via the console. If there is a right-problem, it should warn you... or
if it's the java plugin you installed, it'll tell you some more info.

 type the following:

Where you have a limited number of network aware devices ( such as other computers,
printers, etc ), it is not necessary to have DHCP as a server OR as a client. All
devices can be configured with static internal IP addresses such as 192.168.x.x. Where
DHCP really shines is when you have laptops or other devices coming and going on your
home network. In the case of laptops, it allows them to get a local IP for whatever
network they are plugged into. There is no need for any third party software needed
when configuring a ML router/firewall.

Hope that helps;-)

It appears that you do not have supermount runnning. It would show up in
your fstab like this:

none /mnt/cdrom supermount

So, you do need to unmount before switching CDs, then mount again.

Re: [newbie] setting default browser for kmail

2002-12-15 Thread Chris
On Saturday 14 December 2002 04:49 am, you said, and I quote:

What you want to do is to change the association for html files in
 the KDE control centre

run kcontrol (no you don't need to be running KDE as window manager to
 do this)

click on FileBrowsing, then File Associations

expand text (click on the + next to it), then select html

you will see on the right a list of browsers on your system
The one on top will be the default, if it is not found the second one
will be used. Now you can add browsers or rearrange them

I used this to set my preferred browser to galeon and that is what
loads when I click on a link in kmail

Thanks Michel, I didn't pose the original question but I've learned
something. I've been pasting urls to the clipboard and opening them with
Mozilla that way, makes it easier now with the change.

Best and most simple set is:
2 NIC in one box - one connected to ADSL - the other to the local
network.
1 NIC in the OTHER computer - using a crossover cable that plugs into
the other computer for the local network. No major costs. Simple.

I've tried to make the statement before that MCC has some issues and
that connectivity - whether it be by modem or NIC should be hard
wired...

Personally, I ditched using MCC for anything at all to do with
networking - and use linuxconf from either the console or in a
term...I've gotten much better results - aside from actually making
direct modifications BY HAND to the networking scripts...

  the Fuji camera.

dmesg seems to see it, it certainly lists enough devices, but doesn't seem
to know much about them. The 4-port hub has printer, scanner, LS120 drive

  Then I mounted the contents of the cameras memory;

Re: [newbie] looking for easy, cheap, way to share files, cable connection between two boxes

2002-12-15 Thread Brandon Vanderberg
Option 1.
You can connect two computers together with a x-over cable. This
does require a 2nd NIC in your 8.2 box.

The advantage is that you don't have to buy hub or switch. Also, you
only really need to worry about having a firewall on the 8.2 box. It
will protect the other box.

The disadvantage is that if the 8.2 box is down for some reason, you
lose Internet connectivity for the other computer. You'll also have
to configure Internet Sharing. Not a big deal.

Option 2.
Buy a hub or switch, connect both computers and your cable modem to
it. Have your cable company provide an additional IP for this second
box. I know Cox charges something like 6 or 7 bucks for the second
IP.

Some side notes - With only 3 devices on a hub, you shouldn't see many
collisions. The prices for NICs, hub and switches are so close (for
decent ones) that it's pretty much a wash as far as price is concerned.

Assuming it's not something simple like the network cable fell out
(don't laugh, I once spent an hour tracking that one down). I'm
wondering if you're having some kind of IRQ conflict. Do you have an
on-board nic or is it a pci card. If it's a PCI card, try moving it to
a different slot and see if it's detected. Some motherboards are funny
about assigning resources depending on what PCI slot is used. After
Linux boots up (whether you change slots or not), you might want to
check the error logs and see if there are any boot messages that might
shed light on what's going on.

[newbie] file types/associations

2002-12-15 Thread Angus Auld
Greetings all, I have a question about file types and associations. I see in CC in the
file associations, when you expand, say the audio section, there is a listing of known
types. What I would like to know is what the seeming duplication of types is about?
There will be a listing for say, midi, then down in the list midi will appear again as
x-midi.

I'm wondering why is there two, and, if I want to edit file type or association, do I
have to edit both, or just the x one? Is the x for X-windows or is that too
obvious? I'm a bit confused as usual. :-/

TIA for any insight on this. :-)

have something to do with the fact that I heared that US DVDs cannot be

My Mandrake 9 was purchased in France, my computer and DVD driver are US,

Is there a software out there which will run encrypted DVDs (whatever

if you can boot already, you don't need to mess with lilo..

 type the following:

 urpmi Xtart

That will install Xtart for you, which will give you a menu so you can
easily boot from any window manager on the system.

Oh yeah, and you probably mean KDE (the K Desktop Enviroment) not KDS

 good luck..

I think while installing Mandrake 9.0 I said no to boot into KDS. Now I
start Mandrake and login but want to see the GUI instead.

What is LILO? How do I use that? Do I want to use it?

I am sooo much a newbie when it comes to Linux, but I was under the
impression sda meant special device,... just a guess, but did you try
 sda1, or sda2 or 3 or 4 even? What about sdd and/or sdd1, 2, 3 or 4?
I am just pulling straws here maybe. And also, maybe omitting-t vfat
may have something to do with that? Maybe you have done something
so you can omit -t vfat when you mount, unknown to me.

No, the sd bit means SCSI disk. IDE drives come up under /dev/hd*, SCSI
under /dev/sd*. /dev/sg* seems to refer to SCSI graphical devices like
scanners.

OK - I bought the camera and went away for a few days holiday. Now I
   have to
   try to get the pics.

A) Be sure you have the next modules loaded:
usb
usb-core
usb-storage
usb-scsi
Have never seen usb-scsi listed anywhere.

The final entry must be the camera, I think. Under /dev I see my Mitsumi as
scd0 and the LS120 as sda. I have had no success yet with the Canon - that
can wait until later. Does this output give any pointers as to where I
 should find it?

Not at all sure what is going on in your system Anne - from your posts
it would appear that SCSI emulation is working. Does /sbin/lsmod list
scsi_mod and ide-scsi? The earlier tip about mounting the partition
is important (/dev/sda1 or /dev/sdb1 rather than the device /dev/sda
or /dev/sdb).

My serial digital camera needs to be set to SETUP for downloading images.
Does PLAY correspond to SETUP on your camera do you know? PLAY sounds
correct; could mean playback.

As for the error messages from your LS120 without the medium, that is
probably normal. dmesg gives similar warnings when my JAZ disk is not
loaded. Any type of drive supporting removable media should report
the same when the storage medium is absent. Are you saying that the
LS120 is not working any more or have you just now noticed the
warning messages?

Cheers
