Ho installato Debian woody sul primo hard disk e vorrei poterla avviare con lilo che ho gia' installato e con il quale avvio Win sul primo hd e Mandrake sul secondo.Cosa si deve aggiungere al file lilo.conf?(ammesso che si faccia cosi'?)o come fare per rendere avviabili i tre os? Salve a tutti, ho appena scoperto i programmi di ripping e mi sono subito istallato grep, ma con mia grande delusione non sono riuscito ad avere un file codificato .mp3 ma solo un .ogg. Ho visto che xmms non ha alcun problema a leggerlo, ma purtroppo se volessi scambiarli sulla rete mi piacerebbe averli in formato .mp3. Ho allora provato a cambiare codificatore e da oggencode ho scaricato e scelto mp3encode, ma il file creato ha un estenzione strana e non è leggibile con xmms. Qualcuno sa quale sia il codificatore giusto? Inoltre tutti i file codiicati mi vengono messi in una generica cartella mp3 nella mia home directory. Come faccio a modificare a mio piacimento la destinazione dei file? Come ultima domanda, poichè lavoro con kde, qualcuno conosce un programma di ripping e codifica on uguale fama di grep che però appartenga al progetto kde? Grazie a tutti, Tommaso

[newbie-it] visualizzare documenti in .html
salve lista, ultimamente quando vado a visualizzare documenti salvati dal web, e la stessa documentazione e howto della distro, mi viene chiesto apri con e l'unico che mi visualizza qualcosa è mozzilla (dopo averlo selezzionato dall albero dei programmi). qualcuno sa come fare per poter aprire gli .html con qualunque browser (preferirei lo stesso koqueror) e con un klik di topo? Grazie gia da ora. p.s. ultime novita sul pc sono: installazione di un atra distro , compilazione di mplayer. Grazie in anticipo!Ciao Gianni devi aggiungere la chiamata al OS in lilo...devi vedere prima di tutto come viene riconosciuta la partizione di Debian (dai da console ]$df) .poi sapere dove viene montata in MDK e aggiustare queste poche righe in lilo.conf (logicamente della mdk :) image=/_percorso_/_della_/_nuova_/_distro_/boot/vmlinuz label=Debian (o come la vuoi chiamre tu) root=/dev/hdaX (X da sostituire con il numero della partizione) vga=normal read-only anche se non ho mai visto la Debian,credo che la chiamata possa andare, in caso contrario controlla in /boot (della debian) come viene chiamata l'immagine del kernel e se non è vmlinuz (anche se non credo) sostituiscilo con il nome coretto. P.S. non assicuro che quanto detto sia giusto :)) io uso grub.cmq prova lo stesso.al massimo riavvi con mdk. fammi sapere se ho indovinato. Ciao , Tom

Ho acquistato una macchina fotografica digitale per mia figlia e, con l'intenzione di usare la medesima in ambiente Linux, ho comprato il numero 8 di una rivista (Linux pratico), numero dedicato alla fotografia sotto Linux. Per Mandrake 9.0 - la distribuzione che ho: versione PowerPack -- come primo passo la rivista suggerisce di utilizzare, ovviamente da root: # urpmi kernel-sources La risposta che ottengo è: nessun pacchettto denominato kernel-sources. Gia'... oggi ero in viaggio e mentre guidavo mi chiedevo se la configurazione di postfix che avevo effettuato fosse completa ed anche se a monte la configurazione della rete x il mio dominio fosse corretta. Alla luce di questi dubbi e della tua perplessita' credo che + tardi e dopo una buona notte di sonno, mi andro' a rivedere un po' tutto. Per rispondere alla tua domanda posso dirti che se mando un messaggio con mittente [EMAIL PROTECTED] ad un account registrato su un fornitore di servizio free tipo tiscali o libero la mail arriva regolarmente con l'smtp corretto (mail.miodominio.com) ma se con uno di questi account faccio l'operazione inversa e mando a [EMAIL PROTECTED] (nome.cognome ribadisco essere alias di un user esistente) o anche a [EMAIL PROTECTED] il messaggio sembra perdersi nel nulla... Quindi credo nn mi resti altro da fare che ricominciare tutto da capo! Se penso che lo scopo ultimo di tutto questo lavoro e', in realta', creare una lista con mailman temo che la strada sara'ancora lunga :(( Scusa se sono cosi' maldestro ma e' la prima volta che esco dalle configurazioni fatte a clicconi e ho molto da imparare. scusa ma io mi sono basato sul fatto che smtp funzionava per cui davo per settato postfix o sendmail le email che mandi dove vanno? francesco

Ma occhio il tuo dominio (per es. foo.casa ) all'esterno non esiste per cui nessuno potra mai risposndere a [EMAIL PROTECTED] solo i gli appartenenti alla vpn o cmq alla rete . Nel browser devi settare come smtp e pop l'ip dove risiede il server (192.168.1.0) . Nel caso tu volessi far ricevere la posta al tuo [EMAIL PROTECTED] non devi far altro che reindirizzare con un alias la posta di [EMAIL PROTECTED] sul tuo utente in loco e lo puoi fare configurando fetchmail sempre da webmin e poi ... se ti va scheduando il tutto perchè si controlli la posta periodicamente ogni user ha la sua email quindi... il sitema al suo interno è stabile e robusto , io per sbaglio ho mandato una email da 724 mb ed il server ( un athlon 1700+ se l'è macinata ) i clicconi sono comodi ma limitati e limitanti :)) fammi sapere francesco

I suggest that you start a new thread with a title 'Playing .kar files' or similar, so that someone with experience of them will notice the post and come back to you. There are some issues with supermount under Mandrake 9.0 - it works well for some and not at all for others, so there's a certain amount of trial and error. One thing is for certain - if you set up supermount and then manually mount or umount you will cause yourself problems, so you need to set up one option, try it out, and if it doesn't work properly go on to the second option. Option 1 - supermount. Go to Mandrake Control Centre, select Mount Points, and click on your cd drive icon. You may see that it is listed as hdx (where x = another letter depending on your other drives) or as scd0 or scd1. If your drive is a cd-rw it will need to be scd0 or scd1, so come back to us if it isn't. If it's only a cd reader either setting is OK. You will find that some options are already set there, depending upon what is already written into your /etc/fstab. You may need to change things under the Options screen. First, make sure that 'user' is selected - otherwise only root will be able to access the drive. Make sure that supermount is selected. If this is a straight forward cd reader drive, that's all you need to do. If it's a cd-rw drive, you will need to open up the Advanced tab, and unselect 'read only'. If supermount is going to work for you, that should do it. By the way, be careful to OK things, and watch out for the message that comes, rather slowly, in small type near the top of the screen asking you if you want to save your changes. Otherwise nothing will be changed. If you have saved correctly the changes will be written to your /etc/fstab. Option 2 - if supermount does not work properly for you (simply mounting and umounting as it would under windows, i.e. when a disc is inserted or ejected) then you will need to get rid of it. Simply follow Option 1 steps again, unselecting supermount. Again, be careful how you come out, making sure the settings are saved. If you do this you will need to create an icon on your desktop (right-click Create New CD/DVD ROM Device) which will allow you to mount and unmount from a right-click menu. Either way, come back if you need help. If you do, find /etc/fstab and copy it into your message, so that we can see what's happening. I want to explore Star Office 6, but am finding it frustrating that some basic things are not yet set up. I know that I want to run spadmin as root to sort out fonts and printers, but can't find how to do that. I thought I had located the correct program (under /usr/lib/staroffice/program) but when I tried that I got the setup program, as though for a new install. What am I doing wrong? [newbie] Fickle camera connection fstab
I have a Nikon 995 which downloads through the usb interface. I am having a lot of trouble with mounting working intermittently. There are times when I get a dialogue saying that /dev/sda1 cannot be found. My only way around this is to go into fstab as root through nano or somesuch editor and make a minor spacing change, save and then the ability to mount the camera returns. I have but you have gotten farther than me even. I have an external USB flash card reader that Mandrake doesn't even notice I have plugged in despite it supposedly being supported on 2.4+ kernels. Some users on list expert have helped with my fstab entries and now I can see the device in Kwikdisk (and usbview) but when I try and mount it I get the same error as you except mine says /dev/sda1 does not exist. I have done some serious reading up on hotplug and tried a myriad of solutions including transitmount with no success. I am getting very frustrated because I feel so close but nonetheless I am certain I will get it going eventually. If Star Office still works the same way as OpenOffice, then you need something like /usr/local/bin/spadmin (type which spadmin to find the correct location for your system). spadmin is one of the more annoying features of SO/OO. It would be much more convenient for it to use existing print and font utilities, but then one of the downsides of writing cross-platform applications is that you have to make them as self-contained as possible, hence all the redundancy and concommitant massive download size. In contrast, you have something like Lyx, which is a tiny program because it's largely a front-end to a load of stuff that is standard on Unix/Linux (LaTeX, ghostscript etc.), but trying to install it on Windows is a royal pain. Sounds silly, but I use dummy accounts for usenet and online merchants, so I know who spams me and violates their privacy policy. Lately I'm getting spam from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mail is not addressed to my dummy account; the mail has as the same address for the from and to fields (the sender), but looking at the headers it says: Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Received: from email1.xeno-technology.com(unknown [216.34.4.251]) by clevername.homeip.net (Postfix) with SMTP id 033125E52A for[EMAIL PROTECTED]; Sat, 28 Dec 2002 12:25:36 -0500 (EST) I suppose the ip address and domain of the sender will change and will therefore be useless as a filter rule. Latest kernels propose to recognize these deficient cpu's and make the neccessary compensations. I doubt your '1)' will work better, but might be worth a try. Older isn't a good bet tho, try RH 8.0, an 1386 distro. IIRC, Mandrake kernels, 2.4.20 (latest cooker) might be your best bet for these junk cpu's. I have looked for the files that this infection is supposed to put in /tmp and found nothing. The next variant slapper as you see is not detected. I have updated openssl and do not run Apache on this machine, so the point of this is what to check further and why would chkrootkit see this at all. Anyone have a similar readout? [newbie] Mounting a CF card in a PCMCIA card adapter
I have an adapter PCMCIA card that holds a compact flash card. Before I installed 9.0 on my laptop I was running 8.2 and had no problem mounting the card. I simply slid it in and the issued: mount -t vfat /dev/hde1 /mnt/card Now that isn't working. I put the card in and issue the same command but nothing happens. I've noticed a process called drakupdate_fstab running and using a lot of cpu time. I'm assuming that this is some how related? It looks like this in a ps: 000 S root 9458 9450 0 78 0- 2270 pipe_w 15:18 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl /usr/sbin/drakupdate_fstab --auto --add /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target Can anyone tell me what's going on and what I need to do? Usually the power is equal to the current times the voltage. You have to watch what you are using on this. As the power supply robs Peter to pay Paul. My supply (which is the model above) has 12V at 15Amps max and 5V at 35 Amps max .. (12*15)+(5*35) = 355 watts. (Generally, this is what you can use to roughly determine what the wattage of the supply). It also shows 3.3v at 20A and -5V at .5AMPS and and -12V at .5AMPS (3.3*20)+(5*.5)+(12*.5)= 72.25 This would give a total wattage as 427Watts but remember the rob Peter to pay Paul. The supply cannot supply all of the voltages at the max current as it will blow a fuse. Now, have I thoroughly confused the issue. I have never had any luck with switching to a different mouse when I try to (in 7.2 or 8.2). I start up, kudzu detects my old mouse is gone,and removes it. I run mouseconfig and choose something close to the description of my new mouse (ps2 generic 3 button trackball through an adapter to serial, I chose 3 buttun generic serial) I restart and get nothing. Hi all, Can someone please suggest which version of Mandrake should give me the best performance running the following hardware where the machine WILL have a GUI (I like them :) but for the most part will then mostly be running an ssh server sans GUI, through my router? Intel P200 on an ASUS mobo, 64 Mb RAM, 2gb HDD, 2mb ATI graphics, some 10/100 ethernet card. All the hardware seems to be standard enough to work with all versions that I have when used in other combinations. I can pick between Mandrake 8, 8.1 (download versions) and a purchased 8.2 (7 disk version). I have to mention I have a soft spot for Version 8 as it was the first of any Linux distro that worked out of the box for me, (sound and internet) and has produced the best results on another machine (450 AMD 256 RAM), appearing to be more stable than the others but I value the opinions expressed here. I anticipate it will involve something to do with which version of the kernel they are blessed with but other factors will be pointed out to me in the nicest way. I IMHO would recommend you use 8.0 if you can get it to work. I too think it is a great version, an until just today I have stuck with it because I could not get everything working in 8.2 or 9.0 so I would have to go back to 8.0. I finally got my printer ( hp 820cse ) working in 9.0 so now I'll stick with it for now. But with that amount of Memory I'd try 8.0 first. I have run it on a 486 with 48 mg or ram. I had the exact same problem with the exact same cpu (different mb no doubt, you couldn't have the pos I have). It turned out I needed more memory. Not knowing a lot about the mb or the chips I bought I'm still trying to figure out why two 128mb chips give me 65mb of memory. The happy part is ML 8.2 runs very well and installed flawlessly (keeping in mind that I only wanted a file server so no heavy graphics or multi-media stuff is installed). On the other side of the fence is the fact that I shouldn't be putting money into this old mb and I need a bigger hd anyway so I will no doubt replace the mb with something that will like my chips, find a used 20g hd somewhere and only keep the case and it's accoutrements (cdrom, cdburner, floppy). [newbie] manipulating xwindows
Greetings, My file server occasionally doubles as a guest computer. May sound crazy but it works with my setup. I have created an account called 'guest' and would like to cause the xwindow login dialog to appear from the command line without logging in. It would be as if I selected 'automatically start xwindows on startup' from the Mandrake Control Center but I want the flexibility of remaining at the command line 90 percent of the time and letting a guest into x 10 percent of the time without going into x myself, reconfiguring and then restarting. Charles hm ... volt meter... i think we have one.. and b/f is very good @ electronics. I asked about the AT/X thing cause this mobo is bizarre. It accepts both factors. And I have a 250 watt P/S case available...and if the original p/s that came with the comp is underpowered I'll just use the ATX 250 watter. - FemmeFatale Using the ATX power supply may not work for you. Even though the board may accept either one (I've got a board like that), the power switch on the case won't! Most likely, the power switch is a mechanical switch that actually has wires from the power supply going to it. ATX power supplies don't have these power wires, instead the momentary contact switch used as the power switch goes to the system board (that's why many ATX power supplies have a physical on/off switch on the power supply itself). Unfortunately, without the momentary switch, you won't be able to turn the computer on/off. This sounds like an older system. Thanks for the response, sorry I didn't respond back sooner but I changed email programs and just now finished updating all the threads. I now sorta have the drives working. The problem was that in my fstab I had scd0 and scd1 but when I tried to mount them I got an error not a block device. I looked in /dev/cdroms/ and I saw the entried cdrom0 and cdrom1 I added them to my fstab and voila the drives mount now. It just makes no sense to me but there you have it. Still my ide plextor gives me a message no media found but when I try to mount the light goes on and I see it trying to scan the drive so I know its working. Thanks so far. Go to Mandrake Control Centre, remove the printer, then re-install it. Take care to use the Advanced (or is it Expert?) button, which lists the models in detail. This should ensure that you get the best driver. It's very difficult to change the driver on an existing printer setup. Much easier and quicker to start again. Yes I agree that all distros have their own quirks and I am now back on board. The drives all worked on my win boot that was what was making me crazy... And even crazier is the fact that the cdburning stuff found my cdr and used it succesfully.. :) The printer is another bag of beans, I went and downloaded the driver from HP. I installed it according to instructions but I just couldn't understand how to enter the command line options they gave to test the configuration. I tried reinstalling from scratch with the new driver but no results. Since my cd problem is solved I have regained a bit of patience for the printer, although it is a bit frustrating to reboot everytime you need to print I am going to the printing user groups archives to see how others got up and running. Adding sources and disabling supermount are two different things. To disable supermount, it was something like 'supermount -i disable', then 'mount -a'. The main thing was adding the other sources. Now you have a choice. If you have a slow cd like I do, then you don't want to add the other cds. If you don't have much hard disk space, then you don't want to copy the cd's onto your disk. And if you don't have a fast Internet connection, then you don't wanna add the FTP source. Once you figure out which you'd like to do, follow the relevant procedure below. BTW, in my case, I've got a slow cd and limited hd space but a fast connection. I chose to add the ftp source. To add FTP sources, go to http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php#third it'll have you chose which mirror, version, and architecture you want, then present you with a command to type in. I found it very easy. Then go into software sources manager and remove the installation cd as one of the sources. To copy the CD to the hd, create a dir on a partition that has enough space for all 3 cds - something like /home/mandrake will work. Insert and mount your first cd and copy the contents to this directory. Somewhere in there will be a dir called RPMS. On the 2nd and 3rd cd are directories called RPM2, RPM3, etc. Copy these dirs over so that all the rpm dirs are in the same place. Now from the software sources manager, remove the installation cd as one of the sources, and then add a new source. I'd call it local or something like that and browse to find where the hdlist is in this new dir. Finally, to just add the 2nd and 3rd cds, go into software sources manager and add removable media with each (in turn) inserted and mounted. I have 2 gig available in my Mandrake root partition, and can easily expand that to 10 gig if necessary. The 48 meg is probably the real restriction. And it's stupid, too. The machine has more than enough capacity for what I really want to do, and am doing on SuSE Linux now. Occasionally it slows doen, but not seriously, and I did want to get started with the new kernel, which is rumoured to be smaller and faster, and do a better and more flexible job of packet filtering. And even emacs did not appear during the install. There must be a way around this.
