R: R: [newbie-it] CONTROLLER RAID E MANDRAKE !
Rocco

Re: [newbie-it] W2KP e Mandrake... piccolo problema con gli HD
Scusa ma perch#232; hai fatta tutta questa operazione? Sono poco esperto! :-) Potevi, molto pi#249; semplicemente, installare entrambi i s.o. senza staccare i dischi. Grazie e ciao! Get advanced SPAM filtering on Webmail or POP Mail ... Solution was fairly simple. After looking at the error messages another time I saw that it went haywire after not finding glib.h, so i figured it must have something to do with glib, which it did.I installed ibglib1.2-devel and libglib2.0_0-devel. Ok if you were to get ADSL ou wouldn't get a modem each. You would get one modem (for as little as £30) for the computer that is most likely to be on for most of the time You buy 1 network card for each computer (as cheep as £10 each) making sure it works in Linux first And a cheap hub. Use the internet conection sharing wizard to tel linux yiu want to share the conection Then everyone in your house can share the ADSL conection. You can get ADSL for less than £20 per month. This is the setup I'm using here I got a Network Startup Kit for £30 which was a hub and 2 network cards. I assure it is worth it and makes life a lot easier (it also works with windows if anyone's actually silly enough to use it) I'm also sure if you search arround on ebay.co.uk you;ll find an even cheeper solution. Mike John Richard Smith wrote: Michael Lothian wrote: Yes that's true but the cost is considerably more, the quality of service improvement not that much higher, and in my case I have to buy 4 new modems just to get started. I get this stuff just about every day - just goes to show y'all how much Microsoft TRULY and REALLY cares for their PURCHASING PUBLIC. Wazzat Billy Gates? You want to make safe software for the public? -Forwarded Message- Subject: Virus Alerts [Prevention: the best weapon against the Blaster wor m - 08/13/03] Date: 13 Aug 2003 15:02:25 +0200 - Prevention: the best weapon against the Blaster worm - Virus Alerts, by Panda Software (http://www.pandasoftware.com) Madrid, August 13, 2003 - The Blaster worm continues to wreak havoc in users PCs, as borne out by the number of incidents recorded by Panda Software's international tech support network, and it is still the virus most frequently detected by Panda ActiveScan, the free online scanner. However, the epidemic currently being caused by Blaster could easily have been avoided. The vulnerability exploited was reported by Microsoft almost a month and half ago and was widely reported by the international media. The same advise was repeated time and again: to avoid problems, simply apply the Microsoft patch. Seemingly this advise fell on deaf ears, judging by the number of computers affected by Blaster. The situation also highlights the general lack of security awareness among home users, who have been affected more than any other user group Users with personal firewalls installed have escaped the effects of the worm, as port 135, used by Blaster to enter computers, is protected by these kinds of programs. Likewise, the high number of incidents still being caused by Blaster is also largely a result of the failure by users to keep the antivirus software in their PCs completely up-to-date. Similarly, the RPC DCOM vulnerability continues to cause problems, as Panda Software's Virus Laboratory has detected the appearance of a new worm/Trojan called W32/RPCSdbot which exploits the Windows vulnerability to take control of the infected computer and spread via e-mail. However, protecting against Blaster, W32/RPCSdbot and other viruses that could emerge in the near future can be simple, provided users take a few basic precautions: - Find out about and apply patches to correct vulnerabilities detected in the software installed on your PC. Vendors websites will normally have this sort of information and the downloads. Similarly, e-bulletin services, such as Panda Software's Oxygen3 24h-365d free newsletter, provide the latest information on these security issues. - Keep your antivirus updated. The simplest way is to install solutions that update automatically when users connect to the Internet such as Panda Antivirus Titanium or Platinum 7.0. - Install a personal firewall in your computer, with both broadband and modem connections, as just a few seconds is all it takes for a malicious code like Blaster to infect your PC. Solutions like Panda Antivirus Platinum 7.0 actually include a personal firewall. Finally, Panda Software advises all users who haven't done so already to update their antivirus solution. The company has already released the updates to detect Blaster and W32/RPCSDbot, so if your software is not configured to do so automatically, you can update your antivirus from http://www.pandasoftware.com Panda Software has also released the PQREMOVE application designed specifically to clean and repair systems affected by Blaster. This utility can be downloaded from http://www.pandasoftware.com/downloads/utililities/ For further information about Blaster, W32/RPCSdbot and other viruses, visit Panda Software's Virus Encyclopedia at: http://www.pandasoftware.com/virus_info/encyclopedia/ -- Thu Aug 14 12:35:00 EST 2003 12:35:00 up 10 days, 16:23, 1 user, load average: 2.74, 2.61, 2.50 - |____ |kuhn media australia| | /-oo /| |'-. |http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | || | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' |stephen kuhn| | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | - linux user #:267497 linux machine #:194239 * MDK 9.1+ RH 9 Mandrake Linux Kernel 2.4.21-11mdk Cooker for i586 - * This message was composed on a 100% Microsoft free computer * Politics and the fate of mankind are formed by men without ideals and without greatness. The other problem with MTA forced disclaimers is that it breaks PGP encryption.. So if you ever need to encrypt or checksum your emails, you will have to lose the disclaimer. We also put the disclaimer at the end of the email. This poses a problem for somebody who receives it by mistake. They have read the email before they read the disclaimer. While we don't send out much information which could harm us in anyway we could be placing ourselves in a tricky position. I would like to suggest the solution of putting the disclaimer on an web page and putting a link to it at the top of the email. This would also save a little bandwidth in the email server. Re: [newbie] sylpheed and rox: dragging attachments into rox
not sure. might be best asked as a cross post to the sylpheed or rox MLs. I'll try the when i get a chance and report back. It works fine with xftree, and fine if i drag from rox to sylpheed... how the fsck did you do that? I just tried it and when I dragged a .png onto a sylpheed compose window it was just a mess of code in the message body. The way to do it is to View -- attachment (Alt A on mine), then drag the file into the attachment section that shows up. I don't thin i did anything special to make that work, but let me know if it doesn't on yours, and i'll see if i changed a view setting. We're on the same version... One sol'n is to have the server collect the mail with fetchmail (config info provided with manpage, ie. man fetchmail), then have the client machines pop the server for their mail, again using fetchmail. All you need to do is to install the imap package on the server so that it will act as a POP server (like the one your ISP has). You can do this through the MCC software manager. I've done this myself, it's as easy as pie. For sending mail, the server should already have postfix running by default, so you just configure the mail clients to point to your server by its IP. It will then act just like your ISP's smtp server. Just make sure you configure postfix on the server to *use* your ISP's smtp as a relay, so that you don't end up having your mail server end up on an RBL, or open-relay blacklist. This is well documented in /etc/postfix/main.cf, the postfix config file. -- HaywireMac The more laws and order are made prominent, the more thieves and robbers there will be. -- Lao Tsu Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] popfile with sylpheed rocks!
This is great. People have promoted this before, but i'll give my own quick review: Popfile is super easy to set up, even for diff users (now that Miark filled me in on seperating the port #'s). Since it's written in perl, its cross platform. I imagine you could use the same popfile directory to boot into either OS, though i haven't tried that. You can set sylpheed to show any header you want, and i set popfile to add the message link to the headers, so i see this in the preview pane: X-POPFile-Link: http://127.0.0.1:8080/jump_to_message?view=popfile35=1.msg X-Text-Classification: ham Which means if it does misclassify a mail, i can click on the link and reclassify it. Also, so far, Dillo has done fine with the popfile browser interface, making the entire thing super speedy. You can also use it as more than a spam filter (though i am not at the moment): You can train it to seperate any email out: work, personal, spam, good pr0n, bad pr0n, etc... It does have some sort of white-list ability, but i haven't experimented with that yet. eric Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Miark Boot to failsafe; then double check the /etc/lilo.conf and also edit the /etc/inittab for default of runlevel 3; re-run lilo; reboot - you SHOULD be at the console login; if not, boot back to failsafe, edit the /etc/lilo.conf and tell vga=1; re-run lilo, reboot again. Once you've got it sorted out in runlevel 3, you can change the inittab to runlevel 5 and then go back to doing your pr0n surfing. No go. I removed acpid, changed vga to normal, removed the Direct Connect rpms, and re-installed the NVidia drivers a few more times. Nothing helps. As far as booting to init 3, it just doesn't work. In fact, from failsafe itself I cannot progress to init 2 or 3--but I can to 5. When I try to boot to init 5 directly, it gets to about the saslauthd [OK] message, and then the screen flickers about three times, so it looks like it's trying to go graphical. Are they officially on the M$ side of things are are they attempting to play Even if that's relevant, AMD makes better processors. See tom's hardware. AMD (ca 2001 when I put this box together, at that time the Pentium 4 had just surfaced) is better and faster at the same clock speed than P4. There are still serious issues like cache and pipeline stalls in the P4, unless Intel fixed that since. If Intel is more MS-friendly than they should be, I don't know. I'll stick with AMD. I, for one, don't want a computer that keeps track of my existence and reports to MS - I know I exist, and don't need any help in that area. Of course, I'm referring to the increasing possibility of DMCA-aware computing, with processors that detect or refuse to run stuff.) I can sum up the SCO effort in 2 words: unjust enrichment. I read another article which made the point that at one time SCO (they acquired Caldera, right?) was actively trying to market a commercial Linux distro. I never opted for Caldera, but I read the reviews and such. Now, they did much of that through GPL, no? Did SCO commit any *non GPL* changes to the Linux kernel? No - they would have been rejected by Linus. (Anyone got his input?) AIX is a totally different animal than Linux. The kernels are different. How dare SCO tell IBM that every customer is now using an illegal product. (we use AIX + Pick at work). But isn't that SCO's argument? That Linux got polluted by source from AIX? Redhat, Mandrake, debian, etc. have not signed contracts with SCO to my knowledge. I know I didn't. I can't be in violation of a non-existant license. SCO will never see any money from me. Might as well tell them that if Linux did not exist, millions of people probably would be pirating SCO, or perhaps Windows. neutral in all of this. Hello, (I'll resend this message, cause I think it have notbeen sent b4) I'm trying to use some services that i'm setting up at my computer at home, but the firewall here, where i work, blocks almost all the outgoing ports, so, i cant connect to my home computer. So, despite the network administer dont want to tell me which outgoing ports are unblocked, i want to discover it, by scan, or by any other way. But the scan services we find on the internet always scan incoming ports. Can anyone give me a light on how use that? BTW, anyone know how where to find a step-by-step guide on configuring ssh? RE: [newbie] ARTICLE: Study: Linux nears Windows XP usability
So can I.. but does that mean you should??? Sure sounds good in theory.. but if you forked say 200 bucks extra to get a faster P4 CPU for example, and then bought a winmodem, you will lose most of the difference that faster CPU would have gotten you as its wasting cycles doing stuff the modem itself should be. The funny thing is, that its so hard to find internal modems that are not winmodems.. cos comparing an external serial with a winmodem is not a fair comparision. The cost of the external has to not only cover the hardware that the winmodem should have it also has to cover the modem case, the power supply for it ect. An internal hardware modem would be very close to the same price as a winmodem.. There are a couple out there, their names just escape me at present. [newbie] OT--General Linux Questions
I know this is a little off topic, but I was hoping to hear as many opinions on these questions as possible. 1. After reading this article ... http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2001436280_linuxgroup08.html I am left wondering; where does Intel stand in the debate? Are they officially on the M$ side of things are are they attempting to play neutral in all of this. I have never used an AMD processor and I wasn't really planning on it, but if Intel is out to hurt Open Source, I will have to change my stance. 2. After reading this article ... http://www.vnunet.com/News/1142837 I am wondering, what about UnitedLinux? Isn't SCO part of an ongoing pro Linux project with SuSE and others? Does SCO expect me to pay $699 for a license for software they shipped me under the pretense that it was 'free'? Honestly, I went to United Linux about 2 months ago and signed up for the shipment of the free software discs. If I install them, and then pay the $699 can I not sue them for fraud? But it might be OK. Since you've worked with a number of drives then I guess it is all right. I went ahead and put it on /dev/hdb and it's a little bit faster: [EMAIL PROTECTED] tmp]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hdb /dev/hdb: Timing buffer-cache reads: 232 MB in 2.00 seconds = 116.00 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 72 MB in 3.06 seconds = 23.53 MB/sec But of course, I'm downloading, transcoding a dvd with dvd:rip, and doing other stuff too. So it's bound to be a little bit low. I'd expect excess of 35-40 on IDE with bus speed 66. Is that not unreasonable? David E. Since it's on YOUR computer, it's bad. but is that bad, like really good, like that sure is a bad hot rod, or bad like nasty, as in when you are good you are good, but when you are bad you are really good, or bad like foul, as in that Avocado has gone bad.
