TIA Even easier: cat /dev/sd on the CML and hit TAB...that way you'll see what's there. When inserting/plugging the device the specific /dev/sd* file gets made and also gets removed when unplugging. Kaj, The following may be interesting to you: I had a USB thumb drive preformatted with FAT32 that was doing weird things under linux. When I deleted files off it, no free space was reclaimed. After filling the disk and erasing it, it still had no space available. So I tried a format under diskdrake: it said unsupported filesystem or something. It had the filesystem as grey, but somehow it was recognised as vfat. I had to delete the filesystem, remove the mountpoint, create a new FAT32 system in the empty space (I still need to be compatible), format it again, and the thing now works like a charm. All in all, I think not all is FAT32 that appears to be so, try giving diskdrake another go. At the same time I had a browse on defrag apps for linux, and the bottom line seemed to be that linux needs defrag as much as it needs antivirus software. Then boot with the floppy. Or, if you don't like having the larger collection of floppies, you download the Ultimate Boot CD from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and boot with that when you need the tools. I've just got my hands on a 160 GB external USB hard disk. Now, this thing comes preformatted with a FAT32 (vfat) file system. When I unmount the thing I can't reformat the drive with a decent file system like ReiserFS, JFS, ext2 or ext3 from be it the MCC or by hand. I can't even re-partition it with FAT32 ? I've never used an external drive, but I would think that you could only do that if the bios recognised the external drive - I understand that some do. The linux fdisk utility won't let me do anything on the drive. Is the drive seen at all? I would have thought that if the drive is recognised it should be possible to remove the partition as long as it's unmounted? Kaj, I know this might sound dumb, but have you tried diskdrake? disk drake seems to me to be a damn well configured partittion manager tool. I never have tried to reformat a USB connected drive with it, but I would ex[ect it to handle it well. Yes, Ed. Diskdrake gives the option to format the drive (/dev/sda1) but nothing happens. The linux fdisk utility won't let me do anything on the drive. Is the drive seen at all? I would have thought that if the drive is recognised it should be possible to remove the partition as long as it's unmounted? Anne The drive is seen OK, but trying to format it with a real file system is a no go. I'm wondering if someone wrote a defragger for linux to use on a FAT32 partition ? - It's my impression that many here have such a partition for their Windows stuff. I'll google around some. No major problem though, just my perfectionism Kaj Haulrich. Kaj; I think Anne has the right idea. I have several clients using external USB drives instead of other types of backup drives/media. Many of them came partitioned and pre-formatted as FAT32, but Diskdrake made fast work of it. One thing you should consider though, is that it helps sometimes to delete the mount-point folder right after you unmount the drive and before you attempt to delete the FAT32 partition. Your problem may have something to do with that. If not, then this will make sure that drive access and permissions are updated at the least. If necessary, go to the harddrive manufacturer's website and download their diagnostics tools. Some like Maxtor have a bootable ISO image you can download and use to reformat the drive back to factory standards. Others have the same type of tools which can be run from a bootable floppy diskette. Worst-case, you can remove the hard drive from it's USB case and temporarily connect it as a slave drive on your Linux box. Once Diskdrake sees the drive you can proceed normally and delete and create new partitions and re-format the drive the way you prefer. Your problem might also be that the circuitry in the USB box itself may have either a hardware or software 'Lock' system. Check your owners manual for the USB box to see if it does. Once more possibility is that the controller chip in the USB case does not support Linux, but I find that highly unlikely. IN all cases, you'll have to unmount the drive from diskdrake to begin the process, so keep that in mind. Thanks a lot, Mr. Geek - what a lot of options :-) Funny thing is, Diskdrake doesn't color the /dev/sda1 meaning it can't see the FS type. And, yes, this is a Maxtor device, works fine apart from this issue. Now, I'll play with your suggestions. So far I've come to the conclusion that one or two of those daemons (or is it devils ?) are written by Microsoft : my /etc/fstab keeps changing each time a USB device gets inserted, especially the umask=0022 statement. This of course prevents me as a ordinary user to write to the device. I have to unmount it as root, edit my fstab to umask=0 and remount. Drives me crazy. Mr. Geek, if you mount your camera as /mnt camera, become root in a terminal, cd to /mnt and issue the command chmod 777 camera (where camera can be anything you choose, i.e. removable or whatever). That will allow you to write, delete etc. directly on the camera. Beware though, sometimes you won't be allowed to chmod even as root. In order to bypass that, you'll have to edit your /etc/fstab so that umask=0 (instead of the default 0022) for the device line. Save that file, umount the device and mount again. Now you'll have all permission set drwxrwxrwx which means that root, yourself and all others can do as they please. If it's FAT32, no problems whatsoever. But Windows cannot write to Linux (I think it can't even see other filesystems than NT and FAT - but I'm not sure, have never used Windows). Another solution : If you have the dough, by an external USB hard disk with at least one FAT32 partition. Should be accessible from either OS. Glad you got the other things sorted out. If, by any chance, you are dual-booting Linux and another OS, an easy way to transfer files is to create an extra FAT32 partition in the middle to share files. Most OS's can read and write to FAT32. It isn't smart enough to figure out what partitions are extended, and what partitons are data partitions, so if it sees more then one, it plays it safe and bails out. (drakupdate_fstab is called by hotplug when it gets a USB storage device, to handle mounting it.) I am working on a way to handle this using udev, and I have it working using udev, and supermount entries in fstab, but there are still a couple of problems with it. My supermount entries automaticly show up on the KDE desktop, and they always show that they are mounted. They are there even if the drive isn't plugged in. CLI=Command Line Interface. From here you can do everything (well, almost). For example get to the GUI (Graphical User Interface), like KDE, Gnome or whatever. Just type :startx (without the quotes). If you prefer to boot directly into the GUI, just (as root) edit the file /etc/inittab and change id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault: That's all. When trying to open shockwave flash apps, I can get the movie but no sound. The error says : There was an error loading the module Netscape plugin viewer. The diagnostics is: Library files for libnsplugin.la not found in paths ??? - I don't have Netscape installed, only Mozilla, Firefox, Konqueror and Opera. Same problem. How did you install Mozilla in the first place ? - If you just (as root) typed urpmi mozilla, you'll have 1.6. To uninstall it, just (as root) type urpme mozilla. If, on the other hand, you installed it with the install script from Mozilla.org, it probably ended up in a directory of its own, namely /usr/mozilla or /usr/local/mozilla. To remove it, just delete the whole mozilla directory. I've looked in the MCC/security (I'm on Mandrake 10.0, running the KDE desktop environment) and find the permissions on the locked /root are 700 and I can't change them; my security level is (was) set at 2 with all defaults. A msec set at level 2 would certainly keep me sleepness all night. Charles has Mozilla 1.7.5 but only for 10.1. I don't know if it will work on 10.0, but I would try. If it doesn't, you can always download it from here : http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/ This version isn't a .rpm, but comes with its own installer. I would install it in /usr/local or /usr/lib. That way it's easy to add it to your menu system with the Kmenu editor. If you don't like it, just delete the mozilla directory. First partitions are on the outer rings. Now it is just the opposite with CD drives, which are recorded from the inner ring to the outer edge. Anyhow, back to HDD's, I believe the track location (inner/outer) has a much bigger effect than distance the r/w arm has to travel. r/w arms move so quickly back'n forth they'd put a humming bird's wings to shame. Now, every platter is divided into sectors or slices, each containing the same, fixed amount of bytes. Or, to put in another way, the bytes on the outer rings are more dispersed than on the inner ? My brain hurts. That doesn't matter, it is a question of personal liking. But Mandrake uses *rpm*. Now, in order to be as user-friendly as Debian, the Mandrake developers invented *urpmi*. I honestly don't know what *u* stands for, but a qualified guess would be *Uniform Redhat Package Manager Installer* - or some such. Anyway, it is really, really smart. The only pre-requisite to using *urpmi* is that you have defined some *sources*. Which means that you'll have to find some servers to supply you. That's easy as well : Go to : http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ And follow instructions EXACTLY. You can choose a multitude of servers for each category (main, contrib, updates,plf), but not all servers get updated regularly, so please experiment. As a rule of thumb : select servers on the other side of the globe, because they tend to be idle when you are awake ;-) This accomplished, installing software is as easy as it gets : 1. The GUI method : Just click the *System--Configuration--Packaging--Install Software* or (and that's the way we prefer here, because you can see what's going on) : 2. Open a terminal (Konsole), type *su*, give root-password and type : *urpmi application*. You'll love it. It never happened under 9.1, and I don't think it happens under 10.0 (can't remember for certain) but it certainly does under 10.1. I know it is said to be hot-plug related, but it doesn't seem to get any better. Could be udev related? Anyway, that's the only problem I get. The CD-RW and DVD-RW drives are no problem, it's just the LS120, camera and card-reader that gets the problem. I mounted the LS120 as /dev/sde, used it to transfer a file to box1 (no problem) plugged it back into box2 and it became /dev/sdf sigh Anne Thanks, Anne. It seems you have supermount enabled, just like me. So I guess it's another ghost that messes up my fstab at random. Round up the other, usual suspects : devfs, udev, usbfs, hotplug etc...? One should place devfs=no or off (something of the sort) if it is showing as one of the services. Somebody jump in here if you know about this device conflict. You're quite right, Dennis. I'm aware of this, but have tried all thinkable permutations of those : for example having devfs but not udev, or hotplug but not supermount. At the moment I don't even mention devfs in /etc/lilo.conf so I guess it isn't running - at least it doesn't show up in services. At least I now can win the fight every time I mount something, but it is cumbersome. I'm longing back to the good, old days when mounting was manual.
