Re: [newbie] How to update cvs 1.11 to cvs 1.9?

2005-01-21 Thread Sam Chan
Hi again

I forgot to mention this website:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=audigyls
Maybe this one offers the most straightforward explaination to my
problem. It clearly states that the live! 24bit is not yet supported
but there's a solution involving .diff files I have no idea how
.diff file works, so any help?

Thank you again

Re: [newbie] How to update cvs 1.11 to cvs 1.9?

2005-01-21 Thread Sam Chan
Hi Greg

The problem is that the soundblaster live! 24-bit is not recognized as
a sound card. My problem is well known to live! 24bit owners all over
the web ;) And I have recently found a board with the posted solution
at: http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=135920

Instead of having you go through the whole thread, here's a summary:
The live! 24-bit is different from previous live! models, it is based
on the AudigyLs chip. Normally any SB live! can use the emu10k1, but
I'm 100% percent sure the 24-bit doesn't use it. As stated on the
justlinux board the 24-bit uses CA0106. CA0106 is only available
through the Alsa cvs, because it is still experimental (only 2.1
speaker support...) So that's why I need the cvs

Here's the posted solution from alsa website:
cd
cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/alsa login

Type empty password here... (Press 'Enter' only)

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/alsa co -z3 .

Once the cvs tree is checked out, you may update your tree with the
latest changes by going to the directory you checked it out in and
typing:

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/alsa co -P -d

But I'm blocked at this step: cvs -z3
-d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/alsa co -z3
The error returned to me says something like this basically: -z not a
valid option.

So yeah, I hope I made myself clearer than my initial post... sorry about
 that.

Thank you for your help
Sam

[newbie] How to update cvs 1.11 to cvs 1.9?

2005-01-20 Thread Sam Chan
Hi

I need cvs 1.9 in order to install some very specific drivers for my
soundblaster live! 24bits. But I stuck with the cvs 1.11 version. I
tried to find the rpm package for cvs 1.9 with urpmi, but I'm
overwhelmed by all the rpms packages. Can somebody point me toward
the easiest way?

Thank you

RE: [newbie] group permissions

2002-02-14 Thread Sam STern

Hi Mithrilhall,

What you need to do is audit your system permissions. Make certain that
the "all" permissions are very restrictive. Here is an example:

/home

drwxr-x--x 15 root adm 4096 Feb 14 01:53 ./
drwxr-x--x 21 root adm 1024 Feb 9 01:18 ../
drwx--5 adminadmin4096 Feb 1 05:23 admin/
drwx--4 usr1 usr1 4096 Feb 1 05:30 usr1/
drwx--4 usr1$usr1$4096 Feb 9 00:26 usr1$/
drwx--4 usr2 usr2 4096 Feb 1 05:30 usr2/
drwx--4 usr2$usr2$4096 Feb 9 00:26 usr2$/

Here we can see that usr1 can only browse their home share while usr2
cannot see usr1's share. A good start is to move your system to msec
level 4 or 5 after reviewing the documents in:

/usr/share/doc/msec-xx

Do Not forget that msec lvl 4+ introduces the ctools, ntools and xgrp
group to restrict access to key files including ping and top/ps. Once
the permissions are sanely set, then you need not worry about the
anonymous user (assuming that the anonymous user cannot obtain r00t via
your FTP, IMAP, etc. server). I would strengthen permissions on the home
directories so that each user's home is "chmod 700" or only readable,
writable or executable by that user. Please remember that some files in
/etc MUST be world-readable but individual home dirs, mailspools, etc.
should not be group- or world- readable.

You may also want to investigate creating a chroot jail for various
services, but remember that a good cracker can break out of a chroot
jail if the right tools are available.

P.S. to alter the home permissions you may want to:

Chmod 700 /home/*

Or similar.

Re: [newbie] Xawtv, how to change the sound volume

Fire up the "Sound mixer" from Multimedia --> Sound. You'd want to adjust the
main volume control (left-most one) and/or the one for "line". I make a link
to the sound mixer in home/yourusername/.kde/Autostart so that it'll
automatically be launched on startup (like in Windows).

On the subject of tv apps, I was wondering why Mandrake dropped kwintv from
its list of applications (it was included in 7.2, but not 8.0)? The current
version of kwintv is a KDE2 app, and I find the Hauppauge WinTV-like

Re: [newbie] Limewire, Phex

2001-06-09 Thread Sam

Yes I'm running LimeWire on LM8. What you need is to have a Java runtime
installed (e.g. Sun's or IBM's) and the "Other" install version of LimeWire.
Then copy-and-paste the following line into a terminal window and execute.

java -classpath LimeWireOther.zip install

To launch LimeWire after installation, you might want to create a link
to the executable script for convenience e.g. in my case a link
pointing to:

/home/myusername/LimeWire/LimeWire

Have fun!

[newbie] changing soundcards in Mandrake 8?

2001-06-06 Thread Sam

I've just swapped my SB Live! out of my machine and enabled the onboard VIA
AC'97 audio instead. I checked harddrake and the module via82cxxx_audio seems
to be loaded. The module for the Live! card seems to be no longer loaded.

However, I seem to have lost all sound running any multimedia application
(including Realplayer, XMMS etc) at all in my machine. I ran the "Soundmixer"
(kmix) and it only claims " Invalid mixer Creative SBLive".

Is there any way to get Mandrake to use the VIA sound instead, short of
re-installing Mandrake? Thanks in advance for any help.

2001-05-29 Thread Sam

Hello, I've just tried the throughput test at the page and I didn't
encounter any problems running it using Netscape 4.77 under Mandrake 8.
You don't need to install the netscape plugins package to get Java
working in Netscape and neither is installation of a Java Runtime
necessary - however, you might want to check under Preferences -->
Advanced that Java is enabled in Netscape.

With a JRE installed, the tests also work under Konqueror and Mozilla
for me.

Re: [newbie] LimeWire Again

2001-05-29 Thread Sam

Hi Marcia,
what you need to do is key in the following in a terminal window to
start the installation:

java -classpath LimeWireOther.zip install

To launch LimeWire after installation, you might want to create a link
to the executable script for convenience e.g. in my case a link
pointing to:

/home/myusername/LimeWire/LimeWire

I am using the IBM Java Runtime Edition (JRE), though as I understand
any JRE, including Kaffe, should work with the "other version" install
for LimeWire.

I could no longer run the "linux version" of the LimeWire installer
either after stepping up from LM7.2 to 8.0. This problem is documented
on the LimeWire site, and is not limited to LM 8.0 e.g. it also occurs
on recent versions of Redhat.

[newbie] Mandrake 8 Firewall killed samba access!

2001-05-23 Thread Sam

I've been sharing files using samba on my Mandrake 8 machine with other
Windows PCs in my home network for a while now, and all computers can
see one another in the network neighborhood.

A few moments ago though, I ran the "Firewall" wizard in the Mandrake
Control Panel. Now, I find that I can no longer "see" the other
computers on the network, and vice versa. I can still ping the other
computers though. I have verified that Samba services are definitely
running.

What could be the issue here - and how do I rectify it? Or do I need to
disable the firewall features - and how? Thanks in advance.

[newbie] what is RTC?..VMWare 2.0.4 in LM8

2001-05-21 Thread Sam

I've just installed VMWare 2.0.4 RC2 on LM8, with Windows98SE as the
"guest" OS. While Windows seems to work OK, I get the following dialog
box every time I start vmware:

"The high resolution timer is not currently available
(/dev/rtc: No such device). It is possible that another virtual
machine is using it. Without the timer, Windows 98 will not keep time
correctly and animated menus will appear sluggish. However, other
guest OSes will not be affected."

I'm very sure that I have no other vmware guest OS installed/running. I
checked and /dev/rtc definitely exists, and I've even set permissions
to include my user id.

So, what exactly is RTC? And what can I do about this? Thanks.

[newbie] (the sometimes) infuriating Mandrake menus...wish

2001-05-20 Thread Sam

Thankfully, I haven't had the problem of manually-added menu items Not
appearing, be it for user or system, since LM8.

However, what I'd like to ask is why is it even necessary to have to do
this in the first place? I mean, menus are added automatically after
installing applications in Windows, so why doesn't this happen with
(non-Mandrake packaged) RPM packages in Linux? If the program icons
simply can't be created in the menu system automatically under the
appropriate menu categories, then maybe they could all be "dumped"
under an "Unfiled" category for later sorting?

I know I might sound picky here. But I recall being so confused when I
first started out with LM7.2, trying to figure out where the icons of
new apps are supposed to be. This just might scare off Windows users
trying out Mandrake. Just a thought. :)

Re: [newbie] Network printing problem

2001-05-18 Thread Sam

KUPS is simply amazing - it can scan for a networked printer, and
installation proceeds in an entirely point-and-click fashion, without
any typing whatsoever (except for printer name..). I hope Mandrake will
one day incorporate this ease of use into its Printer configuration
applet. :)

Re: [newbie] Step by step DivX guide?

2001-05-18 Thread Sam

Hi, I use avifile from
http://divx.euro.ru/
First of all, as root (or su), extract the binaries-xxx.zip to
/usr/lib/win32. Next extract the avifile-xxx.tar.gz file to /home/user.
Now
cd avifile
./configure
make
su
make install

Note that before doing all these, you probably have to first select and
install the developer packages for SDL and Qt via Mandrake Software
Manager. Check the compile messages for any other unsatisfied
dependencies if anything fails at any point, and install accordingly.

You can now create a shortcut on the menu or your desktop pointing to:
/usr/local/bin/aviplay

Now you can watch DivX, WMP (though limited to non-streaming) and ASF
files too. :)

Re: [newbie] printing with Cups in LM8

2001-05-18 Thread Sam

Hi Marcia,
I had the same problem with my Epson Stylus Color 600 printer producing
severely "banded" text output when I upgraded to LM8 from LM7.2.
Moreover, there were also very long and painful pauses during the
printing process - which were absent in LM7.2. I also use the CUPS+GIMP
driver.

Recently though, the problems disappeared and printing works perfectly
once again. I'm not sure why exactly, but it's probably due to one of
these 2 following things that I'd done since:
1) updated to the recently released 1.1.7 CUPS packages
2) moved the printer from SMB printing via a shared Windows box, to LPR
printing via my new SMC Barricade router/print server.

Hope this helps.

Re: [newbie] Mozilla and java

2001-05-12 Thread Sam

Yes, but before launching Mozilla remember to be su or logged in as
root first. Go to any webpage that requires use of Java, and download
by clicking on the appropriate button that pops up. After installation,
go to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and check whether there is a symbolic
link named libjavaplugin_oji.so. If it isn't there, create a symbolic
link here pointing to
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/java2/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so
While you're at it, you might also want to copy over (or create links
from) the Realplayer and Flash plugin files from Netscape at
/usr/lib/netscape/plugins. (Assuming they're installed), the files are
libflashplayer.so ShockwaveFlash.class raclass.zip and rpnp.so

Now, as user, launch Mozilla and verify that the plugins have been
installed by clicking on Help-->About Plug-ins.
Hope this helps. :) If I've missed something out feel free to add on.

[newbie] OT: viewing Real content

2001-05-11 Thread Sam

Sorry, I know this is not strictly Mandrake-specific, but heck I AM a
newbie so it might be somewhat relevant after all :).

Has anybody else encountered problems using the RealPlayer 8 with their
browsers. The responses I get on different sites are particularly
erratic with different browsers e.g.

at www.cbs.com/survivor to see the mini videos
Netscape 4.77 claims that "You need Real Player 8 to view the videos on
this site"
Mozilla 0.9 works well enough.
Konqueror 2.1.1 doesn't show anything

at www.news.com to see the view the news videos
- all 3 browsers don't work

Does anybody know what might be the matter here? The Realplayer plugins
are Definitely installed for all 3 browsers ( already checked the
"About plugins" and the Konq "Netscape plugins"). Right now I still
need to re-boot to Windows for this. Argh.

Hi, for gnutella I use LimeWire www.limewire.com The "linux" binary
won't install in LM8, so download the version for "other operating
systems" instead. You'll first need to have Java installed in your

As for napster, I used to use KNapster and Gnapster in LM7.2 - no
reason why they shouldn't work in LM8. You could probably find the RPM

[newbie] Full screen video problem (was Games (full screen) under 8.0?)

2001-05-09 Thread Sam

Thanks to all who replied! Following the outlined steps, I can now switch to
full-screen for games :) However I am still encountering some "abnormalities":

1) using AVIplay to play AVIs or ASFs, I can now switch to full-screen
modewithout X dying on me. However, the results of the full-screen mode
aren't entirely consistent. For instance, if the video window was first
maximised to fill the entire screen, the full-screen mode looks nice enough.
But if the video window were at any other size, full-screen mode would result
in a small video screen with large black border all around.

2) The same thing happens with MTV for MPEG playback. The only difference is
that there's no way to maximise the video window to fill the entire screen in
the first place, so I can't get the "proper" full-screen effect at all.

3) XMovie and XMMS-SMPEG all still segfault immediately upon any attempt to
playback MPEG videos.

I wonder whether these are problems only encountered by users of 3Dfx Banshee
cards, or ALL 3Dfx cards i.e. including the Voodoo3 variants? Many thanks in
advance.

Seems like the problem's not isolated to 3dfx Voodoo3, but to the 3dfx
Banshee too which I am using in my Mandrake 8 machine. On top of the problems
I've encountered trying to get games or MTV to run in full screen, XMMS (with

I don't mean window manager, but desktop. In Mandrake8, KDE2.1.1 is by

I know how to move running applications between different desktops or even

Re: [newbie] Konqueror network browser!

Hi,
prior to KDE 2.1, clicking on the "Network" icon in Konqueror would bring up
the list of Samba shares in my home network. However I haven't been able to
get it working since LISa showed up in the KDE Control Center. I am sure that
I have entered the correct IP address range, subnet and even host names of
the pcs in the home network, but I only get "Could not connect to host

Now I use LinNeighborhood to browse and mount network shares, but I'd like to

[newbie] how to view URLs from Licq using Konqueror?

2001-04-28 Thread Sam

I've finally gotten the hang of using Licq as a substitute for ICQ and
I'm rather impressed with it (especially once I'd compiled KDE support
in - I wonder why Mandrake doesn't include it by default?).

But when viewing received URLs, Licq passes the URL over to Netscape
via the viewurl-netscape.sh script. It seems like if I try to view
another received URL, Netscape must first be closed for the URL to
be opened - otherwise nothing happens.

My question is - how does one get Licq to pass along URLs to Konqueror
instead? Thanks in advance,

2001-04-21 Thread Sam

Hello all,
I have just installed Mandrake 8 and have set up an SMB printer (the printer
is on a networked Windows 98 machine). The printer is an Epson Stylus Color
600. It is detected fine and I can send print jobs. However, I am facing 2
issues with it right now that I hope somebody can help me:

1) the printing comes out very jerkily. This is to say that the printer would
print 1-2 lines and then halt for a few seconds before printing another 1-2
lines and so on. I am using the "CUPS+GIMP-print v4.1.5" driver with dither
set to "very fast" and resolution at 180 DPI.

This did not happen with Mandrake 7.2, nor with printing from windows (my PC
dual boots at times).

2) The print output is simply sub-par even if I switch to 720dpi and toggle
between the different rendering options. It has been like this in Mandrake
7.2 but it irks me now as I'd hoped to print something other than "drafts"
from linux. Moreover, I'd also been convincing friends to give Mandrake 8 a
go. A problem like this would turn them away from linux most definitely. :(

I hope somebody can advise me here. Thanks in advance! :)

[newbie] SPAM

2001-02-26 Thread Cyber Sam

You my knowledge, having an
autoreply assigned to my email is not spamming, if in the opinion of the
moderators of this list it is considered spam, I should let you know that I run
a legal business on the web that requires that my customers get a timely reply
to all of there queries.

I have had my legal department look at what
constitutes 'SPAM' and in there opinion, since the autoreply does not imply or
solicited you to do anything, only supplies information, it can not be legally
considered 'SPAM'.

If you do not like the fact that my company has an
autoreply assigned to it's email, you have the choice of filtering it out, or
ignoring it. Reporting it to the anti-spam groups will not cause me to change
how I or how thousands of other businesses do business in the
net.

Open up a terminal window
enter 'su root'
enter your password to root

This will open a dialog box and ask a few questions, I don't remember the
exact syntax of them, but one said there was already an entry created and if
I really wanted to do this. I said 'yes' and it configured the correct card,
asked if I wanted to test it, I did, it played a .wav and .midi asking if
they worked, I said yes, it saved the configuration and all has been fine

suggested in some of the newsgroug archives, but that seems to have no
effect at all. I am running linux mandrake v7.1 and any help that I get is

Re: [newbie] Telnet & Ftp daemons

2000-07-13 Thread Sam Hunter

Make sure that telnetd and ftpd are installed. You can do this by
putting the Mandrake cd in the drive, mounting it (mount /mnt/cdrom), going
into the RPMS dir (cd /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS), then trying to install the
rpm. I can't remember what it's called right off hand, but try typing
rpm -i telne and tab autocompletion will probably find it for you.
The other thing to do is check your /etc/inetd.conf file. There should
be two lines in them that start ftp and telnet, they will look something
like
#
telnetd -a lot of stuff
ftpd -a lot of stuff
#
if there is a # in front of them (#telnetd) then they are commented out so
they won't run. Remove the #, save the file, and type killall -HUP inetd
this should restart inetd and reload telnet and ftp servers if they are
installed.

[newbie] Checking 386/387 coupling --failed

2000-07-01 Thread Sam Hunter

I just built a new machine, using a
celeron 566 processor.  As you probably know this uses the coppermine core,
and new p3 instruction set (it is basically a p3 with less cache).  When I
try to boot Mandrake on this computer I get a
Checking 386/387 coupling (3) failed trying to
reset
387 failed: trying to reset
over and over and over
If I remove the 566, and put in a celeron 300a the system
boots fine, Mandrake installs without a hitch and all is good.
I've tried upgrading my kernel to 2.2.16, and then
plugging in the celeron 566 with similar results.  I've seen screen
captures on numerous sites (while searching for an answer to this question)
where people have booted with a p3.  How do they do this???  Is there
some special kernel switch or something I have to implement?

thanks for the help

Beyond basic SCSI config, there's also a utility in the BIOS to low-level

The copy I have says:
If you have downloaded the Acrobat Reader files from the Adobe Web site,
you must first uncompress and untar the files before beginning the
installation. Instructions for downloading and uncompressing the files
are available on the Adobe Web site.

The installation script prompts you to answer questions regarding the
installation, such as where you want to place the Reader files.
Reasonable default values are provided. Press Return to select the
recommended defaults, or enter your own values.

To run the installation script:

1. Change to the directory containing the installation script. If you
are
installing Acrobat Reader from a CD-ROM, change to the appropriate
   directory on the CD-ROM.

2. Start the installation script. The filename of the script may be
uppercase or lowercase depending on your system for example:

 # ./INSTALL

3. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

If you make a mistake, you can do either of the following:

* Exit at different points in the procedure.

* Press the interrupt key sequence (Control+C on most UNIX systems) to
   cancel the installation.

When the installation is complete, a message appears indicating that you
have installed the software successfully. Acrobat Reader is now
installed.

Hi Lane,
Great question .. lead me to look at the
"man man"

where I found the line:
"the default path list is found by consulting /etc/man.config."

Looking there I found:
"MANPATH/usr/man
 MANPATH/usr/local/man
 MANPATH/usr/X11R6/man
 MANPATH /usr/lib/perl5/man"

Now doing a:
"locate man | less"
overwhelms you with a page by page listing of 5200+ listings. I don't
know how to get it to show "only" man rather than manual as well. But
you can wander thru the listings and see if you find something that you
think needs to be included in the man path statement.

OR you might look here:
http://www.google.com/linux?q=%22man+pages%22&num=30&site=search

Pick something you feel is left out and using the instructions in the
man man page and add your own listings. There are HTML, tarball, as well
as RPM's available for your viewing pleasure. Pretty kwel eh?

2000-02-26 Thread Sam Junge

the linux partition is deleted, but when i put the windows 98 boot disk in,
what should i do? i typed fdisk/mbr, and i guess it runs. It takes me back
to the c drive, how do i run windows from there, because i have to ctr alt
del to get the system shutdown, and when it boots up into windows, it
continually recognizes the PartitionMagic dos program to delete partition

To get a W98 boot disk, go to
your friend's comp that has W98 and do the following.

    "Start" > "Settings"

Sorry for making this so long, but I wanted to make sure I
includedall the details, so please take the time to read it : I
bought Mandrake Linux 7.0, which came with a version of PartitionMagic
as part of the "extra's" cd. I installed Partition and BootMagic on my NEW
Windows 98 computer, then installed Linux. I felt Idid not do the best
job of installing Linux, so I decided to delete thepartition I created.
There was an option in the PartitionMagic folderto start a dos program
that would delete my Linux partition. I did so,and when the computer
re-booted the program came up, and I followed thedirections to delete
the partition.  I assumed it had worked, but whenthe computer came
up again, the partition was deleted but it would gointo that same
PartitionMagic dos program and give me a window to clickok that said
"The Linux Parititon could not be deleted. That operatingsystem
partition was not found." When I click ok it reboots and doesthe same
thing. WHAT SHOULD I DO I tried getting fdisk, autoexec.bat and a few
other things from a different win98 computer andputting them on a disk.
I also did a sys a: from another computer onto that disk and put them onto
my new computer. This at leasts puts me at a dos prompt. I tried typing
fdisk/mbr at the c and the a prompts, but the computer either doesn't
recognize them or it doesn't change anything. There is no windows directory
at c, so I can't really run anything. People have told me to get a win98
boot disk, but I don't have one / know how to make one. What should I do ???
I can't runwindows, so I am really frustrated. If you've had this
problem before, please give me a detailed solution. THANKS,

[newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error

2000-02-25 Thread Sam Junge

As I've mentioned before, I've been having problems with
PartitionMagic. I installed PartitionMagic, then mandrake linux 7, then decided
to delete the linux partition. No longer does my computer load lilo, or list
linux as a partition, but PartitionMagic still loads as a dos program when the
computer starts up and tells me "That linux partition could not be deleted. The
operating system partition being deleted was not found." The only option it
gives me is to click ok, which shuts down the computer and repeats the process.

I tried going to my other computer and
doing a sys a:, and also putting fdisk from my other computer onto the disk. I
then put this disk in the computer that wouldn't load windows, and it gave
me an a prompt. I tried typing fdisk /mbr, but it didn't make a difference for
the next time i booted the computer. What can I do?
Please give me a detailed enough anwser
because I've tried to solve this problem numerous
ways.

[newbie] FDISK doesn't work for partition magic

2000-02-25 Thread Sam Junge

As indicated in my previous messages, i have a problem with
partition magic. I used a boot disk, but dos doesn't recognize fdisk at
either the c or the a prompts

[newbie] Severe PartitionMagic Error, please read

2000-02-24 Thread Sam Junge

Here is my problem, please take the time to read it
:

I recently installed partition and boot
magic on my windows 98 computer in preparation to install mandrake Linux 7.0. I
installed Linux, but felt I did not do a good enough job so i
decided to delete the partition. When I got to Windows, I used the
delete Linux partition option that PartitionMagic gave me. When the
computer rebooted, I went through the steps of the dos delete linux
partition program, and it seemed as though it had worked. When the computer
re-booted, Lilo gave me the same three options as usual : windows, linux, and
floppy. Whether or not linux should still be listed as an option or whether I
should have entered lilo at all is a different question, because when
i typed linux just in case, it doesn't work anyways. ( the floppy
option is also not the problem ) My real problem is that when i type in
"windows" the computer goes to the partitionMagic dos program that says "the
Linux partition could not be deleted. That operating system partition to be
deleted was not found." This program gives me only the option to click ok,
and when i do so, the computer reboots and when i type windows again under lilo,
the same problem occurs. I have heard several responses, none of which I have
gotten to work.
I made a boot disk on my other windows
computer ( typing sys a: at dos prompt at other computer ). I then put the disk
into the computer and it booted up into a dos prompt. People told me to type
fdisk /mbr, which i did at both the a and the c prompt, but neither recognized
it. I also typed win / win98 / windows, but that didn't work either.

I can't get back into my computer ( windows
), so please try to solve my problem.
    THANKS A MILLION,
me

[newbie] PartitionMagic erro

2000-02-24 Thread Sam Junge

I installed a Linux partition, then tried to delete it using
PartitionMagic's delete partition option in windows 98. When the computer booted
up, the delete partition dos program came up, and i went through all the
steps. The computer re-booted, and went to lilo again w/ linux stil as an
option. This isn't the problem, though, because when i try to run windows it
goes into the delete partition dos program and tells me "could not delete linux
partition. The operating system partition being deleted was not found." And
every time i reboot and try to run windows, it gives me this window with
clicking ok as the only option. ( when i click ok, the system reboots ). ANY
IDEAS? Im desperate, i can't get into windows 98 and i linux doesn't work
anyways/

Hello Brent,
Look at your /etc/fstab
For my setup, I added the line:
/dev/hda4 /nt40 ntfs defaults 0 0

then I added the directory "nt40" to my "/" partition

There is proably a cmd to make all this work. However I had to do a
reboot and it was up.

I must admit to a few dumbfounded hours spent staring at the "man
fstab" to try to figure it out. Hopefully you're a quicker study.

[newbie] MD 7.0 Screensaver for user on KDE?

Hello Folks,
I ask this question a few days ago. I crashed and reformated since so
may have missed the reply. And yes I tried the search the archives first
.. but the search engine is not working as of this time.
I can not get the kde screen saver to work for a user.I haven't tried
Gnome as I don't want to run it. I changed the permissions to 777 but it
still doesn't work. I would like to know the file that has that info in
it as well as a short copy of someones that is working. All I want is to
blank the screen. Nothing fancy.
I installed everything off the cd 1160 megs, I saw a comment that they
ran out of room on the cd. Do I need to go get a screen saver rpm?

TIA,

Hello Chris,
I believe you may find that telnetd is not installed on your machine.

locate telnetd

If it is missing, as I suspect. Look on your CD or on one of the ftp
sites for your distro.
If you plan to use this in an environment that might be open for
hackers. I understand a program called SSH is a much more secure way of
telneting. No I don't know how to run or install SSH. I'm trying to

[newbie] Mandrake 7.0 and modules

2000-02-01 Thread Sam Feagins

Hey all!
I've got Mandrake 7.0 installed and my bttv module is loaded upon
bootup, but the problem is that it requires an extra parameter
"vidmem=0x420". Is there a way to make it take this option on bootup?
I thought I might put it in /etc/conf.modules, but I'm not sure..

Also I need to get it to load another module automatically
everytime, the tuner module. Do I just put it in /etc/conf.modules
similiar to the line that is in there for the bttv module??

Thanks,
    Sam

RE: [newbie] Netscape Newsgroups

2000-01-07 Thread Sam Walker

Check the date stamps and see how long you're telling Netscape to retain
documents. So far I've received the following date stamps on e-mails, and it
may effect newsgroups too:
1900, 0100, 19100, 1936, 2036, and 2099

If you have an e-mail program/ newsreader set to auotarchive or remove
documents past a certain date, messages with four of the above date stamps
will go away.

Can you say Y2K?

Subject: [newbie] Netscape Newsgroups

Hi everybody,
I'm experiencing a strange problem with Netscape 4.61. After I subscribe
to some selected newsgroups, retrieve messages and read some. Everything
seems to work OK. But, after I shut down the machine and bring it back
up, all of my newsgroups are GONE! Does anyone have any idea what's
going on here?

Re: [newbie] any ideas how to read attached .doc files?please

2000-01-05 Thread Sam Walker

Duncan,

StarOffice is supposed to import Word documents. I'm the renegade in
my office because I prefer it over MS Office. About the only import
problems I've had is where SO places imported grahics in a Word
document.

Also there are two Linux utilities for dealing with these formats. One
converts the .doc files to html, and one is a viewer. I've never used
these so I don't know how well they work.

I can't remember the names of the executables, but John Aldrich might.
They are included with the downloadable version and commercial
versions of mandrake.

You can also go to linuxberg.com and do a search on the names (once
someone sends them).

Last, explain to those sending these documents how to save it as an
rtf and explain why. If more people were informed about this, there
wouldn't be such a headache exchanging formatted text files.

Although MS helped establish the rtf format, now that they're on top
they prefer to keep people ignorant about it.

[newbie] How do I enable support for VGA=EXTENDED in Mandrake 6.0 LILO.CON F?

2000-01-03 Thread Picture, Sam

I have both Redhat 6.0 and Mandrake 6.0. I prefer Mandrake's packaging with
one exception, it does not support VGA=EXTENDED in LILO.CONF. What do I
have to do to enable this support (25x80 lines is a terrible waste of a 20"
monitor). I am a relatively new Linux user, so detailed instructions will
be appreciated.
