Sometimes when Mozilla crashes it leaves some processes running. When you try
to restart Mozilla it will find the default identity still in use.I use
KProcess manager to find and kill the mozilla processes that are still
running. This makes it possible for me to run Mozilla again as default user.

I connect to IRC servers everyday without having to use an ident server. So I
dont know that is the problem.I consider them a security risk and wouldnt use
one unless I had to.I am on Freenode now without one.So your rejection might
be caused by something else.

Actually there is a channel on Freenode called #mandrake-offtopic that might
be most appropriate for off topic chat.I am there now and it could use some

I took someones advice and disabled supermount in Mandrake Control Center and
rebooted my computer. Then I created my own removable media icons on the
desktop which will mount the drives on click. Then I deleted the old ones
which would not mount on click. Now I am happy because I have full
functionality with my Floppy and CD-R.Thanx.

Maybe we can start an off topic list that people can optionally subscribe to
then the newbie and expert lists can be more strictly policed. We could call
it "Mandrake Off Topic"

I just installed the Java plugin and it was a lot easier than messing around
with j2re.They install automatically.I had to run my browser as root to have
permission to install. Then restart as user and voila you got java.

Phoenix 0.5 is great.I didnt like Opera cause the toolbar takes up too much
space on the screen and it doesn't render webpages the same as Mozilla based
browsers.Phoenix has become my browser of choice.Awesome.

I had the same trouble with DCC.Finally I went to the #xchat channel on irc
and they told me to enable "Get my IP from server" in the settings.

Settings/Setup/IP Address/Get my IP from Server

At the risk of offending some, I will give my thoughts, which will
probably be unpopular (dons flame-retardant suit).

1. This whole situation leaves me with an "unsettled" feeling. I am not
comfortable with "begging" as a business strategy and this is the second
time this year. From other comments I have seen, this is already
starting to get old for many.

2. Mandrake is one of the most popular distros. See
http://www.distrowatch.com/ Of all the distros listed, why does
Mandrake keep begging for cash? It looks to me like they are still
suffering from some _very bad_ business decisions, mostly unrelated to
Linux (the "repositioning as an e-learning company" fiasco). Are current
Mandrake users supposed to bail out the company for the sins of the
previous managment? Perhapsif Mandrake is to prosper (which is
different from survival).

3. It appears that current management is under tremendous pressure from
their venture capital investors to become profitable so their
investments will pay off. I am not sure that it is my responsibility to
contribute to this.

4. I use Mandrake, like it, and have purchased boxed sets. I wish them
well and hope they develop a viable business plan, but frankly, begging
is an embarrassment to the entire community. M$ must laughing its ass off.

5. If Mandrake dies the torch will be picked up by others and the Linux
community will survive. Those who support Mandrake now will move to
another distro and help it become stronger. The future of Linux is
bright, but there will be shakeouts along the way. Remember, that which
does not kill us makes us stronger. Will Mandrake still be standing at
the end of the day? I don't know, but the Linux community will be stronger.

Just my honest opinion.flame away.

mozilla-xft-1.2.1-3tex.i586.rpm can be found at
http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/linux/distributions/mandrake/9.0/rpms/

It is a version of 1.2.1 with xft anti-aliased fonts which was packeaged
by Texstar. Included in the rpm, IIRC, are java and flash. Use urpmi to
install and you should have no problems with dependencies.

I have been using this version since it first came out two weeks ago (it
installed in addition to the stock Mozilla that came with LM 9.0, so I
have both). I like it, except that it does not have a spellchecker yet
and like my previous versions of Mozilla it tends to crash every few
days. By that time I have 30 or 40 windows and tabs open, so I need to
clean things up anyway. Linux does not crash, of course, just Mozilla.

One thing I did, since I *hate* Flash was to find all instances of
libflashplayer.so and ShockwaveFlash.class and move them from /plugins
to a newly created /plugouts directory. No more annoying Flash ads and I
can move them back if need.

The more I think about it, it makes more sense to just keep a copy of
libflashplayer.so and ShockwaveFlash.class in one place, and copy it to
your plugins when you want to use it, and remove it when you don't want
it. That would work if you used several browsers or wanted it to work
across several user accounts.

I'm still scratching my head over why renaming doesn't work.

Todd

I just moved xl.so (my renamed libflashplayer.so) back to
/usr/local/mozilla/plugins from the new directory an sure enough: I have
Flash again.

I did a ls -i on xl.so and got an inode number of 158648. I then changed
the name to the original libflashplayer.so and did ls -i and the inode
number is the same, 158648. Apparently this is a hard link and just
changing the name does not matter. Does this make sense?

Very interesting Todd. Thanks for yor help and input. I am still very
much a newbie and not well versed at all in scripting. This will be an
opportunity for me to learn something. :-)

Meanwhile, I have found that although simply renaming the Flash files
seemed to stop Flash for a while it would reappear. I tracked down every
single libflash.so and ShockwaveFlash.class file I could find and
re-renamed them from libflash-off.so (I thought just adding -off might
be too similar) to xl.so and xs.class. No help... flash would not die.

Finally, I created a new directory in /usr/local/mozilla and moved the
Flash files from /usr/local/mozilla/plugins to the new directory. That
seems to have done it. Flash was gone from Mozilla, but was still in
Phoenix. After doing the same process in /usr/local/phoenix Flash was
gone there also. I have no idea why renaming the files did not work.
Could the paths have been recreated somehow after closing and reopening
Mozilla, or rebooting?

Thanks again for your help and ideas.

[newbie] disable Flash?

2002-12-04 Thread Mike Larson
A few days ago I installed Mozilla-xft 1.2.1 from Texstar's RPMs. It
includes Java, Flash beta plugin & realplayer plugin. Works great, but
does anyone know of an easy way to disable Flash for the 99% of the time
I don't want it? I have popups and most ads blocked by Mozilla and life
is good...except for those annoying Flash ads.

I am from Texas and actually it is a pretty progressive place in many
ways. The only Linux you can buy in stores where I live is Red Hat.

I ordered my Mandrake Cds from an online discounter.

Way late on this, but I had the same problem with xmms not starting from

I went back and found that "Open in a terminal" had somehow been checked

Regarding the BIOS settings, I think so- as far as I'm aware, at least
initially, the BIOS was untouched on both. As of yesterday, though, the BIOS

no noticable change.

I'll try an absolute minimum install, and see where I get with that- thanks

[newbie] Mandrake 9 & ASUS A7N266-VM Motherboard

2002-11-13 Thread Mike Norrish
Hi all!

We've got two machines in our office, both with identical configurations (at
end of post), which are both giving us grief...

First of all, on one machine, Mandrake won't even finish booting after
installation. Here's what happens:

1. Bootup freezes on "Finding Module Dependencies"

This happens every time, but I can Ctrl+C past it if I catch it in time. If
I DON'T catch it, then the cursor stops flashing (or vanishes), and the
bootup goes no further. I've heard that this can be caused by a miscompile
of the kernel, but since this is a fresh install I'm ruling that out.

2. Bootup freezes on assorted services

This is never constant, but the ones that freeze most often are Postfix, APM
and xinetd. Same as above, except for APM, which crashes faster than my
fingers can move to cancel it.

3. Screen goes blank partway through boot

If I manage to get past the above then the machine will occasionally go to a
blank screen and no further shortly afterwards. There are only a few things
loaded at this point- it's too early to be trying to load X.

4. X Loads, but freezes instantly

I've managed to get as far as X starting once and only once, and it froze as
soon as the mouse cursor appeared.

On the second machine none of the above occurs- it boots fine, and is able
to load X without any difficulties. However, the onboard Ethernet isn't
being detected, and attempts to install the drivers from the nVidia site
come up with "Not the right architecture"

Can anyone help with this?

CPU: AMD Athlon 1800XP
Motherboard: ASUS A7N266-VM (Socket A).
Sound: Realtek ALC650 (onboard)

Re: [newbie] Real Newbie security questions

2002-10-17 Thread mike
Richard, I don't use a dial up setup but did have fierewall issues
initally with 9.0. I uninstalled all the stock firewall tools,
shorewall, and didn't use the control center "drake" tools either.
instead, I downloaded firestarter and use it. it is very easy for a
newbie, and actually works. it even allows NAT connections, so I can
share my cable modem with my wife's box. ( again I didn't use the
connection sharing tool or firewall tool in control center as it broke
my connection to the internet. )

here is the url :
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake/Mandrake/9.0/contrib/RPMS/

the firestarter there is for LM 9.0

If you have setup any of the built-in firewalling tools, either remove
all traces of them, ( unless you can still surf and such ) or don't use
them. before someone flames me, I say this because on the four trys to
get them to work they kept killing my connection to the internet, or to
my LAN and I could not undo them no matter how properly I did it, and
would have to reinstall. they even would change my settings to their
defaults on reboots. I couldn't find any useful documentation on how I
must have set it up improperly or how I may have errors in the
settiongs. so I would humbly recommend taking a simple, though not
built-in approach. ( my problem maybe hardware or kernel related too )

Anyway,
with firestarter, all my ports show "stealthed "and unwanted packets are
rejected, and logged.

I send this because I couldn't find any good help for the drake tools
and had to figure out myself how to get a running firewall in place.

I must say though, that this is the first actually running and secure
firewall I've had running since 8.0. In 8.1 and 8.2 I could only get a
less than perfect firewall running.

anyway again, try it if you dare, it works for me ;-)

Richard Urwin wrote:
Hi,

OK, I'm a newbie at MDK 9.0 i586 of 5 hours standing.

I installed at the "higher" security setting.
I enabled the Firewall and depressed all the (other) checkboxes.

I then had two issues:
Users (except root) couldn't read the documentation. ie
"start"->Documentation->anything failed with access violation. The
documents in question were readable, but the directories in which they
sat did not have execute permission for 'other'.
The firewall did not appear to let through *any* traffic. I checked with
my ISP that I was connected and authorised, and routing was correct, but
at least ping (UDP/echo?) and DNS traffic were blocked.

I have now reverted to "standard" security and "allow everything"
firewalling. These issues have gone away.

With a low ram setup all kinds of other errors tend to show up.
also if you have even one flaky chip on a set of ram modules it can
screw up everything.
If you just want to try linux on that laptop try mandrake 7.2 or 8.0,
or try one built for a 486. as you'll note below I run three versions,
but run 8.0 all the time as it
works the best with my setup. ( no it's a amd 1700+ on an ep-8kta3l+ MB,
32mg Nvidia card and a SB Live gamer sound card
and three Hard drives. ) but I got 8.0 to run on a 486 with 32 or 48 mg
or ram.

give it a try and use blackbox or such for a window manager to begin
with.

No, the ISO images are a special kind of file. They contain all of the
data and directory structure needed to write a whole CD. That's why the
files are usually bigger than a CD will hold. You will need to find
where it says 'create CD from iso image' in your CD burner software and
choose that. Then it will ask for the image file. Make sure it is set
to 'iso' then point it to the iso file you downloaded. After that, the
image file will tell it everything else it needs to do.

Mike you need the following 3 .iso's the first two are nearly 700 Mb so you
need 80 min CDs to burn the image.
Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso
Mandrake90-cd2-inst.i586.iso
Mandrake90-cd3-i18n.i586.iso

When you get on one of the ftp sites, if you do not see these files then
click
up on the directory to the next higher level until you see a folder with
iso
as it's label, go there. I think they have fixed the links to go to the
right
place now. Welcome to adventure called Linux, it is worth the trip. HTH

You do not need to install both versions, when it asked for 1.3.1 you can just
use 1.4 instead just make sure you set the path. You dont need both versions.
Lime wire works very well with just 1.4 installed.

Actually, here's what the Mandrake Store told me via e-mail:
"The Standard Edition comes with 2 Installation CDs plus one commercial
applications CD

The PowerPack adds 1 International CD, another Commercial application
CD, Sources CD and Contributed Software CD.

StarOffice ($USD 40 value) is also bundled with the PowerPack."

[newbie] nfs permission denied

2002-09-20 Thread Mike Barnard

I have just finished setting up nfs exports to machines on a network (server LM8.1 and clients LM 8.1 and SuSE 7.2). im using NIS for logins into the linux boxes. previously, it exported all home directories well on every login. but after i changed the path of the home directories from /home/std to /home/students, everything went crazy. NIS still logs in well for the SuSE boxes but the are no exports at all, not the home directories or the other shared directories. I always get the message on the client side  mount : /home/students failed, reason given by server: Permision denied and so is the case with the other exports on the server, the /var/log/messages gives me this report rpc.mountd: refused mount request from 192.168.2.10 (masaba2.tech.mak.ac.ug.2.168.192.in-addr.arpa) for /home/students (/home/students): no DNS forward lookup!
all my permissions are set up OK, my name server is running well. is there anything im missing out on??? On the LM 8.1 client boxes, NIS has totally refused every attempt to make it function. i have set up everything but failed to get the message YP_PROC DOMAIN NOT BOUND and cant log in either.wouldnt mind so pointer to help me out. thanks Mike (please send a reply also to [EMAIL PROTECTED])

[newbie] KDE is hosed !!!

2002-09-11 Thread Mike Settle

Wow - Shades of Microsoft !!! I installed (using SoftwareManager) on this
Win98/ML8.1 dual boot system (P233MMX IDE 10G & 2G), and somehow it really
messed up KDE. Now, no matter what I do - Ksplash, Konqueror, Konsole,
Krusader, whatever - I get this error box telling me that it "returned error
11 (SIGSEGV) which is usually caused by a bug in the program". I click on
"OK" - But, the ap doesn't load and I can't do anything - I can't even get
to a shell !!! I've been getting around it by using gNome and Nautilus,
etc., etc., and I don't seem to have any problems with it. I've
uninstalled, and re-installed all the KDE stuff - But, nothing seems to
change. Since all this started, my screen (S3 Trio video, Dell 1025DTM
monitor) seems to 'flash' ever so often - But, that might be just a
coincidence. I can unload and then reload ML (good excuse to go to 8.2, I
guess), but I'd really like to know what has happened and how to fix it.

[newbie] nis password change doesnt work

2002-09-04 Thread Mike Barnard

I have a network that has a samba serving as the pdc, manages my windows logins, roaming profiles and all.
I have recently finished configuring nfs/nis over mandrake 8.1 as the server and SuSE linux 7.2 on the client side. all my exports are working fine and nothing could be better, except that i cant change the passwords over nis.
whenever i try to using "yppasswd" i get the reply as

Changing NIS account information for mKwatampora on tech.mak.ac.ug.
Please enter old password:
Sorry.
mkwatampora@tech:~>

the password information isnt changed. when i change the password in linuxconf, i can login only when using a windows machine, but cant login with the new password on any linux machine. the troublesome bit comes in because on the linux machines, i can login with the old password that i have just changed over linuxconf.

I have tried to merge the smbpasswd and passwd files but some daemons dont take of when i do this. i have tried creating a new password list to work from but still no hope. Is there anything i am missing? are there any bugs with these two distributions because im thinking of kicking on of the two out.

I have the latest version of ypserv, ypbind and yptools and nfs-utils. i really dont know why it doesnt work. help anybody.
Thanks Mike

Didn't it find the card when you rebooted?

If not maybe kudzu isn't set to run at startup.
or the card isn't supported. or it's configured wrong.

What card are you trying to use, and what version of Linux are you
using?

an effective answer depends on version and card.

Re: [newbie] sound problems

2002-07-10 Thread mike

though I am not a Linux guru by any means,
I would like to concur with the thoughs of Lyvim.

I have severial win only type bits of hardware, like my Nvidia card, Win
hp printer,
etc. and have found that as LX mentioned it was only a matter of
configuration.
In fact I like to try to put LM on older hardware to see if I can and
with only a few exceptions, ( mostly limited because of the gui
requirements in the latest releases )
I have had only minor problems, or issues which are of little real
importance. For example, I can't get LM_sensors to function properly on
one of my boxes running 8.2.
This is a non issue for me because I have an external readout for temps
anyway, and besides I'm sure it will be corrected soon anyway.

It's funny how there seems to be a view of some that older hardware, and
older versions of Mandrake, are not worth the effort. it's also amusing
how many of these who bash,
some older piece of hardware or OS, was something they praised not that
long ago.
Cutting edge is all well and good, but it also has it's down side of
needing tweaking to run really well on a large base of configurations. I
personally prefer LM 8.0 over any version so far, as I can get it to run
everything on everything I have. I like many of the new features of 8.2
and it runs better on my laptop, but on my main box, athlon 1 gig,
ep-8kta3 pro MB, Nvidia tnt, SB Live, 3com NIC's, adaptec 2906 scsi, 8.0
runs much better. Why should I or anyone change when I can do everything
I want with my hardware and a perfectly good older version of
mandrake???

This of course is only my humble opinion, and Your mileage may vary
I know I could have said IMHO and YMMV but it's still readable Yes?

Tongue very much in cheek ;-)

Re: [newbie] Ok you got me started

2002-07-02 Thread mike

To jump in here ,

I have had problems with LM_sensors in 8.2 as well.

in 8.0 it works perfectly. under 8.2 only one of the sensors is seen,
and it registers
the a cpu temp of 127 degrees C. quite silly and wrong. I can make it
read a correct
value, but the value never changes. I would like to have this working
properly, so I can move past 8.0 I have this setup on a Epox 8Kta3 Pro
MB/ 1 gig athlon, 512 mg ram, three HDs and 32mg TnT video card ( not
that that matters here )

Any observations or advice for me too would be nice Thanks !!!

Dennis,

If you just want to change the Outlook format on an individual basis, before
you send, click Format/Plain Text - To change your default format, in the
Outlook screen click on Tools/Options/Mail Format. You'll see a drop down

I have upgraded LM8.1 to 8.2 twice, once leaving StarOffice 5.2
in place
and once after uninstalling 5.2. In the first case, SO Writer would
load
and function for a while -- and suddenly disappear completely.
I suspected 5.2 had caused a problem, and tried an upgrade on another
installation (8.1 to 8.2) Now SO 6.0 seemed to be running okay, but
when I try to save a file I get this notice:
StarOffice 6.0
Error saving the document Untitled1:

The operation was started under an invalid parameter.
Also, trying to run setup. it starts to load, and the icon hourglass
runs, and then it also disappears.
An help will be greatly appreciated.
Bob
Bob, if you know where the main files are for star office, and I suspect
they are in /usr/local, go there and check permissions on the
/usr/local/soffice file (or whatever it is called). If you don't know, do a
slocate, or locate or whereis or[oops didn't finish)
to find the file and check the permissions. The above seems to have gone out
as HTML, can someone confirm. I am having a devil of a time figuring out how
to get outlook to stop sending in HTML.

If the correct entries are in the /etc/modules.conf and /etc/modules
then you may want to preload the scsi device via initrd.

mkinitrd creates filesystem images which are suitable for use as
Linux
initial ramdisk (initrd) images. Such images are often used for
preloading the block device modules (such as IDE, SCSI or RAID) which
are needed to access the root filesystem. mkinitrd automatically
loads
IDE modules, all scsi_hostadapter entries and all modules in a
probeall
scsi_hostadapter .. line in /etc/modules.conf, and raid modules if
the
system's root partition is on raid, which makes it simple to build
and
use kernels using modular device drivers.

Any module options specified in /etc/modules.conf are passed to the
modules as they are loaded by the initial ramdisk.

Ref: man mkinitrd

the main reason I use a / partition and a separate /home is

for the occasional update and or reinstall. that way I only change the
operating part of the system, without losing all my personal files, like
music, or documents , etc. a reasonable / partition ( in my case a 4-5
gig partition ) has always been ample. on my laptop I only have a 2 gig
root partition and a 3 gig /home. still plenty. It's really handy to
have different partitions for different purposes too. I also have a
/backup partition of 10 gig on my main box I use for storage. I would
hate to lose anything on that partition if I had to reinstall because i
broke something playing around with stuff.

and there are no doubt other good reasons to use multiple partitions.

My two cents. ;-)

what I do now on my Vaio pcg-fx215 notebook is to do a halt instead of

You have to make mount points from the control center, but if you don't
know root password, you will have to reinstall to put it back in .

How did you lose the password? did you delete something? or change
something?

make sure you really have lost your root password before you reinstall
though.

[newbie] Attempting to re-compile Mandrake vmlinuz-2.4.18-6mdk

2002-06-08 Thread Mike Pruden

Need some help re-compiling version 2.4.18-6mdk of
mandrake linux.  I installed this version from a cdrom onto my
laptop.  The problem I am encountering is that this version enables
automatic power management by default.  On my laptop SIS630 this causes my
laptop to power down every few secounds.

I am familiar with using make -e on tar files and
changing the parameters that I need to change, but since I installed this from a
cdrom I do not find any tar file in the /usr/src directory, or anywhere else
that I can think to look.  The only kernel that I can identify is in the
/boot directory, and it is listed as vmlinuz-2.4.18-6mdk.  I am not sure
how to re-compile this to enable me to turn off the automatic power management
option.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your help. I appologize for my ignorance. Star Office 5.2
apparently came with a GUI database editor for Adabas. SO 6.0 does not seem
to have one!

I have used Microsoft Access since their version 1.0 for relational database
creation and management. Created several business specific databases with it.
The database editor in Star Office 5.2 is very much like Microsoft Access
and was easy for me to use and figure out. I rely heavily on the GUI at this
point with Linux.

I tried opening up the data sources in SO 6.0 as you suggested but it's not
exactly what I am looking for. How do I create a new database with it? Adabas
with 5.2 was very easy to use. I can't figure out how to get the same GUI
editor with 6.0 (maybe it's no longer there). Do you have any other
suggestions?

[newbie] Star Office 6 Adabas question

2002-06-04 Thread mike

Currently I'm using Mandrake 8.2 with Star Office 6 and Adabas installed for
database.

I previously used Star Office 5.2 with Adabas and had set up several small
relational databases for home and business use. I had no problems.

With SO 6, I can't figure out how to even launch Adabas After installing
the Adabas package from the PowerPack Edition cd's, it automagically set up a
link in my menu under "Office Accessories" titled "Adabas Installation". I
launched that, Adabas went through it's setup. It created an Adabas sub
directory in my home directory (just like it should), there were no errors
noted during the installation.

The problem is that I can NOT find an executable file anywhere on my system
to launch the Adabas GUI! In SO5.2 Adabas would launch from inside the Star
Office menus.

I checked to be sure Adabas was installed using the Software Manager and it
shows as installed.

If anyone knows what executable I need to launch to get Adabas running,
please let me know.

Many thanks in advance for your help.
Mike

Thank you to all of you who replied to my question. I definately think I got
a bad batch of cd's here.

I do like the Mandrake distro a lot and there is some great commercial
packages on the cd's. But, the basic packages should be there too! I hope
this gets resolved. Maybe they should provide free corrected cd's to all the
folks that have spent good money for the Power Pack Edition. Just doesn't
seem right that people are paying for a defective set of discs.

I suppose I should have checked the archives for this list before posting.
Sorry about that but I was frustrated.

I'll be checking RPM find and my download cd's for the packages that I need.

Thanks again to all who replied.

with file from package textutils-2.0.17-7mdk.

As a result, wine will not install.

I am running Mandrake 8.2 download edition and the rpm that I downloaded was
the right one for Mandrake.

Any help with this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: [newbie] Worm

2002-05-26 Thread Mike Larson

You received the Klez.h variant.
http://www.viruslist.com/eng/viruslist.html?id=4292

I received this and dozens of other infected emails from a friend whose
Windows computer got infected. Naturally, I was not affected since I am
using Linux, but it was a real mess for him to clean up. It even sent
out a few copies of itself with my email address (which it obtained from
his address book) as the return address.

Re: [newbie] Installing 7.2 (!) - X window system does not load

2002-05-23 Thread Mike Ewer

Thanks to everyone for the ideas so far. We're trying
the 8.2 download now, not sure if IE6's FTP is
downloading this thing in binary format, at 2hrs+ it
had better be!

Tried the XFdrake, messed with the settings a bit and
that did not work.

Was not aware of the 640x480 problem, I am going to
try that now. We only have the one power cable for
both machines at the moment so this is a long process
of shutting down and starting up alternately...

I remembered a key to using any Unix system if
something goes wrong:
Rule 1) Check the logs
Rule 2) Always do rule 1 first

I looked at install.log and it reported the following
close to the end of the setup:
"The graphic card does not like X in framebuffer"

That does not look good. I don't want to have to buy
another graphic card after forking out for some more
RAM for this old crate! It was meant to be free! ;oP

Thinking of the card, it did have some issues on
Windows until I wiped both (!) installed drivers and
loaded the latest from ATI, then it worked OK. Any
idea how I would go about a similar procedure (if
possible) in Mandrake?

Thanks again for any input you can offer!

[newbie] Installing 7.2 (!) - X window system does not load

2002-05-23 Thread Mike Ewer

It took us a year to get around to it (partially due
to not having a 2nd machine to put it on) but we
installed Mandrake 7.2 today. We bought it last year
and just sat on it until now ;o)

We put it on a box that really has no other uses in
life - a 100mhz Pentium with a recently upgraded 64MB
SDRAM (MemTest runs fine), a Rage II+ video card, an
old CTX monitor (1451ES), and a 3Com NIC card. No
sound card (yet). That's about the sum of the
components... a really dismal machine but without
WinBloat loaded it should run fine, right?

Maybe not.

We have attempted installation a few different times,
trying out a few different options, with the same
result. The X Window System does not load. We just get
the text screen and the login allows directory
browsing and all that fun Unix stuff, but no GUI!!! We
tried booting using the KDE and GNOME, neither worked.
We tried using different monitors in the setup. Same
result. Just as the text login prompt appears, the
screen will go black for a second and then return to
the text display.

Although I have some Unix experience via Telnet/SSH, I
am completely new to Linux on my own machine, and need
some help here.

The only obvious one I have thought of is the video
card being on the fritz, but it displayed the
installation GUI ok, and displays the bootup sequence
in GUI format with no problems.

Anyone got any ideas?

What would stop the opponent from transferring a copy of su

I have cox-internet ( which is high speed cable ) very easy in LM 8.0,
8.1, 8.2!

do you have one or two network interface cards?

Only one is needed if you only have one pc at home , if you connect to
any other
pc, you will need two 1.) for the cable modem 2nd) for network.

in setting up the network card follow this:

open up control center, next open network/internet, choose connection
for a one only setup use the configure button and let the auto detectand
configure do it's thing. only choose to use dhcp to connect, when it's
through, apply and exit
control center. reboot is a good idea then it all should work.

if you want to share the connection with another pc in the house or
office,
write back , it will take a bit more time to explain.
