Running HardDrake (aka Mandrake Control Center 0.61) shows one soundcard entry for Creative Labs SB Live! EMU1. Two entries were showing up (one for the SB card and one for the onboard VIA chipset sound, but I've since disabled the onboard sound in BIOS). The kernel module showing is snd-card-emu10k1 so that seems correct. Oddly, I do hear the opening KDE jingle when KDE opens up on boot, but absolutely nothing from then on in any app. When CDPlayer starts up, the disc spins up, CDDB finds the album title and tracks, but no sound. (I know the device works, 'cause that's how I burned the ISO's for LM8). :) This is probably bad news: running sndconfig as su gets nothing but command not found. Where do I start to track this puppy down? Thanks in advance. Part of the problem that this newbie has run into on this is that there's so much information on configuring sound cards that I'm not sure what the most efficient order of tracking down the problem is. RE: [newbie] RC1 vs. 8.0 ?
OK - my last comment on this, I didn't mean for this to start a thread and hope it dies with this - I didn't make any judgements like you concluded - of course I know the beta's had some bugs - I was testing them - my last statement was that I would download the 8.0 and see how it was - I naturally would expect that trivial, surface bugs would be fixed - I was not "offended" by the English errors, but that still qualifies as errors in the English release candidate, the same as it would count as an error in a user manual - I was not bashing Mandrake as you seem to think - and yes, I did miss the RC1 release date - but, testing on beta 3 was still going on with Crashtesters, even as the RC1 was out and even as 8.0 was released - seems cross-purpose to me, but thats just how it looks to me. I did not have a heart attack or over-react as you have to my email. I have been testing the betas and generally had nothing to report as all components seemed to work great on my system. So, mea culpa, mea culpa - I wasn't passing judgement, regardless of what you and a few others have thought 'nuff said philomena At 01:08 PM 4/20/2001 -0700, Todd Flinders wrote: I don't think you should be making any of these judgements until you look at the 8.0 final. It was several weeks, actually. You may have downloaded RC1 late, but that doesn't mean that work on the final was rushed. As far as the language remember that Mandrake is a French based company. I'm sure they utilize developers from many different countries. It is silly to assume that English will be every Mandrake developer's mother tongue. When you consider they have about 50 languages on Mandrake, you should be able to excuse some grammar/spelling issues AT LEAST until the final comes out. I'd be curious to see how much you were offended with the French translations in the betas. Finally, before you have a heart attack do not that this is a .0 release. .0 usually signifies a significant change. .0 tends to be the most likely to have issues. Now the first people looking at 8.0 tend to be very impressed. Some are even claiming it to be the best Mandrake to date. Maybe it's perfect. But likely, there will be some issues along the way. Be patient and understanding. Don't carry your issues from bugs in a development release to the final version. Re: [newbie] Triple boot?
Hi, Here's what I do - edit the file menu.lst which is in the /boot/grub subdir. There should be an entry there that looks something like this: title linux kernel(hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda15 In this sample, the menu choice will be listed as "linux", the kernel will boot from hda5, and the root partition is in hda15. The (hd0,4) entry sort of starts counting from zero as 1, so that 4 partitions up from "zero" is hda5. When I installed, I installed Mandrake 7.2 first, since that is stable, and had it install GRUB to the MBR. You can also do this by running install.sh in the /boot/grub subdir. Then, for each subsequent OS install, I directed the installs to NOT load a bootloader, and just create a boot disk. Then, I went back into 7.2, cut and pasted the existing 7.2 boot entry, and edited each entry for where to find the boot partitions for each OS. So, I have 5 different OS installs, and grub handles it all very nicely. Since I install grub during the installation process, I haven't had to install the package on its own - is that causing your error ? I know that this can be set this up by also using only one boot partition, and specifying different names for the kernel files. But, I had no luck whatsoever doing that, so just went back to this method (having different boot partitions for each distributions install). Hope this helps... philomena Kipling Cooper wrote: * Philomena [EMAIL PROTECTED] [15 Mar 01 22:51]: I have GRUB setup to boot each of the /boot partitions appropriately Hi there! I haven't run into anything like that, possibly since I have setup the partitions before I do the installs. For example, I have my machine setup with about 16 different partitions - when I installed any of the distros, I made sure to use the expert or custom mode, so that I could specifiy the mount points. I only mount the partitions that the install should see, so that distro isn't even aware of the others. This may not be the most efficient method, but it does work. Right now, I have Mandrake 7.2 and the 8.0 beta, SuSe 7.1 and the latest RedHat beta, Wolverine. Each has its own /boot, root and /home partition - I haven't tried sharing any partitions. Its been a while since I have re-installed 7.2, but I will be doing it soon, and I've installed about 5 or 6 times. I have always been prompted with what type of install do you want to do, and select Expert, and then workstation. I then set up my partitions, select what partitions are to be formatted or not, select all my packages, and then its off to the races. When all is done, then comes printer, network, etc setup. I can't remember about the /tmp wipe prompt, but I know its there. This is all from the 7.2 ISO images I downloaded from the Mandrake site. Yes, it uses DiskDrake, but then what else would Mandrake GUI-driven install use ? I'm not sure at all what you could be doing such that you don't get all the flexibility that is available in the install. One thing I have wished for is the ability to save my selected install packages on floppy, so that I don't have to pick them all over again at each install. Possibly are you selecting to Upgrade instead of clean install ? I haven't tried the upgrade option, but maybe that does not give the options to select packages, as it will find out your installed base automatically. philomena At 12:00 PM 1/29/2001 +, you wrote: On Sunday 28 January 2001 07:38 pm, you wrote: I presume that since you posted on the newbie forum that you are a newbie, at least to Mandrake. I get about 100-150 pieces of mail in ea. 8 hours. Why don't you give it another try by reinstalling and choose the 'recommended' option and use the DiskDrak partitioner (expert). Sorry that can't be done, because 1. The First thing that is asked is keyboard, then which partitions do you want. Wipe DIsk, use existing, or expert. I ALWAYS use expert. Re: [newbie] KDE 2.0 Themes and Sound
KDE2 does allow more customization, but I found it a bit disconcerting that a nice user-level feature like the Theme Manager was removed. Was nice to play around and see what happened with different themes. Also, seems many folks thought this was a Mandrake lack in 7.2, as opposed to a change in KDE2. There is an app in the menu system called "Legacy Theme Importer". I haven't had much luck with it, but I didn't pursue it too much. This topic has been brought up a few times on this list since 7.2 was released, but I haven't seem too many responses describing success stories in bringing in old themes. philomena At 03:55 PM 12/5/2000 -0600, you wrote: On Tuesday 05 December 2000 07:12 am, Marcia wrote: Dear All, I just asked about the theme manager, also, but so far no one has answered. In Control Center , there are already different themes: Look 'N Feel | Style | Widget Style and theme Then in | Colors, you can further customize any theme you chose above Then by r-clicking on any Windows title bar you can change the borders, 'Decoration', several choices, like 'system ++' for example 'Course, you can use any pic file for backgrounds, just put them in /home/tom/.kde/share/wallpapers/AngelBoris.jpg . ^^^ your 'user' dir ^^^ YMMV, but I'm in love ; Put in several and you can have different ones for each desktop. Bottom line, due to all the possible combos of the above, is you have the ability to make your own themes. Did SuSE and LM share any partitions ? I have them both booting with no problems on one hard drive. Are you using KDE ? Re: [newbie] Grub/LILO--why?
I prefer grub for a few small reasons - you can make changes on the fly and try them out without having to remember to run lilo to effect your changes, and to make the changes permanent you simply edit the menu file- again, as soon as you save your changes, thats it - nothing else to execute. I have heard that the newer lilo versions are more graphical and friendlier, but I'm sticking with grub. [newbie] size of log files
Hi, I installed PMFirewall recently and have been getting a ton of the same message in my syslog and messages files - they are "deny" messages, but of my own static IP address, so I must have something set up wrong. As a consequence, these files have been getting huge, and have caused me some problems when the partition has run out of space. I notice that there is a .gz file of each of these files. Is there a system parameter that based on the filesize automatically compresses the file ? If so, how do I manipulate that so that my system behaves while I track down the firewall problem ? Thanks, philomena
Re: [newbie] size of log files
Hi Paul, That was it - I did a 'man logrotate' and got tons of info - the files can be controled based on timing as well as size - very neat. The same happened with /var/log/messages - there was a messages.gz, which I didn't create. Is there a system parameter or service that monitors and controls the size of specified log files ? If so, I want to set that max file size to something small, so that my system doesn't go haywire while I am workign on the firewall issue. Hi Philomena, Once a week a cronjob runs, executing the /etc/cron.weekly jobs In that directory there probably is a job called 'logrotate'. This is what creates the tar.gz files. Paul

yes, you can get lots of information that way and it can be very helpful with debugging - I used that to help fix my own SBLive! problems - but the original question (not from me) was about problems configuring an SBLive ! card in 7.0 , and someone asking that if the Win driver's were uninstalled, and he reinstalled mandrake from scratch, might that solve his problem - my answer to that was no. philomena At 04:32 PM 10/16/2000 -0400, you wrote: In a message dated 16-Oct-00 15:22:58 Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: While Windows has taken "unpredictable" to a new high, it's none of the Windows software drivers are even loaded when Linux is running so you're right; their residence on a hard drive won't affect anything. This is the case with pci cards sure linux detects its there but doesnt allways detect what it is, or who made it. So using windows to find a known driver or using key things like serial or model numbers you can sort through the text of many inf files and can find the maker, the exact type of device it may be, and from there you can find the companys site to see if they make linux based drivers or provide info on how to set up bios settings to better support the device in linux.

Hi chronos, go to the Mandrake website, click on "Mailing Lists" - its one of the links under "Support" on the left side of the page - then, scroll down to the bottom of the mailing list page and you will find links to the expert and newbie archives. Also on the Mandrake website, in the left-side list of links, under "Developer", you will find a link to the HardDrake site, if you want to try that. On that site, click on Download, and then grab the rpms for HardDrake, detect, and detect-lst. If you use kpackage to install these RPMs it will describe any unresolved dependancies when you open up the RPMs. Anything that is missing you can find in the Mandrake Cooker site, which you can find a link to in that Developer section. Re: [newbie] sb live! sound cards
Hi, Did you downloaded a file with the extension tar.gz ? The file name should be something like emu10k1-20001013.tar.gz. This is a compressed file that you first have to uncompress. You do that with the command tar xvzf filename.tar.gz this will create a subdirectry called /emu10k1 that has all your files. In there is a readme you should take a look at, but if I remember , what you do is change to that directory and issue the command "make". When that finishes up (with hopefully no errors), you issue the command "make install". That will actually install the driver. But, read the readme file - it may have more information than I am remembering now. philomena chronos wrote: To Philomena- Hi, dumb question what do you mean compile the driver ? I am using 7.1 (and the beta 7.2), neither of which use Lothar anymore - the recent version of Harddrake configured my card correctly, for the first time. You could maybe try downloading and using HardDrake instead of Lothar, but you may need to update your kernel along with several other supporting packages. Things change, ideas change and society changes. You can't solve the problems of the present and future with ideas from the past, they don't work. They are simply outdated. I don't want to get rid of the second amendment at all, because the very thought that I may own a weapon keeps the idiots out of my house. However you should recognize that the amendment that grants the right to bear arms (the 2nd) included the provision only because the United States did not have a well armed militia ready for combat, and ready to defend the citizenry should the need arise to do so, therefore it was a requirement to bear arms in the 18th century. Do I want to take away your guns? No I do not. Do I want to take away guns from children, yes I do, do I think a mandatory 7 day federal waiting period should be required on firearms purchased? Yes I do. Do I think that people who allow access to firearms to minors should be subject to the same criminal punishment as the minor who committed the act? Yes I do. Do I think you need to have an automatic rifle to defend your home, or to hunt a wild animal? No I do not. Do I want to take "gun rights" away from people? No I do not. The bottom line is this, states control gun laws, not the federal government, in the state I live in (FL) it takes less time to buy a car than it does to purchase a weapon, granted both are equally as dangerous when not used with care. However the purpose of a car is simply transportation, that is not the case with a weapon. The federal government needs to handle gun registrations and gun laws, not the states. One of my problems with Bush arises from the fact that he has openly stated "that should be controlled by the states..not the federal government" on several occasions. This leads me to believe that he is going to take this stance on most cases where the states may be involved in a decision of law, and to me that means a weaker federal government. Of course the only ads or things I have heard him say are negative comments towards his opponent, and that also leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The Republican party has spent so much effort and so much time attempting to make the Democratic party look bad (and granted the Democratic party has played right into it with thoughtless acts) that they have weakened themselves by not developing any strong leaders in the party. After this happened they turned to Bush, he has money and he has his fathers credentials (which based on his Presidency, and the state of the economy when he left office) are shaky at best, still, he is their best candidate and rather than have him (or allowing him the freedom to display some leadership initiatives) to discuss issues they have him attack Gore at every turn on a morality bent. Granted Gore has made it easy with his unbelievably inept claims, such as the fact that he "invented the internet". But at least he is sticking with issues (for the most part) as opposed to attacking Bush at every turn with a dirty campaign. How do we fix the problems in this country? I think getting away from the electoral college would be a good start, at least it would be an attempt to get the special interest groups from controlling every election and might make our votes count. I have plenty of other ideas but I think I have rambled long enough, if you would like to share your views, or you would like hear more about what I have to say, please e-mail me privately and I will discuss them with you. RE: [newbie] Trying to do a rpm -Uvh
I'll have to track down my notes, but I also had to get updated drivers for my nvidia geforce 256 card - that did the trick for me to be able to run Q3. In Cooker, there are a few other 4.01 xfree RPMS - theres a XFree86-libs4.0.1, a devel rpm, docs, etc.. Maybe you should try installing or upgrading to 7.1 - is that an option for you ? if you do an expert install you have the option to install and start 4.01. Re: [newbie] usefull? install info question
Hi Adrian, I believe the auto install disk is one you can use to execute the exact same Mandrake install which you just completed on another PC - useful if you're setting up multiple machines. RE: [OT] Who uses Linux? (was RE: [newbie] Mandrake...too many ap ps?)
I think that sliding bar thing is explained more clearly in the install screen on 7.1 - I believe it has to do with ranking the system-importance of the packages you selected so that the install can make a decision on what to install and what to kick out if you don't have enough disk space. This is an odd thing and I guess it is trying to be helpful, but I don't think it succeeds completely. In 7.0 I think it was explained reasonably in the little install guide. If I needed to go back to some point in the install, which I needed to do a couple of times, I used the column of "lights" on the left and used that to navigate back to where I wanted to restart from. cheers, philomena At 10:04 AM 9/20/2000 -0500, you wrote: Specifically, what was mostly confusing was after I selected that various packages it asked me how many megabytes of the selected packages I wanted install with a slider bar to adjust the "level" I guess. I didn't get it at all -- because I don't know how many megabytes I want, all I knew was that I wanted packages A, B, and C. I just accepted the default and then it told me I might not get all the packages that I had selected. Also, and this is beside the point, there were areas during the install where I clicked the cancel button but it didn't back me out (I can't remember now, I think it was when I was setting up the network) and I had to turn off the machine and restart. One holds man page lookups, the other the actual working commandline and a thirdjust in case. It's sortof an analog to the days when I had a commandline and a whole bunch of manuals open on the desk :-) 2. Take a class :-) 3. Buy lots of books and learn to use man A good start on the books would be Running Linux and Linux in a Nutshell, both by O'Reilly press. Linux in a Nutshell is the best reference around and the other one provides some good insights into how Linux works and why. A fourth "method" I'd add to your list is "Don't forget everything you know about Windows." I know that's probably heresy here but I'm watching two Linux newbies now and if they'd just think, "What would I do if I were in Windows?" they'd be less confused about some of the stuff. If you view /mnt/windows as equal to C:, it's not so wierd to have to either click on an icon to get there or cd /mnt/windows to get there. But one of my newbies asked me what the difference between these two were and yet he's comfortable at the DOS prompt as well as on the Windows desktop. In short, yes, Linux does a lot of things different from the way Windows does them (and better too) but file handling and stuff like that is very similar. Hmmm...I'll add a fifth method. If you're coming from Windows and run into a problem with Linux, ask "Do I know how this is handled in Windows" before you start chasing your tail. Don't accept an answer like "I just run CD Creator." Rather, using that example, when you start trying to write to your CD-writer, ask "Do I know how CDs are written under Windows?", "Do I know the difference between CD-RW and CD-R writes?", "Do I know what is going happens when I answer that question at the end of CD-Creator where it asks me whether I want the CD-R closed or not?". If you can answer yes to these kinds of questions under Linux, it's a simple matter of finding the analog tools under Linux. If you can't, you need to read some about the actual process. This "fifth method" helps send you down the right road. Cheers --- Larry Look at me, I still don't know that much even after 2 years :-) Dan

You should also open kmixer (or whichever mixer app you prefer) and make sure your speaker volume is turned up, as well as CD volume - these are often set very low by default - CD volume sometimes is off completely. cheers, philomena Ed Santiago wrote: root wrote: Well it appears as if the install worked fine except that my sound card doesn't work. Re: [newbie] ESS Audio still not working
I think the command is "sndconfig", not "soundconfig" cheers, philomena "Julio C. Are you sure it is not working? I mean, have you enabled system sounds in KDE and turned up the volume for CD players? I'm not sure how to enable sounds in gnome if that is the desktop you are using. Check in KDE control center to see if system sounds is enabled. And click on the small speaker icon on the task bar to see where the volume is set. If you have already done these things, I would go to Konsole and "su" and type in " soundconfig" and try configuring that way. "Julio C. Re: [newbie] RPM problem thanx
this isn't answering your command line question, but what you described about how you thought kpackage should work via the GUI is exactly how it works for me - I download the RPM file, click on it once, kpackage pops up and I click on the Install button - if it yells at me about dependancies, I fix those, and then all is fine - works like a charm for me. I'm not sure where the file type-executable associations are set up - I'm sure someone else can answer that and then maybe you will have more luck with the gui. cheers, philomena (different "phil"!) [newbie] app like Adobe Photoshop/photodeluxe
Hi all, does anyone know of any apps that have the bells and whistles for manipulating photos and digital images as does the Adobe packages ? I've started doing some work retouching old B/W images, but would prefer porting it all over to the linux side. thanks, philomena
RE: [newbie] app like Adobe Photoshop/photodeluxe
Thanks to all who replied - its great to be able to try out these packages without having to pay the $600 (!!!) price tag for the latest version of Photoshop for Win - another reason I want to port this work to linux ! Re: [newbie] SoundBlaster Live! Configuration Issues
You could try downloading the latest verison of HardDrake - it will require a an updated kernel, alsa, (both from the Mandrake update site) and and a few other packages - I also got the latest version of the emu10k1 driver from creative labs - after I did that, the card worked like a charm. Some people get their SBLive! Value card working right away just by configuring with sndconfig - thst didn't work for me - I had to do the upgrading. cheers, philomena Guy and Jeanne Bergeson wrote: I have installed Mandrake 7.1 in a dual boot configuration on a Gateway computer running a 550 MHz P3. Windows seems to need the digital output and Linux seems to need the analog output. In addition when I attempt to configure the soundcard I get the following: Error in play call! Sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp'. No such device Also on shutdown I get a fail on the Aux Mixer line. Is this just a driver issue? Have I missed something in the install and configuration?
