simpler, better way to get this working.

Running HardDrake (aka Mandrake Control Center 0.61) shows one soundcard
entry for Creative Labs SB Live! EMU1. Two entries were showing up
(one for the SB card and one for the onboard VIA chipset sound, but I've
since disabled the onboard sound in BIOS). The kernel module showing is
snd-card-emu10k1 so that seems correct.

Oddly, I do hear the opening KDE jingle when KDE opens up on boot, but
absolutely nothing from then on in any app. When CDPlayer starts up, the
disc spins up, CDDB finds the album title and tracks, but no sound. (I know
the device works, 'cause that's how I burned the ISO's for LM8). :)

This is probably bad news: running sndconfig as su gets nothing but
command not found.

Where do I start to track this puppy down? Thanks in advance. Part of the
problem that this newbie has run into on this is that there's so much
information on configuring sound cards that I'm not sure what the most
efficient order of tracking down the problem is.

Thanks in advance for helping me sort it all out.

   hdb is 40gigs, Mandrake 7.2, split up into /, /home, /usr, /var, and

RE: [newbie] RC1 vs. 8.0 ?

2001-04-20 Thread Philomena

OK - my last comment on this, I didn't mean for this to start a thread and
hope it dies with this - I didn't make any judgements like you concluded -
of course I know the beta's had some bugs - I was testing them - my last
statement was that I would download the 8.0 and see how it was - I
naturally would expect that trivial, surface bugs would be fixed - I was
not "offended" by the English errors, but that still qualifies as errors in
the English release candidate, the same as it would count as an error in a
user manual - I was not bashing Mandrake as you seem to think - and yes, I
did miss the RC1 release date - but, testing on beta 3 was still going on
with Crashtesters, even as the RC1 was out and even as 8.0 was released -
seems cross-purpose to me, but thats just how it looks to me. I did not
have a heart attack or over-react as you have to my email. I have been
testing the betas and generally had nothing to report as all components
seemed to work great on my system.

So, mea culpa, mea culpa - I wasn't passing judgement, regardless of what
you and a few others have thought

First of all, remember that they are all betas and
prereleases. They TOLD you it had bugs. They TOLD
you it wasn't finished.

Also, it was not two days between RC1 and Final. It
was several weeks, actually. You may have downloaded
RC1 late, but that doesn't mean that work on the final
was rushed.

As far as the language remember that Mandrake is a
French based company. I'm sure they utilize
developers from many different countries. It is silly
to assume that English will be every Mandrake
developer's mother tongue. When you consider they
have about 50 languages on Mandrake, you should be
able to excuse some grammar/spelling issues AT LEAST
until the final comes out. I'd be curious to see how
much you were offended with the French translations in
the betas.

Finally, before you have a heart attack do not that
this is a .0 release. .0 usually signifies a
significant change. .0 tends to be the most likely to
have issues. Now the first people looking at 8.0 tend
to be very impressed. Some are even claiming it to be
the best Mandrake to date. Maybe it's perfect. But
likely, there will be some issues along the way. Be
patient and understanding. Don't carry your issues
from bugs in a development release to the final
version. Judge it for what it is.

[newbie] Scanner detection in RC1

2001-04-18 Thread Philomena

I just installed the RC1 release - it all went fairly smooth, but I have
one problem - my USB scanner was detected as a SCSI device - its an HP
Scanjet 5300C - just barely supported by sane, but getting closer. An
"unknown" device was detected on my USB ports, so I am guessing that
HardDrake found the device, but hasn't identified it correctly. The SCSI
port reports the actual model, so it knows its there, but xsane thinks
there is no device present. Any suggestions as to what/where I can start
looking at to make sure the device is detected correctly ? I want to try
and see if I install VMWare for my Windows software that the scanner can
be operated that way, but if the device isn't properly recognized, I don't
think it will work.

Yes, it is very possible - what I do is only mount the partitions

Re: [newbie] Triple boot?

2001-03-30 Thread philomena

Hi,

Here's what I do - edit the file menu.lst which is in the /boot/grub
subdir. There should be an entry there that looks something like this:

title linux
kernel(hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda15

In this sample, the menu choice will be listed as "linux", the kernel
will boot from hda5, and the root partition is in hda15. The (hd0,4)
entry sort of starts counting from zero as 1, so that 4 partitions up
from "zero" is hda5.

When I installed, I installed Mandrake 7.2 first, since that is stable,
and had it install GRUB to the MBR. You can also do this by running
install.sh in the /boot/grub subdir. Then, for each subsequent OS
install, I directed the installs to NOT load a bootloader, and just
create a boot disk. Then, I went back into 7.2, cut and pasted the
existing 7.2 boot entry, and edited each entry for where to find the
boot partitions for each OS. So, I have 5 different OS installs, and
grub handles it all very nicely.

Since I install grub during the installation process, I haven't had to
install the package on its own - is that causing your error ?

I know that this can be set this up by also using only one boot
partition, and specifying different names for the kernel files. But, I
had no luck whatsoever doing that, so just went back to this method
(having different boot partitions for each distributions install).

Hope this helps...

I haven't run into anything like that, possibly since I have setup the
partitions before I do the installs. For example, I have my machine setup
with about 16 different partitions - when I installed any of the distros, I
made sure to use the expert or custom mode, so that I could specifiy the
mount points. I only mount the partitions that the install should see, so
that distro isn't even aware of the others. This may not be the most
efficient method, but it does work. Right now, I have Mandrake 7.2 and the
8.0 beta, SuSe 7.1 and the latest RedHat beta, Wolverine. Each has its own
/boot, root and /home partition - I haven't tried sharing any partitions. I
have GRUB setup to boot each of the /boot partitions appropriately

So, I would recommend repartioning your extra space and then see what happens.

put the cd in the drive, and "power" on/off your VMware virtual machine

2001-01-29 Thread Philomena

Its been a while since I have re-installed 7.2, but I will be doing it
soon, and I've installed about 5 or 6 times. I have always been prompted
with what type of install do you want to do, and select Expert, and then
workstation. I then set up my partitions, select what partitions are to be
formatted or not, select all my packages, and then its off to the races.
When all is done, then comes printer, network, etc setup. I can't remember
about the /tmp wipe prompt, but I know its there. This is all from the 7.2
ISO images I downloaded from the Mandrake site. Yes, it uses DiskDrake,
but then what else would Mandrake GUI-driven install use ?

I'm not sure at all what you could be doing such that you don't get all the
flexibility that is available in the install. One thing I have wished for
is the ability to save my selected install packages on floppy, so that I
don't have to pick them all over again at each install. Possibly are you
selecting to Upgrade instead of clean install ? I haven't tried the upgrade
option, but maybe that does not give the options to select packages, as it
will find out your installed base automatically.

I have a caldera box, and I have been using mandrake since v6.2 yeah, I am
still new. Frankly this kind of question on the expert forum would have been
a joke-IMO. Not to mention the fact, I was on both forums and the inbound
email exceeded my ISP limits and bounced mail (200 ea messages and unlimited
size-I had too many messages), carefull if you might think about judging
someone, you don't know what their circumstances are, I am also on 5
different IPSEC lists and a few other misc programming lists. I get about
100-150 pieces of mail in ea. 8 hours.

  Why
don't you give it another try by reinstalling and choose the
'recommended' option and use the DiskDrak
  partitioner (expert).
Sorry that can't be done, because
1. The First thing that is asked is keyboard, then which partitions do you
want. Wipe DIsk, use existing, or expert. I ALWAYS use expert.
Choice of using anything other than DiskDrake is not available, choice of NOT
formatting partitions is also not available. Choice if installation class
is NOT available, choice of what the system is used for is NOT available.

Note: even so, I have no problem with this formatting because I always back
up my /home - /root to a winblows partition before I start tweeking on the
system. SO, all I have to do is re-copy my .bashrc, bookmarks, firewall
scripts etc back over. It's relatively painless. Cept I hate the fact that
ipchains is never installed.

The thing I DO have a problem with is the fact that I am NEVER prompted with
the following menus:
Please choose one of the following classes of installation:
Recommended
Customized
Expert

Furthermore I am NEVER prompted with:
What is your system used for:
Workstation
Server

Hi all,

Is there a way to save the packages selected during an expert install of 7.2,

The auto-install feature is not feasable to use on a multi-boot workstation,

KDE2 does allow more customization, but I found it a bit disconcerting that
a nice user-level feature like the Theme Manager was removed. Was nice to
play around and see what happened with different themes. Also, seems many
folks thought this was a Mandrake lack in 7.2, as opposed to a change in
KDE2. There is an app in the menu system called "Legacy Theme Importer". I
haven't had much luck with it, but I didn't pursue it too much. This topic
has been brought up a few times on this list since 7.2 was released, but I
haven't seem too many responses describing success stories in bringing in
old themes.

Well i usually shy away from these questions cause i believe the
answer is readily discernable/available... but what t'hey

From my perspective, KDE2 allows much more customization than KDE1
did, even tho it currently lacks but a few third party themes and the
planned future manager.

In Control Center , there are already different themes:
Look 'N Feel | Style | Widget Style and theme

Then in | Colors, you can further customize any theme you chose above

Then by r-clicking on any Windows title bar you can change the
borders, 'Decoration', several choices, like 'system ++' for example

'Course, you can use any pic file for backgrounds, just put them in

Put in several and you can have different ones for each desktop.

Bottom line, due to all the possible combos of the above, is you have
the ability to make your own themes. So who needs

I prefer grub for a few small reasons - you can make changes on the fly and
try them out without having to remember to run lilo to effect your changes,
and to make the changes permanent you simply edit the menu file- again, as
soon as you save your changes, thats it - nothing else to execute. I have
heard that the newer lilo versions are more graphical and friendlier, but I'm
sticking with grub. I don't think the differences bewteen lilo and grub are
not that great - more just a matter of slight preferences.

Log in as root, go to /boot/grub, and run ./install.sh

wow - if you fall from that high horse you're on you might seriously injure
yourself ! What does a user review of a product have to do with knowing how
the platform works ? Only an "expert" is allowed an opinion? If you tell
someone you like a movie, it has nice special effects but the acting sucks,
should you keep quiet unless you are a trained actor and special effects
wizard ? Anyone can discuss how they like or don't like a product - if they
want to post their opinions on their own website, go for it. Either disagree
with the review or agree - how you can make comments like that about
someone's product review is beyond me. Linux is all about being open and
sharing opinions and knowledge.

Re: [newbie] domain setup-update

When I got their service last March, you had to provide your own NIC, but
it included the modem and installation of modem (although they really
didn't have to do anything, just run the line from my phone jack to the
PC). That special offering was not on their website - when I called the
sales number was told about that. Yes, I use linux, and from my
perspective, there was nothing different with setting up DSL access via
Linux as Windows - the DSL modem is external, and hooks into an Ethernet
card in my machine. So, I set it up as if I am on a LAN. The Flashcom
requirements say they need a generic "operating system". I pay $45 a month
for 2 static IP addresses, with access speed of 416/208, as well as using
them as my ISP and email.

They didn't have tosetup anything - they gave me all the IP addresses I
needed (mine, DSN, gateway) and that was it. It may be different for web
hosting - I'm not doing that, although I am thinking about it.

[newbie] size of log files

2000-11-13 Thread philomena

Hi,

I installed PMFirewall recently and have been getting a ton of the same
message in my syslog and messages files - they are "deny" messages, but of my
own static IP address, so I must have something set up wrong.
As a consequence, these files have been getting huge, and have caused me some
problems when the partition has run out of space. I notice that there is a
.gz file of each of these files. Is there a system parameter that based on
the filesize automatically compresses the file ? If so, how do I manipulate
that so that my system behaves while I track down the firewall problem ?

Thanks,
philomena

/var/log/syslog file when it reached some filesize. The same happened
 with /var/log/messages - there was a messages.gz, which I didn't create.
Is there a system parameter or service that monitors and controls the
size of specified log files ? If so, I want to set that max file size to
something small, so that my system doesn't go haywire while I am workign
 on the firewall issue.

 Hi Philomena,

Once a week a cronjob runs, executing the /etc/cron.weekly jobs
In that directory there probably is a job called 'logrotate'. This is what
 creates the tar.gz files.

R-clk on the clock, you need%I:%M:%S %pfor Time format on

I also use Flashcom - during install, I didn't select to setup a DSL/ADSL
connection - I selected a LAN connection. This works fine with Flashcom. As
for the host name, I think you can use a generic 'computer.flashcom.com'
(don't key the quotes) - I don't think it matters too much. You don't have
to re-install. Use DrakConf and set up a new internet connection.

[newbie] amazing...

2000-11-01 Thread philomena

I hate to say this, but I am in shock..

I just installed 7.2 from the current ISO images - did an expert install and
installed everything- and for the very first time, of any Mandrake or SuSE
install, ALL of my devices (except my USB HP scanner - not supported yet as
far as I know ) worked out of the "box" - my SBLive! card, DSL, floppy, ZIP,
CDRW (although I haven't tested if the writing part works), printer (HP
Deskjet 950C) all work !!! Printouts look incredible. I can't believe I
don't have to coerce my sound card into an operational state.

KDE2 installed fine - XFree 4.01 looks great - my flatscreen monitor looks
excellent This is GREAT

Konqueror looks fine - no more ugly fonts - Kmail set up as easy as pie

One thing - amyone know where in KDE2 you can install new themes ? I don't
see the Theme Manager that used to be in the Control center.

This is a pure standalone, at home, machine - nothing too fancy, but that may
change now.

Way to go Mandrake !

this maybe true, however you can get info using the inf file found in windows

Hi chronos,

go to the Mandrake website, click on "Mailing Lists" - its one of the
links under "Support" on the left side of the page - then, scroll down
to the bottom of the mailing list page and you will find links to the
expert and newbie archives.
Also on the Mandrake website, in the left-side list of links, under
"Developer", you will find a link to the HardDrake site, if you want to
try that. On that site, click on Download, and then grab the rpms for
HardDrake, detect, and detect-lst. If you use kpackage to install these
RPMs it will describe any unresolved dependancies when you open up the
RPMs. Anything that is missing you can find in the Mandrake Cooker site,
which you can find a link to in that Developer section. Mandrake has its
own rpms for alsa there - not sure if those are the same files
referenced in that email or the files you get from the site mentioned
below.

You can find all the the alsa information and downloads at

Hi,

Did you downloaded a file with the extension tar.gz ? The file name
should be something like emu10k1-20001013.tar.gz. This is a compressed
file that you first have to uncompress. You do that with the command
tar xvzf filename.tar.gz

this will create a subdirectry called /emu10k1 that has all your files.
In there is a readme you should take a look at, but if I remember , what
you do is change to that directory and issue the command "make". When
that finishes up (with hopefully no errors), you issue the command "make
install". That will actually install the driver.
But, read the readme file - it may have more information than I am
remembering now.

I am using 7.1 (and the beta 7.2), neither of which use Lothar anymore -
the recent version of Harddrake configured my card correctly, for the
first time. You could maybe try downloading and using HardDrake instead

other supporting packages. I have been able to successfully update my

My IRQ and DMA assignments look similar to yours - the negative numbers

that does not mean it was right, that means that is just the way it was.
Personally I was shooting a .22 rifle when I was 13 years old at Boy Scout
camp, does that mean I am going to go out and attack people with it. No. And
I never implied that you would do the same. Things change, ideas change and
society changes. You can't solve the problems of the present and future with
ideas from the past, they don't work. They are simply outdated. I don't want
to get rid of the second amendment at all, because the very thought that I
may own a weapon keeps the idiots out of my house. However you should
recognize that the amendment that grants the right to bear arms (the 2nd)
included the provision only because the United States did not have a well
armed militia ready for combat, and ready to defend the citizenry should the
need arise to do so, therefore it was a requirement to bear arms in the 18th
century. Do I want to take away your guns? No I do not. Do I want to take
away guns from children, yes I do, do I think a mandatory 7 day federal
waiting period should be required on firearms purchased? Yes I do. Do I
think that people who allow access to firearms to minors should be subject
to the same criminal punishment as the minor who committed the act? Yes I
do. Do I think you need to have an automatic rifle to defend your home, or
to hunt a wild animal? No I do not. Do I want to take "gun rights" away from
people? No I do not. The bottom line is this, states control gun laws, not
the federal government, in the state I live in (FL) it takes less time to
buy a car than it does to purchase a weapon, granted both are equally as
dangerous when not used with care. However the purpose of a car is simply
transportation, that is not the case with a weapon. The federal government
needs to handle gun registrations and gun laws, not the states. One of my
problems with Bush arises from the fact that he has openly stated "that
should be controlled by the states..not the federal government" on several
occasions. This leads me to believe that he is going to take this stance on
most cases where the states may be involved in a decision of law, and to me
that means a weaker federal government. Of course the only ads or things I
have heard him say are negative comments towards his opponent, and that also
leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The Republican party has spent so much
effort and so much time attempting to make the Democratic party look bad
(and granted the Democratic party has played right into it with thoughtless
acts) that they have weakened themselves by not developing any strong
leaders in the party. After this happened they turned to Bush, he has money
and he has his fathers credentials (which based on his Presidency, and the
state of the economy when he left office) are shaky at best, still, he is
their best candidate and rather than have him (or allowing him the freedom
to display some leadership initiatives) to discuss issues they have him
attack Gore at every turn on a morality bent. Granted Gore has made it easy
with his unbelievably inept claims, such as the fact that he "invented the
internet". But at least he is sticking with issues (for the most part) as
opposed to attacking Bush at every turn with a dirty campaign.

How do we fix the problems in this country? I think getting away from the
electoral college would be a good start, at least it would be an attempt to
get the special interest groups from controlling every election and might
make our votes count. I have plenty of other ideas but I think I have
rambled long enough, if you would like to share your views, or you would
like hear more about what I have to say, please e-mail me privately and I
will discuss them with you.

Do you still think of me as puppet?

I think that sliding bar thing is explained more clearly in the install
screen on 7.1 - I believe it has to do with ranking the system-importance
of the packages you selected so that the install can make a decision on
what to install and what to kick out if you don't have enough disk space.
This is an odd thing and I guess it is trying to be helpful, but I don't
think it succeeds completely. In 7.0 I think it was explained reasonably in
the little install guide.

If I needed to go back to some point in the install, which I needed to do a
couple of times, I used the column of "lights" on the left and used that to
navigate back to where I wanted to restart from.

all -- because I don't know how many megabytes I want, all I knew was that I
wanted packages A, B, and C. I just accepted the default and then it told
me I might not get all the packages that I had selected.

Also, and this is beside the point, there were areas during the install
where I clicked the cancel button but it didn't back me out (I can't
remember now, I think it was when I was setting up the network) and I had to
turn off the machine and restart.

I have 7.0 installed...

i'm a 15 year old with no experience whatsoever with anything but
windows (unless you count the array of prehistoric apples i played with
at school as a child) , and i managed to install linux on my second try,
with only a cursory glance through the documentation... i have no doubt
that it would have been on my first try, had partitionmagic not read the
free space on one of my existing partitions as a separate partition...
that threw me into vast amounts of confusion for about half an hour, and
i dithered with diskdruid for another half hour, before trying fdisk and
finding it much easier.

i confess i impulse-bought mandrake a few weeks ago... the macmillan 6.5
distro; the only linux i've ever seen offered for sale in my little
corner of new zealand. i saw it and simply had to have it, being a
wannabe geek. since then i've realised just how out-dated it is, but i
suppose i'll have to make do until i figure out how to update it...
which will probably take quite some time, as i haven't gotten much
beyond setting up kppd (although not correctly; i messed up the dns
settings, or whatever they're called -- i never seem to know the right
terms for things).

this lack of progress can generally be attributed to the fact that when
i was installing x-windows, it refused to accept settings other than
400x600 in 8-bit colour, and with a desktop like that, i can't even see
whole popup windows. i resolved to do something about it, but haven't
actually *done* that something yet, because the thought of exposing
myself to those settings again is enough to make me turn a pale shade of
green and flee the room... that and i've been busy writing a book, doing
early spring-cleaning, planning a trip to america and suffering from
influenza. but as soon as i have time, i *swear* i'm going to learn
linux. then, *maybe*, i'll upgrade myself from wannabe geek, to
geek-in-training...

the duchess.

p.s. i have the wardrobe, though! six t-shirts from thinkgeek.com! and i
have a stuffed penguin! and i devour slashdot upon a daily basis... oh,
god, *please* tell me i'm not a total failure and i have the makings of

  Three methods I found:

While I would agree with your methods to some extent, I'd modify them
just a wee bit.

  1. Loose X windows for a little while and learn some command
  line

This is where I disagree. There is nothing better when learning than
to have 2-3 xterms open. One holds man page lookups, the other the
actual working commandline and a thirdjust in case. It's sortof
an analog to the days when I had a commandline and a whole bunch of
manuals open on the desk :-)

  2. Take a class :-)
  3. Buy lots of books and learn to use man

A good start on the books would be Running Linux and Linux in a
Nutshell, both by O'Reilly press. Linux in a Nutshell is the best
reference around and the other one provides some good insights into
how Linux works and why.

A fourth "method" I'd add to your list is "Don't forget everything you
know about Windows." I know that's probably heresy here but I'm
watching two Linux newbies now and if they'd just think, "What would I
do if I were in Windows?" they'd be less confused about some of the
stuff. If you view /mnt/windows as equal to C:, it's not so wierd to
have to either click on an icon to get there or cd /mnt/windows to get
there. But one of my newbies asked me what the difference between
these two were and yet he's comfortable at the DOS prompt as well as
on the Windows desktop. In short, yes, Linux does a lot of things
different from the way Windows does them (and better too) but file
handling and stuff like that is very similar.

Hmmm...I'll add a fifth method. If you're coming from Windows and run
into a problem with Linux, ask "Do I know how this is handled in
Windows" before you start chasing your tail. Don't accept an answer
like "I just run CD Creator." Rather, using that example, when you
start trying to write to your CD-writer, ask "Do I know how CDs are
written under Windows?", "Do I know the difference between CD-RW and
CD-R writes?", "Do I know what is going happens when I answer that
question at the end of CD-Creator where it asks me whether I want the
CD-R closed or not?". If you can answer yes to these kinds of
questions under Linux, it's a simple matter of finding the analog
tools under Linux. If you can't, you need to read some about the
actual process. This "fifth method" helps send you down the right
road.

RE: [newbie] app like Adobe Photoshop/photodeluxe

2000-08-23 Thread Philomena

Thanks to all who replied - its great to be able to try out these packages
without having to pay the $600 (!!!) price tag for the latest version of
Photoshop for Win - another reason I want to port this work to linux !

Cheers,
philomena

Hi Philomena.

The package is The Gimp (www.gimp.org). At first it feels a little bit
awkwards but after a while you get the hang of it.

 Hi all,

does anyone know of any apps that have the bells and whistles for
manipulating photos and digital images as does the Adobe
 packages ? I've
started doing some work retouching old B/W images, but would
 prefer porting
it all over to the linux side.

 thanks,
 philomena

Re: [newbie] SoundBlaster Live! Configuration Issues

2000-08-17 Thread philomena

You could try downloading the latest verison of HardDrake - it will require a an
updated kernel, alsa, (both from the Mandrake update site) and and a few other
packages - I also got the latest version of the emu10k1 driver from creative labs -
after I did that, the card worked like a charm. Some people get their
SBLive! Value card working right away just by configuring with sndconfig - thst
didn't work for me - I had to do the upgrading.

I have installed Mandrake 7.1 in a dual boot configuration on a Gateway computer
running a 550 MHz P3. The sound card I have is a SoundBlaster Live! There is some
incompatiblity between what windows wants and what Linux wants. Windows seems to
need the digital output and Linux seems to need the analog output.

In addition when I attempt to configure the soundcard I get the following:
 Error in play call!
Sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp'. No such device

Also on shutdown I get a fail on the Aux Mixer line.

Is this just a driver issue? Have I missed something in the install and
configuration?
