In a terminal the command
urpmf libgnutls
will identify which packages contain files with that string in their name.
/usr/lib/libgnutls.so.11 is in the package libgnutls11

If you had been installing Evolution with urpmi or the software install GUI
then it should have installed libgnutls11 for you.

If you go here : http://rpmfind.net/
type in the "libgnutls.so.11" and then click search it will bring up the main
lib file that that piece is in. Chances are it is on your disks but you can
also urpmi that lib. I find this a good way to discover where ".so." files
live. Maybe someone has a better method? HTH

1.) You can reboot
2.) Open a term, run "oaf-slay" and "bonobo-slay" and
"evolution --force-shutdown"
3.) Open a term and run "killall -9 gconfd-2"
4.) Go to your ~tmp directory, and in the orbit-yourname
directory, delete all the crap in there.

...then fire up Evo again.

I got an answer from the Evolution mailing list, so I thought I'd post
it here for the archives:

does "rm -rf /tmp/orbit-$USER" and then logging out and
back in again work for you?
(insert your user name for $USER)

well yes it worked for me!!!

[newbie] Evolution broken :(

This morning I log on to find that Evolution won't start up :(

[For those who were not followwing the earlier thread, I just upgraded

Now when starting Evolution I get the following error messages:

Cannot activate component OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Mail_ShellComponent :
The error from the activation system is:
Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/INV_OBJREF:1.0'

Cannot activate component OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Addressbook_ShellComponent :

Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/INV_OBJREF:1.0'

Cannot activate component OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Calendar_ShellComponent :
The error from the activation system is:

Cannot activate component OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Summary_ShellComponent :
The error from the activation system is:
Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/INV_OBJREF:1.0'

And then Evolution starts, but there's nothing to do. It says "(Not
folder displayed)" in an empty screen.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Open a term and su to root.
Type "bonobo-slay" then "oaf-slay" then "killall -KILL gconfd-2" - then
cd to your ~/tmp dir and anything in ~/tmp/yourname-orbit delete - then
try firing up Evo again.

[newbie] Evolution 1.4 crapped out

2004-07-06 Thread Terence J. Golightly
List,
I was reading my email and I tried to open another program to check
something and was unable to. So I killed evolution and then was able to
open other programs, but when I tried to start evolution agian the
following appeared:

Cannot activate component OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Mail_ShellComponent :
The error from the activation system is:
Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/INV_OBJREF:1.0'
Cannot activate component
OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Addressbook_ShellComponent :
The error from the activation system is:
Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/INV_OBJREF:1.0'

Cannot activate component OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Calendar_ShellComponent :
The error from the activation system is:
Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/INV_OBJREF:1.0'
Cannot activate component OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Summary_ShellComponent :
The error from the activation system is:
Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/INV_OBJREF:1.0'
Evo eventually started but I was unable to read my email. A gray area
appeared where messages would be displayed with a message pertaining to no
folders found or such.

So I tried:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] terryg]$ evolution --force-shutdown
Shutting down evolution-wombat (Evolution Calendar local file backend /
Evolution Addressbook local/LDAP backend)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] terryg]$

I tried to start evo again. No go. Next checked system messages but
nothing stood out.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Terry

You did a restore, from, er, what? Did you reinstall your OS? Is the

Generally, when you're having a problem with Evolution, it's going to be
either a GTKHTML issue, a BONOBO issue, or an OAF issues; you should be
able to get into your /tmp directory and delete the /tmp/orbit-username
directory and then fire up Evolution again - and as well, if there are
any /tmp/evolution-blah directories in there, you can delete them as
well prior to firing up Evo. (NOTE: these tmp directories might be also
under ~/tmp - meaning, in your home directory under tmp)

You might also want to double check your /etc/ld.so.conf file and have
all the proper lib dirs in there as in:

/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib

..and then re-run ldconfig to rebuild the path cache.

You could, however, install Ximian's RedCarpet which is a free download
(http://www.ximian.com) and use it to update/upgrade Evolution and all
the proper libraries that it requires...

Hi again Stephen,

I downloaded red-carpet and ran it. It tells me the whole system
regarding evolution-stuff is up to date.

I then backed up the ~/.gconf and ~/evolution directories. Rename both
the ~/.gconf/mail/evolution subdirectory and ~/evolution. Ran evo. It
started up clear, but the accounts were still in there?? Tried creating
a signature and things crashed again. What could yet another place be to
look at? Does anyone have a clue? This is getting interesting...

Why not try something simple; first, whilst in Evo, click TOOLS =>
SETTINGS => COMPOSER PREFERENCES => SIGNATURES and delete anything
that's in there; restart Evo. Go back to the COMPOSER PREFERENCES and
try adding a signature again.

If that doesn't work, you might want to update/upgrade GTKHTML and the
other associated libs; you can use Ximian's Red-Carpet to update Evo and
the libs without a hassle/problem. Also, you might want to just
completely upgrade Evo to the current standard for MDK 9.1 which is
1.4.4 => runs alot more smoothly and faster...

Has anyone else experienced the Evolution mail client losing their email
addresses and saved email? This has happened to me twice. Funny thing
is that Evo did not lose my mail account info so its not like my whole
config was lost. At this point I've switched to Thunderbird.

To find out what your hostname.domainname is:
cat /etc/sysconfig/network

Mine looks like:
$ cat /etc/sysconfig/network
HOSTNAME=abbmdk.mshome.net
NETWORKING=yes
$

>From there you get:
yourhostname=abbmdk
yourdomainname=mshome.net

My /etc/hosts looks like
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
127.0.0.1 abbmdk abbmdk.mshome.net

Good luck,

Adolfo

Did you replace your localhost line?

You have to have the 2 lines:

127.0.0.1 yourhostname yourhostname.yourdomainname

Try adding to your /etc/hosts:
127.0.0.1 yourhostname yourhostname.yourdomainname

It fixed that problem in my box.

I have also read that leaving blank or comment lines in /etc/hosts is
another source of problems for Evolution.

[newbie] Evolution "remembers" old accounts

2003-12-23 Thread Brian Parish
I recently fixed one of my 9.2 systems a little too aggresively and
ended up re-installing. Copied back the evolution folder and everything
there works as expectedexcept...

When I reply to a message - any message - evolution sets the sender
address to an old account long deleted. Somewhere this account is still
lurking in the system, but why evo has decided to use it in this way is
beyond me.

Anyone know how to kill it for good? Every time I forget to switch the
From: address, I get a "relaying not allowed" response and have to
resend. I've had a look through the evo folders and removed anything
that has to do with old accounts, but no change in behavior.

All the best for the holiday season - almost time to hit the beach and
forget entirely about e-mail for a while!

TIA
Brian

[newbie] Evolution

2003-10-17 Thread Max . Benitz
I like the "look and feel" of Evolution as a mail reader, but I have a
couple of questions for ya'll:

How can I cause it to open Konquerer as a browser rather than Mozilla?
Konq is listed first under KDE file associations, and I can't find anywhere
in Evolution where there is a place to make an Evolution-link-to-browser
change.

Many of the current mail readers also allow us to set filters based on
whether the sender is our addressbook. Sure I can probably do that with
arcane fecthing and processing programs, but is there no provision in
Evolution (I'm using whatever version comes with MDK 9.1) to do this? I've
looked at every tab, every menu 4 or 5 times now and can't find it, but
sometimes I miss stuff. Those of you who have upgraded to 9.2, is
there a newer version of Evolution with this ability included?

Thanks,
Max

It sounds like a perms problem.

If you've put the evolution subdirectory back into your
/home/yournamehere directory, you should su to root, then do:

chown -R mylogin:mylogin evolution

...this would then change the permissions to YOUR permissions; once
you've done that, then fire up Evolution again.

I'm assuming that when you backed up Evo you did back up that entire
subdirectory structure, yes?

A trick I use to make Evo run a tad bit faster is to put the evolution
subdirectory structure on a faster drive (SCSI) and create a link to it
from my /home/mynamehere directory - this also makes for doing great
automagic backups without disturbing other bits'n'bobs...

I'm still having a problem getting the laptop version of Evo to recognize the files from the desktop version.  The files are copied from the floppy to the laptop but when Evolution is activated, the new files are immediately replaced by the original empty files! It took me awhile to realize what was happening.  The copied files are about 80 kB but when Evo pops up, they're back to 579k.  Why won't the laptop Evo recognize the new files?  The permission problems have been addressed.

That was my first thought and I did a chmod to the evo directory without much luck, chown didn't help either.  I tried removing evo and downloading again, but things just got worse; every time I clicked on the Summary icon, evo crashed.

I tried using rpm -e to remove the package but the message was "the package is not installed".  When I used rpm -i to install, it says that it's there and up to date.  The evolution binary is missing from the /usr/bin directory.

I'm a little puzzled as to what I should do next.

We sort of covered it, but only with negative results and in relation to
a much older version. Thought I'd give it another spin as I still can't
believe it's not there. Good idea about scripts though. I'll do some
google-ing and report back if I turn anything up.

The new look is a vast improvement. Didn't realize just how much until
I went back the the version on the 9.1 distro after installing the
cooker version and finding that it didn't work at all.

Didn't we cover this already before? Like a few months back or something
like that?

Meanwhile, you might want to check into the Evo listing - there are
scripts you can create to do such as that - or maybe a script is already
created...

BTW, what do you reckon about the "new look" of Evo? I'm still using
1.3.3 - mainly because I don't want to download 50+ mb right now...and
I'm carefully rearranging my home network...

Just installed 1.4.4 Very nice - even synch with the Palm V works! I
still can't find a way however, of archiving or deleting old calendar
entries. So currently I have well over 2000 appointment records being
synchronized with the Palm V, taking many minutes.

Am I missing something? This a basic requirement, so maybe I am.

Hi folks,

Are there anyone have experiences with "character encoding" configuration
using, e.g., Chinese, with Evolution? I can't read mails in Chinese from my
friends there by Evolution, but It seems Kmail can do that. I have tried
several times but I always failed. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks.

If you don't find what you need in Evo, you could try KOrganizer.
It's less all-encompassing, calendar, reminders and to-dos, but it

Here's another thought, have you examined the file to see how the data
is appended? Is it in a chronological fashion? Crude, but perhaps you
can just simply delete all the data after a certain date by opening in a
text editor and selecting all the old data and deleting it...

Yes. You can either follow a particular process to export the mail from
Outlook into Netscape or Mozilla for Windows, then save the directory
containing the exported email and then import it into Evolution; or you
can locate "libpst" - this is a utility that SOMETIMES can import all
your folders and attachments and the likes into Evolution. The best way
to do so, though, is the "hard way" with the process as described above.

> 2) Can you syncronize Evolution to WindowsCE devices?

Sometimes. Depends on the device; best to check on the Evolution list
for further information concerning that - or better yet, check out the
Evolution section(s) at www.ximian.com

> 3) Can you syncronize Evolution to online calendars such as Yahoo?

See above.

No.

[newbie] Evolution questions

2003-06-05 Thread Leon Adato
I have to say that, coming from an M$ Windoze environment, where I
relied heavily on Outlook to manage email, calendar, and addresses,
Ximian Evolution is a terrific application to bridge the transition.

I've read several boards but found no definitive information on the
following Evolution-related questions:

1) Can you import Outlook email (from .pst files)?
2) Can you syncronize Evolution to WindowsCE devices?
3) Can you syncronize Evolution to online calendars such as Yahoo?
4) Can you syncronize email between a Windows machine running Outlook
and Evolution?

Details on each question follow:

1) Can you import Outlook email (from .pst files)?
===
I have found two basic thoughts on this: One is to install Mozilla on
the Windows machine, let *it* convert Outlook, and then import from
there to Evolution.

The other thought is to get Outport, convert the files and use
Evolutions File-Import to bring them in. The trouble I had with this is
that Evolution showed NO filters in the File-Import process. I got the
first 2 screens, then a progress box that said "scanning for Intelligent
Importers", then a blank dialogue box (with OK and Cancel, but no
filters to select).

2) Can you syncronize Evolution to WindowsCE devices?
===
I see that a tool for Palm devices is present, but aside from an article
on Chris Herrera's web site
(http://www.cewindows.net/wce/linux-serial.htm) I can't find anything
resembling an application. Not to mention what do to once you connect
(ie: linking to Evolution).

3) Can you syncronize Evolution to online calendars such as Yahoo?
===
Yahoo has their Intellisync applet, which push/pulls between several
email programs. I don't see a Linux-compatible option.

4) Can you syncronize email between a Windows machine running Outlook
and Evolution?
===
I have a desktop PC and a laptop, and like to keep my mail syncronized
between the two. With Outlook, I simply copied the .pst files over and I
was good to go (obviously, only one computer can be "in charge" at a
time). Is there any way to do this?

How about between two systems both running Linux/Evolution?

Thanks for everyone's support and help. Hopefully I'll be able to give
something back soon.

Leon

Hmmm. Guess so if I was willing to trust my ability to preserve the
file integrity, but anyway

thought I had an elegant solution. Turns out that if I click on this
file in Konq, it opens up in Korganizer. This has an archive/delete
function, which seems to work. I tell it to delete all calendar entries
older than a given date, it gives me a list of all the entries that will
be deleted and I say "do it" and save the file afterwards. My calendar
file shrinks from 1MB to 32K and all looks good. If I open the calendar
again in Korganizer, the old entries are gone.

Now I run evolution again. Bang, the file immediately reverts to 1MB
and the old entries are back. That's clever! Just in case this is some
sort of "I don't really delete, just move the pointer" type problem, I
tried copying the small file somewhere else, deleting the original, then
copying it back. Same result. Run evolution and all the old entries
are back.

Magic!?!?

Brian

anybody has Evolution running in 9.1? When I try to install the beta

So far I really enjoy evolution, and mandrake 9.1 as a whole. I may
never reboot into Windows again. :)

RedCarpet v.2.0 is tricky for the MDK installation. Firstly, you have to
install it along with the rcd stuff (a few bits and bobs of it); next,
you have to just reboot the machine so that the rcd (Red Carpet Daemon)
can start to inventory your system - it's checking all packages,
libraries and the likes - building it's database to check against what's
available for download/update. This can take a while. A fair while. Once
it's done, and once it's happy, mate, it's not bad at all. Better than
what I got under RHL...and the version 2.0 is fairly nice.

So far, I've upgraded to Evolution 1.3.3 along with some other nice
thangs...so I ain't gonna whinge about it...

..but overall, it does take some time to get the database built. First
connection to Ximian might choke'n'puke, but the second connection
should be finer than a summer day in N. Caroliner!

First run "killev", then run "oaf-slay", then delete all the Evolution

[newbie] Evolution not respecting Sent setting after upgrade to 9.1

2003-03-29 Thread Guy Rouillier
I upgraded from 9.0 to 9.1. I had downloaded Evolution 1.2.2 from the

weren't there. So I opened my local sent folder and there they were. I
opened up settings and edited my IMAP account settings, and sure enough,
it was still saying to put sent items into the Sent folder on the
server. I clicked the button to change this setting, and saw that it
was pointing the right place. I moved it and then moved it right back
again, and saved. That was enough to get Evolution putting the sent
items into the Sent folder on my IMAP server again. Weird.

[newbie] Evolution 1.2 for MDK9, SRC/MDK RPM's

2003-02-02 Thread Robert Wideman
I have been having problems trying to install Evolution 1.2 onto my MDK box.
I have (on my previous install) screwed up too many libraries playing with
the PLF's and such to get it installed. I have gotten the latest RPM:
# rpm -Uvh --test evolution-1.2.1-2.ximian.1.i586.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
libgtkhtml1.1 >= 1.1.6 is needed by evolution-1.2.1-2.ximian.1

libgtkhtml-1.1.so.3 is needed by evolution-1.2.1-2.ximian.1
libsoup.so.3 is needed by evolution-1.2.1-2.ximian.1
I have NOT found the 1.2.1-2 SRC RPM unfortunately...BUT i do have
evolution-1.2.1-2.ximian.1.src.rpm and this is what happens:
# rpm --rebuild evolution-1.2.1-2.ximian.1.src.rpm
Installing evolution-1.2.1-2.ximian.1.src.rpm
Executing(%prep): /bin/sh -e /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.72250
.snipped a bunch.
checking for db3 compiler flags... -I/opt/evo-db3/include
checking for db.h... yes
checking db3 header version... configure: error: Found db.h is not version
3.1.17
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.10343 (%build)

RPM build errors:
Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.10343 (%build)

Has anyone gotten the latest src.rpm AND gotten around this OR which package
do i update to get around/fix this issue?? OR is there a new MDK rpm for
1.2. OR do i just need to install this updates hoping that they wont break
another package?

Thanks
Rob

Re: [newbie] Evolution Sending

I think what he meant is

"offline or online, i don't care. don't send any emails until i tell you
so, evolution! keep 'em in the outbox first".

The M$ Outlook or Outlook Express has the option not to send messages
immediately.

That's what he wants, i guess.

In the GNOMECC, you can set the default browser/URL handler...I also
prefer using Galeon - because it's not bloated and slow...but that's
where ya change it mate...

Upon opening Evolution, click the connected cables icon in the lower

messages you write will go to the outbox until you explicitly chose to
send and receive messages (you do not need to switch to online mode to

That's a new one on me, mate. Hmmm...just went through all the possible
settings - can't figure. Now, if you're using SENDMAIL or POSTFIX, you
can trap stuff there before sending it...that much I DO know - because
occassionally I go into my SENDMAIL outbound queue and delete or stop a
message from getting out...but other than that, dunno...now THAT would
be a poser for the Evolution list...for sure...

Re: [newbie] Evolution password

2003-01-17 Thread Russ
Like maybe when you start Evolution you cannot access Inbox? You have to
close it and start the program again. At least that is what happened to
me several times. That problem seemed to have fixed itself after I
upgraded.

However, those two lines where not in that file so I added them.
Although I'm not sure what you mean by "rerun ldconfig" but I did shut
the computer down and boot it back up. Logged in and checked my mail and
it did not ask me for my password. Seems to have worked :-)

Thanks again

Hi there,

talking about Evolution (1.0.2)... i haven't been able to enter any
contact into my Evolution's Contacts. Anything wrong here or something
amiss?

Thanks a lot for the help.

As we've found on the Evo listing, there are heaps of niggling little
problems that can come of this - one being that you loose your folder
settings or sort order - another is loosing passwords - another is
loosing the "Summary" settings - overall, having a proper
/etc/ld.so.conf file is a basic thing - and some programmers don't
necessarily take the time to realise this or make modifications to the
RPM's.

So, by keeping a check on the /etc/ld.so.conf file, you're ensuring that
you WON'T have any problems...Por fin!

Re: [newbie] Evolution

2003-01-16 Thread Brandon Vanderberg
It is. There are a couple of ways to do it depending on your setup.
The cleanest way I've found is to install Mozilla on Windows and have it
import everything. Then copy that stuff to a Linux readable part. and
import to Evo.

There are also some apps written that'll do the same thing. Outport is
one I know of. A google search should get you going.

You can very easily add Evolution and Red Carpet both to your menu - but
it's dependent on what desktop you have. You can use the Mandrake menu
facility, or if you're using KDE, do a RIGHT-CLICK on the K menu icon
and choose EDIT - then add both from there.

Actually it is the other way round. Running a mail server can help you when
you are mobile.
If you try to send a mail via your ISPs mail server when you are not connected
directly to their network, it will usually not work because the ISPs mail
server will reject attempts to relay mails from outside their network
(another anti spam measure)

However if you have a mail server at home you can configure it to accept
mails from your mobile computer no matter where you are (with adequate
security such as SMTP over SASL), and then your mails can be forwarded to
your ISPs mail server.

You will manually have to add it to all your system menus - Evo still
lives where the original version lived - in /usr/bin - and the icon is
still in /usr/share/icons.

It's just that MDK varies their standard for setting up menus - so Evo
installs and upgrades (as well as others) don't necessarily get put into
the MDK menu system - but it does for other distros.

RedCarpet is going to be in the /usr/bin directory as well - as
/usr/bin/red-carpet.

You can also create a link in your menus and other places in the same
manner.

[newbie] Evolution update help

2003-01-12 Thread Russ
Hi All,

I kinda need some help here. This is what I did. I wanted to update
Evolution so I went to Ximian's site to do so. I the process of figuring
out how to do it I installed Red Carpet do do the task for me.

Red Carpet did not put an icon anywhere that I could find. It may have
snuck it in somewhere but I never found it. Anyway, I finally found it
and started it up. I was then able to update Evolution. However, now
there are no icons for it in my Kmenu. I was able to add a shortcut to
the icon bar some time back but now that won't even work.

I was finally able to run my updated Evolution by opening a console and
typing evolution.

I have a couple of questions here:
1. Where is Evolution now??
2. How do I add it back to my menu and icon bar (as well as Red
Carpet)??

Thanks

[newbie] EVOLUTION IMAP problem

2002-12-20 Thread Markus Bela
Hi,

I'm running the standard IMAP server supplied with MDK9 and
EVOLUTION clients. The problem is, that can't create
subdirectories on the server with EVOLUTION. Using MS
OUTLOOK/OUTLOOK EXPRESS appending the / char to the
directory name allows to create subdirs in it, but EVOLUTION
rejects such names.

Any advice? I have no experience with CYRUS IMAP server.
Does it behaves differently?

regards... Bela
