Ciao, ho problemi col comando kdvi (o, meglio, kshellview, da questo chiamato). Qunado tento di aprire un file .dvi scoppia (compare una finestrona che mi dice che l'applicazione ha dato segmentation fault). Ho Mandrake 7.2, kde 2.0. A qualcun altro e' successa la stessa cosa ? [newbie] Aurora is installed but does not run at startup?
I remember seeing this neat graphical display the first time I booted 7.2 but haven't seen it since. If this was Aurora and it shows as installed on my system(in KPackage) how do I get it to run automatically at bootup?

Hi, all After upgrading kernel to 2.4.2 on LM7.2 I got the following problem: Dialup doesn't work anymore Modem dials number without any problems, but after connection is established pppd daemon dieds saying that kernel doesn't support ppp or cann't load module, but I know for 100% that ppp support I include in kernel as module. btw, with LM8 I got same problem. [newbie] Midi problems
Hi everyone! I just installed Mandrake 7.2 and I find that i can`t play any midifiles. When I opened Kmidi I got message "dev/sequecer busy, maybe another program using it" or something similar. And when I tried to configure Kmidi it says "can`t get any information from dev/sequencer". Any ideas what to do? First things first again, thankyou all for responding so quickly. I have looked into trying your solutions posted in the past Sridhar, but still to no resault. I am not a very good writer but I will try to outline the things I've tried and the questions I have a little better. First of all having dealt with widows so long I'm used to dealing with the simplified language of the 9x environment. In 'netconf' when it asked for 'host + domain' I asumed that it meant 'csXX-a' + 'ssdt1.sk.wave.home.com'. Unfortunatly that didn't fit, so I placed 'csXX-a' by it's self and the 'ssdt1.sk.wave.home.com' I place in the primary domain under dns ip and stuff. Then I tried the 'dhcpcd -d -n -h hostname eth0', and this didn't change anything. 'ifconfig -a'listed no ip and no packets sent, and I was unable to ping even my 9x ip on the same hub. So, I removed linux and reinstalled 98 got networking up did a 'ipconfig /all' to get all the ip's for dns, my ip, gateway, even dhcp server. It was here that I saw the name 'csXX-a.ss.shawcable.net'. So I went back and manualy configured everything, and still no luck. then using 'csXX-a.ss.shawcable.net' I tried again to get 'dhcpcd -d -n -h hostname eth0' to work. Finally I reset up my networking manually using 'csXX-a.ss.shawcable.net'. Nothing seems to work, and I know it is recognizing my ethernet card. I'm lost and kinda confused. I know my ethernet card is a 10/100... could it be trying to run it at 100 only? The kernal being used is 'eepro100'. [newbie] Need Help with groff problem
I issued the following command to print a man page: man -t mkfs | lpr and got the following messages: /usr/bin/groff: can't find `DESC' file /usr/bin/groff:fatal error: invalid device `ps' Error executing formatting or display command. System command (cd /usr/share/man ; /usr/bin/bzip2 -c -d /usr/share/man/man1/man.1.bz2 | /usr/bin/gtbl | /usr/bin/groff -Tps -mandoc) exited with status 3. No manual entry for man lpr: stdin is empty, so no job has been sent. This occurs when I am root, usr or su. Also if I just type groff, I get the first two lines. Can someone tell me what I need to do to make it right? Thank you very much.

Aaron, I re-install Windows all the time. I currently boot Win98/Win2000/LM7.1. What I do is make sure I have a current Linux boot disk that WORKS. Then, after I do what I want with Windows I boot Linux with the floppy, and as root issue /sbin/lilo. This will write LILO to the MBR and you will be able to boot from the hard disk again. 1)Netscape in and of itself takes longer to open than one would normally expect from an application. I would guess it is in some part due to how bloated the program has become. I finally gave up on Netscape for this very reason and began using Opera, which opens almost instantly. 2)Some of the problem could also be due to whatever you have your home page set to. If it's a page that takes a long time to load in general (ie a portal site that dynamically constructs a page based on your user preferences, like "my.yahoo.com" or something), then this could slow Netscape from opening in a timely manner. Actually, Ebay is the way that I was first introduced to Mandrake. I got Mandrake 6.0 for like, six bucks. Worked great. In fact they accidently sent me two identical CDs so I was able to give one to a friend. Both were bootable CD's and I still have them today. HEEEPPP!! I am trying in vain to print from SO5.2, and feel I am slowly going mad. I have installe the printer when I installed Mandrake 7.2; the test-page prints, and I print wothout problem from KWord or KSpread. The printer as installed is listed in /etc/cups/printers.conf If I open http://localhost:631/ and go to the Manage Printer page, it tells me there are no printers installed. If I install one, it is listed in /etc/cups/printers.conf, but at the end of the configuration I still have no printer installed as far as the Manage Printers page is concerned. If I open Kups from the console, the status bar of Kups keeps telling me Cannot connect to CUPS server; check your options. If I add one, it is listed in /etc/cups/printers.conf, but at the end of the configuration I still have no printer installed as far as Kups is concerned.In the course of the installation, Kups repeatedly tells me I have no printer connected to // port #1 qtcups does not see any of the printers listed in /etc/cups/printers.conf xpp gives me short shrift, with the terse warning "No printer found, aborting" Only the Printer Configuration in DraxConf "sees" the installed printers, all the other config progs fail to see them. I have checked in the DraxConf startup services, and both cups and lpr are checked. Any ideas ? Hi folks, Im having trouble getting my SCSI card working on a new install of MD 7.2. For some reason, I am unable to get it to see the card. I have seen other posts showing the format I need to use to manually insert the card (aha152x=0x340,11,7,1 the defaults for this card), but I dont remember seeing which file or files I need to edit or is this done from a command line. [newbie] New CDRW installtion problem
I am trying to add a new HP9150 IDE CD-RW drive to my L-M 7.2 system. I have an existing CDROM (now the slave) and the new cd writer (now the master). I can read both drives as IDE CDROMs in Linux, and I can read and burn CD's in Windoze. I also have an Adaptec SCSI card and a small scsi drive that I use for swap. I know (I think) that I need to use ide-scsi to make the burner appear as a scsi device. And then to change the sym link for /mnt/cdrom to /dev/scd0. I also have added a lilo parameter hdc=ide-scsi I have read the help at http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hremov3.html as well as at http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html#toc2 If I follow the steps given in Mandrakeuser.org -- which basically say to change the sym link for 7.0 installations, it won't recognize the IDE drive as a scsi drive. If I follow the steps listed in the CD-Writing Howto, I don't have sr_mod.o module to complete the installation. Should I try and download this module? When I insmod ide-scsi the module loads without complaint. With both methods when I try cdrecord -scanbus I only see my SCSI swap drive. I'd appreciate any help you can offer. -- gvc

The problem is that I can't configure the dial-up because linux don't find my modem.It's is connected to COM1 (ttys0) serial port in my computer. I thought that linux usually finds the modem and then you have to configure the connection but my computer/mandrake don't find my modem. I hope you can help me. Thanks. Renaud, Only the Printer Configuration in DraxConf "sees" the installed printers, all the other config progs fail to see them. You'd said that you'd set a printer up, did you do so in DrakConf, or is that what you mean by DraxConf? I'd had trouble with this after the last (not the current cups update, as I've not installed it) cups update. I'd had to remove reinstall cups from the cd, then, after various attemtps, got it. [newbie] No Midi Sound
I am running Mandrake 7.2 on a new PC from ASL and can not hear any Midi output. The sound card is a Soundblaster Live! Value. ALSA is installed and seems to be working. I can play .wav files. RealPlayer works. Gnome desktop sounds work. Both Konqueror and KMid open Midi files and appear to play them, but there is no sound. All of the levels on Aumix are turned up. I can open the KMid Channel View and watch it play the piano keys, but there is no sound. Any suggestions? -- Doug Anderson

Well you can give it a try from the command line with insmod aha152x aha152x=0x340,11,7,1,1,0,500,0 this makes certain assumptions about the parameters that you are supplying of course. In particular the IRQ (11) and the port (340). If this works then you can modify /etc/mod.config in accordance with these requirements. If you have a PS/2 mouse it usesthe first serial port resources and take presidences to any devives actually connected to said port. Go back to basics... With your lan card you should have gotten a utility disk. On that disk are two important programs (assuming that you are using a 10base2/10baseT card). The first program sets up the hardware on the lan card. It allocates IRQ's/IO, etc and permits you to test the settings. Built into the same program or separate from it is another utility which permits you to set up once machine as a MASTER and the other as a SLAVE for testing purposes. Hopefully both lan cards are identical. Connect everything up. Boot up from a dos disk and use the LAN CARD's utility disk. Check the settings for conflicts. There is a self test in there too. Run it and make sure it passes. Make sure that both cards are set to 10base2, NOT 10BaseT. Finally use the Diagnostic utility to send packets back and forth from the two machines. Does this work? If not you have a hardware problem. [newbie] Ip MASQ
I was setting up IP MASQ so that my internal network can access the internet. I found information at the linux howto documentation. Basically my problem was that it told me to add lines for a firewall to the files /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall which i did. Then it told me to add a line to /etc/rc.d/rc.local so that it runs the firewall. My understanding is that if I type /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall it would run, however it give me the error I cant remember what it is but i believe it basically meant the it could not run the file because the file it self was not runnable. I type chmod 700 /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall like it said in the howto but i still cant run it. Can anyone tell me why?

I have an Intel pro 100+ Network card (that's what windows idents it as) and since I upgraded my mobo from an asus p5ab to a p3b-f I can't get it to work in linux at all. everything APPEARS to work fine however. it is apparently detected and it USED to work... I even did a complete reinstall of linux mandrake 7.2 and no go. The first number is write-speed (cd-r), the second is rewrite-speed (cd-rw), the third is read speed. 1x is the "normal" cd-speed, which is about 300 kps, or 74 min to burn 74 min of music/650 mb data. Mulitply the speed by those numbers. Ie. 4x4x6 means 1200 kps for both writing modes, which means about 18 min to burn a full cd. Reading would be at 1800 kps. Keep in mind that your system must be able to feed the writer with data at that speed (normally not a problem, but stranger things have happened), unless it has burn-proof technology (pause writing on buffer underruns). After configuring this printer several times I cannot get it to print. When I try to set it up in linuxconf it complains about a wrong printcap file. If I try to print a test page nothing happens. Robert, Unless you REALLY want to use Sendmail, you will have to uninstall postfix first. then you will have to reinstall all the sendmail packages that are on your install CD's. If you don't want to go to all that trouble though you can just as easily use Pine and Postfix. To check your system for postfix, or for that matter Sendmail or any other package just use this on the command line to search the system for the packages that are loaded. rpm -qa | grep packagename Example: "to check for sendmail" rpm -qa | grep Sendmail ENTER On my system the command returns this to the screen: [root@mdw1982 office]# rpm -qa | grep sendmail sendmail-8.9.3-20 Give it a try and let us know what you get. Other then that all that is necessary for you to utilize the already installed SMTP on your system is to leave that part "undefined" in the Pine preferences and it will use Postfix/Sendmail by default. Thanks for your help. Kevin I don't know about the usb support on 7.2, your chances may be better on the next release 8.0. With that said, from what I have seen and my setups I went with two internals since I could get two for less than a usb or serial external at the time. Here is the thing, data transfer on usb is supposed to be high speed, but a cdrw can only handle so fast a speed as the buffers and read will allow. When a cdrw is designated a 4x4x6 for example: 4x write and 4x rewrite and 6x read with the x standing for the speed = to 4 times 150kbs or 600kbs of data transfer for a maximum. So you see the usb is capable of the data transfers of most any cdrw but it is the cdrw speed that governs the process. The other factor to consider is the buffer mem of the cdrw the higher the number the less chance of getting a bad burn.due to what is called buffer overrun. You now know everything that I know about cdrw's. Hope this helped or at least did not hurt. If anyone out there sees an error in my discourse please jump in here and correct me. [newbie] Cups 1.1.6 conflicts
I started the Mandrake update to get the new cups packages and couldn't get the job done. I got "cups conflicts with printpro-4.1.2-1 and openssl-devel is needed by cups-devel . and ghostscript 55.50-33mdk is needed by cups" or close to those words. So does anyone know what the conflict problem is with printpro? I can get the other two packages from rpmfind.net although that may present a whole new set of dependencies. I looked through the archives and found a good deal, but nothing releating to my specific problem. After installing pronto I get "Can't locate MIME/Types.pm in @INC" when trying to run it. And it lists various directories, none of which have Types.pm. There a several Types.pm on my machine, however none are in the directory MIME. Could anyone help me with this? the issue is in the netconf setting I expect. With a static IP and access throgh a nic/modem setup... ppoe is not needed. Set it up as a standard network. Robert, Fetchmail is also already loaded on your system. The first thing you want to do is to run Pine for the first time. This will get the dir in /var/spool/mail ready to accept messages for you. It will also give Pine a chance to get setup for running. The next thing you will want to do is make sure all the settings in Pine are as you want them to me. As I mentioned to you in the previous message the preference in Pine where it wants to know the name of the smtp-server you can leave that blank and Pine will by default use the systems SMTP whether you have Postfix or Sendmail running. If you already have the host name configured then you can enter that in there. Ex: machinename.host.com In my case, and I'm using Sendmail/fetchmail/procmail to do the mail sending and receiving my SMTP-SERVER is mdw1982.dyndns.org machine name = mdw1982 domain = dyndns.org Otherwise just leave it blank and everything will work just fine. To use Fetchmail to bring the mail down from your ISP you can do one of a few ways. The simplest way to do this is to issue the command in a terminal window like this; fetchmail mail.charter.net ENTER When it asks you for a password you type in the password you authenticate yourself to your ISP with when you log into the mail server to collect your email. If your Linux system username differs from the one that is your user name with your ISP, which in this case is "wormie", then your sendmail command would look something like this; fetchmail -u wormie mail.charter.net If this is the case then you're going to have to set up an alias on your system so that when ever fetchmail gets the mail from your ISP for "wormie" it will no "who's" /var/spool/mail/$USER dir to deposit the mail into. If you find that you do have to setup an alias let me know and we can go over that at the time. Once you're sure that everything is working correctly you can setup fetchmail to collect the mail on a more permanent basis using fetchmailconf. That will help you configure a .fetchmailrc file that everytime you connect to the internet it will automatically connect to your ISP's mailserver and download the mail for you. You can run fetchmail as a daemon in the background by typing fetchmail -d 150 -u wormie mail.charter.net This will check the mail server every 3 minutes for new messages. [newbie] poor graphical display
I have recently installed Mandrake 7.2 - all went very well, including detection of an ethernet card other distributions couldn't. Display is quite poor. I have entered all the correct monitor settings. Other distributions work well with my monitor and these settings. I have experimented with different settings etc. but the display is consistantly bad. The picture is offset to the right -- there are dotted lines running down the screen -- the picture is not sharp. Here are my specs: Monitor: MegaImage (14") Chipset: SIS 620 Pentium 400 celeron 64 megs shared memory (2 reserved for video) Any thoughts would be appreciated Richard

[newbie] Cups 1.1.6 Conflicts and HP612
I'm replying to Bill about his HP612 printer, and to the post about the CUPS 1.1.6 conflicts. Bill,...the reason your HP printer isn't working is because you've got "printpro" installed. Log in as root, open a terminal, fire up kpackage, and manually remove any and all printopro entries. Then using either kpackage or the Mandrake update, update "ghostscript", then get cups, cups=common, and cups-drivers. Install them in the correct order (what other way is there?) and check in DrakConf for the section called "Startup Services". You should find a new entry called "cups-lpd" . Click the button to have it start on boot-up, and just for the fun of it ( a trip down memory lane ! ) , reboot your PC. Go into DrakConf, open up "Printer Configuration", delete any printers you may already have in there, and re-install your 612. It will probably detect it automatically, but if not, try any HP printers with a 600 series model number, the lower the number the better. Now, Dennis, your already on the right track. Follow the instructions your getting and delete your previous versions of cups. If another package needs one of your cups packages make a not of the package, delete it, and re-install it after you've finished with cups. Next, you have no choice but to install a new copy of ghostscript. If the new version of cups wants a newer version of ghostscript, then get it, and install it. Otherwise, stay with the one you have. A word of advice here. Any package with the text "devel" in the name, is an add-on which is only required if you want to write programs for the main package it refers to. Therefore, if you wanted to write a new printer-driver for "cups", you would need cups-devel", and ONLY then. If your not a "Code-Warrior" (see programmer), then those nasty "devel" packages are just taking up room on your hard drive for nothing. One more thing,...use "kpackage" to do all of the installing and un-installing. Log-in as root to use kpackage. Go to "www.rpmfind.net" to download the "rpm" packages you need, and then install them in the proper sequence. You'll be needing ghostscript, cups, cups-common, and cups-drivers. Ok first about your CD rom. if you are using linix Mandrake 7.2 you should have Drake config installed. At least I do but I not running linux4Windows. Run drake config (go into) - "linix config - system configutartion" - file systems - access local drive. From there you should be able to mount and unmount your CD ROM. I have installed Linux 7.2 (stand alone I dont know anything about this lnx4win) and have no problem with this CD rom bizzo as I belive supermount mounts and unmounts it for me. As for the debugger I have never heard of ddd (typeo?). there is a gdb debugger though and I will tell you the probelm I am currently stuck on. Linux Mandrake dost not have the debug symbols in there libraries/kernal ??? (I'm not sure which) by default. so you cant use a debugger until you recomplile some part of it. [newbie] Madrake 8.0 Beta and bootloader
Has anyone had problems with their 8.0 installation and seting up the bootloader? I can't seem to get there. It always fails on me!The rest of the install goes flawlessly, but of course I can get it to boot. I'm running a dual-boot (Win Me and Mandrake 8.0 Beta) on my test PC, and I haven't been able to finish the install because the install stops when I can't install LILO or GRUB. [newbie] i need help with installation
I have Mandrake 7.2 and RedHat 7.0When I try to install Mandrake it keeps on telling me "do you have any scsi devices?"When I say "no" it just ignores it and keeps on telling me "yes or no". But when I click yes it's unable to find the drivers for it.So i'm stuck at this level of installation.I think that's because linux doesn't support ata/100.

Bill,...the reason your HP printer isn't working is because you've got "printpro" installed. Log in as root, open a terminal, fire up kpackage, and manually remove any and all printopro entries. Then using either kpackage or the Mandrake update, update "ghostscript", then get cups, cups=common, and cups-drivers. Install them in the correct order (what other way is there?) and check in DrakConf for the section called "Startup Services". You should find a new entry called "cups-lpd" . Click the button to have it start on boot-up, and just for the fun of it ( a trip down memory lane ! ) , reboot your PC. Go into DrakConf, open up "Printer Configuration", delete any printers you may already have in there, and re-install your 612. It will probably detect it automatically, but if not, try any HP printers with a 600 series model number, the lower the number the better. Thanks for the response Dan. Logged in as root/ started kpackage/ searched for printpro in installed pkgs and found nothing. Searched also using print pro. Searched thru ALL packages the same way. Nothing. In console mode as root "which printpro" produced nothing. Searched for ghostscript in INSTALLED and found it there. Also found cups, cups=common and cups-drivers aleady installed. Also a qtcups. ok, ata 100 is an ide based solution. Not SCSI 2 ata 100 can be turned off in the bios, reducing the system to a more normal ata 33 which is supported. Open netconf - Host name and IP network devices - Adaptor 1. Check "Enabled" and "Dhcp". For Net device put "eth0" and for the kernel module put "eepro100". Accept all of these and reboot just to be sure. Now run "/sbin/dhcpcd -d -n -h COxxx-A eth0" - you should be able to connect to @Home. Finally I reset up my networking manually using 'csXX-a.ss.shawcable.net'. Nothing seems to work, and I know it is recognizing my ethernet card. I'm lost and kinda confused. I know my ethernet card is a 10/100... could it be trying to run it at 100 only? The kernal being used is 'eepro100'.
