Charles,

Your ignorance makes me sick.

FYI, I come from a country which suffered in a very filthy war in 90-s,
Several percents of the population were killed, and ca 20-30% of the
people were forced to flee their homes (most never returned). In
fact, war has been so bad that no one has the guts to do a population
census yet.

Family of my wife has been terorised for years, their possesions were
taken away, they were denied right to work (and thus earn a living), and
only providence saved her father from death - simply because they refused
to go away from a town where they were born and lived all their life.
The rest of her family is today either dispersed all over the world (only
her parents stayed where they were), or dead.
My family was luckier (they lived on a right place for our nationality):
they had to go trough a period of dispair and luck of money, but none of
them was physically in danger except for my oncel.

Still, I never insisted on discussing that in a linux mailing list ,
simply because this is not appropriate place to do it.

Mandrakesoft mailing lists are to an extent open for non-related
discussions, but at the moment when people start complaining about
never-ending discussions which aren't related to linux I'm required to
put an end to it.

FYI, I'll take a look at the list tomorrow, and blacklist everyone who is
still talking about politics there. You are still welcome to discuss what
happened in one of these threads:

Hi, Folks

Sorry for bothering You, but this is kind of important:

As You probably know, Mandrakesoft has reccently started testing two new
sites:

mandrakeexpert.com (e-support) and mandrakecampus.com (e-learning)

As I said, we are still testing them, and we need Your feedback in order
to improve them. I wan't bother you with details on this list, but please
take a look at the sites, and post your impressions here:

http://forum.mandrakesoft.com/article.php3?sid=20010209120851

In addition, please take some more time and fill this survey:

http://testforum.mandrakesoft.com/survey.php?sid=4

thx!

PS: if you use Netscape, "testforum" will appear in huge letters. Just
set up your preferences for UNICODE encoding to "helvetica 12 pt", and
the site will look much better. This appears to be a bug in netscape: if
you know of some workaround, please tell me.

Re: [newbie] Release date for 7.2

:~Have a good look at
:~http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php3?sid=2928103525mode=flat.
:~This was written by Deno (a Mandrakesoft employee) on Thursday September 28. In
:~this he writes, "we have to finish our ISO-images by the end of next week". So
:~LM 7.2 could be out any time now.

FYI: It still isn't out.

:~One interesting point though. If you read the article, you will see that 7.2
:~will contain a *beta* of KDE2. There will be a version 7.21 after KDE2 is
:~officially released (currently October 16), so it may be better to wait a few
:~extra weeks.

Please don't mistake what I say with official announcements. One is sure
now: 7.2 will NOT contain beta of KDE2, because we have RC1 of KDE2 in it
for several days already. We'll see for the rest.

Hint: what I was talking about in the forum is not something Mandrakesoft
is eager to do - our goal is to produce a nicely-working distro, not put
something with lot of known bugs out.

Why don't we just wait for a few more days and see both the KDE2-final and
7.2 final: comparing what we ship with what KDE-team will ship as
"official" will be very simple (using diff, and/or testing both on a
running system), THEN we can talk about how good (or bad) have we made a
job...

OK, folks - here are the facts:

1) Linuxcare is/was not bad, they generally did the job very well, but we
had problems in certain cases where feedback simply did not work, so small
problems ended up with very unhappy customers.

2) we just took this over from linuxcare few days ago, and
we do have problems. As a matter of fact, we screwed it full-time last
week, but by now things should be back in normal (I HOPE!) now.

If you think that running our support is a simple task, it is not, but we
are determined to get it right this time, and I don't see why we shouldn't
succeed: we got our security-updates right, 7.2 is full of goodies
you have been asking for, overal quality of the product is improving too,
so why shouldn't we be able to handle support as well?

But i repeat the warning: "taking over" is a big task, and there may be
some more troubles ahead of us (yup, we just passed on e big hump last
week!), so please don't get too pissed-off.

We do what we can, i.e.:

- impossible is done at once
- wonders take some more time.

Hi, tallD

You are on a wrong adress... Still, try the following thing:

:~I guess I must be one of a small minority who cannot get version 7.1 Deluxe
:~to install on his/her PC. I have made three thorough attempts and all goes
:~well until the final step where the X configuration test is done.

- ignore this and let the PC reboot without X, then log-in as root and run

a technical support, it is a mailing-list for mandrake-linux users)

HardDrake 0.9.3 released
(http://forum.mandrakesoft.com/article.php3?sid=2901094425)

Here is what our hardware-guru has to tell you:

Alex writes "Mainly a bug-fix release, a boot option configuration box has been
added. Improved boot mode. ISDNsn webcams and bridges are now handled.

GNOME support is not included in RPMS but available in sources. "

So, if you have ISDN-card, webcam or bridge, rush for latest Cooker rpm-s and
give it a try. Also, if you have experienced problems with
hardware-configuration in the past, give it a try and report what you saw. This
is allready 3-rd release of Harddrake announced here, and it is likely to
detect/configure much more than the version you will find on 7.1 CD-s!

In case You still do not know what is harddrake, please read the What is
Harddrake?article.

:~I wasn't aware that there was a way to make that happen without using

You can use IMAP server with pine:

But since pine has a nice configuration editor (press: M S C to get

I think Paul is right. I did not find anything similar in pine conf. file,

:~I doubt that he used a feature INSIDE Pine. If he did, it is something

:~echo
:~echo- Linus Pauling -
:~# End of bla's
:~
:~(Give or take a few bla's)

:~From: bascule [EMAIL PROTECTED]
:~Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
:~To: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
:~Subject: [newbie] courtesy implied in this list?

was a bit too long for me, but I will try to explain why one should
publicly thank for a solution of his problem, and how.

[WHY?]
--
There are two reasons for "thx it solved my problem" messages:

1) Feels good for one who solved the problem.
2) Makes searching the list-archive easier

[HOW?]
--
If you want to be really usefull member of our little family, try
to formulate these "thx a lot" messages in the way I formulated this
message:

1) Change subject line from "Cannot mount CD" into
"Cannot mount CD (SOLUTION)"

2) Start the mail with "Hi, Steve" (or whoverer it was who solved
your problem), followed by: Your solution to my "Cannot mount CD" problem
worked perfectly.

3)Include headers of Steve-s e-mail, so that the one who searches later
has all the info about the mail you are refering to.

4) Give a SHORT summary of what the problem was, and what was a solution.

[RESUME]
-
Thus, when someone else searches the archive for "cannot mount CD", he
will find an e-mail with "SOLVED" in subject. Your short description
should be enough to make it clear if his problem is the same as yours was,
and name+email of the one who proposed the solution serves as a reference
to Steve-s e-mail with solution.

Re: [newbie] Disconnect when on holiday!

:~Hey, folks - when you go on holiday how about switching off your

:~approaches (at least here in the UK and in the northern
:~hemisphere) I can forsee lots of automated replies being
:~circulated if we don't help each other in this way.

Use .procmail for your auto-repliers. Here is my receipt:

# autoreply
:0 Whc: autoreply.lock
 * !^FROM_DAEMON
 * !^X-Loop: .*\@havlik.org
 * !^X-Loop: .*\@mandrakesoft.com
 * !^Precedence: list

:0 ehc # if the name was not in the cache
| (formail -rA"Precedence: junk" \
-A"X-Loop: [EMAIL PROTECTED]" ; \
cat ~/.plan \
  ) | $SENDMAIL -oi -t

This part:

* !^Precedence: list

ensures that i do not send auto-replies to lists, and

  | formail -rD 32768 vacation.cache
:0 ehc # if the name was not in the cache

Makes sure you get my message only once (until the cache is
filled.). Normally, you would not use so large cache, but I receive a HUGE
load of messages. "~/.plan" is a file containing my message.

It is still a good idea to filter lists before this rule (saves time). For
instance:

# Mandrake mailing lists
:0:
* Precedence: list
* X-Loop:.*\/\[a-z\-]+\@linux\-mandrake.com
{
  LIST = $MATCH
  :0:
  * LIST ?? ()\/[a-z\-]+
  {
LIST = $MATCH
:0 c:
* LIST ?? fun
* BH ?? \(sound)\
! [EMAIL PROTECTED]
:0:
mail/Mandrake/$LIST
   }
}

sorts all mandrake mailing lists to their own folders, so that I can read
post directed to me first, and lists when I have time to do it.

cheers

[newbie] DISCUSION Upgrade

2000-06-05 Per discussione Denis HAVLIK

What do you expect from upgrade?

cu
Denis
--
One topic from a dark side .-)

Upgrading a Linux-Mandrake system has been our nightmare for quite some
time. François has worked a lot on this for 7.1, and at the end I was
actually able to upgrade from RH 6.0 system, and end up with a fully
functional Mandrake 7.1 system. Rpm database got quite "poluted", and we
ahve to do some dirty hacks for Qt, but at least one gets a working
system, which is a good start.

Big question is: What should an upgrade actually do?

Below are some answers I could think of:

1) CONSERVATIVE: just freshen those packages which can be freshened and
leave the rest of the system as it is

2) FORCED: Force instalation of a new "core" system, even if this
means downgroading, or breaks some functionality of the already installed
system, then go on with freshening the rest of the packages.

3) REPAIR: Like conservative, but try to repair existing packages too,
If we find out that some of the files are missing, or that someone fooled
with binaries, reinstall the package (even if it means downgrading!)

4) FORCED REPAIR: like 3, but make sure that "core" system is installed in
the end, like in 2

5) VANDAL: force install of the core, and upgrade of those packages we
provide. The rest can go to hell. ;-

6) SUPER-VANDAL: like 5, but i make sure that all packages older than one
year are removed from the system. (ups, I just found another variable for
sorting packages!)
...

All of the above mentioned can (must) also be combined with possibility to
add new non-core packages during upgrade, and maybe even to remove some of
the currently installed packages in "custom" and "expert" mode.

I am quite sure there are other ways to do upgrade, and that opinions on
"what is the best upgrade" will be wildly different. So, what do you
think?

Problem with aureal sound card is similar to problem with some winmodems -
linux driver does exist, but it is binary-only. This means that if it

Re: [newbie] Journalized FS for LM 7.1 (ReiserFS)?

2000-06-04 Per discussione Denis HAVLIK

ReiserFS promises a lot, but we will only know how good it REALLY is after
6 months or so... As for the "migration tool, it is called second disk ;-

That is, you can format a new partition as raiserFS, move all your data
there and that's it. You just need a lot of free space on a disk.

:~I've been reading that LM 7.1 will run on the ReiserFS - a journalized file
:~system! Does this finally mean no more fear of a messed up file system from
:~improper shutdowns after power failures and such? Does this mean the power
:~of Linux has finally been combined with the safety net of BeOS? If so, I
:~think Bill has a lot more to worry about
:~
:~I think, with some craftsmanship, backups and other things, it is possible
:~already to implement the ReiserFS on MDK 7x also. What I heard though, is
:~that this includes a complete reformatting and setting up of your system
:~again (but again, this is hearsay).
:~
:~If MDK7.1 indeed comes out with this FS, it would be nice to have a
:~migration tool for it to maintain existing system setup.

Re: McMillan monopoly [was [newbie] ATTN: ALAN S.]

2000-06-03 Per discussione Denis HAVLIK

:~Just checking - have I got this right? Macmillan have exclusive
:~rights?

Exclusive rights to Power Packs and similar. GPL-CD-s ala cheapbytes are
just as free as they used to be. OK, maybe i underestimated the amount of
negative energy in the word "monopoly", I will have to explain this
better.

[disclaimer]
I am writing this out-of-the-head, so maybe some facts are wrong, but
since we actually have a McMillan employee at this list, he will correct
me if I got something wrong. .-) I am also in no means authorised to write
this, but I hope noone will mind.

[past]
In the past, US customers were often confused by having to choose two very
similar packages with MandrakeLinux inside. The worse of all war the gaf
with McMillan-s 6.5 package: If you bought Mandrake 6.1 pack, followed
with McMillans 6.5 "upgrade" you were quite pissed off, right? Well, this
is going to change now. On the other hand, McMillan was extremely
successful in selling our distro, which is something we really liked, for
obvious reasons.

[fact in short]

We have a very good partnership with McMillan, but there were some
problems, so we went and made a new deal with them.

[new deal]

1) McMillan has exclusive rights to distribute MandrakeLinux in USA and
other english-speaking countries.
2) McMillan does not mix in non-english speaking countries
3) McMillan does not sell any other distros
4) All "McMillan" packages will clearly state that they have
"Mandrakesoft" product inside.
5) Package numbering is the same for McMillan and non-McMillan
packages.

Probably i forgot something, but these are the most interesting points, I
suppose. As you can see, this deal is far from beeing one-sided - from my
perspective it sounds like a win-win situation, and if both sides show
good will to solve any future problems in a "fair" way, it may end up as
extremely good deal for both sides. Do not think about it as about
"McMillans monopoly", think about it as about "Mandrake has outsorced
sales to a company which has means to push them very hard.", and you will
understand what I think.

1) change partition type, format it (diskdrake)

3) move the data from some existing partition there (/home/ sounds fine,
but your mileage may vary)
4) remove old /home, edit /etc/fstab so that your new partition gets
mounted on right place and either reboot or just remount the partition to
where it should be.

Re: [newbie] DISCUSSION Authomatic Install

:~ 3) What about the three checkboxes?
:~
:~Any particular reason for these 3 specific types of software? Did they cause
:~more discussion/trouble?

These three are just a proposal. I thought that even complete newbie must
have some particular whishes which we should let him express, no matter
how simple this particular install class may be.

1) "Games" popped up as one example in my mind. because it is a huge group
of packages especially if you have Power Pack, and not everyone really
wants them, but those who do really do. .-)

2) Server: because we do not want to include these on default (dangerous),
yet I could imagine that having a quickdirty way of installing a server
may be fine for some people: move the slider to "minimal install", click
on "server apps", let go. Configure server apps in post-install and voila,
a new server!

3) Disabled: This is new. I was asked by a blind guy if we could include
some programs for blind and for people who have problems with hands. This
chategory does not exist yet, but if we introduce it, it will do several
"inteligent" things at once:

1) change the way programs are choosen. Obvious things to do would be
lowering priority of all the fancy grafical stuff and highering the
priority of easy to use programs. Probably also highering the priority of
"sound" with respect to "view", too.
2) install additional programs which are ONLY usefull to blind people,
like progs which can do something with braile terminals.

Obviously, if a blind man has to do install by himself, you want to keep
things as simple as possible for him, right(*)? I mean, you do not want to
hide this option somewhere in the middle of expert install. So, add a
checkbutton to "Authomatic" install and be done with it.

I repeat - at the moment, this option exists only in my head, but our
general opinion here is "well, if we can help them withouth having to
change too much, why not?"
-

If anyone can think of other checkbuttons which would be better than
these, no problem, but keep in mind:

- Only a few buttons
- Simple terms so that everyone can understand them
- default is "no"
- Should be something what is REALLY important to one class of people,
while considered complete junk by others.
- things like "software for tv cards" are going to be installed
authomatically if we can recognise the card - no checkboxes needed.

cu
Denis

(*) Blind people are not stupid, but they cannot see, and the install IS
visually oriented. I suppose they do not apreciate things like trees,
pop-up menues and color-coding at all. Things like "click here" (ooops,
where is here?), "upper left side", "red button" and all other
visually-oriented stuff do not make any sense if you are blind (unless
you have a braille terminal, in which case left-right etc. do make sense.)

[newbie] DISCUSSION Authomatic Install

2000-05-30 Per discussione Denis HAVLIK

Hi, folks

Here is one question concerning "Authomated" mode. Currently (7.1), in
this mode you get "everything" except for "dangerous" server-packages
installed, if there is enough place on your HD.

From your recent posts, I got the impression that having a following
screen pop-up during Authomated install would make lot of people happy:

+++
##

Choose the number of installed packages X (Y MB)

  | ## - This is a slider |
  | ## |

   MINIMAL "EVERYTHING"
   INSTALL

[ ] Games
[ ] Server applications
[ ] Handicaped user

##
HELP TEXT: Authomatic install will on default provide you with a
standard workstation. By moving the slider, you can choose the amount
of software you want to install on your system: Even if you choose a
minimal version, you will get a simple, but still rather confortable
working enviroment. "Everything" installes everything, except for games
and server aplications, unless corresponding checkboxes are checked.
"handicaped user" installs some hanidicaped-friendly programs, and lowers
the priority of wiz-biz graphical programs.

Real gamers should obviously check "Games", And checking "Server
application" would fire a warning "This can be dangerous, bla, bla...

Now the questions are:

1) Is this soemthing you wold like to have, that is - would any of you
actually make use of authomated install with this option.
2) Is this option clear enough?
3) What about the three checkboxes?

Hey list.

:~I have been thinking about, if it is possible to sort/split the list in
:~some way. Reason:
:~My mother-language is not english, so it is rather time-consuming for me
:~to read-trough all the mails in this list - and there are many, with the
:~result, that I am forced to run fast trough the mails, only reading the
:~subject - and if not of interest - delete. But - sometimes it happens
:~that I havent been on the net for a couple of days, resulting in more
:~than 100 mails waiting - I then often deletes to many, and thats is
:~anoying when you finds out that a number in the tread is missing.
:~I would suggest som main groups like 'networking' 'mailprograms'
:~'multimedia' 'the Mandrake 7.1 - issue'
:~Just a proposal

Re: [newbie] HP Deskjet 950C

The best documentation on printers linux is available here:

http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi

:~Hi,
:~
:~I figured I may as well ask again - I'm using a HP Deskjet 950C - just
:~about every other Deskjet model number is available in LM7.1 beta3, but
:~not this one, I searched for a driver thru Freshmeat, the HP
:~site, and a few other places, but don't see any mention of this model. I
:~tried a few of the
:~other HP drivers in the installation, but no good - print comes out all
:~garbled, and just a
:~few lines per page. Does anyone have this working, and if so, could you
:~point out where you
:~found the driver, or how you set it up ? Or, does anyone know if this
:~model won't work under Linux ?
:~
:~Thanks,
:~philomena

Re: [newbie] upgrading questions

:~Paul,
:~Does this mean I can go ahead and install the 3 cd's I got with the cheapo
:~version of "7.0 complete" without worrying that I will "degrade" my current
:~7.02

Should work OK.

:~install. And does it mean that I can just throw any distro over mandrake
:~and pick and choose as to what I feel are the best of each, rolling it into
:~my own custom version?

If you really want to make your life miserable. .-)
Our upgrade is far from perfect, but I am afraid other distros may be even
worse.

:~
:~You writ:
:~My Linux setup is a long history of upgrades. Started with RedHat 5.0,
:~went to RedHat 6.0, dumped Mandrake 6.1 over that, and now I upped it to
:~Mandrake 7.02. All the programs that are not on the distribution CD keep
:~working correctly, I have not had any problem with anything yet.
:~Also setting up the drivers for my AGP videocard (Diamond Speedstar) and
:~the settings in XF86Config were left alone.

Pre-ordering does not mean much, does it? Soon you will be able to buy 7.1
all over the place. BTW, McMillan now has exclusive rights on all
english-speaking countries, so there will be no separate "Mandrake" and
McMillan" products to confuse you anymore AFAIK.

:~What do the people at MandrakeSoft or MacMillan suggest?

:~dear mandrake,
:~
:~i read in pc plus magazine (#165-july 2000) here in the uk that;
:~'analysts at wall street's JP Morgan have said that it's inevitable that
:~linux will break up into a series of totally incompatible versions'.
:~
:~i wonder if mandrake see this as a possibility, if so do you see this as
:~a bad thing as i know i do, and what input/influence do you have on the
:~issue of compatibility.
:~

This is my PERSONAL view of things
---

1) Look and feel of distros will differ a lot.
2) Tools used to acomplish administrative jobs may differ too, although
some convergence may take place. In particular, some companies will choose
to use propriatery tools for administrative tasks, like SuSe already does.
3) Filesystem layout and libraries will be standardised enough to enable
you to run any "linux" program on any "linux" distribution withouth
problems, although there may be big problems in front of us with different
packaging systems (there are now, think rpm-deb, then different ways
of dealing with rpm used by us redhat on one and SuSe on other side...).

(I hope someone will come with much better packaging tool, which will
accept both rpm- and deb- packages for historical reasons and
make an end to this nonsense...)

:~Hi Denis, I'm writing for a buddie of mine, he is having
:~trouble getting though to the newbie list, I think
:~his e mail address changed, and something might be boogered up.

As far as the list is concerned, everything looks regular

mandrakesoft:~/lists/newbie$ grep kit\@ subscribers
email [EMAIL PROTECTED]
gecos [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And from his mail it sounds as if he is able to send mails sometimes, and
sometimes not - this has nothing to do with mailing list - problem must be
somewhere else, but I have no idea what it is. (Our mail server COULD
be a problem, new server will be in place after the discussion period is
finished - noone has time for it now). Sorry :-(

Noone claims our docus are perfect. Otherwise we would stop working on
them .-) Seriously:

1) yes, there is a lot of place for improvements
2) we are working on it

It is similar to all the rest of the stuff in the linux world: Started
small and crappy, improved over the time, and one day it will reach the
divine state of beeing perfect. Like TeX.
