Well, that sounds suspiciously like they didn't want Mandrake to begin with and let you install it as an experiment, and they were just looking for an excuse to make you take it off. I can't think of what settings office personnel should need easy access to if the machines are set up properly to begin with, and for those I can think of, if you know where to go, it is easy, but maybe not familiar, so perhaps training and expectations was the falldown here, not ease of use. More important to me would be direct newbies to always use Mandrake rpms, src.rpms included, to procure wanted apps or dependencies. More over to disdain corrupting their systems with anything 3rd party (includin drivers an apps, rpms or tarballs). Build as user all you want, but if you install closed source binary only taints on it, the precaution to only build rpms (or tarballs for that matter) as user is sort'a moot, borderin on ridiculous. Well, my philosophy is to inform people of the potential risks and let them make their own decisions. So instead of saying go ahead, do this, it works for me, I prefer to say these are the two ways of doing it and there are potential pitfalls of doing it one of those ways. Kinda wanted to get away from aRts since I don't run KDE. Running Fluxbox actually, and I was using Juk, tho' now being a convert to amarok, it reminds me of Musicmatch .. on the other OS. They did a nice job on it, I like the cover manager, nice work ;) Never had that before .. amaroK is written to integrate with the KDE environment, but lots of people run it on flux, xfce or even gnome. it requires libqt3 and kdelibs, but that's pretty much it. The guys that developed it have created a really cool app that IMHO runs rings around anything else that currently exists. Have you used it to rip cd's or do you use Grip for that ? amaroK is not capable of ripping ATM, and quite frankly, I have not found anything else to be Grip's equal for the job it does. I am a big fan of do one thing and do it really well apps. I really hate the tendency a lot of apps are starting to adopt to try and do everything. However, AMD CPU's are notorious for running even hotter that Intel P4's. Your problem could simply be that the temp shutdown settings are too low. Try changing the settings in your BIOS - you can access it when booting the laptop. You should see a notice on the screen which tells you which key to press for BIOS access. Have a look at anything related to CPU Temp, Thermal Shutdown or CPU fan monitoring to see if there's a setting you can adjust. Be careful though! Turning off or changing the settings might cause the system to overheat and cause permanent damage! If you need to replace the cooling fan(s), you will have to order the correct fans from HP, assuming that they'll even ship them to you at all. HTH. I don't know about your laptop, but I know the fan can be software controlled on some laptops. For that matter, I used to have a utility to control the fan on my old Toshiba 400CDT under Linux, and it didn't suport acpi. Amarok is preferred by others for all the bells and whistles. I haven't used them, but under Gnome there's Rhythmbox and Beep(?). And of course, there's the venerable XMMS. amaroK is my personal favorite, and if you like musicmatch, I think one of the more recent versions of amaroK would suit you. [newbie] amaroK 1.2-beta4
Some of you following amaroK development may have noticed that 1.2-beta4 is out. I have built packages for 10.1 and have uploaded them to the usual place and they should install cleanly over my beta3 packages. There have been no updates to taglib or any of the other libraries that needed to be updated on 10.1, so the beta4 package should be all you need. If you don't have amaroK beta installed yet, I highly recommend you try it, it is an awesome new audio player for linux. All the updates you need are in the same directory as the amaroK packages. Once again, there is a package that includes mysql support. More info here http://amarok.kde.org packages are here http://www.gkmweb.com/amarok/10.1 For anybody still using 10.0, I am having lots of trouble with my chroot build environment for 10.0, so I don't have beta4 packages, but I hope to get the time to fix it and get them up later this week but no promises. CVS stands for Concurrent Versioning System and is a software system used by software developer's to manage their source files, in this case, the alsa project stores their files in cvs, and you can check them out and use them. cvs is itself a piece of software though, so you can see how I might be confused. Why would a sound driver need cvs to install. What you need is to check out the cvs version of alsa. I was intrigued by your 'open to change' comment - most criticisms I've heard is that people are used to Windows want to stick with that - here there is no change involved. I read this that his landlady was using windows, mostly because of two things he says. slow because of adware/virus tools, and reference to windows connecting to wireless nics. I am wanting to stream internet radio, but my preferred site on w*nXP (http://launch.yahoo.com/launchcast) will not work with Firefox (will not support Netscape error). What alternatives are there that work with Firefox/Linux? I guess this will be handy for my w*XP box, too, as I'd prefer not to use Internet Exploiter. Why don't you look into streamtuner. Is anybody else on this list getting bombarded with virus laden e-mail from a particular ip address in Australia? Whoever it is is sending to the address that I use for the Mandrake lists, so I am thinking it may be one of our newbie windows users. For anybody that enjoyed the packages I made for the Amarok 1.2 beta1 release, beta 2 is out, and I have made packages for 10.0 and 10.1. These required an update to taglib 1.3.1 which you'll need to grab too. There is a package with and a package without mysql support. I didn't think it's in the vmware configuration :) By the way, everytime I run vmware after a notebook reboot, it asks me to run vmware-config.pl again. So, I run it everytime. Strange.. Known problem with udev, there are several solutions floating around on the net. A google search or search of the archives here should yield quite a few hits on how to solve this.
