The discussion on the Club started because some guy that was selling the download edition on e-bay got his auctions yanked because himandrake represented themselves to ebay as the owner of the mandrake trademarks and copyrights. If this is a US based partner of MandrakeSoft that is enforcing an exclusive agreement, fine, but they could also be a sleazy outfit that is trying to profit off of Mandrake's good name. I am more inclined to think the latter because I don't see anywhere on the himandrake site where they state they are an official partner, and every place where they might say so, it refers only to himandrake or Heavy Industrial and there are no links to the MandrakeSoft or linux-mandrake websites. Mandrake invented the Mandrake Club two years ago as a way of resolving its cash problems. 2. In order to increase Club membership, Mandrake recently sweetened the pot by allowing only Club members to download 9.2 for the first few weeks after release. 3. Mandrake's distributor (HiMandrake) gets the Club-only files, burns some CD's, and offers them on e-bay _before_ the ISO's are available to man + dog. Sorta defeats the Club exclusivity feature, doesn't it? 4. The same distributor also shuts down anyone else who tries the same scam^H^H^H^Hdeal, claiming to have exclusive rights. 5. Or maybe, their agreement with Mandrake said they could sell CDs after such and such date, which was with the assumption the box sets would be ready. Or maybe they paid Mandrake some some of money to be able to do this. Regardless, they have Mandrake's blessing. C. Tresenriter wrote: (11-07) 10:47 PST WASHINGTON (AP) _ A drive to permanently ban Internet access taxes stopped dead in the Senate on Friday, stuck in a clash over whether the legislation would shear millions from the budgets of state and local governments. The problem arose over the definition of Internet access -- services that connect consumers to the Internet. The strongest proponents for a permanent ban want to make sure that all access technologies -- from phone lines to DSL to cable modems -- get equal freedom from taxation. Opponents said the definition supporters crafted to incorporate new technologies was too vague and could go too far -- eliminating taxes on many types of Internet technologies and telecommunications delivered through the Internet. Several states currently collect taxes on Internet access services, and opponents of the ban are worried that the legislation could limit this revenue source. You could see billions and billions of dollars lost, said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D. Definitions are everything. The two sides scrapped a planned Senate debate and instead began negotiations, hoping to strike a compromise by next week. The proponents of the permanent ban offered a compromise -- a temporary extension of the ban for about 5 years, as long as the new bill treats all Internet technologies equally. If you can have the set of definitions that ensure competitive environment, that you don't favor one set of providers over another, I'm willing to consider a very significant concession, said Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com There's a lot that we don't consider interent that would be affected, too. For instance, SWBell is planning on converting their telephone service to VoIP. As such, it would be exempt from taxes if the internet tax ban was in place. So, if you uses Sprint, you would have to pay tax, if you used SWBell, you wouldn't! That is what the debate is about, in ensuring competition. In addition, the internet tax ban in it's current form would effectively remove from taxation almost all kinds of communication networks and would thusly seriously affect the already dismal tax situation in many states. First the -wall in your make file will cause all errors AND warnings to stop the process. If you don't want warnings to stop the compile, remove the -wall. Second and more important, have you tried just compiling the drivers as a module and using insmod to use them? If you do compile them as a module, you will get an error about the kernel being compiled with 3.x and the module with 2.96, but it may still work if you use insmod -f mymodule (the -f says to force the module). On the otherhand, it may not work. On one of my boxes with a winmodem, the driver must be inserted with the -f because it, too, has an object file that was compiled with gcc 2.96, even though I am using gcc 3.3. Re: [newbie] i586 vs i686

Looking around in KDE's start menu, I saw the KDE Control Center. I have been using the Mandrake Control Center so I decided to see what the KDE one looked like. Under the Index tab (with no tree options selected) I see i686 listed as my machine type. So what is the difference between these two? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com i586 designated the original Pentium class machine (whether Intel or AMD equivelant). Since then, improved designs have occurred (Pentium II, III, IV, Athlon, etc.). The i686 refers to these newer Pentium class machines. If things are compiled for i686 you might see improved performance. The reason I say might is because there are so many things that factor into performance that compiler optimizations are just a small part. For instance, a 3GHz processor running a slow hardrive or in a machine with limited memory, won't see any benefit from the i686 optimizations. Likewise, a relatively slow processor (i.e. 500mhz) with 128MB of RAM would see a big performance increase going to 256MB of memory, but you probably wouldn't notice a thing with i686 optimizations. Now on a fast machine, with lots of memory and a fast harddrive, the i686 optimizations might get your Mozilla browser to load in six seconds instead of eight. If that's worth recompiling everything to you, then go for it, but for most people probably won't see enought of a difference to justify the effort. It's kind of like my mom who people keep trying to convice she needs a new computer (she uses it just for internet and word processing). I tell her that a new computer won't maker her type any faster (word processing), nor will it make her e-mail or web browsing any faster (she uses a 56k modem). It might make things seem snappier, but real work on the system will take about the same amount of time (I should point out that she is 80 years old and her current computer is 450mhz). In short, in theory, the i686, can let your computer get certain cpu tasks done quicker, but if the cpu is spending most of it's time waiting for you to do something (ie type), then you won't see a major difference. Not to start a distro war, but on Gentoo's web site (which there distro is compiled based on cpu type, so i686). They have some benchmarks showing how i686 Gentoo out performs Mandrake's stock install (this is in response to an article showing Mandrake out performing Gentoo). The important part is their conclusion which states something like for some tasks the stock Mandrake (i586) is faster and for others Gentoo (i686) is faster. So again, it depends on how you use your computer as to the benefit you will see. If you are doing some gene resequencing, then yes, i686 optimizations will make a difference. If you are doing high graphic intensive gaming, then, it might make a difference. If you are using it for general word processing, mp3 playing, internet, etc. i686 probably won't have a noticable effect. Joeb Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? To further complicate it, since they're both on the same controller (and cable) and one is UDMA 133 and the other UDMA 100, the fastest they will go is 100 and maybe only 66 because of the mismatch (although I'm not positive on the 66 part). Finally, I believe Windows is caching it's writes which will speed things up, at the expense of safety. Joeb There's two parts involved, the drive firmware (controller interface) and the controller on the motherboard. So unless you've got separate PCI controller cards, all the drives use the one controller, whether they're on the same cable or not. What is to be avoided is putting a CD drive and HDD on the same cable. In any event, no matter the number of controller cards you might have, they all use the one old and tired 33mhz PCI bus. So I could'a separated the HDD drives, one to a cable (ide port). But I knew there's no point in that. I believe the hdparm numbers back me up on that opinion ;) OTOH, hdparm spits out burst numbers. In the real world I get about 20mb/sec transfers, ReiserFS to RieserFS, whether just moving files on the same HDD, or hda to hdb. I didn't wanna try separating the HDD's. When I installed the new mobo/cpu/ram, I configured the ide's just as they were on the old mobo. So when I booted up for the first time, my existing Mandrake 9.2 install found the new onboard NIC, and then went on like nothin was amiss. But with two drives on a single IDE controller, hdparm will never show a degredation of speed because it tests each drive seperately, one after the other. As such, at the time of testings, only one drive is being accessed so there is no contention. If that is how the drives are used in real life, one at a time, then no problem, but for instance, let's say hda contains your web site and hdb has your ftp site and both have heavy access (of course, this is hypothetical, because if they are heavily accessed, you probably should be using SCSI). Anyway, if that is the scenario, IDE0 can only talk to hda OR hdb, not both so you will introduce a contention. If the hdb drive is moved to IDE1 (thus becoming hdc), then both hda and hdc can handle requests simultaneously. On a more practical note, I do a lot of compiling of software. To keep things simple, I have a source volume on a separate drive, and there is a noticable difference when the source I'm compiling is on a different controller than the lib and headers of the actual linux distro. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but it is significant in the amount of time difference (some things seconds, others minutes to hours). Anyway, for normal use, it probably won't make much of a difference, but if you're trying to squeeze maximum throughput out of a system and you have the extra IDE channel available, why not use it? Since IDE can only write to one drive at a time per controller, improved performance would result in using the secondary IDE controller. To further complicate it, since they're both on the same controller (and cable) and one is UDMA 133 and the other UDMA 100, the fastest they will go is 100 and maybe only 66 because of the mismatch (although I'm not positive on the 66 part). Re: [newbie]
Sorry to butt in. While I have been an ardent supporter of HP56 (PCTel) modems in the past, I don't believe they are a good choice for Linux anymore. The problem is that the ptserial driver is compiled with gcc 2.9x and most current versions of Linux use gcc 3.x. What this means is that when you insmod the drivers, you must issue an -f to force the module to load (otherwise, you get an incompatible compiler message and the load fails). Since it has to be forced to load, simply inserting it in modules.conf will fail to load it, too. The only option is to load it manually (or through a script). To the best of my knowledge, this driver is not open source, so it's not an option to just recompile it with the new(er) gcc. Loading it through a script does work, but it is an ugly kludge. It insists on you at least entering the install bootloader programme, so I assumed there must be some way of clicking a cancell tab , but as I say I couldn't find one. Someone please inform me ! John I'm thinking that you might need to use the expert mode to install MDK and not install LILO, but I'm not sure about that. Just in case, that is not correct, make a backup copy of your existing lilo.conf and then do the install. One of two things will happen. Your new install will put lilo on the MBR of the new HD (meaning when your original mounts on reboot, your new one won't be there in the list, since the old lilo doesn't know about the new drive). If that's the case, just add the lines to lilo.conf for your new drive, rerun lilo and reboot. All should be fine. On the other hand, your new install might overwrite the original MBR and you are now without your original lilo.conf. If that is the case, add either add the lines to the new lilo.conf for your original drive or copy the backup of the lilo.conf back, edit it for the new drive. Either way, run lilo before rebooting. When installing the second 9.1, don't install any boot loader. Then, reboot to your old linux, modify the lilo.conf and add the lines pointing to the second copy (don't forget to rerun lilo). If that is the case, then whichever it is using might be conflicting with the TTY port for your regular serial ports (again using windows terms, com1 and com3 share interrupts as do com2 and com4). If you think that is the case, then in your CMOS settings, you can disable the on-board serial port (most likely com2). And then see if it's detected. An easy way to detect a modem under Mandrake is to switch to a console window (not a shell) by pressing ctrl-alt-F1 (assuming you boot to a gui). Once there, log in as root and issue the command modemconf. A window should be displayed and you can click on the button to locate it. If it finds the modem, it will automatically create the /dev/modem link and point it to the appropriate port. See if that helps, and let us know. Also, if you have problems figuring out what you need from the linmodem site, I'm sure some on this list will probably has the same modem (chipset) and can offer assistance in getting it to work. Re: [newbie] Why ISO? was: 9.1 final has been released
Eric, While the ISO images do allow you to boot from the CD (assuming your computer allows it), the purpose of the ISO images is to keep from having to download all the individual files to some directory somewhere and then installing across a network or worse yet, from installing from the download site across the internet! Basically, the ISO images are direct copies of the CDs so you can duplicate the original. Once the CDs are burned, the ISO images are no longer needed. Most of the problems with burning the ISO images were with the 9.0 images that used 700MB CDs (80 minute). Older CD burners couldn't write them. Mandrake 9.1 went back to the 650MB images because of this (who says they don't listen to users). This is in 9.1, but I think it holds true for 9.0, also. Go to the Mandrake Control Center, and go to the System option. From there, there should be an option called DrakServices. Re: [newbie] Backup to CD-R/RW
Anne, I'm not sure if you're the one who started this thread or not, but if you are looking for a way to backup an entire partition (Linux or Windows, Novell), you might want to check out InstantRecovery from NovaStor Corporation: http://www.no-panic.com/recovery/irecover.html It's not free, but is pretty cheap (around $40 US). It basically works like Ghost and makes an image of the entire drive or individual partitions. It will create the image on bootable CD and CD/RW media, too. And best of all, it actually is based on Linux (at least version 3.1-the version I have is). I've compiled this driver with versions 8.0 through 9.1RC1 of Mandrake (although the 9.1 betas and RC1 needed some tweaking of the script to get it to work). I'm not at my linux box right now, but will be this this evening. But I can check then on my notes as to anything special I had to do. Almost always, with Mandrake, the error you are getting means that the actual kernel sources were not installed (or installed correctly). What version of Mandrake are you running and what package did you install for the kernel sources (and did you change the name of the install directory)? Joeb Thanks for your response. I am already back working with the old and good 2.4.19-16. And waiting for 9.1. Thanks again, Were you trying to compile against one of the beta or RC1 releases? If so, the kernel for those versions have pre imbedded in the version name. This causes the ./configure script to choke when it tries to determine what kernel version you are using (it looks for an integer for each part). Anyway, you can modify the script and hard code the version name with the pre embedded in it (just remember to change it back when 9.1 is really released). I think OO actually uses myspell. Installing myspell-en will take care of it if you use English. You will also need to check the settings as Anne pointed out after installing. Finally, you might want to also install OpenOffice.org-help, which are the help files for OpenOffice.org. First, if you installed any version of freetype2 other than what came with Mandrake, you will need to uninstall it and reinstall the original. It seems that the later versions of freetype2 are broken. If that's not the case (or even if it is), you might try editing /etc/openoffice/openoffice.conf and change the line that UI_FONT=AUTO to something like UI_FONT=Verdana or something like that. You may also have to change the FONT_SCALING setting, too. If the UI_FONT isn't set to AUTO, you might try setting it as such. [newbie] PC Chips 810LR motherboard results
Over the Christmas holiday, I decided to upgrade my old 500Mhz AMD K6-2 system. I had purchased a PC-Chips 810LR motherboard and AMD 1200 Mhz Duron from EconoPC for $70.00. If you are not familiar with this board, it only has two PCI slots, 1 AGP slot and on-board LAN, sound and VGA. It is based on the Sis730S chipset and supports AMD Duron through XP processors. My decision to use this board was also influenced by my aging Voodoo Banshee video card. I simply did not have the money to order a new CPU, motherboard and video card and I couldn't see buying a new motherboard/cpu and still using the old video card. So, while it may not be suitable for heavy duty server use, with only two PCI (and an AGP) slot, for desktop and development use, it works quite well (particularly if you are on a very limited budget). After installing the system board in the case, I connected my existing CD-ROM, Hardrives and floppy to the motherboard connectors. I was curious as to what would happen if I simply powered the computer on, and so I did. I dual boot, so first I tried Windows. It would not boot, except into safe mode, and failed to even find the second IDE controller (it was still using the old driver files for IDE and video). To my surprise, booting into Mandrake 9.0, everything came up great, except for X-Windows (which I didn't expect it to). A quick reconfigure of the X-Server for the new video and everything was running normal. I was really impressed that Mandrake found all the new devices and reconfigured itself so smoothly. I had already decided that I was going to reformat the drives and reinstall both Windows and Mandrake, so I did that next. I started with Windows and it was a headache, to say the least. To make a long story short, it took about 2.5 hours from start to finish on installing Windows and the applications I wanted to use. This included six reboots during driver installs. The Mandrake install, on the other hand, went smoothly and flawlessly. Mandrake automatically detected and installed the correct drivers for the built in video and lan. From start to finish, it took about 35 minutes and that included installing and configuring my applications and restoring my home directory! Overall, I am extremely pleased with the upgrade. Boot time on this computer is in the neighborhood of 10 seconds. I boot directly to an X login (kdm) and to launch KDE takes about another 8 seconds. Everything loads very quickly (Mozilla takes about three seconds). Well, everything but OpenOffice.org, which still takes some time. My old 500Mhz system would take about 45 seconds to boot and about another 30 for KDE to load. In additions, I have not run into any compatibility problems. In short, I would like to say that if you are looking for a low-cost system board/cpu and don't require a lot of expansion slots, you may want to check out the PC Chips 810LR. For the second one, here is the real story: Mandrakesoft started on a shoestring and a hope, originally as a spare-time project for one person. It was immensely popular from inception and soon MADE A PROFIT. Then arrived the venture capitalists They invested monies but wanted an international team of executives to manage the company. Such a team was acquired. Under that team, the expenses went up about 400% without a concomitant increase in revenue. The direction was modified from a linux distributor to an internet education company with a hook to linux. The soundness of that idea was never proven, as the dot.com bubblke burst and investors worldwide went into full retreat. For Mandrakesoft this was a curse and a blessing. The curse was the negative cash position and high burn rate and the blessing was a return to being a linux company. Mandrakesoft has made huge strides in bringing revenue up to meet expenses and in cutting expenses. Mandrake also has a hidden asset in the loyalty of contributors, And they are finally selling the right way--software is free if you want it and rather expensive if you expect extensive support.
