Re: OT - a web host that won't filter spam
Thanks everyone for your replies, I have a few web hosts to look at now. The big problem is that automatic filtering does not work, in that it will bounce legitimate e mail. I use mailwasher to filter our e mail, I have it set to highlight e mail that is listed on some of the spam lists. I then look at it to see if it is legitimate. It does not take long ( I get about 20% spam, even though the web hosts is now telling me that filter everything ) and mailwasher keeps a log I check daily, incase I accidently delete something I wanted ( you can recover most of the text in the e mail ). I actually doubt they are filtering my e mail now. I was getting e mail listed on one of the lists they said they used, as they were telling me they will never will let spam on any of their servers. I want to change because they lied to me and refused to even apologize when they were caught out. The lens was shown as back-ordered on their web site. I phoned and a very helpful customer service operator helped me with information on when the Credit Card is charged and shipping cost policies on part shipments. I then emailed the sales person she specified with the details of my multipart order with and a copy (as requested) to her. I then went to bed as it was about 3am :) The following day I forwarded by email - again to the same customer service person - my credit card authentication, scans of front and back of card and the first page of a recent bill to authenticate the address etc. The actual ordering was on the USA Friday morning and the lens was shipped via UPS on the following USA Monday and it arrived on the following Friday (local time) at my home in a Melbourne suburb. If the lens had not become available and there were significant items in the rest of the order their policy is to ship the other items and NOT to charge the card for delayed items until the item(s) is(are) shipped - they also bear any extra shipping costs involved. The lens cost me about US$220 and about US$35 for shipping which was considerably less than I found on web prices in Oz. Especially when the shipping costs were shared over the other items. My only loss is that if there is a warranty problem with the lens I may have to send it back to the USA for warranty service or possibly pay full rates for local service - this is a risk I am prepared to take with a lens. What I really need to know first though, is . . . how do you get to the sensor? I'd feel better if I could at least see where the dust might be. When I remove the lens and carefully lift up the mirror what I see is the blades of the shutter, not the sensor. Everything new is obscure again
Greetings all, After a couple years absence I've returned to the list. My passion for Pentax never waned during my time away, but my leisure to keep up with the list did. In the intervening years I've been drawn closer to going digital, so the time has come to ask the right questions of the people in the know. 1. Can someone give me a brief explanation (or confirmation) of the differences in the istD, DL, and DS (plus the 2 versions). I've read what I can about them but just when I think I'm getting the general idea of them in comparison I still feel like something eludes me. For example, I know the plain D is the oldest of the three, and the most expensive, but I find myself asking, Why is this camera still being made? I get the general sense that the D is aimed at a higher level user than the DL or DS, though they all have many of the same features, and the LCD screens are bigger on the more recent models, but I still don't feel like I have a clear idea of what the D can do that the DS or DL can't. What makes the D cost twice as much as a camera that's several years newer? 2. I'm attracted to the Ds for the Pentax experience I've had for the last 27 years and the option to use my existing A series lenses. Can someone clarify what happens to the focal length when an older lens is put on the newer body? 3. Can I use my AF400T flash with any of the Ds? 4. What are the latest rumors about the next generation of Pentax digital SLRs? I know one of the inevitable questions about dispensing advice will be What kind of photographer are you? The easiest answer is somewhere in that vague area that defines people who have a bachelor's degree in photography, do some freelance commercial work when they have to, but generally do their own personal photo projects. After 18 years with an MX I bought in college (with money I earned using my dad's Spotmatic), I've used an LX for the past eight or nine years. And, boy, you go away from the list for a few months and a whole new set of acronyms pops up. You certainly can't tell the players if you don't have a scorecard. Would someone patient be so kind to explain what the following terms mean to the casual reader: GESO PESO PAW GFM PEOW anything else that comes to mind Thanks. I did miss reading the messages and am glad to be tuned in again. -Stephen

Re: Camera shops and Monday's heat
Thank you everyone who replied. It was a Camera House store. They have now realized what it is and have told my lover there are none available in Australia. Meanwhile in my wondering I went into two other camera stores. One said they only carry Hoya filters and Hoya say they don't have any, at least the're honest. The second simply said they had never heard of UV photographs. I've been off line for these few days because the video card in one computer died and the mother board died in the other. The computer shop ran out of video cards on Tuesday! They also tell me that at one stage during the week half their shop floor ( they have double frontage, with average depth ) was covered with PCs either waiting for repair or pickup afterwards. They told me that one possible explanation was Monday's heat, but they also think some PCs were injured by stupidity. The heat does make sense as we don't have air conditioning and both PCs were on till mid afternoon. Also my lover has heard of mobile phones and other gadgets simply giving up the ghost on Monday and Tuesday. Anyway, I am still determined to get a UV pass filter! Stephen
Camera shops!!!
My Lover likes to know what I want for presents and I thought I would like to try UV photography. So I put ' 58mm UV pass filter for UV photography eg 18A ' on the list. She took the list to the camera shop closest to where she works and got them to order some stuff in. They even made a joke about other things on the list when she showed it to them. On christmas day when she handed me one of the parcels she said this was the only one they had in stock. I opened it and it was a UV haze filter. I thought I had made it plain enough that they could figure out I did not want that. No problems take it back and get them to order what we want. Her first day back at work was yesterday and she went to the shop in her lunch time. She was told that the 18A is the same filter but it costs more than twice as much. So according to them an 18A cuts out UV light. Not only that their oldest expert, who is apparently also a professional photographer, told her that he could tell from the list that I was just converting to digital photography and I was making basic mistakes, like he did. And the only filter I really wanted was a star filter. Fortunately she is a sensible girl and will only accept what's on the list. There was no digital specific items on the list. I do have a star filter, which I haven't used in years. Bloody camera shops! Stephen

It's got channels in the bed so that the safety stops on either end of the QR plate can slide almost all the way to the middle of the clamp. This helps a lot with fore-and-aft balance. I'd heard that Really Right Stuff was working on such a clamp, with the added benefit of lever-action quick release. If your QR plate has safety stops on both ends, as Wimberley's do, you have to open the clamp all the way and drop the lens foot in, and then tighten it down. (You can't slide it in from the end.) The lever release would make this quicker and safer. HTH, Stephen Moore

It's my main finder for racing. Being an eyeglass wearer, I like the eye relief, and the higher viewpoint makes it much easier to shoot with both eyes open -- pretty necessary at the racetrack. Road Trip (long-ish)
Hey, gang -- A couple of Thursdays ago I braved the beginnings of a snowstorm and set off down I-81 to Winchester, VA, about 45 miles south of home, with an SMC-A*400/2.8 and two bodies. Destination: Wimberley. Objective: Proving to myself, once and for all, that this lens wouldn't balance properly on a Wimberley head so I could stop lusting after one. Lens collars are one of my exasperation points with Pentax. For every one they do right (the 600/4 comes to mind), they do others with the foot too short and too far back (like my 400), or omit it completely on lenses that by rights ought to be collared. I'm using a Really Right Stuff MPR-1 6 lens plate attached as far forward as it will go, but even pulling it all the way back in my ballhead's clamp, the rig is more nose-heavy than I'm fully comfortable with. Wimberley is in a small industrial park, two easy right turns off the Interstate. Two smallish office rooms in front, plus a back shop of indeterminate size (I didn't get to see that). The tops of the wall cubbies chronicle the evolution of the Wimberley head, all the way from an early prototype made out of wood and metal strapping. Nice people, too. David Wimberley introduced himself, claiming that he's not a photo- grapher. I asked how it happened that so respected a photographic product was developed by a nonshooter; he just laughed and kind of changed the subject. Anyway, they got out a full Wimberley atop a Gitzo 1410, and I got out the 400 with LX and winder. We hefted it up, slid it back and forth in the clamp a bit, tightened it down, and loosened the gimbal controls. Oh, crap! It balanced. Nicely. You really can move your rig around with one finger. It's easy to see why people who have this head love it. The Wimberley clamp is a help here: it has channels in the bed that let the plate safety stops go almost to the center in either direction. (I understand that the latest RRS clamp does this, too.) It was interesting that the staff said they hadn't seen any Pentax big glass in person. (They agreed that it's green, by the way.) Would I mind if they took some digital images of the setup? vbg So a good time was had by all -- but the little angel and devil on my shoulders, Enablement and Disenablement, are yammering at me louder than ever. Sigh... Later, Stephen

Arca-Swiss app notes
Here's something you LXers might find useful: About a year ago I caught the Arca-Swiss QR virus, and had been looking for an appropriate camera body plate for my Winder LX. Really Right Stuff's recommended (and generic) B21 plate works very nicely with the LX body alone. It also fits the winder, but the problem with the winder is the pronounced leftwards offset of the tripod socket. RRS's recom- mendation, their B9, does not address the offset problem and also does not have a safety stop. RRS B21 B9: http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/body_plates/pentax/index.html Strictly on spec, I just bought Kirk's PZ-21 plate for the Nikon F3 with motor drive MD4. Fits just fine on the LX winder, just missing that small longitudinal bump. It lets you center the camera over the ball head the way it's supposed to be for best weight transfer. Kirk PZ-21: http://www.kirkphoto.com/newplate1p.html Down sides are two in number: 1. The plate covers up the battery holder release button - but that's why insert deity here created Allen wrenches. Besides, I've never had to change winder batteries in the field. 2. Kirk plates don't appear to have safety stops. I'm off to see a machinist friend about drilling and tapping an appropriate hole. Hope this helps someone, Stephen Moore

Re: seeking recommendations for a good 300mm prime
Amita -- I concur on the M*300/4 as a very nice hand-holdable long lens. I use it a lot at the races. My only gripe is that it's a heavy lens with no tripod collar, meaning I pretty much *have* to hand-hold. You should submit #1 to the PDML self-portraits page. g (That's another thing this lens does well, whether or not one wants it to...) Thanks for sharing. Stephen Moore

John -- Extremely well done! I'm pretty sure it's going to influence my next racetrack shoot... Thanks for sharing, Stephen Moore ___ John Mason wrote: Fellow Pentaxians, The first fruits of my photo documentary project on drag racing are up on the Fixing Shadows website: http://fixingshadows.org/
Re: Pentax at the Track
Mostly motorcycle and vintage sports car roadracing. Your piece reminded me that it's too easy to get hung up on the cars or bikes. There's a whole human side that I find myself neglecting, and that you've captured really well. Perhaps it has to do with cost, but the bike sports (roadracing and motocross) seem to have as much diversity as drag racing -- though I've yet to see a female motocrosser! ;-) Stephen John Mason wrote: Now, don't embarrass me. What are you shooting? Sports cars, Nascar, drags? Monster trucks?
Re: An Enzo at the Dream Cruise
Paul -- Was it even a little bit weird seing an Enzo at what is obviously a celebration of the American auto industry? Kinda like showing up on your Yamaha sport bike at the local Hell's Angels bar? ;-) Stephen Paul Stenquist wrote: Enzo Ferarris are, well, really expensive. I was surprised to see one out in traffic among the other 40,000 cars at the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise in Detroit last weekend. Of course it's not as surprising as seeing a million dollar F1 car in a vintage race. If you can afford to break it, you can do what you want. In any case, I shot the Enzo with my SMC A 400/5.6 on the *ist D. ISO 200, tripod, RAW. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2639520size=lg

Re: PESO:Hongkong Ship Docks 1981 - and a pentax ad too
Hello Markus Maurer -- I agree completely with Christian - I love this shot! http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2566318 As an aside, it makes my mind do a weird little twist to see an ocean-going ship the size of the MS Silvretta calling Basel its home port. There's that long, *long* river you have to sail down first... (Had some fun times at Fasnacht in the early 1970s, but that's another tale -- one for which I wish I had had a camera.) Thanks for some cool photos, Stephen Moore
