Excuse my ignorance here, but ... I can't help but wonder how would
that be any different than what they said when the 645d was
introduced?

I mean no snark, but they rolled that out with one new lens, right?
Compared to the half dozen or so DFA/ FA lenses in current production,
plus the 60-250 which is rumored to be FF... it doesn't seem too
non-credible to me. What am I missing?

GESO: At the track

2012-02-01 Thread Christine Nielsen
So... as a follow-up to the other day's hockey pics, I thought I'd
share some I did the weekend before, at an indoor track meet.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/23028562@N04/sets/72157629116216583/with/6796372073/

Conditions weren't as chilly, but definitely dimmer, and with
faster-moving subjects. I kept the K-5 at 16,000 ISO most of the day.
Which is starting to push the limit, at least when you peep... I'll
also mention that I shot these as jpegs - unintentionally. (D'oh!) I
wonder how that might have limited these images...not that it matters
much to their fb audience...

But still, it does get one thinking about what difference ff would
make in this situation... especially with the uptick in recent chatter

Thanks, Paul. It's funny that you use the word "intensity"... these
kids like to say that they "Focus on their focus & are intense about
their intensity." A little running humor, I guess. :) And speaking
of intense, I'll mention the kid wearing #5 is my son... lol.

It's also funny -- I had the camera set to jpeg from my class the day
before, and just forgot to switch it. When I realized what I had
done, I figured I had really messed up the wb, since the light in
there was so... whack. It wasn't catastrophic, though... and in the
end, it was a pretty quick edit of 250+ pics. We RAW shooters probably
too often forget the merits of shooting jpegs...

Well... at the risk of appearing unreasonable... When I pixel-peep at
these images, and look at the faces in particular, the noise gets
bothersome... I just wonder how much better a FF sensor would be at
resolving those little details at the same ISO... Or if it would have

Re: GESO: At the track

2012-02-01 Thread Christine Nielsen
Thanks, Don.

Yes, I've heard that as well about sports photogs... I'm guessing they
usually have tons of photos to weed through, and in a short amount of
time, so jpegs make sense.

I'd also guess there's a certain amount of confidence that's required
for shooting jpegs as a pro. I had a well-regarded instructor at New
England School of Photography who did weddings & events
occasionally... and he always shot jpegs, and would download the
images onto a cd for the client before he left. I imagine that most
wedding photogs would be loath to do business that way, for several
reasons, but he was just that confident in his ability to get it right
"in camera"...

Ah well, it won't be long 'til baseball season... it was 60 degrees in
Boston this Feb 1...!

Technical difficulties - K-5/battery

2012-02-06 Thread Christine Nielsen
Hi all, Happy Monday.

What do you make of this...

Shooting at my daughter's gymnastics meet yesterday, I noticed my
battery was starting to get low. I had an extra in my bag, so I
switched it out. I took a shot, and then all kinds of clicking
started to happen. It wasn't taking pics on its own, though that's
what it sounded like... Maybe it was the sound of the mirror going up
& down, I'm not sure... but it was all very odd. It seemed like the
AF wasn't working, and once the clicking started, I couldn't get it to
shoot. I shut off the camera, and turned it back on, to see if that
would help. Nope. Each initial shot inspired a new round of random
clicks and non-responsiveness,

I took out the battery, and put the first one back in. This seemed to
solve the problem, and I was able to continue as usual. I have yet to
review the images, though... fingers crossed that the card isn't
fried

Still, I am left with lingering concerns Should I consider that
battery (Pentax brand) a goner? I certainly don't feel comfortable
putting it back into the camera... Has the camera been damaged in some
way, deep in the electronic guts? What about the lens? Is it taking
longer now to display the review image, or is it just my
imagination??? Ugh.

Larry... didn't you have a misbehaving battery situation not that long ago?

Thanks for any thoughts...

The original is charging now... I must say I'm skittish about putting
the wacky battery back in there.

This is why I changed out the batt when i first saw the charge was
depleted -- looked "2/3 full"... I do think AF works better fully
charged on the 50-135, too...

In any case if it's not a battery, it's probably a power supply.

Ah, ok. Thanks -- a little googling on that turned up some videos
that are not entirely dissimilar to what I was seeing. Interesting.
Seems like many of those experiences are with off-brand batteries, and

Interesting... Nikon & Canon both offer their 50s in 1.4 & 1.8... the
latter being the "nifty 50" that sells for relatively short money.
Talk about a hole in the Pentax lens line-up. Maybe this 50/1.8 will
fill it...?

Instant JPEG from RAW utility

2012-02-13 Thread Christine Nielsen
Stumbled upon this the other day in a Scott Kelby book I was browsing
at a warehouse club store maybe some of you have seen it? It's a
utility that will extract the jpeg preview from RAW files.
Interesting, I thought. Works with the DNG files, looking forward to
seeing if it will conjure the "styled' jpegs (vibrant, monochrome,
portrait, natural, bleach bypass, etc), someday when I get a moment...
Just for fun.

Re: Instant JPEG from RAW utility

Well, procrastinating on other things (it's tough to get going on a
Monday morning) has allowed me the time to test the styled jpeg
question... and it works. So, if you shoot RAW, with one of the
picture style modes selected (monochrome, vibrant, portrait, etc), you
can extract that styled jpeg preview from the DNG file using this
utility. Nifty.

Yes, I'm not really sure just how often I'd use it... But the other
day I had an "oops" moment & shot a track meet full of jpegs before I
realized I had forgotten to reset to DNG capture... "Editing" those
pics for facebook display was so fast, it made me wonder why I bother
messing around with RAW files all the time... especially if only for
teenagers on fb. I still would like to have RAW images, but I don't
want to manage RAW plus jpegs... This seemed like an easy way (from
the contextual menu in the Finder) to create proofs, as needed.

Of course, had I ever bothered to take the Pentax software out of the

This is only tangentially related, but I'll mention it anyway, since
it relates to battery hygiene, and might save you a headache
someday... about a month ago, my K-5 had a little freak-out (google:
mirror flop) after I inserted an "over-charged" battery. We're
talking about the Pentax Li-ion battery, in the Pentax charger...
there was a mix-up, and I had placed it back on the charger, even
though it had already been fully charged. From the research I've
done, it seems the K-5 doesn't cope well with an over-charged batt...
my K-7 doesn't seem to have the same issue, and I haven't heard of the
issue with any other Pentax camera. Since then, I've been more
careful about what's fully charged & what isn't, and haven't had a
recurrence of the flops.

Like I said, only tangentially related to your issue, but after that
episode, I guess I can understand how a perfectly nice person could
get a little lunatic-y about their batteries...

lol.

Re: Wireless tethering simplified (and cheap)

2012-02-27 Thread Christine Nielsen
Thanks for sharing that, Bruce... I'll have to give it a try. Have
you ever used PK Tether? (Me neither)

To Larry's question about the HDMI & Live view... yes. I've hooked up
my K-5 via HDMI to a projector in my classes, and projected the live
view, as well as everything else you can see on the lcd (jpeg
previews, histograms, etc.) It's a pretty handy trick for those
times. I would assume any monitor with an HDMI input would work.

I'd be happy if I could connect the HDMI to my Mac Book for a
tether-like set-up... but that doesn't work. I've occasionally
considered getting another monitor for that purpose, but the Eye-fi
solution sounds just as effective, cheaper, and with fewer wires.

What's my day rate?

2012-02-28 Thread Christine Nielsen
Hi all,

Here's my deal... I have a couple of clients for whom I do product
photography -- small businesses who need images for their websites &
promotional materials. Usually, they send me the items, and I charge
an hourly rate for photographing & editing. It works pretty well.

Recently, one of them asked me to come to their place, and spend the
day photographing a bunch more stuff, one-of-a-kind-type items that
they have. And... asking what is my day rate?

So. My question is, should the Day Rate = Hourly Rate x 8? Should it
reflect a bulk discount from that price? Should I incorporate a
mark-up that reflects the time I will spend in post? Or charge that
time separately? What about travel? It's about an hour's drive
away... Also, is this where I insist on special provisions, like only
Norwegian spring water in the break room, and kobe beef sliders for
lunch? (kidding!)

Thanks for your thoughts, PDMLers...

I'm more interested in coming up with a fair, reasonable fee... I'd
like to do the work, but I don't want to give away my services, or
overcharge. Finding the sweet spot in between is the challenge...

Agreed. Sometimes, this work requires more creativity, in setting up
& "styling" a group of items... but this will be just straightforward
product shots, on white seamless. Should be relatively easy to do a
bunch of items all in one whack...

So... your tablet has HDMI in, yes? HDMI out, too? I remember you
showing it around when we were in the 'hood together, but I can't
remember which one you have... The growing secondhand ipad market has

Re: Anybody still shooting film?

2012-03-13 Thread Christine Nielsen
I'm teaching a photography class to middle schoolers this month. Last
week, we were talking about the anatomy of a camera... I pulled out a
K-1000 to demonstrate a few things, and asked: has anyone ever used a
film camera?

I got lots of blank looks, but then a hand went up, "My Grandma has one!!"

So, there you go. One Grandma.

Photographing artwork for prints

2012-03-20 Thread Christine Nielsen
Hello all, and happy spring!

I come to you again, seeking wisdom... I've had an inquiry from a
client about photographing artwork (painted canvases) for the purpose
of creating prints... for sale. A couple of issues come to mind:

1) The actual photography... I'm assuming hi-resolution is the name of
the game here. Not sure yet how big they want to go with prints... I
think some of the actual canvases are fairly large (30 x40?)
themselves. From the research I've done, I'd think my K-5 is up to
the task... Should I consider renting a larger-format camera?
Alternatively, at what point should I consider 'stitching" images
together for large pieces?

2) Rights. So, this where I really have no idea... my standard
agreement doesn't provide for the sale of my images by clients. How
does that work? I'm reading up -
http://asmp.org/tutorials/licensing-guide.html has been helpful, btw -
but has anyone out there ever taken on this kind of project or
provided that kind of license?

Any thoughts or experiences you have to share are very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

-c

Re: Photographing artwork for prints

2012-03-20 Thread Christine Nielsen
Just so happens, Light: Science & Magic has been my bedtime reading
(works great!) lately. A very good resource, that one. :)

Funny you should mention work for hire... I was reading about those
distinctions the other day for some other reason, and remember
gleaning that it was something to avoid, for my purposes at the time.
But, maybe this is the perfect application of the concept. As you
say, I have no real need of the "copy" of their artwork... I'm just
in unfamiliar territory with this request & want to make sure I give
them a reasonable quote.

Thanks!

2012-03-21 Thread Christine Nielsen
To all who commented -- I am very grateful. Great feedback, most helpful.

Jostein --Great trick, using the floor... and you have inspired me to
ask about who's doing the printing...

Godfrey -- yes, the "KISS" principle, one to live by. And I
appreciate your thoughts on rights & billing. Sounds like the right
way to go.

Mark -- Good point, they are somewhat 3-d, some more so than others...

John -- I am dealing with the artists, so they do own the work.
Another nudge to make sure I speak with the printing person... thanks.

David -- Yes, that is the gist of what I had previously read about
WFH.. the call has been placed to the attorney... :)

Mark C -- Thanks -- I hope I end up enjoying this job, too! :)

Anthony -- brilliant idea about the mirror!

Bruce -- good to know there is always hope in post. :)

Again, thanks to all!!!

Haha...

Problem is, that is clearly not the demographic they are after with
this camera. A quick perusal of this list will reveal they have

Not that there's anything wrong with that demographic! Some of my

My K-5 is going to Arizona...

2012-03-23 Thread Christine Nielsen
Boohoo.

Mirror flops have resurfaced. "Randomly activating mirror" is what
Randall on Pentax live chat calls it. Of course, he says he couldn't
say what causes it. It's a bummer - I do love this camera in so many
ways, it really stinks that it's less than 6 months old. And, I've
been busy with it -- there's never a good time to be without your
favorite camera, I guess. Thankfully I have my K-7, but it's just
not the same...

Can I be the only one here on the pdml who's seen this affliction?

Well, you're gonna love this, Bob... I took the camera, boxed,
bubble-wrapped, and boxed again, to the post office today. Paid for

to the clerk, and turned to leave. As I left, I could see her go to
put the package on the stack behind her, and... she dropped it.

I haven't seen that. It almost sounds like you were looking at images
with one of those funky special-effects jpeg filters applied...? Is
it possible you had it set to apply one of those? Though I don't know

Strange, for sure.

If it persists, I wouldn't hesitate to ship it off for service --
turnaround time is pretty quick these days.

You know, I've been one of those yakkers in the past. ;)

But, this time around, it's much more smoothly than I ever
anticipated. I'm guessing things are slow over there right now, and
they happened to have in stock whatever parts they needed to do the
fix. So, lucky me!

To their credit, though, I will add that someone from service called

letter (!) & followed up. In the end, I decided to just go with
regular shipping, and she assured me that it would go out that
afternoon.

All in all, very pleasant. Keeping fingers crossed that the camera is
in good shape, too!

Re: New lens prices

2012-04-03 Thread Christine Nielsen
Groan.

The 16-50 has been on my wish list for a while... I guess I should
have bought it $700 ago.

I can understand incremental price increases, but almost double?
Yikes. For a long time, one of the advantages of Pentax has been the
value proposition... if that goes away, then what? Just as expensive
as Canikon, but quirkier, and with no FF option?

Agreed. I was having a hard time justifying the purchase at the old
price, due to the lens' uneven reputation. I can't imagine shelling

PESO: Halloween Strobist

2010-10-31 Thread Christine Nielsen
My first peso here...

I was at my daughter's school Halloween dance earlier this week. Took
a few obligatory pics of her & her friends, but I wasn't feeling
inspired. Then the DJ turned the strobe light on & the kids went
crazy... and there was one little girl at the front of the crowd who
was really getting her groove on! I turned off my flash & set the
shutter speed at .5 sec, just to see what I could get, using the
strobe as my light source This was my fave.

Questions, comments & concerns are all welcome.

Re: peso mr. mom

Definitely funny -- as someone who has walked her share of babies and
dogs (often together), it's a familiar scene.  I love how everyone --
dad, baby, other dog -- is averting their gaze, to give the pooch his
privacy!  Next, I'd like to see dad bend over to scoop, without
dropping baby out on his little head.  :)

Re: peso mr. mom

2010-11-13 Thread Christine Nielsen
Considerate? I'm sure he's thinking his actions -- walking the baby
and *two* dogs! -- goes far beyond the realm of considerate and into
that of superhuman feats. He fully expects to get a medal when he
gets home. Or at least, to be excused from all other domestic duties
for the day. Someone that fabulous doesn't have to scoop poop, doncha
know.

;)

OTOH, maybe he really is *all that* & the plastic baggie is in his
cargo shorts pocket, along with the binkie & bottle...

Re: off-camera flash

2010-11-19 Thread Christine Nielsen
Same here. The ttl cord (3rd party, I think. It's curly...) for
off-camera flash... And I've used the in-camera wireless system to
trigger my flash as well as studio strobes. Both have worked fine,
but I've never used the wireless set-up in anything larger than a
studio.

I've been thinking about getting some RF triggers, too. Maybe
CyberCyncs... I'd be interested to know what others are using for RF
triggers, too...

Re: off-camera flash

2010-11-20 Thread Christine Nielsen
The short spiral cable is only 3 ft long, right? Why not just use the
in-camera wireless capability, if that's how far off-camera you're
going? Save your money for lenses! :)

My ttl cord is 6 ft, has the hotshoe connections built-in, and
available on amazon for about $40. I'm not sure I understand why the
3-pc set is more versatile... What kind of jacks are on the hotshoe
adaptors? Would they be used for anything other than the f5p ttl
cord? Could you use a (pc or 1/8") sync cord to connect to manual
off-camera flash with these?

Just curious,

I can't vouch for the k10d, but the only time the built-in wireless
trigger hasn't worked for me was when the batteries in my flash died.
I know what you mean about losin' that lovin' feelin'... I have a
worthless piece of junk k7, after all. ;) But the only reason I

"needed" them.

I can fire the 360 & 540 together with the wireless set-up... but I
think I've only used the flashes on manual settings. Maybe using
p-ttl changes the ballgame? How does the camera deal with ttl &
multiple flash, anyway...?

Re: Pentax 17-70 repair -- on PARTS HOLD

I had the same response (no ETA for parts) when I sent my k-7 in for
repair about a year ago. It needed a new circuit board, too, iirc...
In the end, it took about 6 weeks. (Longer than the length of time I
had owned the camera at that point.) I hope you have better luck.

I am, so is my husband. And we are still members of the Co-op!
We both spent a lot of time in those bookstores... more time than

the shelf for class, without ever buying. I don't think anyone

Re: Big Chicago Blizzard

2011-02-01 Thread Christine Nielsen
I heard a report last night that there's a possibility Lake Shore
Drive could flood in places...!

We are expecting that storm to arrive in Boston tomorrow... today we
got 6-8 fluffy inches, in the first part of this 1, 2 punch. I just
came in from shoveling 18 inches of accumulated snow off the flat part
of our roof. Tomorrow we'll get up to another foot, but wetter, with
sleet & rain. Are we having fun yet?

I've laid in supplies for the duration, too. Pot of soup on the
stove, meatballs about to go in, a chicken on deck, wine to be
uncorked... the only difficulty I foresee is that we are down to only
2 extra rolls of t.p. Might have to start rationing, if the storms
don't let up...

Best of luck -- be safe!

Re: Big Chicago Blizzard

2011-02-02 Thread Christine Nielsen
I've been following updates from a friend in Chicago, whose husband
was stuck in traffic for 11 hours. He left work at 3pm, and from 5 pm
to 4am, he was stuck in snowy gridlock on LSD near North Ave. No sign
of city plows, assistance or rescue of any kind. If it weren't for
the residents of 1440 N Michigan, who rescued several stranded
motorists, he might still be out there. He waited in their lobby,
trying to catch a cab until 7am, then struck out towards Clark (Tyrone
the doorman had given him his hat!) to catch a bus home...

Snow has turned to freezing rain here. Ick.

Re: OT Screen brightness or print problem

2011-02-05 Thread Christine Nielsen
...If I may butt in with a related question... what about room
lighting? I'm trying to get my own system color-managed, but I've
seen conflicting answers... for calibrating the monitor, should my
room be illuminated "to a reasonable reading level", or "as dark as
possible as long as you can still operate the controls on your
monitor" (http://www.robertstech.com/blog/?p=64!) ..?

Then, once we're all calibrated & editing is underway, how should the
room be lit? The same way as for calibrating? I'm guessing that the
main goal would be consistency in the ambient light... and that it be
consistently daylight-balanced? What about daytime vs nighttime
editing...?

Thanks...

Two year old on your back or not, I like it!

But, it's a subject matter close to my heart... We are big skaters in
our family, and I dabbled in short-track a few years ago. I wish
there were an outdoor (long-track) oval nearby, the closest is at
least 5 hours away in Lake Placid.

Enjoy the games!

have to track some down next time I'm out that way. Where do you

Thanks -- I'll check it out next time I'm in the neighborhood. In the
meantime, I might have to go get myself a jelly donut to address the
cravings...

Years ago, I remember my husband's grandfather getting muskrat at a

on the east coast, I had never heard of such a thing before. Polish?
Or "trapper's delight"?

Help! Can't get k-5 past 6400 iso...

2013-01-26 Thread Christine Nielsen
Ok, I feel like a dummy here, there must be something obvious I'm
missing... and I routinely shoot my k-5 at higher ISOs, just
yesterday I was shooting at 8000, last Saturday at 16,000, so I'm not
even sure how I got into this jam, but here it is:

In manual, I cannot adjust my iso beyond the range of 100 - 6400. In
the Custom menu, 3. expanded sensitivity, is set to "on", but it
describes this option as enabling sensitivity up to iso 6400. In the
Record menu, ISO sensitivity Auto setting, same thing. I cannot
adjust to lower than 100, nor higher than 6400.

What am I missing here? I have a dim recollection of this happening
to me once before... and there was another setting I missed... but
can't for the life of me recall, and I have rtfm several times, to no
avail. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance...
