I visited her at the beginning of December so we could share some time together while she was still able and smiling. She was alert and able to talk until just a couple of days ago, I was able to talk to her on the phone Wednesday and say a last good-bye. Her consciousness faded on Thursday. Yesterday one of my brothers was in attendance at her side when she went softly to sleep and gently stopped breathing for the last time. Museum visit report (Large format photography)
My family are all from small-town rural areas, sometime in the next few years I'll be retiring and moving to a small town, but during my adult life I have always lived in cities. And one thing I have always appreciated about cities are the museums and galleries. Here in Kansas City the Nelson-Atkins is a mid-range (not great) museum, but last year finished a major expansion with the construction of a highly acclaimed (by architects nationally) and frequently ridiculed (by local rubes) new modern space adjoining the original 1930's typical neo-gothic pile of stone. Coincident with, or maybe because of, the expansion, Hallmark Cards (headquartered here in town) gave the museum their entire collection of hundreds of thousands photographic images. And so the new space has large spaces devoted to photography. One relatively permanent section with images of the Masters, a second section with rotating collections of lesser-know artists, and sometimes a photography exhibit in one of the two Special Exhibits sections. Yesterday through early April one of the Special Exhibits is on the work of Art Sinsabaugh. Some of his early work while a student in Chicago in the early 1950's, and then images from his midwest landscape series and his Chicago series, both done in the early-mid 60's. Sinsabaugh used a large format camera. I mean, really large! 12'' x 20 large! His camera (and the very sturdy wooden tripod) were there as part of the exhibit. One of the fascinating aspects of his work is that they were all printed 20' wide (presumably contact printed from the negative.) However, for many of the midwest landscape shorts, the print was only 1-2 tall, and none were over 5 inches tall. So you have a panorama effect achieved through selective cropping from the top, with a very successful result. Though there were a couple I would have liked to have seen full-frame; I think the huge empty sky that he cropped out could have been at least as effective as the very short very wide panoramas. (His Chicago prints tended to be taller because of the greater vertical content he was dealing with in the city.) A smaller exhibit had photos by contemporary photographers Mark Klett and Bryon Wolfe and by Mark Ruwedel. KlettWolfe have done many recreations of the masters' work, locating the exact spot, angle, time of day etc. where Muybridge or Adams must have stood to take some of their iconic images. Their prints are mostly stitched- together panoramas overlaid with reproductions of prints from the original artist. So you can see the broad view, and see what elements of the scene Ansel or whoever chose to focus on. In one particular image, they found a spot on the shore of Lake Tenaya (Yosemite) where at various times Muybridge (1872), Weston (1937) and Adams (1942) all stood and took three very different pictures. A fascinating demonstration of the art of composition. I am not sure about the Sinsabaugh exhibit, but I wouldn't be surprised if the KlettWolfe work showed up at a gallery or museum near you one of these days - worth an afternoon. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Advertising (was Re: Short Attention Spans (was Re: Pentax Photo Gallery Statistics))
Interesting discussion this afternoon on NPR about the Striesand effect. Striesand filed a lawsuit objecting to a web-publication of an image of her house. Nobody had seen or paid attention to the image, but once the lawsuit was know, millions went to the site to see the image. Many other examples. Including the guy who was trying to sell an alcohol inhaler, getting no attention until he had a lawmaker file a bill to outlaw his device, at which point his sales started to go way up. To grab attention, titillate, make it forbidden fruit. Back in the 70's there was some research involving college students. They showed up for an experiment, were left in a waiting room with some file folders jumbled on the table. Most students leafed through the pages in the file folders. For some students, one of the folders was marked confidential but the contents were identical. Subsequent testing showed that they were far more likely to read and remember the information that was confidential. stan On Feb 29, 2008, at 10:15 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote: An excellent observation on the part of Mr. Lanham. Re: One more of Mo
He was a nice looking dog. I know he is missed, and will be for a long time. And I don't think you are being morbid at all! I have been blessed with a number of companions. Every once and a while my wife and I sit and go through a litany of remembrance - my dogs, her dogs and cats, then our mutual dog and cats. Over the last 50 years I have lived with Blackie (Cocker, my brother's dog), Lisa (mostly Great Dane, my mother's dog), Houdini (Lisa's son by a neighborhood mastiff who was a great fence climber); Rin (my father's short-haired pointer); King Wenseslaus (sp?) (basset hound); Robbie (another Dane); Bubba (another Dane, this one a show dog, my mother's last dog, but he and I thought he was really mine). Then since I met my wife, the trend has been mostly to cats. Gatha (grey shorthaired cat), Galligaskins (large black and white shorthair); Oaxaca (black shorthaired cat), Muppie (Shitzu [I swore I would never be caught dead with a toy dog, but then my wife insisted I go to the pet store to see this guy]), Pharo (Abyssinian); Cattywumpus and Kittencaboodles (our current Main Coon cats). Every one of them was/is unique and had/has a special place in my life. I still miss every one. One fond memory - we lived in Paraguay where our house, like most, was in a fenced/walled-in yard. When repairmen etc. came through the front gate Blackie and Houdini would pull a two-pronged attack. Houdini, all 120 lbs of him, would come rushing around the corner of the house barking madly. We would hurriedly assure the visitors that he was nothing but bluff. Then Blackie would come around the corner, wagging not just her tail but her whole body. Watch out we would warn. They would ignore us, lean down to pet the cute friendly dog, and she would bite them on the hand or leg. Re: LAX trip: worth carrying the camera bag?
The beach front and pier at Marina del Rey have possibilities as does the marina itself. When I was there most recently, in January, I had my Optio 555 with me but left it in the hotel room and missed a couple of evening shots of fishermen on the pier... I wouldn't take a full bag, but a single body with 16-45 or 16-50 or 20-35 could be worth it... The taxi ride to Marina would be worth it just to get to an interesting restaurant (in contrast to the plastic hotel restaurants in the Century Blvd. area). I don't recall the name, but as you walk down the main street towards the pier, on the left toward the end is a nice Italian place. On the other side of the marina (south end, other side of the inlet) there are several good places on the right side near the end of the road before the Coast Guard station. Note - this is about a two-mile walk from the old area around the pier because you have to circle inland around the whole marina area. stan On Mar 29, 2008, at 11:55 AM, Rick Womer wrote: I have a trip next week to a meeting in the luxurious LAX Marriott. Re: Long macro lens
Barry - Pentax forte for some time was macro lenses. Lots of other good glass, but macro seemed to be an area where they really did things just right to get a superior product. (Others would argue that their 77-85 range is equally good; I would have a hard time disputing that claim. The 50mm lenses have been another special niche.) I have had substantial experience with the M (or was it A?) 50/4.0 and the A 50/2.8. And the M 100/4.0, and the A 100/2.8, and FA100/2.8 and the DA 100/2.8. And the FA* 200/4. Not many of the later were produced, those of us who own them are not likely to let them go. But if you should find one available, run, do not walk, to the nearest bank to arrange a third mortgage, or sell your car, or otherwise rearrange your finances as needed to be able to buy it. Any of the 100mm plus 2x should also do the trick, but you will degrade the image somewhat. Any of the 200 or 300mm lenses, with a short tube to bring the close focus point nearer will do ok, but you won't get the Pentax macro quality and you will lose autofocus. I think the most realistic option is to go for the DA 100/2.8 which is on the market and will give good results. (If you can live with manual focus, my A 100/2.8 is on my to-be-sold list. If a DA* 200 came along I might let go of the FA*, but for now it is on my to-be-buried-with-me list.) stan On Apr 22, 2008, at 5:48 PM, Barry Rice wrote: Hey Folks, My wife is becoming increasingly interested in photography of flighty, skittish, and sometimes dangerous animals, such as butterflies, reptiles, and snakes. Re: K10D v Lightroom exposure and histograms
To amplify just a bit on Godder's reply... If you shoot a few frames as RAW+JPEG and then import them into LR, it is easy to see at a glance which are the JPEG (lighter) and which are the RAW (darker). I was reminded of this last night while scrolling through way too many thumbnails to try and find a shot of my mother-in-law that my wife needed ASAP... (Don't anybody mention Keywords to me. I know all about them and sometimes even use them. Just not on shots that I have any reason to look for later.) I came across a bunch of duplicate shots, with one version lighter than the other. It took my work- and wine-befuddled mind a while before I realized that they were from the brief era when I was doing the RAW +JPEG thing. (Don't ask why, I haven't a clue. It must have seemed like a good idea at the time.) The camera does its magic processing of RAW to JPEG, saves the result and/or puts a small version of it on the LCD for you to view. And uses that JPEG version as the basis for its scene analysis which yields the histogram. You need to do that processing yourself with the RAW output. Which I usually find usually involves adding some exposure or fill-lighting. This was true with the *ist-D as well as the K10D. stan On Apr 30, 2008, at 7:34 PM, Rick Womer wrote: =Why= am I asking this question, just four days from my K10D's first birthday and the expiry of its warranty? Anyway... I've been looking at the histogram on the camera more lately, and noticed that it usually does not correspond to the histogram in Lightroom. So, I set the camera according to Godfrey's recommendations of several months ago. Not much help: in BW, the image on the camera's LCD and histogram is about 1 stop brighter than the image and histogram that Lightroom gives me. In color, there is more variation, with the histogram (and the blinkies) 0.5 to 1.25 stops brighter than Lightroom. This is something I can live with (rather than part with my camera for two weeks, and $150!), but I'm curious about whether it is typical or correctable, either in LR or in the camera. Re: GESO- Venice
Thanks Christine (and others who have commented.) It is probably going to be a couple of weeks before I can comment on how well the book comes out. I'll be out of town most of the coming week, even if it comes by the time I get back home, I'll be too busy sorting/packing for the following week's trip to Costa Rica. My calibration approach is quite crude. I have an iMac with nice bright LCD monitor. I have an Epson printer that I seldom use, but my wife needed something printed in color a few weeks ago so I put in new cartridges and did not only her job but also printed a few of my photos. I discovered (rediscovered) that images that look right on my nice bright screen look too dark on paper. So I adjusted my monitor to a lower intensity, increased exposure on the images (.66-1.0 stops) to get them bright enough on the darker screen, and then was able to get decent prints on the Epson. I used the same approach with the images Blurb will be printing in the book. We'll see... For what it is worth, when I look at the pdf preview of my book vs. previews of others' books, the images on screen seem comparable, so I think I will be at least fairly close. stan On May 30, 2008, at 10:16 AM, Christine Aguila wrote: Stan: Ah, Venice: love, music, art, culture, romance, great food-- and laundry? ;-) Seriously, those photos are just lovely. Re: Shooting plan
Chiming in late here, still catching up after a week away... I don't think it is plagiarism (copying of ideas) so much as it is a common application of rules of composition. I don't believe I have ever seen either of the two alley shots Bob references in the second part of his note below. However, I am sure that someplace I have seen a shot of an alleyway that was mostly empty, but with one point of contrast: a walker, a child playing, a bicycle against the wall, a kitten in the patch of sun. Whenever I travel in places with narrow alleys (e.g., Stockholm, Singapore, Naples) I look for, wait for, that moment that allows me to apply the lesson of composition I learned looking at other photos like these: empty space is just empty space, no matter how interesting the architecture that surrounds it, unless there is an element of contrast to emphasize the emptiness of the space. There are probably a few hundred thousand variants of shots showing bicycles leaning against walls, but it doesn't mean that the next person who uses a bicycle against a wall is copying someone else; rather he is putting the same principles to use. As millions of photographers follow the same relatively limited rule set with a finite set of objects to photograph, a certain sameness may begin to appear. But I can appreciate the subtle differences in execution just as I can appreciate the differences between renditions of the same classical piece by three different orchestras. As I mentioned once before, I saw an exhibit in our museum this spring - don't recall the names, but the project represented was searching out the exact spots where the Masters (e.g., Weston, St. Ansel, etc.) had placed their tripods to take some of their iconic images of Yosemite, etc. One interesting mosaic showed how three of the Greats had stood in basically the same place on the edge of a Yosemite Park parking lot, many years apart, had looked down the valley, and had taken very different shots of the same scene. Subtle differences in angles, in focal length of the lens used, but essentially the same scene. And each was a unique image because of those subtle differences. If you are seeing sameness, look deeper for the subtleties that discriminate among the superficially similar images. stan On Jun 13, 2008, at 5:07 PM, Bob W wrote: On this subject of originality again, compare these 2 pictures. My wife has the DLux Leica. It is a nice camera, little shutter lag, good autofocus, good exposure calculations. But, like most modern PS cameras, no viewfinder. I know Germany had one player out for a few minutes getting face repairs, but it seemed for most of the match that Spain had more people on the field than Germany. As the TV commentator said, clearly the best team won the match. stan On Jun 29, 2008, at 6:00 PM, Bob W wrote: Hey, thanks to all. Re: OT: Next time your packing for that photo trip...
Interesting. One thing that I wonder about - my own approach to packing multiple containers has always been to split the load, to build redundancy into the system. In other words, if you lose one bag in transit, do you really want to lose all of your Remote gear? Wouldn't you rather have the Remote equipment scattered among multiple bags so that the chances are at least some will get through? This is a fundamental principle in expedition planing, where you can always assume that some loads will be lost in transit, some in customs, and some when a yak or sherpa falls off the trail and into a river. As all grandmothers everywhere used to say, don't put all of your eggs into one basket... Once you arrive on site, you can repack the bags for convenience and ready access. stan On Aug 10, 2008, at 12:46 AM, David Savage wrote: ... the missus (or mister) complains that you've packed too much: http://www.vincentlaforet.com/Gear/index.html ..show them this. Re: OT: Got my book from Blurb.com
I think my Venice book came out pretty well with Blurb. Hardcover, 10.5x8 (?), their mid-size. 40 pages or so. Then I did a 20-page softcover 7x7 of photos from a family event. 20 pages. Quality was fine, no complaints there, but a 20-page softcover is just not a very substantial package. For anything less than 40-60 pages I definitely recommend the hardcover version for gifts. You may end up that your own customers buy the competitors product instead as that product seem original and after all, the competition may have been onto something as it is worth copying. Pål, I think a major difference in the way you and I approach the likely future success of Pentax products lies with our underlying assumptions. We are both right, to a limited extent, when we (seem to) assume that: Pål: Major assumption - consumers make choices based on an evaluation of alternative products. Corollary - to be successful a new product needs to be included in the multi-product comparison, needs to be distinguishable from other products, and needs to have some feature(s) better than the competition. Stan: Major assumption - consumers do not make choices, they make purchases. Some consumers under some circumstances will do comparisons, but mostly they will look at one item and, if it feels right they will purchase that item. Corollary - to be successful, a new product needs to be noticed and assessed. For most people, that means assessing the product for what it is, not for how well it compares to something else. This is why I think the looks of the *ist-D don't matter as a comparison with other brands. What does matter is to get the camera in the hands of people who are thinking about DSLR's. Moving people from Espios or Optios is likely the easy*ist. Moving total novices might also work if an emphasis is placed on simplicity of operation with a growth path for those who would grow. Moving people from other brands is futile in the short term. It will happen here and there, with people like those you assume, and in cases where a good salesperson argues that they should consider the Pentax. To get the camera I the hands of my consumers, it needs to look like a camera, it needs to meet their expectations for what this undifferentiated product called SLR or DSLR should look like. Few want to face the ridicule of being simultaneously an ignorant beginner AND looking like an ignorant beginner. Of the total population of consumers, there is a subset that matches my assumptions, and one that matches yours. There is at least one other subset, probably very large, who will do even less analytic thinking than yo and I assume, and they will follow the rule that, all other things more or less equal, it is best to do what everyone else is doing. Help needed (longish)- Silver Limited on black body?
As some have noticed, I am in the process of revising my lens inventory. I have sold or offered for sale many of my lenses. First to go were the duplicates, then the very seldom used. Some more in the seldom used catagory still to sell. And a few in the often used category, like maybe the K85/1.8. Two reasons for going through this. Both are spelled c-a-s-h. I am not in desperate straits by any means, but some short-term cash flow issues have been and could be further alleviated by selling some of my inventory. Real soon now the cash-flow issues will be resolved, I will recover the money I have loaned from the camera account, and I will be ready to move on. I.e., to buy more. I will keep the MZ-S and, for now, my last LX. If the *ist D seems reasonable (feels good to hold, minimal shutter lag, fast write to memory, good firmware, etc.) I will get one, other wise I will wait a few months for the next generation. Meanwhile, there are two or three lenses that I think I need. The Limiteds: 77mm, 31mm and 43mm in that order. I need help. Specifically, I have a notion that the black version of these lenses would look far better on an LX, MZ-S, or *ist D than the silver version. A few days of roaming the internet has shown me that I can get the silver versions for a somewhat reasonable price, but if I were to buy the black version of the 77mm and 31mm, I would pay a total extra amount of $450. In other words, I can buy the black 77mm and 31mm, or for about the same money, I can buy the silver 77mm, 31mm and 43mm. Now, I may be able to find less expensive black versions - the chase is not yet over. But assume that I have exhausted my purchase options. Please someone send me a picture or two of a silver limited on a black body, preferably the MZ-S, so I can see how nice it looks and convince myself that I don't really need the black after all...

Do you sort and only hand the good ones back or do you give them the whole 9 yards so they know you're not holding anything back? I'm curious as this is sort of new per se to me. And besides, if you give them a whole tabletop of photos, it gives the impression that photos are cheap. And then they'll complain about the pricing... One quibble, going back to threads over the last few months reference one or two gallery shows: don't rely on yourself to be the sole editor - get someone else to help you pick the best 10-15 shots you give to the client from which they will select 6-8. Re: Help needed (longish)- Silver Limited on black body?
Cameron - you may have missed it, but the closest we have come to that set of photos is from Rob Studdard: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~geroc/02-P3032977m.JPG http://members.ozemail.com.au/~geroc/01-P3032974m.JPG Black limited lenses on a lovely LX. Not exactly the same Black as a Black MZ-S, but close enough to give me a sense of the esthetics of an all black lens on a black camera vs. Wendy's all silver lenses on a black camera vs. the black and chrome MX with a silver Limited. So far, I prefer blackchrome body + silver to black body + black, which I in turn prefer to black body + silver. Since I don't want to chrome part of my MZ-S, and I don't think I will want to chrome my istD when I get that, so it leaves the black body + black lens as the most pleasing option for me. Re: Power Zoom 28-105 Vs the new 28-105 3.2-4.5
Jim - I just checked my stash of comments that need to be integrated into the Comments site next time I upgrade... still not many comments on this lens. One or two have been positive, but I don't believe any of those had prior experience with the power zoom version so they didn't really offer a comparison. Wendy and Joe W. both reported having one but didn't say too much about it... Stan on 3/15/03 7:48 AM, James Fellows at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I currently own the older power zoom model. I am thinking of replacing it with the newer 28-105. I am planning on replacing an older PZ model camera with either an ZX-L or the new *ist (if I can use K mount lenses with out issue) and was thinking it would be nice to have a faster more compact lens to go with it. Has anybody compared the two lenses? I have checked out Stan's lens site but not much is said about the new lens. Thanks, Jim

Pentax's last decent model was the MZ-5n IMHO. Failure? Huh? It is a very solid, easy to use, accurate metering, fast focusing, etc etc... I can't give you chapter and verse of al the other cameras on the market, but I can tell you that the MZ-S is a good camera. If Pentax paid spiff to salespeople it would be the camera of the decade. I do have one niggling issue with the MZ-S, it is harder to do fill flash than with the PZ-1p (unless you buy a new flash special built for the purpose, and I don't use flash often enough to have been tempted by this option yet.)
