Funny. I just found out that automatic cache refresh actually _never_
worked in iPeng unless you do an App restart.
Yet nobody ever complained about it before - I had a suspicion but was
never sure.

So right now you have to manually flush the cache, this will be fixed
in the next release. Then iPeng will indeed refresh the cache whenever
the data on the server changes and hopefully only then

If you use iPeng 1.2.5 or newer (the current version) you can enable
Manual WOL which means iPeng will not automatically send a WOL packet
but only if you press a power button on the server.

It's in the WOL settings that you reach through the blue on the
server item.

App Store purchases are bound to the iTunes account. You can install

also, see an album by Rosanne Cash, and when I click on this I see one
track only, and this track has John Hiatt as the COMPOSER. I also see a
Nick Lowe album under John Hiatt artist listing (with one track, that of

When I look at ARTIST under SbS on the web GUI, I see only John Hiatt
albums. And in my SbS settings I do NOT have the composer, conductor,
band/orchestra boxes checked under my music.

So things work as expected in SbS GUI, but not in the Artist listing in
iPENG. Can anyone confirm this behavior? I'm using latest iPeng and
 iphone 3G (OS 4.0.2).

Edit: interesting, I also get the same behavior as with iPENG in
SqueezePlay running as the controller for my transporter on my laptop.
So both squeezeplay AND ipeng bring in composer, but SbS webGUI does
 not.

That's a known difference between the role interpretation between the

The onebrowser activity should make this the same but I don't know in
which direction.

That image comes up whenever iPeng doesn't find your player within a
few seconds. A lot of people didn't find that.

So what happens here is that iPeng obviously is having trouble finding
your player (or better: your server) in time.
What I find interesting here is that iPeng DOES indeed find the server
but no player, could it be that your Squeezebox is not connected to the
server? Do you have MySqueezebox.com working?

What exactly was the issue that made it take an hour to get iPeng to
work on the iTouch? There's one issue I'm aware off on the iTouch and
that is that it sometimes doesn't seem to connect a WiFi connection to
iPeng, in this case restarting the App or even sending it to the
background (in IOS4) and bringing it up again usually helps.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2010-08-31 Thread pippin

OK, here's what you should do:

1. When you first start iPeng your server has to be up and running and
you should have your Squeezebox connected to it. iPeng should the see
the server and the player.
2. If you want to use Wake-On-LAN to wake up the server, go to the
screen on your screen shot and press the blue on your server. Here
you can enable WOL and enter the MAC if it's not already detected
correctly.
NOTE: You have to leave that screen before quitting the App for your
changes to be saved.
3. If you use MySqueezebox.com, select that Music Source, too, on this
screen so that iPeng can get registered (you have to do this for each
iThingy) and see your players on MySB in the future.

In the future, when your start iPeng it should wake up your server. But
it can indeed take several seconds until your server is up and running
and especially until your Squeezebox is connected to the server (it
will disconnect when the server is off and also has to find the source
first).

I'm a bit surprised that your iPhone 3G is slower than the iPod, as of
my experience iPhone 3G is usually the slowest device around (it's as
fast as an older iTouch but does a lot more in the background).
However, WiFi can take a few seconds to come up on the newest
generation of the iTouch.

If you are buying a 4G iPod touch it doesn't matter. Apps can only use
up to 2GB and iPeng is even far, far away from using that.

If you plan to buy an older 3G iTouch I would take a 32 or 64 GB model
since those are actually a different generation (the 8GB was still Gen
2) and are faster.

No, it's not just you but on the other hand there are also LOTS of
people who requested this.
Main argument is that you have more space for long titles/album names
which is especially important with classical music. This has been a big
issue for classical music lovers for a long time with iPeng.

The screen saver mode has also been a frequent request since pretty
much day 1 of iPeng.

I'll consider adding a switch since I finally found a way how to do
that.

However, with iOS4 you can turn off orientation changes from the task
bar, so I'm not really sure this adds a lot of value.

Ok, my tries:
1. Could it be the Touch is connected to something else, e.g.
MySqueezebox.com? Have you ever connected iPeng to MySqueezebox.com?
You need to do that at least once to be able to see players on MySB, it
needs to be registered for your account and unless the Squeezebox
doesn't enforce this (you don't need it if you never use MySB).
2. Are you on iOS4 so that iPeng's been running for a while? If your PC
uses DHCP it could have shown up under different IP addresses. iPeng
isn't always good at resolving this and it never ever forgets a server
unless it's restarted. Try to close it from the task bar and re-open
it.
Second thought would be: Did you configure your PC manually? There migh
be a manual and an automatic instance in there.
If no you STILL see your PC twice then I'd guess you actually have two
instances of Squeezebox Server running.
3. No idea. Sorry :)

Can you elaborate some more on this? Or is it to early for that?

I would call it too early since I only have a rough idea myself about
how it would look like. There's an open ticket for it:
https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/

The rough idea I have is to disable anything that is destructive
meaning:
Play, Clear playlist, sync/unsync players, move players to different
servers.

playing an item would then open a context menu by default or the play
action simply gets removed or something like that.

Is this behaviour intentional? I thought it only sent the WOL packet at
 startup.

OK, this looks like WOL needs explaining :) Note to self: update
manual.

1. There is no both manual and automatic WOL. There is a WOL on.
This needs to be enabled to have any WOL capability. You then also need
to set a MAC, if you just switch the switch iPeng will use a WOL it
auomatically detected - if there is one.

2. If you enable WOL, the default is to permanently send WOL packets on
startup and then every 30s or so.
If you do NOT want that, there's also a manual WOL setting. If you
enable THAT one, NO WOL packets will be sent automatically. Instead,
you get a Power button on the server item in the MultiPlayer screen.
Whenever you press that power button a WOL packet is being sent.
Use this if you only want to wake up servers incidentally.

Out of interest, why the change from once at startup to continuous?

There has NEVER been once at startup... Well, not sure, at least not
for the last 12 months.
The manual option is new, which is quite similar to once at startup
with the sole exception that you can choose when to turn on the server.

once at startup is problematic:
1. It's a nuisance to stop an app under iOS4 so you typically won't
start up often. Ok, it could be once at wakeup
2. Packets do get lost.
3. Packets do especially get lost right after startup, there are still
issues with WiFi startup times especially on iTouch.

iPeng from the iPad, go to More--Extra--Server Power
 Control--Shutdown the server.

the server did shutdown, but the Touch is still running, the status bar
in the display is still moving. I did wait until that song is finished
while the server already shut down, the pointer go back to the
beginning of the song and stay there. The screen won't go to sleep
mode nor stop mode (I got different screen saver for each mode so I
know), it just stay there, with the album art and the details of the
 song.

 Any hint?

Ok. That's what happens if I shut down my server, too.
Did you configure SvrPowerControl to do something different? Sorry to
be dense but I don't use that plugin (can't get it to work) and so I
don't exactly understand what you expect to happen.
iPeng doesn't do anything but send a command to the server.
That command is already being created by the plugin.
But more importantly: from what I see the command is successful (the
server shuts down), the difference seems to be in the behavior of the
plugin itself.
The only way iPeng could affect this is by changing any parameters etc.
But I don't think I made changed to the parameter handling in 1.2.7.

I'll see whether Gordon can help out with an idea.

As I said: you have to play something first. SqueezeCast becomes

I did already talk to the author about it, hopefully he'll find a fix.
It disappears because it doesn't respond. The server only notices this
when it tries to communicate to SC (or after a timeout).

Play something from SC and you can then control it from iPeng.

If I control squeezecast via squeezecenter website all is fine.

not if you put it in the background.

disappoint for a $10 app. It occurred to me to look here for support,
 glad I did...

Thanks for letting me know. Looks like my provider rebooted the server
without letting me know. It's back up again.

 2) there seem to be significant problems with the Rhapsody
 integration:
 a) when I try to play a Rhapsody album, the only option it gives me is
to play the album as shuffled. When I click on this, it plays the
album in the album order, not shuffled

What happens if you tap the first track? Did you read Help-Quick
Tutorials-Albums/Playlists in the App? (It's the popup that comes up
automatically when you open an album the first time).
This works like on the iPod app, you have to simply tap the track to
use.

Shuffling generally doesn't work on Rhapsody, it's not an iPeng issue
but a MySqueezebox.com issue

 b) Once a Rhapsody album is playing, it appears to be impossible to add
other Rhapsody songs or albums to the current play list

No, THAT works, at least for me. Again, have you read the tutorial I
mentioned above?

 c) When a Rhapsody album is playing and I try to play one of the
pre-configured Rhapsody play lists, they don't play at all. Instead the
album I was already listening to continues to play.

This works for me, albeit the menu is a bit weired, you have to select
play playlist(1) in Play mode... Again, have a look at that
tutorial.

 3) there are some minor problems with the Slacker intgeration
 a) it does not appear to be the case that you can heart or thumbs
down Slacker songs even though one can with the web user interface.

Of course you can. It's on the NowPlaying overlay that you get when
tapping the big cover. It's like on the Web interface, the icons
replace the shuffle and repeat icons which in turn are placed where
they are on the iPod app...
You can also use the context menu (hold the big cover art). There's
also a tutorial about context menus in Help in the app, that one did
also show up automatically.

iPeng is a promising app - but nearly all of my listening is on
Rhapsody and Slacker. Thus, these problems render the app not very
useful to me. And it is frustrating that there is no obvious support
web site. Free is free, but if I'm paying 10x as much as the average
app store app, I expect commercial quality software that works as
advertised. I am curious if any of these things will be
 fixed...thanks.
All of them are working now :)
Sorry for the inconvenience about the web site.

If you can add single tracks to a playlist in Rhapsody through the web

I'll do that right after iPeng for iPad in on the way, aka next
week.
There's a little dilemma in there since there are a few more smaller
bugs to be fixed and I also did some improvements to the core like
better artwork loading and stuff.

All of this is done in the iPeng for iPad code base but that currently
doesn't run on iPhone so I would have to back-port all this. It would
be the better product but I don't know how long it would take.

I'll probably look at it next week and if I can get the porting done in
a reasonable time I'll do that and if not I'll just fix 1.2.7

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Sonos iPad app (free)

2010-09-29 Thread pippin

Maybe I should elaborate.
I'm serious about this.
I also don't say iPeng is better. The two apps are different in some
respects and to a certain degree they reflect the different systems
they are made for.
The Sonos app may be a bit more simple to understand in the first place
and multiple-player handling may still have an edge but there are also
aspects where it completely sucks such as playlist building and digging
through your library (you have to re-start again each time you need to
go to NowPlaying). It also has a very deep menu structure.
Graphics is also not really a strong point of the Sonos app, the covers
you gat are tiny.

I'm particularly disappointed about the iPad version, they make very
bad use of the screen space, IMHO, but that may be a personal taste
thing, I think similarly about SqueezePad in that respect.

No

Or perhaps would there be way to turn the screen lock off only when the

No again... Well, I'm not 100% sure, the iPod itself might have an

Is it more faster on 4G, do you implement new functionalities for the
 4G ?
I ask this urgently, because the promotion is until today.

iPeng currently works on the older one as well.
It will not support multitasking so you can't keep iPeng in the
background but have to quit and re-start if you want to do something
else.

If you want to use another app for playback on the iPod (you currently
can't do that with iPeng although it's planned) you can't keep that one
running in the background, too.

I can't really tell you what future limitations, this will mainly
depend on how Apple supports these devices. Right now, iPeng requires
iOS 3.0 (the iPod software version) but will eventually move to 4.x.
The 2G iPod also supports 4.0 so for now you are pretty safe but I
would not bet on Apple still supporting it with a 5.0 next year. So I
believe you are safe to still get updates for about a year with the
older device.

iPeng is a bit faster on the new device, too (3s startup time as
compared to 5-6s on the older device), scrolling is faster and
smoother, too, abut the actual operation should not differ too much,
that depends more on the server.

4G has a higher resolution screen.

Can I use the Ipod+Ipeng like the SqueezeTouch : if I connect the Ipod
to a active speaker, can I ear the music ?

Yes but as of today not with iPeng. There are two other Apps
(SqueezeCast and SqueezeMobile) and you can also just use the
mp3-stream from the server by opening it in the browser.

Is it easy to develop program for Ipod ?

Yes and no. You have to learn Objective-C and you need to learn Apple's
software architecture. When you've done so it's pretty simple because
the API is very powerful.

I live in belgium : where can I buy this application ?

On the device itself. You'll need an iTunes account.

7.4 is fine (although I believe 7.5 works more stable in general) I
even recently re-added the workaround for playing radio items with
incomplete context menus that is needed pre-7.5.1.
I will not test against 7.3.x anymore, this is especially true for
iPeng for iPad. I have at least one beta tester who still uses 7.3.3
and he generally provides good feedback so I believe it runs but I am
pretty sure at least the Apps/Music Services will work less well with
7.3.3.

iPeng supports multitasking in two ways: it loads your data in the
background and it supports fast app switching meaning the app doesn't
quit when you leave it but is just being suspended and continues to run
from the same place if you return to it.

If you use other apps (e.g. for streaming) these can run in the
background while iPeng is running.

Artists? That's strange. If it were the albums...

Do you use McAfee? In any case, have you tried to exclude *.MYI files

Which server version is this?
Do you have any artists with strange looking names between the first
200 or 300 (sorry) artists in your library? Foreign characters should
generally be OK, control codes can cause trouble.

Oh, and are you sure your server had finished scanning when you flushed
the cache in iPeng the last time?

Is No server found all it says? No MySqueezebox.com? No other

 iPeng.

Also, when restarting (only if you have iOS4 or newer), have you made
sure you _really_ restart the app? As in: Closing it from the task bar
 and restarting it?

Re-Downloading from the App Store isn't really helpful here. There is
an issue that when iPeng is first being started it often doesn't seem
to get any network connection (it can't open any sockets). I have no
idea why that is, the OS doesn't seem to connect the network devices.
This usually goes away on the second start but until you re-start it
iPeng will remember the network configuration, in your case: no
 network.
I am currently trying to change this but it's a bit tricky.

My wireless network is obviously working ok otherwise the Transporter
would not work, and I can use my iPhone on the wireless network too,
just can't get iPeng to work!!!

There is no the network works correctly. Problems always happen
with single devices on a network, you can't judge from the fact that
another device works. It's usually all software.

Two things.

1. What you described does NOT restart an app under iOS4. You need to
doubleclick the front button to go to the task bar, hold the app you
want to close until it wobbles and then press the -.

2. Could it be that your router assigned IP addresses of a different
subnet to your iThingies? In that case server autodetection doesn't
work. You can check for this e.g. by adding the server address
manually.

Likewise, when I click on an Album, the only headline I see is Add
 all--I do not see random.

Then you have probably selected Play single Tracks in iPeng's
settings and you have disabled Play other tracks in album in the
server's settings.
In this case, iPeng needs that headline item for the option to play all
tracks and can't display the play shuffled item.

BTW, this is not random, this will play exactly that album or playlist,
it will just enable the shuffle feature of the player.

Finally, when in Playing mode, clicking on the random button beside the
track position doesn't do anything... no change to the order or what
 track is played next.

That isn't supposed to do anything. It's just an indicator that this
item will shuffle your playlist.
Yet didn't you say you don't _have_ that item???

The whole item works like the play shuffled feature in the iPod App
on the iPhone. That one looks different now (it looked similar to
iPeng's until iOS 3.1.3; now it has a button instead of a row) but
still works in the same way.

Have ou tried to manually switch to MySB?
If you don't see MySB on the players page you iPhone doesn't have an
internet connection or didn't have one when you started it - in this
case you need to re-start the app (by closing it through the task bar
and repoening it).

Then what DO you see if you open an Album?
Could you do a screen shot?
Are you using CustomBrowse?
You talk about SqueezeCenter, which version is this?
And for the last one: cycling these shuffle icons should really
rearrange your playlist, how big is your playlist?

Add all would mean you are not in play mode.
You can do a screen shot simply be holding one button and pressing the
other one, too. It's in your photo library then and you can email it.

iPeng doesn't switch players on it's own unless the one you are

What exactly are you doing? Are you sure you've been controlling the
Touch and not the Receiver when you started out?
How did you start WiMP if you could not browse it?

I need to run one beta round on it because I also migrated a number of
things from iPeng for iPad, e.g. the artwork loading.
Also, there's another issue I need to fix which is that if you start
the App when manually configured servers or MySB are not reachable you
have to re-start the App. Since it looks like a significant number of
users doesn't know how to restart an App under iOS4 this needs fixing.

Could you do sreen shots of the NowPlaying screen and what you see

The version fixing these two issues is currently beta testing and I will
probably submit it to the App Store today.
Is the Radio Time issue still present in 7.5.1? Most RT menus are fixed
in that release.

Try it. It's only with the ipeng remote. Thanks.

I know what it is. I've explained it at least a dozen times here:
iPeng does NOT do Touch-To-Play, unless SqueezePlay. This is because
too many people are having trouble with accidentally deleting a
playlist.
Instead, iPeng opens a context menu which, for playable items like this
one, is expected to include Play, Add, Add Next items. However, for
RadioTime items - and only these - it doesn't.
What iPeng did in the past is that it added the items manually.
However, I removed this someone earlier this year because the
underlying bug was reported as fixed and for most menus it actually is.
For RadioTime only in 7.5.1.
It turned out, this is not true in all cases which is why I'll add that
back in the next release. The reason for removing the manually added
items is that there is a theoretical risk that this leads to duplicate
items.
