Re: music on cable tv
The bluegrass segment of the bifurcated "American Originals" station, which itself is one of 31 stations on "Music Choice," is pretty impressive, with a nice mix of classic bluegrass and newgrass, or whatever it's called these days. The Big Band and Blues stations also delve into both obscurities and more classic type stuff. Haven't checked out the "progressive" and "alternative rock" stations yet, and am not sure what's the difference. As for the classic country station, I tuned in last night, and as David Cantwell had mentioned, did catch a really nice flow of great tunes, including Del Reeves (Southern Belles of Southern Bell), Buck Owens (Waiting in Your Welfare Line), Merle (Fightin' Side of Me), Patsy Cline (San Antonio Rose), Gene Watson (You're out there doin what I'd like to be doin at home, or something along those lines), and more, until I had to make the switch to AE's incredible mini-series based on C.S. Forester's Hornblower books. -- Terry Smith np Doug Sahm's "Jukebox Music."
radio sweeps underway, intersting TV ad
Just saw an ad for the new country radio station in Richmond, VA "The River" and they segued from Alan Jackson Tall Tall Trees to "He Stopped loving Her Today". This isn't a renegade operation either, it's owned by a very successful black radio entrepreneur who saw a hole in the market and is going after the HNC station that's been the 25-54 leader for years but has recently dropped substantially. While the HNC throws money at the listeners "The River" is throwing real country at the listeners. Shania and music on cable tv
Two things: Watched a bio on Shania on VH-1, and I'll confess some embarrassment at demonizing the gal -- holding her out as an example of all that's rotten about commercial country. She seems like a fairly straightforward working-class girl, who parlayed (to my ears, at least) modest talent into superstar status. I still don't like her music very much, but if I'm gonna play the blame game, then it belongs with the usual culprit, the triumph of marketing over substance, or the other usual culprit, there's no accounting for taste, mine or yours. I finally snagged that cable TV music service, where you get 31 different musical genre selections. I wanted it mainly to have access to "classic country." But lo and behold, classic country these days isn't what it used to be (since the word "classic" in terms of music changes over time). Anyhow, during the half-hour I was listening, the station played such classics as 80s vintage Oak Ridge Boys, Gary Morris, Ronny McDowell, and Alabama. So my dreams of a station that only plays Tammy, George, Buck, Loretta, Merle -- or Hank, Ray, Johnny, and Hank -- went up in smoke. I switched to the blues station, which was just dandy. -- Terry Smith
Re: Shania and music on cable tv
We have Music Choice here in KC, Terry, and if your set up's the same or similar, the definition of classic changes throughout the day. I tend to listen weekend mornings, if the Batman/Superman Adventures and Batman Beyond are reruns, and on Sat morns it's pretty much what you describe, but on Sun's it's your dream station. Of course, even that changes as the hours pass... --david cantwell 11:43 PM 4/7/99 -0400, you wrote: I finally snagged that cable TV music service, where you get 31 different musical genre selections. Re: Lucinda on TV
Other tv note -- Blondie was pretty great on Leno last night. Debbie sounded good, but (drummer) Clem Burke was awesome. You know, I can't stand Clem Burke. When he joined the Plimsouls a few years back, he annoyed the hell out of me during live performances, playing with an over-the-top presence that just pleaded "look at me, look at me." A complete distraction, antics I hadn't seen since the stick-twirlers of Sunset Strip circa late-80s. Yuck. Plus, I think he's just overrated as a drummer. Of course, I am biased. As the story goes, a buddy of mine was supposed to get the gig. He was even told by Case and all that he was the better of the drummers, but that Clem had the star power. Sad when the Plimsouls, one of my favorite bands of the 80s, are stooping to that. Besides, I still think Case should stick to his wonderful solo career. When he goes back to the Plimsouls, I can't help but feel that his best talents are being compromised in order to dabble and rekindle his past. Of course, I'll still see the Plimsouls, with or without Burke, any day of the week. Neal Weiss

Out of curiosity, who else was in Blondie last night, besides Harry, Stein, and Burke. Did they have that tall woman on bass that was playing with them when they first reformed a couple of years ago (hooweee!!! g)? Or who? Just wondering --junior ps. Neal, I like Burke pretty well. Yes his drumming is exhibitionistic and so on, but it's a certain style and I think he does it well. I do agree, however, that Case should stick to the solo career. The reunited Plimsouls were fun, but more in a nostalgic sense than as a real band with forward creative energy. After the show I saw on that tour with Burke, Case told me with a straight face that he was doing it "to put my son through grad school" g

Rob Thomas always peppers his novels with interesting and un-obvious music references, so it's a good bet that he's the source of any good music on the show. --Amy

Question about TV bands
Junior here, with a query for all of you: I got a call this morning from someone who's looking to do some short interviews with people who know (or think they know, or are just interested in, fascinated by, etc.) "TV rock bands." That is, bands like the Monkees, Partridge Family, Josie and the Pussycats (or whatever their name was) or whoever, whose base was essentially television (as opposed to a "real" band whose base would be in the music industry in one way or another). So, if you'd like a little air time g and have knowledge of this subject, write me offlist at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm just guessing, but: Neal? Bill Silvers? Cheryl? Come out of the closet, all you TV hounds!! g Thanks, --junior

Didn't the Flintstones have a Pebbles Bamm-Bamm offshoot where the kids sang in a band? Scooby-Doo - classic era - had the song breaks during chase scenes, but Fred and Daphne never sang, so never mind. The Bugaloos! How could I forget? Excerpts from internet.listserv.postcard2: 26-Jan-99 Re: Question about "TV bands" by [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Bill is also allowed to speak on Jamie whatshisname's solo career on 90210) I think his name is Jamie Walters. All I know about his solo career is that he covered Graham Parker's "Release Me". I can't think of any other covers of one of Parker's recent songs; Marty Jones's "You Can't Take Love for Granted" is the only one that comes to mind, and Parker's version was released over fifteen years ago. C'mon you people, that's not deep enough: Charlie Chan and the Chan Clan - cartoon in which the detective's children had a rock band. Played an Archies-styled song at the end of every show. Banana Splits - The Sovines, Jamie Swedberg and I had a big conversation on this one Sat. morning after our show. Groovie Ghoulies - CBS cartoon with the hippie wolfman, a pinoff from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Hey, what about Happy Days? Richie, Potsy and Ralph had a combo with varying drummers (pudgy gang member, high school majorette, hip black guy among others). Speaking of which, probably my favorite TV band of them all (many of you know this about me), Lenny and the Squigtones from Laverne Shirley. (BTW, they put out an album, and I would kill to get a copy of it). The Brady Bunch had that album, remember when Peter's voice changed and creative Greg re-wrote a song around it? Odd Couple? Felix wants to get in good with Jaye P. Morgan (who happens to be dating Oscar), so he forms a band around his song. I Dream of Jeannie - Wanting Major Nelson to be rich and successful, Jeannie makes him a manager of a rock band that she creates. F Troop - A Beatles ripp-off in the 1870s (is that possible?) comes to Fort Courage, and Corporal Agarn (Larry Storch) chooses to manage them. Gilligan's Island - Who could forget The Mosquitos (Bingo, Bongo, Bungo, and Irving) arriving on the island, only to leave because of the competition from the new girl group with Ginger, Maryanne, and Mrs. Howell. I can't help it...McHale's Navy TV-Rock Fluff
I just remembered one of the weirdest TV-rock moments I ever experienced -- even weirder than ANY Shatner spoken-word thang (which, though I missed his latest, are guaranteed to be pretty darn weird). Anyway. There used to be this late-night TV show called "Night Flight", which started out by running old movies and music videos, and ended up, last I saw of it, by running cut-up pieces of old movies and videos together -- weird TV in and of itself. Well, one night, probably about 2 or 3 a.m., I was watching "Night Flight" while simultaneously reading a novel, listening to music on the stereo, and drinking coffee laced with bourbon. I'd do this on Friday nights sometimes. Lynn My Spouse was out with his buddies playing cutthroat double-rapid transit chess, you see, and I'd wait up for him, mostly as an excuse to vege out in the above manner. So, as I said, 'long about the early a.m., I look up from my book and see the cast of McHale's Navy lined up on the ship's, er, front end the way they'd do for the opening credits of the TV show. Wow, I think nostalgically, I haven't seen that show in long time. So, I turn up the sound. And what I hear, instead of the show's theme song, is... "mm poppa oom mow mow, poppa oom mow mow" *Cuh-lunk* went my jaw on the floor. It was like American Bandstand got mixed up with the Twilight Zone and produced this a capella band called McHale the Navies. And boy, they went at it! They started out kind sedate then got more and more animated, Borgnine slapping his hand on the, er, prow? and all of them starting to *get down* -- BUT -- all the while keeping the most serious deadpan expressions you ever saw. It was hilarious! It was sublime! Obviously it was an outtake they did in an odd (very odd!) moment... And if ANYONE here knows where I can get my hands on a copy of this, please share this information. --Cheryl Cline

The Josie and the Pussycats lineup of vocal talent included my favorite Angel, Cheryl Ladd (who I was praising recently on the fluff channel).
