Hi Richard,

I've put a fantastic freeware application up on my website that can
convert many different units of measurement. It's runtime, so you don't
need to actually install it. You can download it at the following URL...

Hi Phil,

Under the pressure tab, you can convert kg/cm^2 to lb/ft^2.
Since kg/cm^2 is g/m^2, multiply the result by 16, and you have oz/ft^2

I have an Excel spreadsheet that I can post as well that does a couple
of other things for electric fliers and wing loading.

   Dan

Phil Barnes wrote:

That's the same one that Dan Kitching recommended. Can anybody tell me
how you use that to convert g/dm^2 to oz/ft^2? I guess you need to use
the custom feature but clicking on custom gets a blank window with
no instructions and no apparent way to type anything into the window.

Click on options at the top of the window, then click on
preferences. Then click on custom. You type the conversion into
that window and then when you click on custom on the regular menu
you will see the custom conversions that you have typed in.

The conversions that you need for the question that Rich asked about are;

1 gram per decimeter squared = .327123 ounces per foot squared

1 decimeter squared = 15.50003 inches squared

I already knew how to do the conversions manually as evidenced by my
earlier post reprinted below:

81.7 square decimeters = 1266 square inches.

36.7 grams per square decimeter = 12.0 ounces per square foot.

Eventually I want to figure the wing loading at different all up
weights .

1266 square inches = 8.79 square feet.

12 ounces per square foot multiplied by 8.79 square feet = 105 ounces.

The manufacturer must be assuming 105 ounces to get their listed wing
loading.

To check wing loadings for different weights you just need to divide your
weight in ounces by 8.79 square feet to get your wing loading in
ounces per

square foot.

Re: [RCSE] Shipping to Canada - WAS: Vender Disappointment

2006-01-09 Thread Dan Kitching
Oh yeah, all the rules. Address must me in caps, and contents must be
listed on the way bill.
Once the package crosses the border, tracking no longer works day by
day, but it's then only matter of a day or two. The tracking# will let
you know that the package has been delivered.

Sorry I'm getting steamed about this, but it's infuriating to attempt to
spend money at a retailer in the US only to be told they don't ship to
Canada because it's too problematic. It's pure laziness. Refusal to
address the label in caps, and a lack of willingness to spend an extra 2
minutes at the post office to fill out a way bill. Other than that, it's
exactly the same. If you state the weight, dimensions, and contents
accurately, there should never be any issues. When I see people publicly
posting about how problematic it is to ship to Canada, it means to me
that there are now 1 or 2 more people on this list that will take that
to heart and be unwilling to ship north in the future.

I've been buying hobby stuff from retailers and private people the US
for over 5 years and have never had a shipment go awry, not once.

Ed Berris wrote:

Dan Mailing to Canada is not as easy as you suggest because the Canadian
customs or mail service seems to have a strong desire to screw with US

to Canada because of this. Delays are not uncommon. Tracing a package is
nearly impossible once it leaves the US. Packages are returned for minute
infractions on Canadian rules.

When I ship to Canada I inform my customers that once it leaves my hands I
assume no responsibility for the safe arrival of the package. If that is
not acceptable to a customer (and I can understand why it might not be) I
just won't take the chance. I'd rather not have the business or an unhappy
customer.

Re: [RCSE] A good reason that 6 cells aren't necessary anymore

2005-12-29 Thread Dan Kitching

Hope you knocked on wood while writing that Bill:)

Fact is, lots of folks have killed servos when running higher voltage
packs and lots of folks have used them for ages with no problems. Take
your pick and go with it, but a voltage regulator to keep things at 6V
is not a BAD idea, it may not be totally necessary but it's not hurting
anything being there other than being another link in the chain.

Then again, modern (fast and strong) digital servos don't require the
extra zip of 6 volts anyway. Years ago when all this started, the servos
weren't anywhere near the performers that modern servos are, and they
were all analog. Today's high capacity batteries also suffer very little
voltage drop under a 4-6 servo load.

Bill's Email wrote:

A voltage regulator insures that your digital servos and RX don't get
too much of a good thing,

Every digital servo that I am aware of, and I run most of them from
JR281's to 8611's and Futaba 9252's, CAN take 6 volts without a
problem. Old wives tale. 7.2 volts is a different thing. But I love
this myth about needing a regulator with 5-cell packs.

I have run 5-cell packs (Nicad NiMH) in everything from D/HLG to
molded TD to helis to 40% giant scale aerobatic planes for several
years, ALL with digitals of various sizes, with not a single problem.
Run a regulator if it makes you feel better, but it is totally
unnecessary. And even in my big aerobatic planes I cannot tell the
difference between flight #1 and #5 (when I charge).

The very worst thing that you may observe is a slight jitter when
you first turn on. Lasts about 15 seconds as the surface charge goes
away.

And to the point about stalling, etc. causing a need for a regulator.
Sorry, the regulator does nothing there. A stalled servo pulls what a
stalled servo pulls, irrespective of a regulator. Most OEM plugs are
rated at 3 amps continuos (means no real rise in temp at that
amperage) which is well below the full stall current for most glider
digitals, and right at stall current for say an 8611 or 9252.

Hi all,

I have an unused motor, ESC, and LiPo packs that I'm not going to be
using. Perfect for 50-60 sized helis or 40-60 sized aircraft.

Plettenberg HP-300/40/A3-S heli motor (not used beyond a bench test)
Schulze Future 32.55 ESC (heat sink added, not used beyond a bench test)
2x 5S2P Tanic LiPo packs. Combine for 5S2P (8800mAh) or 10S2P (4400mAh).
These packs are rated for 10C discharge rate. I'd trust 'em for 8S
continuous.
I've put connectors on these packs, and nothing else has been done
with them.

Combined new price is over US$1100.

I'd like to trade for a spotless, like new glider. Please no damaged,
battle weary sailplanes, I'd like to trade for a nice plane that I can
fly for a few years (barring a dumb thumb).

Anyone have an extra biggie they'd like to trade?

That's not what I heard from the editor of the mag. I heard that the
AMA received numerous letters from members that were tired of seeing
an entire issue about competition. There is a similar issue with
members not liking the AMA facilities and grounds being used for an
entire month for competition which they supposedly received letters
about. So a number of days was cut from Nats this year.

So in one year we almost lost a day at Nats, but shifted to starting
on Friday to keep all the dates and we have lost the magazine
coverage for the Nats.

It seems a growing number of modelers are not interested in contest

I think that's unfortunate because that's my favorite part about

Re: [RCSE] 12V Bench Power Supply

2005-09-02 Thread Dan Kitching
I'm using a converted ATX power supply as well and it's great, with one
exception. My Orbit Pro charger has a power switch, and when I turn it
on the power supply shuts down. I've never opened it up, but imagine it
might have a largish capacitor that sucks a largish amount of current
when first turned on. Maybe the power supply sees this current and shuts
off to protect itself.

Weird, but my other chargers, including a GP Triton work great on this
power supply.

David Register wrote:

of his own. He found a really good deal which I've converted and it
works very well. In our area, used PC supplies are getting harder to
find (for free) and it pains me to pay $20 for a used supply.

This conversion is very easy (see Red's Battery Clinic article at
http://www.rcbatteryclinic.com/) and follows the ATX conversion with
the exception that you only need to ground the PS-On wire to make the
supply work properly. No need for the 'Power Good' line. On this one
the PS-On wire was green on the motherboard connector but it's clearly
marked on the circuit board inside the case.

Supply is a 250W unit from Tiger Direct. Cost is $15 +S/H. Add a
couple of bucks and a little sawing on the case to fit a banana plug
receptacle, clip and shield a few wires and you're done. I've been
running this one for a few days on GP, Sirius AstroFlight and FMA
chargers for NICd, NiMH and LiPos (Tx, Rx and motor packs) with no
problems. Haven't pushed current too hard (couple of amps) but the
supply is rated for 10A so it will probably deliver 8 or so.

Just FYI for those looking for an easy way to get 12V bench power for
your field chargers.

[RCSE] Victory C - Looking for ballpark CG and control throws.

2005-08-26 Thread Dan Kitching

Hi all,

Sheldon has loaned me his bagged wing Victory C and it's ready to go,
except for CG and control throws.
Does anyone have one of these flying, I'm looking for a close CG to
start with before I fling it at the sky.

The tow hook on this one is not adjustable, and is already installed, so
I'd like to get the CG close.

Re: [RCSE] soaring issues - I now understand

2005-08-14 Thread DAN KITCHING
I'm beginning to understand the addiction to thermal
hunting and I'd like to place the blame where it
belongs, squarely on the shoulders of my good friend
Sheldon Smith.

I've always appreciated soaring, but was truly hooked
after putting a 42 minute flight on my Ariane V6 a
while ago. Folks, this is a 1.66 meter F5B plane that
weighs 60oz all up. Of course, it climbs at over
100km/h, but it WILL NOT thermal in a fart. It took a
boomer day, but now I'm doing less climbing and diving
than climbing and soaring and I'm realizing more and
more that boomers are not necessary to climb, but
smooth circling and energy retention will allow me to
thermal in moderate conditions.

I'm starting in earnest today on a Genie Pro. Winston
was kind enough to clue me in on the section changes
he made for this wing as opposed to the Genie and
Genie LT/S, and the foam cutter is primed and ready
for action.

Look out JB, I think I might just attend the NATS next
year with Sheldon. Looking forward to comparing tunes
collections on our iPods.

I have never shot down another pilot, but have seen it happen. Nobody
goes home feeling good about the hobby when that happens. Please be
careful with your synth transmitters folks, with power comes
responsibilities.

Other than Multiplex, who have had scanning addons for the Profi's for
years now (they won't transmit unless the channel is quiet), the other
manufacturers do have some catching up to do.

I plan to purchase one of JR's synth modules for my 9303 when they're
available, and realize that I'll have to be careful in it's use if I
ever need to change channels. Mainly it will remain on ch.58 90% of the
time. I'm lucky enough to share that channel with only one other flyer
in my club who shows up maybe 6 times a year. On the days that he comes
out (or at funflys), I'll change channels but realize that I must be
mindful of what I'm doing.

Hi Dave,

Use a light bulb or similar to drain the cell(s) down to zero voltage.
Leave the load on there for some time to make sure the cell is truly
empty. Once that's done, puncture the plastic envelope in a few places
and soak them in very salty water for a day or so. Then you can just

Would anyone in the group know if the JR base loaded whip antenna would work
with six meter frequencies? I've got a 9303 but I've always been used to
using a more compact rubber duck antenna on my transmitters. I would want
to get the JR whip antenna but would want to confirm that it will be
compatible with six meters.

BTW, does anyone in the group also know how to setup a hotliner on the 9303
(sailplane version). The manual is kind of vague in this respect and I
truly would appreciate some help from the knowledgeable people here in the
group.

[RCSE] JR XP8103 for sail

2005-04-21 Thread Dan Kitching
Hi all,
I have a JR 8103dt on channel 58 for sail. It's the aircraft version
with digital trims, and comes with a large 2100mAh pack installed. I've
decided to make the move to a 9303 and as much as I'd like to keep this
one as a backup, it's not going to happen.

I've had it for a little over a year and it's in terrific condition. No
dings, gouges, stains, growths, lumps, extra appendages, broken bones,
cracked ribs, bruises or flesh wounds. No mods. This radio is, and
always was box stock except for the larger battery pack.

$225 gets it shipped to your door (US or Canada) insured in a JR box.
Thanks for the bandwidth

Re: [RCSE] Replacement switch for JR 8103

2005-04-05 Thread Dan Kitching
Thanks Tom,
I went with the On-Mom switch as I don't anticipate needing camber AND
landing settings anytime soon. I wanted the momentary switch to avoid
the possibility of bumping the throttle switch to on and having it stay
there. I like idea of a 16 carbon prop at 8000rpm shutting itself off
if I'm not actively telling it to be on. :)

Thanks
   Dan

Dan,
The stock gear switch on the 8103 is a single pole, double throw
(SPDT) model. You have a couple of different options.

You can use an ON-MOM (ON or MOMENTARY), but in the case of a glider
setup using the same switch (CROW or Butterfly switch), you will
either lose variable camber on the flap stick or landing mode
depending on the settings in the Butterfly menu.

If this works for you, then you can order a switch that looks VERY
similar to the stock JR switch, but is better quality. Oh, and it
won't look like a high school shop project ;-). The part number from
DigiKey is CKN1143.

If you do not wish to lose the camber AND landing mode, and want to
have the motor on a spring-loaded switch, then you might want to take
a look at the modification that I did a bunch of years ago for the
8103 to add a launch preset for handlaunch. In this case, the switch
is replaced with a three-position switch with the function ON-OFF-MOM
(ON or OFF or MOMENTARY).

In the center or OFF position, you are in LANDING mode. In the ON
position, you are in variable camber mode. In the MOMENTARY position
you can activate a mixer for launch preset or in your case for motor
ON. There is a pretty detailed set of instructions either at:

http://www.hoopesdesigns.com/ and look under Other Goodies
OR
http://silentflyer.org/articles/8103-mod-1.pdf
The later option gives you what you want without having to sacrifice
landing and camber modes. BTW, you can also add elevator preset during
climb by using one additional mixer.

I hope this helps.

Re: [RCSE] Orbit Pro - Was Schulze chargers?

2005-03-26 Thread Dan Kitching
I have been using an Orbit Pro for a little over a year now and would
recommend it to anyone with diverse charging needs. Up to 32 cells Ni/xx
and 11S lipo, and I'm charging my automotive field battery with it right
now. It also format charges which is very handy with new packs.

I connect the charger to my PC every few dozen cycles on a given pack
and cycle it. I can compare the graph against that pack last time and
notice any deterioration of capacity and a given discharge or charge
rate. I also just built two 14xGP2200 packs for my Ariane. Once built I
connected the two packs in series and ran 3 format cycles on all 28
cells. Then I charged 'em all at 2.2A a couple of times.

I definitely like my Orbit Pro.

Hi Walter,
You're going to laugh, but do yourself a favour and try it before to dismiss
it.
Tungsten is a wierd alloy, it can be cut extremely easily by certain things,
like magazine cover paper.

You're laughing, I can hear you. Go try it and see. Use the paper the same
way you would if you were trying to give yourself a papercut (don't), only
use it to cut the tungsten. Make sure you use the back cover of a mag that's
going to the recycling anyway, no need to mar a magazine you care at all
for.

2005-03-12 Thread Dan Kitching
Hi Mike,
I was aware of your method, but have no need for a proportional throttle. At
14 cells and 120Amps, the plane is either climbing like heck or gliding, and
I only get a few seconds of run time per climb or the batteries and ESC are
gonna give me a bad day. As a result I'd prefer the throttle to be switched
for simplicity's sake.

I did just get a novel idea, however. I'm going to go back to my manual and
actually look at if for a few minutes. Heck I'm not a dumb guy (keep it down
Sheldon), I'll just have to work it out.

Yep :) But I found something that does it better and holds its breath
better too. New compressor pulls full vacuum (measured directly from hose)
and keeps it at least for two hours when disconnected. My quick-n-dirty
testbag had about -0.9bar (~26 Hg) (measured from the other end of the
bag) and the thinned mylar went around the curved wingtip very well. New
compressor is also very silent and does not get hot at all.

Re: [RCSE] Re: Copying Designs/Plans

2005-02-07 Thread Dan Kitching
I think the key here is personal gain. NO gain, no breaky the rules.
I have a question about that one
If I copy a popular plan for a 1/4 scale Minimoa, then haven't I have done
something that is for personal gain whether I sell it or give it away? The
person who receives the plan gains because he/she no longer needs to
purchase a set, and Chris Williams doesn't get his royalty to which he is
entitled.

Nobody ever sues for personal gains, they sue for damages.
Copying a set of plans that you purchased, then using the copy to do the
actual build seems to be acceptable practice though. I've seen many times
when the instructions recomend that we do this to save the original plan
from damage during the building process.

Ever notice that almost all sailplanes and commercial jets have T-tails.
I have. I think that they are the sweetest looking things ever put on
sailplane. (The pictures of the Diana just brought this to mind.)

 Pros:
 Look REALLY cool.
More Efficient (anyone have the numbers of how much efficiency gain
there is?)

 Cons:
Heavy - require more nose weight
Fragile - more moment to cause damage
 Other things I've been pondering:
Are they less affected by downwash changes with flaps or spoilers?
Any real slick ideas for making them really light to improve dork
tolerance and overall abuse resistance? Breakaway bolts?

Re: [RCSE] Li-Po battery question

2004-12-18 Thread Dan Kitching
Hi Rense,
Great Planes recommends a maximum discharge rate of 8C for that pack.
Whether or not that's the max continuous or max burst discharge is unclear,
so I'd take it as the burst rate. You continuous discharge rate would
probably be more in the range of 6C with some airflow.

If your Aveox power system is drawing 7.2A or less, then you're laughing. If
you're at 9.6A or under then you can still use the battery, but for no more
than 30 seconds at a time with a good length of recovery time with airflow
over the pack during the glide.

Remember that these are merely guidelines, check the temperature after a
good climb and never let the pack exceed recommended max or you may have a
new smoke system followed by fireworks!!

If you need more current, then look at the new Thunder Power Generation 2
packs, or Kokam's High Discharge packs, or Tanic's packs. You'll find what
you're looking for, just be wary of the treatment these batteries receive.

Hope this helps, just ask if you need more detail.

Re: [RCSE] F5B

2004-12-10 Thread Dan Kitching
Hi Mike,
You can research this some more in the high performance forum at
www.ezonemag.com, the choices are very, very large here.

For motors, Plettenberg are currently top of the heap, with Hacker following
up the rear. All of these motors are geared, and most competitors are using
RFM carbon fiber propellors.

For speed controllers, Schulze and Kontronik are the heavy duty
manufacturers. Hacker's controllers are being used more in F5D Pylon than in
F5B.

For models, well, here it gets broad. You can look up the individual
airframes, but the short list includes Avionik (from Russia, produced by
Sergey Sobakin, an engineer at Sukhoi), Surprise (I believe from Austria,
manufactured by Rudi Freudenthaler, same guy that makes the RFM props),
Ariane, Lea, Scorpio, Vanessa, Simba, Victor. the list goes on here. It
really depends on whether you're looking for 7 cell, 10 cell (F5F), or open
class aircraft.

You can check out nearly all of the motors, controllers, and Avionik planes
at www.icare-rc.com, and some of the motors, controllers, and many planes
like the Surprise series at www.shredair.com.

Hope this helps, just ask if you're looking for more specific info.

[RCSE] Falcon 550 E specs needed

2004-12-02 Thread DAN KITCHING
Hi all,

I've done a quick web search for this plane but haven't come up with any specs. I have a Falcon 550E fuselage, but don't know anything about the aircraft itself. I believe it was an Airtronics product.

If anyone has any info on the wing section, planform, span, area, horizontal stab profile, rudder size/shape, I would be much in debt.

Thanks

Re: [RCSE] Hobby People has Trition Charger for $109 until Tuesday, save $20

2004-11-28 Thread Dan Kitching
I own a Triton and it has been very reliable. It has no autosensing function
for Li-Po chemistry, this is as manual as the Kokam or Peak units. If it
charges a 2S pack with 3S voltage, it's because you told it to. I can
definitely recommend this charger for anyone looking to charge up to 3S
packs at up to 2 Amps. Any more than that and you'll have to look elsewhere.
It will, however, charge as many as 24 Ni-xx cells at up to 5 Amps. Pretty
excellent for only $109 !!

If you're looking for a serious charger for LiPo, Li-Ion, Ni-MH, Ni-CD, and
Lead Acid, I own and highly recommend the Orbit Microlader Pro. It's capable
of charging a 32Cell Ni-xx or 11S LiPo pack at 8Amps and has an optional PC
interface to plot your charges and discharges. I've owned mine for nearly a
year now and it is an awesome piece of hardware in design, software, and
manufacturing quality. Etienne Dorig carries them at www.icare-rc.com

When you connect a LiPo pack, you enter the charging current and connect the
battery. The charger looks at the pack and tells you how many cells it
thinks you have in series. It will not begin charging until you confirm the
number of series cells.

David, the triton is manual setup only. It does not auto detect the cell
count. The user must select the nominal pack voltage and charge rate.
They work fine for lipos IF you are careful to set it properly. Improper
settings can cause damage.

BUT...The Sirius chargers are what you need for real battery care.

I had a Triton. I used it once and destroyed a lithium pack I hadn't
even gotten a chance to use. It will read a charged 2cell pack as a
dead 3cell and charge away. POOF! Get a Peak or Kokam unit instead.
They set up manually, so YOU are in charge of the settings.

Re: [RCSE] Most fun plane

My most fun plane, you're going to gasp, was a Zagi 400X. Speed 400 powered
and unafraid of circuits with the wing tips less than a foot off the grass.
That stupid foam plane developed me as a pilot and prepared me for the pylon
racers that I have grown to love.

My favourite plane to date, however, was my Mini-Nyx E. I miss that plane
more than any other, and have resolved to get another one before spring.
Well, that or a fully flown F5F (10 cell F5B) ship. I killed my Mini-Nyx by
forgetting to charge the rx battery after a couple of 25min+ flights. It's a
terrible way to be reminded that not all of my electric powered planes are
BEC equipped!!!

I don't think I'll ever let go of my powered planes, but I can assure
everyone that my glow power days are far behind me. If I ever get IC again,
it'll be a gasoline burning Wilga, and that folks, is the soaring content
for this post :)

I admit my Boomerang was the plane I had most fun with. I can throw it

Sometimes I ballast it when the wind is really blowing. My Boomerang
lost its rigidity long time ago because it met earth, trees, etc. so

But it still flies fine.
I will rebuild it or build a new one for next summer. I cannot consider

In fact there are a bunch (out for quite awhile) right now. AVA and its clones use the Drela foils. These are molded planes, from the spar forward...'organic' construction (organic is theterm coined by Vladimir Models for sailplanes comprised of composites, wood and polycovering material). They work so well that you'd better get your order in for one now in order to get one before the coming season.

As you probably have found out, unless under the thumbs of someone who can find lift, work it, and come home to the spot, airfoils don't provide any value beyond conversation.

Dennis, your intended message is a good one, and we should all take heed.

Just to be fair here...

It's far more accurate to say that very, very, very few Muslims are
terrorists. The recent crop of terrorists aren't Muslims, they're Muslim
Extremists. There's a big difference between the two, and the latter do not
base their anger and aggression on the teachings of their religion. Nor do
they have the support of Muslim leaders. This is not to say that Americans
are popular with Muslims. Many aspects of the American way of life, love of
equality, love of political freedom, ability to love money, these things
are not kosher with their beliefs. They have Avery right to hate us, and
many of them do, but their leaders are not encouraging them to kill
Americans, that is purely the domain of extremists who make up a very, very
small percentage of the Muslim population.

Up until 9/11, the most deadly act of terrorism ever perpetrated on American
soil was by Timothy McVeigh. We all blamed foreign religious groups right
away, and I remember being shocked that an American had destroyed the Alfred
P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. I haven't forgotten that jolt,
and won't be so short sighted again.

But that's not what you were trying to say in your post. Please don't
misunderstand me, I'm not trying to berate you for anything. I just wanted
to bring attention to a tendency we (myself included at times) have of being
suspicious of anyone with a towel on their head. The media has not helped.

I am truly amazed how easily you boys are willing to surrender your
freedom
in the name of security. What possible security are we talking about.
Can
your toy do any damage to his plane? Can you even reach it? Are you in
his
flight path or even within miles of it? Can you carry anything as a
payload worth
the effort to be reasonably able to pose a threat? Is anything and every
thing some nitwit in Washington dreams up now a threat to real aircraft?
(I had a
conversation with a buffoon from the FAA who flew model planes as a child
and
understood just how dangerous they were. That was his rational for
closing a
field that had been used for years for model flying).

There comes a time when you have to pull your head out and just say
enough
is enough, this is just too stupid to put up with anymore. There are
millions
of Moslems out there that hate and detest infidels and nobody will ever
be
100% safe from them all. Yes, I know not all Moslems are terrorists but it
seems a pretty good bet that nearly all the latest crop of terrorists have
been
Moslems. It's a pretty sure bet that we can't stop them all and that they
have
also been here all along so isn't it time to just face reality and concede
a
little danger is inevitable? We have to be smarter than them not dumber.
Smart
precautions not stupid ones need to be implemented. We have to trust each
other
a little more and be willing to accept responsibility and not just dumbly
hand it over to unqualified people just because they are in positions of
 authority.

Now that the secret service has decided to ask nicely for you to stop
playing with your plastic toy plane instead of shooting you down it's all
OK is it?
For the record, there is no such thing as asking nicely! The implied
power
and oppression of the government is behind them. Refuse and they will
carry it
to whatever end they can justify. These tactics can be implemented only
when
out of the of public scrutiny. Most cannot stand the light of day.
Publicize
them and they melt away. Ridicule is a powerful tool when applied
selectively,
and I mean by name, down to the local level. Any reasonably intelligent
person
should be able to assess the threat level of a model plane as opposed to a
missile and take the appropriate action. Each time they get away with it
another
precedent is set and more freedom is eroded away.

On a certain level I could almost understand the hysteria when they closed
the 30 mile circle around Salt Lake City airport during the Olympics. It
being
right after 911 and so nearly everyone went along with it but it set the
precedent. Now, little by little, we are handing the security types our
freedom. Is
it because of some misguided sense of duty or is it just plan out and out
fear. I'm sorry, but I cannot sit quietly by and watch it go down the
toilet. I
did not spend 24 years of my life protecting this country to see it handed
away
by liberal yuppies so afraid to loose their little area of interest that
they
are willing to give up mine for what they perceive as security. You eat
the
elephant one little bite at a time and you surrender your freedoms the
same
way. It worked in Germany, Russia, China, Cuba, England

Re: [RCSE] What Can Brown Do For You?

2004-09-16 Thread Dan Kitching
John,

I don't know much about the American psyche, but it's pretty normal to want
the lowest price possible, we're the same way up here in Canada. We
shouldn't be expected to have to encase our planes in stainless steel boxes
to eliminate shipping damage. That's an obvious overstatement, but my point
is that there is no reason why it should be our responsibility to OVERPACK
an item to ensure it's safe delivery. The major carriers get away with this
abuse of their customers because 1, we have no other options, and 2, there
is no legislation to protect us.

I maintain that these guys ARE often purposely malicious with freight, and
it's not just me that's saying so. Bootprints and knuckle sandwich imprints
are not part of the sorting process, and I've seen these very things a few
times. My last one from UPS was a bootprint that broke a $700 pool cue in
half for me.

Well, as I said pack THEM PROPERLY, and you will minimize the chance of
damage, there is no luck involved with settling claims, it may help to
have an account with the shipper, but this is conjecture. Wrapping in
cardboard is not going to do it, if you want cheap freight rates, and
everyone does, you have to be pro active about packing. Bellyaching that
these guys are purposely malicious with freight is typical of the
American psyche, we demand the cheap low price, but bitch when the

Believe me, I tried and so did Adam Till who shipped it. FedEx says the

actually don't insure items. I filled out the claim for a model
 plane.

I hope Adam chimes in so you can get his take on it and what they told
 him.
 You've been lucky.

I don't know were you get this, I have a FED EX account and have never
heard of this, I ship almost exclusively Fed Ex for models 5 meter and
under and have only had damage once for which they paid the claim (A

And FedEx has a Non-Insurable category for scale models. They
 totally
trashed a Minimoa I had shipped from Canada and would not honor the
  claim,
even though they took the money for the insurance. They said if it
 was
  a
kit of lots of parts they would, but not if the parts are already
  assembled.
They honored a claim for a smashed stab they shipped, since it was not
 a
complete model. The big companies like Tower have an exemption.

[RCSE] Vacuum pump question, how to lube?

2004-03-26 Thread Dan Kitching
Hi all,

I have recently received a vacuum pump for bagging stuff to throw at the
skies, and it works quite well drawing 26 inches fairly quickly.

Before I use it though, I'd like to ask the knowledgeable folks how to
lubricate it. It has a bit of a squeal as it runs, and a plate on the back
says to lube it every 10 years or so at normal duty.

I have no idea how old it is, but the squeal concerns me and I'd like to
lube it as a precaution before I start running the poor thing for 12 hours
at a stretch.

I don't see any lubrication fittings.

Any help that could be offered would be very much appreciated,

Thanks
Dan

Re: [RCSE] Glitches

2003-10-22 Thread Dan Kitching
Hi Jerry,

Is it a consistent glitch whenever you drop flaps? Even on the ground? Do
you maybe have wipers on the flaps that would have carbon to carbon contact
anywhere with the wing.? That could be a source of noise.

If the glitch is on a flap channel, causing the flap to drop as a symptom,
then I don't envy you for the troubleshooting you're going to have to do.

Just a thought,
Dan

I have been flying an Eracer lateley that has the woven carbon-kelver fuse
and have been having glitching, droping a flap and was wondering if anyone
has had similar problems and found a cure. My antenna was inside fuse but
has been move to outside bottom. I'm using Hi Tech Super Slim and Stylus.

Re: [RCSE] Did anybody go flying today?

2003-10-19 Thread Dan Kitching
I finally got to maiden a new F5D machine called the Sunracer. Not on the
Aveox pylon power system until I have the radio setup worked out, but flew
very nicely indeed on 8xCP1700 and a Mega 16/15/3. Not quite as fast as my
Sokol on the same motor and 8xKAN950, but smoother, and visibility with the
bigger wing is excellent. I'm amazed that the little Mega can haul the
bigger airframe and heavier battery pack vertically, not quite unlimited,
but easily up to 400' from a 10' fly-by.

I know it's not a saiplane, but I'm very excited about it. The molding
quality is terrific, and it slows down to land better than any of my smaller
pylon racers.

Dan's a happy camper today !

Get it up,
 Dan

I'm about to make the jump into vacuum bagging wings
and such. I'm curious as to what other projects around the house
can be done with this equipment. Anyone using their bagging gear for
anything else?If you need to take towels in your suitcase, place them
in a plastic bag, draw a vacuum, seal the bagand watch them fit in the
smallest space you ever imagined - works when you don't have much shelf space
also! It's a trick I learned from Paul

Just last week on Monday, I was looking at going to Denver next week for
the F3J team selections and my F3J quiver was reduced to broken
parts. This is a terrible feeling, I had worked so hard to put some nice
models together and practice with for the team selects and they all had
been stuffed. I was involved in a launch accident in Dayton that piled in
my second ICON Lite in just 3 weeks.

But I am lucky man, I have true friends in our community.

Jim McCarthy fixed things that I didn't think could be fixed, two times
around. And built a new ICON in record time for me to use, never failing
to continually mention how slow I build. Robin Meek, Capn' Jack and Doug
Barry all offered me their ICON's to borrow, and I actually have Robin's
and Jack's here. And Don Peters at Maple Leaf Design got me the parts I
needed, his models are so modular that I was able to build, piece together
and setup these models exactly like my previous models.

These two pictures are very special to me, it's still a blur how I got to
having these three models ready to contest in less than a week, a lot of
things fell into place that only friends could make happen, but I am ready
for F3J in Denver, these models are all setup and ready to rock, here is
my
quiver (3 different blends of ICON).

Thanks to Jim McCarthy again, and Tom Kallevang and Capn' Jack and Robin
Meek and everyone that kept my head in the game over the last week. I
would have never made it alone.
