RE: [RCSE] Pumpkin Fly, what was the other event...
I had family in town from AZ, could not make the event... They dragged me to the boats in Indiana for gambling 'fix' - my question is what was the full size fly-in going on around Cinci? We were driving back on 275 around 2 on Sunday, and we saw a 3 plane formation where literally you could have jumped from one wingtip to the other, this was quickly followed by what I took as an AT-6. The first formation was so odd that I initially thought the middle plane was having problems, although I am not sure what I thought the other ships could do. The Texan looked too out of place not to be going to a show. Just curious, anyone?Brent
RE: [RCSE] stuck on mandrel
I had this happen once doing wing joiner tubes for the Allegro; I finally got the fiberglass tube off the mandrel by running it under an InSinkerator hot water dispenser here at work. I think you could do the same with either HOT tap water or water from a tea kettle. I don't know if it loosened up the epoxy, melted the wax, or both - it did save me from having to cut into the glass and mandrel to start over again. RE: [RCSE] De-electrifying Sailplanes
You mentioned the Graphite, but a Silent Dream 2.0 - 2.5 would be a good choice, also. The nice thing about the FVK stuff is you can get electric and sailplane components; it would not be a big trick to have one set of wings and 2 fuses, one electric and one not. If nothing else, you could always get the second fuse later and only have to set up the RX, battery, and tail servos. Makes for a compact, flexible pair of planes. Just a thought, it's a good flying ship either way. Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Woodys .....
Just wanted to put this out, in the spirit of encouraging those flyers out there that still like to build. Based on the interest we received for this idea last year, the DARTS are going to run a Woody event as part of our annual Nostalgia / RES weekend contests. The Woody event will be run in parallel with the NOS event, and we would encourage these same flyers to compete in our RES event the next day. We considered the ladder format, but in the end Man on Man won out for this year's event. The calendar is still in the works until we can coordinate with the parks department, but the event is on our books. Now, what to build. Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Woodys .....
Duly noted... We just started kicking this idea around, and the reason we chose (are leaning towards?) MOM is scheduling. We want to run NOS and Woody's on the same day, and we are concerned that we'd not get in as much flying if we didn't keep the groups running. If we could do both event and run the Woody's in a ladder format, that might be interesting. There is still a chance we will schedule another Woody only event - depends on interest from other clubs and our own flyers, but your comment is NOT falling on deaf ears. This event is an experiment for us, and we're sort of feeling our way. Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] combo meet: Electric/slope
That sounds interesting, especially as the thermal season winds (wound?) down around here. I mentioned this and the Lake Wilson caravan at the DARTS planning meeting last nite, and both at drewgot some interest. I think I could make one or two runs up to the lake to fly, especially if I take the Mrs to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while there. Keep me in the loop as you pick dates (or feel like the wind's right) to fly. Brent
RE: [RCSE] slope rules / pics
If you do have some events, even just fun slope flys, please let me know - same goes for anyone in the Ohio / IN / KY / MI area. Just not that many good slope sites and opportunities to fly, hard to pass up opportunities to get out and do it. Also, ifyou are interested in a one-design, I'd look into the specs that the Lake Wilson group floated a couple years back - remember it as asingle taper, SD606x wing, some other loose specs on fuse width, but it would be cool to have some time to whip up a couple ships. Good luck getting something going, Brent
RE: [RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #8443
I knew Mr. Voss had this answer! The Fun-1 was the ship I had in mind as the model for ODR, but I could not come up with Paul for the ODR specs - I think I'll be doing some searches tonite for those numbers, would be a fun off-season (thermal) project. Hope there are some others with the same idea, Brent
[RCSE] ... for woody contests ...
That reminds me, wanted to float this before our annual event planning meeting. Would a Woody event garner more interest than an (our) annual Nostalgia event? The NOS event has been a fixture, but it's not getting nearly the interest it used to - we are toying with going Woody this year, with a category to honor the best / top NOS ship(s). Does that sound like a more modern format that still encourages building flyers? Thanks, Brent DARTS RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Slopers. Always breaking things I have never broken so much radio equipment in my life until the Winter I learned that I loved sloping. Hell, I have broken those metal servo arms before, nylon and plastic I just expect to break now. RE: [RCSE] To Russ Young (obechi / foam)
Hi all, I did an obechi foam project this year, and it was not bad at all. I bought ultracoat (huge roll), it's got a good, low temp workability. You could do fiberglass and paint, but you'll kick yourself if you try ultracoat later. I just sanded it very clean, finishing up with a high grit foam block. Only trick I heard from John (Derstine) was to make sure your surface is clean before you start. I vacuumed mine and then cleaned it with a damp rag, until it stopped showing the sawdust. After that, I just covered as I would a foamie, a 200 foamie. Low heat, working right down the wing trying to smooth the covering down more than stretch it tight. I turned the heat up slightly at the LE / TE, especially when joining the top and bottom film. If you keep the iron moving and pretty low (like 20%, tops), you should be fine. Good luck! Brent [QUOTE=Russ Young] That being said, one of the remaining things I need to do is cover the wings. They are white foam with an obeche skin (about 1/16 thick). I would prefer one of the plastic coverings (Monocoat, etc.) but I'm afraid that I'll melt the foam with the iron or the heat gun. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] how high really
When I got my specs redone, I got into this discussion with my eye doc (that happened to be an ex-flight surgeon / perception researcher at Wright Patt) about flying RC sailplanes, and how I don't see that great at distance. He brought up an example about experiments with the red flag exercises in which fighter pilots did spot, identify, and shoot combat. In their experiments, the pilots were evenly matched, and the numbers suggested that the results should have been pretty even. They weren't. What they've added to the equation now is how well your eyes work together to spot and track a moving object. All these guys were great at identifying a static object at a distance, but when you put them in motion, some guys were much better than others. Just thought that was interesting, lift! B. RE: [RCSE] 2M Rambles
Be careful launching the Allegro - it has a weakness that I've seen and heard of from a couple flyers: it's not winchproof when faced with negative G's. Just wanted to put that out there before you end up like me (currently finishing up rebuilding my Allegro's center section). My (2nd) worst habit launching is dipping too deep in the bucket trying to get more of a zoom on launch; flying in a contest, I actually broke my wing DOWN. I flew it down, but my wing looked like a W after the break. Beautiful ship, just don't get sucked in by it's ability to take a hard (very) launch. RE: [RCSE] RE: 2M Rambles
I really wouldn't change much beyond my launch technique. If I do build another, I would be a little more careful with my spar wrapping and glueing of the center section, the centermost 6 inches in particular. I might consider adding a little more carbon in that same area if I had some thin prepreg available, inside of the bottom spar? It would just take a little sanding down of those shear webs a bit. Again, it's pretty darn tough, but avoiding a deep dip is probably a pretty good idea any way. Good luck! Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Nats and Other Thoughts
This is the first year I've been to the Nats for a small competition (eg, not Unlimited, etc), and maybe that made a difference, but the Nats Team really seemed to go out of their way to make the experience enjoyable. I can't count how many different people talked to me, took pictures my and my ship, encouraged me - it had the feeling of the world's best run club contest. I'm sure that didn't just happen, and I really want to put out a big thanks to all of you involved. I flew in one of Dennis Adamisin's events, and I just have to say that he in particular really made for an enjoyable weekend. RE: [RCSE] (Aussie 2M)...
I thought you might be surprised by its overall look, but I swear, half the reason it gets made fun of so much is because it just flies so well. It came on the scene and beat a lot of much more expensive, much prettier ships. A lot of people out there got beat by some ugly*, inexpensive planes. Most of the Mantises (Mantii?) had an MH32 airfoil (some 7037s), bagged foam with a carbon tube spar. 3 piece wing, held on with a single bolt, room in the wing mount for ballast. Phil Barnes put them out for a long time, not sure if he still does tho. There are still a lot out there, and except for the week before Nats, they're usually moderately easy to find. I flew against one of the 2 meter versions this weekend - it is strong and light, and it really handles (turns and lands) extremely well. Again, the biggest knock has always been how they look. Good luck, hope you find something good - Brent *I always mean the fuse pod / wing mount - the wings always looked like they longed to be on another ship. -Original Message- From: David Leigh [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2006 2:09 PM To: soaring@airage.com Cc: David Leigh Subject: RE: [RCSE] (Aussie 2M)... What are your thoughts on Ed Whyte's Cara? DJA's updated 2M Chrysalis? The 2M Bird? I throw the 'Bird in there after going to Muncie yesterday - that seemed to be the club ship. Downside to that is that I'd really rather build the 100 version, don't really want multiples. Any other choices? Are Ducks much out of that range? Plan B is bagging wings for an Allegro fuse, seems more like a longer term plan. Thanks, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Ace vario...
Hi all, I'm fishing for a vario, used/older but still functional... I've had one nibble, someone with an Ace. Any feedback on this? I couldn't find much thru an internet search. Also, if you've got something that you'd consider parting with, I'm in the market for something I could use 2 or 3 times a year (eg, I'm not quite ready to splurge on an EagleTree with GPS yet). [RCSE] Warmup HLG event
The DARTS club is having a mini hi-start (hlg) contest on May 13th. This is not on our normal events list, but we wanted to get a warmup in before our annual 2 day event. We'll robably start flying about 10am. There are no restrictions on what you can fly as long as a mini hi-start can launch it. Tasks will be set so it will not require you to be a marathon runner to compete. This is a good opportunity to blow the dust off your old hlg. Bring your dlg also, if numbers are sufficient we can also run some standard hlg rounds. Also, if you have anything you'd like to see at an event like this, let me know - this is meant to be a fun event, so we're pretty open. New fliers are encouraged to come out, might be a good opportunity to learn Thanks! Brent DARTS (www.daytonsoaring.org) RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Re: Initial CG on a scratch ship...
Thanks to all that gave me info on coming up with the CG last week - much appreciated. A couple overlapping techniques, a couple great links (now bookmarked), and a lot of experience brought to bear really helped. End result was a successful maiden and a still healthy ship. For those of you that threw out a number, 3 back from the LE seemed to be pretty darn close. That translated into a lead plug about the size of a small coffee cup (with a hole in it for the tow release). Again, the quick replies here were (are) much appreciated - shots of the maiden take off are at http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=453840page=2pp=15 DARTS aerotow shots to follow when I get to more friendly computer. [RCSE] Initial CG on a scratch ship...
Title: Initial CG on a scratch ship... Just trying to get a rough idea where to start here, what formula you might use to come up with a starting CG. Picture a 200 inch wing, root chord about 11 inches, tip about 5, straight leading edge, tapering TE. Modern airfoil, HQ 2.5, 12 - 10 percent thick. My thought was to go mid span, take some percentage of the chord there, then mark the root that far back - example: 30% of 8 becomes 2.4 inches - mark the root at 2.4 inches from the leading edge. 2 questions - how far off is that logic, how far off is 30%? I'm towing this ship for the first flight, so I'd like to be pretty close, erring to the nose heavy side. Thanks! Brent
[RCSE] DARTS Aerotow, Muncie, April 22-23
The DARTS are holding their annual Aerotow this weekend at AMA Headquarters in Muncie, Indiana. This is a two day sanctioned event, and it's always a great time. We usually have a couple large towplanes and skilled tug pilots, so bring out that scale project you've been working on and have a ball. The AMA field has a large runway, plenty of grass, and a world of sky to fly. Should be a good warmup for those of you that plan on flying the scale XC event at this year's Nats; if nothing else, there are always impressive ships to see. RE: [RCSE] Need help programming JR 770 rcvr
Hi Bernie, I would set those up as though you had flaps- I think that means use the Gear and AUX2 slots on your RX. I think that's right - my 2nd guess is Throttle and AUX2. You could then use the crow settings to control those from your throttle stick, mixing in elevator as you need. That should get you the butterfly mix you want, just don't mix in the ailerons (assuming you run the rudder off that channel and the right stick). I'm stuck at work, or I'd check my setup, but I think that's right - aileron and aux1, gear and aux2 for a 4 servo wing is what I picture on my ship. Much luck,Brent From: Bernie [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, April 14, 2006 9:15 AMTo: soaring@airage.comSubject: [RCSE] Need help programming JR 770 rcvr I need help. RE: [RCSE] JR RS6UL receiver full range?
I've used the 610s in several full range applications without any issues. Used one from time to time in my Paragon, flew that to the limits of my vision (which is fair, and that's a big ship). I also fly one in a 2-meter Allegro, and I've had no problems with that (using a handlaunch-type lacquered wire antenna) - again, I've had that out a long way. I have not used any of mine in an electric, so I can't say that wouldn't change the math - I doubt it would, especially if you have a decent speed controller. Unfortunately, no. I watched on RCGroups for any word, last I saw was his passport was used to leave the country (Puerto Rico?). RE: [RCSE] Covering Obeche over white foam
Hey Russ, I can't find the article, think it disappered when Mr. Derstine did, but the gist of it was to use Ultracote. I've used that directly over foam, will take a much lower temperature. I'm going from memory, but the main point was to get a good surface first. Fine sand the obechi (200 going towards 400 grit), vacuum the dust, and then use a cheese cloth (?) and wipe the wings to get down to clean wood. I'm doing the same thing in the next 2 weeks - 5M obechi wings, bought some Ultracote in bulk - should be fun. Good luck! Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Title: HLG Batteries I can't get to Yahoo Groups from work lately, and I wonder what you all are using for HLG batteries... Saw a 3-cell KAN setup, wondered if that was too exotic (also, did not get the MaH numbers, so I couldn't pursue that). Initially this would be for a poly, 2 servo ship, but I'd also like to know how much that changes for a 4 servo ship. I've just been out of HLG too long, any help would be great. Thanks, Brent

Thanks for the heads up (literally), Tom - we seem to be getting some travelers going thru Dayton today... [RCSE] redundancy for scale
Has anyone here ever set up a redundant battery and switch for a scale ship? Was it worth the trouble? I'm working out my servo / rx / battery tray, and I'm torn between duplicating everything or just using a Y on two batteries. The extreme would be having two RXs, splitting the plane, either left / right, maybe one for the wings the other for everything else. Without a split elevator, that's probably not worth pursuing (I probably couldn't land it if if I lost the elevator). In the end, I'm just looking for reliable power for a lot of servos. RE: Re: [RCSE] Gluing Servos v.s. Servo Frames
That's the 2nd time that what I would consider a top flyer or top designer has talked completely differently about weight in a ship depending on where it's placed. Hmmm. I built the Drela Allegro-Lite last Fall, and for a 2-Meter built up ship, it will take as much lead as you can put in the belly - granted, it's a small belly, but still close to a pound. That in mind, when building the tips and tail feathers, weight was kept to a bare minumum, success measured in fractions of grams. The math supports it, if you care enough to fight through it, minimum speeds, mass and moment arms, headaches and sore eyes. All I really needed to hear (and basically hear again today) is that it affects how well your ship turns, how small a thermal you can work, the big things. Things I am filing away in case my thumbs ever catch up with that kind of advice... B RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: Re: [RCSE] Gluing Servos v.s. Servo Frames
Thanks, Phil - That is what I was thinking of, the inertia is the killer in when you start adding weight at the end of an arm. I don't know which installed setup is the lightest; I just thought it was interesting that Daryl defended keeping weight down near the tips. I made some kevlar and fiberglass tubes for an Allegro light I did last Summer; the first runs would not come off the form either. I was about to cut them off and start over, when I heard Sal's voice in my ear: heat, use heat. I swear that is from directions to take a twist out of a fuselage. RE: [RCSE] long wings, flying in wind, finding that Xacto knife
Long wings? Has anyone seen Tony Elliott's 1/3 scale ETA? It's an amazing thing; if you haven't seen it, look for it in an older Silent Flight / SeModeler magazine. The full size is over 100 feet, a truly amazing ship in its own right. Tony helped me a lot over the last couple years, and he sent me the work in process shots of this thing - 4 piece wing, each section looks longer than my building room, the finished span (I had to pull up a picture in the background to convince myself of this) legitimately looks to be over 30 feet. I've seen pics of it in flight, but it'd be nice to see this at Muncie some time if only to see what those scale guys are capable of. Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Re: Wood Crafters / Builders etc.
I agree that ARFs have their place in our hobby, especially for those of us that have the 8 to 5 jobs. I have to admit that I do like the spirit of events like Woodcrafters, if only in that it keeps the building segment of our hobby invigorated. That being said, it would be nice to at least recognize the builders - maybe not seperate events or contests, but maybe a seperate award? Top Fly what you Built and a package of 30 minute epoxy as a prize? Sort of serious there. Still fly and compete with the rest, just an acknowledgment of the craftsmanship. I guess I'm really looking for a way to encourage fliers or guests that only see the expensive side of the hobby. It's much easier to sell soaring if you can point out a $100 ship as a way to try us out; most people I've talked to sort of zone out when you say a ship cost $1,000 bucks without servos. It's an especially hard sell if they're standing there with a 12 year-old son or daughter that's the one interested. Maybe that's part of why it's easier to get new slopers out? [RCSE] carbon boom interference, Ham guy inputs.
I made the mistake (teasing) of mentioning this to a Ham guy I work with. He looked at the picture of me, the radios, and the plane - immediately said you've got vertical and horizontal polarization. Then, yes, the carbon boom could be causing you issues in that orientation. A half hour and 2 chalkboards later... The best ideas he had was a triangle shape going out the wing, back the fuse, back via the other wing - optimally connecting to the ground of the battery. That blew my mind. Plan B is the antenna above or below the boom, trailing to a half wave - he guessed (not knowing all the details of RC radios) the antenna length to be 39 for a half wave. The other idea he had was 2 antennas, both 39 - one normal, run out one wing. The other antenna would be hooked to the battery ground, out the other wing. I suggested one down the wing, the other down the boom. He said that would probably be bad, too directional. The triangle approach sounds interesting, anyone else hear something similar? He thinks that if you do it right, you get the RX into a vertical polarization, more like the transmitter. Thanks to all who've given input on this! [RCSE] carbon boom interference, redux
I set up an Allegro, magnet wire antenna run external to the boom - loose wraps back to the rudder. I have since seen some erratic flying; hard down when it's headed directly at me (from a turn, not far out). I've not had the problems at distance, but more like a quarter mile out, under 500 feet. Saved it both times, maybe by turning the tranny to a 1o o'clock position. Looking thru the archives here (and the Allegro group), I've seen some discussion on this. Any thoughts? Could the boom still be casting a shadow here? I had assumed that getting outside of boom would help, and that going around it would expose the antenna from all directions - now I'm not so sure. I'm considering running directly back to the rudder, maybe just to isolate this. Thoughts? Thanks, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] night and day....
I have been messing around with making composite wings for a while now, but the foam cutting was always such a hassle... I can't count how many times I recut a section before I got it right, stuck on the beginning of the LE, didn't drop into the lower surface correctly, etc. I finally decided to make a suspension setup for my feather cut, and I am kicking myself for not doing this sooner. Suspended a 4 foot section of 3/4 dowel above the cutting board, perpendicular to the wire, and I hung the bow from a loop that slides over the dowel. It is just so much more reliable, if only because the bow doesn't want to hang up on the template and the wheel doesn't take the bow off diagonally on a tapered cut. Just passing that on, in case you have not tried this - took me about 10 minutes to set up, would have been worth it if it took a day. [RCSE] Hawk VS HalfPipe
If you're in the Midwest and can get out and slope today, get out. I got about 20 minutes in over lunch, flying in winds 20+mph out of the S/SW, sloping over the river. I've been flying this location with a HLG the last couple weeks, but it's strong enough out today that the foam seemed to be a better choice. No way to go to the backside where I fly, but the front is a long, subtle bowl, with a lot of nothing out front. Anyway, trying to get my touch back after flying slow all Summer, and I see what I thought was a seagull come in from over my shoulder. Don't see him again for another few minutes, but it turns out he had moved back and above me (not my ship). As I did a pass back down the face of the bowl, he moved in. It was very impressive; he never flapped, didn't seem to be trying to hard, but he moved directly into my 'six'. I was concerned about flying into him, so I dropped and moved out over the water. He never got more than about 3 feet from me, following me thru the whole maneuver. I did one more run back at myself and around the circuit, he tucked in on me once, then decided I didn't know what the hell I was doing and moved out. Only saw him one more time; as I was putting my stuff back into the car. He dropped in above my car, did a little half roll to get a better look, then went back to cruising the shore line. I assume he was curious as to what I was putting in the car, or maybe he was telling me to practice more and come look him back up when I was a lot better. RE: [RCSE] Long music wire????
I tried a music store, and they seemed willing to help - it was very busy, and I had to leave, but they acted as thought they had spools of wire for the pianos Maybe?Good luck, Brent
RE: [RCSE] Soaring in the Bluegrass/OVSS #6
Hi Chip, Hope it helps, would like to see you back at the DARTS field some time - you always had some nice toys to fly, and I remember you making some pretty interesting saves over the cornfield. Much luck with the recovery. Brent webmaster www.daytonsoaring.org RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Teaching a kid
What about moving him to a 'cooler' RES ship, like a Resolution or a Victory? Something that looks more like the open class ships, but maybe is a little more poly-like? I know I moved to my Open ship about a year early, and I think it cost me over the long run. I'd have been better served to hang back a year, learn to read the air instead of working the new ship. Plan B might be to get him an Agea or similar 3 piece with with a good angle on the tip sections Lucky kid ; ) Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Teaching a kid
Hi Jeff, I think Sal at Northeast Sailplanes still sells the Victory at www.nesail.com, check out www.hilaunch.com for info on the RESolution (if it's not on Nesail, too). I've seen both at quite a few contests, and they can be pretty competitive - certainly a big step up from a Spirt. Good luck, Brent *I'm guessing a bit, those sites are all blocked here. [RCSE] DARTS LMR Contest Sunday Aug 21, 10am
The DARTS are holding the 4th annual LMR contest next Sunday, pilots' meeting 10:00am. We have been run 2 classes, Speed 400 Open and unlimited, 7 cell Nicad / Nimh. Run times will be generous, soaring task will depend on the weather, but typically runs between 8 and 10 minutes after shut off. We'll fly at least 3 rounds, rest depends on fliers' consensus. The Speed 400 class is just that - any plane you want, as long as it's powered by a can, brushed Speed 400. Gearboxes are fine. Graupner, Rocket, etc - cobalts will probably fall into unlimited. The Unlimited category is just limited by the battery - whatever you can get in the air. I would consider an 8 cell plane if that's what you have. If you can get 2 packs ready to go, that would help keep things moving. This is just short of a fun fly, bring whatever you have and enjoy. Landing fee is $1 to subsidize the parks department. RE: [RCSE] dayton flying sites
Hi Bill, There are at least 2 - the DARTS (www.daytonsoaring.org) and the Wingmasters (www.wingmasters.org). If you're military or ex, you can also fly at WPAFB, but they have a pretty low ceiling. Go figure. The Darts field is better for sailplanes, very wide open, no gas planes to compete with. We're located between Wright Patt and Yellow Springs (map on the website), a horse and soccer park with miles of farm field around it. Darts have 2 contests this weekend and an electric (F5J) next week, contact me if you're just looking to get out (and I'll ping the group). The wingmasters field sits is a gas and electric field, but they do fly sailplanes, especially in the early part of the day. A pretty good group of guys will typically be out there late morning, early afternoon thru the week. I assume that's a perk of being retired ; ) . Lots of turbulence around the edges of the field, just a heads up. It's located off of Needmore, north of downtown, between Main and Dixie (Wegerzyn Gardens). The best hobby shops aroundare RCHobby- up Harshman from the AF Museum, Radical RC (off Springfield, across from the museum), and another store by the Dayton Mall (741 / 725 intersection). Visit the museum if you can, they've really got some interesting planes. Welcome to the area, Brent webmaster, DARTS
[RCSE] bad chatter problem
Ok, I'm trying to help a friend diagnose and hopefully resolve a chatter problem... It's a standard GL, and it gets big chatter, full throw up and down, in different orientations. Only suspicious thing is that he used metal pushrods instead of the 1/4 inch balsa setup standard to the GL. We moved the antenna outside the fuse, on the leading edge of the wing. No joy. Changed to a different transmitter, no joy. He's looking to replace the receiver, but he made the comment that he was using a 5 cell battery pack. Is there any way that 6V driving a 555 and a pair of micro (HS81) servos could be a problem? I'm thinking it's probably a bad board / crystal or a loose solder joint, but that battery pack is a wildcard to me - anyone? Thanks, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Nats HLG Rules Update
When you put it like that, it makes a lot of sense. I am curious about the 2nd point that Chris brought up, tho - what happens if you get hit by another contestant? I can't imagine that any sane person would try and hit someone (as was suggested, I hope to make a point), but say you do get hit, hard enough to cause some flying issues? Is there any relief, something that a CD could or should do? I assume you can't just relight a group like you might in TD, but what options would there be to make a reasonable attempt to work it out with that pilot? Just curious - more curious since I've been drifing back into HL, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] best bagging site
Just looking for a good site for wing bagging info; I'm wanting to do a set of HLG wings, and I've had mized success to this point. I signed up for the Side Arm Launch group, anything better? Would also be open to the link to Phil's bagging DVD. Thanks, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] 2 meter r hurts.Dayton! - The winners?
The winner was a Columbus native, a double LSF-V - Don Harris. I think he said he's won more 2-meter contests than any other kind, a testament to his air reading. Planes were all over the place - a pair of Manti, a Super V, 2 Organics, a Seeker (in the top 3 , Bruce Herider's been en fuego lately). Fairly sure a Gnome took wood (Ken Davidson). 2 Ducks did well, and Barry Anderson's Monarch still flew well. I backed my car over a Spirit Elite, repeatedly. Anyone know what Don's plane is called? I think it's a hybrid, for lack of a nicer word. PS - first Gordy exposure, he gave me some pretty good pointers on Saturday, probably earned me an extra 500 points. Something tells me he's a salesman. Thanks to all who came and flew, was a great 2 days. Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] What about South Carolina, Charleston area?
We're going to Folly Island in a couple weeks, any sloping sites nearby - general Charleston area? Last trip to Outer Banks let me slope off the dunes facing the ocean each evening, but it was fairly tame. Anything better in this area? Thanks! [RCSE] DARTS Sanctioned Contests - Unlimited 7/9 and 2-Meter (Ohio's Cup) 7/10
The DARTS are holding a pair of one day contests this weekend, Unlimited on Saturday and 2-Meter on Sunday. The 2 Meter contest is part of the annual Ohio's Cup scoring, and it's a great tune up for Nats. $15 a contest, $25 for both days, trophies for Top 3 finishers each day. The DARTS use real balls, and we fly seeded man on man solely. Pilots' meeting 930am each morning. Hope to see you there, Brent Webmaster, www.daytonsoaring.org RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] DARTS Sanctioned Nostalgia and RES contests this weekend (June 18th-19th)
This weekend the DARTS will be hosting their annual Nostalgia and RES contests. These are seperate, one day contests with Nostalgia on Saturday and RES on Sunday. Entry fees are 15 per contest or 25 for the weekend. Trophies for top 3 places (at least). Both contests will be flown seeded man on man, and there will be a generous spacing on launches for the Nostalgia contest (to avoid any problems with launching the woodies). Pilots meeting will be at 930, with flying to start immediately after. Map to the field on our home page, www.daytonsoaring.org. Weather looks to be great in Dayton this weekend, hope to see you there.
[RCSE] rapid charge l-ion?
One of my techie co-workers emailed this to me... Toshiba's coming out with rapid charge Lithium Ion cells, 80% charge in less than a minute. Can maintain this for 1,000 charges, if you believe the literature. Anyone see this yet? www.techjapan.com/Article949.html RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] kevlar tow - spar wrapping
For anyone that's done a Bubble Dancer or Allegro, or anyone that's used a kevlar wrap on a composite spar - what kind of tow did you use? I checked ACP and CST, found thread, .025, and .038 braided - I am leaning towards the thread based on thickness alone. I'm open to suggestions from someone that's been down this road already. Plan B was dental floss, but I'd rather do this project to spec. Thanks, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
